10402 Gabriel Garcia Marquez
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Harper Collins India/TBI; New Delhi, India; 0062380443; Hardcover; New; New;
One of the twentieth century’s most beloved and acclaimed novels, available in a special limited slip-cased edition. In 1967, One Hundred Years of Solitude launched Gabriel García Márquez to international fame, and cemented his reputation as a literary legend. A central figure in the Latin Boom, García Márquez was the most celebrated practitioner of the literary style that has become known as magic realism, and in 1982, received the highest literary achievement: the Nobel Prize for Literature.Chilean poet and Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda called One Hundred Years of Solitude, “the greatest revelation in the Spanish language since Don Quixote of Cervantes.” In the New York Times legendary critic John Leonard proclaimed, “with a single bound, Gabriel García Márquez leaps onto the stage with Günter Grass and Vladimir Nabokov.” And writer William Kennedy has hailed García Márquez’s masterpiece as, “the first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race. Mr. García Márquez has done nothing less than to create in the reader a sense of all that is profound, meaningful, and meaningless in life.”Over four decades after its publication, One Hundred Years of Solitude remains one of the most beloved and venerated books in world literature. A rich and brilliant chronicle of life and death, it tells the story of the mythical town of Macondo through the lives of seven generations of the doomed Buendía family. In the noble, ridiculous, beautiful, and tawdry story of the Buendías, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude interweaves the political, personal, and spiritual, bringing a new consciousness to storytelling; this radiant work is no less than an accounting of the history of the human race.This special edition is a re-designed jacketed hardcover featuring colored endpapers in a beautiful, elegant slipcase. 112958

Understanding Caste: From Buddha to Ambedkar and Beyond (Second Edition)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125045732; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
Understanding Caste approaches the historical issue of caste and anti-caste movements from a position of insightful inquiry and rigorous scholarship. Critiquing the sensibility which equates Indian tradition with Hinduism, and Hinduism with Brahmanism—which considers the Vedas as the foundational texts of Indian culture and discovers within the Aryan heritage the essence of Indian civilisation—it shows how even secular minds remain imprisoned within the Brahmanical vision. And so it looks at the alternative traditions nurtured within dalit movements, which have questioned this way of looking at Indian society and history. Written in a lucid and readable style, the author elucidates how dalit politics and the dalit vision require going beyond even the term ‘dalit’ and how it has contributed to being symbolic of the most oppressed and exploited sections within the graded hierarchies of caste. Alongside the ascendance of Hinduism, the book traces the invasive trends of resistance and revolt in the tenets of Buddhism and radical bhakti, in the anti-patriarchal stands of early feminists, in the pervasive radicalism of the dalit activists—from Phule and Periyar, Ramabai and Tarabai, to Kabir, Tukaram and Ambedkar, even for that matter Buddha himself.Printed Pages: 140. 101803

Mrtyu: Concept of Death in Indian Traditions (Transformation of the Body and Funeral Rites), (Second Revised Edition)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8124603324; Second Revised Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Yama, in Hindu mythology, is the eschatologist and god of death. And is, thus, dreaded. Even in today's India, there is a fearful hesitancy, if not conscious avoidance, of any talk about him. Yet, paradoxically, the phenomenon of death does not evoke a similar fear in the Indian psyche -- accepted, as it is, a natural event, a part of life: just like poverty, sickness and old age. Here is an insightful, at once compelling exposition of the phenomenon of death, based on plurimillennial tradition of the Hindus -- which, despite the affirmation of Western attitudes in certain elitist sections of the urban society, has endured since the times of the Vedas and Indic Civilization. Exploring, contextually, the age-old Indian view of mortal existence: from the very moment of an individual's conception to his/her journey to the Kingdom of Yama -- through the major phases of birth, growth and ageing, Professor Filippi unveils a complex network of sentiments, beliefs, scriptural references, customs, hopes, ritualistic practices and much else -- relevant to the 'great adventure' of death. Notwithstanding the sentimental undertones of the mrtyu-theme, Dr. Filippi's work outstands for its rare scientific objectivity. It has grown from years of his rigorous research effort involving not only his extensive studies of Indian literature: classical as well as modern, but also his interviews with Indian samnyasins, brahmanas, relatives of the dead, and the persons living around the cremation grounds. Together with visual material, bibliographic references, and a glossary of non-English terms, the book holds out as much appeal to the general reader as to the specialist. Asian Irrigation in Transition: Responding to Challenges
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0761933506; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 5.5 x 8.5 Inches
There is today a crucial need to revamp the management and governance of water systems in Asia in order to cater to the increasing demands of a growing group of users with diverse needs—urban settlements, industry, food producers and environmental needs. Written by a mix of international observers and practitioners, these essays cover a wide range of issues that are involved in this endeavor. Based on actual fieldwork in various Asian countries, the contributors collectively address three major themes: - The response to the competition for resources including groundwater and aquifers, multiple water use, water reclamation, and watershed and basin management. - The emergence of new partnerships and institutional reforms, such as the changing role of governments, participatory approaches, new accountability mechanisms and improving the infrastructure. - The economic productivity of irrigated agriculture through water users` associations, demand-oriented and pro-poor irrigation services, and agribusiness. Drawing vital lessons from the Asian experience, this important volume will greatly assist in the design of efficient and equitable water management systems as well as serve to outline an agenda for future research for practitioners and policymakers. Ruskin, Our Enduring Bond
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363394; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 5.78 x 7.8 Inches Ruskin Bond and Ganesh Saili Collections, Front Cover--Victor Banerjee
Ruskin, Our Enduring Bond is the story of a charmed childhood spent in ‘old towering palaces! Full of mystery and romance.’ At the age of ten, Ruskin Bond lost his father, but by then Ruskin’s father had already passed on to his little son, his love for old friends, old times, old manners, old books and old music. Ruskin was only seventeen when he first started writing to be published in 1951. Even as his first novel The Room on the Roof was being published in England, he returned ‘home’ to India in 1955. After a few years of wandering in the plains, he scampered up the foothills north of Dehra, and has spent the last forty years in Landour and Mussoorie, living close to nature, amongst good friends and those he loves. And this is where Ruskin—the icon of the mountains and its unsung tales—has written many of his finest stories, essays, poems, novels and verse. Printed Pages: 144. 031453

