Spanda-Karikas: The Divine Creative Pulsation
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120808169; Ninth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The Spandakarikas are a number of verses that serve as a sort of commentary on the Siva-sutras. According to Saivagama, the divine consciousness is not simply cold, inert intellection. It is rather spanda, active, dynamic, throbbing with life, creative pulsation. In Siva-sutras, it is the prakasa aspect of the divine that is emphasized; in Spandakarikas, it is the vimarsa aspect that is emphasized. Together, these two books give us integral view of Saiva philosophy. Ksemaraja has written a commentary on Spandakarikas, titled Spanda-nirnaya. He is fond of sesquipedalian compounds, long and windy sentences, but he is very profound in the comprehension of the subject and so cannot be ignored. The author tried to provide a readable translation of both the karikas and the Spanda-nirnaya commentary. Each karika (verse) is given both in Devanagari and Roman script, followed by its translation in English. This is followed by Ksemaraja's commentary in Sanskrit. Then follows an English translation of the commentary. After this, copious notes are added on important and technical words. Finally, a running exposition of each karika in author's own words is given.Printed Pages: 233. 102325

Embodied Vision: Interpreting the Architecture of Fatehpur Sikri
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098484; Hardcover; New; New;
Departing from the conventional path of describing and explaining the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri, Professor Jaimini Mehta delves into a series of representations the Mughal city has been subjected to and concludes that there is an inexorable tension at its core embodied in the constantly shifting axes, complex rhythms, raising or lowering of the ground planes, juxtapositions of mythical symbols and the conflicting pulls of traditions and human will. The space of Fatehpur Sikri is revealed to us through perception more than through geometry.Professor Mehta’s unconventional interpretation of the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri emanates from his exploration of the history of architectural representation and leads him to conclude that the tools of designing, representation and analysis, i.e. various kinds of drawings, which we normally use today, did not exist in sixteenth-century India when Fatehpur Sikri was built. These drawings, which assume our “mind’s eye” hovering above the city and taking in the whole of reality at once, have failed to represent the existential lived experience of inhabitation of architecture.Printed Pages: 160 with 71 colour & 36 b/w illustrations. 106508

Rethinking Modernity: Towards Post Rational Architecture
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8189738720; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 24 Cm
Has the project to usher in Modernity run its full course and is now ready to be replaced by something called Post-Modern? Re-examining the very idea of Modernity in architecture, and drawing from a number of diverse sources such as philosophy, social science, art and technology, Prof. Mehta argues that the normal historical progression of architectural thought and production suffered an epistemological break in mid-18th century, caused by the separation between architecture and engineering and resulted in increasing rationalization of architecture. Critical writings of several post-Renaissance scholars and academicians aided this process. Prof. Mehta refers to this as “Academic Architecture”. While the pre-Renaissance scholars were content to codify the practice of architecture, the new writings actively sought to construct an identity of architecture to align it with modern science and industry. The overwhelming need to validate architecture from the logico-mathematical perspective favored the cerebral over the existential qualities of architecture. Prof. Mehta asserts that alternatives to the rationalist and positivist narratives always existed in the West and also in several non-Western cultures but the very strong “foregrounding” of Rationalism confined them to the academia. His insightful analysis indicates that the contours of Post Rational architecture are already visible in the works of several contemporary architects. Nyayapravesakasastra of Baudh Acarya Dinnaga
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8120833503; Hardcover; New; New;
Nyayapravesakasastra, written by the famous Buddhist preceptor, Dinnaga known as the father of Buddhist logic, in the fourth century of the Vikram era, is an important work in the field of logic. On this text there is a commentary known as Sisyahita, written by the preceptor Sri Haribhadrasuri, religious son of Yakinimahattara in the seventh century of the Vikram era and an old commentary known as Nyayapravesakavrttipanjika written on palm leaves by Sri Parsvadevagani in the twelfth century of the Vikram era. There are also some ancient and modern mss. of the commentaries. Taking the text of Nyayapravesa-kavrttipanjika of venerable sage Shri Punyavijayji, as the basis, this has been critically edited in a systematic way. The text of Nyayapravesakasastra, was translated into the Bhota language of Tibet and into Chinese language many years ago. Besides, this text has also been translated independently from Chinese language into Bhota language. Pandit Vidhushekhara Bhattacharya, in 1927, published its Tibetan translation in the Roman script. This translation might be extremely useful for the scholars of Tibetan language. Therefore, it has been included as the fifth appendix of this publication in original Tibetan script.Printed Pages: 161. 102451

