Imperialism Crisis and Class Struggle
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 9789350024379; Softcover; New;
This book of essays is written in honour of James Petras, in recognition of his intellectual achievements and political interventions - his steadfast principles, distinguished scholarship, extraordinary writing and uncompromising dedication to the popular struggles of millions across the world. In recognition of his lifetime of significant contributions and central role in the global struggle for social justice, the authors of this collection, each a leading scholar in his and her own right, address some of the most critical issues of our time: those of imperialism, crisis and class struggle. These issues allow the authors to identify both `the enduring verities and contemporary face of capitalism` and James Petras` contributions to their work and that of others. The Cuban Revolution as Socialist Human Development
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 9789350024393; Softcover; New;
This book argues that the Cuban Revolution warrants a closer look as a model of socialist human development. A re-reading of the Cuban Revolution from this angle engages unresolved issues in the theory of socialist humanism and the notion of human development popularized by the United Nations Development Programme (i.e., predicted on capitalism). UNDP economists and other agencies of international cooperation for development give a human face to a capitalist development process that is anything but humane. Socialism in Cuba has taken a very different form (socialist human development) than it did elsewhere in the twentieth century. The Cuban Revolution`s unique characteristics enabled it to survive adverse conditions - a `near-perfect storm` - that still threaten its evolution. Printed Pages: 382. 111751

Floral Patterns of India
Thames & Hudson/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 0500518394; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 21 x 30 Cm
Following the success of Pattern and Ornament in the Arts of India, Henry Wilson has turned, for this companion volume, to a single theme. But what a theme: the variety of floral motifs in the exquisitely wrought details of India’s architectural wonders is boundless, and one can only marvel at the way in which the basic elements of wood, stone and plaster have been transformed into masterworks of decorative art. From the illustrious Mughal Empire during its greatest period of monument-building and artistic creativity to the time of British rule, which brought with it an unprecedented period of peace that allowed great wealth to be concentrated on the arts, the richness of India’s architecture is overwhelming. Henry Wilson’s fine photographs reveal the skill, patience and imagination of the many thousands of craftsmen who have turned to floral motifs and rendered them with precision and life-enriching creativity. Juxtaposed with the photographs are Wilson’s own detailed drawings, all created by hand but with a stencil-like clarity that helps us understand the original historical patterns. The result is an invaluable sourcebook that will appeal not only to those interested in one of the world’s oldest civilizations and greatest cultures, but also to anyone seeking inspiration for their own creations. Hobson Jobson: A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms, Etymological, Historical, Geographical, and Discursive
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8178224429; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Words of Indian origin have been insinuating themselves into English ever since the end of the reign of Elizabeth and the beginning of that of King James. When such terms as calico, chintz, and gingham had already effected a lodgment in English warehouses and shops, and were lying in wait for entrance into English literature. Such outlandish guests grew more frequent 120 years ago, when, soon after the middle of last century, the numbers of Englishmen in the Indian services, civil and military, expanded with the great acquisition of dominion then made by the company; and we meet them in vastly greater abundance now. Vocabularies of Indian and other foreign words in use among Europeans in the East, have not unfrequently been printed. Several of the old travellers have attached the like to their arratives; whilst the prolonged excitement created in England, a hundred years since, by the impeachment of Hastings and kindred matters, led to the publication of several glossaries as independent works; and a good many others have been published in later days. The dictionary holds over 2,000 entries, generally with citations from literary sources, many of which date of the first European contact with the Indian subcontinent, frequently in other non-English European languages. Most entries also have etymological notes. It is a historical dictionary of Anglo-Indian words and terms from Indian languages which came into use during the British rule of India. It was written by Henry Yule and Arthur C. Burnell and first published in 1886. Burnell had died before the work was finished, and most of it was finished by Yule, who, however, deeply acknowledged Burnell's contributions. A subsequent edition was edited by William Crooke in 1903, with extra quotations and an Index added.Printed Pages: 1029. 102578

Hobson-Jobson: A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms, Etymological, Historical, Geographical, and Discursive
