Materials on Forest Enets, an Indigenous Language of Northern Siberia
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9525667456; New;
iMaterials on Forest Enets/i is the first comprehensive and functional-typologically informed description of a Samoyedic language. It covers all major aspects of the grammar of Forest Enets as spoken by its last fluent speakers in Potapovo and Dudinka. The monograph is based almost entirely on primary data, which was either collected during several fieldtrips on the Taimyr Peninsula or via consultant work, both conducted between 2006 and 2011. iMaterials on Forest Enets/i discusses the language of the last speakers from a general perspective presenting all data fully glossed; thereby, the monograph will also be comprehensible to linguists not specializing on Samoyedic languages. Existence and Enlightenment in the Lankavatara-Sutra (A Study in the Ontology and Epistemology of the Yogacara School of Mahayana Buddhism)
Sri Satguru Publications; Delhi, India; 1992; 8170303117; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This Book offers a systematic analysis of one of the most important concepts characterizing the Yogacara School of Buddhism (the last creative stage of Indian Buddhism as outlined and explained in one of its most authoritative and influential texts, Lankavatara-sutra. Compiled in the second half of the fourth-century A.D., this sutra not only represents a comprehensive synthesis of both early and late religio-philosophical ideas crucial to the understanding of Buddhism in India, but it also provides and Insight into the very early Roots of Japanese Zen Buddhism in the heart of the South Asian esotericism.The first part of the book outlines the three-fold nature of being, as conceptualized in Buddhist metaphysics. The Author uses an interpretive framework borrowed from the existentialist philosophy of Heidgger, in order to separate the transcendental Essence of Being from its Temporal manifestation as Self, and from its Spatial or Cosmic dimension. The second part clarifies the Buddhist approach to knowledge in its religious, transcendental sense and it shows that the Buddhists were actually first in making use of dialectical reasoning for the purpose of transcending the contradictory dualities imbedded in the common ways of perceiving, thinking, and arguing about reality.Printed Pages: 393. 101128

10007 Fouad Zakariyya
Myth and Reality in the Contemporary Islamic Movement
Routledge; London, UK; 2005; 0745322468; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This classic book explores the intellectual, political and social foundations of Islamism, and current Islamist groups across the Arab and Muslim worlds. Written by Egyptian philosopher and leading Arab intellectual, Fouad Zakariyya, and now available for the first time in English, this thoughtful book has no rival as a critical introduction to the nature of contemporary Islamism. The book was written in the aftermath of the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, and at the height of global debates about the relevance of Islamism in contemporary Muslim societies -- especially in the light of Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979. Zakariyya offers an important analysis of the multiple voices of current Islamism. He explores various recent attempts to construct an Islamic social and political order, presenting a sustained critique of modern ideological currents and theological worldviews. He delves into the sensitive question of Shari'ah, civil society and democracy in the Arab world. Ultimately, Zakariyya argues for a secular and democratic civil society that is unconstrained by past interpretations of the Shari'ah. Printed Pages: 200. 011263

Apocalypse Pakistan: An anatomy of 'the world's a most dangerous nation'
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523964; Softcover; New;
Pakistan is presently the battle ground on which the unceasing war between the West and the international Islamic terror groups is being fought. After the killing of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad and the case of Raymond Davis—an undercover CIA agent who killed two ISI agents in Lahore but was later released because of his diplomatic status—the relations between the once staunch allies Washington and Islamabad is at the lowest point in decades. How did they reach this point and how could they, for more than a decade, pretend to be fighting the same enemy together? Most importantly, what does the future hold for them and the rest of the world?Apocalypse Pakistan tries to answer these and more introspective questions, by analysing the political and cultural evolution of the Pakistani elite (generals, politicians, etc.) from Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to the present, on topics like the relationship with Afghanistan and China, terrorism and nuclear proliferation. The book is based on first person accounts, reportage and personal interviews with two generations of the Bhuttos, the Sharifs, Hamid Gul and also includes Mohammed Hafeez Saeed’s first ever interview to a woman journalist. The book presents a multi-faceted history of contemporary Pakistan and offers a balanced view without taking sides or trying to offer solutions to govern the country.Printed Pages: 204. 106530

Before the Divide: Hindi and Urdu Literary Culture
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8125042636; Softcover; New;
Today, Hindi and Urdu are considered two separate languages, each with its own script, history, literary canon and cultural orientation. Yet, pre-colonial India was a deeply multilingual society with multiple traditions of knowledge and literary production. Historically the divisions between Hindi and Urdu were not as sharp as we imagine them today. The essays in this volume reassess the definition and identity of language in the light of this. Its aim is to move away from the received historical narratives of Hindi and Urdu, and look afresh at the textual material available in order to attempt a more complex picture of the north Indian literary culture that is more attuned to the nuances of register, accent, language choice, genre and audiences. Various factors that would lead one to consider a broader range of texts and tastes that lay before poets and writers in those times are examined. For instance, why did a Sant write in Nagari Rekhta? Why did a Persian poet or an Avadhi Sufi mix Hindavi and Persian? Whatever their motivations, all these cases speak of an awareness of multiple literary models. It also implies a keenness towards experimenting with other literary or oral traditions that go against the purist intentions of modern literary historians.Printed Pages: 320. 101864

