13001 James MacGregor Burns
Leaders Who Changed the World
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0670057630; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
In 1978, Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning political scientist James MacGregor Burns published Leadership, his seminal study on how leaders shape the course of history by transforming followers into creative new leaders. In Leaders Who Changed the World, Burns expands the subject to offer a new vision, showing how great leaders emerge from being ordinary ‘transactional’ deal-makers to become agents of major social change who empower their followers. He discusses key breakthroughs in leadership and profiles the towering leaders who attempted to transform their worlds—Elizabeth I, Napoleon, Washington, Gandhi, Lenin and Gorbachev, among others. The Writings of James Manor: Politics and State-Society Relations in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062505; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The Writings of James Manor: Politics and State-Society Relations in India is a definitive collection of essays which depicts Manor’s range of interests. They are divided into five sections. The first is a commentary on the emergence of a consolidated democracy in India, and discusses two major themes—political awakening and political decay—which, together with political regeneration, forms the three key processes at work in Indian politics over the past forty years.If one aspect of the management of democratic affairs is linked to the Indian voters and their shifting political choices, the other is where political leaders step in; and Manor is equally interested in both. He devotes three sections to the nature of political parties, the trends of regional politics, and how, at all these levels, political actors manage the challenges of governance. He addresses the regional dynamics of politics through the lens of political leadership in the fourth section. In the last section, he comments on the more recent phase of Indian politics.The Foreword by Niraja Gopal Jayal is a fitting tribute from a colleague. A celebration of the singular scholarship of one of the leading chroniclers of Indian politics, this will be invaluable for students, teachers and everyone interested in the politics of India. The Art of Chess
Goodwill Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 8172454643; Softcover; New;
This is a completely unabridged revised edition of the most famous general study of chess ever written. It is designed to teach the beginner and the intermediate player just about everything he or she needs to know about openings, middle game, and end game. It is remarkable in presenting both ideas and actual moves (taken from the masterplay) in the most easily assimilated form.Revised and brought up to date by Fred Reinfeld and Sidney Bernstein, this book explains and makes easy for you more than 90 different openings, ranging from the classical Ruy Lopez to the work of Alekhine, Reti, Nimzovich and others. Combinations are analyzed and presented so clearly that you will soon find yourself seeing moves ahead more clearly than you did before. You will learn how to plan your game with a purpose, how to attack, sacrifice, defend, exchange, and govern your general strategy. Endings are also thoroughly covered. Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121501172; Reprint; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This book deals with the unwritten rules of Nepalese religious art as laid down in 'model books'; manuals for the artists, in which they can find the correct way to represent, in visual art, any of some 2000 godly figures. The author has traced the development in time of some 150 popular Hindu deities in order to see if the representation of these gods is in any way related to changes in society. The author has studied the sketches in numerous model books and compared them with written iconographic descriptions in ancient texts as well as with executed art such as paintings, woodcarvings and miniatures. The main area of her study was the town of Bhaktapur. Printed Pages: 201. 000355