Kama Sutra: Feminine Pleasures
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8174364404; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 9.5 x 6.5 Inches
Female sexuality has always intrigued and fascinated people through the ages. Vatsyayana’s Kama Sutra, a bookmark in the ancient Indian classical works on the Art of Love, remains an outstanding tribute to the golden age of Indian liberalism when sexual pleasure was divested of guilt and gender biases. In fact, Vatsyayana highlighted the important role it played in the life of a man and a woman, basing himself on the rare alchemy of responsibility and sensuousness. Kama Sutra -- Feminine Pleasure treats the subject of female sexuality with rare insight. It revisits Vatsyayana’s masterpiece to underscore the relevance of its liberal approach to feminine sexuality; to reiterate the need to recognize the role played by women in society, and above all to uphold the right of women to celebrate their sexuality in myriad forms. Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1991; 8170223733; Hardcover; New; New;
The number of paths to the One Infinite is necessarily infinite, according to Hinduism, it is this recognition of many paths, each valid in itself, that gives to Hinduism its immense variety. Hinduism is thus like a huge river with an innumerable tributaries. It Contains within it the influence of many cultures. The culture of the Aryans, Dravidian and the tribal peoples, the culture of the later invaders, the influence of Buddhism, Jainism , etc. (to which Hinduism gave birth ) and of Islam and Christianity (which came from outside) can be traced at various stages of the evolution of Hindu thought. The Hindu scheme of life thus leaves a man free to think for himself while providing him with a background in the form of a long tradition halling from the Vedic times. Many people would prefer to be guided by a flexible schemes of life which Hinduism represents, than by a seat of rigid, unalterable dogmas which lose their importance with the passing of time, Moreover, Hinduism is a Continuous process and is still in the making Printed Pages: 941. 112064

The Tattvasangraha of Shantaraksita: With the commentary of Kamalashila, 2 Vols
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8120800583; Hardcover; New; New;
The Tattvasangraha or 'Compendium of True Doctrines', as Dr. Jha translates the term, throws a flood of light on the Buddhist metaphysics, logic and epistemology. A remarkable feature of the work is that it reproduces the views of scholars who would otherwise have remained in perfect oblivion. The commentator Kamalasila gives the names of such authors and quotes from them. The work shows the philosophical activities and speculations of nearly three centuries from the time of Dharmakirti down to Uddyotakara. The Tattvasangraha studied along with Uddyotakara's Nyayavartika and Kumarila's Slokavartika gives a good picture of the cultural movements of the centuries. The Buddhist attack on the realism sponsored by Nyaya, particularly the refutation of the soul theories which had created a great commotion in the orthodox circles, and the Buddhist criticism of the infallibility of the Vedas which too had given a big jolt, provoked spirited counter-attacks from the orthodox thinkers and a vigorous defence of the faith which succeeded in undermining the prestige of the Buddhist Church. However, the Buddhist also reacted with vigour and the Tattvasangraha pre-eminently represents this phase of the Buddhist reaction.Printed Pages: 1593. 102416

