The Quest
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523131; Softcover; New;
The film-script of The Quest (Moner Manush) is much more than a biography of Lalon Fakir. It reveals the stages of a simple young man’s emergence as Lalon Fakir, the prevailing social scenario, a disciple’s faith in his Guru and a man’s endless journey in quest of the single entity that his heart craved for. Lalon’s songs were devotional lyrics – poetic and passionate, carrying deep philosophical annotations – in tune with the music of the Baul community of rural Bengal.The baul community renounced all recognised institutional religions and revolted against long-established rites, customs and faiths. Breaking down the barriers of the narrow confines of communal faith they had found a large expanse under the sky, which had served as bountiful meeting place for many religions. In Lalon’s words, they were like ‘a rudderless raft in a shore-less river’; a ‘hidden current’ where ‘those who wanted to get lost can get lost.Printed Pages: 304 with colour photographs. 106525

11408 Govardhanram Madhavram Tripathi
Sarasvatichandra: Gunasundari’s Household, Part II
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125061584; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
An epic novel written in four parts from 1887 to 1901, Sarasvatichandra is both the enactment and embodiment of the life philosophy of one man, and his sole mission.Part II, Gunasundari’s Household, details the complex dynamics of a Hindu joint family. Minister of Ratnanagari, Vidya Chatura and Gunasundari were married as children. Intelligent and eager, a young Gunasundari is educated by her husband to share his pleasures of literature, poetry, philosophy. But this blissful aesthetic conjugality is disrupted when his relatives come to live with them. She must suddenly manage a household of fourteen individuals, each with different needs and idiosyncracies. Govardhanram’s acute, often delightfully wry observations on human nature, the household dynamics, his sharp characterisation and descriptions of a pregnant Gunasundari struggling to keep the family ‘joint’ and content are perceptive and thought-provoking.The novel holds up a fascinating mirror to Gujarati society, the joint family, particularly the role of women, and life in the princely states against the backdrop of India, pre-Independence, in transition at the turn of the nineteenth century—culturally, politically and ideologically. Before Gandhi, arguably no other work has so profoundly influenced the ethos and imagination of Gujarat as Sarasvatichandra. Parts III and IV, also translated by Tridip Suhrud, an acknowledged scholar of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Gujarat, are forthcoming. Printed Pages: 256. 107482

Sarasvatichandra, Part 1 (Buddhidhan's Administration)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8125059903; First Edition; Softcover; New; 14 x 22 Cm
A novel of epic proportions, written in four parts from 1887 to 1901, Sarasvatichandra is both an enactment and the embodiment of the life philosophy of one man, and his sole mission. Part I, Buddhidhan’s Administration, narrates the story of one individual’s extraordinary rise from poverty to power, to become the Karbhari of Suvarnapur. East India Company’s growing presence in the Indian native states provides the setting for the rivalry between Buddhidhan and the ruling Karbhari, Shathrai, and the royal intrigue involving Bhupsinh, claimant to the throne of Suvarnapur. The parallel story threading through all four parts is of an unusual and abiding love between Sarasvatichandra and Kumud who, betrothed young, fall in love before marriage—through an exchange of letters, words and worlds. Written sixty years before Independence, the novel holds up a fascinating mirror to Gujarati society of that time, the joint family, particularly the role of women, and life in the princely states, against the backdrop of a nation in transition at the turn of the century—culturally, politically, and ideologically. Before the advent of Gandhi, arguably no other work has so profoundly influenced the ethos and imagination of Gujarat as Sarasvatichandra. Part II, III, and IV, also translated by Tridip Suhrud, an acknowledged scholar of nineteenth and twentieth century Gujarat, are forthcoming.Printed Pages: 407. 102279