After Timur Left: Culture and Circulation in Fifteenth Century North India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 0199450668; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Timur invaded northern India in 1398 but returned to Samarkand a year later. In 1555 the Timurid emperor Humayun came back to India after being forced into exile in Persia and re-established Mughal rule in northern India. Between these two significant dates stretches an era largely consigned to oblivion—the 'long' fifteenth century. The Mughal dynasty has long occupied a pre-eminent position in research on Indian history. It has also been credited with ushering in a radically new age of innovation in art, literature, and statecraft. But what of the period before the Mughals? With the empire-centred study of history privileging periods of political centralization, the multi-centred fifteenth century has remained relatively unexplored and undervalued. After Timur Left presents a path-breaking interdisciplinary set of writings on the politics, languages, religions, literatures, and arts of the fifteenth century. Together they reveal it to be a period of considerable political and social mobility, of cultural connectivity and consolidation, of innovation in literature and language choices, and of new forms of religious organization and expression Printed Pages: 512. 038928

Humayun's Tomb Conservation
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 8189995960; Softcover; New;
The Humayun’s Tomb-Nizamuddin area, inhabited by a vibrant local community, is visited by millions of tourists and pilgrims each year. Conservation works being undertaken on the monuments in this area have aimed to re-define standard conservation practice in India by setting benchmarks in using a craft-based approach, setting documentation standards, using a participatory and multi-disciplinary approach, and using the conservation initiative as a tool towards improving quality of life for local communities.This book aims to inform the general public about the discipline of conservation and the rationale behind the successful conservation initiative and makes an argument for change in conservation approach in India: from isolated monuments to an urban approach that includes concern for the setting; from a ‘tender-based’ approach to a quality-concerned method; amongst other factors. The Methodology of Experimental Economics
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0521618614; First Paperback Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
The experimental approach in economics is a driving force behind some of the most exciting developments in the field. The ‘experimental revolution’ was based on a series of bold philosophical premises which have remained until now mostly unexplored. This book provides the first comprehensive analysis and critical discussion of the methodology of experimental economics, written by a philosopher of science with expertise in the field. It outlines the fundamental principles of experimental inference in order to investigate their power, scope and limitations. The author demonstrates that experimental economists have a lot to gain by discussing openly the philosophical principles that guide their work, and that philosophers of science have a lot to learn from their ingenious techniques devised by experimenters in order to tackle difficult scientific problems. • First book on experimental economics from the perspective of philosophy of science and social science. • Author has training as experimentalist himself • Ideal for supplementary reading for courses in economic theory and philosophy of science Contents 1. Introduction; Part I. Inferences Within the Experiment: 2. Inside the laboratory; 3. Hypothesis testing; 4. Causation and experimental control; 5. Prediction; 6. Elimination; Part II. The Light of Knowledge: Literacy Activism and the Politics of Writing in South India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8125052356; Hardcover; New; New;
The Arivoli Iyakkam (the Enlightenment Movement) is considered to be among the most successful mass literacy movements in recent history. Led by activists from the people’s science network and the progressive writers association, the Arivoli Iyakkam worked in conjunction with district-level administration to encourage active citizenship among the most oppressed classes in rural Tamil Nadu. In The Light of Knowledge, Francis Cody’s ethnography of this social movement and government program highlights the paradoxes inherent in such movements that seek to emancipate people through literacy when literacy is a power-laden social practice in its own right.The Light of Knowledge is set primarily in the rural district of Pudukkottai and it is about activism among laboring women from marginalized communities who have been particularly active as learners and volunteers in the movement. In their endeavors to remake the Tamil countryside through literacy activism, workers in the movement found that their own understanding of the politics of writing and Enlightenment was often transformed. Indeed, while activists of the movement successfully mobilized large numbers of rural women, they did so through logics that often pushed against the very Enlightenment rationality they hoped to foster. Offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at an important area of activism, The Light of Knowledge engages with critical social theories of language and citizenship. This book will appeal to a range of readers interested in sociology, feminism, development studies, and education.Printed Pages: 272. 101765

