The Cambridge Introduction to the Short Story in English
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2008; 052173441X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
The short story has become an increasingly important genre since the mid-nineteenth century. Complementing The Cambridge Introduction to the American Short Story, this book examines the development of the short story in Britain and other English-language literatures. It considers issues of form and style alongside - and often as part of - a broader discussion of publishing history and the cultural contexts in which the short story has flourished and continues to flourish. In its structure the book provides a chronological survey of the form, usefully grouping writers to show the development of the genre over time. Starting with Dickens and Kipling, the chapters cover key authors from the past two centuries and up to the present day. The focus on form, literary history, and cultural context, together with the highlighting of the greatest short stories and their authors, make this a stimulating and informative overview for all students of English literature. Contents Introduction Part I. The Nineteenth Century: Introduction: Publishers, plots and prestige 1. Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy 2. Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad 3. The Yellow Book circle and the 1890s avant-garde Part II. The Modernist Short Story: Introduction: 'Complete with missing parts' 4. James Joyce 5. Virginia Woolf 6. Katherine Mansfield 7. Beating Low Cost Competition: How Premium Brands Can Respond To Cut-Price Rivals
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8126525045; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Seating Low Cost Competition is U practical guide that will help executives in traditional companies develop winning strategies to meet the growing challenge from low cost competitors. Many companies are being severely challenged by low cost competitors - competitors that offer "good enough" products and services at very attractive prices. In many industries the low cost threat is coming from companies based in developing countries, particularly in Asia. Some of these companies have huge, rapidly growing, highly competitive domestic markets, which help to create low cost competitors that can rapidly become formidable challengers to established Western and other (level open-market players. In other industries it is home-grown companies, such as Ryanair, Aldi, and ING DIRECT that are the challengers.Printed Pages: 272. 104548

Almost Single
HarperCollins Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8172236557; First Edition; Paperback; New; 198 x 129 Mm
'My name is Aisha Bhatia, I am twenty-nine years old and single. I work as a Guest Relations Manager at the Grand Orchid Hotel. I dine at luxury hotels and stay in five-stars during my travels; I can name old and new world wines with great élan, and can tell my cheeses apart. I tolerate my job, hate my boss, and bond big-time with my friends, while routinely suffering from umbilical cord whiplash. I don't really care for my vital stats at the moment, and I don't have a cute/funny nickname either. Hence this introduction: it stinks, but it sticks. In fact, sometimes I think there should be support groups like the AA out there for people like me…' Wickedly irreverent and laugh-aloud funny, Almost Single is a delightful romp through the five-star world of champagne brunches, gay soirées, and the dilemmas of hip, young girls on the lookout for love and matrimony. Introduction to Bharata's Natyasastra
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8121508290; Reprint; Hardcover; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Bharata's Natyasastra, the earliest treatise on dramatics, is, even today, the origin of our dramatic tradition. Besides being the most important study of dramatics, it is also the most comprehensive. The all-inclusive quality, however, creates problems for the reader who has to go through a great deal of unnecessary information. In his Introduction to Bharata's Natyasastra, the author has culled all information essential and relevant to drama, eliminating the superfluous. Eschewing attempt to provide any kind of a scholarly or original interpretation of Bharata's views, the author has focused on giving the reader a connected account of the study of dramatics using modern terminology. The purpose is to introduce those interested in drama to Bharata's wisdom and to throw light on the state of dramatics in ancient India. Written in a simple and lucid style, the author takes the reader through topics like theatre houses, the stage and stage-craft, play-construction and the rasa theory. All lovers of drama are sure to find this book both useful and absorbing. Printed Pages: 94. 015046