Yaugika Siddhiyan: Ek Vivecanatmaka Adhyayana
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8186921443; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
India is invariably the homeland for Yoga being entrusted to the offsprings of Rishis-Maharshis of the olden times. Yoga is for the physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual development of a human being. At one end the attainment of salvation through one's spiritual awakening and knowledge of the eternal truth is considered as the essence of yoga, on the other an efficient yogi can attain the special mystical powers through yoga sadhana. All this has been illustrated in the book Patanjaliyogadarshana of Maharshi Patanjali. The attainment of mystical powers should not be the prime object of yogic exercises, but most of the practitioners adhere to them to attain para-natural powers only. Though it is impossible in today's scientific age to easily believe in these mystical powers, this book majestically proves citing various examples, that these superhuman powers are not mere illusions but can be assimilated and achieved easily even in the materialistic world of today. These powers can be accomplished by practising the specifically prescribed path of the yogic philosophy. Such powers, when achieved should not make a person self-indulgent, but these should be used for the public welfare only.This book, undoubtedly, will be beneficial not only for those who specialize in yoga but also for a layman.Printed Pages: 247. 100471

Linearization of Chains and Sideward Movement
The MIT Press; Cambridge, Massachussets, USA; 2004; 0262140853; First Edition; Paperback; New; 6 x 9 Inches
This highly original monograph treats movement operations within the Minimalist Program. Jairo Nunes argues that traces are not grammatical primitives and that their properties follow from deeper features of the system, and, in particular, that the phonetic realization of traces is determined by linearization computations coupled with economy conditions regarding deletion. He proposes a version of the copy theory of movement according to which movement must be construed as a description of the interaction of the independent operations Copy, Merge, Form Chain, and Chain Reduction. Empirical evidence to support this claim includes instances of "sideward movement" between subtrees in a derivation. According to this analysis, the linearization of chains in the phonological component constrains sideward movement so that it is possible to account for standard properties of multiple gap constructions, including parasitic gap and ATB constructions, without construction-specific operations or principles that are not independently motivated. Theoretical linguists will find Linearization of Chains and Sideward Movement of great interest both theoretically and empirically. The version of the copy theory of movement proposed by Nunes will stir debate and shape future research in the field. Printed Pages: 224. 003198

Rani
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0143102109; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 x 20 Cm
When thirteen-year-old Manikarnika leaves her father’s court-in-exile to marry the king of Jhansi, little does she realize the burden of greatness awaiting her. As she grows from a headstrong and spirited girl into a young woman wise beyond her years, learning to put aside personal disappointments and desires to emerge as a capable queen beloved of her people, she watches the political landscape around her shift and change chillingly under the control of the powerful East India Company. When the British annex Jhansi after the tragic deaths of her infant son and husband, Rani Lakshmibai turns for help to Robert Ellis, an officer in the East India Company and Jhansi’s political agent. But as war clouds gather and they find themselves ranged on either side of an impassable divide, his attempts to assist her, while staying loyal to his own government, are as destined to falter as is their increasing emotional attachment. Doomed love becomes a dramatic and unforgettable metaphor for Empire even as Lord Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse is all set to alter forever the contours of not only their lives but also the land they have both come to love. While Ellis is sent away in disgrace, Lakshmibai, in the company of her comrades-inarms and childhood playmates Tantia Tope and Nanasahib,isinexorably drawn into the vortex of the Great Mutiny of 1857, with catastrophic consequences. But one glance over the fence at his lovely but reticent neighbour Maya is enough to launch him on a path of no return. He finds himself playing friend, partner, co-conspirator, and finally the entirely unexpected role of saviour as Maya, suffocating under the weight of a loveless marriage and a suspicious husband, turns to him for help. Together, they flee India with Maya’s one-year-old daughter Anjali and life seems to hold all the promise of a new beginning, until destiny strikes … With characteristic ease and insight, Jaishree Misra writes in her new novel of the transforming power of love and of the joy and heartbreak of giving yourself to another, for better or for worse. 000980