The Theatres of Bharata and Some Aspects of Sanskrit Play-production
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8121506611; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
This book concerns with the chapter on the classical Indian theatre architecture described by Bharata in the second chapter of Natyasastra and its appropriate use. While Abhinavagupta, his predecessors and successors commented on it from literary angle, some scholars of the present century have attempted to represent the theoretical ideas in varying graphic forms. But the graphic representations express diverging views. Goverdhan Panchal has presented a consistently unified conception of the theatres of Bharata, taking recourse to an interdisciplinary approach which consists of drawing references from the art and science of Indian architecture, ancient archaeological remains, other related chapters on Natyasastra and the classical plays themselves. The last reference has led him to evolve very convincing techniques of producing these plays taking cues from the directorial instructions provided by the playwrights of the past. This book settles many of the practical problems pertaining to terminology, functional divisions of the stage, and the methods of presenting the Sanskrit plays, all of which were hitherto conjectures and postulations, and offers definiteness to the comprehension of the issues of the second chapter of Natyasastra. Prem Chand: Novelist and Thinker
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8173070598; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Two trends seem to be dominant in Prem Chand criticism. On the one hand are the writers of dissertations, out to prove their theses; on the other are the 'progressive' critics in the grip of the ruling orthodoxy of the last sixty years. Both these trends have stood in the way of making an objective assessment of the complexity of Prem Chand's thought as well as his art. Professor Sharma, with his keen interest in the History of ideas, unravels the different strands in Prem Chand's thought. He demonstrates that while Prem Chand was deeply concerned with social and political problems, equally deep was his concern with moral and spiritual issues. And while his mind was independent and critical, his temper was traditional and conservative, firmly committed to the age-old values of India. With his wide acquaintance with the western critical tradition, Professor Sharma traces the evolution of Prem Chand's art, basing his discussion on a close analysis of the novels and short stories, respecting their integrity and autonomy as works of art.Printed Pages: 194. 101194

Globalization: Myth and Reality
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8180691284; Hardcover; New; New;
Globalization is an unavoidable reality in the modern world. Most of the countries have accepted it either willingly or unwillingly. Divergent views for and against globalization have been expressed. One view is that globalization has created opportunities for development in several countries, while the other view does not accept this contention of the supporters of globalization. There are many questions which are raised at different platforms. Some of these are: What is globalization? What are the fundamental factors involved in globalization? Who wants globalization? How does globalization affect different people? Whether globalization is beneficial for developing nations? The answer to some of the these questions, to some extent, can be found in the articles in this volume written by eminent scholars. An attempt has been made to discuss globalization, in general, and its impact on people, society and state, in particular. The book also examines various issues concerning social, political and economic aspects of India and Canada. Printed Pages: 492. 112518

Brahmanas in Ancient India: A Study in the Role of the Brahmana Class from C. 200 BC to c. AD 500
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1979; 8121502349; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Based on a rigorous analysis of the source material, the present work is the first systematic study of the history of Brahmanas in the post-Maurya and the Gupta periods. An attempt has been made to determine and assess their role in the religious, social, and political life of the times. As the custodians of the Vedic tradition, Brahmanas aimed at a socio-religious transformation by trying to "grasp both the sources of stability and seeds of change." The author has convincingly argued that the Brahmanas could meet the forces partly by remaining close to the political power and partly through their ingenious acceptance of the psycho-cultural dictates of the Indian masses, whose active involvement in the economic life was vital for the maintenance of social order. He has demonstrated that the institutionalization of a vast body of theoretical provisions and mythologically evolved doctrines helped them in acculturation of the various peoples. The penetrating analysis of the rituals and myths throws welcome light on the socio-economic levels of the patrons of major religious sects, and on the Brahmanical techniques of the social control. The author has made good use of various sociological concept-tools relevant to the study of the social roles and activities of Brahmanas during the period under review. He has also drawn upon the pioneering anthropological researches and field work to lay bare the role of the Brahmanas in the process of acculturation. Printed Pages: 296. 020067

The Third Dimension: Air Power in Combating the Maoist Insurgency
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382652168; Hardcover; New; New;
The Maoist Insurgency has been born out of long periods of social discontent, economic hardships and state apathy towards the neglected masses. Anti-Maoist operations have to be based on a strong political will, aggressive anti-guerrilla tactics and economic and social development of affected areas to win back the confidence of the people. A common perception is that in these operations, the role of air power is normally overlooked. History differs and tells us that air power has been used extensively to quell past insurgencies. This book explores the nature of insurgencies and air power lessons from past insurgencies. After analysing the Maoist insurgency, the employment of air assets in supporting the security forces is examined.Printed Pages: 192. 103258

