Integral Rural Development: A Rural Transfornmation Experiment by Sri Aurobindo Society, Puducherry
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351251101; Hardcover; New; New;
SARVAM (Sri Aurobindo Rural & Village Action & Movement), the rural development unit of Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry has put into practice an innovative concept in rural development which we call 'Integral Rural Development'. It fascinates development professionals for two reasons. One, it provides a spiritual perspective to rural development practice. In other words, the approach aims at bringing about rural development that is human-spirit centric, rather than narrowing it down to the conventional economic senses. The second reason is SARVAM has actually implemented the concept of integral rural development on the ground in Tamil Nadu. It is not just a concept on paper or in mind. What rural transformation has taken place through this innovative approach to rural development is what this book is about. It also explains for the benefit of those who want to emulate this model, the process adopted and the principles that emerge. In fact, it might be considered as a new frontier in rural development practice, pushing the edges of development literature to newer horizons. Printed Pages: 134. 112088

Globalization and Rural Development
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8180697509; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is a field-based study conducted in various districts of Tamil Nadu. Village Panchayats and NGOs were also actively in this research endeavour, and during validation of the findings. The research viewed things from the standpoint of the poor, the women, and the elected local bodies (viz. the Panchayats). The main frame of reference was whether the reform measures introduced as part of LPG policies benefits or hurts the poor; and what does it boil down to ultimately. The book is primarily aimed at researchers, PG students of development studies/development economics and development management in various universities, and policy makers involved in reforms and globalization. After globalization, almost all the Universities in India have started incorporating globalization, and reform measures in their curriculum especially at masters level. But, they do not have sufficiently researched materials to discuss in the classroom about reform initiatives and their operations at the grassroots in India or in a given State. This book fills that gap. Both researchers and students of rural development and development administration would find this book interesting and useful. Printed Pages: 307. 112516

Studies of Buddhism
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2006; 8180900703; Hardcover; New; New;
This compendium on study of Buddhism was earlier published on the great and auspicious occasion on of the twenty-fifth century celebrations organised in the honour of Lord Buddha not only by our grateful nation but also by the world at large. The contributions of Buddhism are varied in the domains of language and literature, art and archi-tecture and moral and social ideas throughout the whole world. The Buddha`s teachings inference the religious culture of half of the humanity. It is all due to the fact that the Buddhism moves very easily from one culture to another because its emphasis is on internal practice rather than external forms of religious behaviour. Its emphasis is on the way each practitioner develops his or her mind not on how he dresses, the kind of food he eats, the ways he bears his hair and so forth. This volume is most interactive and highly educatives informative one and I hope that it will be very useful and popular among scholars, students and readers who are intrested in Buddhism. The wholesome efforts by the different writers will be instrumental in creating interest and generating appreciation and encouragement for spreading over Buddhism in India and western countries in line of the eastern and southern countries of the world. Rituals and Practices of Tantra
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Tantras have many common characteristics. They all accept the Veda and are in no way hostile to the six Darsanas. Their purpose is to provide a way for the salvation of man during the present age (Kali Yuga). Their principles are of universal application without regard to time or place, temperament or capacity, as is witnessed by the many religious sects that have received inspiration from their teachings. They maintain that mere philosophical speculation on the ultimate nature of things is not enough to satisfy the spiritual hunger of the soul, no more than a description of a banquet is sufficient to satisfy the physical hunger of the body. Therefore, they provide not only the principles of speculation, but also the basis for experience; they not only argue, but they experiment. They provide a rational foundation for the spiritual exercises that will liberate man during one lifetime. These practices are referred to as Sàdhana, derived from the root sàdh, “to succeed,” that is, that success which leads to final emancipation of the soul. Their philosophy furnishes the reasons required to make the mind firm in its faith so that it will not despair in the early stages when all seems so hopeless. Other philosophies offer a theoretical explanation of the ultimate nature of reality which brings peace of mind, but the Tantras provide a basis; for the actual absorption of the essence of man into the essence of Reality. Throughout their structure, the emphasis is placed on the practical aspect of knowledge. The Tantras are aware of the fact that the world of name and form with its sorrow and suffering cannot be dissolved by logic alone. They teach that only by growth and development can the obstacles of life be surmounted. They accept the world around us as it is, exalting everything, discarding nothing, relegating everything to its rightful place, and providing a spiritual prescription for an orderly life according to the Laws of Nature. The ultimate aim of this treatise, as of all Tantric knowledge is to suggest means for emancipation of the personal soul from the bondage of senses.Printed Pages: 700. 100660

