Late Temple Architecture of India: Continuities, Revivals, Appropriations, and Innovations
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0199454671; Hardcover; New; New;
From the fifteenth century on, after a period of widespread destruction and demolition, India witnessed a resumption of temple patronage and building activity. These 'late' temples, however, are usually overlooked by architectural and art historians, who tend to privilege the earlier phases of Indian architecture and art, the prevailing assumption being that India's 'late' temples are unworthy of serious attention. As illustrated in this volume, nothing could be further from the truth.Accompanied by maps, photographs, as well as a selection of building plans, this book is the first wide-ranging account of temple architecture in the 500-year period that coincides with the rule of the sultanates, the Mughals, and the British. Through a meticulous study of over 300 temples from 17 geographical zones, this book shows that, as far as temple architecture is concerned, these years were remarkably creative and vibrant. CV Phonology: A Generative Theory of the Syllable
The MIT Press; Cambridge, Massachussets, USA; 1983; 0262030985; First Edition; Hard Cover; Very Good; Very Good; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This work introduces a new approach to syllable representation. It proposes an additional level of phonological representation, the CV-tier; which defines functional positions within the syllable. The first three chapters provide an explanation of and support far this new approach from a typologically varied selection of languages, including English, Turkish, Finnish, French, Spanish, and Danish. The last two chapters are devoted to an in-depth application of the theory of Klamath, showing that a radical simplification of the phonological rules of that language is made possible in terms of this new framework. The book constitutes the first full-scale phonological justification for the CV-tier. George N. Clements is Associate Professor in the Linguistics Department at Cornell University and co-author, along with Morris Halle, of the recent MIT Press/ Bradford Books publication, Problem Book in Phonology. Samuel Jay Keyser is Head of the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT and editor of the Linguistic Inquiry Monograph Series. Samuel Jay Keyser is the Peter de Florez Professor Emeritus in Linguistics and Special Assistant to the Chancellor at MIT. Printed Pages: 208. 005369

10122 George N. Roerich with a Preface By Louis Marin
Trails to Inmost Asia: Five Years of Exploration with the Roerich Central Asian Expedition
Book Faith India; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8173030324; Reprint; Paperback; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Inner Asia, with its towering mountain ranges and seemingly unending deserts and steppes, has always been an endless lure to the explorer and traveller. This work compiles invaluable records and a mine of information collected by the remarkable expedition conducted for five years through the various countries of Central Asia. It opens for the scientific world new knowledge of the history and contemporary life of that region of the Roof of the world which is of deep interest geographically and sociologically. "From Tibet, Roerich brings back a scientific picture of the life and civilizations of the high plateau. The exclusive feature of Roerich's study is the strong arguments in justification of the theory concerning ancient civilization of the nomads whose territory extended from the Gobi desert and the border of Korea to the lower Danube and the Carpathian mountains. On the uplands of Tibet and in the country of the trans-Himalayas, the expedition carefully studied and photographed many hitherto unknown monuments. "Following in the footsteps of his famous mystic father, Nicholas, George Roerich has faithfully recorded his visits to the Buddhist monasteries which constitute an inestimable treasure for the study of the region. The pictorial record of land and peoples of the inner Asia and an extensive collection of ethnographical and linguistic material represents a fascinating contribution of the first order in the understanding of these lost civilizations. Animal Farm
Om Books International; New Delhi, India; 9789380070520; First Edition; Softcover; New;
George Orwell's timeless fable - a parable for would-be liberators everywhere, glimpsed through the lens of our own history As ferociously fresh as it was more than a half century ago, this remarkable allegory of a downtrodden society of overworked, mistreated animals, and their quest to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality is one of the most scathing satires ever published. As we witness the rise and bloody fall of the revolutionary animals, we begin to recognize the seeds of totalitarianism in the most idealistic organization; and in our most charismatic leaders, the souls of our cruelest oppressors.Printed Pages: 112. 105103