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121501091; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Words of Indian origin have been insinuating themselves into English eversince the end of the reign of Elizabeth and the beginning of that of King James, when such terms as calico, chintz, and gingham had long passed into English language and literature. Such foreign words started being used quite frequently 185 years ago when, soon after the middle of the last century the number of English men in Indian services, civil and military expanded with the great acquisition of dominion then made by the East India Company. Hobson-Jobson in original compilation was intended to deal with all that class of words which, not in general pertaining to the technicalities of administration, recur in the daily intercourse of English in India, either as expressing ideas really not provided for by English language or supposed by speakers to express something not capable of just denotation by any English term. The work, in the long course of its compilation underwent some modification and enlargement of scope which has been presented to readers. Those who have studied the pages of Hobson-Jobson have agreed in classing it as unique among similar works of reference, a volume which combines interest and amusement with instruction, in a manner which few other dictionaries if any, have done. Dharma was a marvelous invention of the human mind. It has been a great gift of India to itself and to the world. Low and Licentious Europeans: Race, Class and 'White Subalternity' in Colonial India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125037012; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Building on, yet defying and interrogating the subaltern studies paradigm for the understanding of South Asian history, this book re-examines some of its tacit assumptions and introduces the category of ‘white subalternity’. Harald Fischer-Tine? explores, innovatively, the intersection of the various systems of differentiation and hierarchy in British India between 1780 and 1914 that neatly demarcated the rulers from the ruled. In examining the history of white non-elite groups such as European sailors, vagrants, criminals and prostitutes, and elite efforts to either ‘reclaim’ or hide them from the ‘native gaze’, this book challenges received ways of interpreting colonial rule. The study makes a strong case for understanding colonial power relations not in terms of a fixed ‘white-over-black’ contestation but rather as a situational, contextual and dynamic system. It argues that racial identity, including ‘colonial whiteness’ was a fluid category. It faced the constant threat of being undermined in the colony along the lines of class, gender and deviance—a result of complex stratifications within European society. Importantly, the study shows how the discourses and practices of the British ‘civilising mission’ in India bore striking similarity to the project of educating and disciplining the lower classes at home. Drawing on a wealth of archival and published material, travelogues, autobiographies and an exclusive collection of insightful illustrations, this book combines cutting edge theoretical approaches with thorough empirical analyses. Fischer-Tine?’s innovative examining of race and class and his elegant and fluid style combine to make this an exceptional book, especially useful for anyone interested in the social and cultural history of British imperialism and in the history of colonial South Asia as a whole. Siddhartha, a Brahmin`s son, is clever and well loved, yet increasingly dissatisfied with the life that is expected of him. Setting out on a spiritual journey to discover a higher state of being, his quest leads him through the temptations of luxury and wealth, the pleasure of sensual love and the sinister threat of death dealing snakes, until eventually, he comes to a river. Chapter I of this study, which discusses the older Upanisads, viz., the Brhad Aranyaka Upanisad and the Chandogya Upanisad, describes at the outset how the idea of the Supreme Being, the unique mystic power, was conceived in the words Brahman and Atman and how these two entities merged with each other and became identical. It then discusses the doctrine of metempsychosis as evolved from the relation between the Supreme Being and the world of plurality. In this period, the magician-priest begins to become a philosopher. All Rhea had ever wanted was a perfect Mills & Boon romance. But considering the world she lived in, it was probably too much to ask. She was raised in a traditional and conservative Sikh family in Jalandhar where it was unfathomable for a girl to stay unmarried till age 25, let alone 33. But here she was, a single, independent girl in search of Mr. Right. Her search had started at a very early age when, at 15, she was engaged to a 23-year-old boy! But that story didn’t go as her parents had planned and everything unravelled quite rapidly. Little did she know that the repercussions of this faulty step would haunt her for a long, long time. In her pursuit of the right man, there would be many wrong ones, making the better part of her early young life revolve around finding ‘a suitable boy’. Between a domineering mother, a hapless but supportive father and the slew of boys who go in and out of her life, Rhea tries her best to make sense of her chaotic world.Printed Pages: 208. 105077

Man in Indian Tradition: Vidyapati's Discourse on Purusa
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8173052174; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
