The Bhumij Revolt 1332-33: Ganga Narain's Hangama or Turmoil
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1967; 8121503531; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This is a study of the Bhumij Revolt of 1832-33 (Ganga Narain's Hangama or Turmoil) in the Jungle Mahals or Dhalbhum in the Midnapur district of the Bengal presidency with particular emphasis on the causes and social implications of this movement. It takes note of the evil consequences of introducing into an undeveloped tribal area the complex regulation-bound Cornwallis system. The political, social and economic impact upon the Bhumijes of that system forms the central theme of this book. The British administration and the detribalization of the tribal chiefs led to a general discontent, which combined with the personal grievances of a gifted leader, Ganga Narain Singh, produced this strong, the simple-minded and ill-informed against the concerted resources of a powerful system." The book is based upon research in public records preserved in the archives in Patna, Calcutta and London, and the private papers of Bentinck in the University of Nottingham; for the sake of an independent and critical study, contemporary newspapers and magazines have been used. Defining religion in the context of Arunachal Pradesh has always been a challenge. A comprehensive analysis of this evidence establishes the presence of Hindu religious elements in ancient Arunachal Pradesh.Dr. Jagdish Kaur is a medical professional educated at Delhi University and is a postgraduate in public health. Driven: Memoirs of a Civil Servant-turned-Entrepreneur
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2013; 0670083143; Softcover; New;
Jagdish Khattar has had an astonishingly diverse career, a trained lawyer who became an IAS officer. He was an agent of change in Uttar Pradesh through his roles as district magistrate, and head of the cement and transport corporations. He also helmed India’s Tea Board in London and played a key role in the steel ministry. Elevated to the post of MD with Maruti Udyog, a firm that was on the verge of a steep decline, Khattar braved labour unions, foreign competition, and politicians as he led Maruti to a very successful IPO. Finally, at the age of 65 Khattar turned entrepreneur with Carnation, India’s first multi-brand car sales and servicing network.Driven spreads across a sweeping national canvas from drought-hit villages to the Shakespearean intrigues of politicians and bureaucrats. It has insights into the complicated relationship with the Japanese. Written with flair and liberally peppered with frank anecdotes, it is filled with lessons about leadership, friendships, jugaad-style innovation, resilience, and values.Printed Pages: 352. 103441

