Sarasvati Chennakesavan with a Foreword By N.A. Nikam A Critical Study of Hinduism New Delhi, India; Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; 1998; 81-215-0821-5 / 9788121508216; Third Revised and Enlarged Edition; Hardbound; New, New 14 Cms x 22 Cms Hinduism is not a revealed religion like Christianity or Islam. There was no First Prophet. It is a loosely knit pattern of ideological faith having its roots in dharma and satya. It is a sociological and ethical pattern of life that goes by the name of Hinduism. Through centuries, it has undergone a variety of changes. In ancient India, fundamental truths were taught with the help of myths and fables. As time passed, the truths were forgotten, myths and fables remained. Many a reformer has tried to restore Hinduism to its pristine glory, but the outcome, for all practical purposes, has been very short-lived. It has not reached the common masses and, therefore, has not left any imprint on their faith. The ingrained habit of the philosopher in India to consider and identify his philosophic goals with those of the religious ideals has led the common man to shun any religious thinking on the ground that it is beyond his reach. The common man has so far found satisfaction in confronting to the externalities of the religion. In A Critical Study of Hinduism, the author has made a critical study of the externalities of the religion as they exist today. It is a kind of development study of what is euphemistically known as Hindu religion, from its beginnings to its modern state. In this book, a viable definition of Hinduism is sought, and allied matters are dealt with in a general manner. In that context, the author discusses the natural religion of the Vedic people and the sophisticated Upanisadic ideas of the later days. This is followed by a systematic exposition of the theistic trends during the past centuries. She has also analysed the extent of the influence of the epics on the theistic strains in the early Indian thought. While evolving an ideal pattern of ethical tenets in the contemporary situation, she has evaluated the contribution of some important reformers and made a lucid study of the significance of their lives and works in the twentieth century. That a change in outlook is essential, the author concludes, cannot be denied. Till such time as when we can reform our own people and draw them to appreciate the truths and ideals of our religion, the author feels, we have no right to think of changing the people of other countries and of other religions. Margaret and James Stutley A Dictionary of Hinduism. Its Mythology, Folklore and Development 1500 BC-AD 1500 New Delhi, India; Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; 2003; 81-215-1074-0 / 9788121510745; First Indian Edition; Hard Cover; New, New 19 Cms x 25 Cms This encyclopaedic dictionary has proved indispensable for all those interested in Hinduism, whether specialist, student or general reader. The dictionary comprises about 2,500 romanised Sanskrit subject-headings with their English equivalents, explanations and etymology. An index of English subjects with Sanskrit equivalents, and an extensive bibliography are appended. The dictionary indexes and describes the mythology, folklore, religion, philosophy, literature and history of Hinduism over a period of more than two and a half millennia, thus dispelling many commonly held misguided beliefs. It reveals much of the real significance of Hinduism, which many would say shows an unsurpassed continuity and genius for analysis and synthesis. Initially an attempt to come to terms with man’s physical environment and subsequently the mysterious world beyond it, Hinduism recognised energy to be the ultimate source of manifestation, as its horizon expanded. This comprehensive work provides an invaluable survey of the long vista of Hinduism. Printed Pages: 392. Price:

Sushama Londhe; Forewords By Dr Subhash Kak and Ed Viswanathan A Tribute to Hinduism: Thoughts and Wisdom Spanning Continents and Time About India and Her Culture New Delhi, India; Pragun Publications; 2008; 8189920669 / 9788189920661; First Edition; Hardcover; New, New 15 x 23 Cm Since time immemorial, India has been synonymous with spiritual knowledge and people have been drawn to her sacred land. Some were philosophers, poets, writers, historians, scientists, and travelers. Some came to India others read translations about her rich and imaginative literature and felt genuine enthusiasm for her. The fourth Caliph in the 7th century is reported to have said, “the land where books were first written and from where wisdom and knowledge sprang is India.” Despite the wars and imperialism, ancient India’s spiritual influence and wisdom has had considerable impact on the West, especially on its imagination, science, and literature: English Romantic poetry in particular. Scientist, scholars, poets, writers, and philosophers all have paid the highest compliment to India’s wonderful metaphysical, religious, artistic, linguistic, and cultural genius by imitating and incorporating some of these ideas and theories into their own work. Hinduism has been like the rainforest of the spirit, always rejuvenating, evolving, and transforming over the millennia. Like an elegance of an exquisite seamless sari, which unfolds with supreme grace to showcase its intricate pattern, so does A Tribute to Hinduism. This book is a collection of positive and inspired gems of thoughts and wisdom from the writings of eminent philosophers, scientists, thinkers, historians, and authors from the West and the East on Hinduism and India. It catalogs their thoughts and the inspiration that they have drawn from Hinduism’s rich philosophy. Printed Pages: 550 with 32 colour illustrations. Price:

Raymond Brady Williams An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hinduism Cambridge, UK; Cambridge University Press; 2001; 0521652790 / 9780521652797; First Edition; Cloth; New, New 14 Cms x 22 Cms An Introduction to Swaminarayan Hinduism is a comprehensive study of a modern form of Hinduism that is growing in the place of its birth in the Indian state of Gujarat and among Indian immigrants in east Africa, Great Britain, and the United States. It is the most prominent form of transnational Hinduism because it creates networks that define and preserve ethnic and religious identity in the modern context of rapid mobility and communication. Founded by Sahajanand Swami or Swaminarayan (1781–1830), a religious reformer in a time of great social and political change in Gujarat, Swaminarayan Hinduism expounds a path of devotion to Swaminarayan as the final, perfect manifestation of God. Raymond Brady Williams provides a detailed introduction to the history, theology, discipline, and ritual of this important form of Hinduism. Based on and extending, with considerable updating and revision, his A New Face of Hinduism: The Swaminarayan Religion (Cambridge, 1984), the book places Swaminarayan in the context of transnational Hinduism and analyses its current status in India and abroad. Reviews ‘A much-needed descriptive account.’ Times Literary Supplement ‘This work is most valuable as a reference source on the Swaminarayan movement.’ The Journal of Asian Studies ‘A book every Hindu would do well to read.’ East and West Series Printed Pages: 266 pages with 18 half-tones, 6 tables and 3 figures.
