Geetawali and Barvai Ramayan Ram
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2006; 8183900089; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This 3-in-l omnibus volume presents Goswami Tulsidas' 2 major texts- Geetawali (V.S. 1625-1628) and Barvai Ramayan (V.S. 1670) besides a Sanskrit composition called Ram Raksha Stotra.Geetawali is a classic composition narrating the divine story of Lord Ram in the poetic style called Geet set to the tunes and lyrics of various Raagas. It displays Tulsidas' versatile acumen and matchless prowess as a poet, a musician, a devotee par-excellence and a maveric player with words. It is a veritable emotional Hindola (swing) which takes us in an oscillating ride of euphoria, exhilaration, ecstasy and merriment on one hand and despair, gloom, remorse, contrition, agonies, sorrows, torments and tribulations on the other.Barvai Ramayan on the other hand is short, clipped and crisp composition in the poetic style called Barvai consisting of 2-line couplets. Here details are omitted and the divine story is told by citing the main events only. The emphasis here is on the importance of Sri Ram's holy name.Printed Pages: 455. 103822

Traditional and Non-Traditional Security Threats to Central Asian Security
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502830; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Traditional conception of security emphasises territorial integrity and national sovereignty as primary values to be protected. In this notion, traditional threats are essentially related to external military threats that seek to undermine the security of the sovereign state and its territorial integrity. As the present book shows, the threats to Central Asian security are both external and internal. Today challenges from non-traditional threats are greater than traditional ones. Ethnic, religious and linguistic issues can create instability. Similarly, poverty, hunger, unemployment and unequal distribution of wealth as well as environmental issues are going to pose the biggest challenge to the regional states in the near future. The drying up of the Aral Sea is affecting the health and lives of hundreds of thousands of people cutting across republics. Water-related confrontations are not unlikely given the problems related to water-sharing in the region. This book focuses mainly on many of the non-traditional security threats to Central Asian states which can even affect relations between states and transform into traditional security challenges.Printed Pages: 390. 104366

Globalisation and Eurasia
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8187966823; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Consisting of former Soviet Republics, the Eurasian region has drawn international attention due to its geopolitical significance and hydrocarbon resources, which has prompted the US and other external powers like China, Turkey, Iran, the European Union and India to actively engage themselves in the region. Russia is once again emerging as a central player in the region as it moves towards stabilizing its economy and political system. At the same time, given the pluralities within the region, there are multiple conflicts based on ethnic, religious and geopolitical discontents, making the region susceptible to rivalries and conflicts. Eurasia is also a region where many external powers are seeking to intensify their geopolitical influence. This region, which lies in the extended neighbourhood of India, has had longstanding ties with the subcontinent in the past. The developments in the region have immense security implications for India. In view of India’s rapidly increasing energy requirements, the region could be an alternative source of energy.This book discusses the strategic environment in Eurasia and issues related to security, stability and inter-state relations in Eurasia. The involvement of external powers and their relations with different Eurasian countries is an important theme of the book. Social and cultural dimensions of post-Socialist changes have been discussed in the context of a range of economic and political transformations. The proposition that links changing alignment of state with society in the context of globalisation has been scrutinised in this book.Printed Pages: 480. 104422

