Vivadaratnakara of Candesvara: Law of Partition and Inheritance
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121200121; Hardcover; New; New;
The Vivadaratnakara of Candesvara Thakkure (14th cent.) is one of the most comprehensive works on the substantive portion of Hindu Law and is respected by the Mithila School as a most authoritative treatise. The peculiar feature of the work is that it cites almost all the Codes of the sages, bearing on a particular subject and puts them in such an order that the various rules of law appear from the Texts themselves in their logical sequence. As usual, the Vivadaratnakara contains an important section on Dayabhaga, i.e. Laws on inheritance and succession. In this section The Author who had been the Minister of Justice in the Court of a King of Mithila and a renowned jurist of his time, defines the term daya i.e. inheritance and judges the interests of different grades of successors. His classification of different types of ‘sons’ and their rights on the Property of their deceased Father is of great interest. The subject of the womens ’ right on inherited property has been treated by the author with an unbiased and progressive approach. The work had therefore, been held in great esteem not only by the Mithila school but also by early British jurists and law-makers in India. The present volume contains an accurately edited text of the Dayabhaga portion of the Vivadaratnakara and an English translation prepared by two versatile scholars and practicing advocates of the Calcutta High Court in the late nineteenth Century. The Translation is quite Illuminating and improves, to a great extent, on earlier translations. It removes many misconceptions and misinterpretations of the earlier law writers of British India. An exhaustive introduction presents a brief History of the development of Hindu law codes in General and of the laws of inheritance and succession in particular, and fully brings out the basic Philosophy of Hindu law.Printed Pages: 254. 105656

Agricultural Development, Rural Institutions, and Economic Policy: Essays for A. Vaidyanathan
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195698541; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Where does India stand in terms of social and economic development goals? Are we at a crossroad today when it comes to economic development? With liberalization and globalization as the backdrop, this timely book discusses the most recent advances and changes in agriculture, rural transformation, and institutional development in India. It emphasizes that public policy and decentralized local institutions have to move in tandem to ensure sustainable and deliverable agricultural development. The contributors support inclusive strategies of development, emphasize the need for better governance and decentralization in the development process, and support entry of market pricing and user charges in sectoral planning and management. The book is divided into sub-themes with significant policy implications—micro-credit policies, water resources, farm and non-farm employment, and institutions and governance. It calls for a reversal in the thinking on the planning process, that is, creation of institutions ahead of sectoral planning and balancing the sectoral growth priorities to meet social and regional requirements. 026182

Adjudication in Religious Family Laws: Cultural Accommodation, Legal Pluralism, and Gender Equality in India
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 1107023890; Hardcover; New; New;
This book argues that the shared adjudication model in which the state splits its adjudicative authority with religious groups and other societal sources in the regulation of marriage can potentially balance cultural rights and gender equality. In this model the civic and religious sources of legal authority construct transmit and communicate heterogeneous notions of the conjugal family gender relations and religious membership within the interstices of state and society. In so doing they fracture the homogenized religious identities grounded in hierarchical gender relations within the conjugal family. The shared adjudication model facilitates diversity as it allows the construction of hybrid religious identities creates fissures in ossified group boundaries and provides institutional spaces for ongoing intersocietal dialogue. This pluralized legal sphere governed by ideologically diverse legal actors can thus increase gender equality and individual and collective legal mobilization by women effects institutional change.Printed Pages: 438 with 4 b/w illustrations & 4 Tables. 101473

Shopping for Bombs: Nuclear Proliferation, Global Insecurity and the Rise and Fall of the A.Q. Khan Network
Hurst & Company; London, UK; 1850658269; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
