Asian Irrigation in Transition: Responding to Challenges
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0761933506; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 5.5 x 8.5 Inches
There is today a crucial need to revamp the management and governance of water systems in Asia in order to cater to the increasing demands of a growing group of users with diverse needs—urban settlements, industry, food producers and environmental needs. Written by a mix of international observers and practitioners, these essays cover a wide range of issues that are involved in this endeavor. Based on actual fieldwork in various Asian countries, the contributors collectively address three major themes: - The response to the competition for resources including groundwater and aquifers, multiple water use, water reclamation, and watershed and basin management. - The emergence of new partnerships and institutional reforms, such as the changing role of governments, participatory approaches, new accountability mechanisms and improving the infrastructure. - The economic productivity of irrigated agriculture through water users` associations, demand-oriented and pro-poor irrigation services, and agribusiness. Drawing vital lessons from the Asian experience, this important volume will greatly assist in the design of efficient and equitable water management systems as well as serve to outline an agenda for future research for practitioners and policymakers. Ruskin, Our Enduring Bond
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363394; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 5.78 x 7.8 Inches Ruskin Bond and Ganesh Saili Collections, Front Cover--Victor Banerjee
Ruskin, Our Enduring Bond is the story of a charmed childhood spent in ‘old towering palaces! Full of mystery and romance.’ At the age of ten, Ruskin Bond lost his father, but by then Ruskin’s father had already passed on to his little son, his love for old friends, old times, old manners, old books and old music. Ruskin was only seventeen when he first started writing to be published in 1951. Even as his first novel The Room on the Roof was being published in England, he returned ‘home’ to India in 1955. After a few years of wandering in the plains, he scampered up the foothills north of Dehra, and has spent the last forty years in Landour and Mussoorie, living close to nature, amongst good friends and those he loves. And this is where Ruskin—the icon of the mountains and its unsung tales—has written many of his finest stories, essays, poems, novels and verse. Printed Pages: 144. 031453

Kama Sutra: Feminine Pleasures
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8174364404; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 9.5 x 6.5 Inches
Female sexuality has always intrigued and fascinated people through the ages. Vatsyayana’s Kama Sutra, a bookmark in the ancient Indian classical works on the Art of Love, remains an outstanding tribute to the golden age of Indian liberalism when sexual pleasure was divested of guilt and gender biases. In fact, Vatsyayana highlighted the important role it played in the life of a man and a woman, basing himself on the rare alchemy of responsibility and sensuousness. Kama Sutra -- Feminine Pleasure treats the subject of female sexuality with rare insight. It revisits Vatsyayana’s masterpiece to underscore the relevance of its liberal approach to feminine sexuality; to reiterate the need to recognize the role played by women in society, and above all to uphold the right of women to celebrate their sexuality in myriad forms. Encyclopaedia of the Hindu World, 3 Vols
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1991; 8170223733; Hardcover; New; New;
The number of paths to the One Infinite is necessarily infinite, according to Hinduism, it is this recognition of many paths, each valid in itself, that gives to Hinduism its immense variety. Hinduism is thus like a huge river with an innumerable tributaries. It Contains within it the influence of many cultures. The culture of the Aryans, Dravidian and the tribal peoples, the culture of the later invaders, the influence of Buddhism, Jainism , etc. (to which Hinduism gave birth ) and of Islam and Christianity (which came from outside) can be traced at various stages of the evolution of Hindu thought. The Hindu scheme of life thus leaves a man free to think for himself while providing him with a background in the form of a long tradition halling from the Vedic times. Many people would prefer to be guided by a flexible schemes of life which Hinduism represents, than by a seat of rigid, unalterable dogmas which lose their importance with the passing of time, Moreover, Hinduism is a Continuous process and is still in the making Printed Pages: 941. 112064

