Matrimonial Mocktales
Om Books International; New Delhi, India; 9789384225704; First Edition; Softcover; New;
All Rhea had ever wanted was a perfect Mills & Boon romance. But considering the world she lived in, it was probably too much to ask. She was raised in a traditional and conservative Sikh family in Jalandhar where it was unfathomable for a girl to stay unmarried till age 25, let alone 33. But here she was, a single, independent girl in search of Mr. Right. Her search had started at a very early age when, at 15, she was engaged to a 23-year-old boy! But that story didn’t go as her parents had planned and everything unravelled quite rapidly. Little did she know that the repercussions of this faulty step would haunt her for a long, long time. In her pursuit of the right man, there would be many wrong ones, making the better part of her early young life revolve around finding ‘a suitable boy’. Between a domineering mother, a hapless but supportive father and the slew of boys who go in and out of her life, Rhea tries her best to make sense of her chaotic world.Printed Pages: 208. 105077

Man in Indian Tradition: Vidyapati's Discourse on Purusa
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8173052174; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
The Book deals with the image of "man" that was posited in the medieval period when north Indian Society was beset with crisis due to the internal conflict of sectarian ideologies as well as the onslaught of the Islamic politico-religious power. This state of socio-cultural and political situation was perceived by Vidyapati, a great poet and statesman of Mithila (north-eastern part of Bihar) in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century, as that of crisis of man. He was probably the first intellectual of north India who recognized the significance of such socio-political and religious issues as "what is man?", "what is manliness?", "what is dharma?", etc., in a situation of multi-religious social and political order. There is no space for jati/varna/kula in the structure of man presented by him. Even in the sphere of religion, man is supposed to enjoy autonomy as, according to him, dharma relates to his private domain and to the universal moral precepts of ancient Indian tradition. Purusa Pariksa eloquently presents the reflections on the crisis of his society in which the followers of Vedic or Sanatana dharma had begun to identify themselves as "Hindu." It was at this juncture of Indian tradition that Vidyapati introduced his idea of "man" or individual having courage, sense of discrimination (viveka), boldness of will, wit and learning (vidya). The book conveys his socio-political perspective that still appears to be relevant to the issues of national regeneration and development. Printed Pages: 132. 100222

Vereinskultur und Zivilgesellschaft in Nordosteuropa
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2012; 3412201367; New;
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9526804201; New;
The Non-Literary Latin Letters: A study of their syntax and Pragmatics
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2009; 9516533639; New;
This work is about Latin letters to authorities, superiors, colleagues, friends and family. These texts, written on papyri, ostraca and wooden tablets, offer valuable and often rare evidence of Latin as it was used outside the literary texts in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. They bring to light the Latin of such language users who otherwise have largely remained invisble to posterity. In this study is described and analyzed certain features of the syntax of these letters. The focus is on sentence structure. Key questions include: How did the writers organize the information they wanted to convey to the addressee? Were they able to render longer and more complicated structures coherently? What strategies did they use in such cases? What kind of influence did spoken language have on the language of these written texts? Printed Pages: 189. 114685

