A Social History of Christianity: North-west India Since 1800
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195690451; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Christian community in India emerged from an Indian rather than a foreign or an imperial context. Its internal dynamics were shaped far more by Indian social realities than by missionary designs. This book presents, for the first time, a connected and comprehensive social history of Christianity, in north-west India, the region which the British called 'The Punjab and its Dependencies'. Today it comprises the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, the Union Territories of Delhi and Chandigarh, and the Pakistani Punjab and North-West Frontier Province. This book covers the history of the north-west up to 1947 after which it focuses on developments within India and deals only indirectly with Pakistan. It is arranged chronologically. Each chapter is set off by important events in the region, starting from the turn of the nineteenth century when Ranjit Singh came to power in Lahore (1799) and the British in Delhi (1803). The author highlights the events of 1857 that had a traumatic effect on the Christians; how Christians later responded to the rise, first of religious reform/revivalist movements, and then of nationalist as well as communal politics in the north-west. The closing chapters discuss the transfer of power within churches from foreign missionaries to Indians, the proliferation of churches, and the ongoing struggles of the Christian community following independence. Throughout the book, the author pays special attention to the Christian community’s caste composition—the ways in which caste status and social mobility affected intra and inter-community relations—religious diversity, uneven demographic distribution, as well as its development both as a community and as a religious movement in the region. 026132

Jewellery of Tibet and the Himalayas
Victoria & Albert Museum/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2004; 1851774238; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 25 Cm
John Clarke has travelled widely in the area and his fascinating text discusses the connection of jewellery to religion and folk beliefs and its rich and many-layered symbolism. Drawing together historical texts and the oral traditions of living craftsmen, he gives a picture of how goldsmiths and jewellers operated in the past and today, and how jewellery was worn then and now. The vibrant combination of gold and silver with turquoise, coral, amber and pearls has an extraordinary visual impact and is valued as much for its religious and talismanic associations as for adornment. This beautifully illustrated book contains newly commissioned photography and draws on the finest examples from the V&A and other British collections, both public and private. It brings into the spotlight one of the richest decorative traditions of the world, and one increasingly appreciated and emulated in the west. Its attractive, accessible format will ensure its appeal to a wide range of markets, from fashion and travel to collecting and design. The Buddhist Visnu: Religious Transformation, Politics, and Culture
Columbia University Press; New York, USA; 2005; 0231133235; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
John Holt's groundbreaking study examines the assimilation, transformation, and subordination of the Hindu deity Visnu within the contexts of Sri Lankan history and Sinhala Buddhist religious culture. Holt argues that political agendas and social forces, as much as doctrinal concerns, have shaped the shifting patterns of the veneration of Visnu in Sri Lanka. Holt begins with a comparative look at the assimilation of the Buddha in Hinduism. He then explores the role and rationale of medieval Sinhala kings in assimilating Visnu into Sinhala Buddhism. Offering analyses of texts, many of which have never before been translated into English, Holt considers the development of Visnu in Buddhist literature and the changing practices of deity veneration. Shifting to the present, Holt describes the efforts of contemporary Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka to discourage the veneration of Visnu, suggesting that many are motivated by a reactionary fear that their culture and society will soon be overrun by the influences and practices of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians. Contents Preface Introduction: The Historical and Theoretical Problems The "Hindu Buddha" and the "Buddhist Visnu" "Unceasing Waves": Brahmanical and Hindu Influences on Medieval Sinhala Buddhist Culture in Sri Lanka The Sandalwood Image: Upulvan Deviyo and the Origins of the Cult of Visnu in Sinhala Buddhist Sri Lanka Transformed Deity: The "Buddhist Visnu" in Sinhala Literature and Liturgy Introduction: The Cult of Visnu in Buddhist Sri Lanka Seeking Protection: Cultic Life at the Udarata Visnu Devalayas The Valiyaka Mangalya: The Curative Powers of the Mala Raja Legacies of the "Buddhist Visnu": Myth and Cult at the Alutnuvara Devalaya Minister of Defense? The Secret of the Creative Vacuum: Man and the Energy Dance
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178223376; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Modern man has sought answers to life’s deepest questions through and increasingly detailed analysis of matter. Yet results proved elusive, pointing as much, if not more, to the importance of the seeker’s own mind as to matter itself.Mystics, on the other hand, have sought answers to the same mysteries through an inverse process: a ‘turning within’, studying mind and consciousness through specific meditational practices. But both have reached the some conclusion: that mind and matter, energy and consciousness are too intimately entwined to be separately understood.Printed Pages: 426. 102284