Regulation, Institutions and the Law
Social Science Press and Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8187358289; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The twelve papers in Regulation, Institutions and the Law try to understand the specific context within which regulation has unfolded in a country like India, which is different in many ways from that of the United States and Western Europe. The volume also dwells on how these regulatory issues flow across national boundaries and affect the international arena in this age of globalization. While some papers discuss conceptual issues others engage with how the political economy affects regulation both in terms of domestic political economy and in relation to pressures from international organizations. Banning the import of carpets, which use child labour, is a case in point. Yet other papers discuss some specific sectors in the economy, which are regulated, such as, finance, telecommunications and competition policy, in relation to the problem of regulation itself. Vignettes en Route
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523049; Softcover; New;
Nineteen forty-two, Delhi. A young Bengali England-returned journalist finds himself in the capital as the controversy over the Cripps Mission gathers momentum. Crafted in the form of an accidental travelogue, collated from the letters of the young man to a lady friend, Drishtipaat is a deeply reflective account of the capital city, its complex multi-layered history and myths, with liberal injections of humor and spirit. Peopled with vividly drawn characters, Jajabor’s eye for detail has created a perfect version of the petit bourgeoisie microcosm of the times. In the backdrop, there is the looming sense of nationalism, as it attempts to intervene and transform the discourse of the day. A fascinating account of Delhi in the 1940s, this remarkable book will charm the reader, and particularly show how Delhi continues to be a city where immigrants come and meet people who are exact replicas of characters born of Jajabor’s pen!.Printed Pages: 184. 106561

Europe, India, and the Limits of Secularism
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0199460973; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
For several decades now, commentators have sounded the alarm about the 'crisis of secularism'. According to them, saving the secular state from political religion is a matter of survival for societies characterized by religious diversity. In this narrative, instances of intolerance and violence are conveniently attributed to a failure in adhering to secular norms. Jakob De Roover argues against this search for an external factor to explain the increasing pressures on the model of liberal secularism. Delving deep into its history—which is closely intertwined with the Western cultural context—he brings to light the major flaws internal to this model. Focusing on Asian societies which have historically accommodated a higher degree of religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity than Europe, this book questions the validity of imposing the liberal-secular model outside the West. Taking the constraints of the liberal model of religious toleration and the secular state as its focal point of inquiry, this book examines how the normative model of liberal secularism crystallized in modern Europe and how it determined the European understanding of Indian culture.Printed Pages: 296. 104497

Islam in South Asia: A Short History
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125046585; Softcover; New;
Islamic and Islamicate South Asia has become a focal point in academia, esp. since 9/11. Where did South Asian Muslims come from? How did they fare in interacting with Hindu cultures? How did they negotiate identity as ruling and ruled minorities and majorities? Islam in South Asia aims to synthesize the long history of Islam as an intrinsic part of Indian society seeing the vantage point of such a complex history as a series of cultural encounters that were mutually energizing. Part I covers early Muslim expansion and the journey of the Arabs into South Asia and their formative phase in context of initial cultural encounter which produced a unique blend of Islamicated culture (app. 700–1300). Part II views the establishment of Muslim empire, cultures oscillating between Islamic and Islamicate, centralized and regionalized power, when Muslims became part of the Indian social fabric embodying cultural change through new urban centers and intellectual hubs as well as the expanding agricultural societies (app. 1300–1700). The third cluster is composed in the backdrop of regional centralization, territoriality and colonial rule, displaying processes of integration and differentiation, of marginalisation and privatisation of Muslim cultures in colonial setting, that helped the cause of masculinized Islam to create new forms of socialization which threatened to tear apart the tradition of tolerance in Muslim societies (app. 1700–1930). Tensions between Muslim pluralism and singularity evolving in public sphere as religious identity politics in the period of high nationalism followed by post-colonial predicaments make up the fourth cluster (app. 1930-2002).Printed Pages: 536. 101772

