Agricultural Problems in Ethiopia
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121200784; Hardcover; New; New;
Despite its long History of self-sufficiency, Ethiopia has experienced Crop failures repeatedly during the last two decades. Famine of 1972-73 led to the Death of hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians. It has been estimated that about one-fifth of the Population of Wollo province had died from starvation. In 1984, the Country again underwent a prolonged period of drought and famine with a severity that approached that of 1972-73. It affected about one-fourth of the total population. With the continuous fall in Agricultural output in more recent years, it is likely that another human tragedy of vast proportion may occur.It is said that the Poor performance of Agriculture was mainly due to drought which affected agricultural sector adversely. With drought the area under Irrigation had been reduced. But the Loss of so many lives in Ethiopia was not simply due to lack of rainfall. Other factors besides drought too have contributed to the lethal proportions of the famine. The main aim of this book is to assess the performance and strategies followed for the development of the agricultural sector during the pre and post Revolutionary periods and pinpoint various constraints to its development.Printed Pages: 264. 105661

The Rani of Jhansi: Gender, History and Fable in India
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 1107042801; Hardcover; New; New;
Rani Lakshmi Bai is an iconic figure of the nationalist movement in India. Her fight against the imperialist power has a significant place in the cultural and feminist history of South Asia. She is considered not only a heroine and a great warrior but also a protector of her people in Jhansi. Her pictures on horseback with her son tied to her back and a sword in one hand represent her as an embodiment of feminine power or Shakti. This book uses fictional cinematic and popular representations of the Rani to analyze the convergence of colonial and postcolonial literary historical sexual and cultural imperatives in the figure of this legendary woman. This book also extends the discussion to what constitutes the gendered subaltern historical archive. By analyzing a range of literary and cinematic texts produced between 1857 and 2007 it tries to understand the various agendas that are at stake in the use of the Rani as a figure of nationalist Indian history and imperial British narrative. There is also an attempt to compare representations of the Rani in both these contexts. Endorsements The author brilliantly reveals how the rule of colonial and postcolonial difference forecloses the possibility of archival or historical ‘settling’ of the figure of the Indian woman. This is an essential reading for anyone interested in the ‘woman question’ one that resonates in both historical and contemporary debates of representation and politics. — Inderpal Grewal Yale University Singh provides a compelling genealogy of production under colonial conditions that works its way through an impressive array of archives and genres from the aesthetic experiments of both British and Indian cultural producers to the more recuperative cultural efforts of postcolonial feminists and/or historians. — Anjali Arondekar University of California Santa Cruz It is one of the first works in the arena of South Asian Studies to provide a feminist account of a rebellion against empire; a theme totally unique and much needed in explicating India’s complex relationship to Britain. Moreover the author’s intellectual gambit of bypassing numerous routine historico-political accounts that are regurgitated to bolster colonial and/or postcolonial theses is noteworthy. — Gita Rajan Fairfield University It is a rebellious book in its own way. Eschewing the ‘historical’ Rani of Jhansi in favor of the Rani of literature fable folk history film and rumor Singh undertakes an extraordinary engagement with this pivotal figure of the politics and aesthetics of the ‘colonial encounter.’ The book takes as central motifs the sexual configurations of ‘India’ through the metaphor of the Rani. —Christian Lee Novetzke University of Washington.Printed Pages: 202. 101428

The South Asia Story: The First Sixty Years of US Relations with India and Pakistan
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8132101219; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book deals with the complex and changing U.S. relations with India and Pakistan in the sixty years since World War II. It carries a series of brief sketches on how twelve U.S. presidents, starting with Franklin Roosevelt, perceived and dealt with South Asia. The author proposes that though there are broad historical patterns in which the policies and decisions of these American presidents can be classified, yet their unique personalities and ideological predispositions also played a role in the political choices they made. Since none of them ever had any substantial experience with South Asia prior to assuming office, probing the reasons for their preferences and decisions is an enlightening and interesting exercise. With the unfolding of the South Asia policies of the new U.S. President, Barrack Obama, this book will provide the much needed background study to the readers. Printed Pages: 136. 033019

