Population Ageing in India
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 1107073324; Hardcover; New; New;
A major emerging demographic issue of the twenty-first century is the ageing of populations as an inevitable consequence of the demographic transition experienced by most countries. While all countries are experiencing growing proportions of the elderly developing countries are currently ageing faster than developed countries. Population Ageing in India creates a holistic research base by looking at the demographics of the ageing population and reviewing existing studies. It delves deep into the socioeconomic layers of elderly health work participation and contribution to income generation national policy in practice and policy initiatives to ensure elderly wellbeing in other Asian countries. The shift of age composition to an older age structure has important implications for individuals society as well as the country. Therefore there is a need to promote harmony between development and demographic change by increasing the economic and social sources of support for the elderly.Printed Pages: 252. 101485

The Madhavanidana (with 'Madhukosa' the Commentary By Vijayaraksita and Srikanthadatta) (Chapters 1-10)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120833309; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The work presents earliest and most important compendium on the section of Indian medicine that is traditionally called nidana, the Rogaviniscaya by Madhava, usually referred to as Madhavanidana. Though the first work of this type to appear in the field of Sanskrit medical literature, it has remained a classic up to modern times. Madhava set the diseases should be described. In this he definitely improved upon the earlier samhitas, in which a restricted number of diseases is dealt with in the section. Collecting his material from the samhitas, for the greater part at least, and selecting what was appropriate to the nature of his work and its scope, he organized the whole in a new way. Madhava clearly met with success as reflected in the compendia written by subsequent authors. The text of a Sanskrit medical treatise is not clear in many instances and may be interpreted in a number of ways. The commentaries are indispensable for a correct understanding of the way in which difficult passages were explained according to tradition. The text of the most important commentary on the Madhavanidana, the Madhukosa, is presented here in English translation. Printed Pages: 709. 029304

Untouchable Spring
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125039457; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In the Kings and Untouchables, the author presents the field work done on the vankar, a caste of untouchable weavers in Gujarat. The ethnographic data, collected over two visits spanning over four years,has led her to a re-evaluation of the traditional approach that focussed on the singualrity and also the rigidity of the caste in Indian Society. Louis Dumont's Homo Hierarchicus has had a significant impact on anthropological theory. Rosa Perez confronts this western perception of untouchablity of with the notion of reversibility, and a fresh translation of social norms. Printed Pages: 252. 032730

The Impact of Ramanuja`s Teaching on Life and Conditions in Society
Sundeep Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 1990; 8185067465; Hardcover; New; New;
This work entitled The Impact of Ramanuja`s teaching on life and conditions In society is an attempt to study Sri Ramanuja`s teachings and their impact on various aspects of social life in India not only during his life time but also on the present life. Many works have been written on rl Ramanuja with a view to analyse his philosophy. But the application of philosophy to social life and the measure of success achieved by Ramanuja have not l-eceived sufficient attention from the scholars. The present work tries to fill that gap in the social history of south India. The emphasis is an R&manuja as a social reformer and socialist philospher. This work claims to be an historical work and as such has tried to analyse the relevancy of Sri Ramanuja`s teachings to Socio-Economic, Cultural and administrative fields. Sri Ramanuja was not a revolutionary. He was no doubt revolutionary in the context of the times he lived and without rejecting the tradition, he tried to accomodate suitable changes wherever necessary for the integrated growth of the society. He made a sincere attempt to conserve the long established tradition and made it meaningful to our existence. Sri Ramanuja in one sense he termed as a `Socialist-philosopher who based his concept of the distribution of material things in socio-economic life on the firm faith in God. It is not a Godless Socialism of the present day society but a God based socialism appealing to each and every one. Integration of society was his concern, rather than disrupting the existing system and replacing it by a new one. In this sense he advocated evolutionary development of man and society. This is the thrust of the present work. Preface 1. Introduction 2. Ramanuja?s Education and Acade mic Adventure 3. Rajanuja?s Attitude Towards Society and Its Behaviour 4. Ramanuja?s Interest in Society and Its Well-Being 5. Ramanuja and the Economic Field 6. Rananuja and the Social Field 7. Ramanuja-The Culture-based Socialist 8. Ramanuja and the Administrative Field 9. Ramanuja and the Doctrine of Service 10. Ramanuja?s Legacy 11. Conclusion Printed Pages: 263. 112759

