The Sufi Message (Volume 4: Mental Purification and Healing)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120806018; Fifth Reprint; Softcover; New;
Sufi Hazrat Inayat Khan (Baroda 1982-Delhi 1927) provides a beautiful guidebook for your inner path. It contains neither prescriptions nor do`s and don`ts. You may be provided with an insight and understanding which may be as a welcome in the circle of Sufi friends, or as a silent companion on your further way. "The soul is called Atman, which means happiness or bliss itself. It is not that happiness belongs to the soul; it is that the soul itself is happiness." This inspiring book covers almost all aspects of the life of someone who chooses to go the way of self-unfoldment and self-realization. It refers to the struggle of life, its intoxication and its deeper side. The aim, meaning and purpose of life are discussed. What is wanted in life? Essential for the answer to this question are concepts like the art and development of personality, attitude, interest and indifference, purity of life, and the ideal. All these are discussed in separate chapters dealing with these items in an inspiring and up-lifting manner, nevertheless remaining realistic as to daily life's requirements. Life is presented as an opportunity to gain experience both within and without, stressing their mutual interdependance. The second half of the book discusses, amongst others, inner life, the kingly road from limitation to perfection, and the stages on his destiny, in the context of the continuity of life. This the fourth volume of the Sufi Message by Hazrat Inayat Khan. It includes three works- the first, Healing is a collection of teachings on spiritual healing. In this work the Suri mystic discusses the basic laws governing themind`s influence on the body, which he considers greater thanthat of the physical body on the mental existence, and he emphasises the need for a stronger awareness of the possibilities which spiritual healing can offer. Mental Purification is a collection of lectures on the working and hygiene of the mind in relation to the spirit. This part conveys in a beautiful way the synthesis that can be gained between inner life and life in the world. The volume concludes with the Mind World- which in the terms of the Sufi poets is called `The palace of Mirrors` - an expression which Inayat Khan takes as symbolising on different levels, the whole of life.Printed Pages: 299. 102467

The Sufi Message (Volume 7: In An Eastern Rose Garden), (Second Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8120806654; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"How the words 'love', 'harmony' and 'beauty' delight the heart of everyone who hears them" is the opening sentence of this volume. The author, Hazrat Sufi Inayat Khan, has labelled his message as the Sufi message of Love, Harmony and Beauty, because in the present world these qualities seem to be underrated if not neglected altogether. Moreover, spirituality cannot exist without these. The first prerequisite, however, even to experience the delight he mentions above, is an open heart. This book aims at awakening and developing this heart quality, and preparing the reader to be able to face the world's hardships, yet fostering a sympathizing warmth for our fellowmen. It covers an marvellous variety of subjects which turn out to be strongly interrelated. In a smooth and unassuming manner the auther creates an integrated view of life within and without. He has created a beautiful system of thought and feeling without running into the risks of straightforwardness, simplicity and rigour. Yet his views tend to strike you for their very simplicity, inspired and inspiring as they are.Printed Pages: 283. 102468

In Praise of Holy Men: Hagiographic Poems by and About Hariram Vyas
Egbert Forsten; Groningen, The Netherlands; 2002; 9069801418; First Edition; Paperback; New; 17.5 Cms x 25 Cms
This book is a contribution to understanding the formation of religious communities as revealed by the rhetoric of hagiographical works. It studies how religious groupings legitimize themselves by affiliation by holy men, and how do they go about "imagining" this affiliation in songs and stories in praise of holy men. The focus of the book is on the influential North Indian Krishna bhakti (devotional) movement of Hinduism and its multiple hagiographic works by and about Hariram Vyas, a sixteenth-century Hindu holy man or bhakta. The book includes a new scholarly edition and first-time translation of an important set of poems by Vyas in praise of several holy men, including the famous Kabir. It also provides an edition and translations of selected hagiographical material about Vyas himself. The history of Krishna devotion in particular and Hindu devotion in general, and has broader relevance for the history and phenomenology of religion. Printed Pages: 300. 001353

Cultural Encounters in India: The Local Co-Workers of the Tranquebar Mission, 18th To 19th Centuries
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8187358726; Hardcover; New; New;
The history of social and religious encounter in 18th century South India is narrated through fascinating biographies and day to day lives of Indian workers who worked in thefirst organised Protestant mission enterprise in India, the Tranquebar Mission (1706-1845). The Mission was originally initiated by the Danish King Friedrich IV, but sustained by religious authorities and mission organisations and supporters in Germany and Britain. The book challenges the notion that Christianity in colonial India was basically imposed from the outside. It also questions the approaches to mission history concentrating exclusively on European mission societies. Liebau maintains that the social history of 18th century South India cannot be understood without considering the contributions of the local converts and mission co-workers who played an important role from the very beginning in the context of Tranquebar Mission.Printed Pages: 566. 101973

