Death-Ritual and Social Structure in Classical Antiquity
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1992; 0521374650; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
In this innovative book Dr Morris seeks to show the many ways in which the excavated remains of burials can and should be a major source of evidence for social historians of the ancient Graeco-Roman world. Burials have a far wider geographical and social range than the surviving literary texts, which were mainly written for a small elite. They provide us with unique insights into how Greeks and Romans constituted and interpreted their own communities. In particular, burials enable the historian to study social change. Ian Morris illustrates the great potential of the material in these respects with examples drawn from societies as diverse in time, space and political context as archaic Rhodes, classical Athens, early imperial Rome and the last days of the western Roman empire. Contents 1. The anthropology of a dead world; 2. ‘Mos Romanus’: cremation and inhumation in the Roman empire; 3. ‘Dem bones’: skeletal remains; 4. Taking it with you: grave-goods and Athenian democracy; 5. Monuments to the dead: display and wealth in classical Greece; 6. Famous last words: the inscribed tombstone; 7. At the bottom of the graves: an example of analysis; 8. Conclusion; Bibliographical essay; Bibliography; Index. Printed Pages: 284 with 48 line diagrams and 12 tables. Brand new copy. Syntactic Change: A Minimalist Approach to Grammaticalization
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2003; 0521790565; First Edition; Paperback; New; 228 x 152 Mm
The phenomenon of grammaticalization - the historical process whereby new grammatical material is created - has attracted a great deal of attention within linguistics in recent years. However, until now no attempt has been made to provide a general account of this phenomenon in terms of a formal theory of syntax. The aim of this new and original book is to do precisely that. Using Chomsky’s Minimalist Program for linguistic theory, Roberts and Roussou show how this approach gives rise to a number of important conceptual and theoretical issues concerning the nature of functional categories and the form of parameters, as well as the relation of both of these to language change. Drawing on examples from a wide range of languages, they construct a general account of grammaticalization with implications for linguistic theory and language acquisition. • First formal treatment of grammaticalisation • First book-length study of diachronic syntax using minimalism • Relates language to linguistic theory and language acquisition Contents Introduction; 1. Parameters, functional heads and language change; 2. T-elements; 3. C-elements; 4. D-elements; 5. Theoretical consequences. Printed Pages: 288 with 5 line diagrams. 012769

12726 Ibn Hasan
The Central Structure of the Mughal Empire and Its Practical Working Up to the Year 1657 with a Foreword By Sir E. Denison Ross
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1980; 8121502292; Second Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
The Central Structure of the Mughal Empire is the most complete work describing the organization of the administrative machinery of the central structure of the Mughal government under Akbar and his two immediate successors, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. It covers the period between the year 1560, when Akbar began to rule and the year 1657 when Shah Jahan ceased to rule. As has been rightly pointed out by Sir Dension Ross in his Foreword to the volume, Ibn Hasan's work 'must always for a companion volume to the Ain-i-Akbari, and it will be studied by all serious students of Mughal history.' The assessment of Sir Dension Ross is not an exaggeration since the book covers the whole ground in a manner never before attempted and the author has based the work entirely on original sources both in the MS form or the printed ones. These sources include the chronicles of the period, contemporary Persian works and manuscripts on the various aspects of administration of the Mughal empire, collections of letters and correspondence, biographies and works on political theory by Muslim jurists and other writers besides the European travellers' records and modern works. Some of the original sources have been utilized for the first time in the present work; for instance Chahar Chaman by Chandra Bhan Brahman, a contemporary writer during Shah Jahan's reign, which ranks second only to Akbar Nama from the point of view of its utility for the practical knowledge of the administration of Shah Jahan's reign, has been taken into account for the first time in the present book. The book is divided into three parts; the first dealing with the king and his position in the state and the transaction of the state business by him. The second part deals with the reorganization of the vizarat under Akbar and besides describing the powers and functions of the ministers as heads of departments also includes the description and analysis of the internal working of each department substantiating the analysis by the historical facts of the period. The third part deals with the judicial system of the empire while the fourth and the last chapter summarizes the conclusions. Underlying Ibn Hasan's analysis is the thesis that Akbar's policy was derived from the experience of the past and he not only devised a system which contributed to the prosperity of his subjects-both the Hindus and the Muslims alike-but also solved the problem of the vizarat and the nobility thereby resulting in the continuation of the policy under his successors Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The Eternal Spring: Sarchashma-e-abadi
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8188204897; Hardcover; New; New;
Urdu poetry is a universe of lustrous pictures that presents in words of varying hue, a delicacy of thought, and depth of meaning. Every word, every simile and metaphor bears within itself a whole world of meaning, and thus is the virtue of a great language that represents a celebrated civilisation. This is the kind of poetry that can be rendered easily into English without hurting its poetic quality because it is free of the unnecessary ornamentation common to all Eastern poetry. Like most Indians of the current age, Idrak Bhatty too has been nurtured in both Eastern and Western cultures. The accent of these poems has its own distinctive identity; their rhythm and idiom reflecting contemporary awareness. The audio CD includes a selection of poignant ghazals recited by Tom Alter, Uday Chandra and Chandar Khanna. Printed Pages: 300 with CD. 112009

