Satish Gujral: An Artography
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8174364285; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 12 x 12 Inches
Satish Gujral: An Artography traces the aesthetic and personal journey of a pioneer of modern Indian art, over the last five decades. A true Renaissance artist, Satish Gujral defies categorization. Painter, sculptor, muralist, architect, interior designer and more, he has ventured beyond the conventional boundaries of individual art forms. A master of medium, he has painted in oil and acrylic, sculpted using wood, bronze and granite, made paper collages and ceramic murals, designed buildings in brick and stone, and left his mark in metal and glass, creating works that telescope the past with contemporary history, and represent a continuum between distinct art forms. A twenty-first century Da Vinci, Satish Gujral is forever in quest of a new theme. His early experiences with deafness, the horrors of Partition, nationalistic politics, the idealization of his elder brother, Inder Gujral, and his training in art, especially under Mexican muralist David Alfaro Sequeiros, have manifestly enriched and contributed to his evolution as an artist. While hope and exuberance remain common denominators of his art, he has never fought shy of expressing his sense of outrage at human degradation. Printed Pages: 276. 014661

Natural Wakefulness: Discovering the Wisdom We Were Born With
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 1590306570; Hardcover; New; New;
Wakefulness is our natural state: enlightened, complete, perfect in wisdom and compassion. It’s not something outside ourselves that we need to attain or become. But it’s also true that some effort is required to get in touch with it—and that effort is what spiritual practice is about. Gaylon Ferguson highlights two essential aspects of the path of awakening: learning to trust that we are already naturally awake and committing to meditation practice. And he shows how each supports the other in our efforts to become fully who we are.He begins by showing how to understand natural wakefulness in ourselves and how to gain confidence in it. Then he teaches the fundamentals of meditation and goes on to provide exercises and guided contemplations intended to help us experience innate wakefulness. Along the way, he shares selections from question-and-answer sessions with students from retreats that he's led that provide practical advice for manifesting awareness in daily life. Finally he shows how we can reinforce and support each other in wakefulness through community.This long-awaited first book from this renowned meditation teacher is a complete introduction to meditation and the spiritual path—suitable for both beginners and seasoned practitioners as a source of inspiration and insight. India-Pakistan War 1965
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649662; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The 1965 India-Pakistan War saw the Indian Armed Forces graduate from the tactical level of operations to the scale of Operational Art. Some 12 Divisions of the Indian Army and a little over half its Air Force saw live combat. The 1965 India- Pakistan War was a limited conflict, more in the tradition of what the Chinese call – local wars under high-tech conditions. Actually the limitations in this war had emerged, not so much from intent but capacity constraints. How relevant are the lessons of this war to the South Asian context today? Now we have a nuclear backdrop which imposes severe constraints on the level and extent of force usage and the time duration of the conflict. That is precisely why – the 1965 War model – with its shallow penetrations , and overall an attrition oriented design, has remarkable levels of relevance for any future war that may break out between India and Pakistan in the years ahead. In 1965, India had very deliberately sought to bring to battle and destroy/degrade the Pakistani Armoured division on Pakistani soil. That may well turn out to be the model for future India-Pakistan wars against a nuclear backdrop. It would not so much be to capture territory but to bring to battle and maul/destroy Pakistani military formations in battles of attrition that take place very close to the borders. The intent would be to specifically raise costs for the Pakistan. Hence, even though our military capacities have increased vastly since then, the nuclear backdrop imposes severe constraints on how much of our capacity we can use in the next war and how? The 1965 War offers surprisingly relevant models and lessons. Hence, the urgent need to study it in detail and trawl it for useful lessons. The strong point of this book is its attempt to provide an objective and balanced account that takes advantage of memoirs published by combatants on both sides. This war provided an excellent learning opportunity for our senior military leadership and set in train a historical process which culminated in a decisive defeat for Pakistan in the 1971 War.Printed Pages: 152. 105026

2014: Nationalism and National Security in India
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649679; First Edition; Softcover; New;
2014 was a critical year that saw the revival of Nationalism in India. This book examines Indian Nationalism and takes a close look at India’s National Security. It revisits the somber truth about our freedom struggle. This book uses the technique of Pattern Modelling to study India’s recent history and make forecasts about its collective future. Patterns tend to persist and repeat themselves cyclically. Hence, they become the basis for Heuristic forecasts about the future. This book, therefore, is in two parts. Part one takes an analytical look at our last 70-80 years to identify the patterns. Book two then uses this pattern analysis to make forecasts about our near term future in terms of a Net Assessment that uses the tools of Trends, Drivers and Discontinuities to create a set of Alternative Futures.Printed Pages: 318. 105027

