Vedic Elements in Puranic Mantras and Rituals
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 2000; 8170815134; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book presents a comparative study of some Vedic elements such as deities, mantra-s, rituals, myths etc., reflected in the Purana-s. Purana-s, the literature of the masses, attempt at the re-statement of the meaning of the Veda-s in their own style. In doing so, they resort to additions, omissions, simplifications and modifications; yet the main stream is never lost sight of Well considered arrangement of the chapters and two appendices, giving a bird's eye-view of the position of the Vedic mantra-s in the Purana-s, special features of the book. It is hoped that this seminal work, presenting a comparative angle, would be of great help to those interested in such studies.Printed Pages: 404. 103945

Introduction to Tantra, 2 Vols
Cosmo Publisher; New Delhi, India; 2001; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Some years ago. Professor Cowell wrote, "the Tantras from a branch of literature highly esteemed though at present much neglected". The Tantra Sastra. together with its accompanying oral tradition, is the voluminous source of the greater part of The Hindu ritual, Hathayoga, and the various forms of spiritual training which pass under the generic term "Sadhana."In fact, both popular and esoteric Hinduism is. in its practical aspects. largely Tantrik. Recently an increased interest has been shown in the Hindu beliefs and traditions. Hitherto, however, attention has chiefly directed to those great Vedantik principles, which, subsumed, to a greater or less degree, in the beliefs and practices of all the Hindu sects are yet. in their conscious realization, the very end only of the highest spiritual effort. Little has been done to present the practical application of those principals in the particular form which they assume in the various divisions, methods, and rituals of the Indian worshippers. This side of practice, though neglected, has booth intrinsic value and helps to a clearer and deeper understanding of the general principles than can be gathered from any bare theoretical statement of them. The knowledge of hymn, and legend, of worship and sadhana, will alone give that full knowledge of the Hindu spirit without which its religious and philosophical nceptions are likely to be but poorly understood. The present development of upasana (worship) and sadhana can only be learnt from the Tantra, the Mantra and Sadhana Sastra. The text guides the reader towards a greater understanding of the secrets, expalining various important and key facets, in language simple enough for a genaral reader to understand the mysteries of Tantra and clear enough for a student to provoke him into further research on the subject. In the Public’s Interest: Evictions, Citizenship and Inequality in Contemporary Delhi
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062327; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Like many cities in the global South, New Delhi has not been built by architects, engineers or planners, but by residents themselves. One form of such auto-construction is the basti—an urban settlement that houses income-poor residents. A basti marks years of an urban life, built slowly and incrementally. It is more than a ‘slum’—it is a claim to development and citizenship. In the moment of the basti’s eviction, this claim is erased, signifying a closure for the political, legal, social and economic negotiations that allowed a vulnerable citizenry to settle and survive for decades.Contemporary Delhi is a city scarred by the evictions of bastis. Ironically, many of these evictions were ordered in Public Interest Litigations by the Indian Judiciary. How did a judicial innovation introduced precisely to enable the marginalised to seek justice become an instrument of their exclusion? Drawing on an archive of court cases that resulted in evictions in Delhi from 1990 to 2007 as well as ethnographic research with basti residents and social movements resisting eviction, In the Public’s Interest shows how evictions have been fundamental to how urban space is been structured and produced, and asks what they tell us about the contemporary Indian city.Students and scholars of sociology, urban studies, development studies and geography will find this book engaging and useful. Sacred Hindu Symbols
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170173973; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Hinduism is not merely a religion but a way of life. Hinduism, in its traverse of four thousand years, has accumulated many a belief and practice, which encompass the whole socio-religio-cultural life of a devout. Since the mythological past, Hinduism is studded with varied signs and symptoms, which are mystic in character and symbolic in nature, and are also sacred symbols of spiritualism as well. These symbols are the sacred rivers; mystic mantras like ‘OM’ and GAYATRI; the auspicious symbol of Swastika; the Shivalinga, Salagram Shila or sacred stone objects; Tripundra Tilaks or Urdhapundra Tilaks- the process of besmearing the body with different marks of sandal pastes; the sacred conch or Sankha and venerated trees which have medicinal value and spiritual ethos like Tulsi, Vata, Rudraksha, etc. All these are part of modern Hinduism but to many devouts and observers these symbols stand enigmatic! Thus this book attempts to explore and unearth the hidden philosophy of these signs and gauge the socio-scientific base and tries to find out the real meaning of ritualistic methodologies of these symbols, which are the great objects of veneration of the Hindus down the ages. An Introduction to Experimental Economics