Liberation in One Lifetime: Biographies and Teachings of Milarepa
North Atlantic Books/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2014; 1583947930; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Milarepa (1052-1135), a major figure in the history of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and known as one of Tibet's greatest lamas and poets, continues to inspire Buddhist practitioners worldwide to the present day. Liberation in One Lifetime explores the history and spirituality of the Kagyu lineage in relationship to the narratives and teachings attributed to Milarepa by studying some of the earliest versions of these materials. Offering a detailed analysis of the biographical material that has been written about Milarepa (who was also a student of Marpa, a major figure in the development of the Bka'-brgyud-pa school of Tibetan Buddhism), author, theologian, and well-respected Tibetan Buddhist scholar, Francis V. Tiso, describes the historical context of the tradition of hagiography (biography) in Buddhism and other spiritual traditions, and provides a history of Milarepa's influence in Tibet. Part One explains the tradition of composing stories about Milarepa's life and teachings (there have been many throughout the centuries) and includes outlines of the contents of some of them as well as an explanation of the oral versions that have been transmitted via oral epic songs and poems that Milarepa composed. Describing the spiritual components of Bka'-brgyud-pa, Part Two includes tantric practices, an outline for the path of liberation, definitions of "voidness," and the characteristics of fully enlightened Buddhahood. Part Three includes translated biographies and oral teachings of Milarepa (in poetic form) that are considered sacred texts. The book also includes a foreword by Roberto Vitali, a prominent Tibetan Buddhist scholar as well as an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources. Printed Pages: 432. 107504

The Jungle and the Aroma of Meats: An Ecological Theme in Hindu Medicine (Indian Medical Tradition Series), (Second Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120816188; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The theory of humors, vital fluids whose proportions in the human body determine its health and temperament, is far from outdated. And what we sometimes think of as a modern concern with ecology and alternative medicine is really as old as the traditional medical techniques of the classical West of South Asia. It is to the latter that Francis Zimmermann turns his attention, in a remarkable evocation that combines Sanskrit studies and anthropology. He reconstructs and exposes the linkage between humors, persons, and soils in classical Hindu medicine. His work will interested those involved in the areas of medical anthropology, medical anthropology, medical history, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, and South Asian studies. It will also be valued for the vivid and accurate descriptions it offers of a few basic ideas our time has borrowed from Hindu culture: flower power, vegetarianism, non-violence, and the comic dimensions of the human body. In classical Ayurvedic medicine, a comprehensive view of the whole human person included the patient's humoral integration into the surrounding soil. The Jungle was the most crucial environment, and the Jungle was - and is - the dry land of the Punjab and the Delhi Doab, an open vegetation of thorny shrubs. The polarity of dry lands and wet lands framed not only the whole Ayurvedic materia medica but also the more general conception of a comic physiology governed by Agni (the sun) and Soma (the dispenser of rain). Clearing the land and draining the body were two aspects of one and the same art of managing the transactions of all sorts of vital fluids, saps, juices, savors, and humor. Medicine in the context of thought and practice associated with the Jungle was, and still in modern India, a kind of agriculture.Printed Pages: 254. 102675

10058 Francisco J. Varela (narrated and edited); Foreword By His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama; Translated By B. Alan Wallace and Thupten Jinpa
Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying: An Exploration of Consciousness with the Dalai Lama
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 1997; 0861711238; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 6 x 9 Inches
This is an absorbing account of a dialogue between leading Western scientists and the foremost representative of Buddhism today, the Dalai Lama of Tibet. For modern science, the transitional states of consciousness lie at the forefront of research in many fields. For a Buddhist practitioner these same states present crucial opportunities to explore and transform consciousness itself. This book is the account of a historic dialogue between leading Western scientists and the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Revolving around three key moments of consciousness—sleep, dreams, and death—the conversations recorded here are both engrossing and highly readable. Whether the topic is lucid dreaming, near-death experiences, or the very structure of consciousness itself, the reader is continually surprised and delighted. Narrated by Francisco Varela, an internationally recognized neuroscientist, the book begins with insightful remarks on the notion of personal identity by noted philosopher Charles Taylor, author of the acclaimed Sources of Self. This sets the stage for Dr. Jerome Engel, Dr. Joyce MacDougal, and others to engage in extraordinary exchanges with the Dalai Lama on topics ranging from the neurology of sleep to the yoga of dreams. Remarkable convergences between the Western scientific tradition and the Buddhist contemplative sciences are revealed. Dr. Jayne Gackenbach's discussion of lucid dreaming, for example, prompts a detailed and fascinating response from the Dalai Lama on the manipulation of dreams by Buddhist meditators. The conversations also reveal provocative divergences of opinion, as when the Dalai Lama expresses skepticism about "Near-Death Experiences" as presented by Joan Halifax. The conversations are engrossing and highly readable. Any reader interested in psychology, neuroscience, Buddhism, or the alternative worlds of dreams will surely enjoy Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying. Travels in the Mogul Empire AD 1656-68: trans. On the basis of Irving Brock's version and annotated by Archibald Constable, sec. Edn. Revised by V.A. Smith
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1992; 81-215-0568-0; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present work continues to remain as important and as popular as it was in 1671, when its English edition was published. John Dryden, the famous poet and dramatist, drew his inspiration from his last and perfect tragedy Aurang-zebe from the same book. Francois Bernier, being a physician, had an unlimited access. In Mughal India, he could go anywhere from South to North. This freedom of movement combined with his powers of observation adds authority to his narrative. His account of various events during Mughal regime is interesting, because it not only deals with Shah Jahan and his children, their intrigues and battles for the throne but it also deals with subjects like reception of ambassadors; upbringing of princes; bravery of Uzbec women; beauty of Kashmiri women; fishes in the Verinag pool; price of wine; living conditions in the cities of Agra, Delhi and Lahore; flattery in Mughal court; corrupt officials; wealth of the Mughals and condition of the peasants, etc. This translation, by Archibald Constable is revised by the famous historian Vincent A. Smith. As a source book for the conditions in India during the days of the Mughal rule, this book has no rival. Printed Pages: 554. 024182