Deccani Scroll Paintings in the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art
Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art; Hyderabad; 2014; 8190487256; Fifth Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book Deccani Scroll Paintings is the first comprehensive study of all aspects of a unique tradition of narrative scroll paintings in India. These scrolls have been used for over four hundred years in the north-western region of the present Andhra Pradesh state by Telugu-speaking itinerant picture-showmen belonging to a community entitled to perform before people of certain caste. The book provides hitherto unknown material to scholars about the artists, the picture-showmen, their patron-caste, viewers, performance, stylistic development, influence of the Vijayanagara and Nayaka-period painting on them, technique and material used for painting, and, most importantly, the caste-based legends performed before certain patron-caste people, which, so far were not available to others. This book also surveys historical facts and social conventions prevailing in this part of the Deccan when these works were produced. Although the Deccani scrolls are superior in many respects, when compared to scrolls produced elsewhere in India like, Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka, and the study about the latter began in the early 1900s, the Deccani scrolls came to the notice of art lovers only after 1965. The scrolls published in this book are the best among examples so far known. The earliest is a rare work of c. 1625; the others were produced between c. 1775 and c. 1900. Great pain was taken to photograph details of these very large-sized works, each about 30 inches wide and over 30 feet long. This book will inspire art scholars and institutions to undertake further research and record additional information about narrative-scrolls tradition of the Deccan for the benefit of scholars and art lovers. Individuals and Ideas in Traditional India: Ten Interpretive Studies
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8121510481; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This volume presents new perspectives from the Humanities and Social Sciences on some of the most important and enduring "individuals" and "ideas" in pre-modern India. It is hoped that they will prove of interest and some valued to the general reader, as well as to the scholar, and will encourage them to pursue these topics further with the aid of notes, references, and bibliographies. The power of ideas and significance of those who give expression to them is neither overlooked nor minimized by good students of history. However, different kinds of ideas and individuals seem to emerge to the fore in different cultural traditions. These differ as do their preferences. One has to study each culture within its own context in order to appreciate and understand it fully. The present volume is devoted to such a study of traditional India. It includes ten contributions by as many scholars. It treats of "individuals" such as Visvamitra, Bhrgu, the Buddha, Carvaka, the only female Jina Malli of the Jainas, Bidpai, Caitanya, Swami Dayananda, Mahatma Gandhi, and Swami Bhaktivedanta, to mention only the main figures. "Ideas" such as dissent, the miraculous, being superhuman, chastity, sati, spirit possession, ahimsa, asceticism, and bhakti are of perennial interest to those interested in India and its diverse cultural historical experiences. Shakespeare's Impact on Hindi Literature
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1970; 8121504295; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Shakespeare and the language and literature of which he was the proudest 'fashioner' have acted not as a damper on, as some people would have us believe, but as a source of constant stimulus and impetus to almost all the languages and literatures of India. The impact of the great 'bard' on Hindi literature has no doubt been part of the wider contact the latter has had with the letters and culture of the west for over a century, but coming, as it did, in the formative stage of modern Hindi language and literature, it has perhaps been most outstanding and considerable. The study of Shakespeare's plays provided an incentive to Hindi drama-which has been the principal sphere of his influence-to come into its own through a series of imitative writings leading upto inspired original works, and helped the Hindi stage to pass from the crude farcical theatre of the folk tradition to a more respectable stage with proper dramatic effects. The poet in Shakespeare too, as revealed more in the plays than in the poems, stimulated the romantic and imaginative sensibilities of Hindi Poets to find expression in new lyrical forms with a new language and idiom to match. As a matter of fact, Shakespeare's influence on Hindi writers-mostly dramatists and poets-has been so pervasive and profound that although at times its presence is felt in the form of an echo or in the twist of a phrase, it defies analysis. Dr. J.P. Mishra's work is an exhaustive and critical study of all Shakespearean impact on Hindi literature for the first time. The work of immense interest to students of English and Hindi literatures; it has also a broader significance for scholars of the social and cultural history of the Indian people. Dr. Mishra's book is of great value not merely as a study in comparative literature but also as a significant contribution to the wider question of Indo-British cultural relations. Agrarian System of Medieval Assam
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8170229677; Hardcover; New; New;
The work Agrarian System of Medieval Assam is a representative history of the agrarian life in the North-East in the period from the 13th to early 19th century the period of the Ahom rule in the Brahmaputra valley. Although major emphasis has been given to the study of the agrarian life in Assam, the work at the same time throws light on the agrarian system of the entire tribal set-up in the region. The period chosen by the author being the most significant one in the history of the North-Eastern region so far social formations and detribalisation in are concerned, the present study is, in a sense, a history of detribalisation and socio-political formations in the valley. The work explains in various aspects the role of the Ahoms as well as other tribes, such as the Koches, in the process. Divided into seven chapters including an introductory and a concluding chapters, the work deals with the land systems in the plains and the hills, gradual transformation of the natural jungle area into vast cultivable fields, land distribution and land relations, cultivation and its extent and methods, production and production administration, distributions, nature and extent of trade, social stratifications and social life in the period of the six hundred years particularly the life styles of those who produced. It deals with the courses of changes in the life styles of the various ethnic groups under a unified political system; and explains as to how breakdown of the early tribal life led to the growth of a caste based feudal society in Assam and its neighbouring regions. Having advantage of going through almost all the sources in original/primary form, the author has justified her findings with abundance of materials some of which she has presented in a well-documented and neatly planned Appendices and in a long bibliography. With all very careful presentation of facts and intelligent and critical dealing with the subject, the Agrarian System of Medieval Assam is a valuable addition to the present knowledge of the pre-colonial history of the north-eastern part of India. Frontier in Flames: North East India in Turmoil
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0670081175; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 Cms x 23.5 Cms
Even after sixty years of independence, integration with the rest of India has eluded the eight states of the North East riven by insurgencies and secessionist struggles. What are the conflicts that inflame the North East frontiers of India? Does the Indian government understand the complexity of the forces that impair the region? Is it aware of the North East’s feeling of alienation from the rest of India? What are the shortfalls in security in this region laid waste by relentless violence? In its quest to zealously guard the nation’s frontiers, has New Delhi unconscionably ignored concerns of development? In this collection, eleven specialist commentators on the North East critically examine aspects of security in the region. Frontier in Flames is a definitive departure from the existing debates on this topic in its censure of the Indian government’s policy towards the region. In their analyses, while agreeing on the principal reasons why the land of the seven sisters continues to burn, the writers suggest strong remedial measures to establish peace and prosperity in the region. Terrorism: Patterns of Internationalization
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299518; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Terrorism: Patterns of Internationalization provides a systematic analysis of the concepts of internationalization of terrorism. It looks into the stages and processes through which terrorism has spread in various parts of the world and binds together the facts to present a comprehensive picture of the distinguishing features that characterize the internationalization of terrorism—from local to global. Through 11 well-researched chapters, leading experts on terrorism from across five continents express their views and analyze the main patterns, stages, and levels of internationalization of different types of terrorism in a broad cross-regional perspective. The book challenges a number of conventional patterns of analysis and underlines the importance of visualizing terrorism as an act driven by political motivation, notwithstanding the fact that it is manifested through ideological or religious sentiments. It also analyzes the various tactics used by different terrorist organizations in different regions and distinguishes terrorists from other non-state actors. It dwells on the dangerous implications of the internationalization of terrorism and emphasizes the need to develop a research methodology which can help understand the current conceptualization of the phenomenon and bring forward analytical solutions. This will be an important sourcebook for the military, the police, law enforcement agencies, and government training institutes. In addition, it will also benefit political analysts and professionals such as counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism experts. Printed Pages: 316. 028350