Religious Pluralism in South Asia and Europe
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195669754; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Until the early-1970s, there was a significant lack of interest in religion among scientists of all disciplines. Scholars, including those engaged in the study of religion, were convinced that religion would disappear from history as well as the public sphere to become a purely private matter. Against all predictions, however, religion has returned very much to the public domain. Alarmingly though, the relationship between different religions in a shared social space is characterized by antagonism rather than by creative co-existence, reducing the complex network of different religious attitudes to closed systems such as Huntington's clash of civilizations. This collection of twelve essays by some of the most eminent scholars in the field brings an extraordinary range of voices and experiences to the dialogue on religious pluralism. The discussion gains immensely from being presented in a comparative perspective. Mark Haberlein discusses the historical roots of plurality in Europe. T N Madan's paper focuses on the historical and organizational aspects of the Indic religions vis-a-vis Islam and Christianity. In a comparative study of Christianity and Islam in the global context, Christian W Troll argues that religions have an important role in achieving justice and harmony between nations, economic blocks, and cultural groupings. Claire de Galembert's paper deals with the discrepancy between the common and ideologically dominant representation which imagines that only political identity is relevant in the public domain, on the one hand, and actual practice (recall the 'headscarf controversy') of the French laicity on the other. Ashis Nandy discusses the issue of ethnic and religious violence through the complex experiences, interpretations, and insights of sensitive scholars and writers in the context of South Asia. This rich and challenging collection also includes other voices, all of which will interest scholars of sociology, religion, and culture, as well as the general reader interested in the public debates on the possibility of harmonious co-existence between peoples of diverse religious faiths. Aligarh District: A Historical Survey from Ancient Times to 1803 AD
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8121504392; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
This three-volume book gives a complete survey of the surviving Hindu and Jaina temples in the northern half of Karnataka from the period AD 1000-1300. These temples form a homogenous body of monuments that is one of the most interesting in India. From an architectural point of view it is most interesting of all, because an important characteristic of Indian temples-is taken to its limits. Nowhere else in India, or for that matter in the entire world, the decoration of architecture with architecture is so abundant and so detailed. The ambition to be complete required a lot of fieldwork, because about 50 of the 220 monuments included have not been published before. But not only ‘new’ temples were visited; without exception all temples presented in this book were seen at least once. During each visit many photographs were made. All of the approximately 1400 photographs published in the second and third volumes were made by the author. In addition to their scholarly value, the present volumes are very valuable for any layman with interest in architecture. This is because the monuments of the period are so extremely interesting for their sophisticated play with architectural elements, and because the photographs are so carefully taken and so instructive. With regard to photographs this book easily surpasses all others on old Indian temples. Printed Pages: 857 with 203 figures, 184 plates and 15 maps. 001201

Welfare, Incentives, and Taxation
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195686500; Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Professor Mirrlees found a solution to one of the key problems in modern economic research dealing with asymmetric information, that is, where different decision-makers have different information. The solution given by him was so powerful that it has provided the basis, not only for the construction of taxation systems around the world today, but for our understanding of a whole range of other markets and systems. This volume brings together for the first time twenty-three of his seminal papers, published as well as unpublished, on welfare economics, tax theory, public expenditure, contract theory, growth theory, and development economics. The collection contains some of the most influential articles in economics in recent times. 019693

As You Think: The Bestselling Empowerment Classic
Yogi Impressions; Mumbai, India; 8188479004; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 7.5 x 5 Inches
"As You Think is the single most powerful book I have ever read. It has been my companion for twenty years, and it has changed my life." - from the Introduction by Marc Allen, author of 'Visionary Business' In 1904, a relatively unknown Englishman named James Allen wrote a little book called 'As a Man Thinketh.' The book has become one of the world's greatest self-help books - "self-empowerment" is a better term - for it not only reveals to us that the keys to success are within our own minds, it shows us how to use these keys to unlock the greatest fulfillment we can imagine. In this revised edition, author Marc Allen updates this classic, changing language that has become dated or obsolete, and honing the clarity of the message. He makes 'As You Think' gender inclusive, showing how these principles are truly universal and apply to everyone, regardless of sex, age, race, beliefs, social class, or education. 'As You Think' is a simple yet powerful reminder that "all we achieve and all that we fail to achieve is the direct result of our own thoughts." We are the masters of our destinies. There can be little doubt that Adolf Hitler changed the lives of everyone who lived in Europe and altering the lives of future generations throughout the world. No one has ever attracted more attention from biographers and historian than Adolf Hitler. This short book is an outcome of the conversation taken place between the author, James Bunting and the tyrant Hitler. It shows how and for what reason this non-descript, ill-educated son of simple parentage became ruler of a country and one of the worst tyrants the world has ever known.Printed Pages: 176. 105436