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8125060790; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Experiments in economics involve gathering human subjects in a classroom or a computer laboratory, presenting them with a situation and making them take decisions that are monetarily incentivised. These decisions will later be analysed statistically or econometrically to yield results that confirm, but also challenge, predictions of economic theory, thereby expanding the boundaries of knowledge regarding human economic behaviour and its motives.An Introduction to Experimental Economics details the methodology, procedure and protocol to be followed while conducting experiments in economics. It draws the contours of the newly emerging discipline through the main areas where experiments are being used:· games involving strategic decisions where there are two players and the decision of one player is contingent upon how she expects the other player to behave,· public goods games designed to test the existence of the free rider problem through a voluntary contributions mechanism, and · games involving a choice between two or more lotteries that explain decision-making under conditions of uncertainty.A unique feature is the discussion on experiments designed to elicit the impact of community, caste, religion and multiplicity of culture, based on the author’s rigorous work in the field. Written in simple language, and with practical applications in mind—a chapter is devoted on how to use z-Tree, an open source software which can be used to effectively run experiments in a lab—this book will interest students and scholars of economic theory and its empirical verification. India Indonesia Legacy of Intimate Encounters
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8192611477; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Evidences suggest that India and Indonesia were in trade relations for many millennia, starting from 3500 bce. Suvarnabhumi (Sumatra) is mentioned in Jatakas, Indian epics and Mahavamsa, though there is no sequential documentation of it. The trade relations paved the way for Bali importing Indian pottery, priests coming from India and getting absorbed into the Indonesian society and the Indian traders and priests marrying the locals and settling there, thus spreading Hinduism and Indian culture throughout Java, Bali and Sumatra. Indonesia thus got all three religions — Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam — from India.The historical and civilizational relations continued till the sixteenth century ce. The Western colonization drive of Asian countries broke this long-stood relationship. Coming to the twentieth century, Indonesia and its leaders were highly inspired by the anti-colonial views of Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Rabindranath Tagore, and India extended her moral support to the freedom struggle of Indonesia. But during the post-colonial era, the bilateral relations between both the countries were incoherent. The Look East Policy of India in the 1990s rejuvenated the relations and Indonesia became one of the greatest allies in fulfilling India’s South-East Asia Policy.The scholarly articles in this volume vividly talk about topics that foster(ed) mutual relations such as culture, religion, language, traditions, education and so on, keenly drawing the attention of policy makers, trade analysts, cultural enthusiasts, investors, among a wide range of audience. India Indonesia Bilateral Ties: An Introspection
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8192570231; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
India and Indonesia experienced close historical and civilizational relations from the ancient times to sixteenth century ce. During the Indonesian freedom struggle, its leaders were inspired by the anti-colonial views of Indian leaders. India firmly stood for the freedom of Indonesia from the Dutch. During the post-colonial period, the bilateral relations underwent ups and downs. India’s Look East Policy of the 1990s made a phenomenal leap in both the countries’ relationship. India by leveraging its soft power, stable foreign policy, non-interference policy established trust among many South-East Asian countries and in particular Indonesia. Indonesia, being the largest country in the region, has been proved as one of the greatest allies of India. After a decade of stable governance under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia now has a fairly strong democratic set-up. The country made the transition after thirty-one years of dictatorship of Soeharto, under the leadership of B.J. Habibie, Abdurrhaman Wahid and Megawati Soekarnoputri. Now, when both the countries are poised to fly high after having witnessed considerable economic reforms, they need to forge stronger ties in order to further expand bilateral trade and strategic relations, being the main focus of this volume.Printed Pages: 287. 100536

