Christian Missions in Bihar and Jharkhand till 1947: A Study by P. C. Horo
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480389; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Christianity in India is nearly two millennia old. Along with Hinduism and other prominent minority religions such as Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, it has become a part of the religious heritage of India, which is known for its religiosity and religious diversity. Therefore, the History of Christianity in India is a part of the History of this land. So also, the History of the Christian community is an aspect of the general history of the people of this country.This book deals with the History of Christianity in Bihar and Jharkhand till the year of Indian Independence, in 1947, based on a detailed description of Christian Missions established by different Missionary Organizations during the period. It is a Mission-oriented History with focus on the missionaries. This scholarly study highlights the benign presence of hundreds of dedicated missionaries and their heroic work among the poor, the marginalized and the sick wherever they operated, effecting significant transformation in the Christian community in particular, and the wider ambient society, in general.This book is the fulfillment of a dream of Prof. Prem Chand Horo, to publish his thesis in book form, highlighting the contribution of the Christian Missions toward nation building. The efforts of Dr. Fr. Jose Kalapura further adds to the scholarly contents by his able editing, checking the facts and rectifying any methodological drawbacks, without altering the content of the research, besides adding an informative Appendix on the Missions and a suitable Introduction giving an overview, thus making it relevant, readable for students, researchers and general readers alike.Printed Pages: 338. 106404

Baroque India: The Neo-Romen Religious Architecture of South Asia: A Global Stylistic Survey
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8173051615; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
"Baroque India is the fruit of over 40 years of research, and is the work of one professionally trained in the history of Indian art (Hindu, Buddhist and Jain). In addition, he is the author of a survey of Islamic architecture world-wide, which includes, of course, the Indo-Islamic traditions. It is his belief that Indian Baroque--or, more correctly, Indian Neo-Roman--cannot be properly appreciated without an understanding of the architectural styles that preceded it on the subcontinent, and which exercised a significant impact on it. To produce the book the author not only visited the various sites which contain the monuments of Indian Neo-Roman, but has travelled as an architectural pilgrim over much of the Neo-Roman world, in Europe and the Americas. He has also familiarized himself with the art-historical theories on the various styles of architecture, in particular, the Neo-Roman. He has thus prepared himself to contemplate Baroque India's contribution against the Neo-Roman background. In consequence, the method adopted in this book has been that of summarily describing the distinctive spatial modalities of the various Neo-Roman styles, as reflected in their major monuments, especially the styles which impacted on India: a method that facilitates the discernment of the specific Indian contribution to Neo-Roman taken as a whole. In so doing, the author has tried to outline a consistent aesthetic theory of Neo-Roman, to portray its five major modes--Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism--as expressions of the Neo-Roman essence, immanently developing, in the indicated sequence, one from the other, and pullulating a rich variety of spatial themes that both display a marked originality and manifest a capacity for assimilating the spatial nuances of the other architectural styles. This theory, he believes, has enabled him to distinguish the originality of Indian Neo-Roman, and describe what it has absorbed from the subcontinent's Indian and Indo-Islamic styles, while integrating the absorbed material into its Neo-Roman substance."Printed Pages: 518 with 67 figures & 217 halftone illustrations. 100171

Song of Goa: Mandos of Yearning
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8173051666; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Konkani song, or which Goan song is a preeminent branch, is a treasury of the traditional music of the Indian subcontinent, containing as many as 34 identifiable types of song. They include the monophonic and harmonic varieties, the former in existence before the Portuguese brought western music into India, and the latter, consequent on the western impact. It was in Goa that Indian musicians first began to compose in western musical forms, incorporating into them motifs and nuances of their own immemorial tradition. "Among the 34 types figures the Mando, a dance song typically consisting of quatrains, frequently having appended choruses, set in six-four time. Its main themes are love and events (fobro), the latter social and political in nature. But its favorite theme is love, oriented toward marriage, where the lover yearns for union with his beloved, achieves that union, or laments at his failure to realize it. The love Mandos are thus of three types: yearning (utrike, the theme of this book), union (ekvott) and lamentation (villap). The melody of the Mando is uniformly melancholic, but it scintillates with luminous imagery, as of suns, stars, flowers and diamonds. The Mando evidently originated in the 1830s, but its period of high achievement extends from around 1870 to 1950. It was given expression to by numerous composers, of which four are particularly remarkable: Paulo Milagres Silva (1855-1931), Arnaldo de Menezes (1863-1917), Gizelino Rebelo (1875-1931) and Torquato de Figueiredo (1876-1948). As a dance the Mando, India's ballo nobile, was the last aristocratic social dance created anywhere."Goans not only initiated the westernization of Indian music, but from the late 19th century, also pioneered in Indian ethnomusicology, providing a model for the preservation and interpretation of the rich folk music of India. The present work aspires to represent that model. Printed Pages: 244. 100278

