History of Hindoo Medical Science
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8172680821; Hardcover; New; New;
Most of the sciences, which the presented century boasts of so much, were not unknown to the ancient Hindoos; and one has but to look into their writings to see whether the truths propounded by them some thousands of years ago do not still endure in their natural freshness. Starting with early civilisation of the Hindoos, in this unique work, the author refers to ancient writers on Hindoo Medicine, the Hindoo theory of creation and principles of hygiene as understood by the Hindoos. The book also deals with theory of Indian Medicine, Indian Materia Medica, Hindoo writers on Aetiology- Diagnosis and Treatment, Indian Surgery as well as vicissitudes of Indian Medicine and Surgery. The learned author comes to the conclusion that the Hindoo system of medicine can, on the whole, bear comparison with the Western. There are many things in which both agree, and if in certain points they seem to differ, they often differ only to agree in the end. Printed Pages: 280. 112360

Love is not an Emotion
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382146025; First Edition; Softcover; New;
In the book 'Love is not an Emotion', Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has given a completely different perspective on the phenomenon known as love. His words, like 'love is the only thing that you cannot think about, if you think, it ceases to be love, when thinking stops, love begins', have given love a whole new meaning and depth. The author emphasizes that love is not an emotion, not a feeling, not the sudden quickening of the heart on seeing the loved one, not something we fall in and out of and yet it is all of this and much more. The book explores love like never before right from its origins to its forms to our thirst for it, our response to it and more. The book will enlighten the reader's mind and show them a selfless way to love. At the end of the book, one will go through beautiful quotes, from Sri Sris wisdom, which have larger than life meanings. This book comes with CD.Printed Pages: 168. 104732

Cultivating a Daily Meditation
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8185102791; Softcover; New;
The discourses and ensuing discussions were recorded at the time, and later prepared into an edited text of the encounter; the result of which is this book.In his discourses His Holiness touches upon all the essential points of the Buddhadharma, and provides A Clear and simple method to cultivate a daily practice of meditation. He also goes into depth on how we should proceed in the effort to generate both the heart of compassion and the expansive view of emptiness, the Great Void, in our daily life. In addition, the question and answer sessions that follow each talk make for both inspirational and informative reading; being open discussions, they often lead to issues that arise in the course of a layperson's practice.In a sense His Holiness' discourses are principally a commentary on how one should proceed in order to cultivate a daily tantric meditational practice. The visualization used as the basis of the contemplation is that of Buddha and the four great Bodhisattvas: Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, and the female bodhisattva Arya Tara, and explains the symbolic significance of these figures.The picture that emerges from the totality of His Holiness' exposition is that Buddhism, in spite of its being labeled a religion, is mainly a way of life programmed to ensure that we bring some happiness, peace, meaning and purpose into our lives, and that we learn to live in harmony with the environment.Printed Pages: 145. 103619

His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama a" Title="the-dalai-lama">The Dalai Lama niversal Responsibility and Education is the result of two workshops held in New Delhi between His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and a Group of India scholars, philosophers, teachers and social reformers. The concept of Universal Responsibility, which His Holiness the Dalai Lama often emphasizes the need for in our world, itself arises out of ancient Indian philosophy. Taking this concept as their basis, the participants of the first workshop discuss ways in which we may all work to bring about humanitarian change in our society. The second worship focuses on the role of education in effecting positive change: who the real educators are in society, what type of education is the most beneficial, and how we can ensure that young people grow into disciplined, broad-minded and caring adults in order to secure a positive future for all.The first Book of its kind to be published by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Dialogues on Universal Responsibility and Education offers a fascinating Insight into the philosophical background of India and its transference to modern thought, as well as the practical WISDOM of is Holiness the Dalai Lama.Printed Pages: 156. 103599