Numbers, Language, and the Human Mind
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2003; 0521831822; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
What constitutes our number concept? What makes it possible for us to employ numbers the way we do; which mental faculties contribute to our grasp of numbers? What do we share with other species, and what is specific to humans? How does our language faculty come into the picture? This book addresses these questions and discusses the relationship between numerical thinking and the human language faculty, providing psychological, linguistic, and philosophical perspectives on number, its evolution, and its development in children. Heike Wiese argues that language as a human faculty plays a crucial role in the emergence of systematic numerical thinking. She characterises number sequences as powerful and highly flexible mental tools that are unique to humans and shows that it is language that enables us to go beyond the perception of numerosity and to develop such mental tools. • Makes an original contribution to a central field of cognitive science (language and number) • Analyses the impact of language on numerical thinking • Accessible and reader-friendly Contents Introduction; 1. Numbers and objects; 2. What does it mean to be a number?; 3. Can words be numbers?; 4. The language legacy; 5. Children’s route to number: from iconic representations to numerical thinking; 6. Ganga and Yamuna: River Goddesses and Their Symbolism in Indian Temples
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178242850; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
There are many books on the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, pictorial and celebratory. The present one is of a different kind. Professor von Stietencron investigates the temple sculptures of Ganga and Yamuna in order to unveil a whole cosmos of Hindu ritual and conceptual tradition. He shows how an entire worldview informs the planning and sculptural embellishment of such a temple—conceived of as the body of the deity enshrined in it. Consequently this book is a historical study of the sculptures of the goddesses Ganga and Yamuna adorning the doorways of Indian temples, most recognizable from the Gupta period onwards. It examines how these gracious and purifying riverine deities have been conceived in human form. It discusses in detail the rich store of puranic myths and legends woven around these deities, tracing their Vedic roots and showing their evolution since then. Translated from the German, this is a significant work of classical Indological scholarship. Drawing upon Sanskrit and various other sources, it provides major insights into the complex cultural history of Hindu religious traditions. Printed Pages: 202. 033891

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121512158; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This project is an exploration of how women interpreted the cultural dietary norms for pregnancy based on their reproductive histories, socioeconomic status, and family structure, and, in turn, how their food practices shaped their nutritional and health status. Based on 15 months' fieldwork in New Delhi squatter settlements, Dr Vallianatos meticulously documents cultural values and beliefs, dietary analysis, and the nutritional and health status of mothers. From this research, it is clear that women do not blindly follow cultural dietary proscriptions but modify their diets to suit their individual realities. Printed Pages: 256. 031710

Victoria’s Got a Secret
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184953739; Softcover; New;
HelenKay Dimon puts her red-hot pen to paper to tell the sizzling true love story of Victoria Sinclair, lead anchor of Naked News Network: her true identity, the drama behind the camera, and the whimsical courtship that inspired it all.When Canada’s Naked News lead anchor chose the stage name Victoria Sinclair to debut her risqué take on global headlines, little did she know that millions of viewers would soon tune in to watch her artfully disrobe in front of the camera. But behind every alter ego is a real person, often hidden from public view, and there’s much that Victoria is hiding.Raised in a family of artists and intellectuals, the young Victoria-to-be excelled in school as well as in the tutorials of her exotic grandmother. But her real education comes in high school, compliments of a handsome, talented scrapper named Paul who gives her his heart, body and soul only to be devastated when he loses the girl he’s crazy about to dreams and ambitions too big for their small Canadian town. Those ambitions are realized in Toronto as she climbs the corporate ladder and falls under the seductive spell of an older, worldly man who orchestrates her transformation from a shy brainiac in a business suit into a sensual siren named Victoria Sinclair.With a come-hither voice and seemingly nothing to lose but her clothes, Victoria isn’t as easy in her own skin as a growing legion of fans believe her to be. Victoria’s got a secret actually a few. So when a twist of fate brings Paul back into her life, will he even recognize the girl she once was?Printed Pages: 264. 105474

11889 Helnrich Zimmerb (Author) & Joseph Campbell (Ed.)
The Art of Indian Asia: Its Mythology and Transformation, 2 Vols
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120816307; Second Reprint Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present work is intended not as a handbook but as an introduction to its subject, to be read from beginning to end. Each section is preparation for the next. Chapter I, presenting as it does a brief historical outline of the transformations of Indian art as well as a key to the symbology of the forms, can be used as a guide during the first perusal of the pictures. For the reader then wishing to find quickly the several portions of text referring to any spefific group of monuments, a copious index has been supplied, together with textual references in the Description of Plates and cross-references in the footnotes. Marginal references to the Plates, furthermore, accompany the text. These should make possible an easy and rapid correlation of the materials of the two volumes. The first two groups of Plates in the text volume illustrate, for the most part, the anthropological and comparative observations of the text. Included among them, however, are a few photographs that are indispensable to Dr. Zimmer's argument but do not meet the aesthetic standard of the Plates volume. On the other hand, the final cluster of text Plates constitutes. an independent pictorial appendix, illustrating the miniature and Rajput art of the eleventh to nineteenth centuries A.D. Dr. Zimmer's notes on this subject had not been developed beyond preliminary jottings, and could not be incorporated in any major section of the text. But since there is actually a rather special, very delicate, lyric quality about these paintings on palm leaf and paper, which sets them apart, somewhat from the tradition of the stone monuments, it is not inappropriate that they should be given a separate place.Printed Pages: 1126. 102018

The Guilt is Alive
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8178358859; Hardcover; New; New;
The Guilt is alive is an absorbing novel by Hemalatha Gnanasekar. It is a true story about a calamity that occurred in the author's life and through this book, she intends to share with the world the pain and sorrow that haunts her. Since the author feels that she is partly responsible for the tragedy that happened in the Cameron Hills of Jamaica, West Indies, she is gripped with a strong feeling of guilt from which she will never recover. The book offers many lessons which are universal in nature. First, it teaches a lesson to the over-ambitious parents who depend too much on their children for support or rather expect too much from their children.Printed Pages: 263. 106260