The Fall and Rise of Telangana
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125054731; Hardcover; New; New;
Post Independence, the state of Andhra Pradesh was created by merging the Telangana region, a part of the princely state of Hyderabad, with the coastal region of Andhra and Rayalaseema—both parts of the erstwhile Madras state. With Madras, the major source of income of the state, allocated to Tamil Nadu, it was necessary to include the revenue-surplus Telangana to create a financially viable entity. However, there had always been doubts about the long-term feasibility of such an arrangement. Jawaharlal Nehru had even considered the provision of a ‘divorce’ if the ‘marriage’ between the three regions did not turn out to be mutually beneficial. Despite several agreements, laws and government orders safeguarding the interests of the people of Telangana, modern history records a sordid tale of exploitation, agitation, assurances and broken promises. The author shows how the Srikrishna Commission that was formed to look into the matter and impartially recommend a way forward ‘subverted’ the process and came forward with a predetermined solution. Today, despite violent agitation, the surplus revenue of the region continues to be disproportionately diverted to Coastal Andhra, while land around Hyderabad is quite often illegally allocated to land sharks from other regions. The author has painstakingly dissected the Telangana problem from its inception to the where a separate state seems to be inevitable. He has identified the political reasons for the behaviour of the national leaders in making promises and later reneging on them, and shows how this betrayal has affected the people of the region. In the final chapter, the author proposes a model for the trifurcation of the state and how this can be made equitable and just. Vocal and hard-hitting, this book will be valuable for students of political science and general readers interested in the movement.Printed Pages: 344. 101903

Gautam Sachdeva first visited the Advaita sage Ramesh Balsekar in February 2000, and has been attending his talks ever since. Explosion of Love
Yogi Impressions Books Pvt. Ltd.; Mumbai, India; 2015; 8188479861; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Ouroborus is a mythological symbol of a snake swallowing its own tail. In doing so it forms a circle that represents both the cycle and the dualities of birth and death. It thus becomes a symbol of eternal unity, showing us what we truly are – not the mortal body but the immortal Consciousness.Filled with unexpected strokes of humour, this collection of short essays emerged from the author’s interactions with a modern Sage and his teaching on Advaita, the Indian philosophy of non-duality.The teaching was a reaffirmation of Gautam’s life experiences that provided invaluable lessons on true forgiveness, hope, life and death, which is reflected in these pages. All of this comes together in one of the final essays on the 26/11 terror attack – an important lesson for the turbulent world we live in today. At the core of these writings lies the universal message, conveyed with an enlightening perspective, of true love and forgiveness – the two forces that ultimately provide the healing touch.Printed Pages: 204. 103483

Ramesh Balsekar Yanchi Margadarshak Tattve (in Marathi)
Yogi Impressions Books Pvt. Ltd.; Mumbai, India; 2015; 9789382742173; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Gautam Sachdeva first visited the Advaita sage Ramesh Balsekar in February 2000, and has been attending his talks ever since. Over a period of eight years, he also found himself taking on the role of a publisher, working intimately with Ramesh in the process of publishing some of his books.In May 2007, Gautam wrote an article in Life Positive, India’s leading spiritual magazine, as a tribute to Ramesh on his 90th birthday. With the heartwarming response from readers to this article, and Ramesh’s suggestion to make it into a booklet, he then put down what he considered the core of the teaching as presented by Ramesh – to seekers from all over the world – in his morning talks. Most of Ramesh’s books have been published from his original hand-written notes, or are transcripts of dialogues with seekers. This book is a summation of the core concepts in the “spoken word” of Ramesh, as if he were walking the seeker through his entire teaching in one morning talk. This is what Pointers from Ramesh Balsekar is about – pointers to dealing with life’s situations, its pleasures and pains, with equanimity and peace of mind – from one of the world’s leading Advaita sages.Printed Pages: 124. 103525

All manner of ceremonial throne cars, hunting cars, wedding cars and cars for state processions were owned by 500-odd Indian princes who tried to outdo each other in terms of pomp, glamour and splendour. Communication with God: The Daily Puja Ceremony in the Jagannatha Temple
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2004; 817305262X; Hardcover; New; New;
The work for the first time presents in a very detailed manner the various rites in forming the daily puja ceremony of one of the most famous and important temples of Hindus-Jagannatha Temple at Puri. The study is based on a large number of au then tic palm -leaf manuscripts discovered and collected by the author in Orissa, substantiated by his personal observation and information acquired from the temple functionaries. It is a well known fact that the study of Hindu temple rituals has not yet been taken up so extensively and seriously as that of the Vedic rituals. This work seeks to fill up this desirable gap and is a significant contribution to the study of the process of formation of the medieval Hinduism and its gradual development.The rite of the Hindu puja is basically a very subtle and sublime spiritual phenomenon in which the worshipper, in the course of meditation, first dissolves his mundane body to create a divine body for himself, identical in nature with that of his Deity. Thereafter visualizing the tejas of the Deity in his heart through concentrated meditation upon His/Her form, he transfers this divine effulgence into the image for the time being in order to achieve a subject-object relationship with the Deity, who is identical with the self, and starts communicating with his God from the same elevated plane.Printed Pages: 532. 101669