The Gelug/Kagyu Tradition of Mahamudra
Snow Lion/Shambhala Publications/TBI; New Delhi, India; 1559390727; Softcover; New;
Mahamudra, the great sealing nature, refers to systems of meditation on both the conventional and ultimate natures of the mind. These have been transmitted through the Kagyu, Sakya, and Gelug traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Within the Gelug, Mahamudra teachings occur in a combined Gelug/Kagyu tradition exemplified in the First Panchen Lama's Root Text for the Precious Gelug/Kagyu Tradition of Mahamudra. The work presented here contains two brilliant commentaries by the Dalai Lama. The first is a teaching based directly on the First Panchen Lama's root text. In the second, His Holiness bases his discussion on the First Panchen Lama's own commentary to this text. The book opens with an overview of Mahamudra by Alexander Berzin that discusses the relation of mind appearances and reality and offers practical techniques for overcoming problems of excessive worry, anxiety, and disturbing thoughts. This treasury of practical instruction contains extensive teachings on the nature of mind, the development of shamata, sutra and tantra levels of Mahamudra, and the compatibility of Dzogchen and Anuttarayoga Tantra. Grammars and Dictionaries of Sanskrit Language
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 1979; 8170810256; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Though the First Edition of the Sanskrit Dictionary was published at Calcutta long long ago, no work has yet appeared to supersede the preface with which it was accompanied. Many contributions towards a History of Sanskrit lecography have indeed, since incidentally been made by Lassen, Roth, Goldstucker, Weber, Hall, Westergaard, Bohtlingk and others; but they are scattered over various works and periodicals, so that a treatise on this branch of Indian Literature, which should reflect the present state of Sanskrit scholarship, still remains a desideratum. The Author himself, who was more competent than any other to accomplish such a task, seems to have deferred it from time to time; for not only did he let the Second Edition (Calcutta : 1832) appear without the Preface, but even long subsequently, when he was asked to allow it to be reprinted for the Journal of the Royal Asiatic society, he declined to give his permission. That, however, he had an intention of re-writing it, in the next Article Grammars and Lexicons of the Sanskrit language. Now both the articles have been published together which will be welcomed by all students of Sanskrit literature who have not the rare first edition of the Dictionary within easy reach.Printed Pages: 156. 103889

Socialism in Jagannath Cult
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8187418710; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Socialism is a concept that stands ahead of any ism meant for the all round development of human society in general and constant well-being of the poor and the down-trodden in particular. This sublime concept has been existent from the dawn of the civilization since the basic nature of the mankind has compelled him to adopt an Environment of mutual co-existence and reciprocal co-operation. Jagannath Culture, in short, has been promoting the same philosophical doctrine of universal co-existence from time immemorial.Puri, popularly known as Srikshetra, the abode of Lord Jagannath, has been continuing as a meeting ground of all masters of various religious communities. These religious masters have forgotten their internal differences and personal identities under the influence of Jagannath cult and have opted an integrated approach to their philosophical outlook, which was based upon the essence of Jagannath Cult. The essence of Jagannath Cult is to negate the individual identity and importance and to adopt the involvement of many in respect of accomplishment of a particular work. In the process, everybody plays an important and vital role without which the work does not get completed. This constitutes the basic ideology of Socialism which has been found to be reflected in each and every rituals and festival of Lord Jagannath. Lord Jagannath is known as "Patitapaban", which means a sense of commitment towards the well being of the poor and downtrodden.Printed Pages: 126 with 9 Plates. 104090

Semiotica Indica: Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Body-Language in Indian Art and Culture, 2 Vols
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8173050465; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
"Semiotica Indica is the first attempt to describe the semiotics of Indian culture. It is meant to provide some basic ideas, concepts and material for the study of nonverbal communication in India. It draws from works on semiotics but revolves around the core concept of communication. The book is about Indian actions, how actions become gestures and how gestures transmit messages. It covers much of the literature in Sanskrit and modern Indian languages on nonverbal communication and organizes it in a fashion useful for three purposes: (a) to provide an "ancient overview" of the nonverbal communication; (b) to map nonverbal continuity in India from Bharata's time to the present day; and (c) to establish a conceptual base into which new findings may be integrated. This encyclopaedic dictionary is a survey of Indian semiotics from Rgvedic times to the present day sketching the theoretical (Sastra) and practical (Prayoga=loka) approaches of the leading semioticians with respect to their differing objectives: classifying the Sastra and the loka; establishing the philosophical sign system for canonical representation of human thought; devising Puranas for the creation of new ideas; gaining insight into the conditions of human knowledge; increasing the efficiency of sahitya, sangita, citra, vastu, ayurveda, jyotisa, darsana and the various branches of the arts; extending communication into agama, nigama, tantra, yonija and ayonija species. The underlying world-view has crystallized in certain concepts, reflecting the understanding of body and soul, of space and time, of indriya and atindriya, of the part and the whole, of the body and the senses. "This book contains nearly 6000 terms, the complex ones are supported by illustrations. The entries are ordered alphabetically, but each of the reference is guarded by numerous cross-references. The main focus is on producing penetrating insights into semiotics in general and nonverbal communication in particular. Written in simple elegant prose and strikingly illustrated, this encyclopaedic dictionary is full of practical insights for the understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of body-language in India. Chhattisgarh Rediscovered: Vedantic Approaches to Folklore
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8173050589; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is an invitation to scholars to rediscover the past glory of Chhattisgarh : A little known but fascinating part of middle India. The purpose of this book is to present a new method to explore the 'hidden' meaning in the oral tradition of Chhattisgarh. The book then presents a semiotic approach to the oral history of Chhattisgarh. It is the history from the bottom which betrays the anguish of a community, and demands the shaping of a just and realistic future for the under-previleged and outcasts in Indian society. It is the use of mythology to present history. A new history has been filtered from the mythical data of Chattisgarh. Mythical thoughts of Guru Ghasidasa mediate the gaps between continuity and change, thereby authenticating the idea of 'total history' of Chhattisgarh. The book expresses both the tradition and the actual. It is a combination of intra-cultural (Sastra and Loka) and intercultural relations: therefore intertextalism is connected not only with historic texts but also with folkgenre. It may thus give a broader dimension to the present-day realities and past happenings. It is hoped that the book will be a cause for collective action. It is also hoped that freedom and human dignity will continue to be the central concern of all the works of history. Printed Pages: 344 with 14 plates & maps. 100293