Recollections of the Se La Bomdila Debacle 1962
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904367; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Commemorating 50 years of the India-China War of 1962, this is a factual account by the author, who was Brigade Major of 62 Infantry Brigade. He is the only person, apart from late Brigadier Hoshiar Singh, Commander 62 Infantry Brigade, who was privy to all developments and key decisions that led to the ithdrawal of the Brigade from Se La. The debacle resulted in the tragic deaths of almost 1000 personnel, most of whom never got the opportunity to fight the enemy. Two chapters in the book, after selective translation, have been gleaned from two authoritative Chinese books. These portray the meticulous strategy, timing,determination and speed, by which the Chinese reached Chakoo the gateway to Assam in two days!It shows how, in sharp contrast, the Indian Army was deployed in great haste with ill conceived plans, units woefully equipped and not acclimatized to high altitude terrains having trained for different roles and locations.Even after the Namka Chu debacle (south of Thagla Ridge), the Indian Political leaders in Delhi and the Army brass, failed to read the Chinese intentions to encroach further into Indian Territory, which brought great humiliation to the Indian Army.Awards to both Indian and Chinese soldiers have been narrated in some detail, as well as lessons learnt for the future and for military.Printed Pages: 188. 104324

Spanda-Karikas: The Divine Creative Pulsation
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120808169; Ninth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The Spandakarikas are a number of verses that serve as a sort of commentary on the Siva-sutras. According to Saivagama, the divine consciousness is not simply cold, inert intellection. It is rather spanda, active, dynamic, throbbing with life, creative pulsation. In Siva-sutras, it is the prakasa aspect of the divine that is emphasized; in Spandakarikas, it is the vimarsa aspect that is emphasized. Together, these two books give us integral view of Saiva philosophy. Ksemaraja has written a commentary on Spandakarikas, titled Spanda-nirnaya. He is fond of sesquipedalian compounds, long and windy sentences, but he is very profound in the comprehension of the subject and so cannot be ignored. The author tried to provide a readable translation of both the karikas and the Spanda-nirnaya commentary. Each karika (verse) is given both in Devanagari and Roman script, followed by its translation in English. This is followed by Ksemaraja's commentary in Sanskrit. Then follows an English translation of the commentary. After this, copious notes are added on important and technical words. Finally, a running exposition of each karika in author's own words is given.Printed Pages: 233. 102325

Embodied Vision: Interpreting the Architecture of Fatehpur Sikri
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098484; Hardcover; New; New;
Departing from the conventional path of describing and explaining the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri, Professor Jaimini Mehta delves into a series of representations the Mughal city has been subjected to and concludes that there is an inexorable tension at its core embodied in the constantly shifting axes, complex rhythms, raising or lowering of the ground planes, juxtapositions of mythical symbols and the conflicting pulls of traditions and human will. The space of Fatehpur Sikri is revealed to us through perception more than through geometry.Professor Mehta’s unconventional interpretation of the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri emanates from his exploration of the history of architectural representation and leads him to conclude that the tools of designing, representation and analysis, i.e. various kinds of drawings, which we normally use today, did not exist in sixteenth-century India when Fatehpur Sikri was built. These drawings, which assume our “mind’s eye” hovering above the city and taking in the whole of reality at once, have failed to represent the existential lived experience of inhabitation of architecture.Printed Pages: 160 with 71 colour & 36 b/w illustrations. 106508

Rethinking Modernity: Towards Post Rational Architecture
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8189738720; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 24 Cm
Has the project to usher in Modernity run its full course and is now ready to be replaced by something called Post-Modern? Re-examining the very idea of Modernity in architecture, and drawing from a number of diverse sources such as philosophy, social science, art and technology, Prof. Mehta argues that the normal historical progression of architectural thought and production suffered an epistemological break in mid-18th century, caused by the separation between architecture and engineering and resulted in increasing rationalization of architecture. Critical writings of several post-Renaissance scholars and academicians aided this process. Prof. Mehta refers to this as “Academic Architecture”. While the pre-Renaissance scholars were content to codify the practice of architecture, the new writings actively sought to construct an identity of architecture to align it with modern science and industry. The overwhelming need to validate architecture from the logico-mathematical perspective favored the cerebral over the existential qualities of architecture. Prof. Mehta asserts that alternatives to the rationalist and positivist narratives always existed in the West and also in several non-Western cultures but the very strong “foregrounding” of Rationalism confined them to the academia. His insightful analysis indicates that the contours of Post Rational architecture are already visible in the works of several contemporary architects. There are also some ancient and modern mss. of the commentaries. Taking the text of Nyayapravesa-kavrttipanjika of venerable sage Shri Punyavijayji, as the basis, this has been critically edited in a systematic way. The text of Nyayapravesakasastra, was translated into the Bhota language of Tibet and into Chinese language many years ago. Besides, this text has also been translated independently from Chinese language into Bhota language. Pandit Vidhushekhara Bhattacharya, in 1927, published its Tibetan translation in the Roman script. This translation might be extremely useful for the scholars of Tibetan language. Therefore, it has been included as the fifth appendix of this publication in original Tibetan script.Printed Pages: 161. 102451