John Dowson's A Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology and Religion, Geography, History, and Literature is a handy reference-work prepared as an aid to the scholars and lay readers interested in these aspects of the past of India. It contains information on a vast array of subjects, concepts, personages, names, events, etc., which frequently occur in the ancient Indian literature and religious works. For the uninitiated, the Dictionary is a useful guide for understanding the obscure and the unknown subjects. The present Dictionary is not merely an alphabetical list of terms and subjects; it contains, compact and condensed information culled together from various sources about each subject. The author has primarily depended upon authoritative translations and works of eminent scholars for the compilation of the Dictionary. Besides the literal meaning, the compiler has also given a full description of the subjects with necessary details. For those interested in delving deeper into the controversial subjects included in the Dictionary, references of learned articles and European works have also been supplied. A brief Introduction of the subject outlining the history of the works alluded to in the Dictionary, a Sanskrit Index and a General Index add to the usefulness of the volume and is a must for every bookshelf. A Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology and Religion: Geography, History and Literature (Andhra University Philosophical Studies: 10)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124601089; Softcover; New;
Professor Dowson's Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology and Religion is now offered not only in a fresh format, but in a fresh, state-of-the-art typeset as well. Incorporated here, in addition, are standard, meticulously worked-out diacritical marks -- as rather mechanical aids in comprehending the transliteration of Indic sounds, more specially of the Sanskrit alphabet, into English. In its alphabetically arranged articles of varying lengths, the Dictionary tries to encompass the vast Hindu pantheon, in all its complexity and symbolic/metaphorical representations. Covering, thus, a whole mix of mythological characters: gods and demons, prajapatis and raksasas, it also presents explanatory accounts of important events/episodes, legends, literary works, and even geographical locales, associated with Hindu myths and religious beliefs. Acclaimed worldwide ever since its first appearance, the Dictionary sustains its essentially undiminishing appeal to the scholars and general readers seeking to discover for themselves the awesome world of Hindu mythology and the grand cosmogonic design it unveils.Printed Pages: 448. 100507

Building Conservation Philosophy (Third Edition)
Donhead Publishing Ltd; Dorset, UK; 2003; 187339456X; Third Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 18 Cms x 25 Cms
Now published by Donhead in association with the College of Estate Management, Reading, this classic work has been re-designed and updated for this third edition to include new material and illustrations. This is a book about ideas rather than techniques. Public thirst for visible evidence of the past is not, as it is often represented, a recent phenomenon. It was already well developed when an overseer of ancient monuments was appointed in sixth-century Rome. But if the desire to preserve aspects of the past is to do more than respond to popular whims and fashions or represent the personal views of ivory-towered scholars and specialists, it needs to have some kind of solid logical basis. Philosophical questions are raised at every turn. On what basis can buildings be singled out as ‘historic buildings’, demanding special protection? On what authority can we justify interfering with private property rights in pursuing such protective processes? And how should we judge what is acceptable and unacceptable in the treatment of the buildings we value? In this third, substantially revised edition, the author examines the nature of monuments and the varied motives for preserving them. He traces the history of movements to preserve old buildings and the furious conflicts that have frequently surrounded restoration campaigns. Philosophical problems arising in modern conservation practice, including such controversial issues as ‘skin-deep preservation’ and the use of substitute materials, are considered in detail. More space is devoted in this edition to contextual issues. New sections deal with issues of sustainability and the relationship of buildings to the townscape and landscape. The number of illustrations has also been greatly increased. The book is designed especially for students approaching the subject for the first time but may well be found stimulating by practitioners. No easy formulae are offered. What conservators, have to nurture, the author insists, is an inquiring and self-critical frame of mind enabling them to proceed from comprehensive knowledge of the buildings for the time being in their care, via logical argument, to defensible, if not inevitable, solutions. About the author: John Earl, who trained as a building surveyor, has specialised since 1956 in various aspects of building conservation, ranging from physical care and restoration to statutory control, recording and the formulation of planning policies. He worked for many years in the LCC and GLC Historic Buildings Division. In 1986 he became the director of the Theatres Trust, a statutory body responsible for the better protection of theatres for the benefit of the nation. Since 1996 he has been consultant to the Trust and a frequent writer and lecturer on general building conservation and theatre preservation issues. He is author of a number of major conservation plans. This book is the fruit of his early involvement with the RICS post-graduate diploma and the surprising discovery that there was no readily available and accessible text on the philosophy of conservation that could be offered to students. Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8170690099; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
John Garrett's A Classical Dictionary of India and its supplement is a comprehensive reference work on the Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina works of Ancient India. All persons and topics found in there works are described in this book. This work is a dictionary in the sense that the entries are arranged in alphabetical order; actually this is more of an encyclopaedia than a dictionary. Here the topics are dealt with in the manner of an encyclopaedia with the sole aim of giving the user a full picture of the subject; for this reason no restriction has been placed on the description. Quotations from other writers are included where they are necessary for better elucidation. Though diacritical signs are not used for the main entry, they have been used profusely within the definition, thereby helping the reader to pronounce proper nouns correctly without trouble.