The Rise of Indian Military Power : Evolution of an Indian Strategic Culture (Second Edition)
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649495; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
This is a monumental & epic work on India’s Military History. It seeks to answer the seminal question – ‘Is there an Indian Way of War-fighting and an Indian Strategic Culture?’ The author has traced the history of war-fighting in India from the Vedic & Mahabharatan period to the Mauryan & Mughal Eras and thereafter the British Period. It is a comprehensive audit of India’s combat performance in the ancient, medieval, modern and post-modern periods of Indian history. The focus of this work however, is on India’s Post-independence Military History. The author has analysed each of India’s wars with China & Pakistan as also its CI and CT campaigns in meticulous detail, to draw lessons for the future. The path-breaking contribution is the author’s thesis that there have been three local Revolutions in Military Affairs (RMAs) in India, which shaped the course & flow of her history. Each of these RMAs helped to unify India under a great Empire and transformed it from a civilisational entity to a strong empire state. The first was the Mauryan RMA of using War Elephants in mass to generate shock & awe. This politically unified the whole of India and Afghanistan for the first time. The next RMA came with the Mughals who introduced Field Artillery, Muskets and Horsed Cavalry Archers with stirrups and cross bows. The Mughal horsed cavalry and artillery helped spawn the mighty Mughal Empire. The Third RMA came with the British who raised local Infantry Battalions on the European Pattern and drilled them to shoot in disciplined rhythms, to defeat all cavalry charges. This Infantry-based RMA helped establish the British Empire in India. The present Republic is a successor entity of the British Empire. The author has traced the evolution of India’s Strategic Culture to the Arthashastra of Kautilya. The surprise finding is that in the 1971 War – India unconsciously returned to this Kautilyan paradigm of using information dominance, covert war and Shock- Action military campaigns to defeat its adversaries. In the post-independence phase he traces the evolution of India’s war-fighting from the tactical phase of 1947-1962 when India’s capacity was confined to use of 2-3 Divisions alone. The 1965 War saw the graduation to the level of Operational Art, wherein 12 Divisions and a bulk of the Indian Air Force (IAF) saw active combat. The apogee came in 1971 – when India fought a brilliant, Quasi-Total, Tri-Service Campaign that broke Pakistan into two, put 93,000 prisoners of war in the bag and for the first time after the Second World War, created a new nation state with the Force of Arms. He traces the impact of nuclearisation on South Asia and prognosticates about the Future. The time has come, he asserts, for India to create a Fourth RMA in South Asia; and decisively shape outcomes. For this, economic power must be rapidly converted into usable military power. India must field dominant war fighting capabilities in South Asia.Printed Pages: 418. 105031

Indian Women in the House of Fiction
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8189884107; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Indian Women in the House of Fiction explores the quiet negotiation of women and the kinds of homes they wish to inhabit. The house is not merely a backdrop in Indian women’s fiction but almost a character that bears witness to the changes taking place in the protagonists’ lives. The architectural and social spaces of havelis, bungalows and apartments impose their own unique patterns of women’s relationships inside and outside the domestic space. In these fictional homes, women find ways to transform restrictive segregated spaces – like the zenana of a haveli – into a potentially empowering ‘womenspace’ that is carried over into both bungalows and apartments. The current popularity of Indo-English literature notwithstanding, the anxiety of conveying an authentic Indianness in what is sometimes still regarded as an “auntie tongue” shadows some authors and their work. Notions of Indianness are preserved, taught and performed in the home and it is also the site upon which concerns about identity, language, nationalism, family or community values and gender roles are played out. In this book, Geetanjali Singh Chanda maps Indian English women’s literature in India and the diaspora while situating it in the larger framework of world literatures. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Haveli 3. Bungalow 4. Apartments and Alternate Spaces 5. Women-only Homes 6. India As Home 7. Diaspora Homes 8. Conclusion Select Bibliography Printed Pages: 360. 027053

