Ancient Fortifications of the Tamil Country as Recorded in Eighteenth-Century French Plans (Collection Indologie: 120)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8184701934; First Edition; Softcover; New;
"" Today, very few Indians know that, in the eighteenth century, the southern part of the peninsula was richly studded with fortifications, great and small, as most of them were dismantled by the British at the beginning of the nineteenth century. These strongholds, some of which had considerable administrative or political importance, were once crowded with large bodies of troops and resounded to the blaring noise of the guns; now they are completely abandoned and silent. In addition to this, temples, edifices dedicated to the service of gods, were also used as forts, though no vestiges of military structures are found around their enclosures today. Fortunately, eighteenth-century French engineers have drawn the plans of several of these defence works. These magnificent watercolour plans preserved in the French Archives are presented here: they illustrate in an extraordinarily precise and explicit manner the technological level of the South Indian fortifications and enable us to comprehend the role they played in the life of the Tamil Country. Social Policy
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 812506284X; First Edition; Softcover; New; 16 x 24 Cm
The reach of social policy in India has expanded significantly in recent years. Facilities such as schools and anganwadis (child care centres) have become an accepted norm for every village; health centres are more accessible and better equipped; nutrition programmes, public works and social security pensions are reaching larger numbers of people than before. Some of these benefits now take the form of enforceable legal entitlements.Yet the performance of these social programmes is far from ideal. Most Indian states still have a long way to go in putting in place effective social policies that directly address the interests, demands and rights of the unprivileged.Social Policy is a collection of essays, previously published in the Economic and Political Weekly, on these and related issues. The 24 chapters have been clustered around six major themes: ‘health’, ‘education’, ‘food security’, ‘employment guarantee’, ‘pensions and cash transfers’ and ‘inequality and social exclusion’. For the first time, wide-ranging analyses of these critical issues by distinguished scholars are brought together in a single volume. The wealth of data presented in these studies will be invaluable to researchers in this field.With an introduction by Jean Drèze, Social Policy will be an indispensible read for students and scholars of sociology, economics, political science and development studies. India - Development and Participation
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195678575; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
India's economy over the last decade looks in many ways like a success story after a major economic crisis in 19 91, followed by bold reform measures, the economy has experienced a rapid economic growth rate, more foreign investment, and a boom in the information technology sector. Yet many in the country still suffer from crushing poverty, and social and political unrest remains a problem. These essays by leading academics, policymakers, and industrialists examine India's recent economic sucesses and their social and cultural context. India's rate of economic growth after the 1991 reforms were instituted reached a remarkable 7 percent for three consecutive years, from 1994 to 1997. Several contributors to the volume ask what this means for the nation as a whole. In his essay 'Democracy and Secularism in India', Amartya Sen argues that economic progress is not the only way to measure a nation's performance. Other contributors examine the actual effect India's economic growth has had on reducing poverty and recommend policies to empower the poor. 033683

An Uncertain Glory: India and its Contradictions
Allen Lane: An Imprint of Penguin Books; London, UK; 2013; 1846147611; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
After two centuries of imperialism and colonial subjugation India attained its Independence in 1947. And in its attempt to earn the freedom of its people, the founding fathers adopted a firm and fair system of democracy to usher in a new chapter in the history of India. The economists place their argument in the period that lay hereafter and the basic flaws in the Indian system. They stress on the attention needed for the marginalized if there is a view to sustain growth and lead the development trajectory into a more dominant position. An Uncertain Glory: India And Its Contradictions explicates the progress of the nation as it overcame the economic lag to earning a growth rate that soon made it the second fastest growing economy in the world. For Dreze and Sen the focus however lies elsewhere and it is in determining the essential needs of the people and bridging the gap of opportunities that they believe there is a chance for India to cash in its true realization of freedom. They discuss the deep inequalities that are entrenched in the Indian system and how the resulting failure to develop human capabilities is stunting its growth. In another vein the economists believe the importance of sustainable growth that is also environmentally conscious and in that respect they lay out the failures of the economy to develop their backbone of infrastructure adequately. The incompetent tackling of public resources that has accrued to India’s phenomenal growth in developing social services and infrastructure is a major concern for the economists. They believe that the quality of life in India is the major concern and therefore the needs and social deprivations of the majority of the people who are among the lower rungs are of priority basis and need to be addressed. The authors lay out a premise for a stronger democratic ethic that concentrates on these neglected corners of Indian policy in this enlightening treatise. Printed Pages: 448. 037560

