The Dhammapada: A New Translation of the Buddhist Classic with Annotations
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2006; 1590303806; Softcover; New;
The Dhammapada is the most widely read Buddhist scripture in existence, enjoyed by both Buddhists and non-Buddhists. This classic text of teaching verses from the earliest period of Buddhism in India conveys the philosophical and practical foundations of the Buddhist tradition. The text presents two distinct goals for leading a spiritual life: the first is attaining happiness in this life (or in future lives); the second goal is the achievement of spiritual liberation, freedom, absolute peace. Many of the key themes of the verses are presented in dichotomies or pairs, for example, grief and suffering versus joy; developing the mind instead of being negligent about one's mental attitude and conduct; virtuous action versus misconduct; and being truthful versus being deceitful. The purpose of these contrasts is, very simply, to describe the difference between what leads to desirable outcomes and what does not.For centuries, this text has been studied in its original Pali, the canonical language of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. This fresh new translation from Insight Mediation teacher and Pail translator Gil Fronsdal is both highly readable and scholarly authoritative. With extensive explanatory notes, this edition combines a rigorous attention to detail in bringing forth the original text with the translator's personal knowledge of the Buddhist path. It is the first truly accurate and highly readable translation of this text to be published in English. Printed Pages: 192. 111022

Revolution Unending: Afghanistan 1979 to the Present
Hurst & Company; London, UK; 1850657033; First Edition; Paperback; New;
While not underestimating the oft-cited “ethnic factor” in Afghan politics, especially Pashtun dominance, Dorronsoro argues that class and the competition for employment and education are key factors in explaining the country’s past. The 1990s saw a confrontation between the educated and the religious authorities (the ulema) and the marginalisation of the traditional elites. Contrary to the glib optimism of world politicians, this conflict may periodically go into quite phases, but it has not ended. With coalition intervention and the subsequent deposition of the ulema-dominated Taliban government, the educated elites are back in power. However, as Dorronsoro argues, patching up the country by means of short-term ethnic alliances and a new division of the spoils will only perpetuate the schisms in society. He believes, on a very sounbd factual and analytical basis, that the Afghan civil war is set to continue and perhaps worsen over time, despite Western intervention since 9/11. Painting and Photography: At The Jaipur Court
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789385285240; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 31 Cm
From its very inception in 1727, Jaipur has drawn upon the arts to carve a niche for itself. This book tells the story of the visual arts in Jaipur over a period of more than two centuries, highlighting the dual roles of its rulers as patrons who commissioned works from their own court artists, and as collectors who acquired works from elsewhere. In the special case of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, it also encompasses the creation of art, as he was an accomplished amateur photographer.The story begins with paintings from the 18th century, from the period of the founder Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, up to that of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, under whose reign painting in particular flourished. It then captures the excitement of the late 19th century when the camera competed with but also complemented the artist’s brush under Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II. The story concludes with images from the eventful years leading to Indian Independence and its aftermath overseen by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II and Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, bringing us up to the mid-20th century.This volume is the fourth in a new series of publications illustrating the collections of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, City Palace, Jaipur. It accompanies a new gallery dedicated to painting and photography that opened in 2015, showcasing a selection of two hundred paintings and photographs. Specially commissioned chapters on painting and photography in Jaipur expand on the scope of the exhibition and draw together the latest research on the collection. Other books in the series are: Festivals at the Jaipur Court, by Vibhuti Sachdev; Arms & Armour at the Jaipur Court, by Robert Elgood; and Textiles & Garments at the Jaipur Court, by Rahul Jain. EC Competition Law
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0521700752; First Edition; Paperback; New; 175 x 245 Mm
The development of competition law in the EU can be explored through three interrelated perspectives: the extent to which controversies in economic thinking affect the design of the law; how changing political visions about the objectives of competition law have caused shifts in the interpretation of the rules; and the institution in charge of applying the rules. The economic and political debates on competition law show that it is a contested terrain, and the way courts and competition authorities apply the law reflects their responses to the objectives and economics of competition law. By characterising the application of competition law as a continuous response to policy and economic debates, the author casts fresh perspectives on the subject. Written with competition law students in mind, Monti sets out economic concepts in a non-technical manner and explores the policy dimension of competition law by referring to key cases and contemporary policy initiatives. • Non-technical reviews of the relevant economic literature allow all readers to participate fully in the discussion of competition law • Detailed case studies illustrate the operation of rules in specific circumstances, as well as their general application for a fuller understanding • The introduction of new topics for study gives the student the broadest possible perspective on the subject Contents 1. Competition law - policy perspectives; 2. The core values of EC competition law in flux; 3. Economics and competition law; 4. Competition law and public policy; 5. Market power; 6. Abuse of a dominant position: anticompetitive exclusion; 7. Abuse of a dominant position: from competition policy to sector-specific regulation; 8. Merger policy; 9. Oligopoly markets; 10. Distribution agreements; 11. Institutions: who enforces competition law?; 12: Competition law and liberalisation; 13. Conclusions. Printed Pages: 568. 020793

