Your Sun Sign as a Spiritual Guide
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8178220490; Softcover; New;
Books on the sun signs rarely emphasize self-help. What most of them say is, "This is the nature you were born with. Enjoy it, or learn to live with it." By contrast, this book tells the reader, "Here are things you can do to improve the nature you were born with." Your Sun Sign as A Spiritual Guide, however, goes far beyond merely intellectual discussion. Fresh, humorous, and full of wisdom, it provides a wealth of original insight in a field burdened by the thoughtless repetition of carelessly worked-out theories. All the ancient teachings stress the importance, to any true understanding of the astrological science, of the faculty of intuition. The convincing insights Mr. Walters offers into human nature are born of forty years of meditative practice, as well as of a lifetime of experience in counseling others. It is, above all, his intuitive grasp of his subject that gives this book its unique flavor.Printed Pages: 160. 102645

Short Stories from the History of the Indian Army Since August 1947
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382652175; Softcover; New;
Colonel Francis has done yeoman service to the army and to the nation by compiling this labour of love that describes important episodes of the Indian Army in wars and in warlike operations, briefly but in sufficient detail to keep the reader fully engrossed. The book is much more than history; it is about the actions of gallant officers and men of the Indian Army; their indomitable spirit; their unmatched bravery; and above all their sacrifices for the nation, which in many cases snatched victory from near hopeless situations. The book contains details of all important wars and warlike operations fought by the Indian Army after Independence. From the saving of Jammu & Kashmir in 1947-48, when the army was fully engaged in dealing with the violence of the Partition and dividing itself in to two entities, one each for India and Pakistan; to the 1962 War that was an overall debacle, but where our troops fought ferociously in many places and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy; to Pakistan's getting a bloody nose in 1965, even as the Indian Army was in the midst of a major reorganisation; to the glorious history-making victory in 1971; and finally the Kargil War of 1999 where a highly adverse operational situation was converted to victory on account of the bravery of our young officers and soldiers.Printed Pages: 140. 103257

Change and Continuity in Indian Religion
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121500141; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this book the author intends to make some critical remarks apropos of substratum theories advanced to explain the numerous differences between the ancient Vedic culture of India and Hinduism. It would appear to him that the problems with which we are confronted in studying the history of India are much more complicated than certain archaeologists, linguists and students of the history of religions would have us believe and that many hypotheses based on a predominant influence of the substratum are ill-founded. The book contains studies on various subjects which are intended to criticize some of these theories and to show that very complex developments and difficult problems have often been unjustly simplified. Certain cultural changes which at first sight may appear to have been due to the impact of foreign elements may on second thoughts be rather ascribed to an internal development within the Aryan community. After a general introduction on substratum theories there are chapters on Soman, Amrta, and the Moon; on the absence of vahanas (mounts, horses, etc. of gods) in the Veda and their occurrence in Hindu art and literature; the number sixteen, the Isvara idea; maya; gifts; the guru; brahmacarya and a long chapter on diksa. Visnuism and Sivaism: A Comparison
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 812150287X; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This expanded version of Professor Gonda's Jordan lectures, given at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London in 1969, presents, not a regular account of the history of Visnuism and Sivaism, but rather a detailed discussion of some of those historical, doctrinal, ritual, and literary aspects of both religious currents which do not seem to have attracted the attention they deserve. Being comparative in character it is an attempt to delineate the main characteristics of each tradition and to reconsider some vexed problems relating to their origin and the history of their theological doctrines and practices. Special emphasis is laid upon their various interrelations, upon those many features which have their roots in the Vedic past, and upon the partly parallel and often divergent development of their rituals and philosophies. The Lotus and the Lion: Buddhism and the British Empire
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8121512069; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Buddhism is indisputably gaining prominence in the West, as is evidenced by the growth of Buddhist practice within many traditions and keen interest in meditation and mindfulness. In The Lotus and the Lion, J. Jeffrey Franklin traces the historical and cultural origins of Western Buddhism, showing that the British Empire was a primary engine for curiosity about and then engagement with the Buddhisms that the British encountered in India and elsewhere in Asia. As a result, Victorian and Edwardian England witnessed the emergence of comparative religious scholarship with a focus on Buddhism, the appearance of Buddhist characters and concepts in literary works, the publication of hundreds of articles on Buddhism in popular and intellectual periodicals, and the dawning of syncretic religions that incorporated elements derived from Buddhism. In this fascinating book, Franklin analyzes responses to and constructions of Buddhism by popular novelists and poets, early scholars of religion, inventors of new religions, social theorists and philosophers, and a host of social and religious commentators. Examining the work of figures ranging from Rudyard Kipling and D. H. Lawrence to H. P. Blavatsky, Thomas Henry Huxley, and F. Max Müller, Franklin provides insight into cultural upheavals that continue to reverberate into our own time. Those include the violent intermixing of cultures brought about by imperialism and colonial occupation, the trauma and self-reflection that occur when a Christian culture comes face-to-face with another religion, and the debate between spiritualism and materialism. The Lotus and the Lion demonstrates that the nineteenth-century encounter with Buddhism subtly but profoundly changed Western civilization forever. Printed Pages: 288. 029166