The Natyasastra: English translation with critical Notes
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121506808; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Natyasastra is probably one of the earliest and certainly one of the best treatises on Indian Dramaturgy. At the same time, the book available now is not an early one but may be as late as the seventh or eighth century AD. The authorship is traditionally ascribed to Bharata, the Sage. The eminence of Natyasastra is not that it was the first book on the subject but that it was the first comprehensive treatise on Dance, Drama and Music. Like the Mahabharata, Natyasastra too boasts that "What is found here may be found elsewhere. But what is not here cannot be found anywhere". To confer upon it prestige as the sole authority, it was described as the fifth Veda-a Veda accessible to all the castes of society. The essential elements of stage-craft have been described by the Natyasastra thousands of years ago. The question arises, naturally, whether such a treatise can serve any purpose of our time. This was the very question which the author set about to explore in the present translation and his notes on each chapter amply demonstrate how latest problems of actors and directors have been anticipated and resolved in it. 916 Adya Rangacharya; Translated with an Afterword By Shashi Deshpande
Opening Scene: Early Memoris of a Dramatist and a Play
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 19 Cms
Yesteryear's giant of Kannada literature, Adya Rangacharya—or Shriranga, as he came to be known—had many such epiphanic moments. That was how the child of an orthodox Brahmin jagirdar family went from watching, at first wide-eyed, village aatas put up by farm labourers to critically observing full-fledged natakas in the cities, taking in the theatre scene in London to finally writing—and often performing in—more than a hundred skilfully developed plays. There was no genre of writing that Shriranga did not touch. Creative writer and critic, he also penned a vast body of scholarly treatises on subjects that ranged from drama to philosophy and philology. His English translation of the Natyashashtra remains the definitive source of reference for most students of theatre. But as his memoirs reveal, his first and most abiding love was drama. His fifty years of association with the theatre were full of achievements, one of which was to bring women on to the amateur stage. Generations of actors have Shriranga to thank for investing their profession with a dignity it had lacked. But Shriranga's memoirs rarely touch upon such achievements. They record, without pomp or sentiment, the genesis and development of a brilliant Kannada dramatist. His daughter Shashi Deshpande's translation and her introduction to her father's life in theatre will bring him under the spotlight for a whole new audience. Printed Pages: 200. 023046

The Tao of Confidence
Unicorn Books; New Delhi, India; 817806183X; Softcover; New;
The most comprehensive and powerful manual ever written on the subject of self-confidence. Self-confidence is not an inborn trait or a quality but a practical set of thoughts, beliefs, habits and behaviours which can be learned, in an organised step-by-step format by anyone desiring to create the life of one's deepest dreams.“The practice of Tao builds daily simplification. Less striving occurs, until there is no striving. When effort is uncontrived, nothing is left undone. One who wins the world does so by not meddling with it. One who meddles with the world loses it.” Printed Pages: 173. 108217

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8121501822; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This book is the closest to a modern, critical, interdisciplinary answer to the oft-asked question "What is Hinduism?" The author does not claim to answer this question which he does not think can be answered unequivocally. Yet in this terse, succinct presentation something close to such answer has been attempted. The author analyzes both Hindu thought and Hindu behaviour as he approaches Hinduism both textually and contextually, as an indologist and a cultural anthropologist. He presents the average rural and urban Hindu views of the tradition rather than that of an intellectual or sacerdotal elite, and he introduces work-a-day people's way of acting as Hindus rather than the rituals or the meditations of highly tutored specialists, of the woman and the man in the field or in the office rather than of the purohita or shastri in the Vishvanath or Meenakshi temples. Bharati also clarifies a number of confusions which have become part of modernized Hindus' notions about ritual, caste, 'superstition' and other themes which the Hindu Renaissance of the last ten decades has generated. In order to illuminate the links between popular and learned Hinduism which includes a powerful esoteric segment, the author explains the perennially mystifying problem of bhakti vs. jnana, pivotally exemplified by Adisamkaracarya to whose order the author also belongs. When the late Pt. Nehru insisted that India's was a composite rather than a Hindu culture, he put his finger on an important fact: that one cannot sensible and sensitively talk about Hindu action without heeding the interface between Hinduism and Islam which has indeed become part of modern Hinduism, as it is indeed for South Asian Islam. The Great Road: the Life and Times of Chu Teh (Zhu De)
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 9789350024249; Softcover; New;
Chu Teh, one of the legendary figures of the Chinese Revolution, was born in 1886. He was commander in cheif of the People`s Revolutionary Army, and this is the story fo the first sixty years of his life. As a supreme commanding general, he was probably unique; surely there has never been another commander in chief who, during his years of service, spun, wove, set type, grew and cooked his own food, wrote poetry and lectured not only to his troops on military strategy and tactice but to women`s classes on how to preserve vegetables. Evans Carlson wrote that "Chu Teh has the kindness of a Robert E. Lee, the tenacity fo a Grant, and the humanity of a Lincoln." Chu Teh died in 1976. More than a biography, this work by a great American woman journalist, who took the account from Chu Teh himself, is a social and historical document of the highest value. In tracing her subject`s life from his early peasant days, Agnes Smedley provides both a sociological classic on rural China and a narrative of the Revolution, with few gaps from start to finish, as it appeared to its leading military figure. My Days in the Underworld: Rise of the Bangalore Mafia
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789383260348; Softcover; New;
Agni Sreedhar is an underworld don turned writer turned journalist turned filmmaker. He studied law in Bangalore and was intent on entering the Indian Civil Service when circumstances forced him to turn to crime. Starting from the early 1980s, Sreedhar found himself entrenched in the bitter gang wars that shaped the contours of modern Bangalore. This book is an intimate, first person account of the two decades he spent in the world of crime. But My Days in the Underworld isn’t just a tale of murder and blood. It is a study of a system that runs parallel to the world ordinary people inhabit, a lateral universe, one with its own police force and laws, one where the criminal justice system has all but failed. This is a story of a city as seen through the personal histories of politicians who ruled Karnataka, men like Gundu Rao, Ramakrishna Hegde, Bangarappa and Deve Gowda, as well as those who were responsible for shaping Bangalores underworld – Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, Sharad Shetty, Kotwal Ramchandra, Jayaraj and Muthappa Rai. 109614

