Preparing the Ground
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170171881; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"PREPARING THE GROUND is a second collection of ‘Leaves from an Undated Diary’, which appeared in Hindi under the title ANTRA in 1975. The first collection, BHAVANTI in Hindi (1971), was published in translation as TRUCULENT CLAY in 1982. Neither a compilation of impromptu jottings from a writer’s field-book, nor a diary recording day to day events in a writer’s life, nor studied epigrammatic utterances, nor again a collection of miniature personal essays, both BHAVANTI and ANTRA sought to be all these and yet more : an attempt to present an integrated vision of the writer’s struggle with his medium, defined in the widest sense as including the tools of his craft, his literary, social, spiritual environment, his interaction with his contemporaries and with their pet ideas. What the author was attempting to do in these series of what he ahs variously described as ‘inscapes’, ‘interior events’, ‘inward journeys’ and ‘dateless journals’ was to present, in an apparently loosely strung yet integrated form, the writer’s world, both as subjectively experienced and as objectively viewed and evaluated but to present these processes in their simultaneity and immediacy. 108030

Behenji: A Political Biography of Mayawati
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0670082015; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Mayawati has changed the face of politics in India, turning old assumptions upside down and restructuring power equations entrenched for centuries, if not millennia. The path she has blazed through the Byzantine political system of Uttar Pradesh has been a unique tour de force. Not only has she been the chief minister four times, but she has done so by overturning the established electoral traditions of a state that virtually invented modern Indian politics. With her in-your-face political style, unabashed display of accumulated wealth and mercurial nature, she is, perhaps, the most enigmatic Indian politician for decades. How did Mayawati, a studious, diffident Dalit schoolteacher, the summit of whose ambitions was to be an IAS officer, become the iconoclastic, combative politician, universally known as ‘Behenji’ today? Her trajectory is all the more impressive not just because her modest background has no previous connection to politics, she has also had to bear the burden of being a Dalit and a woman. Possibly her greatest achievement has been to forge, with the help of her mentor, Kanshi Ram, a completely new context for Dalit politics. Bypassing both the slogans of victimhood, as well as those of street-level activism, she has negotiated from within the system to create new alliances with lower backward castes, Muslims and now, surprisingly, upper-caste Brahmins as well. Eminent journalist Ajoy Bose brings his in-depth experience of covering Indian politics for over three decades to this pioneering political biography of Mayawati. He explores the background of her meteoric rise and examines the growing national clout of this unique woman who could, quite possibly, determine the shape of the next Indian government, and even be the country’s prime minister one day. 'Those who tend to rubbish Indian democracy and get impatient with its indubitable flaws should ponder whether there is a historic parallel anywhere else where a woman belonging to the most crushed community known to mankind has risen through the heat and dust of elections to rule two hundred million people and may well reach further to guide the destiny of a billion more in the not too distant future. India Becoming: A Journey through a Changing Landscape
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2012; 0670086312; Softcover; New;
India has changed dramatically in recent years, but what does all this change mean for he lives of ordinary Indians? In this gripping and often moving book, Akash Kapur follows a handful of men and women as they confront the ups and downs of life in modern India.Unlike most contemporary accounts of the country, India Becoming is not focused on the big cities of the North, but on the villages and small towns of South India. We meet farmers struggling with the decline of agriculture, once-sleepy villages that are turning into boom towns, and men and women coming to terms with the gradual disappearance of an ancient way of life.Kapur himself grew up and now lives in the countryside outside Pondicherry. India Becoming is the result of his effort to understand the changing landscape of India, transformed by rapid economic growth, which he first encountered on his return to India from the United States in 2003. He writes about that transition with an intimacy and sensitivity rarely encountered in contemporary accounts of India.Printed Pages: 280. 103450

Spiritual Psychology
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8182200954; Hardcover; New; New;
Theoretical and empirical work in the area of spiritual psychology improves our understanding of the physical and spiritual world, or the behaviour and experience of humans. It also improves our ability to help people enhance their spiritual well-being. This book explains how the theoretical concepts make sense by showing how they relate to practice, training and research. The field of spiritual psychology touches some of the liveliest area of research, practice, treatment and training and the ways in which we tie ourselves up in knots by taking our thoughts and feelings too religiously. It attempts to treat clients through various modes of healing, developing spiritual personality, spiritual counselling and spiritual love and spiritual transformations. This book provides intriguing psychological insights and generates new ideas for research in other fields of applied psychology such as personality, counselling, industrial and organizational psychology. In my view, the book is an ambitious, scholarly and provocative. It will be helpful in going through complex psychological issues and to discover the pathway to the inner heaven. The focus of this book is practical. Printed Pages: 176. 110068

