The Joint Hindu Family: Its evolution as a legal Institution
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1977; 8121502705; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The "laying at rest" of the joint Hindu family is said to have been initiated at least from the point of law and its disappearance in society has frequently been forecast by sociologists and by public opinion. Now that the controversy between protagonists and reformers seems to have been subsided it may be the right time for re-examining without bias and prejudice an institution which has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted. The present study traces the outlines of the evolution of this institution questioning some assumptions regarding its history, nature and function. It advances a plea for and does not preclude a joint effort of various disciplines like history, law, sociology, and psychology etc. to assess an institution which is responsible for much which is characteristically Indian. Passing Through the Gateless Barrier: Koan Practice for Real Life
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 1611802814; Softcover; New;
Gateways to awakening surround us at every moment of our lives. The whole purpose of koan (gong’an, in Chinese) practice is to keep us from missing these myriad opportunities by leading us to certain gates that have traditionally been effective for people to access that marvelous awakening. The forty-eight koans of the Gateless Barrier (Chinese: Wumenguan; Japanese: Mumonkan) have been waking people up for well over eight hundred years. Chan teacher Guo Gu provides here a fresh translation of the classic text, along with the first English commentary by a teacher of the Chinese tradition from which it originated. He shows that the koans in this text are not mere stories from a distant past, but are rather pointers to the places in our lives where we get stuck—and that each sticking point, when examined, can become a gateless barrier through which we can enter into profound wisdom. Three English Plays: Larins Sahib/Mira/9 Jakhoo Hill
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 019566633X; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This volume brings together a collection of three plays written by Gurcharan Das during his twenties. An introduction by the renowned playwright himself, adds to its value. Larins Sahib is a historical play set in the confused period after the death of Ranjit Singh when the British first arrived in Punjab. This prize-winning play explores the development of the hubris, which brings about the hero’ s downfall. Larins Sahib has been performed in major Indian cities, and at the Edinburgh Festival. Mira, ‘ a rite of Krishna for five actor-dancers’ , premiered at the La Mama Theatre in New York in 1970. It explores the phenomenon of sainthood through the story of Mirabai, the sixteenth century Rajput poetess-saint. The New York Times called it ‘ remarkable in the way it combined Indian legend with the sophistication of Western total theatre … [it] has something of the quality of a dream ritual’ . 9 Jakhoo Hill, the third play in this series, is set in the aut umn of 1962 in Shimla. It examines a number of themes— the changing social order with the rise of a new middle class, the incestuous obsessions of an ageing uncle, the hold of Indian mothers on their sons, and the eventual betrayal of sexual love. This is a book that both the general reader and the theatre buff would love to read and possess. Printed Pages: 208. 013926

The Goindval Pothis: The Earliest Extant Source of the Sikh Canon (Harvard Oriental Series, No. 51)
Harvard University Press; Cambridge, Massachussets, USA; 1996; 0674356187; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; 19 Cms x 27 Cms
This volume explores the earliest available version of the Sikh canon. The book contains the first critical description and partial edition of the Goindval Pothis, a set of proto-scriptural manuscripts prepared in the 1570s. The manuscripts also contain a number of hymns by non-Sikh saints, some of them not found elsewhere. Through a meticulous analysis of the contents of these rare manuscripts, G. M. Singh establishes their place and importance in the history of Sikh canon formation. The book will be of great interest to scholars of comparative canon studies and of medieval Indian literature. Naxal Violence: The Threat Within
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904152; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The causative factor for the existence of the Naxal movement in India is ideological. Today, 196 districts are affected by it. Of these districts, 35 have been seriously impacted where the writ of the state is either weak or almost nonexistent. The spread of Naxalism is an indication of the sense of desperation and alienation that has swept across large sections of India. Naxal violence in the red corridor and beyond has increased owing to the failure of the central and state governments to satiate the needs of the locals and meeting their basic expectations. Outreach efforts of Naxalites for arms, training, finance, ideology, drugs trade, and to forge a broad front against the ‘common enemy’ –India, are a matter of concern. They have established linkages with the Maoists of Nepal, militant groups operating in northeast India, anti-India actors both state and non-state based in Pakistan, and umbrella organisations at regional and global levels. The military might of the CPI (Maoist) has grown to a sizeable force of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) and continues to challenge the Indian state. The series of violent incidents against the state agencies and abduction of government personnel highlights the degree of concern that the problem demands. This volume is a compilation of papers that aims to address the various perspectives of what the Prime Minister of India has oft declared to be the most serious internal security challenge facing the nation. An in-depth study of the characteristics of the Naxal movement, the book covers the genesis, causative factors, strategy, linkages of the movement and the options and challenges for the Indian state. Recommendations for conflict resolution are also charted out in the book. Now is the time to systematically deal with the threat before it transforms into a potent force.Printed Pages: 262. 104339