Surgical Instruments of Ancient Hindus (Second Edition)
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8187418206; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In describing the Surgical Instruments of Ancient Hindus. I have confined myself strictly to the texts of the authors and commentators whom I have quoted, and have given the original Sanskrit passages in the foot-notes, These will be of great help to scholars who will try to study the subject at first hand, and prosecute further historical inquires. The references in "the foot-notes" do not refer to pages of any particulars edition of the work, as such pagination causes inconvenience to the readers who may not secure the edition in question; so, we have given the section, and chapter of the Book which will be found in any edition.I have endeavoured to discuss briefly their approximate age. But as I have compared the surgical instru-ments of the ancient Hindus with those of the Greeks, Romans and Arabs, a concise summary of the chronological dates of the Greeco-roman, Arab, and the later authors would be a great help in the proper elucidation of my text.To complete the subject, I have added plates of nearly all the varieties of instruments; but they are more or less hypothetical as we do not possess any actual specimens of the instrument of the Hindus. Written descriptions of surgical instruments are uninteresting and often fail to convey the true idea, which could be easily made evident by the pencil. For purpose of comparison I have given drawings of instruments of the greeks, the Romans and the Arabs, when I thought that they might be of value for the proper elucidation of my subject.Printed Pages: 315 with 80 pages of Plates. 104098

Economics: A Primer for India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125046321; Softcover; New;
Economics: A Primer for India is tailor-made for foundation courses in undergraduate programmes. Its pedagogic standpoint is based on two convictions. First, a foundation course need not invoke formal economic theory which is a contested terrain, especially at the present time. Second, such a course should be grounded on the empirical reality of the economy in which students live. Through an intuitive approach that combines concepts with history, accounting and data, the primer allows the reader to discover economic processes and institutions. The economic structure of society as three inter-dependent systems, namely production, markets and money, is brought to relief. The process of economic growth as change in this structure will then be evident, as also the critical role of policy in guiding growth. Basic concepts and measures are explained with data from original sources.Printed Pages: 296. 101814

Critical Mass to Critical Actions: A Study of the Process of Empowerment
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121213266; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is the outcome of a major research project conducted in rural Tamil Nadu with the support of the Indian Council for Social Science Research on the conditions of the elected women representatives and their performance in the rural local bodies, specifically on the critical developmental issues. The whole research investigation was undertaken in the backdrop of the empowerment framework developed by Ruth Alsop. By using a well constructed interview schedule, data have been collected from the respondents (Elected Women Representatives). The data, thus collected, have been analysed by using appropriate statistical tools. From the analysis one could infer the conditions of the elected women representatives, state of affairs at the institutions of local governance and the problems faced by the elected women representatives. Further, it brings to light the major achievement they have made in their new found responsibility. In the obtaining scenario, this study attempts to capture and highlight the gap between the existing capacity and expected capacity of the elected women representatives in the discharge of the duties and responsibilities assigned them. The task is tough and difficult as the rural communities are strongly rooted in caste structure and community practices. It highlights the necessary changes to be introduced in the administrative system at the grassroots to enable the decentralization to work, since the very purpose of creating lower level institutions for governance is the inadequacy of representative democracy to solve the problems in India. Based on the report of the Second Administrative Reform Commission, areas where attention is needed for strengthening local Goverments in India are clearly dealt with. Also the inclusion of vulnerable and marginalized in governance and development is emphasized. This book will be useful for policy-makers, researchers and academicians working in the area of Decentralized Governance. Printed Pages: 263. 112488

Integral Rural Development: A Rural Transfornmation Experiment by Sri Aurobindo Society, Puducherry
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351251101; Hardcover; New; New;
SARVAM (Sri Aurobindo Rural & Village Action & Movement), the rural development unit of Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry has put into practice an innovative concept in rural development which we call 'Integral Rural Development'. It fascinates development professionals for two reasons. One, it provides a spiritual perspective to rural development practice. In other words, the approach aims at bringing about rural development that is human-spirit centric, rather than narrowing it down to the conventional economic senses. The second reason is SARVAM has actually implemented the concept of integral rural development on the ground in Tamil Nadu. It is not just a concept on paper or in mind. What rural transformation has taken place through this innovative approach to rural development is what this book is about. It also explains for the benefit of those who want to emulate this model, the process adopted and the principles that emerge. In fact, it might be considered as a new frontier in rural development practice, pushing the edges of development literature to newer horizons. Printed Pages: 134. 112088

Globalization and Rural Development
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8180697509; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is a field-based study conducted in various districts of Tamil Nadu. Village Panchayats and NGOs were also actively in this research endeavour, and during validation of the findings. The research viewed things from the standpoint of the poor, the women, and the elected local bodies (viz. the Panchayats). The main frame of reference was whether the reform measures introduced as part of LPG policies benefits or hurts the poor; and what does it boil down to ultimately. The book is primarily aimed at researchers, PG students of development studies/development economics and development management in various universities, and policy makers involved in reforms and globalization. After globalization, almost all the Universities in India have started incorporating globalization, and reform measures in their curriculum especially at masters level. But, they do not have sufficiently researched materials to discuss in the classroom about reform initiatives and their operations at the grassroots in India or in a given State. This book fills that gap. Both researchers and students of rural development and development administration would find this book interesting and useful. Printed Pages: 307. 112516