A.Q. Khan was the world's leading black market dealer in nuclear technology, described by a former CIA Director as 'at least as dangerous as Osama Bin Laden'. A hero in Pakistan and revered as the Father of the Bomb, Khna built a global clandestine network that sold the most closely guarded nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya. The book provides a riveting, inside story of the rise and fall of A.Q. Khan and his role in the devastating spread of nuclear technology over the last thirty years. Drawing on exclusive interviews with key players in Islamabad, London and Washington, as well as with members of Khan's own network, BBC journalist Gordon Corera paints a truly unsettling picture of the ultimate arms bazaar, Corera reveals how Khan operated within a world of shadowy deals among rogue states and how his privileged position in Pakistan provided him with the protection to build his unique and deadly business empire. It explains why and how he was able to operate so freely for so many years. The book provides new insight into Iran's nuclear ambitions and how close Tehran may be to the bomb. In addition, the book contains information on how the CIA and MI6 penetrated Khan's network, how the US and UK ultimately broke Khan's ring, and how they persuaded President Musharaff to arrest a national hero. The book also provides the first detailed account of the high-wire dealings with Muammar Gadaffi which led to Libya's renunciation of nuclear weapons and which played a key role in Khan's downfall. The spread of nuclear weapons technology around the globe presents the greatest security challenge of our time. Shopping for Bombs provides a unique window into the challenges of stopping a new nuclear arms race, a race which A.Q. Khan himself did more than any other individual to promote. The Religious Drama: An Art of the Church (Beginning to 17th Century) (Christian Classics Revived: 5)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480075; Reprinted; Hardcover; New; New;
This classical on ageless Christian Drama aims to present periods when actually dramatic performances or `Religious Drama' were used to teach Biblical and Hagiographical subjects to the general public. This short sketch of one of the arts of Christian Church presents Origin, History, and Development on the subject with Illustrations and Bibliography; in chronological order.Since beginning the significance of some special Christian festivals was shown through these performances. Then came up the Liturgical Drama in the Middle Ages (12th & 13th centuries). During this phase, plays were acted within or near the Church, based on stories from the Bible and of the Saints. The language of the Liturgical Drama was Latin, and the music was also used in the form of incidental dance and processional tunes. Eventually, the plays came under secular sponsorship and began to be presented outside the Church; the local populace became involved across whole of Europe. Plays were then presented by the Christian Communities in the vernaculars, based on stories from the Bible. By the 13th century Miracle Plays, also called as Saints' Plays, came into picture. These plays used to present, a real and fictitious account of the life, miracles, or martyrdom of a Saint. Later, they were banned by Henry VIII in the mid-16th century.Morality Plays (15th & 16th centuries) were an allegorical drama, wherein characters personify moral qualities (such as charity or vice) or abstractions (such as death or youth) thereby teaching moral lessons. However, Interludes were referred as dramatic scenes presented usually with music and singing in between of a play when a little fun was required for enlivening the audience after a serious scene. The phase of Elizabethan Drama (late 15th & 16th centuries) covered the works of Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. It was during this time frame that permanent theaters were built.During the early 17th century Catholic Church splitted up and many new Christian organizations called Protestants were formed. As a result a new Protestant religion called Puritans evolved. The Puritans believed that man must follow the Bible exactly and try to communicate directly with God. In order to communicate with God there had to be no distractions from their religion. Puritans rather continued to immerse themselves in their belief by avoiding any such distractions. This resulted in the end of `Religious Drama' but the Author hinted at its revival during the years rolled by. This living book of Biblical record covers subjects like Art, History, Poetry, Anthropology, Dramaturgy, Christianity, and Biographical narratives of various Saints; and is meant for Historians, Artists, Litterateurs, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Students and Researchers.Mr. Gordon Crosse of New College, Oxford and Lincoln's Inn, authored, co-authored and edited many books including Shakespearean Playgoing, 1890-1952; A Dictionary of English Church History; and Fifty Years of Shakespearean Playgoing.Printed Pages: 200. 106429

Provincial Politics and Indian Nationalism: Bombay and the Indian National Congress, 1880-1915
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521051460; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This is a study of the Indian National Congress, the first political association to approach the government of India at an all-India level. The Congress became the most important national party in twentieth century India, and the whole history of the freedom movement is closely bound up with its fortunes. National politics, however, were influenced by regional and local affairs. In the early twentieth century the Indian Congress was split between the ‘Moderates’ and the ‘Extremists’. Dr Johnson argues that this division was closely related to existing rivalries between politicians in the provinces, and that provincial interests determined their national point of view. Because the early Congress