12729 Hillary Rodham Clinton
Licing History: Memoirs
Headline; London, UK; 2003; 0747255156; First British Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15.5 Cms x 24 Cms
Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey. She writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban, middle-class America in the 1950s and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to student activist to controversial First Lady. Living History is her revealing memoir of life through the White House years. It is also her chronicle of living history with Bill Clinton, a thirty-year adventure in love and politics that survives personal betrayal, relentless partisan investigations and constant public scrutiny. Hillary Rodham Clinton came of age during a time of tumultuous social and political change in America. Like many women of her generation, she grew up with choices and opportunities unknown to her mother or grandmother. She charted her own course through unexplored terrain -- responding to the changing times and her own internal compass -- and became an emblem for some and a lightning rod for others. Wife, mother, lawyer, advocate and international icon, she has lived through America's great political wars, from Watergate to Whitewater. The only First Lady to play a major role in shaping domestic legislation, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled tirelessly around the country to champion health care, expand economic and educational opportunity and promote the needs of children and families, and she crisscrossed the globe on behalf of women's rights, human rights and democracy. She redefined the position of First Lady and helped save the presidency from an unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment. Intimate, powerful and inspiring, Living History captures the essence of one of the most remarkable women of our time and the challenging process by which she came to define herself and find her own voice -- as a woman and as a formidable figure in American politics. As reviewed by beth l. bechler on November 8, 2003 I bought this book for my birthday as a continuation of my admiration and support for Senator Clinton. I am president of a teachers' union of a small rural community and her writings and life have inspired and motivated me tremendously to "soldier on". I just finished the book and truly can say it was one of the best and most spell-binding accounts of life in the White House and of our political culture of the 90's. Also read Rudy Guilliano's book and in contrast, give living history a "two thumbs up" accolade. Have listened and seen the First Lady in Ann Arbor, MI as she supported the arts around the nation and am enamored by not only her philosophy but her rhetoric. I am also the parent of two sons who are civil minded and productive members of society and her raising of Chelsea has also been a positive role-modeling. Thanks for a refreshing and behind the scenes documentary of life with the Clintons. P.S. I've also visited Hope, ARK, on my way to visit my son in Longview, TX and loved the displays set up in the train depot! As reviewed by Ruth McVeigh on October 5, 2003 A truly absorbing book by a woman I deeply admire on all levels. As a Canadian however, I was brought to attention on the very first page by the statement "The United States had saved the world from fascism..." Excuse me, Hillary, but the U.S. did not do that alone. That sent me to the index where there is not one entry under "Canada". There is an admission on page 458 that "America can be quite insular and uninformed about other countries" -- including its biggest trading partner. I could relate with empathy to the marital upheaval and felt that in the context of everything that was happening at the time, the book provided perspective and convinced me she was right in staying with Bill. I couldn't put the book down once I started and felt it provided an excellent overview of the world during that period. As reviewed by Pamela Lathan on July 19, 2003 Initially, upon reading this book, it was implanted in my spirit to immediately contact Senator Clinton. Therefore, I searched for a website for her and was referred to her Senatorial page. Of course, I received a message back that as a non constituent there would be no reply to my message. I felt somewhat frustrated but at least satisfied that I had communicated my feelings regarding her honest and brave attempt to tell her story. I generally do not become engaged in sending reviews of books that I have read. However, I did feel that it was important for Senator Clinton to understand what impact she made on me through her writing. So many times in history, we receive the "His" perspective of what has occurred. I feel so excited that we have had an opportunity to receive "Her"story of the troubling times this country has experienced in the last 20 years in American politics. Thank you Senator Clinton regardless of your political ideology, you told your story from your heart and indicated the "mean spiritedness" that has begun to beset this country. Continue to be honest in your writing and exhibit the courage to make a difference in the direction of this country. I applaud you and your husband for displaying in living color "What God has brought together, let no man put asunder." Printed Pages: 576. 000580

Buddhist Heritage of Odisha
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8173054665; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
The multi-religious landscape of Odisha is striking, with the present city of Bhubaneswar and its encircling hills providing evidence for the presence of shrines and images associated with Buddhism, Jainism as well as Hinduism, though their relative concentration varied over time. In this book, the focus is on various aspects of architecture related to Buddhism. One of the issues that the survey of religious architecture presented here raises is the extent to which Buddhist monastic architecture was a reflection of the practice of the religion within a regional cultural milieu. More importantly, the book addresses the complex issue of preservation of the Buddhist heritage keeping in view demands of urban planning and development on the one hand and the pressures of tourism on the other. Is the value of Buddhist heritage only to be weighed against the present benefits of commercial exploitation?The objective of the book will be to aid in the integration of the needs of archaeology and heritage in Odisha with tourism and future urban planning. Lal Kot to Lal Qila: The Architechural Heritage of Delhi (A Journey Through Time)
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8186787186; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
From Lal Kot to Lal Qila, the journey of Delhi is indeed a long one, spanning many centuries; and through which, one witnesses the emergence and abandonment of several capitals. It reveals not just ten fortifications, known to us as Lal Kot, Qila Rai Pithora, Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah, Adilabad, Firuz Shah Kotla, Purana Qila, Salimgarh and Lal Qila; but innumerable, diverse buildings that mirror the distinct art styles of the city’s multi-dynastic regimes before the proliferation of the European styled architecture during British rule. These regimes were formed by the Tomars, the Chauhans, the Mamluks, the Khaljis, the Tughlaqs, the Sayyids, the Lodis, the Surs and the Mughals. Delhi’s history is speckled with the deeds of its great kings like Anangpal, Prithviraj Chauhan, Alauddin Khalji, Muhammad bin Tughlaq, Sher Shah Suri and Shahjahan, to name just a few. More significantly, their built heritage still mystify us. Each of the monuments has a story to tell that is charming enough to make one ponder about their existence in the present day. Lal Kot to Lal Qila – The Architectural Heritage of Delhi tries to recount the significance of these structures, the various possibilities of the reasons, as also the absence of any logic sometimes behind their construction, which make the study of Delhi’s tumultuous history all the more captivating. Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8173070601; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The volume encapsulates the results of ongoing research on different aspects of the Archaeology of the Indian Ocean: archaeobotany; ethno-archaeology; maritime ethnography and numismatics. These issues have been discussed within the wider Context of movements of communities across the Indian Ocean both Fishing and sailing communities, as also travellers and traders. A range of textual sources, including those in Greek and Arabic have been analysed, together with representations in cartography, the objective being to initiate interest in an holistic approach to early seafaring activity. The contributors form part of a larger Indian Ocean community of scholars, actively involved in study and research in different parts of the region. Many of them have participated in the two international conferences held in 1994 in New Delhi and in 1996 in Lyon. The proceedings of the first, jointly edited by H.P. Ray and J.F. Salles have been published under the title: Tradition and Archaeology: Early Maritime Contacts in the Indian Ocean, Manohar publishers, New Delhi, 1996; while the second is being printed by Brepols Publishers in their Indicopleustoi series and is titled: Communautes maritimes de I'Ocean Indien.Printed Pages: 352. 101200

