Secularizing Islamists?: Jama‘at-e-Islami and Jama‘at-ud-da‘wa in Urban Pakistan
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8178243326; Hardcover; New; New;
Secularizing Islamists? provides a thorough analysis of two Islamist parties in Pakistan, the highly influential Jama‘at-e-Islami and the more militant Jama‘at-ud-Da‘wa, widely blamed for the November 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai. Basing her findings on ethnographic work with the two parties in Lahore, Humeira Iqtidar says that these Islamists are involuntarily facilitating secularization within Muslim societies, even as they vehemently oppose secularism. This book offers a fine-grained account of the workings of both parties. It challenges received ideas about the relationship between the ideology of secularism and the processes of secularization.Printed Pages: 234. 101992

Dagars & Dhrupad
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383098750; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 248 x 220 Mm
Dhrupad is one of the earliest and most dominant streams that has contributed to Hindustani classical music. According to Faiyazuddin Dagar (1934-1989), 'In the two parts of the dhrupad, the alap [the improvised section of a raga, forming a prologue to the formal expression] is sung in free rhythm over drone, and the pada [word or phrase that signifies the concept of a raga] is more a rhythmic poem accompanied by drumming over the two-headed pakhawaj [the standard percussion instrument used in dhrupad]. It is a devotional and spiritual type of music … and though the basic style has not changed right from the earlier times-15 centuries ago-individuality does come in and find its place.' Dagars & Dhrupad: Divine Legacy gives glimpses of the rich heritage of this haunting form of music that has enthralled audiences worldwide. It traces the history of the illustrious Dagar family through 20 generations of dhrupad singers and highlights their distinctive approach to this unique form of music. Rare photographs make the book all the more special Printed Pages: 156. 039137

Kashmir: The Untold Story
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143030876; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Since 1989, Kashmir has rarely been out of the headlines, as local militants, foreign terrorists and Indian security forces battle it out in a region once known as `paradise on earth'. In all the propaganda, and news and statistics about terrorist strikes, counter insurgency operations and the foreign hand, the human stories, however, are often lost. In this book, journalist Humra Quraishi draws upon her extensive travels in the Valley and interactions with ordinary Kashmiris over two decades to try and understand what the long strife has done to them. She brings us heartrending stories of mothers waiting for their young sons who disappeared years ago, picked up by the army or by militants; minds undone by the constant uncertainty and fear and almost daily humiliation; old harmonies tragically undermined by the atmosphere of suspicion; an entire generation of young Kashmiris who have grown up with no concept of security; and individual families and a whole society falling apart under the strain of the seemingly endless turmoil. Afghan Endgames: Strategy and Policy Choices for America's Longest War
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382993025; Hardcover; New; New;
The United States and its allies have been fighting the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan for a decade in a war that either side could still win. While a gradual drawdown has begun significant numbers of US combat troops will remain in Afghanistan until at least 2014 perhaps longer depending on the situation on the ground. Given the realities of the Taliban’s persistence and the desire of US policymakers—and the public—to find a way out what can and should be the goals of the US and its allies in Afghanistan? Afghan Endgames boldly pursues several strands of thought suggesting that a strong legitimate central government is far from likely to emerge in Kabul; that fewer coalition forces used in creative ways may have better effects on the ground than a larger more conventional presence; and that even though Pakistan should not be pushed too hard so as to avoid sparking social chaos there Afghanistan’s other neighbors can and should be encouraged to become more actively involved. The volume’s editors conclude that while there may never be complete peace in Afghanistan a self-sustaining security system able to restore order swiftly in the wake of violence is attainable.Printed Pages: 248. 101457

A Record of the Buddhist Religion as Practised in India and Malay Archipelago AD 671-894: trans. By J. Takakusu