The Panchasiddhantika: The Astronomical Work of Varahamihira
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2002; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The lamentable state of the text as appearing in the two original manuscripts (of Varah Mihira) at the disposal of the authors, was a lesser problem then the greater disadvantage under which they laboured with the absence of a commentary. Commentaries can be hardly done without in the case of any Sanskrit astronomical work; much less so, when the text, as that of the Panchasiddhantika, describes many mathematical processes more or less diverging from those commonly employed. Commentaries probably existed formerly, and possibly exist even now; but the authors failed to procure any. The commentary published in the present volume is an entirely original composition by M.S. Dvivedi. A mere translation of the text with notes would, indeed, have sufficed for the European reader; the authors, however, wished to make the results of their labour accessible to Pandits also who understand no English. And a full tika giving full demonstrations in the ordinary Hindu style will, in many cases, be useful to the European student also. The right hand columns of the text give the emended text: the left hands columns the text of the better one of our two manuscripts, which the authors thought advisable to exhibit in extense. Some remarks on the manuscripts and the mode of emendation of the text will be found at the end of the introduction.Printed Pages: 407. 100654

Traditionally women in agriculture are confined to activities mainly Weeders, Preparation of agriculture fields, Application of green & farmyard manure, Crop management, Planting, Harvesting and Post-harvest operations. Onset of liberalisation opened avenues for women’s participation in agricultural labour force giving rise to Feminization of Agriculture and increase in rural female work participation rate. Consequent impact has been the creation of women entrepreneurs known as WOMEN AGRI- ENTREPRENEURS. Today they comprise about 10 percent of total entrepreneurs in India and 51% in Forest-based small-scale enterprises playing a key role to transform rural livelihoods. They also face many challenges like mushrooming multinational companies, patriarchy, illiteracy, dependency on male members, economically not self-dependent, dependency on intermediaries, marketing, sales and non cooperation of financial institutions. This book provides a platform for women entrepreneurs to share their experiences, discern role of technology in promoting employment & empowerment and debate on initiatives made by government in promoting Agripreneurship in women.Printed Pages: 292. 106110

Bidar: Its History and Monuments
Oxford University Press; London, UK; 1947; First Edition; Hardbound; Very Good; Very Good; 19 x 25 Cm
The town of Bidar, some eighty miles from Hyderabad, flourished as the capital f the Baihmani kings during a hundred years from about the middle of the fifteenth century. It afterwards experienced sundry vicissitudes, and fell into complete decay in the later part of the nineteenth century, its once beautiful palaces and public buildings, formerly the envy of the great cities of India, becoming a neglected mass of debris. Dr Yazdani, who visited Bidar for the first time in 1915, drew up a comprehensive programme for the thorough repair and conservation of the monuments at Bidar, and the work has been carried out through the enlightened policy of the Nizam's Government by whose authority the present magnificently illustrated record has been made available. It surveys the physical features, history, and architecture of Bidar in Chapters I-III and thereafter treats in detail of the numerous historical monuments, which include rare masterpieces of architecture and ornament in the palace buildings, temples, mosques, and tombs. A Tibetan on Tibet
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8173050368; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present volume contains a copious account of Tibet presenting a glimpse of its people, their religion; manner and customs; traditions and beliefs. The book stands out from the rest as it is one of the very few books reflecting the viewpoint of a Tibetan on his motherland. Described in a way that makes the best possible substitute for actual travel, the study abounds in cultural, archaeological, social and anthropological data of this mystic land. A Tibetan on Tibet should appeal not only to the theologian and the sociologist, but to "the man in the street", who will find a remarkable human document in the book. For the first time one gets an inside account of the manner and customs of the Tibetans and the nomad tribes, and in the concluding chapter one is initiated into the meaning and significance of the famous Devil Dance. The book, thus reproduces, the Tibetan atmosphere with simple fidelity and charm. Printed Pages: 232. 100285

Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales (Folklore Fellows Communications 303)
Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia (Academia Scientiarum Fennica)/Bookstore Tiedekirja; Helsinki, Finland; 2012; 9514110897; New;
The Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales comprises an epitome in the English language of the ‘Greek Catalogue of Magic Tales’ published originally in five volumes in the Greek language. The collected texts cover a period of more than a century of recordings (from the second half of the nineteenth century up to the mid-1970s) and geographically cover not only the entire Greek territory and Cyprus but also other areas where Greek populations live(d) and Greek cultures thrive(d) (Asia Minor, Pontus, Cappadocia, Southern Italy). It was Georgios A. Megas, the eminent folklorist, who drafted the first (unpublished) catalogue, gathering and indexing all published and unpublished Greek folktale versions, so that the number of texts finally exceeded 23?000. A group of specialists continued for nearly 30 years carrying this project, consulting, classifying, and commenting G. Megas’ handwritten card indexes, and finally editing this rich material, scattered in public and private archives.May this Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales, in its English edition, serve as a useful tool for future comparative research.The editing team presenting the Catalogue of Greek Magic Folktales comprises G. A. Megas (1889–1976), Professor of Folklore in the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens and member of the Academy of Athens; Anna Angelopoulos, PhD in Social Anthropology (EHESS), Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle; Aigli Brouskou, Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the American College of Thessaloniki; Marianthi Kaplanoglou, Assistant Professor of Folklore Studies in the Department of Philology in the University of Athens; and Emmanouela Katrinaki, philologist, PhD in Social Anthropology (EHESS). Humanisation of the World Religions
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8187746033; Hardcover; New; New;
Here, we have presented a number of research papers of eminent scholars emphasizing on theoretical conception and practical implication of humanistic approach in world religions. Acceptance of the oneness of mankind is the first fundamental prerequisite for reorganization of the world religions. Humanism is a continual effort on the part of man to redeem himself as a creature of rich potentiality-an endeavour that is directed towards making man in its most comprehensive sense. In all phases of historical development, humanism has had to reckon with forces of factors that have been subversive of its characteristic thrust towards the betterment of the human condition. The present title ?Religious Asceticism? is an in-depth study of different asceticism in psycho-spiritual perspective. It is commonly practiced by different religions all over the world. It examines in depth the facets of asceticism in different religion and is dealt specially with Oriental and Western asceticism. The first part of this book deals with Oriental asceticism while the second part deals with Western asceticism. The popular conception of asceticism has grown up in connection with the experience of it linked with a distinct attitude towards life. Akbar and Rise of the Mughal Empire
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8175364343; Softcover; New;
The book contains biography, the conquest and administration of one of the prominent Indian emperors like Akbar of the Mughal dynasty.<-p>Babar was the founder of the Mughal dynasty in India, he transmitted to his successor only the idea of the mere conqueror. Certainly Humayun inherited only that idea, and associating it with no other, lost what his father had won. It is true that he ultimately regained, a portion of it, but still as a mere conqueror. It was the grandson who struck into the soil the roots which took a firm hold of it, sprung up, and bore rich and abundant fruit in the happiness and contentment of the conquered races.<-p>The first aim of Akbar was to bring all India under one sceptre and to accomplish this task in a great measure by enlisting in its favour the several races which he desired to bring within the fold. Not only was he methodical, but there ran through his method a most earnest desire to think and of what was right in itself and conducive to the great aim of his life, the building of an edifice which, rooted in the peoples, hearts, would be independent of the personality of the ruler.<-p>Akbar`s great idea was the union of all India under one head. A union of beliefs he recognised at a very early stage as impossible. The union therefore must be a union of interests. To accomplish such a union it was necessary, first, to conquer; secondly, to respect all consciences and all methods of worshipping the Almighty.<-p>The book `Akbar and the Rise of the Mughal Empire` was originally written by Colonel G.B. Malleson, C.S.I. and subsequently edited by William Wilson Hunter under the title of Rulers of India (Akbar). Printed Pages: 204 with 1 map. 107314