Rock Art of India
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383221066; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
India is one of the three countries having the richest treasures of rock art in the world; other two are Australia and South Africa. A lot of developments have been made in Rock Art Discipline globally during the last twenty-five years, and India played a crucial role in this development, especially in the study of the Pleistocene art through the EIP Project. Hence, there was a strong need of a book which can give a comprehensive picture of Indian rock art in the light of the latest developments in rock art research in India. The present book is an attempt to present Prehistoric Indian rock art with its irresistible beauty and glamour in the light of the latest developments in a scientific way. It presents an outline of how rock art research began and developed in this country. The facts presented and hypotheses proposed on the basis of available evidence can be checked and tested by future researches. There is another important dimension to this issue, the protection and preservation of rock art, which has become such a major concern around the world. The efforts become more effective if the rock art scholars are able to take the support of the general mass. Hence, the book has been presented in such a way that it will not only be useful for rock art specialists but can also meet the general queries and aspirations of the enthusiasts and amateurs who want to know and visit the superbly rich and beautiful Indian rock art. It helps both of them: the specialist to appreciate the importance of public communication and to learn how to achieve it; and the layperson by making overly complex hypotheses and ideas readily accessible. It also highlights the mesmerising beauty of the rock art sites which are great attractions for the persons, especially the youth having adventurous spirit and creative mind.Printed Pages: 256 with 15 figures, 75 colour & 40 b/w illustrations. 102717

The Dreams of Tipu Sultan: Bali: The Sacrifice. Two Plays By Girish Karnad
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0195664760; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This is a collection of two new plays by Girish Karnad, one of India s foremost dramatists and actors. The first play introduces the reader to the visions of one of India s most famous rulers, and the second, to the inner conflict of violence vs. non-violence of a 10th century king faced with his queen s infidelity. The figure of Tipu Sultan has continued to dominate Indian and British imagination for over two centuries, as the endless flow of scholarly works, ballads, plays and novels about his tempestuous life and tragic end testifies. What however is less well known, is that this man, who spent a large part of his life on horseback, maintained a record of his dreams that he kept concealed from his nearest associates. The Dreams of Tipu Sultan, which explores the inner life of this warrior, political visionary and dreamer, was commissioned by the BBC and broadcast in Britain on the fiftieth anniversary of Indian Independence. Bali: The Sacrifice was staged on June 2002 at the L eicester Haymarket Theatre, UK. The king in the 10th cent. Jain myth, upon which the play is based, is devastated to discover that his queen is involved with an elephant-keeper. Circumstances force him to sacrifice a cockerel to the gods in order to avoid further evil befalling the family. But he is a Jain, and non-violence is a fundamental principle of Jain faith. In desperation, he substitutes a bird made of dough, with unexpected results. The myth is less concerned with actual violence than with the morality of substitution, which permits violence that is wider and more subtle by masking its appearance. Printed Pages: 133. 033298