Ancient North-East India (Pragjyotisha)
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8173052190; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
"It is often stated and the common people made to believe that the people of what was anciently called Pragjyotisha and its surroundings in the north-east were outside the mainstream of Indian life and culture, and the Aryans attempted to colonise them and impose upon them their alien culture. The utter falsity of this motivated propaganda has been amply demonstrated in the present work with strong evidences. It has been shown that the word arya had originally no racial or linguistic connotation and that in the past it was employed in purely cultural sense. It was given, evidently deliberately, a racial sense by the Europeans with a vested interest to sow the seeds of dissension among their Indian subjects and thereby perpetuate their rule which has confused large sections of people. It has been shown that from the earliest recorded times the people of the north-east and those of the rest of India were aware of and had a close interaction with one another. And with the passage of time these contacts grew more and more intimate and the region in question and the rest of the country contributed to the common cultural development enriching each other. The monograph thus seeks to trace chronologically and in a pan-Indian perspective the politico-cultural contacts that the region had with the rest of the Indian people." Ancient Indian Heritage Varahamihira's India, 2 Vols
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1996; 817305083X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
Though the great worth of old texts as a source of cultural History is widely acknowledgeed, astrological writings are generally supposed to be deficient in this respect. The erroneousness of the notion will be best illustrated by a glance at the present work dwelling from this angle upon the priceless historical data enshrined in the treatises of Varahamihira, one of the most celebrated astronomers-astrologers that India is justly proud of. His writings afford precious information on practically every aspect of life one can think of and happen to contain the earliest extant datable treatment of several topics in the absence of earlier texts dealing with them which were eclipsed by the comprehensiveness of his works. The present Book takes a critical view of all the information afforded by them objectively in a historical perspective, checking, corroborating and supplementing it from contemporary literary and archaeological sources and highlighting the antecedents and subsequent ramifications in many a case where found imperative. The topics dealt with include, inter alia, historical geography, iconography, idol worship. Indra's festival and other reliogious rituals and practices, varieties of necklaces, perfumery and other items of toilet and personal adornment comprehending hair-dyes, tooth-sticks, umbrellas, chowries and betel-chewing, agricultural and horticultural practices, gem industry and trade, role of Astrology in everyday life, civil and religious architecture, plasters, sculpture, iconometry, earlier literature on a variety of topics much of which is now known only from Varahamihira's works, genesis of the name Varahamihira, Jovian cycles of twelve and sixty years, Meteorology and rainfall, and location of sub-soil water-resources. Thus, this happens to be perhaps the only work presenting critically at one place so much information on so many diverse topics of interest to students of geography, religious history, cosmetics, jewel industry and trade, Agriculture and horticulture, civil and religious architecture, meteorology and hydrology. Great Ages of Indian History Vakatakas: Sources and History
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8173051232; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
The Indian subcontinent was dominated by the Imperial Guptas and Vakatakas for some 2.5 centuries beginning mid-third century AD, and is period is rightly styled Vakataka Gupta Age which formed the classical phase of early Indian history. A reappraisal of Vakataka History has become imperative in the light of the recent epigraphical and Numismatic finds with many of which The Author was closely associated. And in the perspective of these finds a fresh assessment of the extant evidence was also felt essential, and this twin exercise is aimed at in the present work which sheds fresh light on many a baffling issue. To mention only A Few conclusions, the original Vakataka territory lay in the Vindhyan region of Central India, wherefrom they immigrated about 300 AD under Pravara Sena I into Vidarbha to spread their wings far and wide; Kanchanaka, modern Nachna, was their first dynastic capital, there being no mention of Purika in the Vakataka Context in the Puranas; the Vindhyan region continued under the dynasty till the time of Prithivi Shena I; Damodara Sena and Pravara Sena II were two distinct personages who ascended the throne one after another, Narendra Sena's accession was disputed and towards the close of his reign he was deprived of his kingdom by his Vatsagulma cousins; his queen Ajjhitabhattarika was probably a Kadamba Princess; Prithivi Shena II recovered the lost territory besides keeping the Nalas at bay; the Vatsagulma branch of the dynasty aspired to spread its wings in south and west from its very inception; Sarva Sena II interfered into internal affairs of the Kadambas of Vanavasi and put his protege Simhavarman on Kadamba throne and the former's son Deva Sena extended his kingdom at the cost of Kadambas right up to Bidar region of Karnataka besides trying to destabilise his Pravarapura cousins; both the branches ended their political career owing to the growing ambitions of their erstwhile vassals and foes from south and west; Dandin's Dasa-kumara-charita has no bearing on Vakataka end. The Age of the Satavahanas: Great Ages of Indian History, 2 Vols
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8173051593; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
The Satavahanas (Andhra or Andhra-jatiya of the historical sections of the Puranas) occupy a pre-eminent position in early Deccanese history comparable only to that of the Kushanas of North India who were almost contemporaries. However, despite scholarly efforts for over a century and half, numerous basic issues appertaining them including the original seat of their power, total duration of their rule and number of monarchs of the imperial line and chronology, especially the epoch of their rise to power, not to speak of minor problems, have continued baffling historians for long for want of dependable data. The present volume represents a cooperative effort of known authorities to highlight and solve these issues in the light of fresh evidence as well as a reinterpretation of the known data occasioned by this new material. Also included in this volume are important contributions on numismatics, epigraphy, and cultural and archaeological facets. These writings have turned the volume into an indispensable source-book for students of Satavahanas and Deccanese history in particular and early Indian history in general. Hopefully it would be found interesting and thought-provoking by discerning readers. Printed Pages: 524 with 47 halftone illustrations. 100211