Developing Society: Emerging Challenges
Raj Publications; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789381234310; Softcover; New;
Development refers to “a process through which the potentialities of an object or organism are released, until it reaches its natural, complete, full-fledged form.” India as a nation took a complete U- turn in the year 1991 when it jettisoned the path of socialistic pattern of controlled and guided economy to usher in liberalized and market guided globalized economic system to march on to the west-style open market economy. Since then, two decades have passed; the experience of last two decades of the reform has not boarded well for the Indian economy. The onslaught of western mode of economic growth has been so exhaustive, forceful and complete that the Indian nation finds itself in a quagmire of contrast, contradiction and dilemma. 110889

Modernism and the Art of Muslim South Asia
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8121512409; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
The pioneering work traces the emergence of the modern and contemporary art of Muslim South Asia in relation to transnational modernism and in light of the region's intellectual, cultural, and political developments. Art historian Iftikhar Dadi here illuminates the art and writings of major artists ranging from the late colonial period to the era of independence and beyond, revealing the complex richness of aesthetic developments in twentieth-century Muslim South Asia. Dadi demonstrates how a wave of artists associated with Pakistan-men and women, many of whom moved among several South Asian countries and England during the course of their careers-re-imagined critical aspects of their heritage and contributed to the development of transnational modernism in the postcolonial era. Dadi looks at the stunningly diverse artistic production of key artists, including Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Zainul Abedin, Shakir Ali, Zubeida Agha, Sadequain, Rasheed Araeen, and Naiza Khan. Dadi shows how, beginning in the 1920s, these artists addressed the challenges of modernity by translating historical and contemporary intellectual conceptions into their work, re-working traditional approaches to the classical Islamic arts, and engaging the modernist approach toward subjective individuality in artistic expression. In the process, they dramatically reconfigured the visual arts of the region. By the 1930s, these artists had embarked on a sustained engagement with international modernism in a context of dizzying social and political change that included decolonization, the rise of mass media, and development following the national independence of India and Pakistan in 1947. Bringing new insights to such concepts as nationalism, modernism, cosmopolitanism, and tradition, Dadi underscores the powerful impact of translational ism during this period and highlights the artists' growing embrace of modernist and contemporary artistic practice in order to address the challenges of the present era. Gospels of Deconstructed Adamic Myth
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8182202655; Hardcover; New; New;
In the present volume, author ventures into the challenging task by identifying and unveiling the ideological underpinnings operative in the construction and deconstruction of the Adamic myth in the Judeo-Christian scenario. He delves deep into the intricacies of the literary forms of myths, metaphors and Midrash involved in interpreting, legitimizing, or reinforcing later-day ethno-historical claims of a particular group of people against the prevailing amicable or inimical background. The ideological assertions of these literary forms, enforcing the consciously chosen traditional or hereditary authority, seek to overpower the currently popular, rational, legitimate or democratic authority. At this juncture, one cannot turn a blind eye to the legitimate or questionable political transactions on the ideological sites by the powers vying with each other to gain the dominant space. In exposing these ideological interplays, the author deploys the tools from the world of the biblical, mythological, theological, literary, historical, anthropological, linguistic, and hermeneutical disciplines. Genesis Myth of Manifold Meanings
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2008; 818220268X; Hardcover; New; New;
This book excavates the many layers of meaning hidden beneath the simple-sounding biblical myth of Adam and Eve. It critically scrutinizes the myth from the points of view of academic disciplines like history, literature, cultural anthropology, cognitive psychology and sociology, religion and spirituality. Its underlying assumption is that scriptural stories ideologically sum up and reinforce the knowledge, thought and behavior structure of ancient or established cultural identities. Hence it brings to the interpretation of the myth not only the traditinal methodological tool of belief, but also the critically unconventional tool of suspicion.It does it in the expectation and the hope of inspiring scholars of all religions and cultures to look critically at their own ethnic traditions and histories and so avoid the danger that fundamentalism threatens the globe with. The Cilappatikaram: The Tale of the Anklet
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143031961; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
One of the world's masterpieces, The Cilappatikaram (5th century ce) by Ilanko Atikal is India's finest epic in a language other than Sanskrit. It spells out in unforgettable verse the problems that humanity has been wrestling with for a long time: love, war, evil, fate and death. The Tale of an Anklet is the love story of Kovalan and Kannaki. Originating in Tamil mythology, the compelling tale of Kannaki—her love, her feats and triumphs, and her ultimate transformation to goddess—follows the conventions of Tamil poetry and is told in three phases: the erotic, the heroic and the mythic. This epic ranks with the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as one of the great classics of Indian literature and is presented for the first time in a landmark English verse translation by the eminent poet R. Parthasarathy, making it accessible to a wider audience. Printed Pages: 448. 024495