Jainism: History, Society, Philosophy and Practice
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834607; First English Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Jainism is a tradition which dates back thousands of years, which is unbelievably rich and profound, and which has certain unmistakable signs of identity. Contrary to what some might think, it is not in any sense a poor relation of Buddhism, nor is a strange, atheistic and ascetic sect within Hinduism. Jainism is, above all, the religion of non-violence (ahimsa), an ideal which all other religions of India were subsequently to make theirs and which was made universal by Gandhi in the 20th century. Like Buddhism, Jainism is a religion without God which paradoxically opens to the truly sacred in the deepest reaches of all living beings in the cosmos. And it is also the religion of non-absolutism (anekantavada), a particular form of philosophical pluralism, which seems astonishingly modern. Indian Palaeography
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121500281; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The study of Indian palaeography grew out of the necessity for deciphering the large number of inscriptions found in the sub-continent. A further development came through the need to use the changing forms of letters as an aid to determining the dates of some inscriptions. For this latter purpose we now have a large number of charts at our disposal. Yet an absolute chronology has not been possible. The present work is intended to explain the difficulty, to redefine palaeography in the context of out technological advances and to seek, through its study, a better understanding of the civilization of south Asia. The book covers a wide field and deals with written materials from the earliest period to the eighth century AD found all over this far-flung area, and it explains, with the help of figures and charts, the interrelation of the cultures to the various zones. This second edition carries a new preface with a section of Indian Numerals. Printed Pages: 326 with 23 plates. 039265

