Mythology of Buddhism in Tibet and Mongolia: Guide to the Lamaist Collection of Prince Ukhtomsky (Satapitaka Series: 641)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8177421255; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The German work Mythologie des Buddhismus in Tibet und der Mongolei by the great Buddhologist Albert Grunwedel (Leipzig, 1900) has been translated into English for the first time by Dr. Mrs. Sushama Lohia who did her doctorate under the iconic Mongolist Prof. Walther Heissig. The book traces the development of the Buddhist pantheon in India, its dissemination to Tibet in the first period, Indian and Tibetan masters, and the conversion of the Mongols to the Gelukpa denomination who inherited the rich iconography of Lamaism. The major part is devoted to the iconics of the tutelary deities (yi.dam), Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, goddesses, dakinis, Dharmapalas and local deities. Detailed end-notes are followed by an index. It is a foundational work on Lamaist iconography of Tibet and Mongolia, and a sine qua non for historians of Buddhist art in India and its evolution in the Lamaist world.;Dr. Mrs. Sushama Lohia did her Masters in Sanskrit from the University of Delhi, studied Mongolian under Prof. Walther Heissig, got her doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1968 on the translation and annotations on 'Mongol Tales of the 32 Wooden Men' in the 1746 (1686) version (publ. Otto Harrassowitz, Wiesbaden). She wrote on 'Lalitavajra's Manual of Buddhist Iconography' known as Sku.brnan sum.brgya in Tibetan or '300 Icons' with a preface by Lcan.skya Hutuktu (1717-86). Teaching Social Science in Schools: NCERT's New Textbook Initiative
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299046; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The NCERT has been publishing a new generation of social science textbooks since 2005. Teaching Social Science in Schools is a manual that explains the rationale for the new approach and illustrates how the new textbooks can be used effectively. It provides answers to many questions such as: - What problems are teachers likely to face while teaching with the help of the new textbooks? - Why not provide straight and direct definitions for children to learn? - Have such textbooks been used elsewhere in the country? - What roles are parents expected to play? Alex M George and Amman Madan come up with jargon-free replies in a friendly, ‘frequently-asked-questions’ format. They take us through the challenges of textbook preparation and offer guidelines for interactive classroom sessions. This book is a must-have not only for school and college libraries, but would also well adorn the bookshelves of teachers, trainee teachers, parents, students, educationists, designers of school curricula, or any reader interested in the way young people are taught social science in India. Tibet and The British Raj: The Frontier Cadre1904-1947
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8186470921; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Despite the popular image of Tibet as a remote and inaccessible land to which few Europeans ventured, more than one hundred British-Indian officials lived and worked there during the years 1904-1947.Following Colonel Younghusband's 1903-04 mission to Lhasa, these officers and their supporting staff were posted in central and southern Tibet, and, after 1936-1937, at the British Mission Lhasa. Among those who rose to the senior positions there were such famous frontiersmen as Colonel P.M. Bailey, Sir Charles Bell, and Hugh Richardson.This ground-breaking work draws on previously unpublished sources, both oral and written, to examine the character, role, and influence of these officers. It concentrates on those who formed a small, distinct, group of Tibetan specialists : 'the Tibet cadre'. These men were diplomatic representatives of the Raj, but they were also scholars, spies, and empire-builders, who not only influenced events in Tibet but also shaped our modern understanding of that land. This will be the definitive source for students of Anglo-Tibetan relations.Printed Pages: 347 with 8 Pages of Plates. 103647