Vaidik Devata: Udbhav evam Vikas
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8124605912; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
There have been quite a few attempts to delineate the nature and character of Vedic Deities on the basis of Vedic Samhitas by European scholars like Macdonell, Hillebrandt, Oldenberg, Luders and, of late, by Oberlies, etc. However, none of these scholars has made attempt to trace the subsequent development of their character and personalities through the later Vedic texts, epics and the Puranas, etc., whereas it goes without saying that the concept of Hindu gods today in the minds of the people is exactly the one which we encounter in the Puranas and in the folk literature. This obviously means that the personalities of the Vedic Deities did not freeze with the end of Vedic literature but continued to develop in later period as well through the subsequent literarary activities. Taking rather vague clues from the Vedic texts, the authors or narrators of the Puranas, augmented and supported by folk beliefs, further expanded, modified and developed the personalities of these gods so that, for the most part, the intangible character of these gods acquired a concrete shape and form, a body of flesh and blood, so to say. The book tries to trace the historical development of the personalities of Vedic Deities through the subsequent Vedic literature, as well as the epics and the Puranas till they acquire the shape and form in which they are conceived and venerated today.Printed Pages: 698. 100456

Shri Suparanadhyayah: With Padapatha and a Hitherto Unknown Commentary By Jayasvamin (A Metrical Play of the Late Vedic Age)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789380829371; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 17 x 26 Cm
The experiences and knowledge from our past are recorded in manuscripts which have been handed down to us over several thousand years. The Government of India, through the Department of Culture, took note of the importance of this vast tangible heritage and, in order to preserve and conserve as well as to make access to this wealth easy, established the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM). In order to disseminate the knowledge content of manuscripts, the Mission has taken up several programmes such as lectures, seminars and workshops. The Mission has published the proceedings of the above-said programmes under the following series: “Samrakshika” (on conservation), “Tattvabodha” (comprising lectures based on manuscripts delivered by eminent scholars), “Samikshika” (research-oriented papers presented in the seminars), and “Kritibodha” (transcribed and edited texts prepared at advanced level manuscriptology workshops conducted by NMM.NMM has taken up a project for publishing rare and unpublished manuscripts in three formats — (a) Facsimile, (b) Critical edition with annotation and (c) Critical edition with translation. This series has been named as “Prakashika”. Suparnadhyaya critically edited by Prof. G.C. Tripathi comes under this Prakashika series.Suparnadhyaya, Suparnadhyanam or simply Sauparnam is a later Vedic text of Indian dramatic tradition, lesser known to scholars primarily due to the fact that it was never translated into English language. This play, normally enacted during the festival of Indradhvaja, has a plot which is woven around the story of the incredible dexterity and strength of Garuda and his wondrous deed of bringing soma (amrita) from Indra’s heaven for the sake of Snakes, after defeating Indra’s guards and ridiculing his divine weapon. This story finds a mention even in Mahabharata. This short play is in a metrical form, interspersed with occasional prose-pieces.This text has come down to us in an incorrect form due to faulty manuscript tradition. In this volume, the author has tried to restore the text with the help of higher textual criticism and has given due justification for his amendments. It presents the text with English and Hindi translations for the benefit of those readers who are not conversant with Sanskrit. Printed Pages: 336 with 11 colour photographs. 110935