Slowly the traditional military capabilities for C4ISR were transferred to the space, the 'Ultimate High Ground.' The use of navigation and communication satellites in direct support to the US war efforts was visible during Gulf War I, which is aptly referred as “First Space War.”The book delves at length about the Chinese Space Programme and their military exploits. Apart from militarisation, the Chinese went ahead with weaponisation of space, in order to gain asymmetric advantages over the much stronger and technologically advance US capabilities.The existing and futuristic military exploits of space assets by India has also been discussed in this book. A case for an “Indian Space Security Architecture” has been proposed, which shall secure the Indian space assets and provide comprehensive National Security. This book also highlights the necessity and urgency of Indian ASAT, as a strategic deterrence, to counter the threat to our space assets from the Chinese ASATs.Printed Pages: 212. 103222

Through the centuries, sculpture in India has been a dominant expression of the people and their land. Today India provides a cultural continuity that has survived a long and diversified history, in which changes have occurred, old images and artistic expressions have been altered and new elements and influences have been absorbed, enriching and variegating the cultural strands without ever breaking them. Sculpture, especially as an art form, was granted extensive patronage by the Indus Valley Civilization, the Mauryas, the Satavahanas, the Sungas, the Kushans, the Guptas, the Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas, the Pallavas, the Cholas, and still continues to thrive in contemporary India. Indian Sculpture is a richly illustrated book that reproduces some of the finest examples of Indian sculpture, with an extensive commentary on the importance of the art of carving, modelling and casting in the Indian civilization for over 4000 years. Sexual Abuse and Counselling of Victims with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Intervention and Prevention through Church and Society
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351481584; Hardcover; New; New;
The book is the outcome of the passion for research of the author in counseling abused girls in order to inculcate positive vibes and thoughts in their lives. The increasing number of sexual abuse cases reported in the media confirms the significance of the publication of Dr. Grace's research. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, this book brings to us verbal reports, case studies, symptoms and severity of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in abused girls.This book also invites us to see the complementary role of churches, families, and societies to not only prevent such atrocities, but also to provide effective interventions for which the suggestions provide a glimpse of the opportunities the significant others have in the lives of the abused. The readers will enter into dialogue with the pages of this book and re-examine their role in promoting abuse-free societies and supporting young lives that are abused. Printed Pages: 173. 113687

This is the sequel to the first volume of Ancient Hebrew Inscriptions: Corpus and Concordance, published in 1991. It contains some 750 inscriptions from the Old Testament period which were mainly published for the first time between 1990 and 2000. Some were discovered in regular archaeological excavations, others come from private collections. The new material includes ostraca from different sites, which are of religious, literary and historical importance, and extensive information about the personal names which were in use in the biblical period. The number of coin-legends and other texts from the Persian and early Hellenistic periods has also been enlarged. Each text is supplied with a brief description, an approximate date and publication information. The concordance provides an easy way to discover which Hebrew words and proper names occur in non-biblical sources and helps greatly to widen the basis for Hebrew language study. • A uniquely comprehensive and up-to-date collection of the numerous texts in ancient Hebrew outside the Bible • Supplements biblical evidence for ancient Hebrew language and everyday life in Old Testament times • A substantial second volume that enriches and expands upon the invaluable research resource of the original volume Contents Introduction; 1. A Day to Die For 1996: Everest's Worst Disaster (One Survivor's Personal Journey to Uncover the Truth)
Mainstream Publishing/TBI; New Delhi, India; 1780576412; Softcover; New;
A Day to Die For reveals the full, startling facts that led to the tragedy. Graham Ratcliffe, the first British climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest twice, was a first-hand witness, having spent the night on Everest's South Col at 26,000 ft, sheltering from the deadly storm. For years, he has shouldered a burden of guilt, feeling that he and his teammates could have saved lives that fateful night. His quest for answers has led to discoveries so important to an understanding of the disaster that he now questions why these facts were not made public sooner.History is dotted with high-profile disasters that both horrify and capture the attention of the public, but very rarely is our view of them revised to such devastating effect. 113120

Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1981; 0521240751; First Edition; Hard Cover; As New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
In this innovative book Dr Morris seeks to show the many ways in which the excavated remains of burials can and should be a major source of evidence for social historians of the ancient Graeco-Roman world. Burials have a far wider geographical and social range than the surviving literary texts, which were mainly written for a small elite. They provide us with unique insights into how Greeks and Romans constituted and interpreted their own communities. In particular, burials enable the historian to study social change. Ian Morris illustrates the great potential of the material in these respects with examples drawn from societies as diverse in time, space and political context as archaic Rhodes, classical Athens, early imperial Rome and the last days of the western Roman empire. Contents 1. The anthropology of a dead world; 2. ‘Mos Romanus’: cremation and inhumation in the Roman empire; 3. ‘Dem bones’: skeletal remains; 4. Taking it with you: grave-goods and Athenian democracy; 5. Monuments to the dead: display and wealth in classical Greece; 6. Famous last words: the inscribed tombstone; 7. At the bottom of the graves: an example of analysis; 8. Conclusion; Bibliographical essay; Bibliography; Index. Printed Pages: 284 with 48 line diagrams and 12 tables. Brand new copy. 18 Days: The Mahabharata
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789384030346; Softcover; New;
From comic book legend, Grant Morrison (Batman, All Star Superman, The Invisibles, Dinosaurs Vs. Aliens) and acclaimed Indian artist, Jeevan J. Kang (The Sadhu, Chakra the Invincible), comes 18 Days, a re-imagining of the great eastern myth, the Mahabharata, that tells the story of three generations of super-warriors, meeting for the final battle of their age. “The war begins with the clash of super-titans, armed with incredible weaponry. The characters are huge, cool, easy to identify with, to cheer and hiss at. The stakes are high, as is the body count. The vistas are spectacular. We think we know who the bad guys are and who the good guys are. In 18 Days, however, a character’s strength often proves to be his downfall or weakness. This is not a Lord of Rings or a Star Wars where the good guys win because they are right. The good guys in 18 Days are forced to cheat and lie and break rules to win.Although it has fantastic, mythic trappings, this is a very modern story of real politik and the failure of ideals in the face of harsh truth. This epic ends with destruction of a super-race of kingly humans and paves the way for the current Dark Age in which we live. The essential ambiguity, humanity and realism of characters, set in this incredible world of imagination, gives 18 Days its unique flavor. The tone is modern, gritty and emotionally against the backdrop of techno-mythic super-war. 109673

East and West in Aesthetics
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8881470314; Softcover; New;
The death of Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy fifty years ago marks a sort of watershed in the history of twentieth century aesthetics. His vast achievement as historian of Asiatic art, interpreter of Indian aesthetic thought and commentator of its major texts was of pioneering importance and, fundamental not so much in those sectors as such where there was certainly no dearth in his time of equally distinguished scholars and specialists, but insofar as it pushed back the boundaries of the aesthetic ecumene, laying bridges and opening up roads where deeply entrenched barriers and fences had hitherto prevented access. This is the second title of the series "II Loto e la Rosa" (The Lotus and the Rose), devised to foster the understanding of Asiatic philosophies and the appreciation of their spiritual insights in the Italian intellectual community. Difficulties of various kinds have delayed the publication of this book independently of the good will of contributors and of the present editor. Now East and West in Aesthetics sees the light in an auspicious coincidence with the Pacific Rim Conference in Transcultural Aesthetics at the University of Sydney (June 1997), and the 35th International Congress of Asian and North-African Studies, Budapest (July 1997).Printed Pages: 200. 102585

