Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy of Bombay: Partnership and Public Culture in Empire
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 0199459215; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book details the life and public career of one of India's legendary individuals—Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, the first Indian knight and baronet. Born of humble origins, he went from collecting and selling empty bottles to building a business empire through the nineteenth-century China Trade. Hailed as one of India's greatest philanthropists of the colonial era, Jejeebhoy utilized his wealth for copious charity for the people of Bombay and western India. But he was also an ambitious and canny actor within the colonial framework, whose ambitions went beyond altruistic desires to benefit society. Jejeebhoy belonged to the collaborationist class that emerged under early colonialism. This class—which also included prominent figures like Dwarkanath Tagore, the merchant prince from Bengal—served as an important medium between the imperial and Indian cultures. However, the limits of collaboration for Indians were evident—Jejeebhoy faced many bureaucratic and cultural obstacles in his encounters with the imperial order. His efforts to promote himself and indigenous capabilities bear testimony to Indian ingenuity under the colonial regime.Printed Pages: 224. 104493

Translated by Jhampa Kelsang The original Sanskrit work was probably written during the fourth century A.D. Spiritual Heritage and Cultural Symbols of India
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8172247362; Softcover; New;
This book highlights attainable spiritual virtues in modern times. To give body and force to the narrations on every topic, authentic information about experiments conducted by eminent world scientists and clairvoyants is included instead of abstract reasoning/arguments. The book will fascinate the young and the old, Indian and foreigner, Hindu and non-Hindu alike.Cultural symbols are emblems of divine and human sovereignty over temporal life. A symbol must necessarily suggest more than what it expresses. Every symbol is pragmatic like a tiny seed which proclaims its potentiality of becoming a blooming tree. A careful look at the symbols opens up a vista of knowledge and the success achieved in revealing the mysteries of Nature in Universe.Printed Pages: 192. 105384

The Lowland
Random House India; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8184003862; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Two brothers bound by tragedy. A fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past. A country torn by revolution. A love that lasts long past death. This extraordinary, emotionally riveting new novel, set in India and America, expands the scope and range of one of our most beloved storytellers: the Pulitzer Prize-winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Interpreter of Maladies and Unaccustomed Earth. Born just fifteen months apart, Subhash and Udayan Mitra are inseparable brothers, one often mistaken for the other in the Calcutta neighborhood where they grow up. But they are also opposites, with gravely different futures ahead. It is the 1960s, and Udayancharismatic and impulsivefinds himself drawn to the Naxalite movement: he will give everything, risk all, for what he believes. Subhash, the dutiful son, does not share his brothers political passion; he leaves home to pursue a life of scientific research in a quiet, coastal corner of America. But when Subhash learns what happened to his brother in the lowland outside their familys home, he comes back to India, hoping to pick up the pieces of a shattered family, and to heal the wounds Udayan left behindincluding those seared in the heart of his brothers wife. Suspenseful, sweeping, piercingly intimate, The Lowland is a masterly novel of fate and will, exile and return. Shifting among the points of view of a wide range of richly drawn characters, it is at once a page-turner and a work of great beauty and complex emotion; an engrossing family saga with very high stakes; and a story steeped in history that seamlessly spans generations and geographies. A tour de force and an instant classic, this is Jhumpa Lahiri at the height of her considerable powers. Printed Pages: 352. 037665

Unaccustomed Earth
Random House India; New Delhi, India; 2009; 818400060X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Everyone has their secrets. In her stunning new collection of stories, Jhumpa Lahiri gently lifts the veil to reveal how even the most ordinary lives have their dramas and tragedies and then, as gently, lets it fall back down again. A middle aged man discovers that the death of his wife opens up his world in unexpected ways??? his daughter worries that she will now have to look after him but finds that the tables have, in fact, turned; a housewife falls in love with a younger family friend???her child ascertains her secret many years on; a son is revulsed by his father???s second marriage to a young woman who has none of the sophistication and elegance of his mother; a sister tries to save her brother from alcoholism and finds herself rejecting him like everyone else. A young man and woman whose lives cross over the years, finally and fatedly fall in love. Unaccustomed Earth returns to the terrain???the heart of family life and the immigrant experience??? that Jhumpa Lahiri has made utterly hers, but her themes, this time around, have darkened and deepened. Poised, nuanced, deeply moving, here is a superb collection: the finest she has written yet." Printed Pages: 344. 037666