Discovering Islam: Making Sense of Muslim History and Society (Revised Edition)
Routledge; London, UK; 2003; 8174362762; First Indian Reprint; Paperback; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
Now reissued with a new introduction, Discovering Islam is a classic account of how the history of Islam and its relations with the west have shaped Islamic society today. Islam is often caricatured as aggressive and fanatic. Written in the tradition of Ibn Khaldun, this readable and wide ranging book balances that image, uncovers the roots of Islamic discontent and celebrates the sources of its strength. From the four "ideal Caliphs" who succeeded the Prophet to the refugee camps of Peshawar, an objective picture emerges of the main features of Muslim history and the compulsions of Muslim society. Red Tape: Bureaucracy, Structural Violence, and Poverty in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125047204; Hardcover; New; New;
Red Tape presents a major new theory of the state developed by the renowned anthropologist Akhil Gupta. Seeking to understand the chronic and widespread poverty in India, the world''s fourth largest economy, Gupta conceives of the relation between the state in India and the poor as one of structural violence. Every year this violence kills between two and three million people, especially women and girls, and lower-caste and indigenous peoples. Yet India''s poor are not disenfranchised; they actively participate in the democratic project. Nor is the state indifferent to the plight of the poor; it sponsors many poverty amelioration programs.Printed Pages: 101776

Democracy, Sustainable Development, and Peace: New Perspectives on South Asia
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198092342; Hardcover; New; New;
A participatory democracy that engenders social cohesion helps promote economic development. Persistent mass poverty and economic disparities, however, are constraints to fulfilling such a vision of democracy among the nations of South Asia?a region which is at a conjunctural moment in its history. The book examines, in the context of South Asia, four interrelated dimensions that constitute the central policy challenges of our time: strengthening democracy through greater social inclusion in the process of democratic governance, confronting violent extremism, overcoming mass poverty through inclusive growth, and addressing the crisis of the environment. With contributions from some of the eminent scholars and public figures in South Asia, this volume explores these interrelated themes at the country-specific and regional levels. The essays argue that participatory democracy and inclusive growth need to be underpinned by the norms and core values that signify the `unity in diversity` of South Asia. Printed Pages: 652. 108798

China's Geo-Strategy and International Behaviour
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382652663; Hardcover; New; New;
Geography confers advantages and imposes restrictions on regions. Regional powers over the millennia, leverage the former and aim to overcome the latter to maximize their gains. Such behaviour has been more consistent than political or religious ideologies. This can be seen in turmoil in Pakistan despite religious homogeneity and the failure of the erstwhile USSR China Vietnam axis at the height of Cold War despite similar ideology and structures.Likely emergence of China as a global power has placed its neighbours on the horns of dilemma, where some portray it as expansionist and hegemonistic power, others believe it to be an engine for economic rise. The challenge of managing China would require understanding its long term goals and likely means it would employ to achieve them. The process initiated by Deng Xiaoping has made China an economic giant which many believe is Communist only in name. Even while the Third Plenum of November 2013 seeks to strengthen the process, it also has recognized vulnerabilities in society, which have the potential of causing internal collapse.The book aims to understand China's geographical advantages and restrictions along with its history and economic structure; the themes that emerge are important indicators to understand its Geo-Strategy. China's international behaviour of the last few decades not only validates these but also points to the means that China is employing to achieve its aim. Important lessons thus emerge for managing partnership with China.Printed Pages: 218. 103189