Matters of Opinion: Talking About Public Issues
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521793122; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
Matters of Opinion offers an interesting new insight into ‘public opinion’ as reported in the media, asking where these opinions actually come from, and how they have their effects. Drawing on the analysis of conversations from focus groups, phone-ins and broadcast interviews with members of the public, Greg Myers argues that we must go back to these encounters, asking questions such as what members of the public thought they were being asked, who they were talking as, and whom they were talking to. He reveals that people don’t carry a store of opinions, ready to tell strangers; they use opinions in order to get along with other people, and how they say things is as important as what they say. Engaging and informative, this book illuminates current debates on research methods, the public sphere and deliberative democracy, on broadcast talk, and on what it means to participate in public life. • The first detailed discourse analysis of focus groups • Discourse issues such as reported speech and topic control are linked to social issues of belief, agency, trust, and expertise • Interactions are considered within a wider context of broadcast talk, in phone-ins and news Contents 1. Paradoxes of opinion; 2. A tool kit for analysing group discussions; 3. Forums for opinion: what is it that’s going on here?; 4. Institutions of public opinion: voice of the people?; 5. The Imperfect Peasant Economy: The Loire Country, 1800-1914
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1982; 0521240603; First Edition; Hard Cover; As New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This book shows how a rural household economy of small-holders in one of the least isolated areas of France, the Loire Country, managed to survive the challenges of the nineteenth century. Rather than taking the view that this system was an anachronism doomed to disappear, the author recognises its large adaptive capacity during times of stress. This leads to a critical assessment of the notions of ‘industrialisation’ and ‘modernisation’ that will interest economists, anthropologists and social scientists, as well as historians. Contents List of figures and tables; Preface; Part I. Introduction: 1. Aims and scope; 2. The Loire Country: the land and its settlements; 3. ‘The theory of peasant economy’; Part II. Space: 4. Relative space: town and country; 5. The connectors; 6. The rural economy in toto; Part II. Time: 7. Peasant family and peasant population; 8. Peasant properties; 9. Crisis and stability: the rural economy through time; Conclusion; Notes; Bibliography; Index. Printed Pages: 366. Excellent condition. 003346

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8178223295; Second Reprint; Softcover; New;
Ashtanga Yoga: Practice and Philosophy integrates Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali as an organic whole, presenting them as two sides of the one coin. It also shows how the eight limbs are practised within the Ashtanga Vinyasa system. An extensive explanation of the fundamental techniques of breath, bandhas and drishti is followed by a detailed and comprehensive study of each posture of the Primary Series, following the traditional Vinyasa count. This is complemented by clear and informative anatomical illustrations and descriptions. Additional information on the mythological background and yogic context of specific postures enhances and brings further insight to the practice. Practical tips are also offered. In a final section of the book, a lively, authentic and practical rendering of the Yoga Sutra, for which the major ancient commentaries have been consulted, lucidly describes the entire path of Ashtanga Yoga and presents it as a realistic path for modern practitioners.Printed Pages: 316. 102221

Empire Forestry and the Origins of Environmentalism
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2002; 0521814170; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
What we now know of as environmentalism began with the establishment of the first empire forest in 1855 in British India, and during the second half of the nineteenth century, over ten per cent of the land surface of the earth became protected as a public trust. Sprawling forest reservations, many of them larger than modern nations, became revenue-producing forests that protected the whole ‘household of nature’, and Rudyard Kipling and Theodore Roosevelt were among those who celebrated a new class of government foresters as public heroes. Imperial foresters warned of impending catastrophe, desertification and global climate change if the reverse process of deforestation continued. The empire forestry movement spread through India, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and then the United States to other parts of the globe, and Gregory Barton’s pioneering study is amongst the first to look at the origins of environmentalism in global perspective. • The first global account of the origins of environmentalism, perhaps the most powerful political force in the world today • Shows imperial beginnings of the environmentalist impetus • Illustrated with numerous contemporary photographs Contents 1. Introduction; 2. The great interference; 3. Empire forestry and British India; 4. Environmental innovation in British India; 5. Empire forestry and the colonies; 6. Empire forestry and American environmentalism; 7. From Empire forestry to Commonwealth forestry; Bibliography; Index. Printed Pages: 208 with 24 half-tones. 029123

Indian Monastic Buddhism: Collected Papers on Textual, Inscriptional and Archaeological Evidence
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834119; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Until the late twentieth century, scholars of Indian Buddhism focused almost exclusively on Buddhist scriptural and commentarial sources-sources that depict Buddhism in an idealized and prescriptive fashion. Accordingly, Buddhist monks and nuns were imagined as celibate renunciants engaged in sophisticated Philosophical debate and austere meditative practices leading to enlightenment. Little attention was paid to the kinds of textual and archaeological materials that go beyond mere prescription and shed light on the lived realities of Buddhist monastic culture. What was life in monasteries actually like? How did monks (and nuns!) sustain themselves and administer their establishments? What kind of ritual and devotional practices did they engage in, and what were their relations with the laity?Printed Pages: 422. 102372