depended so much for its regular organisation on men from Bombay, party lines in western India were particularly important in determining the course of the struggles between the parties in the National Congress. The unpublished letters and diaries of the protagonists in these disputes have enabled Dr Johnson to examine this theme in detail. This is the first book to stress the need for study of regional and local politics as an integral part of the history of the Congress. Its revelation of the complex connections between parochial, provincial and all India politics adds a new dimension to our understanding of nationalism in South Asia. Contents List of plates Acknowledgements Abbreviations Introduction 1. The Indian National Congress 2. The politics of western India in the later nineteenth century 3. Journeys to Empire: Enlightenment, Imperialism, and the British Encounter with Tibet, 1774-1904
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0521761336; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 155 x 235 Mm
This fascinating study of two British missions to Tibet in 1774 and 1904 provides a unique perspective on the relationship between the Enlightenment and European colonialism. Gordon Stewart compares and contrasts the Enlightenment era mission led by George Bogle and the Edwardian mission of Francis Younghusband as they crossed the Himalayas into Tibet. Through the British agents’ diaries, reports, and letters and by exploring their relationships with Indians, Bhutanese and Tibetans, Stewart is able to trace the shifting ideologies, economic interests and political agendas that lay behind British empire-building from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. This compelling account sheds new light on the changing nature of British imperialism, on power and intimacy in the encounter between East and West, and on the relationship of history and memory. Contents Introduction 1. An enlightenment narrative 1774 2. Wives, concubines and ‘Domestic Arrangements’ 3. Imperial eyes in ‘the Golden Territories’ 4. Enter Younghusband 5. From enlightenment to empire 6. Tibet lessons. Printed Pages: 296 with 19 b/w illustrations and 3 maps. 029186

The Student's Writing Guide for the Arts and social Sciences
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521360056; First Edition; Hard Cover; As New; Fine; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This book is designed to help students with the problems they face in their academic writing. Beginning with the premise that successful writing in the arts and social sciences goes hand in hand with understanding the subject-matter and finding out what to do with it, the book deals with the tasks that confront students as they think about a problem and explore possible answers. Using concrete examples from a variety of disciplines, the author demonstrates an innovative approach to different sorts of task: reading, taking notes, interpreting and analysing. He moves on to show how the parts of an academic essay are developed and structured, and how to make effective use of language as an academic medium. This is a book that students will want to read through and refer back to. The practical knowledge required in writing a good academic essay is never underestimated, but Gordon Taylor’s advice is always very clearly presented and very much to the point. At the same time it is refreshingly thorough, and the detailed illustrations he provides come from long experience in teaching students the art of writing. Students and teachers alike will find the Guide an invaluable resource. Contents Preface; Sources of extracts used in the text; 1. Introduction; Part I. Reflection and Research: 2. Learning Through Interaction: The Study of Language Development
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1983; 0521282195; Reprint; Paperback; Very Good; Very Good; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
There have been many studies of children learning to talk, but perhaps none as comprehensive - in terms of the number of children involved, the period of continuous observation and the scope of the analysis - as the Bristol Study of Language Development. This is the first full-length volume to be written by members of the research team and it is a fundamental study of language development from infancy to primary school. It synthesises the research to date and discusses some key socio- and psycholinguistic themes with reference to transcribed excerpts from spontaneous conversations recorded by the team and to experimental data. The authors’ central argument is that conversation provides the natural context of language development and that the child learns through exploring his world of interaction with other people. The quality of learning is seen to depend particularly on the strategies that adults employ to develop and extend children’s contributions to interaction. This has important practical implications for the transition from home to school, and the second part of the book examines the differences and similarities between the talk that goes on in these two environments. The final chapter considers the development of literacy. The model of language development presented here will make stimulating and challenging reading for a wide range of sociologists, psychologists and educationalists as well as being of particular interest to linguists. Contents Acknowledgements; Introduction; 1. Language as interaction; 2. Becoming a communicator; 3. The development of comprehension; 4. Context, meaning and strategy in parent-child conversation; 5. Developing linguistic strategies in young school children; 6. A comparison of talk at home and at school; 7. Language, literacy and education; Appendix; References; Index. Printed Pages: 312. 004688

