A Poet's Mind, is a selection of quotations from the vast range of literary works of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore — poet, Song writer, novelist, educationist, philosopher among others. 9 Rabindranath Tagore
Farewell My Friend
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184951647 / 9788184951646; Softcover; New;
The original Bengali novel Shesher Kavita (lit. Last Poem) was published in 1929. The author draws an amusing picture of an ultra-modern Bengali intellectual whose Oxford education, while giving him a superiority complex, has induced in him a craze for conscious originality which results in a deliberate and frivolous contrariness to all accepted opinion and convention. His aggressive self-complacence, however, receives a shock when as the result of an accidental meeting he falls in love with, and wins in return the heart of, a quite different product of modern culture a highly educated girl of fine sensibility and deep feelings. This love being more or less genuine and different from his previous experience of coquetry, releases his own submerged depth of sincerity, which he finds hard to adjust to the habits of sophistry and pose, practised so long.In the process he manages to strike a new romantic attitude. The struggle makes of him a curiously pathetic figure one who is being worked against his grain. The tragedy is understood by the girl, who releases him from his troth and disappears from his life. The last poem which she addresses to her lover gives evidence of the depth of feeling of which she was capable.Printed Pages: 188. 105486

Fireflies
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523162; Softcover; New;
Fireflies consists of 256 epigrams and short verses and shares structural similarity with Tagore’s other notable epigrammatic collection of poems, Stray Birds. These poems resemble the sayings of a wise man rather than poetry. The brevity and crispness of these verses combined with the wit & wisdom contained in them make these poems extremely delightful and reader friendly.Printed Pages: 68. 106591

Fruit gathering is a collection of poems that present Tagore ‘s love for nature, he interposes and mixes his own feelings with vivid descriptions of serene, vibrant beautiful landscapes, creating delightful juxtaposes. Gitanjali or the 'Song Offerings' translated to English by the 'great sentinel' himself, is a collection of his favourite poems. The poems mirror the poet's intimate response to the splendour of nature—the parched summer earth, the flowers, the rivers and the first monsoon shower — the images which touch a transcendental depth in these poems.Printed Pages: 68. 106823

Gitanjali
Full Circle; New Delhi, India; 8176211125 / 9788176211123; Softcover; New;
Gitanjali is a collection of over one hundred inspirational poems.In 1913 Tagore was the first Indian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature for Gitanjali, comprising of poems which are an invocation to God. Devoid of aggression and angst, they are like a breath of fresh air, which enlightens the soul. Gitanjali’s canvas encompasses life’s experiences with an innocence and simplicity that one does not find elsewhere in literature.The great Irish poet, W.B. Yeats, was inspired to write an introduction to Gitanjali when he heard and saw women in the tea fields of rural Bengal singing Tagore’s songs and poems with great fervour.Tagore (1861-1941), achieved fame as a novelist, playwright, poet, painter, lecturer, politician and composer. His tours of friendship and amity across continents gave him the privilege of being the voice of India’s spiritual heritage. 109969

Gitanjali: Song Offerings
UBSPD; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8174764275 / 9788174764270; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
Even though the English translation of Gitanjali bears the same name as the original Bengali edition, the poems featured in the two editions are neither identical nor the same in number. The original Bengali edition had 157 poems as against the 103 prose pieces in the English edition. These 103 ‘verses’ are again translations of 104 poems in Bengali. This is because one English verse (verse 103) is a combined translation of two Bengali poems. On the left hand pages are featured the manuscripts of the original Bengali poems. The English translations done by the poet himself appear on the right hand pages. Wherever the original Bengali manuscript is not available the Bengali version of the poem has been reproduced. This edition features Introduction to Gitanjali by W.B. Yeats. The English translation of the introduction to the French edition of Gitanjali by Andre Gide. Photographs of the medal and citation of the Nobel Prize awarded to Rabindranath Tagore. A selection of newspaper clippings reporting the award of the Nobel Prize for literature to Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Excerpts from introductions to Gitanjali translated in several languages will give readers a taste of the impact of the work across the world. The English translations have been set against a backdrop of photographs that will bring readers closer to the ambience of the place that was the cradle to this creative mind. In this classic play Tagore dramatized the concept that the religion of man is much higher than the religion of rituals and scriptures. The conflict here is not only between obedience to ‘moth-eaten scriptures’ and religion of one’s choice but between the poetry of pity and the prose of social necessity.Printed Pages: 44. 106588

Rabindranath Tagore: Words of the Master (Set of 12 Books)
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523094; Softcover; New;
This is a set of twelve books by Rabindranath Tagore, translated by the master himself and originally published by MacMillan, New York during the first and third decades of the twentieth century. That was the time when Europe and America were devouring everything written by Tagore and were agog with the excitement of discovering an Eastern genius. With the degradation of moral values in the Western civilization and the spectre of another world war looming large before them, they looked up at Tagore as a possible saviour and felt moved by his vision of a unified universe. Despite this topical allusion, greatness of these books remain unchanged even after the lapse of a century and their appeal remains as strong as ever. The set contains four plays, five poetry collections and two books of essays. We hope these slim volumes will mitigate the frequently heard complaint that the big rachanavalis are not portable and often even beyond the reach of the average readers. 106527

Tagore is an artist of rare lyrical powers, who understands the human soul. Tagore’s poems and stories are devotions, mystical, sublimated ecstasy. They are the thoughts of a seer, the perfect union of beauty and truth.‘…My song will be like a pair of wings to your dreams, it will transport your heart to the verge of the unknown. It will be like the faithful star overhead when dark night is over your road.’ A poetry collection that is part of a set of twelve books that have been translated by Tagore.Printed Pages: 56. 106590
