A Resilient Asia Amidst Global Financial Crisis: From Crisis Management to Global Leadership
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8132105168; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is based on the papers presented and discussions held at a high-level regional workshop organized by the Asian Development Bank in January 2010 to discuss the impact of the global economic and financial crisis on developing Asia. It provides a clear and thought-provoking analysis of the global economic crisis from the perspective of 19 Asian countries. The papers present concrete ways in which Asian economies and financial systems can be made more responsive and resilient. The book proposes that Asian economies can capitalize on the global economic crisis by using it as an opportunity to move from crisis management to gradually assuming global economic leadership. It spells out a general framework for strengthening recovery efforts, ensuring inclusive growth and open regionalism, rebalancing Asia’s growth model, and creating greater regional cooperation for a prosperous and resilient Asia. This is perhaps the first ever book in the market to undertake an in-depth discussion about the impact and the long-term implications of the global financial crisis on economies in Asia. India's New Capitalists: Caste, Business and Industry in a Modern Nation
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178242184; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Who are the major new Indian business people? What is their social profile? Business in India was traditionally the preserve of certain ‘Bania’ communities clubbed under the Vaishya order. The term ‘Bania’, in fact, acquired a generic connotation and could refer to the village moneylender, shopkeeper, wholesaler, or large factory owner. More recently, India’s commercial ethos has changed massively with the entry of businessmen from the ranks of Brahmins, Khatris, and other castes with a predominantly scribal or administrative background. The past four or so decades have seen a further widening of the social base of Indian capital to include agrarian and allied service castes such as Kammas, Naidus, Reddys, Rajus, Gounders, Nadars, Ezhavas, Patidars, Marathas, and Ramgarhias. As a result, entrepreneurship and commerce in India are now no longer the exclusive bastion of the old mercantile castes. The social profile of Indian business has expanded beyond recognition. And, in order to do business effectively in contemporary South Asia, it is necessary to understand the culture, ethos, and ways of doing business among the region’s new trading communities. In tracing the modern-day evolution of business communities in India, this book is the first social history to document and understand India’s new entrepreneurial groups. Written accessibly, and combining analytical rigour with journalistic flair, it also contains fifteen individual case studies that embellish its general findings. ‘Business in India has grown today to being no longer limited to a few castes or families ... Damodaran’s book makes a seminal contribution to understanding the link between diverse entrepreneurial capital and the development of societies ...’—NANDAN NILEKANI ‘Damodaran presents a richly insightful analysis of the deepening of India’s business class in recent decades. The study of Indian business history has typically focused on the colonial period, and on the role played by traditional mercantile communities such as the Parsis and the Marwaris. While hagiographic works on entrepreneurs abound, India’s New Capitalists is the first serious study of Indian business in the period since Independence. Damodaran’s book is pioneering in a second respect as well: it explores the transformation of the Indian entrepreneurial class through the entry into it of large numbers of farmers-turned-capitalists.’ —RAMACHANDRA GUHA AND SUNIL KHILNANI Printed Pages: 366. 033850

Quotes of the Dalai Lama (Series: The Wisdom Tree)
Hay House/TBI; New Delhi, India; 9789380480251; Softcover; New;
This is a compilation of wonderful and inspirational quotes by one of the world?s most renowned practitioner of the 2500-year-old teachings of Buddhism, Tenzin Gyatso, popularly known as the Dali Lama. In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, not only for his personification of the goal of Tibetan Liberation, but much more so for the influence he has had on people all over the world, in guiding them on their personal spiritual quests. ? If we are to understand the true nature of our minds we must stop remembering the past and stop thinking of the future. ? True love and compassion exists when the suffering of all others become unbearable ? whether they be friends, mere acquaintances or even enemies. ? A monk who had been held captive and brutally tortured for years in an effort to force him to renounce his faith, was asked on his release if he had been afraid. He thought for a while, then smiled and said, ?Yes, I was afraid. Very afraid. I was afraid towards the end that I would lose compassion for those who tortured me? ? We must always fight for our rights and in the cause of truth. But always ensure that your fight is just and fought with a kindly attitude. ? True happiness is possible only in a society where material development co-exists with spiritual progress. Printed Pages: 112. 112939