The Monk and the Philosopher
Penguin/TBI; New Delhi, India; 0805211039; Softcover; New;
Jean Francois-Revel, a pillar of French intellectual life in our time, became world famous for his challenges to both Communism and Christianity. Twenty-seven years ago, his son, Matthieu Ricard, gave up a promising career as a scientist to study Tibetan Buddhism — not as a detached observer but by immersing himself in its practice under the guidance of its greatest living masters.Meeting in an inn overlooking Katmandu, these two profoundly thoughtful men explored the questions that have occupied humankind throughout its history. Does life have meaning? What is consciousness? Is man free? What is the value of scientific and material progress? Why is there suffering, war, and hatred? Their conversation is not merely abstract: they ask each other questions about ethics, rights, and responsibilities, about knowledge and belief, and they discuss frankly the differences in the way each has tried to make sense of his life.Utterly absorbing, inspiring, and accessible, this remarkable dialogue engages East with West, ideas with life, and science with the humanities, providing wisdom on how to enrich the way we live our lives. The Indo-Europeans
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1994; 2950894003; Softcover; New;
We cannot speak of the Indo-Europeans in the same way as one speaks of the Greeks or the Romans, since we possess nothing written by them; for this reason, no site, monument or object can be attributed to them without previous discussion. To begin with, the existence of the ndo-Europeans is not a datum but a second-degree hypothesis. The first hypothesis is that of an Indo-European language. This is the only hypothesis to take into account the multitude of complex and precise correspondences which have been observed in the grammar and vocabulary of most European and a number of Asian languages. The plan of the present study was dictated by no less than its subject. It proceeds from the most immediate data, those of the language and the formulary, to conjectures oncerning location in space and time. The reminder rests on linguistic palaeontology and ìnew comparative mythologyî. It is hoped that these different approaches, ometimes viewed as mutually contradictory, will be seen to meet up with and complement each other.Printed Pages: 165. 102523

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8121506824; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Jean-Baptiste Tavernier's Travels in India contains the details of his journeys that he undertook traversing the greater part of this country. Rightly considered as one of the most renowned travellers of the seventeenth century, his Travels, like those of other European travellers, are an important source-book for the history of India of the seventeenth century. An avid traveller, Tavernier undertook seven voyages to the East of which six brought him to India including Ceylon and South-East Asia between the years 1641 and 1667 and is thus an important source material for the history of Mughal India and Deccan Sultanates. A jeweller by profession, he also undertook journeys to various mines and other sources of precious stones. The present volume of Tavernier's Travels in India has been translated by Valentine Ball and the present edition has been edited by William Crooke. A detailed life-sketch of Tavernier apart, this edition also contains a detailed Bibliography, Notes on Tavernier's History and Geography, six Appendices in which are respectively discussed the Koh-i-nur, list of diamond mines in India, the diamond mines of Bengal, the diamond mines of Boraeo, the ruby mines of Burma and the Sapphire of Washings of Ceylon and two early works by foreign travellers, and a detailed Index and Glossary. An important source-book, Travels in India is an indispensable work for all those interested in various facets of life during the times of the Mughals. The Six Lamps: Secret Dzogchen Instructions of the Bön Tradition
Wisdom/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2017; 1614293643; Softcover; New;
The Instructions on the Six Lamps is a profound and important work from the Bön Dzogchen tradition and is one of the root texts of the Zhangzhung Nyengyü (Oral Transmission of Zhangzhung) series of orally transmitted teachings. Considered to be the central work of the inner cycle of these teachings, it expertly details the principles of the natural state and its visionary marvels. The root text describes highly secret precepts of Dzogchen (Great Perfection) practice—the teachings of Trekchö and Thögel—as revealed by Tapihritsa to Gyerpung Nangzher Löpo. The teachings in this text represent oral instructions transmitted by a single master to a single disciple in the mode known as “single transmission.” It is through such a practice that one can see the clear light of one’s own mind before achieving complete buddhahood. In this respect, the text contains a complete teaching of Dzogchen, from beginning to end. Printed Pages: 240. 112656

