The Buddhist Tantras: Light on Indo-Tibetan Esotericism
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120806999; Fifth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The author here reprints a number of his published Tantra essays, and writes some others to fill out this work. It has much material not readily available elsewhere in Western language sources. It concludes with a correlation of the two Tantra collections of Tibetan Buddhist canon, which are the revealed Tantra in the Kanjur, and exegetical works in the Tanjur. The work is leavened with illustrations and drawings. This book has been divided into four sections. Part One is an Introduction which places the position of the Buddhist Tantras within Mahayana Buddhism and recalls their early literary history, especially the Guhyasamajatantra; the section also covers Buddhist Genesis and the Tantric tradition as well as the analogical thinking in the Buddhist Tantras. Part Two: the author discusses the foundations of the Buddhist Tantras-he considers the Tantric presentation of divinity; the preparation of disciples and the meaning of initiation; some Tantric materials; symbolism of the mandala-palace; Tantric ritual and the symbolism of its attainments; twilight language and a Tantric song. Part Three: This section is devoted to Special Studies which are very rarely available to the general public, such as the nine orifices of the body and the Tantric teachings of the inner Zodiac; female energy and symbolism in the Buddhist Tantras; and the five-fold ritual symbolism of passion. Part Four: The Bibliographical Research contains a correlation between the trantric portions of the Kanjur and the Tanjur.Printed Pages: 265. 102312

Logics of War: Explanations for Limited and Unlimited Conflicts
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382652298; Hardcover; New; New;
Most wars between countries end quickly and at relatively low cost. The few in which high-intensity fighting continues for years bring about a disproportionate amount of death and suffering. What separates these few unusually long and intense wars from the many conflicts that are far less destructive? In Logics of War, Alex Weisiger tests three explanations for a nation's decision to go to war and continue fighting regardless of the costs. He combines sharp statistical analysis of interstate wars over the past two centuries with nine narrative case studies. He examines well-known conflicts like World War II and the Persian Gulf War and unfamiliar ones such as the 18641870 Paraguayan War (or the War of the Triple Alliance), which proportionally caused more deaths than any other war in modern history.When leaders go to war expecting easy victory, events usually correct their misperceptions quickly and with fairly low casualties, thereby setting the stage for a negotiated agreement. A second explanation involves motives born of domestic politics; as war becomes more intense, however, leaders are increasingly constrained in their ability to continue the fighting. Particularly destructive wars instead arise from mistrust of an opponent's intentions. Countries that launch preventive wars to forestall expected decline tend to have particularly ambitious war aims that they hold to even when fighting goes poorly. Moreover, in some cases, their opponents interpret the preventive attack as evidence of a dispositional commitment to aggression, resulting in the rejection of any form of negotiation and a demand for unconditional surrender. Weisiger's treatment of a topic of central concern to scholars of major wars will also be read with great interest by military historians, political psychologists, and sociologists.Printed Pages: 320. 103256

Archaeological Survey of India: Reports (1862-1884), 23 Vols
Agam Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 1994; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Sir Alexander Cunningham's contribution in Indian History and Indian Archaeology is great and in fact he may be regarded as the father of Indian History and Archaeology. He was appointed as Director General of Archaeology in 1862. This year and the appointment of Sir Alexander Cunningham are the beginning points of Systematic research in the field of Indian Archaeology. Under Cunningh the Archaeological research in India was founded and well-established during the period 1862-1884. Cunningham's extensive archaeological researches in all parts of India, facing many hazards and hindrances like old age, ill-health, the-then technical know-how employed for excavations and survey all were an Odyssey facing many odds. But Cunningham's personal hardships and he himself are long forgotten and have gone into pages of history. Now Cunningham is remembered for his Reports of Archaeological Survey of India. His monumental twenty-three Volumes of Reports and one Volume of Index published during the years 1862-1884 is not forgotten. In fact, they are the founding stones of Indian History and Archaeology. They are the base upon which many generations of Indian historical researches based their researches and future generations will continue to do so. Since the publication of these Reports' one century and many years have passed. This time-period is long enough to make a work rare and forgotten. So it is good to see 'Old' Cunningham's work in a fresh reprint. His reports are still useful and relevant for Indian History and historical researches. Bound in attractive and uniform bindings these Reports would be a pride possession.Printed Pages: 5000. 101570