Quotes of Osho (Series: The Wisdom Tree)
Hay House/TBI; New Delhi, India; 9789381431047; Softcover; New;
Rajneesh, as he was known, before he attained enlightenment, was born in Kushwada, Madhya Pradesh on December 11, 1931. From his early childhood he displayed a rebellious and questioning nature and insisted on raising doubts about all accepted beliefs and traditions. For him every truth had to be his own. He completed his post graduation in philosophy and for many years taught philosophy at the University of Jabalpur. He also traveled extensively all over India, debating on religious beliefs of every shade and hue. The debates usually took the form of challenges thrown by him, which orthodox religious leaders attempted to answer. He met people from all walks of life and he read practically everything that he could lay his hands on. Osho was essentially an iconoclast, who opposed all generally accepted beliefs and traditions. But this opposition was based on a deep study of all religions and beliefs. In fact the extent and depth of his knowledge and understanding of practically every known religion of the world is truly mind boggling. His discourses cover every aspect of human consciousness and spirituality and express his thoughts in clear, everyday terms. The fact that eighteen years after his death, his speeches, both in recordings and in print, are still sought more avidly, bears testimony to the fact that no matter what his detractors might say, Osho remains one of the greatest spiritual leader of our times . . . This is a compilation of 101 of his most famous quotes. Printed Pages: 112. 112940

Quotes of J. Krishnamurthy (Series: The Wisdom Tree)
Hay House/TBI; New Delhi, India; 9789380480794; Softcover; New;
Jiddu Krishnamurthy, or J Krishnamurthy, was born on May 12, 1895 in Andhra Pradesh, the eighth of eleven children, in a Telugu ? speaking Brahmin family. His father, an official in the British colonial Administration, retired in 1907 and found employment as a clerk in the headquarter of the Theosophical Society at Adyar (Chennai). During early adolescence Jiddu had a chance encounter with CW Leadbeater, a high ranking theosophist. He predicted great things for the lad and recommended him to Annie Besant, the leading light of the Theosophical society. She was as impressed as Leadbeater had been and the two took the young Krishnamurthy under their tutelage convinced that he was destined to be a great world teacher. As a result, Krishnamurthi and his brother Nitya, were privately tutored and then sent abroad for higher education. He showed great observation and mechanical skills and even in childhood could correctly disassemble and reassemble fairly complicated machinery. He authored a number of books, among them ?The First, Last Freedom,? ?The Only Revolution? and ?Krishnamurthy?s Notebook.? A large number of his collected talks and discussions have also been published. He was awarded the 1984 UN Peace Medal and two years later addressed the United Nations on peace and awareness. He died in Ojai on February 17, 1986 at the age of 90. His remains were cremated and scattered by friends and former associates in the three countries where he had spent most of his life: India, England and the United States. Krishnamurthy?s writings and the compilations of his speeches and discussions remain as popular today as they were when they were first published. This is a compilation of 101 quotes of his most famous quotes. Printed Pages: 112. 112941

Ancient Indian Massage: Traditional Massage techniques based on the Ayurveda
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121510864; Reprint; Paperback; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Massage, done according to the natural laws of human anatomy and energy flow, offers the most pleasurable benefit of all daily practices. Regular massage vibrates and energizes the skin, muscles and nerves simultaneously and helps the body become light, active and full of vitality. Body heart and vitality increase as the heart and circulatory system open up to provide fresh oxygen and energy to all parts of the system while simultaneously flushing out waste gases and chemicals. Ancient Indian scriptures which deal with health and massage say: "Diseases do not go near one who massages his feet before sleeping, just as snakes do not approach eagles." There is new acceptance of massage nowadays. In the West people are especially interested in this art as a rejuvenator and vitalizer. There is much literature available on various kinds of massage from different parts of the world, but there is no book about the ancient Indian system of massage where the art is ever popular. In India you can find people massaging people on beaches, on the banks of rivers, and in market places-apart from the privacy of homes and wrestling places (akharas). Massage of children is widespread in India practically every child and the mother of each new born infant gets regular massage, as one gets foods. Massage is part of inherent rituals in Indian life and in many states it becomes a significant ritual before marriage. The purpose of this publication is to portray simply and factually some of the principles, techniques, beauty and benefits of massage. Special formulae have been incorporated to enhance various therapeutic values. Printed Pages: 106 with line drawings. 020610

The Nation Across the World: Postcolonial Literary Representations
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195690249; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Nation across the World examines the present state of the Nation in a variety of political formations and cultural locations around the world—from smaller but no less complex nations such as Fiji, Singapore, and Trinidad, to larger former colonies such as Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, to former colonial powers such as Britain and Spain, and the one supernation of our day, the USA. In the process, a wide range of issues are explored, including colonialism, empire, race, language, ethnicity, resistance and rebellion, liberation, national self-fashioning and identity, and postcolonial migration and hybridity. The Nation is situated in relation to the sub-national and the local on the one hand and to cosmopolitan internationalism and world movements on the other. The book offers discussions not only of literary texts and intertexts but also of other cultural forms including stage performances, films, and the game of cricket. The nineteen contributors to this volume have themselves lived and worked in many countries and come from all over the globe. They include the novelists Vikram Seth and Austin Clarke, and a group of internationally distinguished academics including Homi Bhabha. 026126