Poisonous Plants of Livestock
Chaukhamba Sahitya/ Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The preparation of this handbook was undertaken because of the great lack of readily available and reliable information on the subject in English scientific literature. Many of the facts were known to A Few interested persons, but many Others were so scattered here and there in technical reports and journals that they were scarcely known even to expert chemists and botanists. The bringing of this information together in some sort of order has involved considerable labour extending over several years, but if the volume be found helpful to those for whose use it has been prepared I shall feel more than gratified. That the subject is of importance is fully realised by farmers and veterinary surgeons alike, for the annual loss of stock due to poisonous plants, though not ascertainable, is undoubtedly considerable. It was felt that notes on mechanical injury caused by plants and on the influence of plants and on milk might usefully be included, as in some degree related to poisoning; this has the reform been done. One the other hand, a number of cultivated plants (e.g. Rhus, Wistaria) which are poisonous have not been included because exotic and hardly likely to be eaten by stock. Fungi generally also find no place in the volume, as they are sufficiently extensive to deserve a volume to themselves, and are far less readily identified than flowering plants. The dividing line between plants, which are actually poisonous, and those which are only suspected is far from clear, but a division was considered desirable for the convenience of the reader, and an endeavour has been made to give a sound but brief statement as to the present information on plants poisonous to live stock, with symptoms, toxic principles, and a list of the more important references to the bibliography in relation to each plant included.Printed Pages: 125. 100983

T.R.V. Murti: (The Builders of Indian Philosophy Series Gen. Ed. R. Balasubramanian)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121510775; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
T.R.V. Murti was an original and leading thinker among the Indian philosophers of the twentieth century. He had a brilliant philosophical mind, a love of analysis and argument, and a respect for texts, especially the ones with which he disagreed, as seen in his most important book, The Central Philosophy of Buddhism. With both traditional “Shastri” training and a Western style Ph.D., Murti was able to bring both strengths to his writing and teaching. Murti knew everything by heart, all the Sutra texts, the Upanisads and other philosophical classics, Panini’s grammar, and Patanjali’s “Great Commentary” and other core texts. Upon that foundation, he evaluated doctrines and ideas. Though a philosopher of the classical type, he was also alive to the latest philosophical currents of his day and effectively related the wisdom of traditional teaching to the contemporary questions. It was this last quality that made him a most sought after teacher by students from around the world. Murti spoke with such eloquence and authority that few would dare to interrupt him. He represented the best of Indian philosophical tradition to the world through his teaching at places such as Oxford, Copenhagen, Harvard, Hawaii, and McMaster University in Canada. This book offers an overview and assessment of Murti’s scholarship on Buddhism in its Brahmanical context, Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism, Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of spirit. The book begins with a biography of Murti and a discussion of the philosophical influences upon him. Also included is a complete list of Murti’s writings. Printed Pages: 148. 000362

Thinking and Destiny: The Descent of Man, The Eternal Order of Progression
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8120817834; Hardcover; New; New;
In Thinking and Destiny, something new, although older than time, is now made known to the world--about Consciousness. The information is largely about the makeup of the human, where man comes from, what becomes of him; it explains what thinking is; it tells how a thought is created, and how thoughts are exteriorized into acts, objects and events, and how they make his destiny. Destiny is thus shown to be self-determined by thinking; and the process of re-existence and the after-death states are told in detail. A single reading of any one chapter of Thinking and Destiny brings rich rewards in new understanding of life`s puzzling mysteries. To read the entire book is to come nearer to knowledge of one`s destiny and how to shape it than is possible through study of anything previously written in the English language. Both the casually curious glancer at books and the most avid seeker for knowledge will be intrigued by the index, which lists more than 400 subjects in Thinking and Destiny, and by the fifteen chapter headings in the Table of Contents, which identify the 156 sections. The Foreword contains the only pages in which Mr. Percival uses the first personal pronoun. Here he relates some of the amazing experiences through which he was able to grasp the knowledge he transmits, and to acquire the ability to do so.Printed Pages: 1044. 102210