Mahabodhi or the Great Buddhist Temple under the Bodhi Tree at Buddha-Gaya
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8121508134; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
Marking the spot of Buddha's enlightenment, Bodhgaya is greatly revered by Buddhists, especially for the bodhi tree beneath which the Master sat in meditation. After the death of Buddha, Bodhgaya flourished as an important religious centre and numerous shrines, stupas and monasteries were erected. The site continued to attract pilgrims and was only abandoned in the 15th century. The revival of interest in Bodhgaya began in 1802, when the Burmese sent a mission there. It soon attracted the attention of British administration as well. Francis Buchanon-Hamilton visited the site in 1811, and published a report in 1836. Alexander Cunningham first visited the site in 1861, and recommended the excavations be conducted. These were undertaken by Major Mead in 1863, but no report was published. Cunningham returned to Bodhgaya in 1871, and then between 1875 and 1880, the British government in co-operation with the Burmese mission, began to repair the site thoroughly. The remains of Bodhgaya date from as early as the Maurya and Shunga eras, as well as from later Gupta and Pala periods. The site is dominated by the soaring tower of the Mahabodhi temple, which is built in front of the bodhi tree. The temple is one of the important monuments of ancient India and has been frought with controversy, since the late 19th century, when restorations gave it its present form. Built over earlier temples, it stands on the site of the Buddha's enlightenment and is the sole survivor of monumental brick traditions in eastern India. The temple is surrounded by a stone railing and innumerable votive stupas and several shrines. Present work first published in 1892, is a detailed report of Alexander Cunningham's visit to the temple in 1881, and describes in detail the important discoveries made by him. The Stupa of Bharhut: A Buddhist Monument ornamented with Numerous Sculptures illustrative of Buddhist Legend and History in the Third Century BC
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8121507936; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Bharhut is located at the head of the narrow Mahiyar valley in central India, 200 miles northwest of Sanchi, where the ancient trade route from the western coastal regions to the eastern metropolis of Pataliputra joined the road to northern Sravasti. In the days of Mauryan Emperor Asoka (c. 272–234 BC) a brick stupa measuring about 68 feet in diameter and covered with plaster was constructed at Bharhut. During the reign of the Sungas, who were in power in the second century BC and reigned until the year 72 BC, a richly decorated stone railing, 88 feet in diameter, was added to enclose the mound. Nothing is now visible of the celebrated stupa at this Buddhist site other than a shallow depression in the ground. Bricks and sandstone fragments are strewn all around. The remains of the sandstone railing pillar and gateways that surrounded the stupa have all been removed. They are mostly displayed in the Bharhut gallery at the Indian Museum, Calcutta. The present work originally published in 1879, describes the stupa when it was originally discovered by Alexander Cunningham and the sculptured scenes and Jatakas that adorned the railings and the gateways of the stupa. Hindu-Catholic Engagements in Goa: Religion, Colonialism and Modernity
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125055215; Hardcover; New; New;
Hindu–Catholic Engagements in Goa offers a novel perspective on the Portuguese empire and Catholic hegemony in Asia that for almost half a millennium—from 1510 to 1961—had its capital in Goa. Based on fresh archival studies and extensive ethnography, it reveals the dramatic role of religion at the beginning of colonialism and modernity and provides insight into Goa’s intricate Hindu-Catholic syncretism today. Vasco Da Gama’s celebrated passage to India (1497–99) not only initiated a period of Christian expansion, in which Jesuit missionaries declared war to the alleged ‘idolatry’ of Hindus. The engagement with the until then largely unknown and unexpectedly rich culture of Hinduism was also part of profound modern transformations that, in the long run, lead Christian Europe to recognize the plurality of religions around the globe.Hindu village gods and Catholic patron saints commonly attract veneration from people of the respective ‘Other’ religious community and, yet, do not create confusion between the distinct identities of Hindus and Catholics. At the core of this seeming syncretistic paradox lies a communal concern for neighborhood, genealogy, protection and health that, at times, overrules doctrinal divides in the village communities. Hindus and Catholics share trust in communicating with the divine and holy in ways that occasionally favor ritual over belief and appreciate substance before meaning. Contrary to postcolonial theories of ‘Othering’, this book identifies religion thus as an inherently hybrid dimension of the intersection of colonialism and modernity and identifies local, rather than universal and epistemic, rather than ethical principles at the core of Goa’s remarkable religious pluralism.Printed Pages: 228. 101756