11149 Girish Karnad
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195692365; First Edition; Paperback; New;
In the Mahabharata, King Yayati is cursed to old age in the prime of life for a sexual misdemeanour of his and tries to circumvent the catastrophe by demanding that his son, Pooru, lend him his youth in exchange for the curse. This unusual myth about a parent's aggression against his offspring has inspired some of India's most eminent writers to explore it in fiction, poetry, and drama. Girish Karnad was only twenty-two when he attempted his interpretation in the play, Yayati. What makes his version of the tale so resonant, and startlingly original, is that he rejects the traditional glorification of the son's ''self-sacrifice' and, against a backdrop of lust, jealousy, and racial tensions, foregrounds the tragic choices with which the young prince and his bride are confronted. Angry, energetic, ambitious, and strongly influenced by the tragic vision of the Existentialists, the play immediately established Karnad's reputation as a dramatist in Kannada and launched him on his celebrated career in the Indian theatre. Yayati has been translated into different Indian languages and has continued to be performed all over the country during the half century since it was written. 019727

Local Democracy in India: Interpreting Decentralization
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0761935339; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Despite the considerable literature on the subject and the innumerable experiments at making it work, decentralization remains an enigma today. The basic objective of this large-scale study is to reconstruct the contemporary history of decentralization in India with a view to understanding its impact on democratization. This is done with reference to the experiences of four states—Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh—which represent three generations of panchayats. The author assesses the contribution of these local institutions in expanding the social base of democracy and in deepening the process of democratization at the local level. Using interviews and discussions with all the actors in the field of decentralization, the author presents a comparative and detailed account of panchayat-centric democratic decentralization in these states. In doing so, the original objectives of the policy-makers have been interrogated, and an assessment made of the intentions as compared to the ground reality. Printed Pages: 336. 028595

Balzac: Mirror of Emerging Modern Capitalism
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8173070636; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Balzac remains undisputably one of the greatest novelists produced by mankind. Born on 20 May 1799, he became a self-appointed chronicler of the five decades that followed Napoleon's ascendancy to power, or better to say, the post-Revolution French society when modern capitalism came into existence. He produced an enormous amount of literature of the first rate. In fact, the historic unity of his Human Comedy was woven around his assessment of The Changes in the French society, brought about by the two phases of the Revolution. He demonstrated that no part of the society was static or at rest. The forces unleashed by the Revolution brought in violent movements and changes with great swiftness and all opposition was swept away. These changes were all pervasive affecting the base as well as the superstructure in their entirety. Credit goes to Balzac for depicting them with superb analytical skill. This is why both Marx and Engels advised people to read Balzac's novels rather than arid treatises of scholars. The present Book is a significant contribution to the study of Balzac's works. It takes the reader with Balzac on a journey through the French society during the first half of the nineteenth century. The reader is enabled to discern the changes in various sectors of the economy, society and politics. It shows how Balzac searched for the material basis of each phenomenon witnessed by him in all its historical connections and movements and made an effort to see whether any pattern could be found. His sweep was so vast that seldom anything of consequence slipped away from his grasp. This book is both relevant and timely for the present-day readers in India where since the turn of the 1990s, almost unbridled growth of capitalism in the Context of globalisation has begun and no segment of socio-economic life is untouched. Corruption, criminalisation, the growth of a very powerful underworld, cut-throat competition, and so on have come to be witnessed. It will help them understand what is happening here and why.Printed Pages: 385. 101221

Sociology and Economics of Casteism in India
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8173070369; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Bihar is one of the largest States of India with enormous natural resources and vast manpower. It has a glorious and very ancient history, influencing the course of developments and events not only in India but the world at large. Its soil is fertile, people hardworking, rivers flowing with water throughout the year, its Earth full of valuable and even rare minerals and the climate is congenial, yet its economy has been on the decline and the incidence of poverty on the increase. Its cities, towns and villages unmistakably give the impression of its continuous sliding down. It is one of the most backward States of the country. The administrative machinery seems to have withered away, there is anarchy and chaos, Law and order does not seem to exist, criminalization appears to have enveloped the State and infrastructural facilities are in the ruin. Land reforms have failed to proceed further after the abolition of zamindari system. Educational System is nothing but a scandal and corruption is all pervasive. Casteism is the reigning ideology. This Book looks into the present plight of Bihar on the basis of facts, figures and records. It goes into history, sociology, economy and politics of the State since the establishment of the British Raj. Such a comprehensive study has been attempted for the first time. No other scholar ever attempted such a task in the past with the result that all Other Books and papers and journalistic writings suffer from lopsidedness and, at times, bias and prejudices.Since the two authors have been associated with Bihar and its politics from their student days and have watched, participated in and analyzed Bihar's developments, there is clarity and authenticity which is generally absent in the works of foreign scholars and journalists.Printed Pages: 433. 101225