Archaeology of The Indian Cave Theatre: A Study of Ramgarh Hill of Chhattisgarh
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8176462608; Hardcover; New; New;
The Student of theatre, wherever his particular interest lies, will accept that the Ramgarh hill Cave theatre of Chhattisgarh State is the oldest known theatre of the world. We find in Ramgarh hill caves a richness of diversity of archaeological Material (along with the cave paintings) which can scarcely be equalled in world. Compared with most other genre of theatrical literature, however, the repertoire of the cave theatre is considerably less prolific, less varied, less immediately appealing and partly for this reason the cave theatre of Ramgarh hill has been ignored both by Archaeologist and theatrical historian. Historical factors produced an artificial break in interpretation of spontaneous Drama in Chhattisgarh. This Book Archaeology of the Indian Cave Theatre summarizes the pioneering interpretation of Professor H.L. Shukla in the field of cave theatre research. The data are presented in a well understandable and excellent illustrated form. Therefore, the book is indispensable for archaeologists, theatrical persons, Historians and interested readers. The book epitomizes Shukla`s greatness and should prove to be of sustained interest and permanent value to all interested in understanding Indian Art and ethos. 110427

Modern Sanskrit Literature
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8187418397; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The achievement of modern Sanskrit Literature has been called in question by various critics. As a matter of fact they are ignorant of the development of Sanskrit literature after Panditraj Jagannatha. The purpose of the present study is primarily to view the nineteenth century Sanskrit literature in its cultural context. Seen from this angle, the Sanskrit literature of the past three centuries with its amazing wealth and many-sided growth strikes one as nothing but a glorious revival reflecting the intense patriotic fervour and nationalistic upsurge.The sources are many but in particular they are from rare Sanskrit journals and material in them which could be utilized seems endless. Instead of reproducing each relevant Sanskrit writer in this study, the author's aim has been to re-introduce Appashastri Rashivadekar in broader perspective-his functional approach to Sanskrit language and literature.Printed Pages: 350. 104069

Recent Approaches to Axiology
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 1991; Hardcover; New; New;
Present Book consists of research papers in the field of Moral and Aesthetic values with Indian and Western approaches. It has three parts. In the first part there are papers devoted to 'Indian Approach to Values'. The second part is concerned with 'Western approach to Values'. The third part is related with certain critical observations on these articles. The range of the subject is very wide and these articles cover up topics such as Indian theory of Rasa, the Ehics of Poorva Mimansa, Art according to Abhinavagupta, Philosophy and Aesthetics, Advaita Vedanta, Raga in Indian Music, relationship between Moral and Aesthetic Values and concept of Beauty in recent Western thought.Art and Beauty do not only relate to objective and material world but they assume subjective and experiential character as they constitute distinct human nature. While dealing with the nature of Beauty it is found that it refers to particular instance of expression on account of which it is not possible to conceptualise beauty. Indian approach, approach to the problem of values seems to be comprehensive as it includes psychological, moral, cultural and reflective perspectives. Western approach as contained in the school of Phenomenology, Analysis, critical and structuralist tendencies has been undertaken in these papers.Arts are diverse and the principle of beauty intends to be unitary and critical. The relationship between ethical and Aesthetic values has been thought in the background of epistemological and axiological nature of pleasant and the Good, instrumental and intrinsic values. The problem of subjectivity and conceptuality are formidable and they are treated with rational acumen. The problem of action in its moral fervour has its prescriptive and meta-ethical dimension in the Context of Indian philosophy. Its value is ritualistic as well as reflective. Its dynamism has unique significance for self-discipline and self-knowledge.Printed Pages: 367. 103742