Indian World Heritage Sites in Context
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8173055211; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
This book on World Heritage sites in India has two objectives: one, to highlight the archaeological context and cultural landscapes relating to monuments inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list; and second, to draw attention to urban pressures that impact the conservation and preservation of many of these sites and the need for comprehensive management strategies to ensure their continued survival. While six are natural properties, the Archaeological Survey of India has twenty of the twenty-four World Heritage cultural sites in India under its administrative control. These may be categorized into: caves, churches and convents, forts, monastic complexes, mosques, palaces, rock-shelters, temples, and tombs. This list, by and large, focuses on either single monument or groups of monuments, bereft of cultural moorings. It is important that archaeological and historical inputs regarding the wider cultural milieu of World Heritage sites be introduced through site management plans, interpretation centres and heritage bye-laws to aid in holistic appreciation of the ‘monument’ or ‘group of monuments’. Clearly, there is an urgent need for change in our understanding and appreciation of not only World Heritage sites, but also policies to ensure their preservation. It is this need for change that the papers by archaeologists, historians and heritage specialists in this edited book articulate and discuss. Mausam: Maritime Cultural Landscapes Across the Indian Ocean
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8173055246; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 24 Cm
Mausam’ or Arabic ‘Mawsim’ refers to the season when ships could sail safely in the Indian Ocean and these seasonal monsoon winds underwrote both a shared culture in the past, as also the continued survival of maritime regions into the present. ‘Maritime cultural landscape’ was used by Olof Hasslof, the Swedish maritime ethnologist in the 1950s to indicate an understanding of the use of the sea by humans and included attendant coastal structures and cultural identifiers. The papers in this book examine the development of coastal settlements and architectural remains from the third millennium BCE Bronze Age to almost the present across a large part of the Indian Ocean extending from Arabia to Vietnam. A second objective of the book is to relate this understanding of the past with that of the present and to highlight the extent to which indicators of historical cultural networks provide building blocks for contemporary societies, as they work towards universal values and trans-border groupings-both of which underwrite UNESCO’s 1972 World Heritage Convention. The Convention encourages the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity, thereby focusing on the universal, rather than the local or regional. The book will appeal to readers of maritime history, as well as those involved in heritage studies. Printed Pages: 108 100002

History of Ancient India: Political History and Administration, Vol. IV
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8173054835; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
It is important to reassess, formulate and develop India's civilizational and cultural imperatives in an increasingly globalised world. The nation’s perception of its ancient history plays a major role in this. The present series on the history of ancient India was conceived with this in mind. The aim is to put forward a nationalistic, factual and objective history of the ancient Indian past in eleven volumes. The cobwebs of certain ideas that we have lived with in the past are critically examined and in many cases found wanting and discarded. The present volume, fourth in the series, picks up the thread between the end of the Mauryan dominance and the growth of major regional powers around ad 750. This includes, on the one hand, the phase of the Kushanas who represent in a way the significance of the Oxus-Indus orbit in the course of Indian history and the resurgence of the Gangetic region under the Guptas on the other. We discuss also the development of Sangam literature and the ruling dynasties like Cholas, Cheras and Pandyas. Within this frame there were other political developments, each important in their own domain. Printed Pages: 484, with 4 colour & 46 b/w illustrations. 100008

