The Yoga Tradition: Its History, Literature, Philosophy and Practice
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8120819233; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Yoga Tradition - Its History, Literature, Philosophy and Practice is an authoritative treatment of the subject. The author has dedicated his life for the understanding and practice of Yoga and successfully established that Yoga is a systematic science; its teachings are an integral part of most religions, but Yoga itself is not a religion. Most religions teach what to do, but Yoga teaches how to be. Yet Yoga practices described in symbolic language, may be found in the sacred scriptures of most religions. Mystics of all religions have practiced Yoga in one form or another. The author has been able to make the reader believe that Yoga is not an esoteric Eastern philosophy, it is a practical, systematic, and scientific quest for perfection, as relevant today as it was in ancient times, as relevant in the West as it is in the East. A complete overview of the great Yogic traditions of; Raja-Yoga, Hatha-Yoga, Jnana-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, Karma-Yoga, Tantra-Yoga, Kundalini-Yoga, Mantra-Yoga and many other lesser known forms. Includes translations of over twenty famous Yoga treatises, like the Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali, and a first-time translation of the Goraksha Paddhati, and ancient Hatha Yoga text. This will certainly prove to be an authoritative reference encyclopaedia for all those who are keen to understand the history, concept, faith, philosophy and practical aspects of this science which have its roots deep into Indian soil.Printed Pages: 718. 102309

Languages of North-Eastern India: A Survey, 2 Volumes
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121200717; Hardcover; New; New;
India is rightly called the epitome of the world-which statement is true, apart from ether consideration, both Anthropologically and linguistically. As far as the languages are concerned, India is represented almost all the Famines of the world-Indo-European, Mongolian, Dravidian, Austric etc. This position is as well true even about North-Eastern India. This region, a small part of the Country as it is, abounds in languages belonging to quite a few Families and groups. As for example, one may find in this Region Assamese of the Indo-European family, Khasi of Mon-Khmer family, Ahom of the Chinese-Siamese family, Miri of the Tibeto-Burman family, etc.All these languages of the North-East, along with their various dialects had been surveyed by the consultants and associates of the illustrious linguist Dr. George Abraham Grierson and the Results of the surveys were systematically and scientifically recorded in his monumental work Linguistic Survey of India. The said work includes all known languages and dialects of India and is, therefore, too vast for a researcher interested in a particular region to handle and too expensive for any individual to acquire. Nevertheless, the culture, Sociology and languages of the North-East are gaining going Interest in India and abroad. Keeping these facts in view : These selections from Dr. Grierson's magnum opus have been compiled with a view to presenting a complete linguistic Picture of the region. Care has been taken so that all predominant famines and Groups are well represented, it is fervently hoped that the scholars interested in the Languages and culture of the North-East India will find this volume useful.Printed Pages: 712. 105954

The Art of the Plasterer
Donhead Publishing Ltd; Dorset, UK; 2002; 1873394519; Reprint; Hard Cover; Brand New; 22 Cms x 31 Cms
George Bankart first wrote The Art of the Plasterer in 1908, it was then re-issued, with amendments, a few years later. Now available from Donhead in this re-printed facsimile edition, this impressive, well illustrated volume offers an artistic interpretation of the way plaster was used in response to stylistic changes. Bankart was an architect inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement who cared passionately about the craft of plastering and sought to complement Millar’s earlier craftsmen’s book by producing a volume which traced the history and art of plastering throughout the United Kingdom. It explores in detail how plaster materials and methods were developed and used, giving a fascinating insight into some of the unusual substances added to plaster. For instance, he tells us that ancient stuccos sometimes contained fig juice, curdled milk, blood or beer to make them harder. The book also contains an account of wattle and dab as well as parge-work, using practical illustrated examples to give an excellent description and record of the subject. With over 400 illustrations, comprising black and white photographs and drawings of ceilings and the profiles of mouldings, this volume will be of value to craftsmen engaged in plasterwork, conservation professionals and all architects and architectural historians with an interest in this field. Contents: Introduction Ancient stucco-duro The stucco-duro of the Italian Renaissance Sgraffito or scratched ornament Stucco-duro in England Wattle and dab and parge-work The English school of plasterwork Scottish plasterwork Irish plasterwork English plasterwork of the later Renaissance The eighteenth-century degeneration The Adam brothers and their work Modern plasterwork: Part I: Present day methods – Part II: The teaching of the past: a comparison Index to text and illustrations Printed Pages: 368 with numerous illustrations. 016923