Agricultural Problems in Ethiopia
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121200784; Hardcover; New; New;
Despite its long History of self-sufficiency, Ethiopia has experienced Crop failures repeatedly during the last two decades. Famine of 1972-73 led to the Death of hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians. It has been estimated that about one-fifth of the Population of Wollo province had died from starvation. In 1984, the Country again underwent a prolonged period of drought and famine with a severity that approached that of 1972-73. It affected about one-fourth of the total population. With the continuous fall in Agricultural output in more recent years, it is likely that another human tragedy of vast proportion may occur.It is said that the Poor performance of Agriculture was mainly due to drought which affected agricultural sector adversely. With drought the area under Irrigation had been reduced. But the Loss of so many lives in Ethiopia was not simply due to lack of rainfall. Other factors besides drought too have contributed to the lethal proportions of the famine. The main aim of this book is to assess the performance and strategies followed for the development of the agricultural sector during the pre and post Revolutionary periods and pinpoint various constraints to its development.Printed Pages: 264. 105661

The Rani of Jhansi: Gender, History and Fable in India
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 1107042801; Hardcover; New; New;
Rani Lakshmi Bai is an iconic figure of the nationalist movement in India. Her fight against the imperialist power has a significant place in the cultural and feminist history of South Asia. She is considered not only a heroine and a great warrior but also a protector of her people in Jhansi. Her pictures on horseback with her son tied to her back and a sword in one hand represent her as an embodiment of feminine power or Shakti. This book uses fictional cinematic and popular representations of the Rani to analyze the convergence of colonial and postcolonial literary historical sexual and cultural imperatives in the figure of this legendary woman. This book also extends the discussion to what constitutes the gendered subaltern historical archive. By analyzing a range of literary and cinematic texts produced between 1857 and 2007 it tries to understand the various agendas that are at stake in the use of the Rani as a figure of nationalist Indian history and imperial British narrative. There is also an attempt to compare representations of the Rani in both these contexts. Endorsements The author brilliantly reveals how the rule of colonial and postcolonial difference forecloses the possibility of archival or historical ‘settling’ of the figure of the Indian woman. This is an essential reading for anyone interested in the ‘woman question’ one that resonates in both historical and contemporary debates of representation and politics. — Inderpal Grewal Yale University Singh provides a compelling genealogy of production under colonial conditions that works its way through an impressive array of archives and genres from the aesthetic experiments of both British and Indian cultural producers to the more recuperative cultural efforts of postcolonial feminists and/or historians. — Anjali Arondekar University of California Santa Cruz It is one of the first works in the arena of South Asian Studies to provide a feminist account of a rebellion against empire; a theme totally unique and much needed in explicating India’s complex relationship to Britain. Moreover the author’s intellectual gambit of bypassing numerous routine historico-political accounts that are regurgitated to bolster colonial and/or postcolonial theses is noteworthy. — Gita Rajan Fairfield University It is a rebellious book in its own way. Eschewing the ‘historical’ Rani of Jhansi in favor of the Rani of literature fable folk history film and rumor Singh undertakes an extraordinary engagement with this pivotal figure of the politics and aesthetics of the ‘colonial encounter.’ The book takes as central motifs the sexual configurations of ‘India’ through the metaphor of the Rani. —Christian Lee Novetzke University of Washington.Printed Pages: 202. 101428

The South Asia Story: The First Sixty Years of US Relations with India and Pakistan
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8132101219; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book deals with the complex and changing U.S. relations with India and Pakistan in the sixty years since World War II. It carries a series of brief sketches on how twelve U.S. presidents, starting with Franklin Roosevelt, perceived and dealt with South Asia. The author proposes that though there are broad historical patterns in which the policies and decisions of these American presidents can be classified, yet their unique personalities and ideological predispositions also played a role in the political choices they made. Since none of them ever had any substantial experience with South Asia prior to assuming office, probing the reasons for their preferences and decisions is an enlightening and interesting exercise. With the unfolding of the South Asia policies of the new U.S. President, Barrack Obama, this book will provide the much needed background study to the readers. Printed Pages: 136. 033019