Indian Women in the House of Fiction
Zubaan/Atlantic Publishers & Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383074730; Softcover; New;
In her detailed readings of a wide range of Indian writers -- including Anita Desai, Shashi Deshpande, Anita Nair, Jhumpa Lahiri and many others -- Geetanjali Singh Chanda focuses on domestic spaces in women's fiction. The house is not merely a backd rop, but often almost a character itself, one that bears witness to the changes in the protagonists' lives. Chanda shows how women in these fictional homes find ways to transform restrictive, segregated spaces into a potentially empowering "womenspace," one that can be found in bungalows and apartments alike. The book also analyses the anxiety that still accompanies writing about India in English, and the many concerns about identity, language, nationalism, family, and community that are played out in the home. Environmental Jurisprudence and the Supreme Court: Litigation, Interpretation, Implementation
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125055037; Hardcover; New; New;
Since the 1980s, the Supreme Court of India has intervened regularly and actively in cases involving environmental issues, calling both state and private agencies to task on environmentally destructive actions and policies and asserting itself in the implementation of its judgments. It has thus earned itself a widespread and formidable reputation as a ‘green court’. But how ‘green’ is it really and what does it even mean to be green in an Indian context?Environmental Jurisprudence and the Supreme Court sheds light on these questions by offering the first comprehensive empirical analysis of cases pertaining to environmental litigation that appeared before the Supreme Court between 1980 and 2010. This analysis, supplemented by interviews with judges, lawyers and petitioners in environmental litigations, reveals that there is no single stance or attitude governing the Supreme Court’s approach to environmental issues. Rather, the Court has reacted differently in different cases, sometimes in ways that seem contradictory to its own precedents.The current volume examines a range of judicial attitudes, concerns, pressures and trends with respect to environmental jurisprudence. It emphasises that environmental litigation and activism in India cannot ever be studied or practised in isolation but must rather be concerned in tandem with the twin (and sometimes rival) concerns of development and social justice. It also contextualises the Supreme Court’s decisions within the wider framework of environmental discourse in India, which itself assumes a variety of radically different forms. These range from the so called ‘environmentalism of the poor’, which privileges people’s traditional use and stewardship of natural resources to the more rarefied environmentalism of the middle class, which jettisons concerns of social welfare and development to focus on the intrinsic value of nature.Printed Pages: 344. 101754

When Dreams Travel
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143104284; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
A magical tour de force by a writer at the height of her powers, When Dreams Travel weaves round Scheherazade—or Shahrzad of the thousand and one nights—a vibrant, inventive story about that old game that’s never played out: the quest for love and power. The curtain opens on four figures, two men and two women. There is the sultan who wants a virgin every night; there is his brother, who makes an enemy of darkness and tries to banish it; and there are their ambitious brides, the sisters Shahrzad and Dunyazad, aspiring to be heroines—or martyrs. Travelling in and out of these lives to spellbinding effect is a range of stories, dark, poetic and witty by turns, spanning medieval to contemporary times. With its sharp and lively blend of past and present, its skilful reworking of the historical tradition, and its controlled use of evocative language, Githa Hariharan’s multi-voiced narrative assumes the significance of modern myth. The Celestial Nagasvaram: Origin, Myths, Reception and the Maestros
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 819270212X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Nagasvaram, world’s loudest non-brass acoustic instrument, is known as mangala vadyam (auspicious instrument), and raja vadyam (king of all instruments). This popular wind-group musical instrument is well known all over the south Indian states, more specifically in Tamil Nadu. Its origin is associated with the Thiruvarur Temple and its legacy continued all through the Pallavas, Colas, Pandyas, Nayakas, and Marathas. It has imprinted its sheen on all the rituals, especially, on the temple festivals and marriages. This book makes an in-depth study of the history of evolution, penetration and growth of nagasvaram into the cultural moorings of south India over a period of 800 years. It makes a systematic study of nagasvaram (myths associated with it, its making, types, etc.), its accompanying instruments, its relevance in temple festivals, marriages, the traditions associated with nagasvaram, its prevalence and acceptability in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, in addition to Tamil Nadu where it rules the roost. It widely introduces the great maestros of nagasvaram, for whom it was a nishkama karma. Kings, temples and mathas were the promoters of this blissful instrument. At present this artform faces severe challenges from the all-pervasive Western musical instruments. The author suggests ways and means of how to maintain the legacy of nagasvaram live, and the need to preserve the rich heritage of our musical tradition for the benefit of our posterity to realize the Supreme Bliss in their life. This book, rare of its kind, will enthrall those who are keen on instrumental music, especially the faculty, students, and professionals in the field of music, religion and art.Printed Pages: 215 with 72 color photographs. 100298