China's Defence Policy: Indian Perspectives
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502779; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
China’s rise on the world stage has been relentless and consistent over the past two decades. This rise is concurrent with the United States’ perceived decline as an economic power with resultant expectations of waning US influence on the world stage. Today the story of China’s growth has become a subject of avid discussion and analysis not only among world leaders, academicians and members of the strategic community, but even by the print and visual media and sections of the public at large.Over the last decade, China has been biennially releasing White Papers on National Defence. This book gives out an invaluable Indian critique on China’s national defence policy, nuclear environment, maritime strategy, leap frogging development in space warfare and network centric warfare capabilities with a special reference to the White Paper released in 2010. Above all, it provides a road map on China’s plans to deal with its perceived security challenges.As China rises, its core issues have expanded from Tibet and Taiwan to the South China Sea, which is a deviation from its professed intentions of a peaceful rise and defence modernisation only for defence. What message is China trying to send ? This book allows the reader to pick out the gaps between professed Chinese intentions and practices on ground, which should lead to a better understanding of China’s rise, particularly for India’s security.Printed Pages: 224. 104365

Pakistan's Tactical Nuclear Weapons: Conflict Redux
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789381904763; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In paradox, the fact remains that this step has further lowered Pakistans nuclear threshold through the likely use of TNWs. The introduction of TNWs into the tactical battle area further exacerbates credibility of their control. Pakistan has not formally declared a nuclear doctrine, but it is well known that nuclear weapons are its first line of defence. The use of TNWs in the India-Pakistan case will alter the strategic scenario completely as Pakistan would threaten India with the use of TNWs in the event of New Delhi responding against Islamabad with a conventional strike in reaction to a 26/11-style terrorist attack. Pakistan forgets that given its offensive strategic posture and continuing involvement in terror strikes in India, it is New Delhi which is confronted with the problem of developing a strategy to counter Pakistans first-strike and proxy war in the light of its declared no-first-use policy. This edited volume attempts to address and decipher complex issues, including aspects such as Chinas WMD collaboration with Pakistan, nuclear command and control dynamics within Pakistan, overall rationale and implications of TNWs, safety and security of nuclear weapons, scenarios for nuclear usage, Indias potential response options and, more specifically, the technical aspects of the Nasr delivery system.Printed Pages: 248. 104287

The Saundaryalahari of Sankaracarya: A Translation and Commentary on the Anandalahari
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608105; Second Revised Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 25 x 25 Cm
This book comprises the first part of Saundarya Lahari (The Upsurging Billow of Beauty), popularly known as Ananda Lahari, covering the first forty-one verses.This poetic work has fascinated generations of scholars and laypersons with the sublime beauty of the verses in praise of the Devi, but also puzzled people by the authorship of Shankara. The text is a protolinguistic composition using a pictorial language of images. Beauty, elevated to the highest level, provides content to the otherwise abstract notion of the Absolute. The absolute joy of Advaita is presented subjectively as ananda and objectively as saundarya.This tenth-century hymn to the Devi is a poetic restatement by the philosopher Shankara of his strict Advaita Vedanta monism. In a compelling series of verses, Shankara draws in many strands of India’s heritage and braids them into a vision of luminous, transcendent Beauty.The present commentary by Guru Nitya Chaitanya Yati grew out of his class of intimate meditations. He has integrated the academic disciplines of aesthetics, linguistics, and psychology with contemplation into a comprehensive study of creative manifestation. The heterodox Tantric Shri Vidya schools are centered on the realistic worship of the Devi or Goddess and the Shri Chakra. Keeping in line with contemplation, the Appendix provides 53 meditations on the Shri Chakra. Printed Pages: 278. 107440

An Introduction to the Study of Hinduism
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8121204984; Hardcover; New; New;
An Introduction to the Study of Hinduism (1893) presented some of the salient features of this great Tradition in a very befitting manner and still today those aspects of Hinduism are highly relevant. He presented Hinduism in such a manner that removed misconceptions of ages. It showed that Hindus are neither superstitious nor idolators, as the terms were understood by the Christian. This book conclusively proved that Hinduism is the most tolerant of all organizations, and that it is prepared to receive any Truth from any sources.The author was of opinion that Hinduism may assimilates even Christianity or Mohammedanism, if the votarist of these Religions conform to its custom. Thus, when Raja Ram Mohan Roy attempted to create a Brahma Dharma to opposse the Christians, Guru Prosad Sen suggested that how one will attack a Religion which will take any thing that is good, and reject anything that is bad? This makes Hinduism the most progressive and vigorous of all Religious faith. Thus, Hinduism is capable of more important modification, if those who Press Reforms and go to work cautiously and with patience.Printed Pages: 231. 105795

Dagbok förd under min resa i Centralasien och Kina 1906-07-08 I-III
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2010; 9515831962; New;
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2007; 9525031403; New;
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2012; 9515832551; New;