978 Ahmed S. Hashim
Insurgency and Counter-Insurgency in Iraq
Hurst & Company; London, UK; 1850657955; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In this sobering account of the ongoing violence in Iraq, Ahmed Hashim, a specialist on Middle Eastern startegic issues and irregular warfare, reveals the insurgents behind the widespread revolt, their motives, and their tactics. The insurgency, he shows, is not a united movement directed by a leadership with a single ideological vision. Instead, it involves former regime loyalists, Iraqis resentful of foreign occupation, foreign and domestic Islamist extremists, and elements of organized crime. These groups have cooperated with one another in the past and coordinated their attacks; but the alliance between nationalist Iraqi insurgents on the one hand and religious extremists has frayed considerably. The U.S. -led offensive to retake Fallujah in November 2004 and the success of the elections for the Iraqi National Assembly in January 2005 have led more 'mainstream' insurgent groups to begin thnking of reinforcing the political arm of their opposition movement and to seek political guarantees for the Sunni Arab community in the new Iraq. Hashim begins by placing the Iraqi revolt in its historical context. He next profiles the various insurgent groups, detailing their origins, aims, and operational and tactical modi operandi. He concludes with an unusually candid assessment of the successes and failures of the Coalition's counter-insurgency campaign. In place of sensational headlines, official triumphalism, and hand-wringing, Insurgency and Counter-Insurgency in Iraq offers a clear-eyed analysis of the increasingly complex violence that threatens the very future of Iraq. Contents Acknowledgements Preface Maps 1. Evolution of the Iraqi Insurgency: from Conventional to Partisan Warfare during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2. Origins and Motives of the Insurgency 3. Do the Poor Matter Enough: A Comparative Study of European Aid for Poverty Reduction in India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8170229146; Hardcover; New; New;
This book, based on the study of 33 projects in India aided by six European donors. The European Commission, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and United Kingdom seeks to examine the aid programmes from the perspective of poverty reduction. It conceptualises poverty alleviation as a multi-dimensional phenomenon which involves changes in livelihoods, resources, knowledge and rights, as also it analyses the manner and means through which the donors aid programmes are organised and implemented. The study also assesses the donor strategies, the donor recipient dialogue, the recipient perception of aid as well as the effectiveness in terms of poverty reduction of the programmes and a number of selected interventions in nine different sectors, namely watershed, irrigation, forestry, drinking water, primary health, primary education, women training, urban housing and self-help projects. This book is useful for those engaged in the formulation and implementation of poverty alleviation programmes, academics working in the field of aid and development, NGOs as well as other development activists. It also serves as a useful supplementary text for courses in higher education and specialised training programmes with focus on aid policy, project and programme design, poverty reduction, government aiddonor relations and so on. Indian Muslims Against British Rule
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351250753; Hardcover; New; New;
This book ‘Indian Muslims Against British Rule’ includes the events of the Uprising of 1857 and the participation of the Muslims, particularly the theologians as their religious duty to uproot the British rule from the Indian subcontinent. This work is an attempt to prove the Muslim, a true patriot and the real hero of the first war of independence, and remind the readers, what actually happened during the inordinate episode in 1857 and thereafter. It’s the work of different historical dimension with independent analysis and research in the modern context. In this work, I have tried to do justice to the ideologically complex topic which was the need of the time and awaken my readers about the Muslim torch bearers which always taught the lesson of love to the country and its people irrespective of caste and creed. Apart from the general history of the Uprising, the role of the Wahabi and Faraizi Movements also has been discussed in the context of the circumstances after a deep research and analysis. The role of the personalities like Bahadur Shah Zafar, General Bakht Khan, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Mirza Ghalib, and other related personalities have been very widely discussed. The print media or journalism of that time, particularly the Urdu Press which was the main source of inspiration to the common people has also been discussed in detail. I have much hope with this book that it would change the common mindset which has been developed about the Indian Muslim since the partition of India. Printed Pages: 242. 112373

The Secret: A Contemplation on the Nature of Identity, Reality and Mystery
Yogi Impressions; Mumbai, India; 8190105949; First Edition; Pocketbook; New; New; 5.25 x 4.25 Inches
"Some secrets ache to be shared... losing nothing in their telling and offering everything in their hearing." ’The Secret’ is a contemplation on the nature of Identity, Reality and Mystery. Following in the tradition of Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Shikibu and Mirabai, these verses contain an appeal which is timeless and universal, speaking on many levels simultaneously, whilst mirroring the urge to bypass tradition and ritual with the ultimate objective of direct experience. Aine Keenan travelled to Mumbai in India to be in the presence of the famous Advaita sage Ramesh Balsekar, and absorb his teachings. Balsekar’s philosophy is the acceptance of the absoluteness of the Divine will based on the non-duality of Advaita Vedanta. This is an inspiring collection of poems written over the period of time Aine attended the morning 'satsang' at Balsekar’s residence. Printed Pages: 128. 003053