Poisonous Plants of Livestock
Chaukhamba Sahitya/ Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The preparation of this handbook was undertaken because of the great lack of readily available and reliable information on the subject in English scientific literature. Many of the facts were known to A Few interested persons, but many Others were so scattered here and there in technical reports and journals that they were scarcely known even to expert chemists and botanists. The bringing of this information together in some sort of order has involved considerable labour extending over several years, but if the volume be found helpful to those for whose use it has been prepared I shall feel more than gratified. That the subject is of importance is fully realised by farmers and veterinary surgeons alike, for the annual loss of stock due to poisonous plants, though not ascertainable, is undoubtedly considerable. It was felt that notes on mechanical injury caused by plants and on the influence of plants and on milk might usefully be included, as in some degree related to poisoning; this has the reform been done. One the other hand, a number of cultivated plants (e.g. Rhus, Wistaria) which are poisonous have not been included because exotic and hardly likely to be eaten by stock. Fungi generally also find no place in the volume, as they are sufficiently extensive to deserve a volume to themselves, and are far less readily identified than flowering plants. The dividing line between plants, which are actually poisonous, and those which are only suspected is far from clear, but a division was considered desirable for the convenience of the reader, and an endeavour has been made to give a sound but brief statement as to the present information on plants poisonous to live stock, with symptoms, toxic principles, and a list of the more important references to the bibliography in relation to each plant included.Printed Pages: 125. 100983

T.R.V. Murti: (The Builders of Indian Philosophy Series Gen. Ed. R. Balasubramanian)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121510775; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
T.R.V. Murti was an original and leading thinker among the Indian philosophers of the twentieth century. He had a brilliant philosophical mind, a love of analysis and argument, and a respect for texts, especially the ones with which he disagreed, as seen in his most important book, The Central Philosophy of Buddhism. With both traditional “Shastri” training and a Western style Ph.D., Murti was able to bring both strengths to his writing and teaching. Murti knew everything by heart, all the Sutra texts, the Upanisads and other philosophical classics, Panini’s grammar, and Patanjali’s “Great Commentary” and other core texts. Upon that foundation, he evaluated doctrines and ideas. Though a philosopher of the classical type, he was also alive to the latest philosophical currents of his day and effectively related the wisdom of traditional teaching to the contemporary questions. It was this last quality that made him a most sought after teacher by students from around the world. Murti spoke with such eloquence and authority that few would dare to interrupt him. He represented the best of Indian philosophical tradition to the world through his teaching at places such as Oxford, Copenhagen, Harvard, Hawaii, and McMaster University in Canada. This book offers an overview and assessment of Murti’s scholarship on Buddhism in its Brahmanical context, Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism, Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of spirit. The book begins with a biography of Murti and a discussion of the philosophical influences upon him. Also included is a complete list of Murti’s writings. Printed Pages: 148. 000362

Thinking and Destiny: The Descent of Man, The Eternal Order of Progression
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8120817834; Hardcover; New; New;
In Thinking and Destiny, something new, although older than time, is now made known to the world--about Consciousness. The information is largely about the makeup of the human, where man comes from, what becomes of him; it explains what thinking is; it tells how a thought is created, and how thoughts are exteriorized into acts, objects and events, and how they make his destiny. Destiny is thus shown to be self-determined by thinking; and the process of re-existence and the after-death states are told in detail. A single reading of any one chapter of Thinking and Destiny brings rich rewards in new understanding of life`s puzzling mysteries. To read the entire book is to come nearer to knowledge of one`s destiny and how to shape it than is possible through study of anything previously written in the English language. Both the casually curious glancer at books and the most avid seeker for knowledge will be intrigued by the index, which lists more than 400 subjects in Thinking and Destiny, and by the fifteen chapter headings in the Table of Contents, which identify the 156 sections. The Foreword contains the only pages in which Mr. Percival uses the first personal pronoun. Here he relates some of the amazing experiences through which he was able to grasp the knowledge he transmits, and to acquire the ability to do so.Printed Pages: 1044. 102210

Muslim Political Thought and Administration
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8121501962; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This is the most comprehensive study of the political theories of Muslim thinkers. His survey of Muslim political thought begins with the Ideal State as depicted in the Quran, and provides an insight not only into the working of the political mind of some of the most eminent Muslim thinkers but also gives a running commentary on the working of the political institutions under which they lived in order to find out whether there was any link between their political ideas and the atmosphere in which they flourished. Since it was first published in 1942, the learned author has revised it several times, including a mass of new data and a number of explanatory notes in order to make the book more comprehensive, instructive and equally useful to the student and the scholar. This scholarly work is, in fact, interesting and thought provoking. Printed Pages: 228. 017189