Dravidians: On the Original Inhabitants of Bharatvarsha or India
Asian Educational Services; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8120603486; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
This work was written to prove, mainly on philological grounds, the antiquity of the Dravidian race in India. The work aims to point out a connection existing between the several tribes that apparently are widely different from each other he has also tried to indentity the so called Pariahs of Southern India with old Dravidian mountaineers and to establish their relation to the Bhars, Brahuis, Mhars, Mahars, Paharias, Paravari, Paradas and others, these formed the first layer of the ancient Dravidian stratum. Furthermore he has tried to demonstrate how much of what is considered Aryan in name and origin was probably of Dravidian origin. Swami Vivekananda's Legacy of Service: A Study of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195673883; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This manuscript deals specifically with the contentious issue of sewa, organized service to humanity, which was Vivekananda s legacy to his followers. It is a distinctive contribution to the study of the Ramakrishna movement in its exclusive focus on the idea of service. It argues that the Ramakrishna movement s commitment to sewa was shaped by a complex of varied influences. These included not only the impact of individuals such as Vivekananda and the interaction between Indian and western ideals, but also dramatic changes in the delivery of organized philanthropy. That took place during the nineteenth century in societies disrupted by industrialization and colonization. The study will trace the way in which social, economic, and political factors beyond its direct control have also conspired to make increasing demands upon the Ramakrishna Math and Mission as a provider of service. The debate surrounding he genesis and growth of the sadhana of service within the Ramakrishna movemen t has been a fascinating one not least because of the various interests and starting points of those who have participated in it. The study in rooted in substantial direct encounters with the Ramakrishna Math and Mission s contemporary practice of the sadhana of service in both India and Bangladesh. It includes material taken from interviews conducted with members of the movement, and is enriched by reference to literature produced by individual Math and Mission centers which is not very widely known. Lady of the Lotus-Born: The Life and Enlightenment of Yeshe Tsogyal
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 1999; 1570625441; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The first Tibetan ever to attain enlightenment was in all probability a woman: Yeshe Tsogyal, closest disciple of Padmasambhava, the master who introduced the Buddhist teachings to Tibet in the eighth century. This book is not only her biography; it is a colorful and intriguing picture of Tibet at the beginning of the Buddhist era—a time of upheaval, when royal patronage was striving to foster the new teachings in the face of powerful opposition. It gives a kaleidoscopic picture of a vanished world, the heart of which is still alive today. It also presents an archetypal description of the teacher-disciple relationship, showing how Yeshe Tsogyal attained enlightenment in following the complete Buddhist path, including the Dzogchen teachings. Passages of profound teachings are offset by episodes of exploit and adventure, spiritual endeavor, court intrigue, and personal encounters. The dramatic story, full of beauty and song, is narrated largely in the first person and offers an intimate glimpse of Tsogyal's feelings, aspirations, hardships, and triumphs. Lady of the Lotus-Born is a terma, a Dharma treasure written and concealed for future generations by the accomplished masters Gyalwa Changchub and Namkhai Nyingpo, disciples of Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsogyal. 11600 Gyan Swarup Gupta
India: From Indus Valley Civilisation to Mauryas
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8170227631; Hardcover; New; New;
The book unveils the Dark age of Ancient Indian History which stretched from 4000 B.C. to the period beginning with the birth of Christ. Unveiled what we find is wonder, curiosity and a need for reflection. The author as different from expository style has adopted an interrogative approach. He asks questions, gives the evidence so far available however scanty it may be and then proceeds to give answers. He gives answers which are supported by evidence, archaeological or otherwise. Where there is no evidence to support, he leaves the question either unanswered or produces possible answer, in both cases making his readers reflect, thus sharing with readers not only his knowledge but his doubts as well. This method has an advantage in that when questions come before the answer, it discourages dogmatism and easy certainty. Proceeding in this logical way the whole new vista is opened and new things, new landmarks in the varied history of the ancient India appear and some puzzles are solved. The book brings out that the presiding deity of Indus Valley Civilisation was not Shiv but Rishabh, the first Tirthankar of the Jains and an incarnation of Vishnu as per the Hindus. It also brings out the contrary to the belief that the Indus Valley Civilisation had no contact with the contemporary and ancient civilization of Sumer in ancient Mesopotamia, but it had very intimate relations. The author looks into the language of Sumer and found in them a large number of word of Hindi. If as he surmises the symbols of such words are also the same in both Sumerian an Indus scripts may be deciphered. Helpfully a list of some common words is appended at the end of the volume. The book also throws light on the vexed puzzle of the origin of the Mauryas ad also conjectures on the law of succession among them which brought Bindusar and Ashok on the though not necessarily they bring the eldest sons. The History is a matter of knowledge but of reflection and the great merit of the book is that the author not only gives information and his reflections but makes the readers to reflect.