The Art of Interpreting Horoscopes
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120835204; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
India has always been an astrological society but at some point of time in the early part of the 20th century, the educated began to develop a certain distaste for this ancient science, largely because of the educational system in the country which distanced itself from the traditional branches of learning under a mistaken notion that by doing so, it was proving its rational credentials. However astrology being as good a science as any other of the modern ones, has stood the test of time and in recent years has made a resurgent reappearance as a result of my revered father, Father of Modern Astrology, the Late Dr. B. V. Raman's relentless efforts to propagate it as an academic subject. Astrology has now captured the interest of large segments of the educated public. The wave of resurgence has swept away this pseudo-rationalist resistance bringing with it the realization of the invaluable role astrology can play in helping cope with the ills of modern society. There has been some kind of snowballing effect in educated circles, both in our own country as well as in the west, primarily the United States of America, in their eagerness to retrieve, revive and restore Jyotish to its pristine glory. The ancient classical works on the subject are now being eagerly lapped up but the problem begins because of the times when the astrological rules were first formulated being so different from our own. The author has made effort to adapt and apply these rules in the form of dicta, Yogas and combinations to contemporary life in the process seeking to bridge the gap between the ancient rules and their applicational value to the present.Printed Pages: 336. 102620

The author has made effort to adapt and apply these rules in the form of dicta, Yogas and combinations to contemporary life in the process seeking to bridge the gap between the ancient rules and their applicational value to the present.Printed Pages: 336. 102621

Astrology and Pseudo Scientific Criticism
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; Softcover; New;
There have been strong attacks against Astrology and objections to it being described as Science in some sections of the Scientific fraternity following the University Grants Commission's February 2001 proposal to introduce astrology in the Universities. The Criticism has done Little to hurt astrology and its case but has exposed the bias and ignorance behind these attacks. Most of the times, the arguments against astrology appear to be based on, not what astrology is but what its critics assume it to be. Such assumption is invariably based on bias, prejudice, misinformation and of course, ignorance. In this book, the author exposes the hollowness and invalidity of such attacks. It is an unfortunate reflection on the degree of Prejudice against astrology that even crude lies have been made a part of the anti-astrology campaign. She has brought to light certain unpalatable and unpleasant facts concerning such concoctions.Printed Pages: 85. 102624

Satish Gujral: An Artography
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8174364285; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 12 x 12 Inches
Satish Gujral: An Artography traces the aesthetic and personal journey of a pioneer of modern Indian art, over the last five decades. A true Renaissance artist, Satish Gujral defies categorization. Painter, sculptor, muralist, architect, interior designer and more, he has ventured beyond the conventional boundaries of individual art forms. A master of medium, he has painted in oil and acrylic, sculpted using wood, bronze and granite, made paper collages and ceramic murals, designed buildings in brick and stone, and left his mark in metal and glass, creating works that telescope the past with contemporary history, and represent a continuum between distinct art forms. A twenty-first century Da Vinci, Satish Gujral is forever in quest of a new theme. His early experiences with deafness, the horrors of Partition, nationalistic politics, the idealization of his elder brother, Inder Gujral, and his training in art, especially under Mexican muralist David Alfaro Sequeiros, have manifestly enriched and contributed to his evolution as an artist. While hope and exuberance remain common denominators of his art, he has never fought shy of expressing his sense of outrage at human degradation. Printed Pages: 276. 014661

India-Pakistan War 1965
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649662; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The 1965 India-Pakistan War saw the Indian Armed Forces graduate from the tactical level of operations to the scale of Operational Art. Some 12 Divisions of the Indian Army and a little over half its Air Force saw live combat. The 1965 India- Pakistan War was a limited conflict, more in the tradition of what the Chinese call – local wars under high-tech conditions. Actually the limitations in this war had emerged, not so much from intent but capacity constraints. How relevant are the lessons of this war to the South Asian context today? Now we have a nuclear backdrop which imposes severe constraints on the level and extent of force usage and the time duration of the conflict. That is precisely why – the 1965 War model – with its shallow penetrations , and overall an attrition oriented design, has remarkable levels of relevance for any future war that may break out between India and Pakistan in the years ahead. In 1965, India had very deliberately sought to bring to battle and destroy/degrade the Pakistani Armoured division on Pakistani soil. That may well turn out to be the model for future India-Pakistan wars against a nuclear backdrop. It would not so much be to capture territory but to bring to battle and maul/destroy Pakistani military formations in battles of attrition that take place very close to the borders. The intent would be to specifically raise costs for the Pakistan. Hence, even though our military capacities have increased vastly since then, the nuclear backdrop imposes severe constraints on how much of our capacity we can use in the next war and how? The 1965 War offers surprisingly relevant models and lessons. Hence, the urgent need to study it in detail and trawl it for useful lessons. The strong point of this book is its attempt to provide an objective and balanced account that takes advantage of memoirs published by combatants on both sides. This war provided an excellent learning opportunity for our senior military leadership and set in train a historical process which culminated in a decisive defeat for Pakistan in the 1971 War.Printed Pages: 152. 105026