An Enquiry into the Nature of Liberation: Bhatta Ramakantha's Paramoksanirasakarikavrtti (Collection Indologie: 122)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8184701950; First Edition; Softcover; New; 16 x 24 Cm
This book presents a short philosophical treatise in which twenty rival theories of the liberated state (moksa) are introduced and countered and a long discursive commentary that explores and develops the arguments that the treatise advances or implies. The original treatise comprises fifty-nine Sanskrit verses composed by Sadyojyotih (c. 675–725 AD), the earliest named Saiva philosopher of the Mantramarga of whom works survive. The commentator, Bhatta Ramakantha (c. 950–1000 AD), was a Kashmirian whose writings systematised the doctrines of the classical Saiva Siddhanta for some centuries the dominant school of tantric Saivism. Presented here is a first critical edition of these interlinked works and a richly annotated English translation. A lightly annotated introduction lays out clearly the ideas that the edited texts expound. Their study casts light not only on the history of Saiva thought, but also on a number of religio-philosophical doctrines for which little other testimony survives. The Buddhist Tantras: Light on Indo-Tibetan Esotericism
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120806999; Fifth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The author here reprints a number of his published Tantra essays, and writes some others to fill out this work. It has much material not readily available elsewhere in Western language sources. It concludes with a correlation of the two Tantra collections of Tibetan Buddhist canon, which are the revealed Tantra in the Kanjur, and exegetical works in the Tanjur. The work is leavened with illustrations and drawings. This book has been divided into four sections. Part One is an Introduction which places the position of the Buddhist Tantras within Mahayana Buddhism and recalls their early literary history, especially the Guhyasamajatantra; the section also covers Buddhist Genesis and the Tantric tradition as well as the analogical thinking in the Buddhist Tantras. Part Two: the author discusses the foundations of the Buddhist Tantras-he considers the Tantric presentation of divinity; the preparation of disciples and the meaning of initiation; some Tantric materials; symbolism of the mandala-palace; Tantric ritual and the symbolism of its attainments; twilight language and a Tantric song. Part Three: This section is devoted to Special Studies which are very rarely available to the general public, such as the nine orifices of the body and the Tantric teachings of the inner Zodiac; female energy and symbolism in the Buddhist Tantras; and the five-fold ritual symbolism of passion. Part Four: The Bibliographical Research contains a correlation between the trantric portions of the Kanjur and the Tanjur.Printed Pages: 265. 102312

Logics of War: Explanations for Limited and Unlimited Conflicts
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382652298; Hardcover; New; New;
Most wars between countries end quickly and at relatively low cost. The few in which high-intensity fighting continues for years bring about a disproportionate amount of death and suffering. What separates these few unusually long and intense wars from the many conflicts that are far less destructive? In Logics of War, Alex Weisiger tests three explanations for a nation's decision to go to war and continue fighting regardless of the costs. He combines sharp statistical analysis of interstate wars over the past two centuries with nine narrative case studies. He examines well-known conflicts like World War II and the Persian Gulf War and unfamiliar ones such as the 18641870 Paraguayan War (or the War of the Triple Alliance), which proportionally caused more deaths than any other war in modern history.When leaders go to war expecting easy victory, events usually correct their misperceptions quickly and with fairly low casualties, thereby setting the stage for a negotiated agreement. A second explanation involves motives born of domestic politics; as war becomes more intense, however, leaders are increasingly constrained in their ability to continue the fighting. Particularly destructive wars instead arise from mistrust of an opponent's intentions. Countries that launch preventive wars to forestall expected decline tend to have particularly ambitious war aims that they hold to even when fighting goes poorly. Moreover, in some cases, their opponents interpret the preventive attack as evidence of a dispositional commitment to aggression, resulting in the rejection of any form of negotiation and a demand for unconditional surrender. Weisiger's treatment of a topic of central concern to scholars of major wars will also be read with great interest by military historians, political psychologists, and sociologists.Printed Pages: 320. 103256

Archaeological Survey of India: Reports (1862-1884), 23 Vols
Agam Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 1994; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Sir Alexander Cunningham's contribution in Indian History and Indian Archaeology is great and in fact he may be regarded as the father of Indian History and Archaeology. He was appointed as Director General of Archaeology in 1862. This year and the appointment of Sir Alexander Cunningham are the beginning points of Systematic research in the field of Indian Archaeology. Under Cunningh the Archaeological research in India was founded and well-established during the period 1862-1884. Cunningham's extensive archaeological researches in all parts of India, facing many hazards and hindrances like old age, ill-health, the-then technical know-how employed for excavations and survey all were an Odyssey facing many odds. But Cunningham's personal hardships and he himself are long forgotten and have gone into pages of history. Now Cunningham is remembered for his Reports of Archaeological Survey of India. His monumental twenty-three Volumes of Reports and one Volume of Index published during the years 1862-1884 is not forgotten. In fact, they are the founding stones of Indian History and Archaeology. They are the base upon which many generations of Indian historical researches based their researches and future generations will continue to do so. Since the publication of these Reports' one century and many years have passed. This time-period is long enough to make a work rare and forgotten. So it is good to see 'Old' Cunningham's work in a fresh reprint. His reports are still useful and relevant for Indian History and historical researches. Bound in attractive and uniform bindings these Reports would be a pride possession.Printed Pages: 5000. 101570