Traditional Martial Practices in Odisha
Shubhi Publications; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8182901359; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm Ileana Citaristi
The book by the celebrity danseuse Padmasree, Ileana Citaristi vividly captures the martial arts of Odisha, specially the Paik dance of a bygone era, when Paiks (derived from padatik) infantry foot soldiers of the then kalinga (the ancient name of Odisha) kept themselves in war-readliness by rigorously practicing the armed and unarmed combat styles. The book is all about such forgotten stories of valor, the skills developed with of without the swords and spears, all for the sake of protecting the motherland, the highest form of dedication and sacrifice, which is faithfully portrayed by the dancer-writer. Interwoven with the martial art fomr are the rituals, the code of ethics and the religious practices which are still being practiced in the districts of Odisha. The book will give the reader an insight into these seemingly innocuous practices but suffused with folklores and associated with historical events that speak volumes of the heroism of the hereditary foot soldiers. Meticulously researched and well documented the book provides a wealth of information and can be valuable reference material to any student of history, culture and art forms. Here is a dancer who is occidental by birth, belongs to a distant land but holds a lens to the glorious history of the oriental, through its indigenous martial art forms and thereby scripts a tale of the ordinary Paiks but extraordinary brave foot soldiers of medieval Odisha. 12755 Ilija Trojanow; Translated from the German By The Author with Ranjit Hoskote
Along the Ganga: To the Inner Shores of India
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0-1460-3165-1; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
From icy Gaumukh, the source of one of the world’s most celebrated rivers, Ilija Trojanow began a remarkable two-month journey: down the Himalayas, past the great cities of Allahabad, Varanasi and Patna, to Gangasagar, where the river meets the sea. Travelling by inflatable boat, on foot, by bus and overcrowded trains, he moved through landscapes where the past and the future, mythic imagination and hard reality come together, and in this book he recounts for us the stories that he heard and experienced during the journey. The glacier at Gaumukh is receding, he tells us: is it due to global warming or, as the Brahmavaivarta Purana foretells, is the Ganga going underground, having taken her share of sins, to await the next golden age? Has the demon Taraka taken over the earth again, he wonders, or will the Tehri Dam really bring succour to the lives of millions? As he observes and investigates, Trojanow also offers prayers to his ancestors, meets Naga sadhus at the Kumbh Mela, witnesses death ceremonies, and talks to engineers and activists with divergent views on how best to live with the Ganga. A travel book that is an unusual mix of reportage and storytelling, Along the Ganga is a vivid portrait not only of the mighty, sacred river but also of a deeply traditional as well as a vibrantly modern India.Printed Pages: 184. 039734