Studies of Buddhism
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2006; 8180900703; Hardcover; New; New;
This compendium on study of Buddhism was earlier published on the great and auspicious occasion on of the twenty-fifth century celebrations organised in the honour of Lord Buddha not only by our grateful nation but also by the world at large. The contributions of Buddhism are varied in the domains of language and literature, art and archi-tecture and moral and social ideas throughout the whole world. The Buddha`s teachings inference the religious culture of half of the humanity. It is all due to the fact that the Buddhism moves very easily from one culture to another because its emphasis is on internal practice rather than external forms of religious behaviour. Its emphasis is on the way each practitioner develops his or her mind not on how he dresses, the kind of food he eats, the ways he bears his hair and so forth. This volume is most interactive and highly educatives informative one and I hope that it will be very useful and popular among scholars, students and readers who are intrested in Buddhism. Rituals and Practices of Tantra
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Tantras have many common characteristics. They all accept the Veda and are in no way hostile to the six Darsanas. Their purpose is to provide a way for the salvation of man during the present age (Kali Yuga). Their principles are of universal application without regard to time or place, temperament or capacity, as is witnessed by the many religious sects that have received inspiration from their teachings. They maintain that mere philosophical speculation on the ultimate nature of things is not enough to satisfy the spiritual hunger of the soul, no more than a description of a banquet is sufficient to satisfy the physical hunger of the body. Therefore, they provide not only the principles of speculation, but also the basis for experience; they not only argue, but they experiment. They provide a rational foundation for the spiritual exercises that will liberate man during one lifetime. These practices are referred to as Sàdhana, derived from the root sàdh, “to succeed,” that is, that success which leads to final emancipation of the soul. Their philosophy furnishes the reasons required to make the mind firm in its faith so that it will not despair in the early stages when all seems so hopeless. Other philosophies offer a theoretical explanation of the ultimate nature of reality which brings peace of mind, but the Tantras provide a basis; for the actual absorption of the essence of man into the essence of Reality. Throughout their structure, the emphasis is placed on the practical aspect of knowledge. The Tantras are aware of the fact that the world of name and form with its sorrow and suffering cannot be dissolved by logic alone. They teach that only by growth and development can the obstacles of life be surmounted. They accept the world around us as it is, exalting everything, discarding nothing, relegating everything to its rightful place, and providing a spiritual prescription for an orderly life according to the Laws of Nature. The ultimate aim of this treatise, as of all Tantric knowledge is to suggest means for emancipation of the personal soul from the bondage of senses.Printed Pages: 700. 100660

'Arunopanisat' is nothing but a group of Mantras belonging to the initial sections of the Taittiriya Aranyaka. This Upanisat is considered to be the most important one in the Srividya tradition.This Upanisat deserves in all respects to be ranked with all the principal Upanisats. Arunopanisat Arunopanisat which is 2500 years old contains many significant spiritual, social and national ideas which are particularly relevant to the present day world. Arunopanisat is available with a brief commentary 'traditionally ascribed to Laksmidhara of the 15th Century A.D., who has also written excellent commentaries on Saundarya Lahari and Subhagodaya which are two highly respected texts of the Srividya tradition.Arunopanisat is perhaps the first and the only Upanisat to address all spiritual-loving human beings of the world as 'the Bharatas' and to strongly advocate national integrity and communal harmony.Printed Pages: 192. 102135

The Panchasiddhantika: The Astronomical Work of Varahamihira
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2002; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The lamentable state of the text as appearing in the two original manuscripts (of Varah Mihira) at the disposal of the authors, was a lesser problem then the greater disadvantage under which they laboured with the absence of a commentary. Commentaries can be hardly done without in the case of any Sanskrit astronomical work; much less so, when the text, as that of the Panchasiddhantika, describes many mathematical processes more or less diverging from those commonly employed. Commentaries probably existed formerly, and possibly exist even now; but the authors failed to procure any. The commentary published in the present volume is an entirely original composition by M.S. Dvivedi. A mere translation of the text with notes would, indeed, have sufficed for the European reader; the authors, however, wished to make the results of their labour accessible to Pandits also who understand no English. And a full tika giving full demonstrations in the ordinary Hindu style will, in many cases, be useful to the European student also. The right hand columns of the text give the emended text: the left hands columns the text of the better one of our two manuscripts, which the authors thought advisable to exhibit in extense. Some remarks on the manuscripts and the mode of emendation of the text will be found at the end of the introduction.Printed Pages: 407. 100654