Folk Songs of Goa: Mando-Dulpods and Deknnis (Song of Goa, no.3)
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8173052808; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Konkani Song, of which Goan Song is the preeminent branch, is a treasury of the traditional music of the Indian subcontinent. It has at least 35 types, monophonic and harmonic, the former prevalent before the Portuguese brought Western music into India, and the latter, consequent to the Western impact. It was in Goa that Indian musicians first began to compose in Western musical forms, incorporating into them motifs and nuances of their own immemorial tradition. Among these 35 types four were created to accompany social dancing: the Mando, the Mando-dulpod, the Dulpod, and the Deknni. The Mando, the finest creation of Goan Song, is a slow verse-and-refrain composition, in six-four time, dealing with love, tragedy and contemporary events, both social and political. Aryan Books International has published two volumes on the Mando, entitled, Song of Goa, vol. 1: Mandos of Yearning (2000); and vol. 2: Mandos of Union and Lamentation (2003).While the Mando is an art song, the remaining three types represent Goan folk song. The Mando-dulpod is a slower variety of the Dulpod (or a quicker sort of Mando), also in six-four time, facilitating the transition from the slow rhythm of the Mando to the quicker one of the Dulpod. The Dulpod itself, in six-eight time, is typically descriptive of everyday life in traditional Goa, particularly that of the Christians. The Deknni ("song of the Deccan" ?) is a song imitating Hindu music in the musical idiom current among the Christians, in two-four or six-eight time, descriptive mostly of Hindu life, with special attention given to the temple dancers. The present volume contains examples of the Mando-dulpod and the Deknni. Hopefully a future volume will be devoted to the Dulpod.Printed Page: 112. 100280

Cholamandal: An Artists' Village
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0195669886; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
'This book, the work of many hands in keeping with the diversity and collegiality that characterized the Paniker-led response [to contemporary art], tells the fascinating and moving story of how artistic freedom and independence were aspired for and won along a path strewn with obstacles. It is part elegy, part scholarship, part informed journalism.' -- N Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu 'Today Cholamandal, named after an ancient dynasty that encouraged the arts, is India's largest self-supporting art colony and one of the most successful in Asia. Twenty-one of the original forty artists remain. "They are the enlightenment of contemporary art in India", said Santhanaraj, a prominent painter who spent several days there. They have combined Western and Eastern influences and generated a cycle of interest in contemporary art.' -- Stephen Kinzer, The New York Times This is the story of Cholamandal, which began in 1966 as an artists' village situated on a ten-acre p lo t on the Coromandel Coast near Chennai. It offered a place where artists could live, create, and share their art with others within the community. At Cholamandal, the creative artist is an equal participant in society, self-employed and independent. This book profiles a series of such creative artists, who have each carved a place for themselves in the world of art, some of them, internationally. Illustrated with over 130 beautiful colour plates depicting the artists' work, this is a wonderful and important document of a novel and sustainable idea, one which deserves emulation. Cholamandal was an attempt to foster a genre of art which, according to the principle of the institution in its early days, the late K.C.S. Paniker, was 'Indian in spirit and worldwide contemporary'. Towards the end of the fifties, many painters and sculptors in the Madras School of Arts and Crafts joined in the search for what amounted to a new way of life in contemporary art. The venture was an excitin g one and soon proved to be exacting as well. Thirty talented painters and sculptors acquired land to work at Cholamandal in comparative peace. There, the artist would paint or sculpt through the major part of the day, and applied himself to a congenial art craft during leisure hours, to supplement, if necessary, his income from the sale of paintings and sculptures. In the book, a biographical sketch or interview with each artist explains the motivation and technique behind the works produced at Cholamandal. These artists, some of whom live and work there even now, with a few exceptions, were once students of the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Madras. Cholamandal marked a new way of life in Indian contemporary art, and is perhaps the first of its kind anywhere in the world. This book reveals the artists who lived there, as well as the spirit behind their works, to the general reader and the connoisseur of modern Indian art. 003154

