Kristu Bhakti and Krishna Bhakti: A Christian-Hindu Dialogue Contributing to Comparative Theology
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351481980; Hardcover; New; New;
What does the popular Sanskrit term bhakti mean? Is it a self-evident concept? With an acknowledgment of complexity and variety this book helps to grasp the essential meaning and various dimensions of a God-experience and its implication for a transformed and transforming life. Taking the famous figures Jesus and Krsna, as presented by two popular texts (St. John's Gospel and the Rasalila section), two distinctive bhakti frameworks are analysed and compared. Any bhakti experience does not happen in a vacuum and Jesus and Krsna were not only multifaceted figures but also they went through a long process of ascendency to divine supremacy. For those who want to understand bhakti this book might prove to be an engaging guide. Printed Pages: 220. 113675

Religion, Spirituality and Secularity in Multi-Religious India: Visions and Experiments
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351482130; Hardcover; New; New;
However complex and mysterious, religion in some form is integral to human life as evident in history and therefore cannot be divorced from study and analysis. The alternative term `spirituality' appeared to ward off the ambiguous characters of religion, but it has not proved to be less complex. Explicit religions claim to possess the resources of spirituality while often maintaining a dichotomy between spiritual and material. An alternative understanding of spirituality is presented as permeating all aspects of life. The concept of implicit religion and secular spirituality, unlike the established religion, is exploratory with open boundary. However, it cannot remain a concept in the intellectual realm but be applied to contexts like India where religious life is vibrant within a secular polity where struggle for legal and eco-justice continues.The essays of this book provide a commentary on these issues. Further, insights, instincts and impulses to work for change at great personal risks deserve an in-depth exploration. Printed Pages: 188. 113688

Tibet in 1938-1939: Photographs from the Ernst Schaefer Expedition to Tibet
Serindia Publications; Chicago, USA; 2007; 193247630X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 8.5 x 10 Inches
Laying dormant in the German Federal Archives in Koblenz are photographs from one of the most controversial expedition in recent history: the Ernst Schäfer expedition to Tibet in 1938-1939. Ernst Schäfer (1910-1992), a zoologist who had earlier participated as a young student in the Brooke Dolan expedition to Eastern Tibet in 1930-1932 and led the one in 1934-1936, started his first own expedition with young German scientists to Tibet in 1938. This volume presents a selection of 150 largely unpublished photographs from that expedition. Revealing lives in Tibet as it existed before World War II, the photographs are documents of bygone lifestyles, buildings, and temples, and the self-confident people of Tibet at the verge of historical change. The expedition’s photographs capture a vision of Tibet that is not romantic Shangri-la, but of the people and their activities and interactions. They include portraits of prominent figures and places that no longer exist. As such these photographs not only uncover the facts about the expedition itself, but also are rich sources of information casting new light to the recent history of Tibet. With illuminating essays by Isrun Engelhardt, Bianca Horlemann, Clare Harris, Claudius Müller, and original reports by the expedition’s Sikkimese interpreter Rapten Kazi, this volume provides insights into the expedition’s movitation, results, and the subjects it aimed to study. The essays bring historical circumstances to the photographs, putting them in the context that enhances our understanding of Tibet. Printed Pages: 296 with 150 b/w illustrations. 018780

The Demon’s Sermon on the Martial Arts and Other Tales
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2012; 1590309898; Softcover; New;
This collection of parables written by an eighteenth-century samurai is a classic of martial arts literature. The tales are concerned with themes such as perception of conflict, self-transformation, the cultivation of chi (life energy), and understanding yin and yang. Some of the parables seem light and fanciful, but they offer the reader valuable lessons on the fundamental principles of the martial arts; “The Mysterious Technique of the Cat” is iconic. The “demon” in the title story refers to the mythical tengu, who guard the secrets of swordsmanship. A swordsman travels to Mt. Kurama, famous for being inhabited by tengu, and in a series of conversations he learns about mushin (no-mind), strategy, the transformation of chi, and how the path of the sword leads to the understanding of life itself. The author, Issai Chozanshi, had a deep understanding of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto, as well as insight into the central role of chi in the universe—points that are succinctly explained in William Scott Wilson’s fine introduction and extensive endnotes. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to truly understand the philosophical underpinnings of martial arts, and how these principles relate to our existence. Printed Pages: 224. 110960