Strukturalismin historia osa 1
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2011; 9525169707; New;
The Iconography of the Brahadisvara Temple
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2002; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 31 Cm
The programme Ksetra Sampada or regional heritage of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) envisages studies of specific cultural areas taking into account the process of interlocking devotional, artistic, geographical and social aspects. One area identified for such an integrated study was Tanjavur in South India. In collaboration with Ecole Francaise D'Extreme - Orient (EFEO), Pondicherry, IGNCA launched a comprehensive project to investigate the multi-layered and multi-dimensional personality of the Brhadisvara temple at Tanjavur. This in-depth study of the identified area and monument resulted in the publication of Tanjavur Brhadisvara: An Architectural Study, by Pierre Pichard, in 1995. One of the inter-related modules of the project coordinated by Dr. R. Nagaswamy, includes iconographical study of sculptures, stone reliefs, bronze images amd mural paintings. Accordingly, Dr. Francoise L'Hemault of EFEO undertook the task of photo documentation of the icons of the Brhadisvara temple. She completed the assignment in 1994, and based on nearly 600 photographs of the icons, she prepared this monograph as a catalogue for the identification of the iconographical forms on the Brhadisvara temple. This monograph is the second in the series of studies of Brhadisvara undertaken by the IGNCA. It sheds illuminating light on the iconographical forms of the two capital sites of the Cholas, viz., Tanjavur and Gangaikondacholapuram. Breaking Barriers: Essays in Asian and Comparative Philosophy in Honor of Ramakrishna Puligandla
Asian Humanities Press; Fremont, California, USA; 2003; 0895819635; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
Breaking Barriers is a collection of invited contributions by distinguished philosophers, scientists, and religious thinkers of East and West in honor of Professor Ramakrishna Puligandla. The twenty-three essays in this volume may be divided into four groups: (1) Philosophy of Advaita, (2) Buddhism, (3) Indian Philosophy and Physics, and (4) Asian and Comparative Thought. Contributors have written on topics such as the phenomenology of consciousness, science and religion, and comparative philosophy and religion. The volume is designed to stimulate the interest of students, professors, and all those who wish to explore new knowledge. In this volume, the creative thought of leading thinkers from principal universities in India and elsewhere transcends words without insight, barren arguments, and all limiting paradigms. Breaking Barriers thus represents a multi-disciplinary approach informed by cross-cultural philosophical vision. Modern physics and classical Indian philosophy exist here in unity. Radical Universalism: Does Hinduism Teach that all Religions are the Same?
Voice of India; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8185990824; Softcover; New;
This book was originally published by Dr. Frank Morales, Ph.D. as a long philosophical essay. His essay was destined to be read by over one-million people within only two years after its initial appearances, and to forever change the way the world understands the true nature, beauty, and teachings of Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism). In this newly revised and expanded edition of his work, Dr. Morales reiterates his important message that Sanatana Dharma must by understood and practiced only in its most original, unaltered, and authentic form if it is to survive and thrive into the future as the world's most important and relevant spiritual tradition. This crucially important book philosophically positions Sanatana Dharma to become the most eminent and influential force for positive global change that the world has ever known. Even if you feel that you already know that Hinduism truly teaches, be prepared to challenge your understanding with this revolutionary and thought-provoking work of historical significance. Dr. Frank Morales, Ph.D., a practicing Hindu for over 33 years and with a Ph.D. in Language and Cultures of Asia, Dr. Frank Morales is currently recognized as one of America's leading authorities on Hinduism, meditation, and yoga spirituality. He is the Resident Acharya of the Hindu Temple of Nebraska, the first American in history to be honored with such a position. Printed Pages: 80. 111303