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121501687; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Travelling for trade is common, for pleasure is not unusual, but for pursuit of religious lore is rather rare. This has been so in all ages. The Chinese traveler of the seventh century AD, I-tsing belongs to the last class. I-tsing had mastered the Vinaya Pitakas of Buddhism before he set out on his travels which lasted for twenty-five years and which covered more than thirty countries. His objective was to secure the authentic texts of the Mulasarvastivada school from India so that the erroneous view of the Chinese scholars of Vinaya Pitakas could be corrected. The hazardous voyage from China to India in a Persian trading vessel did not dampen his zeal. He collected some 400 Sanskrit texts in India. He reached China in AD 695 and spent the rest of his life in translating them. The distinguishing trait of I-tsing's work, A Record of the Buddhist Religion as Practised in India and the Malay Archipelago, is his reticence to talk about himself and his enthusiasm in compressing a vast array of data on Buddhism into an interesting and handy narrative. It provides a veritable mine of information on Indian literature and Buddhism. Printed Pages: 294 with 1 map. 027599

The Everest Hotel: A Calendar
IndiaInk/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8186939016; Hardcover; New; New;
In the small town of Drummondganj, under the shadow of the Himalayas, stands the Everest, once an exclusive hotel now a home for the unwanted run by a small community of nuns. The owner, Jed, sometime mountaineer and flower-hunter, ninety but still smouldering, lives on the roof from where he looks out across the cemetery at his beloved snows. Obsessed with writing the Drummondganj Book of the Dead, he sees no visitors except his neighbour and disciple, the footloose bodybuilder Brij. The arrival of Ritu, a young botanizing nun assigned to look after Jed, skews matters both on the roof and in the garden where Thapa, a retired Gurkha soldier, is mali and chowkidar. But it is the entry of another newcomer, Inge, a German neo-Nazi in search of her uncle's grave that strains the equilibrium of life at the Everest. One night, the balance tips when Thaps's razor-sharp kukri disappears from its nail on the wall. Set against a backdrop of social and political unease and measured by the rhythmical changes of the seasons, The Everest Hotel is a rich, evocative and compelling read. In prose at once lyrical and wry, Allan Sealy has created a haunting array of characters whose lives and milieu will fascinate and enchant. Printed Pages: 333. 108492

Evolution of Hindu Culture in Bali: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time
Sundeep Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 1991; 8185067651; Hardcover; New; New;
The History of Hindu Culture in Bali dates back to the last few centuries beofre the Christian era. In the first chapter, indegenous Balinese culture and its people have been discussed. The Pre-Hindu People of Bali were of strong spiritual nature and this provided the base for future evolution of Hindu culture. In the second chapter an attempt has been made to trace back the influence of the Hindu culture. Before the eighth century one finds Bali under the firect influence of the Southern part of India. There is a close similarity in costum the use of traditional dress etc. between Bali and south India. The next chapter tries to delineate the political history of Bali. When Srivijaya and Sanjaya dynasties were arising in the seventh century, Bali too, was emerging as a powerful state. By the end of the eighth century Bali was captured by the Hindu Mataram king, central Java. But in the ninth century again she started to assert herself. During the period arose the Varmadeva dynasty which ruled till the end of fourteenth century when Bali was once again conquered by the Majapahit ruler. But with the decline of Majapahit empire, bali declared her independence wich ended with the arrival of the Dutch. In the fourth chapter, the discussion centres around Balinese Hindusim. One finds the caste system prevalent there put it is much more liberal. In Balinese Hinduism, Bali is supposed to be the centre of the universe. Lord Sadasiva sits on a golden lotus wich has eighht petals pointing in eight directions. The next chapter narrates about the classical Balinese language. The whole body of Kavi literature is essentially religious in character. The earliest Kavi work available is Ramayana-Kakvin, Mahabharata, and Purana are some of other Kavi works composed during this period. In the sixth chapter Balinese art and architecture have been discussed. The most prominent feature of Indo-Balinese architecture is to be found in the large tanks in the front of the temples. Another characteristic trait has been the use of Kiritmukha. The different types of shrine architecture - Meru, and Padmasana are to be seen here. The Padmasana shrine architecture derived from the concept of Lingayoni was adopted from Majapahit. One does not see much progress in the field of cave architecture in Bali. Alkali Wastelands Environment and Reclamation
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8175331003; Hardcover; New; New;
