Imaging Wisdom: Seeing and Knowing in the Art of Indian Buddhism (Buddhist Tradition Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8120817931; Hardcover; New; New;
On its broadest level, this book contributes to an ongoing expansion of both the history of religions and Buddhist studies by focusing on what is a far too frequently ignored aspect of religious experience: visual images. This is a study that is intended to speak to, and be relevant for, not only those interested specifically in Buddhism, but also scholars and students in the field of religion at large who are interested in the dialectical ways abstract, abstruse and even rarified textual discourses interact with devotional practices 'on the ground'. The specific focus of this book is on the Buddhist visual practices surrounding the visual representation of a single, central concept, prajna, or wisdom, in medieval north India. Prajna, however, was not only an intellectual state and spiritual goal to which to aspire. Rather, wisdom also becomes a quality to be visually represented and ritually esponded to, and even an active presence to be venerated in much the same manner as the Buddha himself. This book explores the ways in which the production and use of artistic images involving prajna constituted a central, if not the central, component of Buddhist religious practice in Medieval India. 102369

The Syntax of Time
The MIT Press; Cambridge, Massachussets, USA; 2004; 0262572176; First Edition; Paperback; New; 18 Cms x 23 Cms
Any analysis of the syntax of time is based on a paradox: it must include a syntax-based theory of both tense construal and event construal. Yet while time is undimensional, events have a complex spatiotemporal structure that reflects their human participants. How can an event be flattened to fit into the linear time axis? Chomsky's The Minimalist Program, published in 1995, offers a way to address this problem. The studies collected in The Syntax of Time investigate whether problems concerning the construal of tense and aspect can be reduced to syntactic problems for which the basic mechanism and principles of generative grammar already provide solutions. These studies, recent work by leading international scholars in the field, offer varied perspectives on the syntax of tense and the temporal construal of events: models of tense interpretation, construal of verbal forms, temporal aspect versus lexical aspect, the relation between the event and its argument structure, and the interaction of case with aktionsart or tense construal. Advances in the theory of temporal interpretation in the sentence are also applied to the temporal interpretation of nominals. Jaqueline Guéron is Professor of English Linguistics at the Université Paris III. Jacqueline Lecarme is a researcher in the Laboratoire de Linguistique Formelle, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and Université Paris 7. Printed Pages: 760. 031397

SAS²: A Guide to Collaborative Inquiry and Social Engagement
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178298902; First Edition; Paperback; New;
SAS2: A Guide to Collaborative Inquiry and Social Engagement represents a groundbreaking international effort to support the creation and mobilization of practical, authentic knowledge for social change. The guiding principle behind SAS2 (Social Analysis Systems) is that group dialogue and social inquiry are crucial for local and global development. Social issues must be addressed socially and in a multistakeholder mode, not by private interests and experts alone, and the insights that emerge must be fully integrated into processes of knowledge production, planning, and decision-making. Part 1 outlines the concepts and skillful means needed to support multistakeholder dialogue and engagement. It also provides detailed instructions on how to integrate and ground collaborative inquiry in the projects, plans, evaluations and activities of multiple stakeholders. Part 2 presents a selection of techniques for collaborative inquiry and examples of real-life applications in South Asia and Latin America. The examples focus on a range of issues including land tenure, local economic development, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and organizational development. This book will be an invaluable resource for researchers, consultants, facilitators and activists working with people to solve problems and support inclusive inquiry and decision-making. It will also be useful to scholars and academics studying and teaching participatory action research in the social sciences. Printed Pages: 320. 028779

Vapautunut Katsoja
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2016; 9527093066; New;
Printed Pages: 149. 114236

Erimielisyys: Politiikka ja Filosofia
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2009; 9525169677; New;
Teos lähtee liikkeelle poliittisen filosofian klassikoiden kriittisestä tulkinnasta. Politiikka on Jacques Ranciéren mukaansa lähtökohtaisesti demokraattista kaikkien tasa-arvoon perustuvaa kiistelyä yhteisen aistein havaittavan maailman jakamisesta. Printed Pages: 195. 116803

Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036911; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This authentic and authoritative History of Jaipur was commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the last ruler of the erstwhile Jaipur state. The author meticulously documented the history of the Kachhwa rulers of Jaipur. He ploughed through a profusion of raw material preserved almost intact for three and a half centuries in teh Kachhwa House to present a compelling history of the Jaipur dynasty. This epoch-making and monumental work on Vedic Mathematics unfolds a new method of approach. It relates to the truth of numbers and magnitudes equally applicable to all sciences and arts. The book brings to light how great and true knowledge is born of intuition, quite different from modern Western method. The ancient Indian method and its secret techniques are examined and shown to be capable of solving various problems of mathematics. The universe we live in has a basic mathematical structure obeying the rules of mathematical measures and relations. All the subjects in mathematics--Multiplication, Division, Factorization, Equations, Calculus, Analytical Conics, etc.--are dealt with in forty chapters, vividly working out all problems, in the easiest ever method discovered so far. The volume, more a magic , is the result of intuitional visualization of fundamental mathematical truths born after eight years of highly concentrated endeavour of Jagadguru Sri Bharati Krsna Tirtha. ....Throughout the book efforts have been made to solve the problems in a short time and in short space also...one can see that the formulae given by the author from Vedas are very interesting and encourage a young mind for learning mathematics as it will not be a bugbear to him. Mapping Human Rights and Subalterns in Modern India
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351281511; Hardcover; New; New;
The book "Mapping Human Rights and Subalterns in Modern India" attempts to trace the dynamics of human rights discourse and the rights of subalterns in modem India. It critically evaluates the notion of exclusion of subalterns in modem India from the mainstream social system and the present development model. The world we live in is rapidly witnessing modernity,post modernity and globalisation and has become a global village. In contrast to this, there has also been steep rise in discrimination based on caste, class, race, gender, region, religion, ethnicity and so on.Thebook arguesthat it is not merely Indian social inequities but also globalisation and current development model have equally deprived the rights of dalits, women, tribals, minorities and so on. Therefore, the rights of marginalised sections which are enumerated in the India's Constitution are under a serious threat. The book further focusses on the plight of slum dwellers in metropolitan cities and migration of the poor from the backward regions to metropolitan cities which describes the violation of fundamental rights of subalterns in modem India. It lays emphasis on the importance of vernacular literatureand writings from the grassroots level resisting the social inequalities and against current development model. The book deals with the vitality of vernacular languages in India in the era of globalisation and their impact on subalterns.Acouple of research papers discuss the politics ofhuman rights in India and its trends and challenges. In other words, the volume raises very fundamental questions "Who's development & for whom? Who benefits and who pays the price for the development? Printed Pages: 306. 111012

To-day's neglected decisions become tomorrow's crisis. This well known expression sums up in a few words the fact that environmentalists, scientists, farmers and mankind as a whole have been warning governments throughout the world for the past fifty years about the need to give thought to the environment as a consequence of the problems involved with too many factories bellowing smoke, too many cars, trucks and buses polluting the air with the use of fossil fuels (petrol and diesel), too much urbanization and a population growth which has got out of control. It can be written that "To-day's crisis are the result of neglected decisions which have failed the biodiversity of the planet which in turn have destroyed all branches of the Environment which has left no room for a Sustainable Development, be it on land, in the seas or in the air". We are a planet in crisis. This book is a tool to return the planet to the Sustainable Development it can have only by resuming an understanding of the balance between Biodiversity and the Environment. The Challenge is there. This book promises solutions. Printed Pages: 546. 117575