In the Brahma Sutras of Badarayana, we find what is perhaps the most influential work in the history of Hindu Theology, given that the Brahma Sutras served as the basis for the theologies of all major Hindu theologians, including Sankara, Ramanuja, Nimbarka,Vallabha, and Madhva. Indian Grammars: Philology and History
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120835557; Hardcover; New; New;
Vyakarana holds an uncontested place of honour in Indology, and Panini's grammar in particular is a basic source in argumentation not only among Paniniyas but also for students of Indian literature and sastras regardless of their particular areas of concentration. In this volume are published thirteen contributions presented in the Vyakarana section of the twelfth World Sanskrit Conference. The papers represent a considerable breadth of interest. Most of the studies concern technical aspects of Paninian grammar. Several papers deal with facets of Panini's metalinguistic usage and four studies with points concerning derivational procedures and particular sutras related to them. Two papers concentrate on questions of syntax and two other scholars treat subjects of primarily historical interest.Printed Pages: 280. 102080

D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606587; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
Sanskrit grammatical treatises, not only those of Panini and his successors but also work by Indian scholars representing other streams of grammatical thought, have long held the attention of modern scholars. The present volume contains a selection of the large number of papers presented in the Vyakarana Section of the 15th World Sanskrit Conference held in New Delhi, during 15-20 January 2012. The scope covered in these papers is wide. The first contribution deals with currents in European traditions of Sanskrit grammars, from early works by missionaries to modern Sanskrit grammars. As could be expected, however, Panini is the centre of attention for most authors, whose contributions nevertheless differ in focus. Several scholars deal with theoretical issues concerning the interpretation and application of Paninian sutras, including points of Sanskrit syntax. The question whether particles (nipata), and preverbs (upasarga) in particular, should be considered independently to signify particular meanings or instead be treated as terms which serve to cosignify meanings assigned to items with which they co-occur is the object of two studies. One paper treats in detail the relations which can be considered to hold between terms and the meanings they signify, with particular emphasis on what Bhartrihari has to say on this topic. A historically-oriented study deals with attacks on Paninian views by Mimamsakas of Prabhakara Naiyayikas. One scholar contrasts how particular nominal forms are derived in the Sarasvata system in contrast to the Paninian derivations of such forms. The final study in this collection brings us into the realm of modern Sanskrit literature, with a discussion of usage in the prose work Shivarajavijaya of Ambika Dutt Vyas. Fellow scholars should welcome and profit from the varied studies contained in this volume.Printed Pages: 362. 100493

The Black Legend of Portuguese India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8170220750; Hardcover; New; New;
George Winius, an American historian teaching in the Netherlands, first examines the contemporary testimony in its historical context and then asks the questions: what really was corruption in that age Can it be compared to what we consider corruption in our own time Was it the consequence of Portugal's failure to build a system of civilian government Or was it the result of the European patronage system transported to a location where there was plenty of extra money to be obtained Dr. Winius examines all these questions and attends to another two raised by his colleagues a Leiden University: Were the exposes written by men who resented their exclusion from the system? And was this system itself European or Indian in nature. Printed Pages: 123. 112190

Encyclopedia of Stress, 4 Vols.
Elsevier; New York, USA; 2007; 0120885034; Second Edition; Hardcover; New;
Like the first edition, the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Stress covers nearly every conceivable aspect and ramification of stress including a wide range of related topics such as neuroimmune interactions, cytokines, enzymatic disorders, effects on the cardiovascular system, immunity and inflammation, and physical illnesses. Over the last decade, scientists have presented convincing research showing that psychological stress increases vulnerability to disease. They now understand more clearly that stress may be the thread tying together illnesses that were previously believed to be unrelated. Bone loss, increased abdominal fat, and damaged memory cells in the hippocampus have been linked to elevated cortisol levels. Building on the success of the first edition, this completely revised work surveys the vast amount of research generated in the past five years, resulting in a substantial revision with over 30% new material and over 100 new entries. Expanded sections include Animal Studies, Anxiety and Depression, Drugs, Depression, Disasters, and Psychological and Other Therapies. Also available online via ScienceDirect (2007) – featuring extensive browsing, searching, and internal cross-referencing between articles in the work, plus dynamic linking to journal articles and abstract databases, making navigation flexible and easy. The Mind and its Education
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8174790853; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This books ia a study of mind and its education. It is easy to understand how we may investigate the great world of material things about us; for we can see it, touch it, or measure it. But how are we to discover the nature of mind, or come to know the processes by which consciousness works? For mind is intangible, we can not seet it, feel it or hand it. Mind belongs not to the realm of matter which is known to the senses, but to the realm of spirit, which the senses can never grasp. And yet the mind can be known and studied as truly and as scientifically as can the world of matter. The subject matter of this book is made concrete and practical by the use of several illustrations and through application to real problems. The style has been kept easy and familiar to facilitate the reading and hope that the book would be of interest and value to students of all ages and to the general public as well. Contents: The Mind, Or Consciousness/ Attention/ The Brain and Nervous System/ Mental Development and Motor Training/ Habit/ Sensation/ Perception/ Mental Images and Ideas/ Imagination/ Association/ Memory/ Thinking/ Instinct/ Feeling and its Functions/ The Emotions/ Interest/ The Will/ Self-Expression and Development/ Index. Whether he is dealing with seating at a party, scoring in a game of darts, or picking winners in a race, Summers constructs a perplexing mystery, the solution to which dangles just out of reach, waiting for the logical leap which brings the answer, and then, of course, you'll find a selection of straight murder mysteries - a victim, a perpetrator, some clues, and a perceptive puzzler to sort it out - that's you! If you're stuck, don't worry-there is a helpful Solution Scheme for every brainteaser (a feature that is unique to Summer's books) and detailed answers that show you step by step how each Teaser or Puzzler is unravelled.Printed Pages: 256. 105455