Collected Papers on the Tathagatagarbha Doctrine
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120839447; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The volume brings together a selection of the late author's previously published papers written in English (and one in German). Their subject matter relates by and large to the tathagatagarbha theory or the idea of Buddhanature, which have been the main subjects of his research over the years. In part 1 he has singled out those scriptures that use the term tathagatagarbha as their principal term and identified three scriptures-Tathagatagarbha-sutra, Anµunatvapurnatvanirdesa, and srimaladevinirdesa-as the basis for the formation of the tathagatagarbha theory. Next, he has placed the Mahayana Mahaparinirvana-sutra, which uses the term buddhadhatu for the first time as a ynonym of tathagatagarbha, and associated scriptures in a second group, while in the third group we have the Lankavatara-sutra and so on, in which the concept of tathagatagarbha is Identified with alayavijnana, the basic concept of the Vijnanavada.Printed Pages: 615. 102011

Break Your Own Rules: How to Change The Patterns of Thinking That Block Women's Paths to Power
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8126534605; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Women hold just 11 percent of the most senior-level leadership positions in U.S. Corporations-a number that hasn't changed in over 30 years. How can women break through? Break Your Own Rules distills the six faulty assumptions (or "rules") most women follow that get in the way-then delivers the correlating new rules that promise to clear that path. For example, the old rule of "Focus on Others" must be replaced by "Take Center Stage," "Hard Work Will Get You There" must yield to "Be Politically Savvy." "Play It Safe" must give way to "Play to Win." "Ask Permission" must be replaced by "Proceed Until Apprehended."Printed Pages: 640. 104568

Democratization and Women's Grassroots Movements
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8186706542; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Fall of communist regimes in Eastern Europe and of dictatorships in Latin America brought new attention to democratic movements worldwide. Most interest focused on national activities, electoral politics and the expansion of capitalist markets, and though much has been written about social movements, the connections between women’s grassroots organizations and democratization have been neglected. This book explores how these movements contribute to the expansion of public and private spaces and democratic processes. The sixteen case studies highlight women’s grassroots movements in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Eritrea, South Africa, Syria, Egypt, El Salvador, Honduras, Poland, Russia, Belgium, Ireland, Canada, the United States (Appalachia), and Australia. They reveal the connections between local political and social action and the growth of democratic processes at state, regional and global levels. The book illustrates how community-based actions, programmes and organizaions that empower women contribute to the creation of a civil society and thus enhance democracy. The Second Oxford India Illustrated Corbett
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195684281; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Second Oxford India Illustrated Corbett is another collection of Corbett’s best-loved writings complemented by gripping illustrations. Whether lovingly sketching life in a Himalayan village as in ‘The Queen of the Village’ and ‘Kunwar Singh’, or describing the dense Indian jungles and teeming wildlife of his days in Jungle Lore, or telling the story, tinged with regret, of the hunting of the beautiful Pipal Pani Tiger, the stories reflect Corbett’s involvement with India, her people and her flora and fauna. With ‘The Talla Des Man-eater’ and ‘The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag’ we enter vintage Corbett territory—tightly paced and nail-biting accounts of hunting man-eaters in the hills of Kumaon and Garhwal. The entire collection, with its rich visuals and riveting tales, will appeal to young readers, and Corbett admirers alike. However, some stories have been chosen particularly for our younger readers. ‘Robin’ is a poignant story of Corbett’s favourite hunting dog; ‘Sultana’ is an appealing tale of an Indian Robin Hood; and ‘The Muktesar Man-eater’ is a touching account of Corbett’s satisfaction at ‘having made a small portion of the earth safe for a brave little girl to walk on’. 033179