The Sankhya Aphorisms of Kapila with extracts from Vijnanabhiksu's Commentary
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121509831; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Traditionally and historically it is affirmed that Kapila is the real founder of the philosophical school known as Sankhya, or Enumeration. The school is so termed on account of it having given rise to twenty-four categories of existence or what may be called evolutes. Prior to Kapila, Indian philosophical scene was in a state of diffusion, in that the Sankhya elements of thought were scattered in various Upanisadic texts, which meant no systematic presentation existed insofar as philosophical reflection was concerned. The task of giving a systematic shape to philosophical reflection fell upon Kapila, which he accomplished with dexterity in his aphorisms. Kapila accomplished this task by synthesizing the scattered elements of philosophical reflection as well as by giving birth to technical terms that would give appropriate expression to the problems of ontology and epistemology. In this way Kapila laid the proper foundation for the future development of Indian philosophy, which with the passage of time, found its proper expression in such diverse schools of thought as Vedanta and Tantrism. The present translation of Aphorisms of Kapila by J.R. Ballantyne is so rendered as to make it possible for an average reader to understand the complex thought structure of Sankhya philosophy in a language that is easy and graspable. It will be of great help to those who are desirous of knowing not only the historical background of Indian thought, but also want to know as to how existential questions of life and death have been tackled. Man of Everest: The Autobiography of Tenzing
Pilgrims Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8177691910; Reprint; Paperback; New; New; 5.5 x 8.5 Inches
Man of Everest is the story of a man who had been inspired by, and finally devoted his life to the mountains of the Great Himalaya. Spoken as a true son of the soil Tenzing through the capable pen of James Ramsey Ullman, tells us in his own word of his devotion to and fascination with the greatest of all the Himalayan Peaks Cholomungma commonly known to us as Mount Everest and of how in the end with his colleagues of the famed Hunt expedition, he finally was one of the first to set foot on is summit. Though this event was not free of the controversies that often accompany such achievements, Tenzing whilst recounting his memories of the actual surmounting of the summit has dealt with subject very candidly as may be clearly seen in the text, and for the first time a description of the actual happenings in tenzing's won words were made available to the world. Ullman's introduction to Tenzing and his commissioning to write this autobiography were all through the good offices of the United Press Agency. Tenzing had shown his reluctance to work with a British writer and showed his preference for working with an American writer instead. The great humility of the man was shown in his appreciation of the fact that fortune had allowed him to be one of the main participants in achieving this great fead. In his own words he says, "For I like to think that our victory was only for ourselves not only for our nations but for all men everywhere. What I felt was a great closeness to God and that was enough for me." "Tenzing, a simple man from the mountains, who overnight became an international hero. tenzing always a gentleman never allowed the fame to change this basis simple ways, I was privileged to be his friend." Risk: The New Management Imperative in Finance
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8179922162; Softcover; New;
Advances in technology and risk modeling have boosted derivative markets. The resulting increase in arbitrage activities has narrowed profit margins in all financial markets. Consistent risk methodology is now an essential tool for overcoming competitive pricing and for anticipating the consequences of market turbulence.It is now possible to calculate the potential impact of every major deal on the overall risk profit of the firm. Market risk and credit risk can be quantified and considered against the expected contribution to share-holder value or return on capital. These measurements create a theoretical framework for harmonizing activity at financial firms.In practice, today’s markets and technologies evolve so rapidly that the requirements and the capabilities shift before any reengineering cycle can be completed. A quagmire of data seriously confounds the task of extracting reliable information for risk management. The data problem becomes acute when you move to global risk management, because a flaw anywhere affects the whole process and is much harder to trace.Printed Pages: 296. 105567

Book I of the series is intended for primary schools in which many of the fundamental concepts of mathematics are introduced. It has been written from the classroom experience of teaching Vedic mathematics to eight and nine years-old. Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121507677; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
James Tod is known for his classic work Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan. The present work, Travels in Western India contains the narrative of his journey and the places Tod visited on the way to his return to England. Starting his journey from Udaipur in Rajasthan to Mandavi in Kutch, he traversed Surashtra and Kutch from where Chandravati, Anhilvad Patan, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Khambhat, Bhavnagar, Valabhi, Palitana, Somnath, Junagarh, Dvaraka, Bhuj and several other places. This account is replete with facts and first-hand information about the places he visited. Particularly fascinating is his account of the Jaina temples at Dilwara, Palitana and the Girnar hills and the ancient remains at Chandravati, Anhilvad Patan, Ahmedabad, Junagarh, Bhuj and other towns. Equally important are the traditions, sects and beliefs, palias or hero-stones which Tod could understand and explain with felicity on account of his first hand experience in Rajasthan. Included in this account of travels is an appendix containing translations of inscriptions referred to by Tod in the book. This account also contains fine wood-cut illustrations of monuments, plans of some of the places as well as drawings of sundry items observed by Tod. This book, which was published posthumously, has also a fairly detailed memoir on its author Lieutenant-Colonel James Tod, which brings out the personality of this memorable person. James Tod's Travels in Western India is an extremely valuable work for the scholars as well as lay reader interested in knowing about peoples and places. Printed Pages: 578. 032781

Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan: Or the central and western Rajpoot States of India with a preface by Douglas Sladen, 2 Vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8121510228; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, after its publication brought to entire world not only the resounding echoes of drums and cavalcades from the remote highlands of Rajasthan, awakening people to a blazing trial of imagination about the traditions of courage, chivalry, romance and sacrifice but also its geographical background, economic resources, social system, political organization and religion. This book has been considered by scholars as an indispensable storehouse of material dealing with various facets which usually find no place in any historical account and has thus rightly been called 'an encyclopaedia ob the land including some parts of central and western India in general and Rajasthan and the Tajputs in particular. The collection of material as a vital precondition to the writing of history was never lost sight of by Tod. During his connection with Rajputana he showed an untiring zeal in the search for the historical data which is very well reflected in this book. Despite it's shortcomings, as this being the first historical work of its kind the book serves as one of the original contributions on Rajasthan which had laid the foundation of the systematic study of the history of the land. Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174365796; Hardcover; New; New;
A landmark historical work, written at the cusp of modernity in the early nineteenth century, Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan was Lieutenant Colonel James Tod's classic tribute to this grand desert region of India. Tod - mesmerized by this region and its inhabitants, the Rajpoots - dedicated himself to examining everything about Rajasthan through indigenous documentation, architectural relics, inscriptions, and medieval poetry. For twenty years, Tod delved deep into its long history, its legends and folklore, its social customs and its art. He also conducted geographical research and made the first accurate map of Rajasthan in 1815. This pioneering book condenses the two thick volumes of Tod's Annals and presents them in an accessible and comprehensive manner. While Tod's original style has been preserved, some gaps and inaccuracies have been clarified by the author. A treasury of invaluable material for historians and general readers alike, the Annals cover the history of six important regions of Rajasthan - Mewar, Marwar, Jessulmer, Bikaner, Amber, and Haravati - and give an engaging account of Rajpoot life from the twelfth century onwards. Many of the surviving traditions of Rajpoots that have their roots in bloody battles, tribal conquests, or petty rivalries, and the Rajpoots'inherent chivalry, loyalty, devotion and zeal have been perceptively discussed. This abridgement also illuminates how the history of the subcontinent was successively written and perceived by the British. Printed Pages: 384. 108513

Police Victim and Victim Justice
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8174790438; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Wounded Justice - is a reality in administration of criminal justice by police. Victims of crime, victims of abuse of power/misuse of authority, victims of circumstances and so on are of no concern for police in the prevailing rule of law and criminal justice administration. As there is always a victim at the other end of every police action, victim justice administration assumes greater importance in the year to come. Wounded justice must be healed and the subject matter of this book is all about police, victim and victim justice. Victims of crime and the victims of police action are as important as the crime-doers and the police functionaries who deal with them. Respect for human person and his dignity becomes a matter of paramount importance in police-victim interaction and that is what author speaks about in this book. He speaks for and against the police and their victims. The treatment of the subject thus makes the book unique in victimology and victim justice administration. In this book, The Author introduces a totally new concept of the Crime committed by enforcement officers during the course of Law enforcement or in the pretext of law enforcement. The book specifically identifies the enforcement crimes and pleads for compensation to victims of misuse/abuse of power and authority. It mainly deals with the enforcement crimes generally noticed in the Police department.Enforcement crime is a new concept introduced by the author and it means the crimes committed by enforcement officers during the course of law enforcement or on the pretext of law enforcement or on the prefect of law enforcement. Till now/nobody viewed such violations of law as crime/although some named the acts as lawless law enforcement. They have to work in a Legal Framework which recognizes victim justice, Gender justice, human rights justice, social justice, enforcement justice, just justice, total Justice etc. under an equal justice system which stands for distributive justice to criminals, to the victims, to the victims of power and authority, to the Society and to the justice system itself. Police Morality
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8178350386; Hardcover; New; New;
Morally insane and Legally sane-this is a eliche in Police subculture. Don't worry about the morality of your act, but be cautious about the legality of your action-this is the advice given to younger generations by the elders in police. They consider morality as something not applicable to police work or as something which does not have anything to do with police job. The author thinks that any Law without a morality is a jungle law and the policemen cannot enforce jungle law n a democracy. Human conscience is a mental energy which generates restlessness, discomfort, compulsive behaviour in people when they commit moral wrongs and if that is so, it cannot be otherwise in people who wear police uniform. All people have negativity in abundance and immorality is a negativity. The negativity in police has resulted in custodial violence, torture, death, suicide, rape, coercion and what not in police subculture/ The author says that the police do not require any encouragement to become immoral, but they need enlightenment to become moral in police works. Police Ethics I s a new area and precisely therefore, the book would attract not only policemen but also moralists, judges, lawyers, researchers and public administrators.Printed Pages: 262. 106024

