14501 Jawaharlal Nehru
An Autobiography
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0670058025; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Jawaharlal Nehru's life was closely intertwined with the history and destiny of modern India. His Autobiography, written between 1934 and 1935 when he was in prison, is more than the personal story of an individual—it is also an account of the political awakening of a nation, its struggle for freedom from British rule, and its search to reshape itself as a modern society, rid of the cultural and economic shackles of the past. Through this narrative, written with extraordinary eloquence and honesty, and illuminated with vibrant descriptions of Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders of the national movement, emerges the portrait of the author himself—a complex and introspective personality with a brilliant and questing mind, a deep love of nature, an engaging zest for life and, above all, a passionate commitment to democracy and secularism. Letters for a Nation: From Jawaharlal Nehru to His Chief Ministers (1947-1963)
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0670087726; Hardcover; New; New;
In October 1947, two months after he became independent India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru wrote the first of his fortnightly letters to the heads of the country’s provincial governments – a tradition that he kept until his last letter in December 1963, only a few months before his death. Carefully selected from among nearly 400 such letters, this collection covers a range of themes and subjects, including citizenship, war and peace, law and order, national planning and development, governance and corruption, and India’s place in the world. The letters also cover momentous world events and the many crises and conflicts the country faced during the first sixteen years after Independence. Visionary, wise and reflective, these letters are not just a testimony to Nehru’s statesmanship and his deep engagement with every aspect of India’s democratic journey, but are also of great contemporary relevance for the guidance they provide for our current problems and predicaments.Printed Pages: 400. 103396

The Maverick Republic
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174362134; Softcover; New;
An alarming paradox emerges from witnessing prevalent national currents over the past three decades. The ominous paradox is that despite the demonstrable political wisdom of the humble voter and the valiant attempts of the common citizen to seek a semblance of material progress and social equity, those with money, power and influence have relentlessly pushed the country into a wildly individualistic quagmire of greed, self-indulgence and cruelty. A country where there are no standards, no rules or principles to carry out even the simplest transaction, where everything is permissible, where anything goes. The largest democracy has become The Maverick Republic. Printed Pages: 240. 108572

Crafts Atlas of India
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8189738372; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 30 Cm
Mapping India’s crafts was a mammoth task that took eleven years. During this period, many new crafts were born, skills rejuvenated and some may have languished and faded away. The nature of crafts production in India is both ephemeral and resilient. India’s crafts journey resembles the progress of a river from the mountains to the ocean, picking up material, depositing some, changes course, disappearing underground to surface somewhere else. Yet, the tradition continues forever. The Dastkari Haat Samiti, a national association of craftspeople, undertook the enormous task of documenting whatever skills and crafts it could find and created artistic crafts maps of each state of India. Three new states were born during the process. A traditional art form of each state provides the backdrop for information meticulously gathered from first and second hand sources. The maps provide resource material to people working in different disciplines and a source of aesthetic joy to anyone who uses them as wall posters. The vibrant illustrations and academically rich content are recreated as an atlas of India’s crafts, handmade textiles and traditional arts, covering India’s cultural history. Crafts Atlas of India is therefore a unique documentation and a rare visual treat. Printed Pages: 464. 037128

Woven textiles of Varanasi
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098378; Hardcover; New; New;
One of the strongest and best known traditions of weaving in India is situated in Varanasi. It has had a tumultuous history of ups and downs but has steadfastly refused to be obliterated. Many cities have risen and fallen, but Varanasi clings to its title as the oldest living city in the world. The River Ganga flows by, offering a sense of sacredness, continuity and eternal salvation for those whose last rites are performed on its banks. Hundreds of thousands of visitors touch upon Varanasi as a place of pilgrimage, to connect with history or to get under the skin of India’s spirituality. Against this backdrop, the author, Jaya Jaitly, emphasises the need to acknowledge the beauty of Varanasi’s textiles emerging out of age-old traditions and techniques. She highlights the danger of the loss of livelihoods and highly sophisticated skills. The erosion of identity and importance in the wake of machine-made imitations being produced in other parts of the world has already begun. The book also presents a significantly curated cross – section of the textile treasures offered by Varanasi. She combines the past and the present, linking them to different moments in the city’s history, and makes a powerful case for rediscovering, preserving and patronizing these textile treasures that are inextricably bound to the ancient aura of the city.Printed Pages: 128 with 118 colour photographs. 106608