My Kumaon: Uncollected Writings
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2012; 0198082894; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Hunter, naturalist, and conservationist, Jim Corbett is famous for slaying man-eating tigers and leopards in the Kumaon region of northern India. Frequently appealed to by the government of the United Provinces during the 1920s and the 1930s for help, Corbett is known to have shot nineteen tigers and fourteen leopards - all man-eaters. Corbett was encouraged to write about his hunting experiences by Roy E. Hawkins, manager of the Indian Branch of the Oxford University Press and a personal friend. An integral part of OUP India's centenary celebrations, this volume includes Jim Corbett's unpublished writings on man-eaters, nature, and his beloved Kumaon, personal letters, articles written for newspapers and gazettes by his contemporaries, and letters exchanged between Corbett and his publisher showcasing the development of his bestselling books - all from the archives of the Oxford University Press. It highlights Corbett's engagement with the times in which he lived, his complete empathy with the people of Kumaon, his great understanding of tigers and leopards, and also the gradual development of his ideas about conservation and the need to preserve the tiger and its habitat. Chronicling the history of his bestselling books (Man-Eaters of Kumaon, The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, and My India) and supported by rare photographs and evocative line drawings, this volume reflects the evolution of his writing as well as his long relationship with the Press. Key Features Jim Corbett, bestselling author of tiger stories and well-known hunter, naturalist, and conservationist. Corbett's unpublished writings and personal letters and articles written for newspapers and gazettes by his contemporaries. Letters exchanged between Corbett and his publisher. The Second Jim Corbett Omnibus: Comprising My India, Jungle Lore, and Tree Tops
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 019562968X; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
'I am glad I did re-read the book, for few books stand up so well to the passage of time.' --David Davidar, The Hindu '... the book is a delight, with its descriptions in minute and often credible detail of the way of birds, reptiles and animals, and how to observe and interpret the sights, sounds and smells of the jungle ... We may be thankful to [Corbett] for sharing a little of it with us, and for allowing us to accompany him on his expeditions...' --Janet Rizvi, Indian Express Jim Corbett is world famous for his classic man-eater stories. However, the three volumes collected here show a very different side to this remarkable man. In My India, he describes the villages of the Kumaon Hills, and the customs and lifestyles of the people he encountered. Jungle Lore is the closest Corbett ever came to writing an autobiography, combining recollections of his earliest days with frank views on the need for conservation which were well ahead of their time. Finally, in Tree Tops, the only book Corbett set outside his beloved India, he captures the savage beauty of Kenya's wildlife as well as telling the story of the royal visit of 1952, during which Princess Elizabeth learned she was Queen. 'Part of the power of Corbett's writing lies in the ... maddening faithfulness with which he recalls and recreates the smallest details of his hunts ... The result is the kind of suspense that a professional writer ... could not easily create.'--Geoffrey C. Ward & Diane Raines Ward in Tiger-wallahs '[Corbett] has written with rich insight and deep intimacy about the wild animals of the forest ... When Man-Eaters of Kumaon was published, the book became a worldwide best-seller, was translated into a dozen languages, and even [made into] a Hollywood film.' --Ramachandra Guha in Lives in the Wilderness '...a certifiable classic ... the stories are gripping without being melodramatic ...[they] do not appear worn or dated today. Corbett was an exceptionally good writer, clear and lucid and [his] tales were ...extraordinary.' --The Hindu 'Jim Corbett as a person remains as elusive in [these]pages as the leopards and tigers he tracked down...He left a large place in his heart not only f or the denize Jim Corbett's books on man-eating tigers are not only established classics, but also almost in a separate literary category by themselves. Man-Eaters of Kumaon is the best known of Colonel Corbett's books, and contains ten fascinating stories of tracking and shooting man-eaters in the Indian Himalayas during the early years of the last century. The stories also contain incidental information on flora, fauna, and village life, making this book altogether delightful reading. Printed Pages: 228. 024468