Commonwealth of Independent State: Energy Security and Development
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8187966653; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Commonwealth of Independent States [CIS], consisting of the former Soviet Republics, is a region where energy resources and geopolitics have drawn international attention. A range of issues varying from energy issues at the international and local level, policies of states that impact on energy security and also on broader security issues have been discussed by eminent scholars from India and abroad, who also deal with the strategic environment, power rivalries and security architecture in the CIS. Given the pluralities within the region, there are multiple conflicts based on ethnic, religious and geopolitical discontents, making the region susceptible to rivalries and conflicts. At the same time, globalisation and economic liberalisation have influenced state policies and human/social developments in the former Soviet republics. Some of the articles deal with such issues as demography, religion, identity, resource-sharing, mass media, etc. The CIS region, which lies in the extended neighbourhood of India, has had longstanding ties with the subcontinent in the past. The developments in this region have immense security implications for India. In view of India’s rapidly increasing energy requirements, the region could also be an alternate source of energy. Post-Soviet States: Two Decades of Transition and Transformation
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904206; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
their independence in 1991, the former Soviet Republics have gone through difficult transition processes to achieve cultural, economical and political transformations. Diverse internal dynamics have produced diverse outcomes for the countries and peoples of the former Soviet space. While there are different results of transition, there are also similarities due to many common concerns and expectations. The most important question is, What have these new states transformed into where democracy, free market, and functioning civil society are concerned? Or, Has the transformation led to greater polarisation in terms of rich and poor divide, authoritarianism and withdrawal of the state from providing social security, contested geopolitics and increasing external influence? Apart from discussing the challenges that the post-Soviet states face and their coping strategies, the articles in this book also look at how the Eurasian countries participate in the globalisation process while using the energy and natural resources to their benefit.Printed Pages: 368. 104341

Unconditional Equality: Gandhi’s Religion of Resistance
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8178244772; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Unconditional Equality examines Mahatma Gandhi’s critique of liberal ideas of freedom and equality, and his own practice of a freedom and equality organized around religion.Sometimes working against the grain of Gandhi’s explicit formulations, Unconditional Equality reconceives satyagraha (passive resistance) as a politics that strives for the absolute equality of all beings. Liberal traditions usually affirm an abstract equality. But for Gandhi such equality is an “equality of [the] sword”—because it excludes those presumed to lack reason (such as animals or the colonized), but also because those included lose the power to love.Gandhi professes instead a politics organized around dharma, or religion. For him, there can be “no politics without religion.” This involves self-surrender, a freely offered surrender of autonomy and everyday sovereignty. For Gandhi, the “religion that stays in all religions” is satyagraha.Ajay Skaria argues that, conceptually, satyagraha insists on equality without exception of all humans, animals, and things. Heritage of Harmony: An Insight into Medieval India
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121208173; Hardcover; New; New;
Most of the historical works written on Medieval India depict it as an era of dark ages, replete with oppression, atrocities, injustices, forcible conversion, and destruction of holy places. According to such works, there were constant wars between the rulers either to spread or to protect their respective religions. There was disharmony, disunity, distrust and discord among the people and India lagged behind in every field. this misrepresentation of history has greatly harmed the harmonious co-existence of the Indian people and has promoted feelings of ill will, enmity and intolerance between different communities.The truth is that medieval period was an age of elevation, eloquence and enlightenment. Religion was never a source of strife. People lived together as members of a single family and worked together to make India a land of prosperity that dazzled the eyes of the world. Brilliantly written and structured, the book reads like a novel, yet each and every line is backed by years of diligent research. It seeks to place before the people the picture of medieval India as it really was and to restore the perspective that has been deliberately distorted to suite the separatist design of the British imperialist and communalists.Printed Pages: 320. 106061