In the next two decades, population of India is likely to cross 1.4 billion mark. With additional burden on food grains consumption from demographic shift from rural to urban centers and change in food habits, India need to produce about 325 million tons of food grains by 2027. Since the competing demands from other sectors of economy for the inelastic land resource are multiplying fast, the best agricultural lands are being encroached upon by these sectors. Thus, any further increase in food grains has to come from either vertical increase in productivity or through reclamation of so called wastelands. Out of 8.5 million ha of salt affected lands, alkali lands assessed at 3.8 million ha could be easily managed and reclaimed resulting in an additional food grains production of about 30 million tons. Although researches on land reclamation began even before independence yet the real fillip in understanding the alkali wastelands environment and development of reclamation and management packages came after the establishment of CSSRI, Karnal in the year 1969. In association with this institute, many State Agricultural Universities reoriented their research and came out with theories of alkali land reclamation and developed reclamation and management packages. Favorable policy support from central and state governments helped to reclaim more than 1.3 million ha of alkali lands. To tide over the current and emerging challenges such as to take care of resource poor regions and farmers, environmental degradation and location specific nature of the problems, these packages are being upgraded and new packages are being developed. These new technologies are emerging fast and it is alomst impossible to keep track of these developments through published research papers. This book encompasses the latest information on this subject for most states where problems of alkali lands exist. It has been our endeavor to include all aspects of reclamation and management so that there are at least few alternatives to choose from. Therefore, we believe that the compiled information will be handy to post- graduate students, teachers, researchers, extension personals and the staff in conventional departments such as agriculture and irrigation. Moreover, planners entrusted with the task of development of wastelands in India would be immensely benefited from the information included in this book. Printed Pages: 411. 117515

A History of Economic Thought
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789350024737; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This is an important and unparalleled work which situated Marx's economic theory in relation to the economic theories that pre-date him - from mercantilism to John Stuart Mill. First published in 1929, the book dates from the fertile period of Marxist economic theory that produced the works of Preobrazhensky, Kondratiev and Bukharin. However as a review of pre-Marxist economics it stands out from the many books which dwell only on the contemporary industrialisation debates. This is a selective reading of economic thought, offering analysis of those elements in past economics that accord with the areas of interest to Marxism. Each section gives a brief analysis of a specific school of thought, with particular attention to the social and ideological climate within which it evolved. The book differs from orthodox accounts in not merely mentioning historical background but using it as a central explanation of the evolution of economic theories. As a counterpoint to Rubin, Catherine Colliot-Thelene has written a daring essay which located a crucial flaw in the logical structure of Marx's Capital. I.I. Rubi, born in 1886, became an active participant in the Russian revolutionary movement. After the Bolshevik seizure of power he worked as professor of Marxist economics, and in 1926 became a research associate at the Marx-Engels Institute. In 1930, Rubin was imprisoned, accused of belonging to an organization that never existed, forced to "confess" events that never took place, and finally removed from among the living. His other books include Essays on Marx's Theory of Value, Contemporary Economists in the West and an anthology, Classics of Political Economy from the Seventeenth to the Mid-Nineteenth Century. Islam in Modern Asia
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8175330945; Hardcover; New; New;
Islam is a monotheistic faith, one of the Abrahamic religions, and the world second-largest religion. Followers of Islam are known as Muslims. Muslims believe that God revealed his divine word directly to mankind through many prophets and that Muhammad was the final prophet of Islam. Muslims hold that Muslims hold that Islam is essentially the same belief as that of all the messengers sent by God to mankind since Adam, with the Quran (the text used by all sects of the Muslim faith) codifying the final revelation of God. Islamic texts depict Judaism and Christianity as derivations of the teachings of the prophet Abraham and thus acknowledge common Abrahamic roots. The Quran calls Jews and Christians (and sometimes people of other faiths) People of the Book Historically, the second Caliph Umar ibn Khattab created what came to be known as Pact of Umar in establishing that any people of the book who submitted to Muslim authority as dhimmis during the wars of Muslim expansion retained their freedom of religion and their existing churches. The actions and political rhetoric of the day seem to affirm the commitment of many Muslims to a more Islamic political, social , and economic order. Ths wide-ranging unpublished writtings by leading authorities on Islamic affairs to provide the fullest picture of the diverse roles played by Islam in Asian public life today. Central topics include how Islam is presented in the public life-government, national ideology , law and political parties of Muslim countries today. Printed Pages: 413. 117584