The Tattvasangraha of Shantaraksita: With the commentary of Kamalashila, 2 Vols
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8120800583; Hardcover; New; New;
The Tattvasangraha or 'Compendium of True Doctrines', as Dr. Jha translates the term, throws a flood of light on the Buddhist metaphysics, logic and epistemology. A remarkable feature of the work is that it reproduces the views of scholars who would otherwise have remained in perfect oblivion. The commentator Kamalasila gives the names of such authors and quotes from them. The work shows the philosophical activities and speculations of nearly three centuries from the time of Dharmakirti down to Uddyotakara. The Tattvasangraha studied along with Uddyotakara's Nyayavartika and Kumarila's Slokavartika gives a good picture of the cultural movements of the centuries. The Buddhist attack on the realism sponsored by Nyaya, particularly the refutation of the soul theories which had created a great commotion in the orthodox circles, and the Buddhist criticism of the infallibility of the Vedas which too had given a big jolt, provoked spirited counter-attacks from the orthodox thinkers and a vigorous defence of the faith which succeeded in undermining the prestige of the Buddhist Church. However, the Buddhist also reacted with vigour and the Tattvasangraha pre-eminently represents this phase of the Buddhist reaction.Printed Pages: 1593. 102416

Yoga-Sara-Samgraha of Vijnanbhiksu (Sanskrit Text with English Translation)
Parimal Publications/Chaukhambha Publications; New Delhi, India; 2004; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Yogasarasamgraha is an original work of Vijnanabhiksu. It is in the form of collected theories of Yogasutras or Yoga treatise. When deities and demons had churned the ocean. they used Sumeru mountain as the churning rod in the process. From that churning, nectar came out and lord Visnu kept it in a jar Likewise, Vijnanabhiksu has accepted Yoga as an ocean and the commentary Yogavarttika as the churning rod. He kept the originating of nector (subject-matter), which resulted from the process of rumination and study in the shape of a Book (Yogasarasamgraha) As If it were in a jar. The verse quoted indicates that in order to obtain the thorough knowledge of Yoga-sutras and the bhasya on them Vijnanabhiksu wrote a commentary named Yogavarttika. On the basis of (hat very commentary, the essence of Yoga has been collected, which is known by the name of Yogasarasamgraha.The present work is a revised edition of earlier one. This contains Sanskrit Text and English translation by a learned scholar, Pt. Ganganath Jha. This study embodies the essence of Yoga-vartika by Vyasabhasya Which is a commentary to the Yogasutras of Patanjali. The sutras that were systematically presented by Patanjali have-again been elucidated by Vijnanabhiksu in this study in a language and style that is easily understandable. A number of extracts that has been quoted here from Smrti, Sruti, and Puranas reveal the depth of knowledge in Vijnanbhiksu.Printed Pages: 151. 100615