A New Course in Reading Pali: Entering the Word of the Buddha
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120814401; Fifth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is intended and serve as an introduction to the reading of Pali texts. For that purpose, it uses authentic readings especially compiled for the purpose drawn largely from Theravada canonical works, both prose and poetry. The reading are in Roman script, and carefully graded for difficulty, but they have also been selected so that each of them is a meaningful and complete reading in itself, so as to introduce some basic concepts and ways of thought of Theravada Buddhism. This book thus offers and opportunity to become acquainted with the ways in which the teachings of the Buddha are embodied in the language, a sense that it impossible to determine from English translations. The book contains 12 lessons. Each of them has three parts: (1) a set of basic readings and an accompanying glossary, (2) grammatical notes on the forms in the less, and (3) a set of further readings with its own glossary. The further readings introduce no new grammatical points, but reinforce ones already presented and give further practice in them. The work concludes, fittingly, with the Buddha’s first sermon, The Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta. A cumulative glossary and index to the grammar is also provided.Printed Pages: 229. 102561

Blood That Cries Out from the Earth: The Psychology of Religious Terrorism
Oxford University Press; New York ,USA; 2008; 019533597X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Religious terrorism has become the scourge of the modern world. What causes a person to kill innocent strangers in the name of religion? As both a clinical psychologist and an authority on comparative religion, James W. Jones is uniquely qualified to address this increasingly urgent question. Research on the psychology of violence shows that several factors work to make ordinary people turn "evil." These include feelings of humiliation or shame, a tendency to see the world in black and white, and demonization or dehumanization of other people. Authoritarian religion or "fundamentalism," Jones shows, is a particularly rich source of such ideas and feelings, which he finds throughout the writings of Islamic jihadists, such as the 9/11 conspirators. Jones goes on to apply this model to two very different religious groups that have engaged in violence: Aum Shinrikyo, the Buddhist splinter group behind the sarin gas attacks in the Tokyo subway system, and members of the extreme religious right in the U.S. who have advocated and committed violence against abortion providers. Jones notes that not every adherent of an authoritarian group will turn to violence, and he shows how theories of personality development can explain why certain individuals are easily recruited to perform terrorist acts. Timeless Rapture: Inspired Verse of the Shangpa Masters
Snow Lion Publications; Ithaca, New York, USA; 1559392045; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 6 x 9 Inches
Throughout history awakened ones have celebrated the rapture of mystical states with inspired verse, sung extemporaneously. This book offers a rare glimpse into the mysticism of the Shangpa Kagyu lineage, a tradition based mainly on the profound teaching of 2 women. This compendium of spontaneous verse sung by tantric Buddhist masters from the 10th century to the present includes translations as well as short descriptions of each poet's life and a historical overview of the lineage. "Our lineage's past spiritual masters used songs to express their manifest experience and realization of the spiritual path's vital subjects, such as the trio of basis, path, and result; or view, meditation, and conduct; as well as dispelling hindrances and enriching meditative experience. The blessings of the lineage enter our heart, the very best technique to realize our mind's abiding nature, Great Seal. I pray that all who see, hear, or read this book be blessed."-- Bokar Rinpoche "Only a fraction of Tibet's vast literature of mystical poetry has yet been translated into other languages. Now, with the gift of Ngawang Zangpo's inspired English translations, the exquisite expressions of inner experience sung by the greatest men and women of the Shangpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism are available to the world."-- Cyrus Stearns, author of The Buddha from Dolpo, Hermit of Go Gliffs, and Luminous Lives "Ngawang Zangpo's fluid translation and rich commentary truly brings us into the presence of the extra-ordinary masters of the Shangpa Kagyu tradition. As we listen to their verse, we are transported by their devotion, awakened wisdom, and blessing to the Vajra world that has become their home."-- Lama Drupgyu Tenzin "Ngawang Zangpo has given us, for the first time in English, the complete translation of the Songs of Realization of the Shangpa masters. This is a living, unbroken lineage, of fully realized mahasiddhas, both female and male, whose teachings burst forth in spontaneous song. Through the centuries these pith instructions have inspired and brought to full realization generations of yogis and yoginis. I highly recommend Timeless Rapture for its illuminating and joyful transmission."-- Lama Palden Drolma, Sukhasiddhi Foundation Printed Pages: 416. 001689

