Fear of Death and the Bhagavad Gita: A Psycho-Philosophic Analysis
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8182202604; Hardcover; New; New;
Contemporary psychological research suggests that whereas death anxiety is a type of psychopathology, fear of death is almost universal in crisis situations like in severe illness, accidents, child-birth, old age, battlefield experience etc. Concepts of Death Anxiety and Fear of Death have been discussed, with case histories. This book further analyses Lord Krishna?s counsel to Arjuna to bring him out of dejection and refusal to fight. BG 2.7 may be regarded as a seminal verse in the history of religion and philosophy. Clusters of Gita verses dealing with different themes in Lord Krishna?s counselling have been constructed. These Gita Mantra clusters have the stamp of the Holy, being the spoken words of Lord Krishna, the Avatâra. Besides, many of these ideas like of Unattached Action agree with contemporary thinking. This book is expected to be a practical guide for persons suffering from fear of death and dying. It may also direct the reader to a higher spiritual life, for the BG deals with death in a positive manner, as a milestone on the path to immortality. Intellectuals may find the present analysis of the Gita structure around the themes of Death, Work and God as simple and logical. The delivery and reporting of Krishna-Arjuna Dialogue have also been discussed in a rational, logical manner. These Gita verses are non-sectarian and universal in nature and may be read without prejudice by persons of all faiths. Printed Pages: 184. 110057

10909 H.C. Ray; Foreword By L.D. Barnett
The Dynastic History of Northern India (Early Mediaeval Period)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8121503302; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms 25 Cms
The Dynastic History of Northern India: Early Mediaeval Period is a comprehensive account of the history of northern India between the tenth and the twelfth centuries AD. This period, which is characterized by transition and the presence of various regional dynasties, marks the beginning of the end of the Hindu dynasties and the gradual establishment of the early Muslim rule in northern and western India. Prof. Ray has admirably marshalled the details of events of the period to present a continuous history and has bridged the gulf between the Hindu and the early Muslim (Turkish and Afghan) periods. Whenever necessary, Prof. Ray has overstepped chronological limits of the volume in order to present a continuous history of the dynasties and kingdoms. VOLUME I, deals with the period of transition intervening between the decline of the Gurjara-Pratihara empire and the Muslim conquest. It contains detailed enumeration of the dynastic history of Sind, Kashmir, Nepal, Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, the Sahis of Afghanistan and the Punjab, Gahadvalas (Gaharwars) of Varanasi and Kanyakubja, Rastrakutas, and the later Gurjara-Pratiharas of Kanauj. The entire evidence, as available from contemporary epigraphs, coins and literary sources, including also the Persian and the Arabic works, has been fully utilized by Prof. Ray in reconstructing the historical details of the Period. VOLUME II, deals with the history of the Candellas, Haihayas, Kachwahas-Paramaras, Chaulukayas, Chauhans, Tomars and the Guhiltos, as derived from the epigraphic, numismatic and literary evidence, besides the Jaina tradition and the Persian works. Prof. L.D. Barnett, in his foreword to the book, writes, ‘No such comprehensive work in the domain of Indian history has yet appeared, and Dr Ray deserves credit as much for the boldness of his design as for the skill and industry with which he has executed it’. Dr Ray has added to the utility of the work by providing each volume a detailed index, maps, bibliographies, genealogical tables and appendices on certain subjects and aspects requiring separate discussion. Dynamics of Urban Life in Pre-Mughal India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 812150001X; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present study is based on the theory of social surplus which continues to be "the best working hypothesis" to test some of the complex social and economic problems like the one at hand. An attempt has been made to study how social surplus determined changes in society and economy, created class consciousness and shaped the relationship between the producers and the consumers at the urban and rural level as well as gave rise to trade and commerce with all its ancillary consequences. As the surplus was concentrated in the non-agricultural zones with a densely populated and clumped nuclei of houses, the growth of urban centres was its concomitant. These urban centres were primarily a class-based society arising out of the disproportionate distribution of shares of the social surplus. The towns were not merely princely fortified camps superimposed, as Marx remarks, upon economic structure of our society, it had its own dynamism and was closely linked up with its surroundings. It gave a fillip to the emergence of a new ruling class who did not own the land but controlled and enjoyed its fruits. Ideology of this dominant ruling-cum-appropriating class through various mechanisms exercised firm grip over the minds of the people. We have tried to underline this fact within the framework of conflict, adjustment and reconciliation between the ruling class and the people. Connected with these is the question of the extent of cultivable land in our period of study. It has been shown in the present work that the theory of "abundance of land" does not hold water. This has led us to concentrate our arguments on the hypothesis of the intensive nature of cultivation which gave rise to the most difficult task of procurement and distribution of grains to the urban population. How demographic changes brought about mobility among the people and what role the monetary system played in the urban economy and society, have been closely examined here. Delhi has been taken as a case study to highlight the interplay of these forces to illustrate the dynamics of urban life in pre-Mughal India. Printed Pages: 271. 001176

Prehistoric and Historic Archaeology of Gujarat
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121500494; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
In the present work Prehistoric and Historic Archaeology of Gujarat, Dr. Sankalia has presented a critical review of the new discoveries in the prehistoric, proto-historic and historic archaeology of Gujarat since 1947 to the present day. The work is mainly based on his own explorations, for example at Madasa on the Banas. It is an exhaustive study of the Early Stone Age tools, rock-paintings, Buddhist stupas and images as well as temples, their architecture and iconography, and images of Gujarat from c. AD 200 to AD 1300. A special feature of the book is the critical study of the place and personal names from inscriptions of Gujarat. The study shows how Gujarat Mandala was formed in the ninth century, and thus regarded as a separate cultural province. It has taken nearly one thousand years for India to be reorganized into linguistic provinces. The book is sufficiently provided with line diagrams and half-tone illustrations. Wesley's Philosophy of Education for Socio-Spiritual Change
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351481317; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book highlights a comparative study of Wesley’s pedagogy and purpose in relation to Education, with that of Paulo Freire, a 20th century Brazilian activist, philosopher and educator, and a leading proponent of critical pedagogy. While re-examining Wesley's perspective in the light of Freire's critical pedagogy, the book exposes striking similarities between the two. As per their belief, education should not be oppressive, and not to be employed in molding learners in accordance with the exploitative system of the given society. Printed Pages: 277. 110823