'Beyond the tales of Corbett's quests lies an extraordinary body of accurately observed details about life in the Indian jungles ... and the behaviour of tigers...Most of his independent findings have been subsequently been borne out by scientists.'--Geoffrey C Ward & Diane Raines Ward in Tiger-wallahs '...Corbett's sharp eye for detail and his straight-forward style make the book a compulsive read.' --Sunday Mail 'Colonel Jim Corbett was a rarity -- a man of immense courage and knowledge of the wildlife he hunted, and later attempted to conserve ... He had nothing but admiration and respect for tigers, the most magnificent creature to be found in the ...jungles.' --The Hindu 'Here is ... the quintessential Corbett ... The book is a delight ... Corbett is acutely aware of the damage ... being wrought to the forests of human interference ... We are thankful to him for allowing us to accompany him ... into a realm that only a generation or two age covered much of Indi a ...' This is the last of Jim Corbett's books on his unique and thrilling hunting experiences in the Indian Himalayas. The City in Action: Bombay Struggles for Power
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195679296; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The essays brought together in this volume revisit the city of Mumbai and the many facets of its political life from the 1880s to the 2000s. It traces the metamorphosis of Mumbai from a colonial port city under foreign rule into a metropolis and the prime commercial centre in independent India. Mumbai's urban transition and its dramatic and continuing change in physical shape and urban morphology form the backdrop for these essays. The essays deal with varying themes from colonial political cultures to the highly nationalist and exclusivist Hindu politics. They highlight the urban political and socio-cultural developments of Mumbai. The topics range from power in Mumbai's mohallas, urban politics, crowd action, audiences and events, the control of prabhat pheris (patriotic songs by young people), celebrations of independence, and Congress and Right wing politics and the Bombay riots of 1993. The volume explores the structure of power within various localities of the city; how physical force and power structures patterned social hierarchies. As the title indicates, the essays discuss struggles within the city for power, self-expression, and identity formation. As a whole the essays are concerned with three themes: space, locality and identity, as they track through some of the key events of Mumbai's past. It is about the people of Mumbai and how they have viewed and expressed themselves within the city and in an extended sense made the city a distinctive identity. The essays are written in different contexts but share a common concern with the city itself as a phenomenon. 019713

Retail Strategies: Understanding Why We Shop
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8179929256; Softcover; New;
Shopping is one of the most challenging and rewarding human activities. Pooler offers a captivating exploration of the emotional and psychological dimensions of shopping.For those in retailing and marketing, this guide to the fickle consumer’s mindset offers concrete and practical advice on modern shopping behavior, along with important insights into the shopping psyche. Comprehending why people shop as they do is a daunting challenge for today’s retailer. For example, why do people shop for bargain groceries yet purchase the latest luxury-model SUV? Why do people feel justified in splurging for Christmas, birthdays, or anniversaries, but suffer guilt from over-spending at other times of the year? Is clothes-shopping all about price and practicality, or is it more about emotional reward and psychological needs? Is the excitement in the quest or the acquisition? Why is there such a thing as a morning-after urge to return among certain shoppers, while others refuse to return an item even if it’s flawed or doesn’t fit? What drives shoppers in various situations? This book answers such questions, taking an incisive look at how shopping and shoppers have changed in recent years and provides valuable insights for retailers, advertisers, marketers, and consumers.Printed Pages: 216. 105577

How much can we look inside ourselves?Wellness is today a trillion-dollar industry, but a lot of the dos and don'ts are not based on evidence. Thousands of nutritional supplements, injections, and fancy exercise regimens seem to be the fashion; as are various health foods and diets.Can we look at the facts? Can we look at the simple diets of our Stone Age ancestors for help? How does one search science for the truth about preventive medicine? Jimmy Mathew has, through his stories and anecdotes, simplified an extensive body of knowledge and attempted to decode wellness and happiness. Transnational Torture: Law, Violence, and State Power in the United States and India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125045562; Hardcover; New; New;
Transnational Torture focuses on the legal and political discourses on torture in India and the United States—two common-law based constitutional democracies—to theorize the relationship between law, violence, and state power in liberal democracies. Analyzing about one hundred landmark Supreme Court cases on torture in India and the United States, memos and popular imagery of torture, Jinee Lokaneeta compellingly demonstrates that even before recent debates on the use of torture in the war on terror, the laws of interrogation were much more ambivalent about the infliction of excess pain and suffering than most political and legal theorists have acknowledged. Rather than viewing the recent policies on interrogation as anomalous or exceptional, Lokaneeta effectively argues that efforts to accommodate excess violence—a constantly negotiated process—are long standing features of routine interrogations in both the United States and India, concluding that the infliction of excess violence is more central to democratic governing than is generally acknowledged.Printed Pages: 304. 101986