Sanghol and the Archaeology of Punjab
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8173053936; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 31 Cm
“The archaeological site of Sanghol situated 40 kilometres from Chandigarh on the National Highway to Ludhiana is exceptional in many ways. One of the very few sites extensively excavated in post-Independence Punjab, it was settled as early as the second millennium BC and has continued in occupation well into the present. The cultural deposit is rich and varied, especially in its diverse range of coins, seals and sealings, and this marks Sanghol out from other contemporary settlements. The discovery of exquisitely sculpted pillars of a stone railing carefully buried in the vicinity of a Buddhist stupa brought Sanghol into the limelight in 1985 and large-scale excavations were undertaken. Remains of Buddhist monasteries and stupas have been preserved and stand testimony to the flourishing nature of religious culture in the area. Based on unpublished data, this edited volume places the finds from Sanghol in the wider context of the archaeology of Punjab. It traces the history of archaeology in the region from the first excavation in 1830 in undivided Punjab during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1801-1839) at the Buddhist stupa at Manikyala, located north-west of Rawalpindi. Interest in the archaeology of Punjab has changed over time from a fascination for Alexander the Great and his Indian campaign in the nineteenth century, to the unchecked collection of antiquities, and to large-scale excavations at Taxila, leading finally to the establishment of museums in pre- and post-Partition Punjab to house the finds. Changes in the research agenda of archaeologists was matched by transformation of the landscape as a result of the large-scale digging of canals in the early twentieth century and widespread agricultural operations in post-Independence Punjab. Within this wider canvas, the focus of the volume, however, remains on an in-depth analysis of the archaeology of Sanghol and its significance in the history of Punjab. Kosalananda Mahakavyam
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8187418036; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
As the Raghuvamsa in the form of Kavya literature rings with praises of Raghu's digvijaya, so also the palm-leaf manuscript kosalananda rings with the whole History of dakshina Kosala i.e. Ancient Chhattisgarh in the beautiful Sanskrit verse from which historians may collect enough pebbles on its shore to build the complete history of Chhattisgarh (1000-1664). The present Kavya was lying in oblivion and is being published for the first time. Though this Kavya history of chhattisgarh opens itself to the large numbers of lovers of Sanskrit throughout the world and at once becomes a part of the vast Sanskrit literature with a history of thousands of years. Kosalanand Mahakavyam is sthe first ever Sanskrit Mahak-avya (written in 1664 by Gangadhar Mishra) on the history of Kosala i.e. Chhattis-garh. There in on doubt that the keen student of the history of Chhattisgarh may find something substantial in the Mahakavya to feed his own cultural ambition in the domain of research and antiquities.Printed Pages: 207. 104058

Bangladesh: The Next Afghanistan
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0761934014; First Edition; Paperback; New;
In recent years, Bangladesh has experienced an alarming rise in Islamist fundamentalism. The world began to take serious notice of this after the grenade attack on the Awami League`s rally in Dhaka on 21 August 2004 almost succeeded in killing off the entire top leadership of the party. This book shows that terrorist acts such as this are part of a systematic attempt to destroy Bangladesh`s secular and democratic political parties, as well as its vibrant intellectual and cultural life, and to convert the country into a hardline Islamic one. The author further argues that the headquarters of Islamic terrorism is shifting from Afghanistan to Bangladesh, which he describes as a `soft` state with an ineffective government and police force, and which Islamist groups, with their organized and well-armed cadres, can easily dominate. Islamists are being systematically placed in key positions in government, and an Islamist state within a state is being built for the ultimate takeover of Bangladesh as the base for Islamist—including Al Qaeda and Taliban—operations in South and Southeast Asia. This lucid, hard-hitting and well-documented book analyses in detail the circumstances—historical, social, cultural and political—which account for the rise of violent Islamist fundamentalism in Bangladesh, a country known for its cultural plurality and religious tolerance. The author also discusses the chances of halting the process, through a determined and well-strategized effort by those committed to keeping Bangladesh a moderate and tolerant modern Islamic nation. Tradition and Modernity: India and Japan Towards the Twenty-first Century
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121508053; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
To talk of modernization is a daunting task, much more when it comes to a comparison of countries like India and Japan. Being a collection of nineteen papers, ten Indian and nine Japanese, presented at the two Indo-Japanese seminars in 1990 and 1992 and revised, this book aims exactly at doing it. This is, to quote from the late Professor Sukhmoy Chakravarty, who was the moving spirit on the Indian side of those seminars, "the first of a series of dialogues" between the scholars of the two countries in social sciences and humanities. The papers cover the philosophical and religious expressions of modernization and its economic, technological, social, political, and international substance. They also cover the self images of India and Japan and the images of each other. Each subject is treated not isolated but in wider perspective. Together they represent the so far unprecedented attempt to introduce Japan to the Indian readership. Some water has flowed into the Indian and the Pacific oceans since those seminars were held. But this book will provide a solid ground upon which further and more sustainable dialogues can be held, and are actually being planned. This book is being published in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of India's freedom. Printed Pages: 320. 002224