Inequality, Cooperation, and Environmental Sustainability
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195691601; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
Would improving the economic, social, and political condition of the world’s disadvantaged people slow or accelerate environmental degradation? Leading social scientists in this volume provide answers to this difficult question, using new research on the impact of inequality on environmental sustainability. The contributors’ findings suggest that inequality may exacerbate environmental problems by making it more difficult for individuals, groups, and nations to cooperate in the design and enforcement of measures to protect natural assets ranging from local commons to the global climate. But a more equal division of a given amount of income could speed the process of environmental degradation. The contributors also find that the effect of inequality on cooperation and environmental sustainability depends critically on the economic and political institutions governing how people interact and the technical nature of the environmental asset in question. They focus on the local commons because many of the world’s poorest depend on them for their livelihoods, and recent research has made great strides in showing how private incentives, group governance, and government policies might combine to protect these resources. 019941

Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2001; 0195657314; First Edition; Paperback; New; 28 Cms x 23 Cms
Among the several European peoples who had early contacts with India, the French occupied a special position. Recent research by French and Indian scholars has revealed many new aspects of the interaction that took place between France and India during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Libraries and archives in France contain rich and as yet unpublished documentation on the subject. In this book Jean-Marie Lafont brings together for the first time a collection of drawings and maps of cities and monuments in eighteenth-century India. The fifty colour illustrations of plans and views of palaces, cities and monuments by French and Indian architects and engineers published here are drawn from the Centre des Archives d'Outre-Mer, Archives Nationales and the Gentil Album of Palais Indiens at the Bibliothque Nationale, Paris. Econometric Modeling and Inference
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 052170006X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
Presents the main statistical tools of econometrics, focusing specifically on modern econometric methodology. The authors unify the approach by using a small number of estimation techniques, mainly generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation and kernel smoothing. The choice of GMM is explained by its relevance in structural econometrics and its preeminent position in econometrics overall. Split into four parts, Part I explains general methods. Part II studies statistical models that are best suited for microeconomic data. Part III deals with dynamic models that are designed for macroeconomic and financial applications. In Part IV the authors synthesize a set of problems that are specific to statistical methods in structural econometrics, namely identification and over-identification, simultaneity, and unobservability. Many theoretical examples illustrate the discussion and can be treated as application exercises. Nobel Laureate James A. Heckman offers a foreword to the work. • A graduate text in econometrics and statistics, emphasizing theory and methods, not applications • Links teaching and recent approaches in research: nonparametric techniques and simulation methods, game theory and treatment effects • Contains numerous theoretical examples that are solved in the discussion Contents Part I. Statistical Methods: 1. Statistical models; 2. Sequential models and asymptotics; 3. Estimation by maximization and by the method of moments; 4. Asymptotic tests; 5. Nonparametric methods; 6. Simulation methods; Part II. Regression Models: 7. Conditional expectation; 8. Univariate regression; 9. Generalized least squares method, heteroskedasticity, and multivariate regression; 10. Nonparametric estimation of the regression; 11. Discrete variables and partially observed models; Part III. Dynamic Models: 12. Stationary dynamic models; 13. Nonstationary processes and cointegration; 14. Models for conditional variance; 15. Nonlinear dynamic models; Part IV. Structural Modeling: 16. Identification and over identification in structural modeling; 17. Simultaneity; 18. Models with unobservable variables. Printed Pages: 517. 020834

Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, 5 Vols.
Elsevier; New York, USA; 2006; 0125126603; First Edition; Hardcover; New;
The Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics provides a complete resource for researchers, students and lecturers with an interest in mathematical physics. It enables readers to access basic information on topics peripheral to their own areas, to provide a repository of the core information in the area that can be used to refresh the researcher's own memory banks, and aid teachers in directing students to entries relevant to their course-work. The Encyclopedia does contain information that has been distilled, organised and presented as a complete reference tool to the user and a landmark to the body of knowledge that has accumulated in this domain. It also is a stimulus for new researchers working in mathematical physics or in areas using the methods originating from work in mathematical physics by providing them with focused high quality background information. Editorial Board: Jean-Pierre Francoise, Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France Gregory L. Naber, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA Tsou Sheung Tsun, University of Oxford, UK Also available online via ScienceDirect (2006) – featuring extensive browsing, searching, and internal cross-referencing between articles in the work, plus dynamic linking to journal articles and abstract databases, making navigation flexible and easy. Seeking Bauls of Bengal
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2003; 0521811252; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
‘Bauls’ have achieved fame as wandering minstrels and mystics in India and Bangladesh. They are recruited from both Hindu and Muslim communities and are renowned for their beautiful and often enigmatic songs. Despite their iconic status as representatives of the spiritual East, and although they have been the subject of a number of studies, systematic research with Bauls themselves has been neglected. Jeanne Openshaw’s book is new, not only in analysing the rise of the Bauls to their present revered status, but in the depth of its ethnographic research and its reference to the lives of composers and singers as a context for their songs. The author uses her fieldwork, and oral and manuscript materials, to lead the reader from the conventional historical and textual approaches towards a world defined by people called ‘Baul’, where the human body and love are primary and where women may be extolled above men. Karma
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184954980; Softcover; New;
In this compelling description of the ancient science of karma, award-winning author Jeffrey Armstrong explores reincarnation, the deeper mysteries of the soul, the laws of nature, and the ways in which cause and effect control our lives.In the 21st century, we frequently attribute events to science or to mechanical cause and effect. However, the Enlightened Masters believe that such events are actually brought about by the purposeful action of countless devas, or divine beings. These devas surround us in all we do and are constantly deciding upon and delivering to us the results of our actions.These long-secret laws of karma, excavated from the Vedic wisdom of India, will inform your decisions and broaden your spiritual vision, revealing the profoundly interconnected nature of all that exists.Printed Pages: 100. 105351

The Heart of Meditation The Dalai Lama: Discovering Innermost Awareness
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2016; 1559394536; Hardcover; New; New;
The heart of meditation—the thing that brings it alive—is compassion. Without that essential foundation, other practices are pointless. Fortunately, the mind can be trained in compassion, and the mind thus trained with the qualities of love, empathy, kindness, and respect for others is ready for the practice of the Great Completeness (Dzogchen), which is considered the pinnacle of spiritual practice in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. His Holiness the Dalai Lama here teaches the Great Completeness simply but thoroughly, using as his reference a visionary poem by the nineteenth-century master Patrul Rinpoche to show that insight can never be separated from compassion. Through practice of the Great Completeness, we can access our innermost awareness and live our lives in a way that acknowledges it and manifests it. The wisdom and compassion that arise from such insight are critical, His Holiness teaches, not only to individual progress in meditation but to our collective progress toward peace in the world. Beating Goliath: Why Insurgencies Win
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380177144; Softcover; New;
Beating Goliath examines the phenomenon of victories by the weak over the strong—more specifically, insurgencies that succeeded against great powers. Jeffrey Record reviews eleven insurgent wars from 1775 to the present and determines why the seemingly weaker side won. He concludes that external assistance correlates more consistently with insurgent success than any other explanation. He does not disparage the critical importance of will, strategy, and strong-side regime type or suggest that external assistance guarantees success. Indeed, in all cases, some combination of these factors is usually present. But Record finds few if any cases of unassisted insurgent victories except against the most decrepit regimes. Having identified the ingredients of insurgent success, Record examines the present insurgency in Iraq and whether the United States can win. In so doing, Record employs a comparative analysis of the Vietnam War and the Iraq War. He also identifies and assesses the influence of distinctive features of the American way of war on the U.S. forces’ performance against the Iraqi insurgency. Make no mistake: insurgent victories are the exception, not the rule. But when David does beat Goliath, the consequences can be earth shattering and change the course of history. Jeffrey Record’s persuasive logic and clear writing make this timely book a must read for scholars, policymakers, military strategists, and anyone interested in the Iraq War’s outcome.Printed Pages: 192. 103301