The Bhumij Revolt 1332-33: Ganga Narain's Hangama or Turmoil
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1967; 8121503531; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This is a study of the Bhumij Revolt of 1832-33 (Ganga Narain's Hangama or Turmoil) in the Jungle Mahals or Dhalbhum in the Midnapur district of the Bengal presidency with particular emphasis on the causes and social implications of this movement. It takes note of the evil consequences of introducing into an undeveloped tribal area the complex regulation-bound Cornwallis system. The political, social and economic impact upon the Bhumijes of that system forms the central theme of this book. The British administration and the detribalization of the tribal chiefs led to a general discontent, which combined with the personal grievances of a gifted leader, Ganga Narain Singh, produced this strong, the simple-minded and ill-informed against the concerted resources of a powerful system." The book is based upon research in public records preserved in the archives in Patna, Calcutta and London, and the private papers of Bentinck in the University of Nottingham; for the sake of an independent and critical study, contemporary newspapers and magazines have been used. Driven: Memoirs of a Civil Servant-turned-Entrepreneur
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2013; 0670083143; Softcover; New;
Jagdish Khattar has had an astonishingly diverse career, a trained lawyer who became an IAS officer. He was an agent of change in Uttar Pradesh through his roles as district magistrate, and head of the cement and transport corporations. He also helmed India’s Tea Board in London and played a key role in the steel ministry. Elevated to the post of MD with Maruti Udyog, a firm that was on the verge of a steep decline, Khattar braved labour unions, foreign competition, and politicians as he led Maruti to a very successful IPO. Finally, at the age of 65 Khattar turned entrepreneur with Carnation, India’s first multi-brand car sales and servicing network.Driven spreads across a sweeping national canvas from drought-hit villages to the Shakespearean intrigues of politicians and bureaucrats. Deccani Scroll Paintings in the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art
Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art; Hyderabad; 2014; 8190487256; Fifth Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book Deccani Scroll Paintings is the first comprehensive study of all aspects of a unique tradition of narrative scroll paintings in India. These scrolls have been used for over four hundred years in the north-western region of the present Andhra Pradesh state by Telugu-speaking itinerant picture-showmen belonging to a community entitled to perform before people of certain caste. The book provides hitherto unknown material to scholars about the artists, the picture-showmen, their patron-caste, viewers, performance, stylistic development, influence of the Vijayanagara and Nayaka-period painting on them, technique and material used for painting, and, most importantly, the caste-based legends performed before certain patron-caste people, which, so far were not available to others. This book also surveys historical facts and social conventions prevailing in this part of the Deccan when these works were produced. Although the Deccani scrolls are superior in many respects, when compared to scrolls produced elsewhere in India like, Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka, and the study about the latter began in the early 1900s, the Deccani scrolls came to the notice of art lovers only after 1965. The scrolls published in this book are the best among examples so far known. The earliest is a rare work of c. 1625; the others were produced between c. 1775 and c. 1900. Great pain was taken to photograph details of these very large-sized works, each about 30 inches wide and over 30 feet long. This book will inspire art scholars and institutions to undertake further research and record additional information about narrative-scrolls tradition of the Deccan for the benefit of scholars and art lovers. Individuals and Ideas in Traditional India: Ten Interpretive Studies
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8121510481; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This volume presents new perspectives from the Humanities and Social Sciences on some of the most important and enduring "individuals" and "ideas" in pre-modern India. It is hoped that they will prove of interest and some valued to the general reader, as well as to the scholar, and will encourage them to pursue these topics further with the aid of notes, references, and bibliographies. The power of ideas and significance of those who give expression to them is neither overlooked nor minimized by good students of history. However, different kinds of ideas and individuals seem to emerge to the fore in different cultural traditions. These differ as do their preferences. One has to study each culture within its own context in order to appreciate and understand it fully. The present volume is devoted to such a study of traditional India. It includes ten contributions by as many scholars. It treats of "individuals" such as Visvamitra, Bhrgu, the Buddha, Carvaka, the only female Jina Malli of the Jainas, Bidpai, Caitanya, Swami Dayananda, Mahatma Gandhi, and Swami Bhaktivedanta, to mention only the main figures. "Ideas" such as dissent, the miraculous, being superhuman, chastity, sati, spirit possession, ahimsa, asceticism, and bhakti are of perennial interest to those interested in India and its diverse cultural historical experiences. Shakespeare's Impact on Hindi Literature
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1970; 8121504295; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Shakespeare and the language and literature of which he was the proudest 'fashioner' have acted not as a damper on, as some people would have us believe, but as a source of constant stimulus and impetus to almost all the languages and literatures of India. The impact of the great 'bard' on Hindi literature has no doubt been part of the wider contact the latter has had with the letters and culture of the west for over a century, but coming, as it did, in the formative stage of modern Hindi language and literature, it has perhaps been most outstanding and considerable. The study of Shakespeare's plays provided an incentive to Hindi drama-which has been the principal sphere of his influence-to come into its own through a series of imitative writings leading upto inspired original works, and helped the Hindi stage to pass from the crude farcical theatre of the folk tradition to a more respectable stage with proper dramatic effects. The poet in Shakespeare too, as revealed more in the plays than in the poems, stimulated the romantic and imaginative sensibilities of Hindi Poets to find expression in new lyrical forms with a new language and idiom to match. As a matter of fact, Shakespeare's influence on Hindi writers-mostly dramatists and poets-has been so pervasive and profound that although at times its presence is felt in the form of an echo or in the twist of a phrase, it defies analysis. Dr. J.P. Mishra's work is an exhaustive and critical study of all Shakespearean impact on Hindi literature for the first time. The work of immense interest to students of English and Hindi literatures; it has also a broader significance for scholars of the social and cultural history of the Indian people. Dr. Mishra's book is of great value not merely as a study in comparative literature but also as a significant contribution to the wider question of Indo-British cultural relations. Agrarian System of Medieval Assam
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8170229677; Hardcover; New; New;
The work Agrarian System of Medieval Assam is a representative history of the agrarian life in the North-East in the period from the 13th to early 19th century the period of the Ahom rule in the Brahmaputra valley. Although major emphasis has been given to the study of the agrarian life in Assam, the work at the same time throws light on the agrarian system of the entire tribal set-up in the region. The period chosen by the author being the most significant one in the history of the North-Eastern region so far social formations and detribalisation in are concerned, the present study is, in a sense, a history of detribalisation and socio-political formations in the valley. The work explains in various aspects the role of the Ahoms as well as other tribes, such as the Koches, in the process. Divided into seven chapters including an introductory and a concluding chapters, the work deals with the land systems in the plains and the hills, gradual transformation of the natural jungle area into vast cultivable fields, land distribution and land relations, cultivation and its extent and methods, production and production administration, distributions, nature and extent of trade, social stratifications and social life in the period of the six hundred years particularly the life styles of those who produced. It deals with the courses of changes in the life styles of the various ethnic groups under a unified political system; and explains as to how breakdown of the early tribal life led to the growth of a caste based feudal society in Assam and its neighbouring regions. Having advantage of going through almost all the sources in original/primary form, the author has justified her findings with abundance of materials some of which she has presented in a well-documented and neatly planned Appendices and in a long bibliography. With all very careful presentation of facts and intelligent and critical dealing with the subject, the Agrarian System of Medieval Assam is a valuable addition to the present knowledge of the pre-colonial history of the north-eastern part of India.