Poetry, Politics and Culture: Essays on Indian Texts and Contexts
Routledge; London, UK; 2008; 0415480051; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book maps the journey of the Indian poetic imagination—in Hindi, Panjabi and Indian English—from its original quasi-spiritual longings to its activist interventions in the public domain. As Indian poetry of the post-1990s gravitates towards a non-Orientalised postcolonial nationalism, it seeks to rewrite and disseminate the shifting coordinates of nationalist imagination in terms of the dissent of the subaltern discontents of the nation. The book is interdisciplinary: it studies Indian poetry from the new emerging imperatives of postcolonialism, new historiography (subaltern, dalit and diasporas), nationalism, and cultural studies. Covering the two major north Indian languages—Hindi and Punjabi—along with poetry in Indian English, the book is a close textual study of about 150 poetry collections in these languages. It is path-breaking in its study of secular poetry written in the so-called vernaculars, with critical attention to its participation in the political as well as cultural processes of nation-making. This cutting-edge book should be of interest to scholars of Indian writings in English, Hindi and Panjabi, gender studies, dalit and diaspora studies, postcolonial poetry and to students reading South Asian literature and culture. Table of Contents 1. Preface 2. Acknowledgement Part I: Mapping Nation/Post-nation 3. Negotiating Nationalism(s): Hindi Poetry during and after the Colonial Period 4. Philosophy of Gorakhnath: With Goraksha-Vacana-Sangraha
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120805348; Sixth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
This book analyses in detail the nature of Samadhi Experience. The term "Experience" is perhaps inaccurate, because in this state of Samadhi, there is no relation between subject and object, the experiencer and the experienced. It is the fulfilment of life as described in the Yogasutras. The Yogi who comes back from Samadhi may not have attained Kaivalya or Moksha, but he is illuminated by his experience. If he assumes the role of a teacher or preacher, he gives expression to his experience in such forms as may be easily intelligible to the people at large. Gorakhnath was a Maha-Yogi. The cult of the Kanphata Yogis is a definite unite within Hinduism, and its study is essential for understanding this phase of the religious life of India. the book is divided into three sections. The first two sections comprising chapters 1 - 13 deal with the cult and history of this sec. the third section containing chapters 14 - 16 opens with the Sanskrit Text Goraksastaka and its English rendering and annotations. The book is fully documented. It has a preface, Glossary, Bibliography, Plates and General Index. This book is an attempt to present a systematic and consistent account of the philosophical background of the spiritual culture associated with the names of Yogi Gorakhnath and other adepts of the natha school.Printed Pages: 397. 102203

Philosophy of Gorakhnath: With Goraksha-Vacana-Sangraha
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8120805356; Fifth Reprint; Softcover; New;
This volume contains the essence of the writings and teachings of Mahayogi Gorakhnath. It is well pointed out that while the ultimate object of search is the same for a Yogi and a philosopher, their modes of approach are different, the latter?s being intellectual and the former?s intuitive and spiritual. The task of a Yogi does not require any subtle intellectual speculation or the framing of hypotheses and theories. The quest of the Yogi is direct spiritual experience of truth on a high plane of consciousness. The highest state of Samadhi attained by the Yogi is neither purely subjective nor objective. It transcends both categories and it is really an integrated experience beyond formal description. Such a transcendent state of consciousness is alone called Samadhi. This book analyses in detail the nature of Samadhi Experience. The term ?Experience? is perhaps inaccurate, because in this state of Samadhi, there is no relation between subject and object, the experiencer and the experienced. It is the fulfilment of life as described in the Yogasutras. The Yogi who comes back from Samadhi may not have attained Kaivalya or Moksha, but he is illuminated by his experience. Introduction to the Study of Musical Scales
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121509203; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Man's awareness, from time immemorial, of the power of sound when its notes are arranged in certain patterns to elevate him to the region of absolute bliss or plunge him to the abyss of utter despair, has led him to formulate rules for coordinating sounds to evoke the desired response. In the process he discovered the correspondence between sounds and different aspects of universe; the scales of five and seven notes represent the five elements and seven planets; the movements of these notes in the regions of the twelve octaves have their parallel in the planetary motions across the twelve signs of the zodiac. The obstacles in his path for the formulation of a perfect scale of music in which the acoustic intervals shall be sufficient and simple to give the harmony, which shall evoke such images and feelings that shall transport him to the realms of pure joy, are many. Yet his search has not ceased. This book, Introduction to the Study of Musical Scales by Alain Danielou describes man's unending quest for the right musical scale. This book is unique as it brings out in very clear language the importance of the study of musical scales; for music is the force that cements the relation between terrestrial and cosmic phenomena. The Myths and Gods of India: The Classic Work on Hindu Polytheism
Inner Traditions; Rochester, USA; 0892813547; Paperback; New;
The study of Hindu mythology explores the significance of the most prominent Hindu dieties as they are envisioned by the Hindus themselves. Referred to by its adherents as the "eternal religion," Hinduism recognizes for each age and each country a new form of revelation--and for each person, according to his or her stage of development, a different path of realization. This widely praised study of Hindu deities reveals the message of tolerance and adaptability at the heart of this ancient religion. Printed Pages: 441. 037936