The Goddess Within and Beyond the Three Cities: Shakta Tantra and the Paradox of Power in Nepala-Mandala
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8124608768; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
Contents: Preface. Introduction: Tracking the Stories of Devi. 1. The Goddess Embodied: Tripurasundari and the Tricosmos. 2. Tantric Sadhana: Harnessing the Powers of Shakti. 3. The Mandala-Hologram: Centres, Peripheries, and the Dance of Power. 4. The Reverberating Goddess: The Kumari and the King. Conclusion: Will the Devi’s Power Be Enough? Appendices. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. In this groundbreaking study on Sarvamnaya Shakta Tantra in Nepal, Jeffrey S. Lidke combines the study of primary sources with the investigation of living interpretations of these sources by contemporary Nepalese practitioners. Lidke focuses his twenty-year analysis on a specific Tantric tradition - Shri Vidya - a specific deity - Tripurasundari - a specific text Nityashodashikarnava - and a specific set of initiates within a specific locale - the Kathmandu Valley. This emphasis on specificity enables the author to contextualize his study within the unique Nepalese historical and socio-cultural context, and thereby to represent Sarvamnaya Shakta Tantra not as a static, universal "ism" present in a single form throughout the subcontinent, but as a dynamic place-specific tradition reflecting the nuanced ways that peoples and institutions shape their religious traditions according to the power negotiations that arise in Tantric worlds in which individuals imagine they can be like the gods they worship. The central symbol that drives these negotiations in Nepal is the Mandala, a pan-Tantric instrument of worship by which Tantric practitioners - be they kings, commoners, artisans or warriors - navigate, imagine and identify with the territories in which they live and strive to obtain their mundane and spiritual aims. The Mandala’s ubiquitous presence is found not just overtly in city designs, temple architecture and a seemingly infinite array of artistic representations (including sculpture, painting, music and dance) but also covertly in the secret rituals and meditation practices of initiates at all levels of Nepalese society, ranging from lower caste girls to the former kings of Nepal. Faith Possesses Understanding: A Suggestion for a New Direction in Rational Theology
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1983; 8170221757; Hardcover; New; New;
Professor Chubbs work deals with the problem of the rationality of religious faith at the meta philosophical level. It is, he believes, of the utmost importance to recognize different patterns of rationality and to ask, what is the concept of rationality or profit that is relevant to theological discourse. A significant clue, ignored by philosophers who operate with a model of rationality derived from mathematics, is that religious faith has always been taken by those who practice religion to be in some way self-contained and independent of logical demonstration, without necessarily ruling out the possibility of a rational endorsement of faith. But when faith goes out of itself to seek understanding using arguments that are religiously neutral, it creates an intolerable tension within religious experience causing periodic outbursts of different forms of irrationalism which, in attempting to destroy themselves. The tension is resolved when it is realized that what is intuitively felt to be self-contained is also self-validating. Faith in some way already possesses the understanding that it seeks. The task of rational theology is to show how this is indeed the case. The author rejects all traditional arguments for the existence of God by showing that transcendent metaphysics is only the elaboration of the tautology God is God. In accordance with his meta philosophical disclosures his argument moves within the sphere of faith end at the same time, from the logical point of view, remains fully autonomous. Athens, he maintains, must be found in the soul of Jerusalem. Printed Pages: 235. 112075

E.G. Gulinin ekumeeninen työ ja ajattelu
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2009; 9525031543; New;