South Asian Cultures of the Bomb: Atomic Publics and the State in India and Pakistan
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125040560; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
India and Pakistan became independent nations early in the world’s atomic age. Nuclear power and nuclear weapons have been present from the beginning as key features of nationalism and the public sphere in each country. Yet the relationship between nuclear arms and civil society in South Asia is seldom taken into account in conventional security studies. What explains the fascination of Indian and Pakistani elites with nuclear weapons? What accounts for the absence of a mass antinuclear movement in either country? What do people outside New Delhi and Islamabad think of nuclear weapons? In these original and provocative essays, scholars from India, Pakistan, the U.S., U.K., and Europe argue that if we are to find answers to these important questions it is crucial to understand nuclear power in South Asia beyond the narrow confines of strategic studies. The contributors stress the political and ideological components of national drives to possess and test nuclear weapons, incorporating approaches from history, political theory, sociology, anthropology, media studies, art history and postcolonial studies. A distinctive feature of the volume is the attempt to provide equal coverage for comparable issues in both India and Pakistan, resulting in a genuine intellectual dialogue across this contested boundary. Brands Under Fire
Penguin Portfolio; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0670082260; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Big brands, big companies, big budgets—and yet, things can still go wrong. In fact, four of the country’s most powerful brands were involved in major brand disasters: Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Chocolates, Coca-Cola and Pepsi, and UTI’s Unit-64 were hit by major problems—worms in chocolates, pesticides in colas and a catastrophe in the country’s favorite mutual fund. In Brands under Fire, brand experts Ivan Arthur and Kurien Mathews use these case studies to cut through the common thinking on brand behaviour to submit fresh insights into the brands of the 21st century. In this book, the two authors, together with India’s most respected personalities from the fields of marketing, communication, academics and social science, explore the whole meaning of a brand, not just in the reality of today’s marketplace but also in the new global environment. Are we witnessing the fading out of the traditional concepts of the brand as a deliverer of consumer expectations and the arrival of alternative models? What impact does the reach of new media, aggressive social activism, changing global sensitivities, agricultural, industrial and economic practice, the unpredictability and uncertainty of an increasingly complex environment, and, above all, a fully participating consumer who influences the product and brand dynamics, have on brand behaviour and a brand’s dialogue with the consumer? Brands under Fire questions whether there is a need to re-evaluate our relationship with brands and redesign it to make it more meaningful—to go beyond the traditional concept of the brand as merely a transaction between seller and buyer to new definitions of what today’s brands can be. Brands under Fire will earn a place on the bookshelves of frontline managers, strategists and practitioners alike. Printed Pages: 232. 026722

Brahman and Person: Essays by Richard De Smet
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834593; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Brahman and Person is a collection of essays by the late Richard De Smet (1916-1997) on the topic of person in Indian thought. Overturning the current interpretation, De Smet proposes that the nirguna Brahman can be regarded as properly personal, provided person is understood in the original and classical sense that emerged in the Christian effort to speak about the mysteries of the Trinity and the Incarnation. The rendering of Saguna and nirguna Brahman as personal and impersonal, instead, originated with the Western translators of Sanskrit works, who were influenced by an individualistic idea of the person and the consequent restriction of its application to the human being. De Smet also dedicated attention to the question of the human person in Indian and Western thought over a number of essays, proposing that a properly holistic and organic notion of the human person can be found especially in the thought of Sankara.Printed Pages: 294. 102136

The Buddha and His Religion
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121508088; Reprint; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present work is a critical study of Buddhism and its doctrine, originally published in French as Le Bouddha et sa religion in 1866. It gives an outline of the history of Buddhism, the birth of Buddha, his renunciation, his teachings and his death. The Buddhist doctrines as put forth by the canons are carefully expounded in relation to western religion and philosophy, and judged according to their merits and defects. It also narrates the spread of Buddhism beyond its place or origin to Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia, China and Ceylon. Particular emphasis is given to the state of Buddhism as it existed twelve hundred years after the death of Buddha, as is set forth in the Travels and memoirs of Xuanzang. A separate chapter is devoted to Buddhism in Ceylon. Contribution of scholars, like B.H. Hodgson, Alexander Csoma, George Turnour, Eugene Burnouf and Spence Hardy who were pioneers in the study of Buddhism and are responsible for all that we know of Buddhism today is also discussed. History of the Gujarat Kingdom 1458-1537
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1975; 8121502950; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This book deals with the political history of Gujarat during the period of its climax of power. It makes a detailed study of the careers and achievements of Mahmud Shah Begarh, Muzaffar Shah II and Bahadur Shah. The Kingdom reached the zenith of its power and glory in the eventful, thought short, reign of Bahadur Shah. The struggle of the rulers of Gujarat with neighbouring states has been discussed in great detail. The death of Bahadur Shah was followed by a period of disintegration of Gujarat by Akbar in 1573. The author's account is based on a study of original sources and supplies a desideratum in the study of the political history of Gujarat. The volume presents a well-documented and highly informative study. Printed Pages: 336. 015887

Profiles of Eminent Goans: Past and Present
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8170226198; Hardcover; New; New;
This is a record of the many achievements of the people of Goa, both in and beyond Goa, principally since the advent of the Portuguese in Goa in the sixteenth century. It is divided into convenient chapters with a prelude to each so as to facilitate in-depth understanding of a specific achievement running through the pages of that chapter. It does not claim to be history or even that the information is complete at a given going in time. A study of this kind is an ongoing process and, conceivably, there may still be some eminent personalities either left out through inadvertence or because of the difficulty of obtaining the necessary data. A future edition, it is hoped, will probably include those besides adding many new ones. Printed Pages: 347. 112405