The Wisdom of Compassion: Stories of Remarkable Encounters and Timeless Insights
Three Rivers Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 0593071824; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Wisdom of Compassion offers rare insights into the Dalai Lama’s life as he interacts with remarkable people from all walks of life. In these deeply engaging behind-the-scenes stories we see not only the Dalai Lama at his most human, and most humane, but also the way he approaches the world with humour and optimism. As he empathizes with those who are suffering, and demonstrates the tangible benefits of practising forgiveness and compassion, the Dalai Lama reveals the many lessons he has learned, including how * his collaborations with leading neuroscientists, psychologists, teachers and students from around the world have taught him how to educate the heart; * his inspiring friendship with a blind Irishman, the only person he calls his hero, has taught him how one can overcome adversity; * through his encounters with illiterate grandmothers learning how to harness solar power for their communities, a beggar girl, and his soulmate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, he has discovered how compassion can be translated into action. Enhanced by the Dalai Lama’s seven decades of practice and illuminated through captivating anecdotes, The Wisdom of Compassion can help readers to lead more fulfilling lives. The Dalai Lama also shows how, when we open our hearts and minds to others, we are on the surest path to true happiness. 037374

The Acquisition of Complex Sentences
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521831938; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
This book presents the first comprehensive study of how children acquire complex sentences. Drawing on observational data from English-speaking children aged 2 to 5, Holger Diessel investigates the acquisition of infinitival and participial complement clauses, finite complement clauses, finite and nonfinite relative clauses, adverbial clauses, and coordinate clauses. His investigation shows that the development of complex sentences originates from simple non-embedded sentences and that two different developmental pathways can be distinguished: complex sentences including complement and relative clauses evolve from simple sentences that are gradually expanded to multiple-clause constructions, and complex sentences including adverbial and coordinate clauses develop from simple sentences that are integrated in a specific biclausal unit. He argues that the acquisition process is determined by a variety of factors: the frequency of the various complex sentences in the ambient language, the semantic and syntactic complexity of the emerging constructions, the communicative functions of complex sentences, and the social-cognitive development of the child. • The first ever comprehensive study of how children acquire complex sentences • Based on observation of five English-speaking children between the ages of 2 and 5 • Looks at the acquisition of a broad range of different constructions, such as complement clauses, relative clauses, adverbials and co-ordinates Contents 1. Introduction; 2. A dynamic network model of grammatical constructions; 3. Towards a definition of complex sentences and subordinate clauses; 4. Infinitival and participial complement constructions; 5. Complement clauses; 6. Relative clauses; 7. Adverbial and co-ordinate clauses; 8. Conclusion. Jesus Lived in India: His Unknown Life Before and After the Crucifixion
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 0143028294; Reprint; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Why has Christianity chosen to ignore its connections with the religions of the East, and to dismiss repeatedly the numerous claims that Jesus spent a large part of his life in India? This compelling book presents irrefutable evidence that Jesus did indeed live in India, dying there in old age. The result of many years of investigative research, Jesus Lived in India takes the reader to all the historical sites connected with Jesus in Israel, the Middle East, Afghanistan and India. As well as revealing age-old links between the Israelites and the East, the evidence found by theologian Holger Kersten points to the following startling conclusions: In his youth Jesus followed the ancient Silk Road to India. While there he studied Buddhism, adopting its tenets and becoming a spiritual master. Jesus survived the crucifixion. After the ‘resurrection?Jesus returned to India to die in old age. Jesus was buried in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, where he continues to be revered as a saintly man. The tomb of Jesus still exists in Kashmir. The author, Holger Kersten, specializes in religious history. He studied theology and pedagogics at Freiburg University, Germany and has travelled extensively in the Middle East and India. He is the co-author of The Jesus Conspiracy. Printed Pages: 296. 029092

Intuition: Its Nature and Uses in Human Experience
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8120817729; Hardcover; New; New;
Given the foregoing view of intuition, as it is generally understood, the challenge which has been set before the author in writing this book was to legitimate the belief in and use of intuition by presenting an explanation as to its nature and uses which is not at odds with what rigorous thinkers take knowledge to be. The core idea of that has been take in intuition to be in the writings of Sarvepalli RAdhakrishnan. Briefly, intuition, so viewed, is taken to be an integral process of the mind, which culminates in an act of insight. The process involves reasoning, but the insight in which the process culminates does not.Intuition, is not a form of knowledge; rather it is only one means to knowledge which together with reason, sense-experience, and revelation (in the Heideggerian sense) make possible knowledge and understanding. 102193