Marking the spot of Buddha's enlightenment, Bodhgaya is greatly revered by Buddhists, especially for the bodhi tree beneath which the Master sat in meditation. After the death of Buddha, Bodhgaya flourished as an important religious centre and numerous shrines, stupas and monasteries were erected. The site continued to attract pilgrims and was only abandoned in the 15th century. The revival of interest in Bodhgaya began in 1802, when the Burmese sent a mission there. It soon attracted the attention of British administration as well. Francis Buchanon-Hamilton visited the site in 1811, and published a report in 1836. Alexander Cunningham first visited the site in 1861, and recommended the excavations be conducted. These were undertaken by Major Mead in 1863, but no report was published. Cunningham returned to Bodhgaya in 1871, and then between 1875 and 1880, the British government in co-operation with the Burmese mission, began to repair the site thoroughly. The remains of Bodhgaya date from as early as the Maurya and Shunga eras, as well as from later Gupta and Pala periods. The site is dominated by the soaring tower of the Mahabodhi temple, which is built in front of the bodhi tree. The temple is one of the important monuments of ancient India and has been frought with controversy, since the late 19th century, when restorations gave it its present form. Built over earlier temples, it stands on the site of the Buddha's enlightenment and is the sole survivor of monumental brick traditions in eastern India. The temple is surrounded by a stone railing and innumerable votive stupas and several shrines. Present work first published in 1892, is a detailed report of Alexander Cunningham's visit to the temple in 1881, and describes in detail the important discoveries made by him. Hindu-Catholic Engagements in Goa: Religion, Colonialism and Modernity
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125055215; Hardcover; New; New;
Hindu–Catholic Engagements in Goa offers a novel perspective on the Portuguese empire and Catholic hegemony in Asia that for almost half a millennium—from 1510 to 1961—had its capital in Goa. Based on fresh archival studies and extensive ethnography, it reveals the dramatic role of religion at the beginning of colonialism and modernity and provides insight into Goa’s intricate Hindu-Catholic syncretism today. Vasco Da Gama’s celebrated passage to India (1497–99) not only initiated a period of Christian expansion, in which Jesuit missionaries declared war to the alleged ‘idolatry’ of Hindus. The engagement with the until then largely unknown and unexpectedly rich culture of Hinduism was also part of profound modern transformations that, in the long run, lead Christian Europe to recognize the plurality of religions around the globe.Hindu village gods and Catholic patron saints commonly attract veneration from people of the respective ‘Other’ religious community and, yet, do not create confusion between the distinct identities of Hindus and Catholics. At the core of this seeming syncretistic paradox lies a communal concern for neighborhood, genealogy, protection and health that, at times, overrules doctrinal divides in the village communities. Hindus and Catholics share trust in communicating with the divine and holy in ways that occasionally favor ritual over belief and appreciate substance before meaning. Contrary to postcolonial theories of ‘Othering’, this book identifies religion thus as an inherently hybrid dimension of the intersection of colonialism and modernity and identifies local, rather than universal and epistemic, rather than ethical principles at the core of Goa’s remarkable religious pluralism.Printed Pages: 228. 101756

The Shah-Namah of Fardusi
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8175365072; Softcover; New;
The book is the most extensive rendering into English couplets of the great Epic Shah Namah in Persian language by the immortal poet, Fardusi.The plan adopted has been that of taking the introduction, with a portion of the history of the earliest kings of Persia in the mythical and pre-historic ages, and following these with prose translations of the reigns of the best-known monarchs and with various celebrated episodes, such as that of the fight of the hero Rustam and his son Suhrab, and from those epochs down to that of Yazdagird., about A.H. 411 (A.D. 1020), during the period of the history of Persia spanning more than 3500 years. Between these there has been inserted an epitome of the history of the intervening periods in prose, so that the whole conveys a full impression of the entire poem.This is the most faithful rendering in its adherence to the original. The uncompromising fidelity and the method followed by the translator will surely enable the readers to master the peculiarities and intricacies of the original through the medium of translation. Since attaining independence, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan have forged their own paths—building relationships with outside powers and throwing off the last vestiges of Soviet domination. But in many ways, Moscow still sees Central Asia through the lens of the Soviet Union, and it struggles to redefine Russian relations with the region. Alexey Malashenko offers a comprehensive analysis of Russian policies and prospects in Central Asia. It is clear that Russian policy in the former Soviet space is entering uncharted territory. But does the ruling establishment understand the fundamental shifts under way? It is time for Moscow to rethink its approach to Central Asia.Printed Pages: 308. 105044