Psychology & Psychoanalysis (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization, Volume XIII, Part 3)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8187586540; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. Inspite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. Psychology and Psychoanalysis highlights the confluence of Indian and Western perspectives on the explorations of mental processes and behaviour. The volume is an authoritative source on the history and current standing of the new synthesis of idea that is emerging under the concept of Indian Psychology in the beginning of the 21st century. It shows how a traditionally occidental scientific discipline-psychology-can benefit from the rich cultural-historical traditions of all the different social practices and beliefs that have been present in the cultures of the Indian sub-continent for centuries. While occidental psychology has usually overlooked the contributions from outside the Euro-American axis of social power relations, it cannot do that anymore. Psychology in the Occident has been in a conceptual crisis ever since it's beginning, and overcoming that crisis requires constructive innovation from other cultural traditions. The volume attends to some of the major issues central to the contemporary psychological scholarship. It offers perspectives on psychological phenomena and processes and situates them in the Indian context. In particular it brings to the center stage the issues that emanate from the interface of culture and psyche. In this process the volume offers a survey in some of the major domains of psychology to articulate disciplinary developments. The volume provides focused discussions on issue in each of these areas as well as on the emergent concerns. Contributed by leading psychologists in respective fields every chapter in the volume draws upon a theme of disciplinary and cultural significance to offer critical insights. The chapters are devoted to probing psychological themes in the tradition of culturally sensitive human science. In this way the volume fosters the connections between the scientific spirit and cultural intelligibilities. It offers analysis of the shifts and transformations in the discipline and documents scholarship that acknowledges the contributions from indigenous knowledge systems as well as contemporary developments in major subfields. Comprehensive and wide-ranging in scope the volume brings together current perspectives on the manner in which the various facets of human mind, behaviour and experience. It attempts at articulation and integration of Indian thought traditions and modern psychology by engaging in dialogue. By presenting authoritative and exhaustive analyses of substantive processes, debates, and phenomena relating to consciousness, self, identity, emotion, group behaviour, intergroup relations, justice, organization, values, gender, violence, well being and psychological knowledge. Taken together the volume reflects the diversity of research interests and critically evaluates the way psychology has responded to the sociocultural reality by psychologists and psychoanalysts. The banks of the Sindhu river, and the other northern river basins, were the theatre of the Mahabharata war and the cradle of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Anthropology and the New Genetics
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0521671744; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
The growth of ‘new genetics’ has dramatically increased our understanding of health, diseases and the body. Anthropologists argue that these scientific advances have had far-reaching social and cultural implications, radically changing our self-understanding and perception of what it means to be human; that we have become ‘biomedicalized’, fragmented and commodified - redefining our notions of citizenship, social relations, family and identity. This book shows how anthropology can contribute to and challenge the ways we have come to understand genetic issues. Exploring a range of issues and case studies in genetic research, it provides an ethnographic ‘reality-check’, arguing that we must look beyond the ‘gene-centrism’ of genetic codes, family trees and insular populations, to explore their wider cultural, ethical and philosophical implications. Including coverage of the controversial and widely discussed Icelandic Health Sector Database, this accessible survey will be welcomed by graduate students and researchers in social anthropology, human genetics and biotechnology. • Engages with both the scientific advances of genetic research, and their theoretical and social implications • Discusses in detail some of the most important genetic databases and research projects that have emerged since the late 1990s • Provides a fresh and original perspective on how we understand ourselves and our bodies in light of new scientific advances Contents 1. Introduction: ‘as deep as life itself’; 2. Birthmarks become landmarks: 'little worlds in themselves'; 3. Genealogies, relationships and histories; 4. Biobanking: medical records and genetic databases; 5. For whom the cell tolls: bioethics; 6. Biovalue: appropriating genomes; 7. Human variation; 8. Conclusions. The Vital Drop: Communication to Eradicate Polio in India
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 817829866X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Vital Drop: Communication for Polio Eradication in India explains why communication is critical in ensuring the success of public health initiatives. Since a significant outbreak of polio in the country in 2002, several innovative strategies were introduced to ensure better outreach and efficacy of the intensified pulse polio initiative. This book records the communication journey that began in 2002 through important innovations aimed at including segregated and marginalised populations, as well as a very successful mass media campaign featuring cine star Amitabh Bachchan. An important lesson learnt was that for any public health communication to be successful, it had to be data driven. At the same time, it was essential for the initiative to generate data to demonstrate its effectiveness. Communication which was once regarded a `soft science` has now evolved to the extent that it can generate data that is verifiable and drives the intervention further. Key features of the book include: - It describes the variety of communication initiatives undertaken to reach out to India`s large, diverse, segregated and mobile populations. - It highlights the emphasis on evidence-both social and epidemiological-and the choices, approaches and course corrections in determining communication interventions. - It outlines the importance of the sophisticated surveillance and a frontline communication network. In Times of Siege
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143032429; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13.5 Cms x 21 Cms
New Delhi, in the year 2000. Staff meetings, lesson modules, a half-hearted little affair with a colleague—this is the bland but comfortable life of Shiv Murthy, a history teacher in an open university. But disruption and change are on their way—an outspoken young woman with a broken knee comes into his life and turns it upside-down; then Hindu zealots attack his writings on Basava, the reformer-poet. With fundamentalism landing on his own doorstep, Shiv discovers that the ideas he has inherited—about history, nations and patriots—are shrinking day by day. And the time of siege is not exclusively Indian; prejudice speaks different languages but has the same destructive message: `Only trust those of your kind.' With love, lust and a perverted nationalism at his heels, Shiv is forced to confront the demands of his times and choose a direction for the future. But first, he must come to terms with his own incomplete past, his fears, and his obsession with a woman who will give him the strength he seeks. Printed Pages: 224. 004671