Green Growth: Ideology, Political Economy and the Alternatives
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789350024768; Softcover; New;
The discourse of ‘green growth’ has recently gained ground in environmental governance deliberations and policy proposals. It is presented as a fresh and innovative agenda centred on the deployment of engineering sophistication, managerial acumen and market mechanisms to redress the environmental and social derelictions of the existing development model. But the green growth project is deeply inadequate, whether assessed against criteria of social justice or the achievement of sustainable economic life upon a materially finite planet. This volume outlines three main lines of critique. First, it traces the development of the green growth discourse quaideology. It asks: what explains modern society’s investment in it, why has it emerged as a master concept in the contemporary conjuncture, and what social forces does it serve? Second, it unpicks and explains the contradictions within a series of prominent green growth projects. Finally, it weighs up the merits and demerits of alternative strategies and policies, asking the vital question: ‘if not green growth, then what?’ Gareth Dale teaches politics at Brunel University. His publications include books on Karl Polanyi, the GDR and Eastern Europe, and international migration. Manu V. Mathai is assistant professor in the School of Development at Azim Premji University. He received his PhD in energy and environmental policy from the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy at the University of Delaware. He researches and teaches about the intersection of energy, environment and human development. Jose A. Puppim de Oliveira teaches at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV-EAESP and FGV-EBAPE) as well as the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPEAD-UFRJ) and Fudan University, Shanghai. He is also a visiting research fellow at United Nations University (UNU-IIGH), Kuala Lumpur. He was assistant director and senior research fellow at the United Nations University (UNU-IAS) from August 2009 to 2015. His academic interests are in the political economy of sustainable development, particularly in patterns of environmental governance and in the implementation of global policies at the local level. The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 1999; 1570624763; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Tibetans accord The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa a classic status comparable to that of the Mahabharata and the Bible, and revere its author as probably the best single exemplar of the religious life. Milarepa was an eleventh-century Buddhist poet and saint, a cotton-clad yogi who avoided the scholarly institutions of his time and wandered from village to village, teaching enlightenment and the path to Buddhahood through his spontaneously composed songs. Wherever he went, crowds of people gathered to hear his sweet sounding voice "singing the Dharma." The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa , says the book's translator, "has been read as the biography of a saint, a guide book for devotions, a manual of Buddhist yoga, a volume of songs and poems, and even a collection of Tibetan folklore, and fairy tales." With titles like "The Salvation of the Dead," "A Woman's Role in the Dharma," and "Challenge from a Wise Demoness," Milrepa's poems are filled with fascinating tales of miraculous encounters and colorful imagery, and present a valuable insight into the living quality of Tibetan Buddhism. Central as this book is to Tibetan culture, the arcane dialect and obscurity of many original passages daunted translators for centuries; this was the first complete version of the classic to appear in the West. Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8190428543; Hardcover; New; New;
The next president of the United States faces innumerable complex problems, from a possible prolonged recession to climate change. An immediate difficulty for the president will be the global conflict between the West and Islamic jihadists and state sponsors of terrorism. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission notwithstanding, the administration needs to be armed and ready to tackle much more in the areas of intelligence and counterterrorism. The president can and must assume a hands-on, informed leadership role if the United States wants to make progress in the war on terror.Gary Berntsen has written this book as a guide for an incoming president and White House staff so that they may master current human intelligence and counterterrorism operations. After reading its highly specific recommendations and policy prescriptions, the president and his or her staff will be able to draft a First Directive for the leadership of the intelligence and national security communities outlining how the administration wants those communities to proceed and to defend the nation’s interests.Human Intelligence, Counterterrorism, and National Leadership will be of interest to legislators, policymakers, and anyone concerned about intelligence and terrorism policy. The Four Seasons of Marriage
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184951019; Softcover; New;
Marriages are in a perpetual state of transition, continually moving from one season to another perhaps not annually, as in nature, but just as certainly and consistently. Sometimes we find ourselves in winter: distant, discouraged and dissatisfied; other times, we experience springtime: a time of hope, filled with openness and anticipation. On other occasions, we bask in the warmth of summer: satisfied and comfortable, simply enjoying life together. And, in times of fall, negligence and uncertainty creep in, leaving us feeling unsettled and apprehensive.The cycle repeats itself many times throughout the life of a marriage, just as the seasons repeat themselves in nature. Each season presents its own unique challenges, and each holds the potential for emotional health and happiness. The purpose of this book is to help you and your spouse identify which season you are currently in, give you a common language with which to discuss it, and provide practical strategies that will help you strengthen and enhance your marriage.Printed Pages: 236 with CD. 105317

The Blood Telegram : India's Secret War in East Pakistan
Random House India; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8184003706; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
In 1971, the Pakistani army launched an devastating crackdown on what was then East Pakistan (todays independent Bangladesh), killing thousands of people and sending ten million refugees fleeing into India. The events also sparked the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. Drawing on recently declassified documents, unheard White House tapes and meticulous investigative reporting, Gary Bass gives us an unprecedented chronicle of the break-up of Pakistan and Indias role in it. This is the path-breaking account of Indias real motives, the build-up to the war and the secret decisions taken by Indira Gandhi and her closest advisers. This book is also the story of how two of the worlds great democracies - India and the United States - dealt with one of the most terrible humanitarian crises of the twentieth century. Gary Bass writes a revealing account of how the Bangladeshis became collateral damage in the great game being played by America and China, with Pakistan as the unlikely power broker. The United States embrace of the military dictatorship in Islamabad would affect geopolitics for decades, beginning a pattern of American anti-democratic engagement in Pakistan that went back far beyond General Musharraf. The Blood Telegram is a revelatory and compelling work, essential reading for anyone interested in the recent history of our region. Printed Pages: 368. 037686