The Essential Sri Anandamayi Ma: Life and Teachings of a 20th Century Indian Saint
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 812083478X; First Edition; Softcover; New;
It is an engaging, concise, and spiritually sensitive biography of Anandamayi Ma based on both thorough research and personal contact. It provides us with an insightful interpretation of the significance of Anandamayi Ma's personality and teaching. An edited rendering of Preofessor Lipski's writings on Anandamayi Ma begins the present volume, forming the first and second chapters. No work on Anandamayi Ma would, however, be complete without the inclusion of her actual words. To that end, the third and largest chapter of the present volume provides edited selections from Ma's discourses, recorded by Brahmacari Kamal Bhattacharjee, and later translated into English by Atmananda, both close devotees. This biography by Professor Lipski along with the actual words of Anandamayi Ma creates as complete a verbal representation as is possible of a woman who was herself beyond the level of duality and thus, ultimately, beyond all description.Printed Pages: 141. 102460

Stability with Growth: Macroeconomics, Liberalization, and Development
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195688031; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
There is growing dissatisfaction with the economic policies advocated by the IMF and other international financial institutions—policies that have often resulted in stagnating growth, crises, and recessions for client countries. This book presents an alternative to ‘Washington Consensus’ neo-liberal economic polices by showing that both macroeconomic and liberalization policy must be sensitive to the particular circumstances of developing countries. It presents an alternative framework and discusses how different approaches to economic policy can better serve developing countries both in ordinary times and in times of crises. Written by leading names in the field, this book introduces the issues and the objectives of macroeconomic policy from diverse perspectives. It also presents an analysis of macroeconomic models and policy perspectives on stabilization and capital markets liberalization from conservative, Keynesian, and heterodox perspectives. 019691

Natural Kinds and Conceptual Change
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521825997; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
According to the received tradition, the language used to refer to natural kinds in scientific discourse remains stable even as theories about these kinds are refined. Hence, scientists discover, rather than stipulate, that sentences like ‘Whales are mammals, not fish’ are true. In this illuminating book, Joseph LaPorte argues that scientists do not discover that sentences about natural kinds, like ‘Whales are mammals, not fish’, are true rather than false. Instead, scientists find that these sentences were vague in the language of earlier speakers, and they refine the meanings of the relevant natural-kind terms to make the sentences true. Hence, scientists change the meanings of these terms. This conclusion prompts LaPorte to examine the consequences of this change in meaning for the issue of incommensurability and for the progress of science. • Combines a skilled treatment of philosophy of language with an unusual knowledge of the relevant biological science • Unifies many ideas discussed separately in the vast literature on natural kinds Contents Introduction; 1. What is a natural kind, and do biological taxa qualify?; 2. Natural kinds, rigidity, and essence; 3. Biological kind term reference and the discovery of essence; 4. Chemical kind term reference and the discovery of essence; 5. Linguistic change and incommensurability; 6. Meaning change, theory change and analyticity. Living Greatness
Orient Publishing/Orient Paperbacks; New Delhi, India; 8122205119; Softcover; New;
Throughout recorded human history, many insightful teachers, thinkers, and philosophers have talked about finding purpose in life and living a life filled with happiness. While many of these ideals, insights of spiritual wisdom, and higher principles are wonderful, most of them were written thousands of years ago. How can we practically integrate these ancient teachings into the complexities of our modern, everyday lives?Author and entrepreneur Joseph Law has brought together an eclectic group of teachers in this book. From billionaire business coach Bill Bartmann and international leading thinker Edward de Bono, to meditation master Mingyur Rinpoche and quantum physicist Fred Alan Wolf, and many others including the no-need-to-be-introduced Jack Canfield and John Demartini.This ground-breaking book, Living Greatness, teaches the principles of happiness from a holistic perspective, one that includes fulfilling relationships, rewarding career, spiritual growth, and finding one’s purpose in life. Written in a question-and-answer dialogue through a series of rare and insightful interviews, Living Greatness gives you private access to the ideas, thoughts, and advice of some of the greatest and the most respected living minds.As you read this book you will discover that Living Greatness is possible for all of us and cannot be measured solely by society's usual standards of success or wealth. Rather, it is demonstrated by how one's life is lived.This is what Jack Canfield, co-author of New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul, writes in the foreword of the book:Living Greatness blends the best of success and spiritual principles into a simple, easy-to-read format and compresses years of collective wisdom, knowledge, and experience into potent lessons that have powerful and immediate applications. It also offers brilliant answers to some of the most gripping questions that have ever been asked about life, happiness and success.Living Greatness contains timeless wisdom in a contemporary package for living a happier, more successful, and more fulfilling life. To live great, you will also need to build the new habits, behaviours, and belief structures that will allow you to create the life you want — and Living Greatness will show you how to do just that.Get ready for the read (and the ride) of your life!Printed Pages: 232. 106693