Wool: Dyeing Finishing and Blends
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502540; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This book is result of the experiences of working in the textile industry in India, beginning as Head of Department at the young age of 25. Since there were only a few woollen mills in India, facing the production difficulties, without having had sufficient exposure to the textile industry in India was a major challenge. This prompted the author to collect processing details from all kinds available literature, booklets, notes from teachers and professors, and compile them for the reference to counter and solve the problems of production. This book contains the names and nomenclature of old dyes which are not in production these days. The dyers and students are advised to consult the Colour Index for suitable substitutes for correct remedial actions in their shop floor production. The finishing of woollen and worsted materials was compiled first and later the part of dyeing has been added. This is a useful reference book for dyers and an excellent guide for woollen and worsted finishers. The last pages of the book give the names of dyes manufacturers and their comparative strength for proper practical guidance for the Dyeing Technologists who are engaged in the dyeing industries of wool and its blends. The book will be of great help to, and a guide for, the dyeing industries catering to carpet exports. A chapter has been added for dealing with dyeing defects and the methods of their removal for the benefit of dyers of the industry.Printed Pages: 300. 104386

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8187586001; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
Volume I Part I: History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization. The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognise the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers whore are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. This first volume is a new adventure in the historiography of Indian civilization. It avoids the ethnic and West-centred bias which has been a legacy of colonial historiography. It seeks strict scientific objectivity, differing from all hitherto existing volumes of this kind by giving due attention to science and philosophy in the history of Indian civilization. The contributions are based on the first-hand and critical study of the original sources by the best known experts. While meticulously attending to chronology and hard data, the volume also seeks to understand scientific and philosophical concepts, methods and theories. It seeks to present the symbolic world of art and culture as grounded in moral vision as well as social reality. The work is designed to be of use to scholars and specially to students and general readers. The volume is divided into six sections: Historiography; Geography and Ethnography; Prehistory, Technology and Social Evolution; Proto-History; The Vedas, Vedic Society and Ideas; and Foundations and Beginnings of Systematic Science. Jainism (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization, Volume VII, Part 10)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8187586605; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOSPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. Inspite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. The historical, conceptual, theological and the social ethos of Indian culture come alive in the vast spectrum of themes related to the origins and development of Jainism, one of the oldest living religions of the world. Eminent contributors to this volume explore the immensity of the Jaina scriptures, literature and art, to open up a vast store-house of knowledge. The socio-anthropological and metaphysical conceptualism of various philosophical theories and their development in the context of the evolution of human society, are analyzed in depth. The teachings of a galaxy of Teerthankaras culminating with Mahavira, have contributed immensely to the essence of Indian culture - freedom of thought, belief and expression, tolerance and non-violence (Ahimsa), that is the backbone of Jaina philosophy. The work is divided into three sections: part I: HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY AND LITERATURE; Part II: EPISTEMOLOGY AND MYSTICISM and Part III: CULTURAL CONTRIBUTION. Together these offer to readers, researches and scholars much food for further exploration of the mystique, that is Jainism. Printed Pages: 611. 037695

A Golden Chain of Civilizations: Indic, Iranic, Semitic and Hellenic (from C. 600 BC to C. AD 600) (Section 2: Science, Philosophy and Culture) (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization: Vol. I, Part 5)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8187586567; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India’s heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognize the difference between the areas of material civilizations and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called ‘methodological pluralism’. In spite of its primarily historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. The current accounts of the history of civilization do not generally appear to give adequate importance to non-western civilizations. Works like Needham’s Science and Civilization in China are rare. The accounts of Indic civilization on the other hand have either neglected the factor of civilizational contacts or represented them in an inadequate manner. Few serious attempts have been made to gain an insight into human civilization in all its aspects through the comparative historical and integrated studies. Historical research necessarily tied to the study of the source material is still in the process of rising to the level of universal history. Volume I, The Dawn and Development of Indian Civilization comprise six parts. Parts 4 and 5 are intended to review the history of science, philosophy and culture in Indian civilization in the context of civilizational contacts with the Iranic, Semitic and Hellenic worlds and comparable developments in them. Appropriately entitled A Golden Chain of Civilizations, Part 4 covers the period upto c.600 BC. Part 5 covers the period from c.600 BC to AD 600 in two sections-Sections 1: Cultural Contacts and Movements, and Section 2: Science, Philosophy and Culture. Printed Pages: 841. 037191