Feminine Fables: Imaging the Indian Woman in Painting, Photography and Cinema
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8185822883; Hardcover; New; New;
A new iconography of the Indian woman seems to be emerging which challenges the traditional “images” and roles of women. Dramatic changes in projecting the woman reflect changes in societal norms and taboos. These roles for the modern woman are subversive, mapping out bold new frontiers for her to explore. The effects are persuasive in being projected through the media, the fourth estate in society, and through the popular genre of Hindi cinema.Set against the feminist discourse, these images raise different questions about “seeing” the Indian woman. Traced over the century, they suggest an extraordinary transformation in imaging the Indian woman, as manifested in painting, photography, popular posters and classical cinema. In five seminal essays, this book examines central issues regarding the woman: whether she is regarded as a woman or a goddess; whether her body is treated as an object or subject of pleasure; if she has the freedom to move from home to the world outside; if she is expected to play multiple roles or is perceived in her integral self; and if she has learnt now to re-assert her own power. Journeys: Heroes, Pilgrims, Explorers
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0670057967; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Journeys are voyages of discovery, infinitely enriching explorations of the self and of the universe. Journeys can take you to the Himalayas, across oceans, into the wilderness of forests and to the farthest corners of the earth and the human mind. Such journeys are sagas of the human spirit and of endurance—the will to break free from the mundane and the familiar. This unique volume of twenty-two essays, photoessays and critical texts brings together accounts of epic heroes and saints, pilgrims and trekkers, journalists and photographers, historians and folklorists. They are travellers who chart their course across vast seas and countries other than their own in search of the unknown and the exotic. While their narratives may be deeply personal, they are, ultimately, accounts of voyages that are universal. At times these are private confessions that transcend details of geography and conquest to express the solitude of the traveller. This volume also includes moving accounts of spiritual journeys that delve into the recesses of the mind—like those of Akkamahadevi, Bulle Shah, Nanak, and countless poets, singers and saints—and journeys typical of the Indian tradition—those of the yogi prince, renouncing the illusionary nature of the finite world to attain immortality. And finally, there is the journey through life by those who are touched by a moment of revelation which transforms their inner and outer selves. Here we follow the path taken by a writer, an artist, a dancer and an activist as they speak of transformation. Deeply felt, revelatory and inspiring, the writings in Journeys explore voyages both finite and infinite—journeys into the unknown and into the inner psyche that are a reaffirmation of the power of the human spirit and imagination. The Joy of the Gospel of Life: Contextual Reflections on Mission and Evangelism
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8184655835; Softcover; New;
Ecumenical missiology has travelled quite far since Edinburgh (1910). It has undergone sweeping changes ever since. The accent on missiology has shifted from colonial modes to postcolonial paradigms; from classical modes to contextual modes; from monolithic Euro-centric ways of thinking and doing mission to polyphonic expressions of missiology; from confessional slants to truly ecumenical perspectives; and from human centredness to life-centric missiology. It is these shifts in mission thinking that this book attempts to reflect on. "Bishop Coorilos' approaches are not always based on anger and cries alone, but also on the joy that is generated while standing with the oppressed people in fighting for their dignity and liberation; when we are committed to the mission of solidarity with the marginalized, and when we move 'together towards life'. This has equipped him to write this book with a broad vision of the ecumenical movement. It is my humble honor to commend this volume for the purpose of rejuvenating the ecumenical movement and re-energizing mission with 'the joy of the Gospel of Life.''' Printed Pages: 182. 113676

10848 Gene Reeves (translation and introduction)
The Lotus Sutra
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 0861715713; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The Lotus Sutra is one of the world's great religious scriptures and most influential texts. It has been a seminal work in the development of Buddhism throughout East Asia, and by extension in the development of Mahayana Buddhism throughout the world. Taking place in a vast and fantastical cosmic setting, the Lotus Sutra places emphasis on skillfully doing whatever is needed to serve and compassionately care for others, on breaking down sharp distinctions between the ideals of the fully enlightened buddha and the bodhisattva who vows to postpone personal salvation until all beings may share it together, and especially on each and every being's innate capacity to become a buddha. This new translation takes particular care to appeal to readers with little or no familiarity with technical Buddhism vocabulary, and this volume includes the full "threefold" text of this classic. The Guide to India: A Tibetan Account
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8186470255; Softcover; New;
The creative and controversial Tibetan intellectual Amdo Gendun Chophel (1903-1951) composed his Guide to India during the 1930s while visiting many of the ancient sites of Indian Buddhism, which had only recently been the object of archaeological rediscovery and modern religious revival. His work offered traditionally minded pilgrims from the remote Tibetan highlands clear instructions on the correct identification of authentic Buddhist sites, as well as a unique practical guide for using the Indian rail system. The Guide to India is one of the first works of modern Tibetan literature, and was to become the most widely used manual of contemporary Tibetan pilgrimage.Printed Pages: 174. 103654