Leipzig Mission and Dalit Christians in Pandur, Tamil Nadu
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351481904; Hardcover; New; New;
This book exposes the discriminations suffering of Pandur Dalits in Tamilnadu and how the Leipzig Evangelical Missionaries helped them to overcome their situations. The Leipzig Evangelical Lutheran Mission (LELM) was a major mission in Pandur near Chennai. Pandur is intimately associated with Rev. Johannes Kabis who came to India in 1877. Pandur has been a thriving Christian centre for decades with a strong Christian congregation, Church and several institutions. These Christians are descendants of Dalits (former untouchable Paraiyars) who embraced Christianity. From a life of near slavery, poverty, illiteracy, oppression and indignity, conversion to Christianity transformed their lives. Purpose of this book is to elucidate the role of Leipzig missionaries in the social, economic, educational and spiritual life of Pandur Dalits. Printed Pages: 99. 113674

Re-Reading Household Relationships Christologically: Ephesians, Empire and Egalitarianism
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789351481898; Hardcover; New; New;
Why has the biblical passage, Eph. 5:21-33 traditionally been used to reiterate the subordinate position of wives and women in general? This book attempts to analyze the Jewish, Greco-Roman and Christian elements of household relationships in the letter to the Ephesians as a site for postcolonial feminist theological formulations. While there are negotiations with the colonial and patriarchal environment, one may also find how the author struggles to retain the egalitarianism of early Christian church. The imagery of Christ-church union and mutuality in "one flesh" marital relationship provide pointers to re-read the text towards de-colonizing and de-patriarchalizing the Ephesian household codes. China Unveiled: Insights into Chinese Strategic Thinking
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904435; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book seeks to afford an objective, incisive insight into China. Written by a veteran Indian analyst with over 25 years of experience monitoring developments relating to contemporary China, it is an attempt to inform and promote understanding of Chinas policies and actions and, especially, the implications for India. The 32 essays that comprise the book present a comprehensive tour de horizon of present-day China ranging across a variety of subjects. Each of the aspects touched upon have direct relevance for the international community and particularly for India and the Asia-Pacific region. The first section deals exclusively with Chinas currently evolving internal political situation. The outline sketches of Chinas two top leaders suggest their personalities influence Beijings policies and that Chinas domestic and foreign policies will undoubtedly bear their imprimatur. Other articles examine the equally important and rapidly evolving political scenario in China, especially concerning the selection of cadres to the Chinese Communist Partys highest echelons. The absence of veteran leaders of pre-eminence and unquestioned authority has accentuated competition within the Chinese Communist Party and indicators of potential discord, like the political upheaval involving ex-Politburo member Bo Xilai, have been identified. The book notes the attempt by Chinas leadership to rearrange national economic developmental priorities to remain competitive in a changing international environment and includes a debate centering on the Yuan rivaling the US dollar. Two articles assess the implications of Chinas maritime ambitions and Cyber strategy, both of which are centerpieces of Chinas military strategy. Other articles discuss in some detail the India-China relationship, Chinas relations with some of Indias neighbours, and Sino-US relations described by Beijing as Chinas single, most important relationship. A subject usually less focused upon though of vital strategic importance to India, namely Chinas strategy regarding Tibetan Buddhists and the Dalai Lama, is scrutinized in the books concluding section. This includes the developmental activity in Tibet and plans to divert the waters of the Brahmaputra, both of which have a serious potential to impact on India.Printed Pages:330. 104320