A White Trail: A Journey Into the heart of Pakistan religious minorities
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789383260232; Softcover; New;
The formation of Pakistan and the search for an Islamic identity are inextricably interlinked, says journalist Haroon Khalid. Of the wider issue of global politics, he reasons, the rise of Islamic fundamentalism has been a side effect. And religious intolerance places the minority communities of the country in a precarious position.They have to come to terms with a rapidly changing situation. A White Trail is an ethnographic study of these communities and the changes they are having to face. At a time when almost all accounts of religious minorities in the country focus on the persecution and discrimination they experience, A White Trail delves deeper into their lives, using the occasion of religious festivals to gain a deeper insight into the psyche of Pakistani Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Zoroastrians and Bahais. It seeks to understand, through the oral testimonies of the members of these communities, larger socio-political issues arising from the situation.A White Trail originally began as a series of newspaper articles written by Lahore – based Haroon Khalid for Pakistans widely – circulated weekly, The Friday Times. 109606

Muslim Political Thought and Administration
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8121501962; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This is the most comprehensive study of the political theories of Muslim thinkers. His survey of Muslim political thought begins with the Ideal State as depicted in the Quran, and provides an insight not only into the working of the political mind of some of the most eminent Muslim thinkers but also gives a running commentary on the working of the political institutions under which they lived in order to find out whether there was any link between their political ideas and the atmosphere in which they flourished. Since it was first published in 1942, the learned author has revised it several times, including a mass of new data and a number of explanatory notes in order to make the book more comprehensive, instructive and equally useful to the student and the scholar. This scholarly work is, in fact, interesting and thought provoking. Printed Pages: 228. 017189

No One Would Listen: A True Financial Thriller
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8126527722; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This is the story of Harry Markopolos, the whistleblower who discovered that crimes against investors were being committed by Bernie Madoff, whose Ponzi Scheme would ultimately become the biggest and longest-running financial investment fraud in history. Madoff's impact, both financially on individuals and institutions, continues to send shockwaves across the financial system and represents a major failure to investigate by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the nation's top market copy. The unraveling of the Madoff investment fund will go down as the crowning story of an era that has ended with the most troubled, turbulent, and uncertain global economy. How Madoff was enabled, by investors and fiduciaries alike, is nothing short of breath-taking and spell-binding. But how Madoff was allowed to operate by the SEC, despite repeated written and verbal warnings by whistleblower Harry Markopolos, is something that can only be told Harry himself and his team of financial sleuths.Printed Pages: 368. 104762

Madhyamikologists, the author essays in this work the task of demonstrating with a wealth of documentation that it is difficult to resist the conclusion that, far from being an absolutism or Absolutistic Monism as commonly heald in responsible circles today, Madhyamika philosophy, styled Sunyavada, is as heald by the classics, Universal, Total, or Absolute Nihilism/Illusionism, indeed so Aabsolute a Nihilism/Illusionism that it leaves absolutely no room for religion and mysticism to which the Madhyamikas do in their a-philosophical mood feel committed, a fact brought into focus by the author for the first time.Printed Pages: 183. 102383