The Wrestler's Body: Identity and Ideology in North India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121507995; First Indian Edition; Cloth; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The Wrestler's Body tells us the story of a way of life organized in terms of physical self-development. While Indian wrestlers are competitive athletes, they are also moral reformers whose conception of self and society is fundamentally somatic. In order to elucidate the somatic structure of the wrestler's identity and ideology, Joseph Alter uses the insights of anthropology to write an ethnography of the wrestler's physique. Young men in North India may choose to join an akhara, or gymnasium, where they subject themselves to a complex program of physical fitness. Under the supervision of a guru they become wrestlers by learning how and what to eat, how, when and where to sleep, bathe, defecate, exercise, brush their teeth, and rest, what to wear, and generally how to comport themselves. By these means they not only become competent athletes, they come to develop a moral physique and to embody an ideology of public health. Alter's first-hand description of each detail of the wrestler's regimen is set within the geomoral context of the gymnasium and is framed by a series of interpretations: the place of the body in the relationship between a guru and his disciple; the meaning of patronage as a system of control and support; the embodiment of symbolic structures in the ritual of Nagapanchami; a deconstruction of the embodied self through the drama of tournament competition; and the development of a moral physique modeled on the ironic form and divine structure of Lord Hanuman's body. Wrestling provides a unique perspective on South Asian culture and society. Self-consciously outside the cultural mainstream, it cuts against the weave of the larger cultural fabric. By bringing members of high and low castes into close physical contact, wrestling challenges the principles of purity and pollution. Concepts of general health and fitness are redefined in exaggerated terms. Using the model of sannyasa, or Hindu world renunciation, wrestlers transform the disciplinary mechanisms of asceticism into the terms of somatic nationalism and utopian reform. The body of the wrestler is a focal symbol in the rubric of "ethical nationalism." Wrestlers feel that a reform of Indian national character is imperative and that moral reform on this scale can only be achieved through a discipline of the individual body. As such, wrestlers advocate their way of life as an ideology of national health. Everyone is called on to become a wrestler and build collective strength through self-discipline. Yoga in Modern India: The body Between Science and Philosophy
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178223244; Softcover; New;
Yoga has come to be an Icon of Indian culture and civilization, and it is widely regarded as being timeless and unchanging. Based on extensive ethnographic research and an analysis of both ancient and modern texts, Yoga in modern India challenges this popular view by examining the history of yoga, focusing on its emergence in modern India and its dramatically changing form and significance in the twentieth century. Joseph Alter argues that yoga’s transformation into a popular activity idolized for its health value is based on modern ideas about science and medicine.Printed Pages: 312. 102306

Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380502908; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This is an indispensable book for anyone wondering what sort of changes to expect in U.S. foreign policy should the Democrats retake the White House later this year. Nye’s careful analysis of the shortcomings of unilateralism and reliance solely on military power in confronting the threat posed by Islamic extremists is strong, all the more so because it is virtually devoid of partisanship. He gives credit to President Bush and his neoconservative advisers in their projection of “hard” military and economic power. But he shows how what he casts as their blindness to the significance of “soft” power seriously undermines hard power. Soft power—”the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than coercion”—is cultivated through relations with allies, economic assistance and cultural exchanges with other countries, projecting a sense that U.S. behavior corresponds with rhetorical support for democracy and human rights and, more generally, maintaining favorable public opinion and credibility abroad. The go-it-alone approach, Nye argues, has led to an unprecedented drop in support for the U.S. abroad, which leaves us scrambling to rebuild Iraq almost singlehandedly, overstretching ourselves militarily and economically. It also hampers efforts to secure the voluntary cooperation of foreign governments essential to dismantling terrorist cells spread throughout the globe. The answer, Nye says, lies in a return to the mix of soft and hard power that cemented the Western alliance and won the Cold War.Printed Pages: 202. 104353