iMuslims: Rewriting the House of Islam
Hurst & Company; London, UK; 1850659516; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 145 x 225 Mm
The internet has profoundly shaped how Muslims perceive Islam, and how Islamic societies and networks are evolving within the twenty-first century. While these electronic interfaces appear new and innovative in terms of how the media is applied, much of their content has a basis in classical Islamic concepts, with an historical resonance that can be traced back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad. i-Muslims explores how these transformations and influences play out in diverse cyber Islamic environments, and how they are responding to shifts in technology and society. The author discusses how, in some contexts, the application of the internet has had an overarching transformational effect on how Muslims practise Islam, how forms of Islam are represented to the wider world, and how Muslim societies perceive themselves and their peers. Cyber Islamic environments have exposed Muslims to radical and new influences beyond the traditional spheres of knowledge and authority, including through social networking sites and the blogosphere. Gary Bunt also explores how the internet has dramatically influenced jihad-oriented campaigns by networks such as al-Qaeda, and how it has revolutionized the propagation of new forms of Islamic activism and radicalization. He concludes by determining the way forward for the articulation of diverse understandings of Islam online, and how Muslim networks will be further shaped through their relationships with the internet. Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8121502101; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
What is the extent of Greek influence on the Art, Culture and Civilisation of Ancient India? To this basic question that concerns the very history of our land, there are two diverse answers, extremely opposed to each other. There is one school, mainly consisting of European scholars, that asserts that everything Indian has been, in its early beginnings, influenced by our contacts with Greece. There is the other patriotic achool that refutes this theory and upholds the absolute independence of Indian thought and culture. The author, one of the few eminent historians which India has ever produced, has approached this question objectively and analysed the slight yet stimulating influence of Greece on Indian thought and culture in all its manifold aspects, since the time of Alexander's invasion. The book is of such importance that no student of Indian History or Culture can claim his study to be complete without it. Printed Pages: 284. 033669

Vedic Elements in Puranic Mantras and Rituals
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 2000; 8170815134; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book presents a comparative study of some Vedic elements such as deities, mantra-s, rituals, myths etc., reflected in the Purana-s. Purana-s, the literature of the masses, attempt at the re-statement of the meaning of the Veda-s in their own style. In doing so, they resort to additions, omissions, simplifications and modifications; yet the main stream is never lost sight of Well considered arrangement of the chapters and two appendices, giving a bird's eye-view of the position of the Vedic mantra-s in the Purana-s, special features of the book. It is hoped that this seminal work, presenting a comparative angle, would be of great help to those interested in such studies.Printed Pages: 404. 103945

Introduction to Tantra, 2 Vols
Cosmo Publisher; New Delhi, India; 2001; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Some years ago. Professor Cowell wrote, "the Tantras from a branch of literature highly esteemed though at present much neglected". The Tantra Sastra. together with its accompanying oral tradition, is the voluminous source of the greater part of The Hindu ritual, Hathayoga, and the various forms of spiritual training which pass under the generic term "Sadhana."In fact, both popular and esoteric Hinduism is. in its practical aspects. largely Tantrik. Recently an increased interest has been shown in the Hindu beliefs and traditions. Hitherto, however, attention has chiefly directed to those great Vedantik principles, which, subsumed, to a greater or less degree, in the beliefs and practices of all the Hindu sects are yet. in their conscious realization, the very end only of the highest spiritual effort. Little has been done to present the practical application of those principals in the particular form which they assume in the various divisions, methods, and rituals of the Indian worshippers. This side of practice, though neglected, has booth intrinsic value and helps to a clearer and deeper understanding of the general principles than can be gathered from any bare theoretical statement of them. The knowledge of hymn, and legend, of worship and sadhana, will alone give that full knowledge of the Hindu spirit without which its religious and philosophical nceptions are likely to be but poorly understood. The present development of upasana (worship) and sadhana can only be learnt from the Tantra, the Mantra and Sadhana Sastra. The text guides the reader towards a greater understanding of the secrets, expalining various important and key facets, in language simple enough for a genaral reader to understand the mysteries of Tantra and clear enough for a student to provoke him into further research on the subject.