Strategic Technologies for the Military: Breaking New Frontiers
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 813210241X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book provides a holistic view of the key technologies that are expected to revolutionise military affairs in the near future and change the nature of warfare tactics and the very concept of the ‘battlefield’. It addresses five key technologies—near-space technology, robotics, directed energy weapons, nanotechnology and biotechnology—and explains why they are being considered for military applicability worldwide. It highlights how they would contribute to the future warfare tactics and defence mechanisms of various countries. In addition, it also discusses the possible military utility of two other technologies—ambient intelligence and cognitive technology. Written in an easy-to-understand style, Strategic Technologies for the Military: Breaking New Frontiers presents a social–scientific approach. It describes the nuances of technological development in specific fields and discusses their relevance for future warfare and for issues such as disarmament and arms control. It also dwells into the impact of these developments on the environment. The book begins with a focus on the research going on in several developed countries in the last decade—some of them for nearly two decades now—and then narrows its focus on India and a few developing countries. It concludes with a few India-specific recommendations, which would help policy-makers and military leadership to methodically incorporate the recent technological developments in the future warfare and defence tactics of the country. As can be gauged from the title, this book will be immensely useful for students and academics working in the fields of defence and strategic studies, politics and international relations. Multilingual Education for Social Justice: Globalising the Local
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036989; Softcover; New;
The principles for enabling children to become fully proficient multilinguals through schooling are well known. Even so, most indigenous/tribal, minority and marginalised children are not provided with appropriate mother-tongue-based multilingual education (MLE) that would enable them to succeed in school and society. Experts from all continents ask why, and show how it CAN be done. The book discusses general principles and challenges in depth and presents case studies from Canada and the USA, northern Europe, Peru, Africa, India, Nepal and elsewhere in Asia. Analysis by leading scholars in the field shows the importance of building on local experience. Sharing local solutions globally can lead to better theory, and to action for more social justice and equality through education.Printed Pages:408. 101836

Preparing the Ground
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170171881; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"PREPARING THE GROUND is a second collection of ‘Leaves from an Undated Diary’, which appeared in Hindi under the title ANTRA in 1975. The first collection, BHAVANTI in Hindi (1971), was published in translation as TRUCULENT CLAY in 1982. Neither a compilation of impromptu jottings from a writer’s field-book, nor a diary recording day to day events in a writer’s life, nor studied epigrammatic utterances, nor again a collection of miniature personal essays, both BHAVANTI and ANTRA sought to be all these and yet more : an attempt to present an integrated vision of the writer’s struggle with his medium, defined in the widest sense as including the tools of his craft, his literary, social, spiritual environment, his interaction with his contemporaries and with their pet ideas. What the author was attempting to do in these series of what he ahs variously described as ‘inscapes’, ‘interior events’, ‘inward journeys’ and ‘dateless journals’ was to present, in an apparently loosely strung yet integrated form, the writer’s world, both as subjectively experienced and as objectively viewed and evaluated but to present these processes in their simultaneity and immediacy. 108030

Behenji: A Political Biography of Mayawati
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0670082015; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Mayawati has changed the face of politics in India, turning old assumptions upside down and restructuring power equations entrenched for centuries, if not millennia. The path she has blazed through the Byzantine political system of Uttar Pradesh has been a unique tour de force. Not only has she been the chief minister four times, but she has done so by overturning the established electoral traditions of a state that virtually invented modern Indian politics. With her in-your-face political style, unabashed display of accumulated wealth and mercurial nature, she is, perhaps, the most enigmatic Indian politician for decades. How did Mayawati, a studious, diffident Dalit schoolteacher, the summit of whose ambitions was to be an IAS officer, become the iconoclastic, combative politician, universally known as ‘Behenji’ today? Her trajectory is all the more impressive not just because her modest background has no previous connection to politics, she has also had to bear the burden of being a Dalit and a woman. Possibly her greatest achievement has been to forge, with the help of her mentor, Kanshi Ram, a completely new context for Dalit politics. Bypassing both the slogans of victimhood, as well as those of street-level activism, she has negotiated from within the system to create new alliances with lower backward castes, Muslims and now, surprisingly, upper-caste Brahmins as well. Eminent journalist Ajoy Bose brings his in-depth experience of covering Indian politics for over three decades to this pioneering political biography of Mayawati. He explores the background of her meteoric rise and examines the growing national clout of this unique woman who could, quite possibly, determine the shape of the next Indian government, and even be the country’s prime minister one day. 'Those who tend to rubbish Indian democracy and get impatient with its indubitable flaws should ponder whether there is a historic parallel anywhere else where a woman belonging to the most crushed community known to mankind has risen through the heat and dust of elections to rule two hundred million people and may well reach further to guide the destiny of a billion more in the not too distant future. India Becoming: A Journey through a Changing Landscape
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2012; 0670086312; Softcover; New;
India has changed dramatically in recent years, but what does all this change mean for he lives of ordinary Indians? In this gripping and often moving book, Akash Kapur follows a handful of men and women as they confront the ups and downs of life in modern India.Unlike most contemporary accounts of the country, India Becoming is not focused on the big cities of the North, but on the villages and small towns of South India. We meet farmers struggling with the decline of agriculture, once-sleepy villages that are turning into boom towns, and men and women coming to terms with the gradual disappearance of an ancient way of life.Kapur himself grew up and now lives in the countryside outside Pondicherry. India Becoming is the result of his effort to understand the changing landscape of India, transformed by rapid economic growth, which he first encountered on his return to India from the United States in 2003. He writes about that transition with an intimacy and sensitivity rarely encountered in contemporary accounts of India.Printed Pages: 280. 103450