Dwindling and scarce energy resources in India have deprived electricity connectivity to 23 percent of 5, 86,000 villages and 56 percent of 138 million households in India. Difficult, remote locations and inaccessible terrain have compounded to the issue making it a Herculean task for various governments to extend electricity distribution networks to habitations and bring such scattered population into the ambit of electrification. Traditionally women in agriculture are confined to activities mainly Weeders, Preparation of agriculture fields, Application of green & farmyard manure, Crop management, Planting, Harvesting and Post-harvest operations. Onset of liberalisation opened avenues for women’s participation in agricultural labour force giving rise to Feminization of Agriculture and increase in rural female work participation rate. Consequent impact has been the creation of women entrepreneurs known as WOMEN AGRI- ENTREPRENEURS. Today they comprise about 10 percent of total entrepreneurs in India and 51% in Forest-based small-scale enterprises playing a key role to transform rural livelihoods. They also face many challenges like mushrooming multinational companies, patriarchy, illiteracy, dependency on male members, economically not self-dependent, dependency on intermediaries, marketing, sales and non cooperation of financial institutions. This book provides a platform for women entrepreneurs to share their experiences, discern role of technology in promoting employment & empowerment and debate on initiatives made by government in promoting Agripreneurship in women.Printed Pages: 292. 106110

Bidar: Its History and Monuments
Oxford University Press; London, UK; 1947; First Edition; Hardbound; Very Good; Very Good; 19 x 25 Cm
The town of Bidar, some eighty miles from Hyderabad, flourished as the capital f the Baihmani kings during a hundred years from about the middle of the fifteenth century. It afterwards experienced sundry vicissitudes, and fell into complete decay in the later part of the nineteenth century, its once beautiful palaces and public buildings, formerly the envy of the great cities of India, becoming a neglected mass of debris. Dr Yazdani, who visited Bidar for the first time in 1915, drew up a comprehensive programme for the thorough repair and conservation of the monuments at Bidar, and the work has been carried out through the enlightened policy of the Nizam's Government by whose authority the present magnificently illustrated record has been made available. It surveys the physical features, history, and architecture of Bidar in Chapters I-III and thereafter treats in detail of the numerous historical monuments, which include rare masterpieces of architecture and ornament in the palace buildings, temples, mosques, and tombs. A Tibetan on Tibet
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8173050368; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present volume contains a copious account of Tibet presenting a glimpse of its people, their religion; manner and customs; traditions and beliefs. The book stands out from the rest as it is one of the very few books reflecting the viewpoint of a Tibetan on his motherland. Described in a way that makes the best possible substitute for actual travel, the study abounds in cultural, archaeological, social and anthropological data of this mystic land. A Tibetan on Tibet should appeal not only to the theologian and the sociologist, but to "the man in the street", who will find a remarkable human document in the book. For the first time one gets an inside account of the manner and customs of the Tibetans and the nomad tribes, and in the concluding chapter one is initiated into the meaning and significance of the famous Devil Dance. The book, thus reproduces, the Tibetan atmosphere with simple fidelity and charm. Printed Pages: 232. 100285

Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales (Folklore Fellows Communications 303)
Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia (Academia Scientiarum Fennica)/Bookstore Tiedekirja; Helsinki, Finland; 2012; 9514110897; New;
The Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales comprises an epitome in the English language of the ‘Greek Catalogue of Magic Tales’ published originally in five volumes in the Greek language. The collected texts cover a period of more than a century of recordings (from the second half of the nineteenth century up to the mid-1970s) and geographically cover not only the entire Greek territory and Cyprus but also other areas where Greek populations live(d) and Greek cultures thrive(d) (Asia Minor, Pontus, Cappadocia, Southern Italy). It was Georgios A. Megas, the eminent folklorist, who drafted the first (unpublished) catalogue, gathering and indexing all published and unpublished Greek folktale versions, so that the number of texts finally exceeded 23?000. A group of specialists continued for nearly 30 years carrying this project, consulting, classifying, and commenting G. Megas’ handwritten card indexes, and finally editing this rich material, scattered in public and private archives.May this Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales, in its English edition, serve as a useful tool for future comparative research.The editing team presenting the Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales comprises G. A. Megas (1889–1976), Professor of Folklore in the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens and member of the Academy of Athens; Anna Angelopoulos, PhD in Social Anthropology (EHESS), Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle; Aigli Brouskou, Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the American College of Thessaloniki; Marianthi Kaplanoglou, Assistant Professor of Folklore Studies in the Department of Philology in the University of Athens; and Emmanouela Katrinaki, philologist, PhD in Social Anthropology (EHESS).