Yoga-Sara-Samgraha of Vijnanbhiksu (Sanskrit Text with English Translation)
Parimal Publications/Chaukhambha Publications; New Delhi, India; 2004; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Yogasarasamgraha is an original work of Vijnanabhiksu. It is in the form of collected theories of Yogasutras or Yoga treatise. When deities and demons had churned the ocean. they used Sumeru mountain as the churning rod in the process. From that churning, nectar came out and lord Visnu kept it in a jar Likewise, Vijnanabhiksu has accepted Yoga as an ocean and the commentary Yogavarttika as the churning rod. He kept the originating of nector (subject-matter), which resulted from the process of rumination and study in the shape of a Book (Yogasarasamgraha) As If it were in a jar. The verse quoted indicates that in order to obtain the thorough knowledge of Yoga-sutras and the bhasya on them Vijnanabhiksu wrote a commentary named Yogavarttika. On the basis of (hat very commentary, the essence of Yoga has been collected, which is known by the name of Yogasarasamgraha.The present work is a revised edition of earlier one. This contains Sanskrit Text and English translation by a learned scholar, Pt. Ganganath Jha. This study embodies the essence of Yoga-vartika by Vyasabhasya Which is a commentary to the Yogasutras of Patanjali. The sutras that were systematically presented by Patanjali have-again been elucidated by Vijnanabhiksu in this study in a language and style that is easily understandable. A number of extracts that has been quoted here from Smrti, Sruti, and Puranas reveal the depth of knowledge in Vijnanbhiksu.Printed Pages: 151. 100615

Green Growth: Ideology, Political Economy and the Alternatives
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789350024768; Softcover; New;
The discourse of ‘green growth’ has recently gained ground in environmental governance deliberations and policy proposals. It is presented as a fresh and innovative agenda centred on the deployment of engineering sophistication, managerial acumen and market mechanisms to redress the environmental and social derelictions of the existing development model. But the green growth project is deeply inadequate, whether assessed against criteria of social justice or the achievement of sustainable economic life upon a materially finite planet. This volume outlines three main lines of critique. First, it traces the development of the green growth discourse quaideology. It asks: what explains modern society’s investment in it, why has it emerged as a master concept in the contemporary conjuncture, and what social forces does it serve? Second, it unpicks and explains the contradictions within a series of prominent green growth projects. Finally, it weighs up the merits and demerits of alternative strategies and policies, asking the vital question: ‘if not green growth, then what?’ Gareth Dale teaches politics at Brunel University. His publications include books on Karl Polanyi, the GDR and Eastern Europe, and international migration. Manu V. Mathai is assistant professor in the School of Development at Azim Premji University. He received his PhD in energy and environmental policy from the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy at the University of Delaware. He researches and teaches about the intersection of energy, environment and human development. Jose A. Puppim de Oliveira teaches at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV-EAESP and FGV-EBAPE) as well as the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPEAD-UFRJ) and Fudan University, Shanghai. He is also a visiting research fellow at United Nations University (UNU-IIGH), Kuala Lumpur. He was assistant director and senior research fellow at the United Nations University (UNU-IAS) from August 2009 to 2015. His academic interests are in the political economy of sustainable development, particularly in patterns of environmental governance and in the implementation of global policies at the local level. The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 1999; 1570624763; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Tibetans accord The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa a classic status comparable to that of the Mahabharata and the Bible, and revere its author as probably the best single exemplar of the religious life. Milarepa was an eleventh-century Buddhist poet and saint, a cotton-clad yogi who avoided the scholarly institutions of his time and wandered from village to village, teaching enlightenment and the path to Buddhahood through his spontaneously composed songs. Wherever he went, crowds of people gathered to hear his sweet sounding voice "singing the Dharma." The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa , says the book's translator, "has been read as the biography of a saint, a guide book for devotions, a manual of Buddhist yoga, a volume of songs and poems, and even a collection of Tibetan folklore, and fairy tales." With titles like "The Salvation of the Dead," "A Woman's Role in the Dharma," and "Challenge from a Wise Demoness," Milrepa's poems are filled with fascinating tales of miraculous encounters and colorful imagery, and present a valuable insight into the living quality of Tibetan Buddhism. Central as this book is to Tibetan culture, the arcane dialect and obscurity of many original passages daunted translators for centuries; this was the first complete version of the classic to appear in the West. The Four Seasons of Marriage
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184951019; Softcover; New;
Marriages are in a perpetual state of transition, continually moving from one season to another perhaps not annually, as in nature, but just as certainly and consistently. Sometimes we find ourselves in winter: distant, discouraged and dissatisfied; other times, we experience springtime: a time of hope, filled with openness and anticipation. On other occasions, we bask in the warmth of summer: satisfied and comfortable, simply enjoying life together. And, in times of fall, negligence and uncertainty creep in, leaving us feeling unsettled and apprehensive.The cycle repeats itself many times throughout the life of a marriage, just as the seasons repeat themselves in nature. Each season presents its own unique challenges, and each holds the potential for emotional health and happiness. The purpose of this book is to help you and your spouse identify which season you are currently in, give you a common language with which to discuss it, and provide practical strategies that will help you strengthen and enhance your marriage.Printed Pages: 236 with CD. 105317