Spiritual Psychology
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8182200954; Hardcover; New; New;
Theoretical and empirical work in the area of spiritual psychology improves our understanding of the physical and spiritual world, or the behaviour and experience of humans. It also improves our ability to help people enhance their spiritual well-being. This book explains how the theoretical concepts make sense by showing how they relate to practice, training and research. The field of spiritual psychology touches some of the liveliest area of research, practice, treatment and training and the ways in which we tie ourselves up in knots by taking our thoughts and feelings too religiously. It attempts to treat clients through various modes of healing, developing spiritual personality, spiritual counselling and spiritual love and spiritual transformations. This book provides intriguing psychological insights and generates new ideas for research in other fields of applied psychology such as personality, counselling, industrial and organizational psychology. In my view, the book is an ambitious, scholarly and provocative. It will be helpful in going through complex psychological issues and to discover the pathway to the inner heaven. The focus of this book is practical. Printed Pages: 176. 110068

Discovering Islam: Making Sense of Muslim History and Society (Revised Edition)
Routledge; London, UK; 2003; 8174362762; First Indian Reprint; Paperback; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
Now reissued with a new introduction, Discovering Islam is a classic account of how the history of Islam and its relations with the west have shaped Islamic society today. Islam is often caricatured as aggressive and fanatic. Written in the tradition of Ibn Khaldun, this readable and wide ranging book balances that image, uncovers the roots of Islamic discontent and celebrates the sources of its strength. From the four "ideal Caliphs" who succeeded the Prophet to the refugee camps of Peshawar, an objective picture emerges of the main features of Muslim history and the compulsions of Muslim society. Red Tape: Bureaucracy, Structural Violence, and Poverty in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125047204; Hardcover; New; New;
Red Tape presents a major new theory of the state developed by the renowned anthropologist Akhil Gupta. Seeking to understand the chronic and widespread poverty in India, the world''s fourth largest economy, Gupta conceives of the relation between the state in India and the poor as one of structural violence. Every year this violence kills between two and three million people, especially women and girls, and lower-caste and indigenous peoples. Yet India''s poor are not disenfranchised; they actively participate in the democratic project. Nor is the state indifferent to the plight of the poor; it sponsors many poverty amelioration programs.Printed Pages: 101776

Democracy, Sustainable Development, and Peace: New Perspectives on South Asia
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198092342; Hardcover; New; New;
A participatory democracy that engenders social cohesion helps promote economic development. Persistent mass poverty and economic disparities, however, are constraints to fulfilling such a vision of democracy among the nations of South Asia?a region which is at a conjunctural moment in its history. The book examines, in the context of South Asia, four interrelated dimensions that constitute the central policy challenges of our time: strengthening democracy through greater social inclusion in the process of democratic governance, confronting violent extremism, overcoming mass poverty through inclusive growth, and addressing the crisis of the environment. With contributions from some of the eminent scholars and public figures in South Asia, this volume explores these interrelated themes at the country-specific and regional levels. The essays argue that participatory democracy and inclusive growth need to be underpinned by the norms and core values that signify the `unity in diversity` of South Asia. Printed Pages: 652. 108798