Development Retold: Voices From the Field
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8170227984; Hardcover; New; New;
One of the many initiatives that were born out of the turbulence of India Cooperative Union (ICU), Founded in 1948, under the leadership of Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya, the institution undertook several path breaking ventures in its attempt to build a new India, all the while advocating the cooperative principles and unshaken in its belief that it was only people-led development that could usher in the nation new era. Among the ICU many endeavors were the setting up of Faridabad Township by the refugees themselves initiating agricultural cooperatives and rural credit schemes; running the Central Cottage Industries Emporium in a manner that truly encourages crafts persons; and development the Super Bazar as a cooperatives store that met consumers needs. If ICU many initiatives met with resounding success it was because of this voluntary organization committed band of women and men who made it possible to translate the principles of people-led development into action in the field. This book is the story of the struggles and victories of ICU recounted by some of these very individuals who are still around to tell the tale. And in the telling of it while they are sometimes nostalgic about that uniquely magical period in the nation history, they are equally analytical and incisive as they recall the ICU experience and critique the role of the state in the entire experiment. Through those 18 in-depth interviews, we journey back in time and get a taste of the heady excitement of that generation endeavors, these voices from the field speak of what commitment to people-led development can achieve, and the critical role of voluntary organizations in creating a more just and equitable society. The Legend Makers: Some Eminent Muslim Women of India
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8180690016; Hardcover; New; New;
The book gives a graphic detail about the contribution of muslim women in the medieval, modern and in the contemporary periods. These women mentioned in the manuscript are legend makers of their time. Their achievement are deeply embedded in the print and the audio-visual media. The journey towards their goals is a touching story of their trials and successes which have been vividly discussed in their biographical works and other forms of literary expression, e.g. poems, prose and short stories. In fact, their work has become a source of inspiration and motivation not only to muslim women but to all women irrespective of their religion, caste and creed. These handful muslim women discussed in the book belonged to different periods and mainly came from the urban educated and social reformist families. The various activities undertaken by them have tried to de-mystify the stereotypical image of muslim women living in seclusion, segregation and in the zenana apartments. They strove hard to promote the status of women by setting personal examples, opening formal institutions of learning, establishing organisation that took up social and educational issues. They motivated women through their writings to come out of seclusion, question irrelevant customs and traditions and gradually opt for education. In fact, the path shown by them have been directly or indirectly responsible for encouraging the enrolment of girls, especially muslim girls, in the formal institutions of learning in the contemporary times. Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8170228239; Hardcover; New; New;
The book gives a detailed account of the growth of higher education of women in the 19th and 20th century in Western India. It examines the role of the Christian missionaries the male and the female intelligentsia and later the British Government who were the important agencies involved in promoting women's education. Their efforts helped in laying the foundation of higher education of women which finally culminated in the establishment of the S.N.D.T. University in 1916 in the Bombay Presidency. This was the only full fledged university for women. The period also saw the beginning of professional education of women. The professions women generally went in for was teaching, nursing and midwifery in Western India. This was also true for other presidencies as well. A comparative analysis of the growth of professional education of women is undertaken at the All India Level. The growth of education among women promoted political consciousness among them. It is significant to note that from the beginning of the national struggle women participated in it effectively though in a small number. It was only under Gandhi ji that the educated women from urban areas and a women from rural areas joined has and in the struggle for Swaraj. Thus, the book gives a graphic account of the social economic, political aspects of the growth of higher education of women in Western and also in the whole of India. Printed Pages: 216. 112453