Agneya-Kona of Bharatavarsa
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606633; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The book focuses on the cultural developments of Agneya-Kona (the south-east India) and their contributions to the development of humanity, and highlights the concocted history of Bharatavarsha, especially of Agneya-Kona. The author projects many artefacts to substantiate his theory. Many archaeological findings — the pre-historic rock painting of Gudahandi, images of female figurines, along with circular discs, and nude female figurines — are cases in point. Female principle was worshipped in the Mahanadi Valley both in aniconic and iconic forms. Agneya-Kona has contributed significantly to the growth of the tantric worship. In the pre-historic rock painting of Gudahandi, there is a trace of Yoga, especially Kundalini Yoga. The book details the spiritual and yogic culture of Orissa, the formative phase of Purushottama Jagannatha culture, the impact of Narasimha culture, yoni tantra traditions of the Central Mahanadi Valley and the spiritual relationship of Kalahandi with Candipur Tara-Pitha of Birbhum. A Sumerian temple that imbibed the form of Lord Purushottama Jagannatha is in highlight, and the author makes a strong statement that the culture of the region is older than the Sumerian Civilization. The book is a source of inspiration for archaeologists and historians, who want to study more about south-east India, and students, teachers and researchers of arts and culture.Printed Pages: 276. 100382

Kama in the Land of Kamakala
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606803; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The entire Mahanadi River Valley is stated to be the land of Kamakala, Uddiyana-Pitha and erotic art. Kamakala means the art of desire; the divine Kamakala is symbolized in the shape of two circular components, the overall shape signifying the union of male and female principles. The Uddiyana-Pitha refers to sites where Lord Shiva resides in the Yogini cult that developed in this region. The volume reveals the contributions of the Mahanadi River Valley to the origin of esoteric yogic sadhanas (spiritual practice). Based on a deep study of archaeological remains which include numerous antiquities like sculptures, the book examines the origin and development of the Yogini cult in the Mahanadi River Valley, laying stress on the Yoginis’ representation of the cosmic creative forces. It delves into the evolution of the Bhairava cult, the Ganapatya Tantra in Orissa, role of Mattamayura Shaivism there, and the origin of the Purushottama Jagannatha cult. Exploring the aspects of sensuousness in art and its link to the tantric cults, it scrutinizes the development of erotic art in Orissa, examining erotic sculptures, erotic art in wood and palm-leaf manuscripts. Abundant in references to ancient texts and modern scholarly works on the subject and with numerous illustrations, this intensive work also explains numerous terms and differences between words and concepts in an attempt to present a thorough study of the subject. It is a good reference for those who are interested in the history of Orissa and various cults of worship, and students and teachers of arts and history, and researchers on Orissan culture, which is wide and varied.Printed Pages: 328 100390