Terrain path optimization using the connectivity graph approach applied to GIS data Structures
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2009; 9514292391; New;
The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate alternative methods for converting GIS data representing terrain traversability conditions into a connectivity graph representation, enabling the determination of optimum terrain traversal paths, and implement them in the GIS environment. In addition to implementing variations of the conventional grid-based approach, an alternative grid-based method as well as a vector-based method for terrain path optimization is proposed and implemented in this study. Furthermore, special emphasis is put on the post processing of terrain paths. 115231

Kummat Kuvat: Näkökulmia valokuvan Kulttuureihin
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2016; 9522227366; New;
Käsityksemme modernista elämästä on teknologiaa, erikoistumista ja tulevaisuuteen tähyävää kehitysoptimismia. Siihen sisältyy kuitenkin muutakin: särmikkäitä fantasioita ja kuvaoikkuja – kaihoisaa kumman kaipuuta. Kummat kuvat syventyy yhdeksässä artikkelissaan modermin kuvakulttuurin unohdettuihin varhaisvaiheisiin. Lukialle avautuu näköalapaikka marginaalin tuntumassa: valokuvien ja postikorttien äärellä, viihteen ja taiteen rajamaastossa. Aikakausi, jonka historiankirjoitus on pukenut rationalismin kuosiin, paljastaa salaisen viehtymyksensä fantasiaan, poikkeavuuksiin ja eri taiteiden välimaastossa viihtyvään visuaaliseen magiikkaan. Kummat kuvat havahduttaa ja saa pysähtymään kuvien eteen. Nykyajan digitaalisessa kuvavirrassa tekee hyvää muistella sadan vuoden takaista visuaalista murrosta – aikakautta, jolloin kuvia tuotettiin villimmin kuin koskaan aikaisemmin. FT Harri Kalha on taidehistorian ja sukupuolentutkimuksen dosentti Helsingin yliopistossa sekä visuaalisen kulttuurin tutkimuksen dosentti Turun yliopistossa. Printed Pages: 280. 114237

Muodon Vuoksi: Lasin ja keramiikan Klassikoita
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9522224022; New;
Muodon vuoksi kertoo suomalaisen muotoilun sankaritarinan elävästi, historiaa ja esineyksilöitä kunnioittaen. Kohdevaloihin asettuvat innovatiivinen muotokieli, tekniset oivallukset ja taiteelliset ihanteet: esineet muuttuvat elämyksiksi. Muotoiluklassikot henkivät aikaa, jolloin sisukas valtio nousi sodan raunioista suunnannäyttäjäksi. Kansallinen yhteishenki ja usko kauniimpaan tulevaisuuteen kirjattiin näkymättömänä viestinä aikakauden esineisiin. Kirjaan valittujen teosten myötä lukija pääsee samalla kurkistamaan maailmanluokan yksityiskokoelmaan, jonka ovet ovat tähän asti pysyneet kiinni. Printed Pages: 335. 114255

Kokottien Kultakausi: Belle Époquen mediatähdet modernin naiseuden Kuvastimina
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9522224723; New;
Printed Pages: 354. 115492

Nasal Motifs in Maya Iconography
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2006; 9514109945; New;
The book covers all media of artistic expression employed by Maya artists that have survived until now. This allows Harri Kettunen to explore Maya iconography in a radically different and much more profound way and to raise Art Historical questions concerning the development of styles and the representational qualities of artistic media. The application of this method and of research presented in this book can be used not only to define regional styles, artistic innovations, and the evolution of new ideas and ideologies. It can also be used to date and locate works of art with no or little understood archaeological context. This new methodology will have to be taken into account by all future scholarship in the field. Printed Pages: 780. 114304

Myrkyttäkää, Ruiskuttakaa, Hävittäkää: Ruotsalaisten ja Suomalaisten Maatalouden Ammattilehtien Kasvinsuojeluvalistus 1940-1980
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2000; 9517462115; New;
Toisen maailmansodan aikana kehitetyt uudet kasvinsuojeluaineet olivat osaltaan vauhdittamassa tehomaatalouden läpimurtoa Euroopassa ja Pohjois-Amerikassa. Maatalouden ammattilehdistä tuli ensivaiheessa tärkeä kasvinsuojelutietouden levityskanava viljelijöille. Torjunta-aineista välitettiin pelkästään positiivista kuvaa aina 1950-luvun lopulle saakka. Luonnonsuojelutahojen ja kriittisten tutkijoiden kiinnostuminen kemiallisten kasvinsuojeluaineiden aiheuttamista terveys- ja ympäristöhaitoista pakotti ammattilehdet tarkistamaan kasvinsuojeluvalistuksen sisältöä ja tavoitteita. Kasvinsuojelukysymykset yhteiskunnallistuivat ja politisoituivat ammattilehtienkin palstoilla. Printed Pages: 211. 114061