Indian Foreign Policy: An Overview
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125063145; Hardcover; New; New;
India now plays an important role on the global stage. Its political clout has increased, along with its economic and military growth. Considered a balancing power in the Asia-Pacific region, it is also seen as a democratic ally in the West, even as it challenges it on issues such as non-proliferation or global trade. India’s rise in global politics has confounded policy-makers and observers alike. However, while India is more confident of its capabilities than in the past, it remains unsure of its role in the world.This book presents an overview of Indian foreign policy today. It looks at the range of factors shaping India’s foreign policy, from domestic politics to material capabilities, as well as India’s relations with the world and neighbouring countries. Key global issues, such as India’s role in international and regional organizations, nuclear proliferation, democracy, or climate change, are also discussed. In addition, “snapshots” focus on important issues such as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) grouping and terrorism.Written by an expert in the field, Indian Foreign Policy will be a key resource for scholars and students studying Indian politics, comparative international relations, Asian politics, as well as globalization. Radha: From Gopi to Goddess
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383098064; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In tracing the evolution of Radha from that of a gopi to a goddess one traverses not only a span of several centuries, but travels through cultural divides, political dynasties and philosophical debates. She occupies a space which moves from the aesthetics of shringara rasa to the theology of shringara bhakti, from the madhurya of Pushtimarg Vaishnavism to the prema of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, taking in its stride the philosophies of Advaita and Dvaita, the traditions of Shakti and Shakta, she takes us from the devotional poetry of Bhaktikal to the courtly poetry of Ritikal and even beyond to the modern poetry of Adhunikkal. Radha is both kamini and ramani, desirable and beautiful and through her persona we understand the role of kama or desire in the workings of the human mind and especially in the aesthetics of shringara, she is both a gopi and a nayika and through her we feel the presence of Krishna in Vrindavana and the opulence of the Vaishnava Rajput courts, she is a devi in the temples of the Gaudiyas and through her we are able to worship Krishna, and finally she is even a kalankini or the defiled one and through her we are privy to the folk literature of Bengal and modern middle class psychology of the bhadralok. Radha: From Gopi to Goddess portrays in poetry and painting, dance and drama, sculpture and icon, songs and stories how Radha occupies a special place in sociology and psychology, aesthetics and theology. Parijata Haran: Kusna Steals the Parijata
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608040; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Krishna Steals the Parijata (Parijataharana) is a collection of a few accounts, edited by Harsha V. Dehejia, on Krishna forcibly taking away Parijata from Indra, which finds expression through the paintings of different kalams. Christopher R. Austin relates this event to the citations and narrations in Mahabharata and Harivamsha, wherein the focus is on Krishna’s effort to appease his perturbed wife Satyabhama, by fulfilling her desire to have Parijata from Indra’s abode. Mahendra Kumar Mishra approaches this incident from Sarala Mahabharata angle. Here the narrative and episode are little different though the centre theme and characters remain the same. The third narrative is in Hindi by Narmada Prasad Upadyaya. He approaches this story from a different viewpoint that by forcibly taking away the Parijata tree from Indraloka, Krishna broke Indra’s Himalayan pride. The main characters in the episode are same here too: Krishna, Indra and Satyabhama. In the final article, Harsha V. Dehejia provides a visual narrative account of the event. The story looks almost similar to that of Austin with little more narration and a few additional characters. The sequentially given paintings tell the story faster than the literature. In a nutshell the book is an exemplar attempt to visually covey a well-known, well-rooted story where Krishna is the central character. Printed Pages: 52 with 54 coloure illustrations. 100302

Parul: A Love Story
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174369597; Hardcover; New; New;
Praful is a Professor, a dyed-in-the-wool academic who is shaped by the life-denying philosophy of Shankara’s Advaita Vedanta. Parul, on the other hand, is a sensual, earthy woman who believes in the veracity of love and the reality of the many beautiful things that life offers. A chance meeting between the two leads not only to a romantic relationship spread over eleven purnimas, but becomes a dialogue between two philosophical systems, the Advaita of Shankara and the Madhurya of the Bhagvata Purana. As romantic moments between the two unfold, intellectuality interacts with sensuality, questioning the validity of each, and as Chaitra moves to Magh, a transformation takes place. As Harsha Dehejia weaves this romantic story, where meetings by the Parijataka and conversations underneath the Champa, are not only moments of shringara but introspections on the meaning of life, we hear and feel the sensuality of love as it merges seamlessly with the intellectuality of a philosophic discourse. In this heart-throbbing romantic relationship, there is the spiritual quest of ultimate reality along with the pleasures of the sound of the wind and the song of a bird. Metaphysical thoughts and tender feelings, evocative colours and resonant sounds, intoxicating aromas and patterned textures, myths and metaphors, intermingle in the hushed conversations of two people in love. He wrote emotionally-intensive love songs in Maithili, for the queens of Shiva Simha, his patron, and the common folk. Though drawn inspiration from Jayadeva, more than him, Vidyapati presents in his poetry a rare, tender and sensitive understanding of Radha’s psyche. In his love songs Radha, not Krishna, is in the centre stage and through his nayika Vidyapati is reaching out to each and every woman in Mithila. Vidyapati presents his songs from a woman’s heart, and describes his nayika’s slowly awakening youth, her sensuous beauty, her coyish charm, her naïve innocence, her surrender to love and her anguish on being neglected. She is invariably sensual, spiritual, physical and emotional. Though she did not inspire painters of the time, she ruled the hearts of the people of Mithila. Vidyapati’s love songs are written in honeyed words and are sung with mellifluous notes in homes, fields, chowks and havelis, across eastern India. And thus he still rules their heart.This portfolio, based on the ten love songs of Vidyapati, presents lovely paintings on the varied love moods of Radha, the love queen. In doing so, different artists have displayed their dexterity in Jaipur, Caurapancashika, late Mughal, Manaku, Kishangarh, Jain, Kangra and Basohli styles.Printed Pages: 16 Leaves. 100343