The Indus Saga - From Pataliputra to Partition
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8174364218; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
The Indus region, comprising the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent (now Pakistan), has always had its distinct identity—racially, ethnically, linguistically and culturally. In the last five thousand years this region has been a part of India politically for only five hundred years. Pakistan, then, is no ‘artificial’ state conjured up by the disaffected Muslim elite of British India. Aitzaz Ahsan surveys the history of Indus—as he refers to this region—right from the time of the Harappan civilization to the era of the British Raj, concluding with Independence and the creation of Pakistan. Ahsan’s message is aimed both at Indians still nostalgic about ‘undivided’ India and at his Pakistani compatriots who narrowly tend to define their identity by their ‘un-Indianness’. EXCERPT: ‘Two generations of Pakistanis have been told that their very identity was their “un-Indianness”: banish this thought from the mind and Pakistan will collapse. Moreover, the Pakistani is Muslim and the Indian is Hindu. Period. That alone was the rationale of the partition of the subcontinent. But even if valid, being “un-Indian” is a manifestly incomplete answer to any question about identity. It only purports to state what the Pakistani is not. It does not address the issue as to what indeed he is … The Pakistani does not necessarily have to be an Indian, but he has to be somebody. Who is that somebody? Moreover the smug answer ascribing a singular role in the Partition to the differences between Hindus and Muslims fails to deal with the fact that the number of Muslims in India is greater than the population of Pakistan ... That is why some questions remain: is the centripetal pull of India an inexorable force that could again pull the Indus region (Pakistan) to itself? Or does the Indus region have a primordial existence outside India? Does it not have an identity of its own? Printed Pages: 467. 011953

992 Aitzaz Ahsan and Meghnad Desai
Divided By Democracy
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8174364250; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
The second book in the Cross-border Talks series examines why India is a democracy while Pakistan is not. Meghnad Desai identifies the revolutionary decision of the Constituent Assembly to adopt universal adult franchise as the key to the survival of democracy in India. The overwhelming desire of the leaders of the independence movement, many of whom were educated in England, was for a Westminster-style democracy. The adoption of this model led to demands for inclusion from lower and backward castes and Dalits, and today Indian democracy is a heady and vigorous mix of ethnic and immigrant groups, class cleavages as well as rural/urban and North/South divisions. Aitzaz Ahsan argues that at Partition, while India had a strong middle class and political structure and a subordinated civil and military bureaucracy, in Pakistan it was the opposite. It inherited a strong feudal class, an insignificant bourgeoisie and an entrenched civil and military bureaucracy. These vested interests have never relinquished their control over the country, and have in the process choked the spirit of democracy there. Printed Pages: 144. 012380

Be Your Own Astrologer: Vedic Astrology Made Simple
Wisdom Tree; New Delhi, India; 8186685472; Softcover; New;
Astrology began when man looked up at the sky for answers to questions about life, himself and people he knew. He found the knowledge he was looking for in the universe around him, a wisdom that reached its pinnacle in the Vedic age. The Vedas call astrology the 'eye' by which man can see and understand. The author, a reputed astrologer, systematically unties the knots of the complex science of Vedic astrology, and presents it in a very simple and lucid manner.Printed Pages: 332. 106764

Firaq Gorakhpuri: The Poet of Pain and Ecstasy
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174369228; Softcover; New;
One of contemporary India’s most prolific Urdu poets, Firaq Gorakhpuri was well known for his ghazals, nazms, rubaais and qat’aa. His magnum opus, Gul-e-Naghma, won him the Jnanpith Award (1969), India’s first highest literary honour for literature. The other awards bestowed upon him include the Sahitya Akademi Award (1960), and the Ghalib Academy Award (1981). In this personalized biography, Firaq’s nephew, Ajai Mansingh, tells the compelling tale of the poet's life, inspiration, and struggles – shedding light on the trials and tribulations of one of India’s greatest literary figures. ‘Firaq is a poet of the labyrinths of emotions, the sensuousness and transcendence of beauty, and the merging shades of pain and ecstasy. The softness and suppleness of his voice does not have a parallel in Urdu poetry.’ — Gopi Chand Narang. Printed Pages: 280. 108527