Fugitive Histories
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2009; 0670082171; Softcover; New;
Githa Hariharan's fiction is wonderful— full of subtleties and humour and tenderness'— Michael Ondaatje Mala's home in Delhi is empty, save for a lifetime of sketches left behind by her late husband Asad and the memories they conjure. Sifting through them on restless afternoons and sleepless nights, Mala summons ghosts from her childhood, relives the heady days of love and optimism when Asad and she robustly defied social conventions to build a life together— and struggles to understand how events far removed could so easily snatch away the certainties they had always taken for granted. As their story unfolds, others emerge: Of Sara, Mala and Asad's daughter, who, unable to commit to a cause that will renew her faith in her parents' ideals and her own, embarks on a search for purpose that brings her from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, the venue of recent carnage. Of Yasmin, whom Sara meets across a lately created 'border', a survivor of mayhem secretly dreaming of college and the miraculous return of her missing brother, Akbar, as she navigates menacing by-lanes to reach her school safely every day. Of innumerable other lives trapped in limbo— some caught in a mesh of memory, anguish and hate, others seeking release in private dreams and valiant hopes. Marked by an astonishing clarity of observation and deep compassion, Fugitive Histories exposes the legacy of prejudice that, sometimes insidiously, sometimes perceptibly, continues to affect disparate lives in present-day India. In prose that is at once elegant, playful and startlingly inventive, Githa Hariharan portrays with remarkable precision the web of human connections that binds as much as it divides.Printed Pages: 256. 103451