The Hindu Temple: Deification of Eroticism
Inner Traditions; Rochester, USA; 0892818549; Paperback; New;
Danielou's masterpiece on the erotic nature of the sacred symbolism of the Hindu temple. * Includes stunning photographs from the major temple complexes of India. * By Alain Danielou, one of the greatest authorities on Hinduism. Ancient Indian architectural treatises state that a temple lacking erotic imagery would be ineffective and maleficent. The erotic statues and representations that cover the outer and inner walls of the Hindu temple serve both a magical and an instructional purpose. Through the power of the yantras--the magical diagrams created by the placement of the erotic imagery--the architect made the temple a faithful reflection of the divine. At the same time this imagery educated the faithful about the fundamental aspects of the Hindu religion, wherein the union of opposites in the sexual act is the perfect image of the creative principle, and erotic enjoyment is a reflection of divine bliss. Alain Danielou's masterpiece on the Hindu temple, now translated for the first time into English, provides a stunningly illustrated tour of the major temple complexes of India. The erotic sculptures that cover the walls of these temples are not merely symbolic portrayals of voluptuous acts but serve as profound reminders that man is closest to the divine during the instant of sexual transcendence. The Ragas of Northern Indian Music
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 812150225X; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The first part of the book traces the history of Indian music and the continuity of its theory and practice for more than two thousand years. It is based on many years' research into the vast ancient Sanskrit literature of music. These valuable technical treatises, which lie in the form of scarcely catalogued manuscripts throughout the public and private libraries of India, had hitherto remained unemplored. Part Two transcribes and studies in detail 50 typical Raga-s. Each is preceded by a Sanskrit poem in translation which depicts the atmosphere; then follows an analysis of the scale, covering its intervals and expression, a study of the theme with its characteristic motives and finally a typical development. The present work is based on the author's two-volume Northern Indian Music published in London (but not America) some ten years ago, but long out of print and much sought after by students. It was described by Colin Mason in the Manchester Guardian as "of immense value to any practical musician" and "an invaluable addition to the very scanty literature of fascinating and neglected subject". This new version contains a number of additional Raga-s; the earlier text has been extensively revised and many music examples redrawn for greater clarity and accuracy. Some abridgement has taken place, but only of material which appeared originally for the benefit of Indian readers unfamiliar with Western staff notation, those able to read Sanskrit, and specialists in Sanskrit literature. The book provides modern composers outside India with a source of new inspiration and enables practising musicians to play and study some of the endlessly variegated modes for which Indian music is unique. India: A Civillization of Difference. The Ancient Tradition of Universal Tolerance
Inner Traditions; Rochester, USA; 2013; 1594770484; Paperback; New;
A collection of Daniélou's writings that builds a bold and cogent defense of India's caste system • Looks at the Hindu caste system not as racist inequality but as a natural ordering of diversity • Reveals the stereotypes of Indian society invented to justify colonialism • Includes never-before-published articles by the internationally recognized Hindu scholar and translator of The Complete Kama Sutra (200,000 copies sold) In classical India social ethics are based on each individual's functional role in society. These ethics vary according to caste in order to maximize the individual's effectiveness in the social context. This is the definition of caste ethics. The Indian caste system is not a hierarchy with some who are privileged and others who are despised; it is a natural ordering, an organizing principle, of a society wherein differences are embraced rather than ignored. In the caste system it is up to the individual to achieve perfection in the state to which he or she is born, since to a certain extent that state also forms part of a person's nature. All people must accomplish their individual spiritual destinies while, as members of a social group, ensuring the continuity of the group and collaborating in creating a favorable framework for all human life--thereby fulfilling the collective destiny of the group. The notion of transmigration provides an equalizing effect on this prescribed system in that today's prince may be reborn as a woodcutter and the Brahman as a shoemaker. In India: A Civilization of Differences, Daniélou explores this seldom-heard side of the caste debate and argues effectively in its favor. This rare collection of the late author's writings contains several never-before-published articles and offers an in-depth look at the structure of Indian society before and after Western colonialism. Intonation (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1986; 0521260280; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
When originally published in 1986, this book was the first to survey intonation in all its aspects, both in English and universally. In this updated edition, while the basic descriptive facts of the form and use of intonation are presented in the British nuclear tone tradition, there is nevertheless extensive comparison with other theoretical frameworks, in particular with the ToBI framework, which has become widespread in the United States. In this new edition Alan Cruttenden has expanded the sections on historical background, different theoretical approaches and sociolinguistic variation. After introductory chapters on the physiology and acoustics of pitch, he describes in detail the forms and functions of intonation in English and discusses the sociolinguistic and dialectal variations in intonation. The concluding chapter provides an overview of the state of the art in intonational studies. Contents Acknowledgements; Preface; Transcriptions; 1. Preliminaries; 2. Stress, accent, and rhythm; 3. The forms of intonation; 4. The functions of intonation; 5. Comparative intonation; 6. Conspectus; References; Index. Printed Pages: 217. 003125