2014: Nationalism and National Security in India
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649679; First Edition; Softcover; New;
2014 was a critical year that saw the revival of Nationalism in India. This book examines Indian Nationalism and takes a close look at India’s National Security. It revisits the somber truth about our freedom struggle. This book uses the technique of Pattern Modelling to study India’s recent history and make forecasts about its collective future. Patterns tend to persist and repeat themselves cyclically. Hence, they become the basis for Heuristic forecasts about the future. This book, therefore, is in two parts. Part one takes an analytical look at our last 70-80 years to identify the patterns. Book two then uses this pattern analysis to make forecasts about our near term future in terms of a Net Assessment that uses the tools of Trends, Drivers and Discontinuities to create a set of Alternative Futures.Printed Pages: 318. 105027

The Rise of Indian Military Power : Evolution of an Indian Strategic Culture (Second Edition)
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649495; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
This is a monumental & epic work on India’s Military History. It seeks to answer the seminal question – ‘Is there an Indian Way of War-fighting and an Indian Strategic Culture?’ The author has traced the history of war-fighting in India from the Vedic & Mahabharatan period to the Mauryan & Mughal Eras and thereafter the British Period. It is a comprehensive audit of India’s combat performance in the ancient, medieval, modern and post-modern periods of Indian history. The focus of this work however, is on India’s Post-independence Military History. The author has analysed each of India’s wars with China & Pakistan as also its CI and CT campaigns in meticulous detail, to draw lessons for the future. The path-breaking contribution is the author’s thesis that there have been three local Revolutions in Military Affairs (RMAs) in India, which shaped the course & flow of her history. Each of these RMAs helped to unify India under a great Empire and transformed it from a civilisational entity to a strong empire state. The first was the Mauryan RMA of using War Elephants in mass to generate shock & awe. This politically unified the whole of India and Afghanistan for the first time. The next RMA came with the Mughals who introduced Field Artillery, Muskets and Horsed Cavalry Archers with stirrups and cross bows. The Mughal horsed cavalry and artillery helped spawn the mighty Mughal Empire. The Third RMA came with the British who raised local Infantry Battalions on the European Pattern and drilled them to shoot in disciplined rhythms, to defeat all cavalry charges. This Infantry-based RMA helped establish the British Empire in India. The present Republic is a successor entity of the British Empire. The author has traced the evolution of India’s Strategic Culture to the Arthashastra of Kautilya. The surprise finding is that in the 1971 War – India unconsciously returned to this Kautilyan paradigm of using information dominance, covert war and Shock- Action military campaigns to defeat its adversaries. In the post-independence phase he traces the evolution of India’s war-fighting from the tactical phase of 1947-1962 when India’s capacity was confined to use of 2-3 Divisions alone. The 1965 War saw the graduation to the level of Operational Art, wherein 12 Divisions and a bulk of the Indian Air Force (IAF) saw active combat. The apogee came in 1971 – when India fought a brilliant, Quasi-Total, Tri-Service Campaign that broke Pakistan into two, put 93,000 prisoners of war in the bag and for the first time after the Second World War, created a new nation state with the Force of Arms. He traces the impact of nuclearisation on South Asia and prognosticates about the Future. The time has come, he asserts, for India to create a Fourth RMA in South Asia; and decisively shape outcomes. For this, economic power must be rapidly converted into usable military power. India must field dominant war fighting capabilities in South Asia.Printed Pages: 418. 105031

China's Military Power: A Net Assessment
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649396; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is a structured net assessment of China’s military power by a reputed and well-known Indian military analyst. The growth of Chinese military power has been examined with emphasis on how it primarily affects India. The book analyses how India must respond. It has an exhaustively researched section on how the Chinese PLA has performed in actual combat since 1949, and a detailed analysis of the evolution of China’s military doctrines and strategic Culture. The most dangerous for India is the exponential growth in the Chinese Airpower (PLAAF). China has already changed Asia’s balance of power.Printed Pages: 392. 105047