The Shah-Namah of Fardusi
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8175365072; Softcover; New;
The book is the most extensive rendering into English couplets of the great Epic Shah Namah in Persian language by the immortal poet, Fardusi.The plan adopted has been that of taking the introduction, with a portion of the history of the earliest kings of Persia in the mythical and pre-historic ages, and following these with prose translations of the reigns of the best-known monarchs and with various celebrated episodes, such as that of the fight of the hero Rustam and his son Suhrab, and from those epochs down to that of Yazdagird., about A.H. 411 (A.D. 1020), during the period of the history of Persia spanning more than 3500 years. Between these there has been inserted an epitome of the history of the intervening periods in prose, so that the whole conveys a full impression of the entire poem.This is the most faithful rendering in its adherence to the original. The uncompromising fidelity and the method followed by the translator will surely enable the readers to master the peculiarities and intricacies of the original through the medium of translation. O’Keeffe’s edition of the medieval Irish text Buile Shuibhne in 1913, the enigmatic presentation of its main protagonist Suibhne Geilt has become a subject of a plurality of scholarly analyses, which have sought to understand the true nature of his madness. This study charts the ways in which Buile Shuibhne has been interpreted in twentieth-century scholarship, by paying particular attention to the religious allegorical readings of the text. The examination of four prevalent interpretative frameworks – historical, pre-Christian, Christian, and anthropological – relates theoretical conceptions of literary theory, comparative religion and historiography to the study of medieval narrative material, by considering the nature of different methodological presuppositions that have guided the scholars’ understanding of the tale’s meaning. The integration of issues relating to text, context, and interpretation raises the issue of communally shared reading strategies in the explication of interpretive variety, thereby highlighting the importance of asking not only what a text means, but also how it means.Alexandra Bergholm is Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of World Cultures/Study of Religions, University of Helsinki. She received her PhD in Comparative Religion at the University of Helsinki in 2009. She is the co-editor with Katja Ritari of Approaches to Religion and Mythology in Celtic Studies (Newcastle, 2008). Printed Pages: 212. 113813

Who was the man in the iron mask? Why did he wear a mask? Why was he imprisoned and who imprisoned him? Nobody knows. His identity was a mystery when he lived and more than two and a half centuries later, he is still shrouded in mystery. Johdatus Hegelin Lukemiseen
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2012; 9525169855; New;
Alexandre Kojève (1902–1968) esitteli vaikutusvaltaisen Hegel-tulkintansa vuosina 1933–1939 pitämillään luennoilla, joille osallistuivat muiden muassa Georges Bataille, Jacques Lacan ja Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Laajan yleisön tulkinta saavutti vasta vuonna 1947, kun kirjailija Raymond Queneaun luentomuistiinpanot julkaistiin Kojèven tarkastamana ja täydentämänä kirjana. Johdatuksessa Hegelin lukemiseen Kojève käy Hegelin Hengen fenomenologian järjestelmällisesti läpi ja kääntää samalla Hegelin raskaan terminologian kevyemmälle, konkreettisemmalle kielelle. The Fight for Influence: Russia in Central Asia
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649211; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Since attaining independence, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan have forged their own paths—building relationships with outside powers and throwing off the last vestiges of Soviet domination. But in many ways, Moscow still sees Central Asia through the lens of the Soviet Union, and it struggles to redefine Russian relations with the region. Alexey Malashenko offers a comprehensive analysis of Russian policies and prospects in Central Asia. It is clear that Russian policy in the former Soviet space is entering uncharted territory. But does the ruling establishment understand the fundamental shifts under way? It is time for Moscow to rethink its approach to Central Asia.Printed Pages: 308. 105044