Firuz Shah Tughluq was one of the most outstanding rulers of India and his life and work has got a great significance and value for the history of Northern India. The author has very carefully utilized the original sources in this study and in seven chapter he has discussed the various events of Firuz's reign and throw light on several obscure points like his succession etc. He ahs refused Sir Wolseley Haig's theory of usurpation and tried to establish his view by cogent arguments. The Poverty Regime in Village India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195690834; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This book is a companion volume to the recently published Labour Bondage in West India. Both the volumes are an outcome of the author’s return to the villages of his earlier fieldwork in south Gujarat between 2004 and 2006. His aim was to ascertain whether economic growth during the last half century had indeed helped to improve the lot of the rural proletariat. As before, the poverty-stricken landless labourers are the subject of this study. Challenging the economists’ views on the meaning, magnitude, and dynamics of poverty, Breman presents a case for analysing deprivation within a wider social context. His findings show that the landless may not have become poorer than they were half a century ago but the gap separating them from the better-off in the village economy has widened enormously. The market economy has not created more economic, political, and social space for them. Footloose, underemployed, and working for paltry wages, this class is stuck far below the poverty line. The author disputes the view that his findings are specific for the region under investigation. The data compiled and the variation within it—nature of the agricultural economy, proximity to urban centres, access to industrial employment, and caste and class identity of the employers—clearly establishes that work and life in the rural slums has to be understood in the wider setting of marginalization leading to exclusion. 020782

Ideology and Status of Sanskrit: Contributions to the History of the Sanskrit Language
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120835018; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present volume is the outcome of a seminar on the Ideology and Status of Sanskrit held in Leiden under the auspices of the International Institute for Asian Studies. The book contains studies of crucial periods and important areas in the history of the Sanskrit language, from the earliest, Vedic and pre-Vedic periods, through the period in which the (restricted) use of Sanskrit spread over practically all of South (including part of Central) and Southeast Asia (sometimes referred to as the period of 'Greater India') up to the recent history of Sanskrit in India. The contributions of this volume are divided into three sections: 1. Origins and creation of the 'Eternal Language'; 2. Transculturation, Vernacularization,; Sanskritization,; 3. The Sanskrit Tradition: Continuity from the Past or Construction from the Present? Printed Pages: 530. 102555

Violence Denied: Violence, Non-Violence and the Rationalization of Violence in South Asian Cultural History
Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 1999; 9004113444; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 16.5 x 25 Cm
In the course of millennia of dealing with problems of violence, South Asia has not only elaborated the ideal of total avoidance of violence in a unique manner, it also developed arguments justifying and rationalizing its employment under certain circumstances. Some of these arguments seemingly transform all sorts of ‘violence’ into ‘non-violence’. Historical and cultural aspects of the tensions between violence and its denial and rationalization in South Asia are taken up in the contributions of this volume which deal with topics ranging from the origins of the concept of ahim?sa-, to the iconography and interpretation of a self-beheading goddess, and violent heroines in Ajñeya’s Hindi short stories. 025740