Individuals, Householders, Citizens: Family Planning in India
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8189884476; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The creation of widespread public consent for family planning in Kerala, which ensured the non-coercive implementation of birth control in Malayali society, has been regarded as no less than the jewel in the crown of the ‘Kerala Model’ of social development. Individuals, Householders, Citizens reconstructs the history of the generation of such assent to produce a critical examination of this crucial aspect of social development in Kerala. It participates in the ongoing feminist critique of the Kerala Model, seeking to unravel the particular ways in which people were interpellated into the discourse of Family Planning. Devika’s study adds to the new interdisciplinary work on questions traditionally considered native to demography. It employs some of the insights of economists and demographers on Kerala’s demographic transition as entry points for critical historical inquiry into questions of gender and power in contemporary Kerala. The book is of interest to anyone interested in Kerala’s experience of social development and its demographic ‘achievements’. Contents Acknowledgements Introduction 1. J. Donald Walter shows the importance of seeing oneself and all things as aspects of a greater reality, of seeking to enter into conscious attunement with the reality, and of seeing all things as channels for the expression of that reality. 102219

Your Sun Sign as a Spiritual Guide
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8178220490; Softcover; New;
Books on the sun signs rarely emphasize self-help. What most of them say is, "This is the nature you were born with. Enjoy it, or learn to live with it." By contrast, this book tells the reader, "Here are things you can do to improve the nature you were born with." Your Sun Sign as A Spiritual Guide, however, goes far beyond merely intellectual discussion. Fresh, humorous, and full of wisdom, it provides a wealth of original insight in a field burdened by the thoughtless repetition of carelessly worked-out theories. All the ancient teachings stress the importance, to any true understanding of the astrological science, of the faculty of intuition. The convincing insights Mr. Walters offers into human nature are born of forty years of meditative practice, as well as of a lifetime of experience in counseling others. It is, above all, his intuitive grasp of his subject that gives this book its unique flavor.Printed Pages: 160. 102645

Short Stories from the History of the Indian Army Since August 1947
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382652175; Softcover; New;
Colonel Francis has done yeoman service to the army and to the nation by compiling this labour of love that describes important episodes of the Indian Army in wars and in warlike operations, briefly but in sufficient detail to keep the reader fully engrossed. The book is much more than history; it is about the actions of gallant officers and men of the Indian Army; their indomitable spirit; their unmatched bravery; and above all their sacrifices for the nation, which in many cases snatched victory from near hopeless situations. The book contains details of all important wars and warlike operations fought by the Indian Army after Independence. From the saving of Jammu & Kashmir in 1947-48, when the army was fully engaged in dealing with the violence of the Partition and dividing itself in to two entities, one each for India and Pakistan; to the 1962 War that was an overall debacle, but where our troops fought ferociously in many places and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy; to Pakistan's getting a bloody nose in 1965, even as the Indian Army was in the midst of a major reorganisation; to the glorious history-making victory in 1971; and finally the Kargil War of 1999 where a highly adverse operational situation was converted to victory on account of the bravery of our young officers and soldiers.Printed Pages: 140. 103257

Change and Continuity in Indian Religion
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121500141; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this book the author intends to make some critical remarks apropos of substratum theories advanced to explain the numerous differences between the ancient Vedic culture of India and Hinduism. It would appear to him that the problems with which we are confronted in studying the history of India are much more complicated than certain archaeologists, linguists and students of the history of religions would have us believe and that many hypotheses based on a predominant influence of the substratum are ill-founded. The book contains studies on various subjects which are intended to criticize some of these theories and to show that very complex developments and difficult problems have often been unjustly simplified. Certain cultural changes which at first sight may appear to have been due to the impact of foreign elements may on second thoughts be rather ascribed to an internal development within the Aryan community. After a general introduction on substratum theories there are chapters on Soman, Amrta, and the Moon; on the absence of vahanas (mounts, horses, etc. of gods) in the Veda and their occurrence in Hindu art and literature; the number sixteen, the Isvara idea; maya; gifts; the guru; brahmacarya and a long chapter on diksa. Visnuism and Sivaism: A Comparison
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 812150287X; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This expanded version of Professor Gonda's Jordan lectures, given at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London in 1969, presents, not a regular account of the history of Visnuism and Sivaism, but rather a detailed discussion of some of those historical, doctrinal, ritual, and literary aspects of both religious currents which do not seem to have attracted the attention they deserve. Being comparative in character it is an attempt to delineate the main characteristics of each tradition and to reconsider some vexed problems relating to their origin and the history of their theological doctrines and practices. Special emphasis is laid upon their various interrelations, upon those many features which have their roots in the Vedic past, and upon the partly parallel and often divergent development of their rituals and philosophies.