Buddhist Monuments of China and South-East India
Sundeep Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 1985; 817574023X; Hardcover; New; New;
The book is an outcome of the author`s study tour covering the monuments, ancient sites and museums in the People`s Republic of China, under the Indo-China cultural Exchange Programme (1983 84). It vividly describes the archaeological relics and historical monuments of China in the provinces of Shanxi, Henan and Gansu, besides Beijing and its surroundings. Though emphasis is laid on the Buddhist monuments and relics, an authentic account of the pro and protohistoric relics and culture sequences documented in recent years through the archaeological field work within the People`s Republic of China, is also given. For the first time, one gets a glimpse of the great Buddhist rock-cut caves of Northern and Central China through excellent photo-illustrations. Besides, an analytical correlative study of the Buddhist contacts between South-East India, China and Ceylon is attempted for the first time, bringing to light the potential overseas "Perfume Route" which supplemented the older and well known overland "Silk Road" The book is of lasting value for the students, as well as scholars, interested in the study of the archaeological wealth of China and aims at the growth of culture-contacts between the two most Ancient Civilizations of the East. Innovations in Design: Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transit System
Mapin Publishing; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8189995936; Softcover; New;
Over the last decade in India, many cities have undertaken path-breaking initiatives in resolving issues associated with urban transport, and, specifically, mass transit system. The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is now acknowledged as a key mode to help large-scale mobility of people. Today, eighteen cities in the country are at different stages of planning, design, execution and operation in their BRTS journey. Since the BRTS concept was new to India a decade ago, cities experimented in various ways with varying degrees of success.The Janmarg, as the BRTS is known in Ahmedabad, also explored many options before choosing its design approach. It was flexible in changing design elements even during the implementation stage. Every element was discussed, debated, and experimented with before a final decision. Many of these experiments led to innovations and best practices. Since its inauguration in October 2009, Janmarg has been accepted as the first ‘complete’ BRTS in India.This book traces the design journey of Janmarg, the alternatives that were considered, the rationale underlying the choices made, the innovations it fostered and lessons for the future—for Ahmedabad and for other cities. The volume will be valuable resource for researches as well as students.The Urban Transport India Series are shared knowledge resources about innovative practices in urban transport planning in India. How Neighbours Converge: The Politics and Economics of Regionalism
Konark Publication/D.K. Publishers Distributors; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789322008383; New;
Though there are exceptions, neighbours are increasingly inclined to converge naturally in todays world. It was not always so. From Kautilya onwards, sagacious thinkers have told us it is natural for neighbours to be enemies. In the twenty first century, however, as economic competition replaces military and strategic rivalry in the relations between nations, it has become the norm for them to look across their borders with economic cooperation in mind: trade, investment, the exchange of services, other complementarities and common interests that will serve to make them more competitive.There are other factors too. Geographical propinquity, the unities of history, cultural commonality, language spilling across borders, all make the neighbourhood a comfort zone for working together. It also then becomes a zone of peace.Regionalism has thus become both important and interesting. It has spread rapidly and widely, encompassing, in a few decades, the entire world in regional cooperation organizations of myriad forms.At the deepest level, cooperation and peace are symbiotically bonded within the human genome, a bond which has effect on and continues into social life, economics, politics and sociology, culture and tradition, among a large number of factors that govern human behaviour. This starts with individuals and goes on to groups and generalizing further, to the different kinds of community that humans have formed throughout history. One important part of that history deals with the fact that groups of all kinds find it beneficial, profitable, and empowering to work together and to set themselves large aims. But all of this can as well be the foundations for cooperation as for rivalry. And there has been so much concentration on the other part of history, the one that deals with conflict and military rivalry, that the part that deals with cooperation and peace has been relatively neglected. Nowadays the picture is more balanced; there is growing attention to the forces that make for peace and cooperation, a growing literature that attempts to understand