The Development of Hindu Iconography
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121500699; Fifth Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 x 25 Cm
Hindu iconography reflects fully the Hindu mind in its religious and social aspects. Its study enables one to understand the mysterious India in the varied facets of her life and culture. Iconography means not merely the mechanical description and identification of an image, but also a study of the various processes, mental and social, which lead to the growth of a cult or of a particular iconic type. The present book by reputed Indian specialists views the subject of the Hindu Iconography from the evolutionary standpoint and can claim to be pioneer and authoritative work in this respect. The author has carefully marshalled all kinds of data-literary, epigraphic, numismatic, glyptic and sculptural-and presents his materials and different problems in a systematic manner so as to build up a logical and coherent picture of Hindu Iconography in its wide and varied scope. A special feature of the book lies in a discussion of early iconographic types even before the systematisation of this branch of knowledge in the ancient Hindu texts. First published in 1941, the present edition has been completely revised and enlarged so as to serve as the most authoritative guide and reference work on this interesting subject. Gangesa's Theory of Truth: Containing the Text of Gangesa's Pramanya (Jnapti) Vada
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8120806182; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is a study on Gangesa`s Pramanavada, and contains a free English translation of the Sanskrit text. This study clarifies the concept of truth in Indian philosophy, especially in the Mimamsa and the Nyaya systems and attempts a critical appraisal of the pramanya theories. Not much attention has been paid by scholars to a precise explication of the concept of truth in Indian philosophy. This work throws light on this and clarifies the concepts, and clarifies the amazingly complicated simple question: Is pramanya svatah or paratah? This is one of those question: Is pramanya svatah or paratah? This is one of those questions to which every school worth the name came forward with an official answer. Arguments and counter-arguments were produced in never-ending stream. This work clarifies the nature of the issue around which the theories centre, and then examines the nature of the arguments that have been advanced by the different schools in support of their contentions Gangesa`s great contribution; to the problem has been brought to the foreground.Printed Pages: 239. 102142

Higher Bureaucracy and Social Change
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351280019; Hardcover; New; New;
Bureaucracy, which is quite often criticised for its indifference towards development and social change, has an added importance in this era of neo-liberal globalisation, especially in any developing societies. This is because of them being the only group that can successfully withstand the avalanche of globalisation. When millions lags behind access to food, water, sanitation, health care etc., the role and responsibility of the state and there by bureaucracy increases, irrespective of the fact that whether they are taking up this responsibility or not. This demands a change in the mindset of the bureaucratic order who are the agents of development and social change in every society. The present book is one critically analysing the role of higher bureaucracy as an agent of social change in the era of liberalisation and globalisation. Issues related to administration, corruption, environment, sustainable development, privatisation of services and human rights forms the core of the book.Printed Pages: 272. 106210

Bundi School of Painting
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170173426; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"Rajasthan is a legendary land of chivalry, sacrifice, romance and heroism. It is a place where colours, too, assume the magnitude of legends making it also the legendary land of India’s miniature paintings. Rajasthan and colours are synonymical : be it the colours in the eyes of a coy maiden; the glowing gold on the countenance of a youth; the brilliant colours of Rajasthani costumes; or the colours scattered on the leaves of paper. Rajasthan with its art activity scattered over the entire land with Mewar, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Kotah, Uniara, Kishangarh, Jaipur and Bundi as its principal centres, has to its credit some of the world’s masterpieces in miniature paintings. The author in this study of Bundi miniatures has attempted to apprehend, though on a smaller scale, the trends and tendencies in the development of Bundi art style during late 16th century to mid 19th century. She has tried to find out the great secret and the mystic strength of inherent lines and colours of Bundi paintings and has thus attempted to know the great ocean by a segment of it. 107910

Early Indian Terracottas
E.J. Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 1995; 9004099247; First Edition; Paperback; Very Good; 19 Cms x 26 Cms
Early Indian Terracottas considers Northern Indian terracottas from the third century B.C. to the first century A.D. It is in these four centuries that — in the most literal sense of the word — the earth was prepared to form the necessary basis for the Buddhist, Brahmanic and Jain iconography for centuries to come. This survey introduces mainly hitherto unpublished and complete figurines and plaques rather than fragments as is the case with most other publications on the same or similar subject. The mostly complete and well preserved moulded plaques and figurines will provide a fresh and clearer insight into the very refined art of the earlier Indian terracottas, which until recently were considered more as pieces of ethnographic interest or folk art rather than art objects in their own right. 'To conclude, Bautze's essay is an important contribution to the study of South Asian religious iconography, thanks both to its excellent raw material and its rigorous (and explicitly stated) methodology.'