Abhidhamma Philosophy
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2006; 8121701899; Hardcover; New; New;
The Volume I, The Author has compressed the whole of the Abhidhamma-Pitika and its supplement the Visudhimagga in this small book, mostly written in aphoristic small sentences. The Book is very popular and today it is taught as the first book to the students of Abhidhamma in the monasteries of Ceylon, Burma, Thiland & Indo-China. It is rather better not to call it the first book for it is really a guide through the whole bulk of Abhidhamma-Pitaka. It gives a very vivid exposition of the method adopted in the analysis and grouping of the state of thing (Dhammas) in the Dhammasangini as a system. The Volume II, is ment for the student who after studying the Abhidhammatt-sangoh is going to take up the original books of the Abhidhamma-Pitaka; & for this reason, the author freely quoted passages from the Pali text, an intimate acquaintance with the languages and style of which would be very necessary at this stage.Printed Pages: 293. 103708

The Collected Works of J. Krishnamurti: The Observer is the Observed (1945-1948), Vol. IV
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120833570; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Until the end of his life at the age of ninety, Krishnamurti-the world teacher-traveled the world speaking as a private person. The rejection of all spiritual and psychological authority, including his own, is a fundamental theme. A major concern is the social structure and how it conditions the individual. The emphasis in his talks and writings is on the psychological barriers that prevent clarity of perception. Because his subject is all - embracing, the Collected Works which are in 18 Volumes, are of compelling interest. Within his talks in any one year, Krishnamurti was not able to cover the whole range of his vision, but broad amplifications of particular themes are found throughout these volumes. In them he lays the foundations of many of the concepts he used in later years. The Collected Works contain Krishnamurti's previously published talks, discussions, answers to specific questions, and writings for the years 1933 through 1967. They are anauthentic record of his teachings, taken from transcripts of verbatim shorthand reports and tape recordings. Jiddu Krishnamurti was born in 1895 of Brahmin Parents in South India. At the age of fourteen he was proclaimed the coming World Teacher by Annie Besant, then President of the Theosophical Society, an international organization that emphasized the unity of world religions. Mrs. Besant adopted the boy and took him to England, where he was educated and prepared for his coming role. In 1911 a new worldwide organization was formed with Krishnamurti as its head, solely to prepare its members for hisadvent as World Teacher. In 1929, after many years of questioning himself and the destiny imposed upon him, Krishnamurti disbanded this organization, saying: Truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or to coerce people along any particular path. My only concern is to set men absolutely, unconditionally free. Until he end of his life at the age of ninety, Krishnamurti traveled the world speaking as a private person. The rejection of all spiritual and psychological authority, including his own, is a fundamental theme. A major concern is the social structure and how it conditions the individual. The emphasis in his talks and writings is on the psychological barriers that prevent clarity of perception. In the mirror of relationship, each of us can come to understand the content of his own consciousness, which is common to all humanity. We can do this, not analytically, but directly in a manner Krishnamurti describes at length. In observing this content we discover within ourselves the division of the observer and what is observed. He points out that this division, which prevents direct perception, is the root of human conflict. His central vision did not waver after 1929, but Krishnamurti strove for the rest of his life to make his language even more simple and clear. There is a development in his exposition. From year to year he used new terms and new approaches to his subject, with different nuances. Because his subject is all embracing, the Collected Works are of compelling interest. The Mirror of Relationship Love, Sex and Chastity: A Selection of Passages from the Techings of J. Krishnath (Study Book Series), Vol. VI
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120832752; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Krishnamurti offers provocative, new, and sensitive answers to perennial questions about: * Why relationships are difficult? * The difference between pleasure and desire. * Why is sex a problem in my life? * What is chastity? * Am I really in love? * How can I live with another without conflict? "There is no escape from relationship. In that relationship, which is the mirror in which we can see ourselves, we can discover what we are, our reactions, our prejudices, our fears, depression, anxieties, loneliness, sorrow, pain, grief. We can also discover whether we lose or there is no such thing as love. Se, we will examine this question of relationship because that is the basis of love." - J. Krishnamurti, Madras, India, 1982 "Why does the mind think about sex at all? Why? Why has it become a central issue in your life? Sex becomes an extraordinary, difficult and complex problem so long as you do not understand the mind, which thinks about the problem. The act itself can never be a problem but the thought about the act creates the problem." - J. Krishnamurti, The First and Last Freedom.Printed Pages: 140. 102024