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8121511410; Second Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This is the title of one of the most important religious books in the world, occupying, in the literature of the Higher Buddhism, a place not dissimilar to that of our own New Testament. Its importance is increased when one considers that it formulates the fundamental doctrines of the Mahayana School, and was written by Ashvaghosha, one of the greatest poets of India, during an early part of the first century AD - a period when communication between East and West was reasonably frequent and extensive. Not only have Buddhist sages considered it of the utmost worth - it has also been counted one of the five most valuable Buddhist scriptures by eminent Western scholars, and has been quoted and praised by such writers as Aldous Huxley, Dr E.Y. Evans-Wentz (in his monumental Tibetan series Published by the Oxford University Press), E.A. Burtt (Sage Professor of Philosophy at Cornell University), Christmas Humphreys, Maurice Percheron, Dr Edward Conze, and others. Should we decide to estimate the value of books by the number of those adhering to the doctrines expounded therein, then, after the Bible, the Quran, the Confucian Classics, and the Vedas, this volume ranks not only as one of the five most important books of Mahayana Buddhism, but fifth among the sacred books of the world. Much published work offers material for a study of the apparently common ground of Buddhism and Christianity, but few shed greater light than this reasonably short work by the first and finest full-length biographer of Gautama the Buddha. Encyclopaedia of Mildrash: Biblical Interpretation in Formative Judaism, 2 Vols.
Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 9004141669; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The Encyclopedia of Midrash — Biblical Interpretation in Formative Judaism, provides a systematic account of biblical interpretation in Judaism, from well before the second century BCE through the end of the seventh century CE. While emphasizing the Rabbinic literature, it also covers interpretation of Scripture in a number of distinct canons, ranging from the Targumic literature and Dead Sea Scrolls to the New Testament and Church Fathers. The encyclopedia comprises fifty-six essays written by thirty scholars, representing the leading figures in the study of ancient Judaism and biblical interpretation in North America, Europe, and the State of Israel. Alongside a general introduction to Rabbinic Midrash and its traits, including the theoretical questions of definition, origins, theology, hermeneutics, genre-criticism, and language, the encyclopedia addresses specific topics of concern in the study of scriptural interpretation. How Rabbinic midrashic documents that focus on specific books of Scripture read those specific books, the theology expressed by Rabbinic midrashic compilations, and the historical context in which Rabbinic Midrash took shape all are treated. Beyond these central issues in understanding Rabbinic Midrash, the encyclopedia treats interpretations of Scripture that came to closure prior to, or outside of, the framework of Rabbinic Midrash: Hellenistic Jewish Midrash, Josephus, Pseudo-Philo, Jubilees, as well as to the New Testament, Karaite and Samaritan writings, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Encyclopedia of Midrash provides readers with a depth and breadth of treatment of Midrash unavailable in any other single source. Through the writings of top scholars in each of their fields, it sets out the current state of the question for each of the many topics discussed in its pages. Set of 2 vols. 011837

Become What You Are
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 2003; 1570629404; Expanded Edition; Paperback; New;
"Life exists only at this very moment, and in this moment it is infinite and eternal. For the present moment is infinitely small; before we can measure it, it has gone, and yet it exists forever. . . . You may believe yourself out of harmony with life and its eternal Now; but you cannot be, for you are life and exist Now."—from Become What You Are In this collection of writings, including nine new chapters never before available in book form, Watts displays the intelligence, playfulness of thought, and simplicity of language that has made him so perennially popular as an interpreter of Eastern thought for Westerners. He draws on a variety of religious traditions, and covers topics such as the challenge of seeing one's life "just as it is," the Taoist approach to harmonious living, the limits of language in the face of ineffable spiritual truth, and the psychological symbolism of Christian thought.
