Games of life and Land: A Comparative Analysis of the Origins of True Enclaves in South and Central Asia, their Impacts on Public Policy, and Factors Prolonging their Existence
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649006; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Previous works discussing the enclaves shared between India and Bangladesh, or the enclaves of Central Asia, have centered primarily on their historical origins and on their inhabitants' living conditions. This monograph briefly reviews these works while making a comparison between the enclaves of the two regions. It then adds to the existing literature with an argument that international enclaves stymie the expressed and assumed development interests of both India and Kyrgyzstan. Finally, it considers potential explanations for the continued existence of enclaves in both South and Central Asia, despite the harm these geographical features surely cause for their 'owning' states and peoples. The work follows research conducted by the author as a Visiting Research Scholar at the Institute of Foreign Policy Studies at the University of Calcutta, and precedes a separate comprehensive study of public service delivery in the Kyrgyz exclave village Barak conducted by the author with the support of the United Nations Development Programme later in 2013.Printed Pages: 90. 104279

Meditations on the Lower Tantras
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8186470131; Softcover; New;
The Collected Works of most Tibetan Lamas are adorned by a type of literature called Lha Drub or "Deity Accomplishment"; Yidam Drub-Khor or "Concerning the Meditational Deity Practices"; and also Drub-thab-Kun-du or "Collection of Sadhanas." These deal with the various meditations related to the four (or six) Tantra categories. It is from such sources in the Collected Works of the Dalai Lamas that the materials for this work have been drawn.This work entitled Meditations on the Lower Tantras from the Collected Works of the Dalai Lamas makes no attempt to deal with the philosophical aspects of the Lower Tantras. Rather, its aim is simply to present a range of Meditation manuals from the first stage of these systems. It should be noted here that most practitioners of the Higher Tantras also practice the Lower Tantras either from time to time or as a lifetime daily meditational endeavor. The First Dalai Lama, for example, a renowned practitioner of the Kalachakra Tantra, was even more famous for his applications to the Tara and Amitayus systems. Almost every Tibetan yogi today practices a daily sadhana of one or more of the Lower Tantra deities dealt with within the covers of this work.Printed Pages: 150. 103616

Vivadaratnakara of Candesvara: Law of Partition and Inheritance
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121200121; Hardcover; New; New;
The Vivadaratnakara of Candesvara Thakkure (14th cent.) is one of the most comprehensive works on the substantive portion of Hindu Law and is respected by the Mithila School as a most authoritative treatise. The peculiar feature of the work is that it cites almost all the Codes of the sages, bearing on a particular subject and puts them in such an order that the various rules of law appear from the Texts themselves in their logical sequence. As usual, the Vivadaratnakara contains an important section on Dayabhaga, i.e. Laws on inheritance and succession. In this section The Author who had been the Minister of Justice in the Court of a King of Mithila and a renowned jurist of his time, defines the term daya i.e. inheritance and judges the interests of different grades of successors. His classification of different types of ‘sons’ and their rights on the Property of their deceased Father is of great interest. The subject of the womens ’ right on inherited property has been treated by the author with an unbiased and progressive approach. The work had therefore, been held in great esteem not only by the Mithila school but also by early British jurists and law-makers in India. The present volume contains an accurately edited text of the Dayabhaga portion of the Vivadaratnakara and an English translation prepared by two versatile scholars and practicing advocates of the Calcutta High Court in the late nineteenth Century. The Translation is quite Illuminating and improves, to a great extent, on earlier translations. It removes many misconceptions and misinterpretations of the earlier law writers of British India. An exhaustive introduction presents a brief History of the development of Hindu law codes in General and of the laws of inheritance and succession in particular, and fully brings out the basic Philosophy of Hindu law.Printed Pages: 254. 105656

Agricultural Development, Rural Institutions, and Economic Policy: Essays for A. Vaidyanathan
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195698541; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Where does India stand in terms of social and economic development goals? Are we at a crossroad today when it comes to economic development? With liberalization and globalization as the backdrop, this timely book discusses the most recent advances and changes in agriculture, rural transformation, and institutional development in India. It emphasizes that public policy and decentralized local institutions have to move in tandem to ensure sustainable and deliverable agricultural development. The contributors support inclusive strategies of development, emphasize the need for better governance and decentralization in the development process, and support entry of market pricing and user charges in sectoral planning and management. The book is divided into sub-themes with significant policy implications—micro-credit policies, water resources, farm and non-farm employment, and institutions and governance. It calls for a reversal in the thinking on the planning process, that is, creation of institutions ahead of sectoral planning and balancing the sectoral growth priorities to meet social and regional requirements. 026182

Adjudication in Religious Family Laws: Cultural Accommodation, Legal Pluralism, and Gender Equality in India
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 1107023890; Hardcover; New; New;
This book argues that the shared adjudication model in which the state splits its adjudicative authority with religious groups and other societal sources in the regulation of marriage can potentially balance cultural rights and gender equality. In this model the civic and religious sources of legal authority construct transmit and communicate heterogeneous notions of the conjugal family gender relations and religious membership within the interstices of state and society. In so doing they fracture the homogenized religious identities grounded in hierarchical gender relations within the conjugal family. The shared adjudication model facilitates diversity as it allows the construction of hybrid religious identities creates fissures in ossified group boundaries and provides institutional spaces for ongoing intersocietal dialogue. This pluralized legal sphere governed by ideologically diverse legal actors can thus increase gender equality and individual and collective legal mobilization by women effects institutional change.Printed Pages: 438 with 4 b/w illustrations & 4 Tables. 101473