China's Geo-Strategy and International Behaviour
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382652663; Hardcover; New; New;
Geography confers advantages and imposes restrictions on regions. Regional powers over the millennia, leverage the former and aim to overcome the latter to maximize their gains. Such behaviour has been more consistent than political or religious ideologies. This can be seen in turmoil in Pakistan despite religious homogeneity and the failure of the erstwhile USSR China Vietnam axis at the height of Cold War despite similar ideology and structures.Likely emergence of China as a global power has placed its neighbours on the horns of dilemma, where some portray it as expansionist and hegemonistic power, others believe it to be an engine for economic rise. The challenge of managing China would require understanding its long term goals and likely means it would employ to achieve them. The process initiated by Deng Xiaoping has made China an economic giant which many believe is Communist only in name. Even while the Third Plenum of November 2013 seeks to strengthen the process, it also has recognized vulnerabilities in society, which have the potential of causing internal collapse.The book aims to understand China's geographical advantages and restrictions along with its history and economic structure; the themes that emerge are important indicators to understand its Geo-Strategy. China's international behaviour of the last few decades not only validates these but also points to the means that China is employing to achieve its aim. Important lessons thus emerge for managing partnership with China.Printed Pages: 218. 103189

Poetry, Politics and Culture: Essays on Indian Texts and Contexts
Routledge; London, UK; 2008; 0415480051; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book maps the journey of the Indian poetic imagination—in Hindi, Panjabi and Indian English—from its original quasi-spiritual longings to its activist interventions in the public domain. As Indian poetry of the post-1990s gravitates towards a non-Orientalised postcolonial nationalism, it seeks to rewrite and disseminate the shifting coordinates of nationalist imagination in terms of the dissent of the subaltern discontents of the nation. The book is interdisciplinary: it studies Indian poetry from the new emerging imperatives of postcolonialism, new historiography (subaltern, dalit and diasporas), nationalism, and cultural studies. Covering the two major north Indian languages—Hindi and Punjabi—along with poetry in Indian English, the book is a close textual study of about 150 poetry collections in these languages. It is path-breaking in its study of secular poetry written in the so-called vernaculars, with critical attention to its participation in the political as well as cultural processes of nation-making. This cutting-edge book should be of interest to scholars of Indian writings in English, Hindi and Panjabi, gender studies, dalit and diaspora studies, postcolonial poetry and to students reading South Asian literature and culture. Philosophy of Gorakhnath: With Goraksha-Vacana-Sangraha
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8120805356; Fifth Reprint; Softcover; New;
This volume contains the essence of the writings and teachings of Mahayogi Gorakhnath. It is well pointed out that while the ultimate object of search is the same for a Yogi and a philosopher, their modes of approach are different, the latter?s being intellectual and the former?s intuitive and spiritual. The task of a Yogi does not require any subtle intellectual speculation or the framing of hypotheses and theories. The quest of the Yogi is direct spiritual experience of truth on a high plane of consciousness. The highest state of Samadhi attained by the Yogi is neither purely subjective nor objective. It transcends both categories and it is really an integrated experience beyond formal description. Such a transcendent state of consciousness is alone called Samadhi. This book analyses in detail the nature of Samadhi Experience. The term ?Experience? is perhaps inaccurate, because in this state of Samadhi, there is no relation between subject and object, the experiencer and the experienced. It is the fulfilment of life as described in the Yogasutras. The Yogi who comes back from Samadhi may not have attained Kaivalya or Moksha, but he is illuminated by his experience. If he assumes the role of a teacher or preacher, he gives expression to his experience in such forms as may be easily intelligible to the people at large. Gorakhnath was a Maha-Yogi. The cult of the Kanphata Yogis is a definite unite within Hinduism, and its study is essential for understanding this phase of the religious life of India. the book is divided into three sections. The first two sections comprising chapters 1 - 13 deal with the cult and history of this sec. the third section containing chapters 14 - 16 opens with the Sanskrit Text Goraksastaka and its English rendering and annotations. The book is fully documented. It has a preface, Glossary, Bibliography, Plates and General Index. This book is an attempt to present a systematic and consistent account of the philosophical background of the spiritual culture associated with the names of Yogi Gorakhnath and other adepts of the natha school.