The End of Empires: African Americans and India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121512212; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Martin Luther King Jr.’s adaptation of Gandhi’s doctrine of nonviolent resistance is the most visible example of the rich history of ties between African Americans and India. In The End of Empires, Gerald Horne provides an unprecedented history of the relationship between African Americans and Indians in the period leading up to Indian independence in 1947. Recognizing their common history of exploitation, Horne writes, African Americans and Indians interacted frequently and eventually created alliances, which were advocated by W.E.B. Du Bois, among other leaders. Horne tells the fascinating story of these exchanges, including the South Asian influence on the Nation of Islam and the close friendship between Paul Robeson and India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Based on extensive archival research in India, the United States and the United Kingdom, The End of Empires breaks new ground in the effort to put African American history into a global context. Classical Samkhya: An Interpretation of Its History and Meaning
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120805038; Fifth Reprint; Softcover; New;
The tradition of Samkhya is one of the oldest and most influential in the intellectual history of India. The fundamental notions of Samkhya namely prakrti, purusa, buddhi, ahamkara, manas and the three gunas provided the conceptual framework in which much of Indian philosophizing occurred, and the classical formulations of Yoga and Vedanta together with many traditions of Buddhist philosophy and meditation developed vis-a-vis the intellectual perspective of the Samkhya. Similarly on a general cultural level the influence of Samkhya was profound and important over many centuries in such areas as law, medicine, ancient science and mathematics, logic, mythology, cosmology and ritual. This study traces the history of the Samkhya not only in the Indian intellectual tradition, but also in the traditions of historical criticism. The book also offers a new interpretation of the philosophical significance of the Samkhya, with special reference to the classical interpretation of the interaction of prakrti and purusa.Printed Pages: 332. 102138

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120803116; Third Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
Samkhya is one of India's oldest philosophical systems, and this volume of the Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies, coedited by Gernald James Larson and Ram Shankar Bhattacharya, and under the general editorship of Karl H. Potter, traces the history of the system from its beginnings in the third or fourth century B.C.E. up through the twentieth century. The volume includes a lengthy Introduction (written by G.J. Larsen) which discusses the history of the system and its philosophical contours overall. The remainder of the volume includes summaries in English of all extant Sanskrit texts of the Samkhya system. Many of the summaries are of texts that have never been edited, translated of studied before, most notably extensive treatments of the Yuktidipika, the Samkhyavrtti and the Samkhyasaptativrtti. The volume is designed for philosophers, cultural historians and students of comparative studies generally. This book gives a detailed analysis of architectural designs found in Indian temples built in Karnataka in the period 1000-1300 AD, and a view on the architectural features common in all sophisticated temples built in medieval India. Calukya Architecture: Medieval temples of northern Karnataka built during the rule of the Calukya of Kalyana and thereafter, AD 1000-1300, 3 Vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121510708; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
This three-volume book gives a complete survey of the surviving Hindu and Jaina temples in the northern half of Karnataka from the period AD 1000-1300. These temples form a homogenous body of monuments that is one of the most interesting in India. From an architectural point of view it is most interesting of all, because an important characteristic of Indian temples-is taken to its limits. Nowhere else in India, or for that matter in the entire world, the decoration of architecture with architecture is so abundant and so detailed. The ambition to be complete required a lot of fieldwork, because about 50 of the 220 monuments included have not been published before. But not only ‘new’ temples were visited; without exception all temples presented in this book were seen at least once. During each visit many photographs were made. All of the approximately 1400 photographs published in the second and third volumes were made by the author. In addition to their scholarly value, the present volumes are very valuable for any layman with interest in architecture. This is because the monuments of the period are so extremely interesting for their sophisticated play with architectural elements, and because the photographs are so carefully taken and so instructive. With regard to photographs this book easily surpasses all others on old Indian temples. Printed Pages: 857 with 203 figures, 184 plates and 15 maps. 023652