Love Songs of Narsinh Mehta
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608032; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Love Songs of Narsinh Mehta is a commentary on Narsinh Mehta’s love songs. Narsinh (1408-65), a Vaishnava bhakti poet of medieval India, is considered as the adi-kavi of Gujarat. He is also regarded as a shringara kavi, a poet of romance. The quintessence of his bhakti is prem and his prem has inherent bhakti, and therefore his poetry is regarded as shringara bhakti kavya. Essentially shringara is the romantic celebration of the other, and when Narsinh's other is none other than Krishna, his shringara kavya becomes Krishna bhakti, where Krishna is both divine and human, at the same time. Singing for Krishna, Narsinh celebrates his swami through amorous verses and divine surrender like Jayadeva. He sat in a temple and relentlessly sang for his Lord, living through absolute poverty. Nothing made him more jovial than singing the glory of his Krishna. The only man for Narsinh is Krishna, and for the latter Narsinh is a woman at heart. Narsinh, through his songs, brings in the cue of all romantic feelings and moments, recreates the idyllic Vrindavana in one’s mind, and he returns that Vrindavana a Vaikuntha with the footfalls of his Krishna. Through this commentary, the author Harsha V. Dehejia introduces one to the fullness of Narsinh’s poems, thereby making one known to Narsinh in and out. A Celebration of Love- The Romantic Heroine in the Indian Arts
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363025; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 9 x 11 Inches
A Celebration of Love celebrates the romantic heroine in the Indian arts. It is a visually rich journey which takes us to opulent havelis and bucolic groves, temples and courtyards, where we meet kings and nobility and also artists and artisans, as we hear whispers of gopis and the footfalls of Krishna. We encounter the nayika in miniature paintings and temple sculptures, pothis and calendars, dance and music but above all hear resonances of her heart throbbing longingly in our own selves for ultimately the nayika in the Indian tradition is a paradigm of the perennial quest of mankind for a divine and transcendent love. At the heart of the many and varied artistic expressions of the romantic sentiment is the nayika or the heroine. Her various adornments and trysts, the many moods of her love realized through amorous moments of longing or belonging, her strong presence in the Krishna lore and equally in the Sufi narratives, her portrayals in the Ragamala and the Barahmasa traditions of poetry and painting, through the beautiful depictions in miniature paintings as well as popular arts, have captivated our attention through the many centuries of Indian artistic representations. Her footfalls have been heard in courts and temples, she has been celebrated by the raja and the praja, she has a presence in homes and mansions and her persona resonates in enchanted forests and groves. She is all this and more, but above all she is the epitome of perfect beauty and the paradigm of the seeker of ultimate reality. In these essays, she comes alive in all her splendour and radiance, she captures our attention through her sheer sensuality as she looks into the mirror and prepares for that special moment. She delights in the many romantic situations and brings alive the concept of bhakti shringara or a certain spirituality that can only arise from indulging in love, but above all she stands self-assured and dignified, whispering that not only is there truth in love but that love is truth. Harsha V. Dehejia, who has a double doctorate, one in Medicine and the other in Ancient Indian Culture, both from the University of Mumbai, India has a deep and abiding interest in Indian Aesthetics and especially in the artistic expressions of the romantic emotion. He is a practising physician, and Professor of Religion at Carleton University. He lives in Ottawa, Canada. Printed Pages: 304. 021797