Temple Gateways in South India: The Architecture and Iconography of the Cidambaram Gopuras
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8121506662; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
First published in 1963, Temple Gateways in South India remains the only book-length study devoted exclusively to the gopura. These are the most visually impressive and structurally ambitious buildings in the great temple complexes of South India. The book is also a detailed account of the pre-eminent group amongst gopuras, the four outer gopuras of the Sri Nataraja temple at Cidambaram. Their architecture, sculpture and iconography, recorded here in great detail, constitute moreover the benchmark for the statuary of the later period, about which relatively little is known. Illustrated with 181 photographs and 27 line-drawings, and a detailed index, Temple Gateways in South India is required reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in the art and architecture of India and an indispensable item for any research library with an interest in the subject. The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 812503921X; Hardcover; New; New;
For two thousand years the disparate groups that now reside in Zomia (a mountainous region the size of Europe that consists of portions of seven Asian countries) have field the projects of the organised state societies that surround them— slavery, conscription, taxes, corvee labour, epidemics and warfare. Significantly, writes James C.Scott in this iconoclastic study, these people are not innocent who have yet to benefit from all that civilization has to offer; they have assessed state-based civilizations and have made a conscious choice to avoid them. The book is essentially an “anarchist history” , the first-ever examination of the huge literature on state-making that evaluates why people would deliberately and reactively remain stateless. Among the strategies employed by the people of Zomia to remain stateless are physical dispersion in rugged terrain; agriculture practices that enhance mobiliy; pliable ethnic identities; devotion to prophetic, millenarian leaders; and maintenance of a largely oral culture that allows them to reinvent their histories and genealogies as they move between and around states.Printed Pages: 462. 101781

Indian Buddhist Theories of Persons
Routledge; London, UK; 0415318351; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In this book, Vasubandhu's classic work, "Refutation of the Theory of a Self" is translated and provided with an introduction and commentary. The translation, the first into a modern Western language from the Sanskrit text, is intended for use by those who wish to begin a careful philosophical study of Indian Buddhist theories of persons. Special features of the introduction and commentary are their extensive explanations of the arguments for the theories of persons of Vasubandhu and Pudalavadins, the Buddhist philosophers whose theory is the central target of Vasubandhu's refutation of the theory of a self. History of Indian and Eastern Architecture: Rev. and ed. With additions, Indian Architecture by James Burgess and Eastern Architecture by R. Phene Spiers 2, vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121503841; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present reprint of Fergusson's History of Indian and Eastern Architecture is being brought out to meet the growing demand from scholars for whom this book is still the basic work of reference on Indian Architecture. In the preface to the second edition (1910) of this work James Burgess wrote, "Though descriptions of Indian monuments may be written in various ways, no one could pretend to take up the systematic study of Indian Architecture without the aid of this work, and no history of Architecture can be scientifically written without appropriating the principles Mr. Fergusson showed how to apply." This work, in a way, fulfils the desire of Fergusson. In the Preface to the first edition of the book (1876) the author expressed his desire to open an hitherto unknown field of Indian Architecture and to "give an impulse to its study, and assist in establishing Indian Architecture on a stable basis, so that it may take its true position among the other great styles which have ennobled the arts of mankind." It is needless to go into the merits of the present work. Fergusson covered in his study of Indian Architecture the vast range of time and space. Tracing the Indian Architecture from its remote antiquity, Fergusson covered the entire panorama of India with its diverse monuments including even the contemporary modes. In order to provide the reader with an all-encompassing view, he included in the present work, the Architecture of the neighbouring countries which were vastly influenced by the present-tradition of India. The books thus became, and still is, an authentic compendium on Architecture. The excellent woodcuts and photographs are still utilized for primary reference work. Printed Pages: 1004 with 68 b/w illustrations and numerous line drawings. 022756