Yaugika Siddhiyan: Ek Vivecanatmaka Adhyayana

India is invariably the homeland for Yoga being entrusted to the offsprings of Rishis-Maharshis of the olden times. Yoga is for the physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual development of a human being. At one end the attainment of salvation through one's spiritual awakening and knowledge of the eternal truth is considered as the essence of yoga, on the other an efficient yogi can attain the special mystical powers through yoga sadhana. All this has been illustrated in the book Patanjaliyogadarshana of Maharshi Patanjali. The attainment of mystical powers should not be the prime object of yogic exercises, but most of the practitioners adhere to them to attain para-natural powers only. Though it is impossible in today's scientific age to easily believe in these mystical powers, this book majestically proves citing various examples, that these superhuman powers are not mere illusions but can be assimilated and achieved easily even in the materialistic world of today. These powers can be accomplished by practising the specifically prescribed path of the yogic philosophy. Such powers, when achieved should not make a person self-indulgent, but these should be used for the public welfare only.This book, undoubtedly, will be beneficial not only for those who specialize in yoga but also for a layman.Printed Pages: 247. 100471

Linearization of Chains and Sideward Movement
The MIT Press; Cambridge, Massachussets, USA; 2004; 0262140853; First Edition; Paperback; New; 6 x 9 Inches
This highly original monograph treats movement operations within the Minimalist Program. Jairo Nunes argues that traces are not grammatical primitives and that their properties follow from deeper features of the system, and, in particular, that the phonetic realization of traces is determined by linearization computations coupled with economy conditions regarding deletion. He proposes a version of the copy theory of movement according to which movement must be construed as a description of the interaction of the independent operations Copy, Merge, Form Chain, and Chain Reduction. Empirical evidence to support this claim includes instances of "sideward movement" between subtrees in a derivation. According to this analysis, the linearization of chains in the phonological component constrains sideward movement so that it is possible to account for standard properties of multiple gap constructions, including parasitic gap and ATB constructions, without construction-specific operations or principles that are not independently motivated. Theoretical linguists will find Linearization of Chains and Sideward Movement of great interest both theoretically and empirically. The version of the copy theory of movement proposed by Nunes will stir debate and shape future research in the field. Printed Pages: 224. 003198

When thirteen-year-old Manikarnika leaves her father’s court-in-exile to marry the king of Jhansi, little does she realize the burden of greatness awaiting her. As she grows from a headstrong and spirited girl into a young woman wise beyond her years, learning to put aside personal disappointments and desires to emerge as a capable queen beloved of her people, she watches the political landscape around her shift and change chillingly under the control of the powerful East India Company. When the British annex Jhansi after the tragic deaths of her infant son and husband, Rani Lakshmibai turns for help to Robert Ellis, an officer in the East India Company and Jhansi’s political agent. But as war clouds gather and they find themselves ranged on either side of an impassable divide, his attempts to assist her, while staying loyal to his own government, are as destined to falter as is their increasing emotional attachment. Doomed love becomes a dramatic and unforgettable metaphor for Empire even as Lord Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse is all set to alter forever the contours of not only their lives but also the land they have both come to love. While Ellis is sent away in disgrace, Lakshmibai, in the company of her comrades-inarms and childhood playmates Tantia Tope and Nanasahib,isinexorably drawn into the vortex of the Great Mutiny of 1857, with catastrophic consequences. There is always, if not exactly a ‘happily ever after’, at least an ‘afterwards’ to every story … When Rahul Tiwari arrives in Kerala for a short break from London, he has no premonition of a life-changing moment. But one glance over the fence at his lovely but reticent neighbour Maya is enough to launch him on a path of no return. He finds himself playing friend, partner, co-conspirator, and finally the entirely unexpected role of saviour as Maya, suffocating under the weight of a loveless marriage and a suspicious husband, turns to him for help. Together, they flee India with Maya’s one-year-old daughter Anjali and life seems to hold all the promise of a new beginning, until destiny strikes … With characteristic ease and insight, Jaishree Misra writes in her new novel of the transforming power of love and of the joy and heartbreak of giving yourself to another, for better or for worse. 000980