Nimbarka: A Pre-Samkara Vedantin and His Philosophy
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121507944; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This work investigates a figure, Nimbarka, who is famous and yet shadowy as to his identity, his time, his authentic teachings and work. The method followed in this investigation is adequate: First, securing as basis a work whose genuineness is not controvertible, the Vedantaparijata Saurabha; second, in its light, investigates the genuineness of other works allegedly composed by Nimbarka; third examines critically all relevant traditions concerning Nimbarka and determines their value as mere legend or reliably historical documents; fourth, ascertains the kind of literary or doctrinal affinity that exists between Nimbarka and Samkara and Srinivasa; fifth, discerns the contrasts and affinities between the teachings of the Saurabha and other forms of Vaisnavism; sixth, draws the conclusion of such on historical enquiry with careful discrimination and moderation in claims of certainty and probability. The author has also provided a close analysis of the Saurabha as the solid basis of his exposition of its philosophy. It has the quality of security, being solidly grounded in a text with which the author is thoroughly familiar and which he has scrutinized in and out. Due to his talent as a Sanskritist, he has drawn all the implications of Nimbarka's expression, vocabulary and phrasing. All Vedanta scholars will be grateful to have this work in hand. 14181 Joseph Stiglitz
The Roaring Nineties: Why We're Paying the Price for the Greediest Decade in History
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0141014318; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
'A searing critique of Dubyanomics ... The Nobel laureate who took on the IMF is now turning his guns on the American President. Stiglitz knows when to pick a fight' - Observer His previous book revealed the shocking truth about globalization. Now, Joseph Stiglitz blows the whistle on the devastation wrought by the free market mantra in the nineties – and shows how Bush is ignoring the lessons from what happened. This is the explosive story of how capitalism US-style got its comeuppance: how excessive deregulation, government pandering to big business and exorbitant CEO salaries all fed the bubble that burst so dramatically amid corporate scandal and anti-globalization protest. As Chief Economic Advisor to the President at the time, Stiglitz exposes the inside story of what went wrong, but also reveals how Bush’s administration is now making things worse – much worse – for the economy, the US and the rest of the world. Stiglitz takes us one step further, showing how a more balanced approach to the market and government can lead not only to a better economy, but a better society. Printed Pages: 432. 002932

The Vaipheis: Their History and Culture
Akansha Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8183702090; Hardcover; New; New;
No tomes, travelogues, official or non-official files, and any single foreign accounts has yet briefed or detailed about the Vaiphei people satisfactorily. The obvious reason for this are, first written Material is dearth, and second, legends, culture, and History being preserved orally. This work is intended to bring out to light and bring home the rich and valuable historical aspects of the Vaipheis which are now neglected and allowed to slip into oblivion by sophisticated and self-sufficient younger generation. Perhaps, this work will be the first of its kind. This work has been methodically organized under thirteen chapters. The First to the fourth Chapters are an attempt to clarify the racial origin of Vaiphei and its contiguous tribes. The fifth chapter deals with how the appellation "VAIPHEI" have been acquired. The sixth chapter gives A Clear Picture about the Vaiphei racial origin. Chapter seven of this Study mainly deals with the journey and settlements of Suantak descendants from the time they are identified as "Vaiphei". The eighth chapter deals with the socio-political system of Vaipheis which have been practiced since time immemorial. Chapter nine deals with different aspects of Vaipheis economic and Domestic life in its traditional forms. In the tenth chapter we find that their customary Laws were unwritten yet they were as much rigid as coded laws of modern time. Chapter eleventh of this study gives an exhaustive assessment of Vaipheis` primal religion. When and how the Vaipheis were undone and released from their superstitious, mumbo-jumbo, and pow-wow life is detailed in chapter twelve. The concluding as well as the thirteenth chapter deals with the observation and remarks on major findings of this study. 110160

Nagarjuna in Context: Mahayana Buddhism and Early Indian Culture
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120832604; Hardcover; New; New;
Nagarjuna, one of India's greatest philosophers, is the most influential thinker in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. While his philosophy has been the subject of numerous studies and translations, Joseph Walser provides the first examination of Nagarjuna's life and writings within the social, religious, and institutional contexts of the early history of Buddhism. Walser locates Nagarjuna's second century writings at a critical juncture in the development and spread of Mahayana Buddhism. At this time, Mahayanist writings and teachings were regarded with great suspicion, and its followers were subject to legal censure. Walser explores how Nagarjuna's writings, including his most famous works, The Jeweled Garland and Foundational Stanzas, established a connection between the authority of the existing Buddhist canon and Mahayana teachings. In doing so, Nagarjuna was able to demonstrate the legality of Mahayana interpretation within the strictures of Buddhist monastic law. This established a place for Mahayana in the Buddhist tradition and insured the reproduction and transmission of the sect's central texts. Walser's analysis draws on close readings of Nagarjuna's texts, particularly their treatment of the "three baskets" of the Buddhist canon: Vinaya (Buddhist monastic law), Sutra (the sermons of the Buddha), and Abhidharma (Buddhist sectarian treatises). Walser also examines how the philosopher forged alliances with the laity and other Buddhist sects alliances that proved pivotal in insuring the survival of Mahayana teachings. In addition to his analysis of Nagarjuna's writings, Walser explores a range of Buddhist and non-Buddhist sources, as well as art historical and epigraphic evidence to offer a creative and original contribution to the understanding of Nagarjuna and the early history of Buddhism.Printed Pages: 369. 102394