Printed Pages: 282. 114504

Camel Karma: Twenty Years Among India’s Camel Nomads
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789384030636; Softcover; New;
According to myth, the camel was created by Lord Shiva at the behest of his consort Parvati. Parvati shaped a strange five-legged animal from clay and asked Shiva to blow life into it. At first Shiva refused,saying that the misshapen animal will not fare well in the world, but later gave in. He folded the animal’s fifth leg over its back giving it a hump, and commanded it to get up, “uth”. That is how the animal got its name.The camel then needed someone to look after it, so Shiva rolled off a bit of skin and dust from his arm and made out of this the first Raika. Historically, the Raika of Rajasthan have had a unique and enduring relationship with camels. Their entire existence revolves around looking after the needs of these animals which, in turn, provide them with sustenance, wealth and companionship. When German veterinarian, Ilse Köhler-Rollefson, arrives in Rajasthan in 1991, she is Immediately enthralled by the Raikas’ intimate relationship with their animals but also confronted with their existential problems.This is the story of the quest that follows to save a globally unique and humane animal culture and find a place for the camel in rapidly changing India.It is a journey that is often exasperating, sometimes funny, but keeps revealing unexpected layers of rural Rajasthani mores. A travelogue of a sort, this book takes us deeply into the diverse cultures that make Rajasthan such a fascinating place. 109691

Rabindranath Tagore: One Hundred Years of Global Reception
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125055681; Hardcover; New; New;
When Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for his own English translation of Gitanjali (Song Offerings), he became the first non-European to do so, achieving immediate fame.Translations in other languages of this and other works followed. Reams were written on his writings, and his personality. As aworld citizen, Tagore aimed at bringing the ‘East’ and the ‘West’ together for an inclusive humanism. His was assumed to be the Voice of India—indeed of Asia and the colonised world. The Nobel Prize gave him the authority to speak, and the intellectual elite of many countries listened. The editors of Rabindranath Tagore: One Hundred Years of Global Reception had asked Tagore experts worldwide to narrate how the Bengali author was received from 1913 until our time. Their thirty-five essays arranged by region or language group inform us about translations, the impact of Tagore’s visits, and his subsequent standing in the world of letters. Tagore’s reception while often enthusiastic was not always adulatory, occasionally undergoing dramatic metamorphoses, and diverse political and social milieus and cultural movements responded to him differently. This nuanced global reception is for the first time dealt with comprehensively and systematically in this volume presented as a work of reference. These essays remind us that Tagore’s works keep being reprinted or retranslated for he continues to be relevant to modern readers.Printed Pages: 692. 101974

Lived Islam in South Asia: Adaptation, Accommodation and Conflict
Orient BlackSwan/Social Science Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 97888187358473; Softcover; New;
Lived Islam in South Asia: Adaptation, Accommodation and Conflict explores the everyday religious lives of Muslims in South Asia. The book argues that Islam cannot be understood through the works of theologians alone, for whom it is a formal, uniform and rigid system of beliefs and practices. Popular Islam, or Islam as it is practised by millions of Muslims in South Asia, has an empirical validity and is a dynamic process of adjustment and accommodation as well as conflict with other religions, with which it coexists. he book is divided into four parts. Part I: Concepts and Interpretations brings coherence and meaning to the confusion of everyday life. Part II: Lived Islam and its Historical Context, explores the distinctive developments of Islam in Kashmir and Nepal. Part III: Conflict and Accommodation analyses various aspects of both religious conflicts and accommodation. For instance, harmonious relations between Muslims and Hindus united by common worship at Muslim shrines in Karnataka is an empirical fact and common worship unites the marginalized Shia women in Hyderabad with women of other religions. Part IV: The Presence of Sufism describes how marginalized Hindus and Muslims find acceptance in Sufism.Printed Pages: 334. 101795