The Book deals with the image of "man" that was posited in the medieval period when north Indian Society was beset with crisis due to the internal conflict of sectarian ideologies as well as the onslaught of the Islamic politico-religious power. This state of socio-cultural and political situation was perceived by Vidyapati, a great poet and statesman of Mithila (north-eastern part of Bihar) in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century, as that of crisis of man. He was probably the first intellectual of north India who recognized the significance of such socio-political and religious issues as "what is man?", "what is manliness?", "what is dharma?", etc., in a situation of multi-religious social and political order. There is no space for jati/varna/kula in the structure of man presented by him. Even in the sphere of religion, man is supposed to enjoy autonomy as, according to him, dharma relates to his private domain and to the universal moral precepts of ancient Indian tradition. Purusa Pariksa eloquently presents the reflections on the crisis of his society in which the followers of Vedic or Sanatana dharma had begun to identify themselves as "Hindu." It was at this juncture of Indian tradition that Vidyapati introduced his idea of "man" or individual having courage, sense of discrimination (viveka), boldness of will, wit and learning (vidya). The book conveys his socio-political perspective that still appears to be relevant to the issues of national regeneration and development. Printed Pages: 132. 100222

12185 Hillary Rodham Clinton
Licing History: Memoirs
Headline; London, UK; 2003; 0747255156; First British Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15.5 Cms x 24 Cms
Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey. She writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban, middle-class America in the 1950s and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to student activist to controversial First Lady. Living History is her revealing memoir of life through the White House years. It is also her chronicle of living history with Bill Clinton, a thirty-year adventure in love and politics that survives personal betrayal, relentless partisan investigations and constant public scrutiny. Hillary Rodham Clinton came of age during a time of tumultuous social and political change in America. Like many women of her generation, she grew up with choices and opportunities unknown to her mother or grandmother. She charted her own course through unexplored terrain -- responding to the changing times and her own internal compass -- and became an emblem for some and a lightning rod for others. Wife, mother, lawyer, advocate and international icon, she has lived through America's great political wars, from Watergate to Whitewater. The only First Lady to play a major role in shaping domestic legislation, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled tirelessly around the country to champion health care, expand economic and educational opportunity and promote the needs of children and families, and she crisscrossed the globe on behalf of women's rights, human rights and democracy. She redefined the position of First Lady and helped save the presidency from an unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment. Intimate, powerful and inspiring, Living History captures the essence of one of the most remarkable women of our time and the challenging process by which she came to define herself and find her own voice -- as a woman and as a formidable figure in American politics. As reviewed by beth l. bechler on November 8, 2003 I bought this book for my birthday as a continuation of my admiration and support for Senator Clinton. I am president of a teachers' union of a small rural community and her writings and life have inspired and motivated me tremendously to "soldier on". I just finished the book and truly can say it was one of the best and most spell-binding accounts of life in the White House and of our political culture of the 90's. Also read Rudy Guilliano's book and in contrast, give living history a "two thumbs up" accolade. Have listened and seen the First Lady in Ann Arbor, MI as she supported the arts around the nation and am enamored by not only her philosophy but her rhetoric. I am also the parent of two sons who are civil minded and productive members of society and her raising of Chelsea has also been a positive role-modeling. Thanks for a refreshing and behind the scenes documentary of life with the Clintons. P.S. I've also visited Hope, ARK, on my way to visit my son in Longview, TX and loved the displays set up in the train depot! As reviewed by Ruth McVeigh on October 5, 2003 A truly absorbing book by a woman I deeply admire on all levels. As a Canadian however, I was brought to attention on the very first page by the statement "The United States had saved the world from fascism..." Excuse me, Hillary, but the U.S. did not do that alone. That sent me to the index where there is not one entry under "Canada". There is an admission on page 458 that "America can be quite insular and uninformed about other countries" -- including its biggest trading partner. I could relate with empathy to the marital upheaval and felt that in the context of everything that was happening at the time, the book provided perspective and convinced me she was right in staying with Bill. I couldn't put the book down once I started and felt it provided an excellent overview of the world during that period. As reviewed by Pamela Lathan on July 19, 2003 Initially, upon reading this