The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOSPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India’s heritage and present them in an interrelated way. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is marked by what may be called ‘methodological pluralism’. Inspite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. Buddhism can truly be called a universal religion. Like a kaleidoscope one can glean different spiritual structures in it. For some the rationalist and agnostic aspects of the early Pali Buddhism is important, others are inspired by the Mahayana texts and the Japanese tradition. Buddhism is to be valued for its idealistic, transcendental even non-dual tendencies. Still for some others the existential tendency and phenomenology seem significant in Buddhism. The study of Buddhist logic as preserved in Tibet and Mongolia also led to the appreciation of Buddhist philosophy as logic and epistemology with a strong ‘Kantian’ bias. The contribution of Buddhism went a long way in creating the essence of Indian culture, universal in its teachings. The catholic and rational message of Buddhism made it a dynamic and expansive world religion. What seems an anti-essentialist philosophy to the modern man actually shows different levels of spiritual experiences culminating in niruana. The study of Buddhism has attracted a host of scholars in India and abroad in all disciplines, e.g. History, Philosophy, Religion, Language, Literature and the Arts since ancient times. The present volume covers all the aspects of Buddhism by distinguished scholars. The topics range from archaeology and the date of the Buddha to contemporary Buddhism. The intricacies of the original Gospel, Hinayana, Mahayana, Buddhist monasticism and art, and Buddhism in relation to contemporary issues have been dealt with thoroughly. Printed Pages: 875. 037463

Hindu Law of Inheritance: As in Viramitrodaya of Mitramisra
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121200164; Softcover; New;
The institutes of various sages, as embodied in the Dharmasastra, which form the primary source of the Hindu law, treat Law in the widest Sense of the term. In these institutes, no distinction was drawn between Positive law on the one Hand and Laws of morality and Religion on the other. But the distinction appeared gradually, some traces of it can be found in the institutes of Yajnavalkya, which devote a separate chapter, called Vyavahara, to the positive law. This Authority is held in the highest esteem by the Hindu lawyers. The Mitaksara of Vijnanesvara, which gives a systematic exposition of the law and is held to be the highest authority in almost all schools, professes to be but a Commentary on Yajnavalkya. The most important part, the Vyavahara, as in Yajnavalkya and Mitaksara, comprises the sections on the law of inheritance and succession. The gradual development of the Hindu law, which was originally moulded by the institution of family, consisted of the Recognition of individual rights and in the introduction of cognates as heirs in preference to more distant agnates.The Viramitrodaya, composed by Mitramisra (17th cent.) is a well known treatise (nibandha) and has always been regarded as an authority of considerable Importance by the High Courts and Legal experts in British India. It presents in a very systematic way the Views of Yajnavalkya and Mitaksara and upholds their opinions, particularly of the latter against critics like Jimutavahana. It also gives a satisfactory exposition of which may have been left doubtful by the Mitaksara.The Section on Vyavahara or litigation of the Viramitrodaya is divided into four parts, the third of which describes eighteen Topics of litigations, one of these topics being law of inheritance and succession, called Vibhaga or Dayabhaga, i.e. partition of inheritance.The present volume contains the text of the Vibhaga portion of the Viramitrodaya with an English translation by a versatile scholar and famous practising Advocate of the Calcutta High Court in the late nineteenth century. The publication will prove to be of great Research value for the Study of the evolution of Hindu law of inheritance and some of the Hindu social problems.Printed Pages: 301. 105633