Late Temple Architecture of India: Continuities, Revivals, Appropriations, and Innovations
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0199454671; Hardcover; New; New;
From the fifteenth century on, after a period of widespread destruction and demolition, India witnessed a resumption of temple patronage and building activity. These 'late' temples, however, are usually overlooked by architectural and art historians, who tend to privilege the earlier phases of Indian architecture and art, the prevailing assumption being that India's 'late' temples are unworthy of serious attention. As illustrated in this volume, nothing could be further from the truth.Accompanied by maps, photographs, as well as a selection of building plans, this book is the first wide-ranging account of temple architecture in the 500-year period that coincides with the rule of the sultanates, the Mughals, and the British. Through a meticulous study of over 300 temples from 17 geographical zones, this book shows that, as far as temple architecture is concerned, these years were remarkably creative and vibrant. CV Phonology: A Generative Theory of the Syllable
The MIT Press; Cambridge, Massachussets, USA; 1983; 0262030985; First Edition; Hard Cover; Very Good; Very Good; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This work introduces a new approach to syllable representation. It proposes an additional level of phonological representation, the CV-tier; which defines functional positions within the syllable. The first three chapters provide an explanation of and support far this new approach from a typologically varied selection of languages, including English, Turkish, Finnish, French, Spanish, and Danish. The last two chapters are devoted to an in-depth application of the theory of Klamath, showing that a radical simplification of the phonological rules of that language is made possible in terms of this new framework. The book constitutes the first full-scale phonological justification for the CV-tier. George N. Clements is Associate Professor in the Linguistics Department at Cornell University and co-author, along with Morris Halle, of the recent MIT Press/ Bradford Books publication, Problem Book in Phonology. Samuel Jay Keyser is Head of the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT and editor of the Linguistic Inquiry Monograph Series. Samuel Jay Keyser is the Peter de Florez Professor Emeritus in Linguistics and Special Assistant to the Chancellor at MIT. Printed Pages: 208. 005369

The exclusive feature of Roerich's study is the strong arguments in justification of the theory concerning ancient civilization of the nomads whose territory extended from the Gobi desert and the border of Korea to the lower Danube and the Carpathian mountains. On the uplands of Tibet and in the country of the trans-Himalayas, the expedition carefully studied and photographed many hitherto unknown monuments. "Following in the footsteps of his famous mystic father, Nicholas, George Roerich has faithfully recorded his visits to the Buddhist monasteries which constitute an inestimable treasure for the study of the region. The pictorial record of land and peoples of the inner Asia and an extensive collection of ethnographical and linguistic material represents a fascinating contribution of the first order in the understanding of these lost civilizations. 10800 George Orwell
Animal Farm
Om Books International; New Delhi, India; 9789380070520; First Edition; Softcover; New;
George Orwell's timeless fable - a parable for would-be liberators everywhere, glimpsed through the lens of our own history As ferociously fresh as it was more than a half century ago, this remarkable allegory of a downtrodden society of overworked, mistreated animals, and their quest to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality is one of the most scathing satires ever published. As we witness the rise and bloody fall of the revolutionary animals, we begin to recognize the seeds of totalitarianism in the most idealistic organization; and in our most charismatic leaders, the souls of our cruelest oppressors.Printed Pages: 112. 105103