Shopping for Bombs: Nuclear Proliferation, Global Insecurity and the Rise and Fall of the A.Q. Khan Network
Hurst & Company; London, UK; 1850658269; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
A.Q. Khan was the world's leading black market dealer in nuclear technology, described by a former CIA Director as 'at least as dangerous as Osama Bin Laden'. A hero in Pakistan and revered as the Father of the Bomb, Khna built a global clandestine network that sold the most closely guarded nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya. The book provides a riveting, inside story of the rise and fall of A.Q. Khan and his role in the devastating spread of nuclear technology over the last thirty years. Drawing on exclusive interviews with key players in Islamabad, London and Washington, as well as with members of Khan's own network, BBC journalist Gordon Corera paints a truly unsettling picture of the ultimate arms bazaar, Corera reveals how Khan operated within a world of shadowy deals among rogue states and how his privileged position in Pakistan provided him with the protection to build his unique and deadly business empire. It explains why and how he was able to operate so freely for so many years. The book provides new insight into Iran's nuclear ambitions and how close Tehran may be to the bomb. In addition, the book contains information on how the CIA and MI6 penetrated Khan's network, how the US and UK ultimately broke Khan's ring, and how they persuaded President Musharaff to arrest a national hero. The book also provides the first detailed account of the high-wire dealings with Muammar Gadaffi which led to Libya's renunciation of nuclear weapons and which played a key role in Khan's downfall. The Religious Drama: An Art of the Church (Beginning to 17th Century) (Christian Classics Revived: 5)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480075; Reprinted; Hardcover; New; New;
This classical on ageless Christian Drama aims to present periods when actually dramatic performances or `Religious Drama' were used to teach Biblical and Hagiographical subjects to the general public. This short sketch of one of the arts of Christian Church presents Origin, History, and Development on the subject with Illustrations and Bibliography; in chronological order.Since beginning the significance of some special Christian festivals was shown through these performances. Then came up the Liturgical Drama in the Middle Ages (12th & 13th centuries). During this phase, plays were acted within or near the Church, based on stories from the Bible and of the Saints. The language of the Liturgical Drama was Latin, and the music was also used in the form of incidental dance and processional tunes. Eventually, the plays came under secular sponsorship and began to be presented outside the Church; the local populace became involved across whole of Europe. Plays were then presented by the Christian Communities in the vernaculars, based on stories from the Bible. By the 13th century Miracle Plays, also called as Saints' Plays, came into picture. These plays used to present, a real and fictitious account of the life, miracles, or martyrdom of a Saint. Later, they were banned by Henry VIII in the mid-16th century.Morality Plays (15th & 16th centuries) were an allegorical drama, wherein characters personify moral qualities (such as charity or vice) or abstractions (such as death or youth) thereby teaching moral lessons. However, Interludes were referred as dramatic scenes presented usually with music and singing in between of a play when a little fun was required for enlivening the audience after a serious scene. The phase of Elizabethan Drama (late 15th & 16th centuries) covered the works of Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. It was during this time frame that permanent theaters were built.During the early 17th century Catholic Church splitted up and many new Christian organizations called Protestants were formed. As a result a new Protestant religion called Puritans evolved. The Puritans believed that man must follow the Bible exactly and try to communicate directly with God. In order to communicate with God there had to be no distractions from their religion. Puritans rather continued to immerse themselves in their belief by avoiding any such distractions. This resulted in the end of `Religious Drama' but the Author hinted at its revival during the years rolled by. This living book of Biblical record covers subjects like Art, History, Poetry, Anthropology, Dramaturgy, Christianity, and Biographical narratives of various Saints; and is meant for Historians, Artists, Litterateurs, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Students and Researchers.Mr. Gordon Crosse of New College, Oxford and Lincoln's Inn, authored, co-authored and edited many books including Shakespearean Playgoing, 1890-1952; A Dictionary of English Church History; and Fifty Years of Shakespearean Playgoing.Printed Pages: 200. 106429

Provincial Politics and Indian Nationalism: Bombay and the Indian National Congress, 1880-1915
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521051460; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This is a study of the Indian National Congress, the first political association to approach the government of India at an all-India level. The Congress became the most important national party in twentieth century India, and the whole history of the freedom movement is closely bound up with its fortunes. National politics, however, were influenced by regional and local affairs. In the early twentieth century the Indian Congress was split between the ‘Moderates’ and the ‘Extremists’. Dr Johnson argues that this division was closely related to existing rivalries between politicians in the provinces, and that provincial interests determined their national point of view. Because the early Congress depended so much for its regular organisation on men from Bombay, party lines in western India were particularly important in determining the course of the struggles between the parties in the National Congress. The unpublished letters and diaries of the protagonists in these disputes have enabled Dr Johnson to examine this theme in detail. This is the first book to stress the need for study of regional and local politics as an integral part of the history of the Congress. Its revelation of the complex connections between parochial, provincial and all India politics adds a new dimension to our understanding of nationalism in South Asia.