the circumstances in which a complex of states within any region will employ these forces to rule out war and even the possibility of war in their mutual relations.Regionalism is juxtaposed with globalism, sometimes in opposition to it, sometimes working jointly, and there are a large number of theories that have been put forward to understand both these phenomena. However it is now more and more apparent that regionalism is the major driving force of today. That, too, makes it increasingly important, as well as interesting, to understand its different aspects.This book explains regionalism with an emphasis on the various economic theories and models as well as other theories that have been propounded over the years since 1945. It has detailed case studies of three important regional cooperation ventures: SAARC; ASEAN and the European Union, in the hope that these will flesh out many of the theories. India and The New Europe
Konark Publication/D.K. Publishers Distributors; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8122006892; New;
There has been a pervasive and apparently justified feeling that the Government of India, India's corporate sector, the media and even academia, pay far less attention to the Gulf than its importance demands. More of our exports go to the Gulf than to the region that has received so much economic importance in recent years, Southeast Asia. As for imports there can be no comparison: not only does oil from the Gulf dwarf every other import from every other source in value, but the sustenance of India s high growth rates is dependent on it. This dependence will increase; talk of diversification of sources notwithstanding. As for the other economic parameter, investment the foreign exchange reserves of Southeast Asia are small compared to those potential too. As oil prices continue to soar, the coffers of the Gulf oil producers only get larger. Then there is man power export; four and a half million Indians work in the Gulf. They send almost ten billion dollars a year in remittances back to India. Strategically and politically, too, the Gulf is important for India. But India has handled relations with the Gulf as it would to a distant and somewhat forgettable region. This may now be changing. Certainly, the series of crucial developments there the revolution in Iran, the Iraq-Iran war, the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, then 9/11 and the US military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq have put the Gulf and its surrounding high on the international agenda. India has shown that it is prepared to develop relation with the countries of the region in recognition of their high importance. High level visits from Iran, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates during the last three years suggests that this is so. But far more needs to be done. The question that needs to be examined in depth and detail is that in the light of our ancient cultural, trade and other contacts how exactly would India s interests figure in all these contemporary developments and what should she do to promote those interests. In this volume, leading experts, analysts and academics examine different aspects of this question with a view to finding answers. Printed Pages: 284. 117811

Energy is the pivot on which economic growth turns. Presently we do not have enough reserves of gas for the enormous demands that economic growth is likely to generate. It has to be imported. This can be imported from our immediate neighbours to the West and East; with the Gulf and with Central Asian countries, with Southeast Asian sources like Myanmar etc. Some understandings have been reached, others are being negotiated. This volume is an attempt to describe and analyse the situation we face now, the difficulties we need to overcome, and how best to ensure the security of our energy supplies in the coming decades.... Tiger Jungle: The Epic Tale of Bandhavgarh
Tiger Books; United Kingdom; 0954311523; Hardcover; New; New; 26 x 29 Cm
The world of the tiger is in turmoil; latest research shows that the entire population in India may be lower than 2000 animals and decreasing. Hidden away in Central India, Bandhavgarh is one of the best surviving tiger habitats. Lavishly illustrated with more than 150 stunning photographs by wildlife photographer, Iain Green, "Tiger Jungle" tells the intricate story of the lives of this small population of wild tigers and their forest home.Central to the book is the life of a tiger, known as Sundar. Through ten years of study, he is followed from a year-old cub to dominant territorial male and father/grandfather of many young.As Sundar walks through the jungle, the habitat made famous by Kipling's "Jungle Book", his daily journey takes him over the remains of lost civilisations, and below the walls of a fort belonging to epic Indian folklore. His pugmarks imprint on the soft sandy soil, marked by generations of tigers over many years. The intertwined history of Bandhavgarh and tigers is a long one - from Maharajahs and white tigers, to temples and tourists.With a personal and passionate foreword by international artist and conservationist, David Shepherd, "Tiger Jungle" offers a unique insight into the daily lives of the tiger - one of the world's most admired and endangered animals.