book, it was implanted in my spirit to immediately contact Senator Clinton. Therefore, I searched for a website for her and was referred to her Senatorial page. Of course, I received a message back that as a non constituent there would be no reply to my message. I felt somewhat frustrated but at least satisfied that I had communicated my feelings regarding her honest and brave attempt to tell her story. I generally do not become engaged in sending reviews of books that I have read. However, I did feel that it was important for Senator Clinton to understand what impact she made on me through her writing. So many times in history, we receive the "His" perspective of what has occurred. I feel so excited that we have had an opportunity to receive "Her"story of the troubling times this country has experienced in the last 20 years in American politics. Thank you Senator Clinton regardless of your political ideology, you told your story from your heart and indicated the "mean spiritedness" that has begun to beset this country. Continue to be honest in your writing and exhibit the courage to make a difference in the direction of this country. I applaud you and your husband for displaying in living color "What God has brought together, let no man put asunder." Printed Pages: 576. 000580

Snow-clad peaks rising majestically in the horizon, mysterious lakes reflecting the mountains ringing them, massive glaciers and fast-flowing rivers - all this and more are the Himalayas, a world stamped by divinity. Here too are mountain trails winding up to far-flung corners where people in remote villages pursue age-old lifestyles, almost untouched by the contemporary world. From snow-covered Ladakh, with its stark-cold desert; to the Kashmir valley where the ancient pilgrimage trail to the Amarnath cave begins; from Himachal, with its stunning views from Shimla; to the remote Spiti valley and Uttarakhand's temple towns steeped in mythology - the journey moves on to Sikkim, crowned by the magnificent Kanchenjunga mountain, and the rainforests of Arunachal. On the way, visit fascinating people such as the Changpas tending their yaks in Ladakh; the Lepchas of Sikkim, said to be a vanishing tribe; and the Wanchos of Arunachal, the last head hunters of the world. The odyssey continues outside India, to Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, where the mystique of the Himalayas deepens. Buddhist Heritage of Odisha
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8173054665; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
The multi-religious landscape of Odisha is striking, with the present city of Bhubaneswar and its encircling hills providing evidence for the presence of shrines and images associated with Buddhism, Jainism as well as Hinduism, though their relative concentration varied over time. In this book, the focus is on various aspects of architecture related to Buddhism. One of the issues that the survey of religious architecture presented here raises is the extent to which Buddhist monastic architecture was a reflection of the practice of the religion within a regional cultural milieu. More importantly, the book addresses the complex issue of preservation of the Buddhist heritage keeping in view demands of urban planning and development on the one hand and the pressures of tourism on the other. Is the value of Buddhist heritage only to be weighed against the present benefits of commercial exploitation?The objective of the book will be to aid in the integration of the needs of archaeology and heritage in Odisha with tourism and future urban planning. Lal Kot to Lal Qila: The Architechural Heritage of Delhi (A Journey Through Time)
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8186787186; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
From Lal Kot to Lal Qila, the journey of Delhi is indeed a long one, spanning many centuries; and through which, one witnesses the emergence and abandonment of several capitals. It reveals not just ten fortifications, known to us as Lal Kot, Qila Rai Pithora, Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah, Adilabad, Firuz Shah Kotla, Purana Qila, Salimgarh and Lal Qila; but innumerable, diverse buildings that mirror the distinct art styles of the city’s multi-dynastic regimes before the proliferation of the European styled architecture during British rule. These regimes were formed by the Tomars, the Chauhans, the Mamluks, the Khaljis, the Tughlaqs, the Sayyids, the Lodis, the Surs and the Mughals. Delhi’s history is speckled with the deeds of its great kings like Anangpal, Prithviraj Chauhan, Alauddin Khalji, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, Sher Shah Suri and Shahjahan, to name just a few. More significantly, their built heritage still mystify us. Each of the monuments has a story to tell that is charming enough to make one ponder about their existence in the present day. Lal Kot to Lal Qila – The Architectural Heritage of Delhi tries to recount the significance of these structures, the various possibilities of the reasons, as also the absence of any logic sometimes behind their construction, which make the study of Delhi’s tumultuous history all the more captivating. Archaeology of Seafaring: The Indian Ocean in the Ancient Period