Love is not an Emotion
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382146025; First Edition; Softcover; New;
In the book 'Love is not an Emotion', Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has given a completely different perspective on the phenomenon known as love. His words, like 'love is the only thing that you cannot think about, if you think, it ceases to be love, when thinking stops, love begins', have given love a whole new meaning and depth. The author emphasizes that love is not an emotion, not a feeling, not the sudden quickening of the heart on seeing the loved one, not something we fall in and out of and yet it is all of this and much more. The book explores love like never before right from its origins to its forms to our thirst for it, our response to it and more. The book will enlighten the reader's mind and show them a selfless way to love. At the end of the book, one will go through beautiful quotes, from Sri Sris wisdom, which have larger than life meanings. This book comes with CD.Printed Pages: 168. 104732

Cultivating a Daily Meditation
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8185102791; Softcover; New;
The discourses and ensuing discussions were recorded at the time, and later prepared into an edited text of the encounter; the result of which is this book.In his discourses His Holiness touches upon all the essential points of the Buddhadharma, and provides A Clear and simple method to cultivate a daily practice of meditation. He also goes into depth on how we should proceed in the effort to generate both the heart of compassion and the expansive view of emptiness, the Great Void, in our daily life. In addition, the question and answer sessions that follow each talk make for both inspirational and informative reading; being open discussions, they often lead to issues that arise in the course of a layperson's practice.In a sense His Holiness' discourses are principally a commentary on how one should proceed in order to cultivate a daily tantric meditational practice. The visualization used as the basis of the contemplation is that of Buddha and the four great Bodhisattvas: Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, and the female bodhisattva Arya Tara, and explains the symbolic significance of these figures.The picture that emerges from the totality of His Holiness' exposition is that Buddhism, in spite of its being labeled a religion, is mainly a way of life programmed to ensure that we bring some happiness, peace, meaning and purpose into our lives, and that we learn to live in harmony with the environment.Printed Pages: 145. 103619

Dailogue on Universal Responsibility and Education
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8185102953; First Edition; Softcover; New;
His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama a" Title="the-dalai-lama">The Dalai Lama niversal Responsibility and Education is the result of two workshops held in New Delhi between His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and a Group of India scholars, philosophers, teachers and social reformers. The concept of Universal Responsibility, which His Holiness the Dalai Lama often emphasizes the need for in our world, itself arises out of ancient Indian philosophy. Taking this concept as their basis, the participants of the first workshop discuss ways in which we may all work to bring about humanitarian change in our society. The second worship focuses on the role of education in effecting positive change: who the real educators are in society, what type of education is the most beneficial, and how we can ensure that young people grow into disciplined, broad-minded and caring adults in order to secure a positive future for all.The first Book of its kind to be published by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Dialogues on Universal Responsibility and Education offers a fascinating Insight into the philosophical background of India and its transference to modern thought, as well as the practical WISDOM of is Holiness the Dalai Lama.Printed Pages: 156. 103599

The Gelug/Kagyu Tradition of Mahamudra
Snow Lion/Shambhala Publications/TBI; New Delhi, India; 1559390727; Softcover; New;
Mahamudra, the great sealing nature, refers to systems of meditation on both the conventional and ultimate natures of the mind. These have been transmitted through the Kagyu, Sakya, and Gelug traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Within the Gelug, Mahamudra teachings occur in a combined Gelug/Kagyu tradition exemplified in the First Panchen Lama's Root Text for the Precious Gelug/Kagyu Tradition of Mahamudra. The work presented here contains two brilliant commentaries by the Dalai Lama. The first is a teaching based directly on the First Panchen Lama's root text. In the second, His Holiness bases his discussion on the First Panchen Lama's own commentary to this text. The book opens with an overview of Mahamudra by Alexander Berzin that discusses the relation of mind appearances and reality and offers practical techniques for overcoming problems of excessive worry, anxiety, and disturbing thoughts. This treasury of practical instruction contains extensive teachings on the nature of mind, the development of shamata, sutra and tantra levels of Mahamudra, and the compatibility of Dzogchen and Anuttarayoga Tantra. Grammars and Dictionaries of Sanskrit Language
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 1979; 8170810256; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Though the First Edition of the Sanskrit Dictionary was published at Calcutta long long ago, no work has yet appeared to supersede the preface with which it was accompanied. Many contributions towards a History of Sanskrit lecography have indeed, since incidentally been made by Lassen, Roth, Goldstucker, Weber, Hall, Westergaard, Bohtlingk and others; but they are scattered over various works and periodicals, so that a treatise on this branch of Indian Literature, which should reflect the present state of Sanskrit scholarship, still remains a desideratum. The Author himself, who was more competent than any other to accomplish such a task, seems to have deferred it from time to time; for not only did he let the Second Edition (Calcutta : 1832) appear without the Preface, but even long subsequently, when he was asked to allow it to be reprinted for the Journal of the Royal Asiatic society, he declined to give his permission. That, however, he had an intention of re-writing it, in the next Article Grammars and Lexicons of the Sanskrit language. Now both the articles have been published together which will be welcomed by all students of Sanskrit literature who have not the rare first edition of the Dictionary within easy reach.Printed Pages: 156. 103889