Art and Architecture: Remains in the Western Terai Region of Nepal
Adroit; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8187392355; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
Terai region of Lumbini Zone situated between Narayani and Rapti rivers is an important site for the Buddhist as well as Archaeologist. This region was associated with the Sakyas and Koliya at Kapilvastu and Ramagrama (Devadaha) respectively in ancient period. Lumbini, the birth place of Lord Buddha, Kapilvastu, capital town of Sakyas, Ramagrama (Devadaha), maternal house of Buddha, and other ancient archaeological sites are located in this region. This book throws light on history, archaeological sites, identification of ancient Buddhist sites, especially Lumbini, Kapilvastu and Ramagrama, art, architecture and touristic importance of the region. The book contains geography and history of the region in brief and excavated and explored sites from where a number of art-remains has been obtained in course of archaeological activities. In the fourth chapter various Buddhist texts, excavated reports, versions of eminent scholars and Chinese account have been discussed to identify the ancient capital town of Kapilvastu. The evidences suggested that this region along with some portion of North-India, including Ganawaria and Piparahawa, had been a part of the ancient Kapilvastu. In the fifth chapter, the art-remains, viz. stone sculptures, other stone objects, humans and animals terracotta figurines, other terracotta objects, seals and sealings, coins, potteries etc. are incorporated. The result of the analysis of terracotta figurines has been incorporated here, highlighting the origin, typology and stylistic evolution of the principal forms, their techniques and contexts. This helps us to place the changing art forms and style from the pre-Mauryan to Pala-Sena periods in proper perspective. The earliest figurines are related to the female group. Terracotta trading and industries associated with them were similar to the contemporaneous sites in North-India, specially Hastinapur, Ahichchhatra, Kausambi, Taxila, Sohagaura and Arikamedu. On the basis of these sites relative dating has been adopted in the region. Pottery of various traditions, e.g. P.G.W., N.B.P. and Red wares were also discovered which helped us in fixing the chronology. The book goes into a deep study of archaeological sites and art-remains which helps for preservation and conservation to the authorities in future. Photographs, drawings and maps have been included to make the volume more authentic, informative and attractive. Printed Pages: 523. 007744

Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Under-Rated Organ
Speaking Tiger Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789385288616; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain or our heart, yet we know very little about how it works. In Gut, Giulia Enders shows that rather than the utilitarian and—let’s be honest—somewhat embarrassing body part we imagine it to be, it is one of the most complex, important, and even miraculous parts of our anatomy. And scientists are only just discovering quite how much it has to offer; new research shows that gut bacteria can play a role in everything from obesity and allergies to Alzheimer’s.Beginning with the personal experience of illness that inspired her research, and going on to explain everything from the basics of nutrient absorption to the latest science linking bowel bacteria with depression, Enders has written an entertaining, informative health handbook. Gut definitely hows that we can all benefit from getting to know the wondrous world of our inner workings. In this charming book, young scientist Giulia Enders takes us on a fascinating tour of our insides. Her message is simple—if we treat our gut well, it will treat us well in return. But how do we do that? And why do we need to? Find out in this surprising, and surprisingly funny, exploration of the least understood of our organs.Printed Pages: 272. 103373

Benoy Kumar Sarkar and Italy: Culture, Politics and Economic Ideology
Italian Embassy Cultural Centre; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8121506492; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 14 Cms x 21 Cms
This book presents two lectures on Benoy Kumar Sarkar (1887-1949). Professor of Economics at the University of Calcutta and one of the pioneers of Sociology in India. Benoy Kumar Sarkar spent nearly eleven years abroad from 1914 to 1925. He was to develop an original international perspective in the comparative analysis of social, political and economic phenomena. The first lecture discusses the philosophical dimensions of his researches. The second lecture, 'Benoy Kumar Sarkar and Italy', gives the book its title. B.K. Sarkar's analysis is focused on Italy's culture and society particularly after his second cycle of travels abroad (1929-31). While in Italy, in fact, he worked out the project of an Italo-Indian Institute for the economic cooperation, which met the opposition of some sections of the Italian bureaucracy. The aim of this book is to shed light on B.K. Sarkar's international perspective and on his activities in Italy. The reconstruction of the controversy on the Italo-Indian Institute is based on Italian archival sources, brought to the Indian reader's notice for the first time. Printed Pages: 154. 018986

The Theory and Practice of the Mandala: With Special Reference to the Modern Psychology of the Unconscious
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8178223945; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This intriguing, thought-provoking study by one of the world's leading authorities on the subject examines the basic doctrine behind the theory and practice of the Mandala in India and Tibet, by both Hindus and Buddhists. "As a whole," as the author says in his Preface, "the spiritual background is the same: ...the yearning to find out a way from time to eternity, to help the primeval consciousness... to recover its integrity." Individual chapters consider the doctrinal basis of the mandala, the mandala as a means of reintegration, the symbolism of the mandala and its various parts, the liturgy of the mandala, and the mandala in the human body. Of special interest to students of Eastern philosophy and art, this volume will also fascinate New Agers and anyone interested in the symbols and psychology of Asian cultures.Printed Pages: 155. 102418