The Observer and the Observed: A Selection of Passage from the Teachings of J. Krishnamurti (Study Book Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120832760; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Observer and the Observed highlights one of the central explorations of Krishnamurti's teaching: the division we feel between ourselves and everything else, and what it means to question this division, not as a philosophy, but in everyday life."To free the mind of the observer, no escape is possible. Don't escape; don't seek. Face the fact of what you are; don't translate in terms of what you think you are, of what you should be, which is again an escape. When you face the fact of what you actually are, without escaping, without naming it, without the word, then the fact becomes totally different. When you do that with every reaction, with every movement of thought, then there is a freedom from the observer; then there is a totally different dimension of space."Printed Pages: 105. 102025

Modern Atomism (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization, Vol XII, Part 4)
Project of History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture/Centre for Studies in Civilizations; Delhi, India; 2017; 8187586737; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India’s heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact, contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called ‘methodological pluralism’. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. The notion that all matter is a composite of elementary atoms was familiar both to ancient Indians and ancient Greeks. But atomic theory was forgotten for a long time. Today everyone knows that atoms are not invisible. Modern Atomism is the physical theory that tries to answer the questions. What are the fundamental entities which constitute the Universe? What are the forces or interactions between these fundamental entities? What are Time and Space? While theory is remarkably successful in accounting for vast array of experimental facts, it is still starkly incomplete. All the articles in this volume describe how our current understanding came about. First and foremost are, the accumulation of experimental data and meaningful ordering of the data. These are obtained by controlled laboratory experiments and astronomical observations. This volume describes and summarizes results of these efforts. The volume will be useful to all those who want to know about our universe. It will be useful for science students and teachers alike especially in South Asia. Science is of course universal, but by inclusion of significant achievements of scientists of south Asia in this volume, it is hoped that more young people here, will be interested to actively take part in research and join the grand enterprise of mankind to explore the wonderful mysteries of nature. Buddhist Art in India, Ceylon and Java
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8121513138; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
J. Ph. Vogel’s Buddhist Art in India, Ceylon and Java is an English translation of the original De Buddhistische Kunst Van Voor—Indiee, enlarged in scope and including also an account of the Buddhist art of Ceylon and Java. The present book has been written with the chief object to give a historical outline of Indo-Buddhist art, to sketch its various schools in their main characteristics and to trace their mutual relationship. Attempt has also been made to show by Vogel in what manner the artistic phenomena must have followed the religious developments and spiritual movements. Apart from an Introduction giving a brief background, the entire period of nearly fifteen hundred years of Buddhist art from the third century BC to the twelfth century AD has been covered in seven chapters and two chapters on the Buddhist art of Ceylon and Java respectively. Coming as its does from the pen of J. Ph. Vogel, the Buddhist Art in India, Ceylon and Java commends itself as a most useful handbook on the subject. The book contains a very representative selection of photographs on the subject included in thirty-nine plates apart from a ground-plan of Borobodur, the great monument of the Mahayana, with its harmonious blending of Indian and local elements and wonderful display of sculptural decoration. The book also contains an index and bibliography giving titles of principal works of reference. Printed Pages: 127. 039849