Extraordinary Groups: How Ordinary Teams Achieve Amazing Results
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8126528303; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Occasionally we participate in a group that inspires us to describe the experience as "powerful" or simply "wow." Why are some teams described in such exceptional terms, while most are not? Bellman and Ryan argue that an extraordinary group emerges when a group experience satisfies two or more core needs that members intuitively bring to any group they join. Based on extensive research, the book presents the Group Needs Model to help anyone nurture extraordinary experiences in their groups and achieve outstanding results.Printed Pages: 248. 104628

The Origins of Yoga and Tantra: Indic Religions to the Thirteenth Century
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0521118689; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 160 x 235 Mm
Yoga, tantra and other forms of Asian meditation are practised in modernized forms throughout the world today, but most introductions to Hinduism or Buddhism tell only part of the story of how they developed. This book is an interpretation of the history of Indic religions up to around 1200 CE, with particular focus on the development of yogic and tantric traditions. It assesses how much we really know about this period, and asks what sense we can make of the evolution of yogic and tantric practices, which were to become such central and important features of the Indic religious scene. Its originality lies in seeking to understand these traditions in terms of the total social and religious context of South Asian society during this period, including the religious practices of the general population with their close engagement with family, gender, economic life and other pragmatic concerns. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Stories and sources Part I. Meditation and Yoga: 3. The second urbanisation of South Asia 4. Two worlds and their interactions 5. Religion in the early states 6. The origins of the Buddhist and Jain orders 7. The Brahmanical alternative 8. Interlude: asceticism and celibacy in Indic religions Part II. Tantra: 9. The classical synthesis 10. Tantra and the wild goddesses 11. Subtle bodies, longevity and internal alchemy 12. Tantra and the state 13. The later history of yoga and tantra 14. Postlude. Indian Palaeography
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 812151116X; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 19 Cms x 26 Cms
Professor Buhler's Indische Palaeographie, consisting of 96 pages with 9 plates of alphabetical characters and numerals and 8 tables of explanatory transliteration of them, was originally published in 1896. An English version of this was prepared by Professor Buhler himself; the manuscript was on its way to the press at the time of his death. J.F. Fleet, with great difficulties, recovered the MS, and got it printed in Indian Antiquary, 1904, in the form of an Appendix. But it was the text without the plated and tables. And that had been the only form in which it has so far been available to our students and scholars. It is a matter of great satisfaction that for the first time the complete English version of Buhler's monumental work, along with the Plated and Tables, in its proper book-form is published. Page-references of the German original are indicated in square brackets along with Fleet's valuable Introduction to the text. Printed Pages: 139 with maps and tables. 033110

The Yoga Tradition: Its History, Literature, Philosophy and Practice
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8120819233; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Yoga Tradition - Its History, Literature, Philosophy and Practice is an authoritative treatment of the subject. The author has dedicated his life for the understanding and practice of Yoga and successfully established that Yoga is a systematic science; its teachings are an integral part of most religions, but Yoga itself is not a religion. Most religions teach what to do, but Yoga teaches how to be. Yet Yoga practices described in symbolic language, may be found in the sacred scriptures of most religions. Mystics of all religions have practiced Yoga in one form or another. The author has been able to make the reader believe that Yoga is not an esoteric Eastern philosophy, it is a practical, systematic, and scientific quest for perfection, as relevant today as it was in ancient times, as relevant in the West as it is in the East. A complete overview of the great Yogic traditions of; Raja-Yoga, Hatha-Yoga, Jnana-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, Karma-Yoga, Tantra-Yoga, Kundalini-Yoga, Mantra-Yoga and many other lesser known forms. Includes translations of over twenty famous Yoga treatises, like the Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali, and a first-time translation of the Goraksha Paddhati, and ancient Hatha Yoga text. This will certainly prove to be an authoritative reference encyclopaedia for all those who are keen to understand the history, concept, faith, philosophy and practical aspects of this science which have its roots deep into Indian soil.Printed Pages: 718. 102309