Politics From Below: Essays on Subalternity and Resistance in India
Aakar Books; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789350025000; Hardcover; New; New;
How is subalternity constituted and contested in Indian society? This is the question at the centre of this collection of essays, which draws on Antonio Gramsci's work to investigate the dynamics of hegemony, subalternity and resistance in India, both past and present. Engaging in a critical dialogue with the Subaltern Studies project, the first part of Politics From Below develops a historical-sociological approach to the study of hegemonic processes and subaltern politics. At the heart of this perspective is a concernwith deciphering the enablements and constraints that subaltern groups confront as they mobilize in and through the social condensations of hegemony - and in particular in and through regnant state-society relations. In the second part of the book, this perspective is put to work in developing analyses of social movements in rural India. Drawing on the author's extensive fieldwork, Politics From Below presents detailed ehtnographic studies of the movement against dam building in the Narmada Valley and Adivasi mobilization to democratize the local state in western India. The book will be relevant to students and scholars with an interest in social movements and the political economy of development and democracy in India, as well as to activists and engaged members of the public more generally. 117873

The Ritual of Battle: Krsna in the Mahabharata
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8120840348; Softcover; New;
This book is a study of India’s great epic, the Mahabharrata, against the background of Indo-European myth, epic, and ritual. It builds upon the pioneering studies in these areas by Georges Dumezil and Stig Wikander to work toward the goal of understanding how this epic’s Indo-European heritage is interpreted and reshaped within the setting of bhakti or devotion-al Hinduism. The book begins with a comparative typology of traditional classical ep-ics, arguing that epic is a distinctive mythical genre, and that the Maha-bharrata in particular should be studied as part of an Indo-European epic (and not just mythical) continuum. The reshaping of Indo-European theme is then examined in relation to the Mahabharrata’s central mystery : the figure of Krsna, hero and ally of the Pandava brothers in their struggles against their cousins, the Kauravas, and incarnation of Visnu. The study argues that Krsna figures in the epic at the center of a coher-ent theological ensemble that builds upon continuities in Indo-European, Vedic, and particularly Brahmanic sacrificial idioms. Ultimately, Krsna guides the forces of dharma or righteousness through a great ”sacrifice of battle” whose eschatological background recalls Indo-European and Vedic themes, while projecting them into the Hindu bhakti cosmology of universal dissolutions, recreations, and divine grace. The study vigorously opposes attempts to ”explain” Krsna by arbitrary theories of the Mahabharrata’s growth through interpolations. Printed Pages: 368. 117856

History of Anthropology
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351252634; Hardcover; New; New;
Haddon’s History of Anthropology (1910) has been the first effort of this kind to give an outline of the developments in the discipline up to that period. The 1934 edition, which has been followed here was completely revised by Haddon. For Haddon, the scope of anthropology is spread in three major subdivisions: Human Biology, Cultural Anthropology (Ethnology) and Ethnography. This book has these three main sections which are again distributed into altogether nine chapters. The sections or parts deal with nature and definition of anthropology, voyagers and philosophers, professionalization and history from within the discipline. This celebrated and pioneering work of anthropology is being published for greater readership of the present generations to keep them abreast of the very foundational ideas in the discipline of anthropology. The book brings before us many of the information that are useful even today. Printed Pages: 145. 112358

Globalization and the American Century
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2003; 0521009065; Paperback; New;
Using globalization as a unifying theme, Eckes and Zeiler offer a bold new approach to American history and diplomacy in the twentieth century. The American Century of global leadership, they show, resulted both from innovations and ideas. Revolutionary improvements in technology (especially satellite communications and jet transportation) combined with the leadership elite’s enthusiasm for de-regulation of markets and free trade to fuel American-style globalization. Zeiler and Eckes show this formula helped the nation rise to economic power after the Spanish-American War, and win both world wars and the Cold War. In the decade after the end of the Cold War, America’s power and cultural influence soared as business and financial interests pursued the long-term quest for global markets. But the tragic events of September 2001 and the growing volatility of global finance raised questions about whether the era of American-led globalization was sustainable, or vulnerable to catastrophic collapse. Contents 1. Americanizing Britain’s world, 1898–1913; 2. Globalization in war and peace, 1914–1920; 3. Exporting the American dream, 1921–1929; 4. Business busted, diplomacy destroyed, 1929–1939; 5.