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8173070601; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The volume encapsulates the results of ongoing research on different aspects of the Archaeology of the Indian Ocean: archaeobotany; ethno-archaeology; maritime ethnography and numismatics. These issues have been discussed within the wider Context of movements of communities across the Indian Ocean both Fishing and sailing communities, as also travellers and traders. A range of textual sources, including those in Greek and Arabic have been analysed, together with representations in cartography, the objective being to initiate interest in an holistic approach to early seafaring activity. The contributors form part of a larger Indian Ocean community of scholars, actively involved in study and research in different parts of the region. Many of them have participated in the two international conferences held in 1994 in New Delhi and in 1996 in Lyon. The proceedings of the first, jointly edited by H.P. Ray and J.F. Salles have been published under the title: Tradition and Archaeology: Early Maritime Contacts in the Indian Ocean, Manohar publishers, New Delhi, 1996; while the second is being printed by Brepols Publishers in their Indicopleustoi series and is titled: Communautes maritimes de I'Ocean Indien.Printed Pages: 352. 101200

Indian World Heritage Sites in Context
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8173055211; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
This book on World Heritage sites in India has two objectives: one, to highlight the archaeological context and cultural landscapes relating to monuments inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list; and second, to draw attention to urban pressures that impact the conservation and preservation of many of these sites and the need for comprehensive management strategies to ensure their continued survival. While six are natural properties, the Archaeological Survey of India has twenty of the twenty-four World Heritage cultural sites in India under its administrative control. These may be categorized into: caves, churches and convents, forts, monastic complexes, mosques, palaces, rock-shelters, temples, and tombs. This list, by and large, focuses on either single monument or groups of monuments, bereft of cultural moorings. It is important that archaeological and historical inputs regarding the wider cultural milieu of World Heritage sites be introduced through site management plans, interpretation centres and heritage bye-laws to aid in holistic appreciation of the ‘monument’ or ‘group of monuments’. Clearly, there is an urgent need for change in our understanding and appreciation of not only World Heritage sites, but also policies to ensure their preservation. It is this need for change that the papers by archaeologists, historians and heritage specialists in this edited book articulate and discuss. Mausam: Maritime Cultural Landscapes Across the Indian Ocean
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8173055246; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 24 Cm
Mausam’ or Arabic ‘Mawsim’ refers to the season when ships could sail safely in the Indian Ocean and these seasonal monsoon winds underwrote both a shared culture in the past, as also the continued survival of maritime regions into the present. ‘Maritime cultural landscape’ was used by Olof Hasslof, the Swedish maritime ethnologist in the 1950s to indicate an understanding of the use of the sea by humans and included attendant coastal structures and cultural identifiers. The papers in this book examine the development of coastal settlements and architectural remains from the third millennium BCE Bronze Age to almost the present across a large part of the Indian Ocean extending from Arabia to Vietnam. A second objective of the book is to relate this understanding of the past with that of the present and to highlight the extent to which indicators of historical cultural networks provide building blocks for contemporary societies, as they work towards universal values and trans-border groupings-both of which underwrite UNESCO’s 1972 World Heritage Convention. The Convention encourages the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity, thereby focusing on the universal, rather than the local or regional. The book will appeal to readers of maritime history, as well as those involved in heritage studies. Printed Pages: 108 100002

History of Ancient India: Political History and Administration, Vol. IV
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8173054835; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
It is important to reassess, formulate and develop India's civilizational and cultural imperatives in an increasingly globalised world. The nation’s perception of its ancient history plays a major role in this. The present series on the history of ancient India was conceived with this in mind. The aim is to put forward a nationalistic, factual and objective history of the ancient Indian past in eleven volumes. The cobwebs of certain ideas that we have lived with in the past are critically examined and in many cases found wanting and discarded. The present volume, fourth in the series, picks up the thread between the end of the Mauryan dominance and the growth of major regional powers around ad 750. This includes, on the one hand, the phase of the Kushanas who represent in a way the significance of the Oxus-Indus orbit in the course of Indian history and the resurgence of the Gangetic region under the Guptas on the other. We discuss also the development of Sangam literature and the ruling dynasties like Cholas, Cheras and Pandyas. Within this frame there were other political developments, each important in their own domain. Printed Pages: 484, with 4 colour & 46 b/w illustrations. 100008