Pakistan Before and After Osama
Lotus Collection/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8174369090; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Explicating the pre- and post-Bin Laden Pakistan, Imtiaz Gul relooks at questions plaguing the nation: Why and how this country became home to the worlds most wanted terrorist? Bin Ladens escape from the Tora Bora Mountains in Eastern Afghanistan in December 2001 to his last hideout in Abbottabad, and to find answers to the dozens of questions surrounding his stay in Pakistan as well as the US blitz raid in the wee hours of 2 May 2011. Had the worlds most wanted person at all been living in Pakistan for all those years, how did he manage to stay undetected, together with his big family, including an eight-month-old son? Who from within the security establishment provided the safety network to the family? What stakes did the Pakistan Army and the ISI have at all if they were complicit in protecting him? Why did Bin Laden fascinate certain people and groups within Pakistan? Pakistan: Before and After Osama is an attempt to analyze present-day Pakistan in the light of two narratives one stitched together in Washington and the other woven in Pakistan about the checkered history of its relations with Pakistan and its involvement in the region, and how differences over how to tackle Al Qaeda and its local affiliates continue to sour and strain the ties between the two long-time allies. Drawn to Life: Sketchbooks of Rini Dhumal
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8189995537; Softcover; New;
Drawing the line is the oldest form of visual artistic expression known to man, from pre-historic cave drawings onwards. Every culture in the world, across continents and time-frames, has a rich store of traditional art which is drawing-based.The ‘power of the line’ to enclose or open up space, create or suggest form, is almost infinite. And the artist uses drawing in an infinite number of ways. Some might draw as practice, to strengthen or develop technique, to keep private visual notes, as experimental and exploratory exercises; others make a drawing as a finished work in its own right. Rini Dhumal does all of the above. One only has to look through her sketchbooks to see this.Piles of sketchbooks yield a forest of pages covered with drawings that cross years and continents. There is history here, and geography, nature and culture. Drawing upon a storehouse of historical details, the splendours of her childhood, and anecdotal references from various travels, she creates a vivid aesthetic in her art-making. Rooted Landscapes: The Art of Rini Dhumal
Mapin Publishing; Ahmedabad, India; 2011; 8189995456; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Rini Dhumal has experimented with every conceivable medium ranging from print-making, graphics and ceramics, with fantastic results, and created a cultural vocabulary uniquely her own. Her sketchbooks, with jottings of her initial responses before they take shape as paintings or other artworks, reveal the coming together of her hand and spirit. Drawing upon a storehouse of historical details, the splendours of her childhood, and anecdotal references from various travels, she creates a vivid aesthetic in her art-making. In her pictorial world, nostalgia and sombre tones meet to create powerful protagonists that exude raw primal energy. We see representations of memory and recollection, distilled by her imagination which emerges from deep convictions and courage. Incarnations of the quintessential Indian Woman, quiet, with aloof confidence and devoid of any fragility, dominate the earthy landscapes. Stories of displacement, chance encounters and tales of far-away lands, integrating with symbolism and perception, are all part of her oeuvre. One comes upon, at once, the universality and intimate familiarity in the fluid forms. Printed Pages: 248 with 256 colour maps and 3 photographs. 036558

The shamans of the Changpa-nomads of the Ladakhi highlands of Changthang belong to the Tibetan culture. Modernity has reached even their remote world and challenges their life basis in a dramatic way. Their traditional healers, the shamans, recognize the "disease" of modernity the clearest. They envision the presence and future in trance and devine possession. Listening to their prayers and songs in trance, which bewail so much more violence in our times ("more blood than ever before flows down the valleys"), their admonitions get a remarkable actuality. (The manuscript of this book was finished shortly after the 11th of September 2001). Hermetic amnesia follows the trance of the Changpa shamans. In the present book the author shows how one can understand them despite amnesia, how one can decipher their bridging of old a modern times and, in this way, bring their message also to the modern world.