Jaina Relativism and Relativity Physics
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120838157; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Einstein's theory of relativity which appeared in the early twentieth century. Shook many fundamental concepts in physics such as space, time, mass, energy and gravitation. However, it led to many misconceptions. Lay persons often equated it with the concept of non-absolutism, relativity or relativism which is found in many philosophical systems.Unfortunately, the theory spawned many misconceptions. Lay persons asserted, "Everything is relative", "You can go back in time". Those who were familiar with the western as well as eastern philosophy of relativism or relativity or non absolutism claimed, "Our ancestors talked about relativity long back" or "Our forebears had anticipated Einstein long ago." Most of these misperceptions stem form the fact that Einstein uses the word "relativity" for his theory in physics. Undoubtedly there are many theories of philosohical relativity. They assert on-absolutism of knowledge. Most of these theories are idealist which deny objective cognition and content that human knowledge does not reflect the objective world.In Jaina relativism called anekantavada or syadvada one finds a rare combination of non absolutism and objectivity. Anekantavada is one of the main pillars of Jaina philosophy and religion. It believes in rationality, objectivity and like science relies on empirical evidence.Printed Pages: 171. 102028

The Mystique of Om (Second Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8178222817; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
Om is the most sacred mantra in major Indic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It symbolizes affirmation, benediction and peace, and is used ritualistically in prayers, invocations and ceremonies, religious as well as secular. It is also a magical symbol beyond compare and is regarded as a vehicle of attaining liberation (moksha). Not only this, at the highest level, it is identified with Brahman, the Ultimate Reality. Using the Vedas, Upanishads, Yoga, Tantra and several religious texts as his sources, the author describes a plethora of interpretations of this mystical monosyllable which has since time immemorial captivated its worshipers, put yogis into trance, made Tantra practitioners ecstatic, and sent its changers into religious frenzy. The author also explains secular interpretations of Om in linguistics, psychology and structural analysis.Printed Pages: 192. 102094

Buddhist Logic and Quantum Dilemma
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120835522; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Buddhism is a religion, but not a dogma. Its agnosticism and rational outlook has attracted many western scientists. There is abundant literature on similarities between Buddhism and Science. Two theories, relativity theory and quantum theory shook the very foundation of physics in the 20th century. Of the two, quantum theory reveals a truly mysterious sub-atomic world with its mind-boggling phenomena. For example, such entities as electrons, protons and photons (light particles)or waves as the occasion demands. This is called matter-wave duality. In Buddhist philosophy scholars have found a doctrine called catuskoti which is astonishingly similar to matter-wave duality. violate the Aristotelion laws of thought. The book analyzes two apparently contradictory parallels; (1) similarity between Buddhist philosophy and scientific thought, and (ii) resemblance between mystical catuskoti and mysterious matter-wave duality. The book also tries to dispel misconceptions harboured by lay persons about quantum theory.Printed Pages: 430. 102345

The World of Rhythm Called Rituals
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178223325; Softcover; New;
When someone mentions rituals we usually think of religious rituals such as prayer, puja, marriage ceremonies, sermons and so on. However, if we introspect a little, we realize that we spend most of our life in performing rituals of one type or another. Most of our activities from morning till night are ritualistic. This book explains how rituals are closely connected with verse, music and dance. It asserts that like music and dance rituals belong to the world of rhythm. By ritual we mean any stylized behaviour that recurs. Rituals abound in all walks of life: social intercourse, military affairs, law and politics, education and so forth. In most rituals rhythm is manifest and loud. In a few rituals which have a slow tempo, some analysis is necessary to detect rhythmic patterns. The author beautifully portrays the types of rituals and the rhythms they generate from the babbling of a child to a band parade or the chanting of a mantra. He explains the initiation and completion of patterns that form the rhythm. This book shows that like music and dance, rituals belong to the world of rhythm. A discussion on ritual instinct is given at greater length. The book further proceeds to ‘Hermeneutics’ or the science of interpretation and explains rituals in their light. There are many technical words from music, dance and religion. These have been explained in the text. A glossary which can be used for ready reference has been provided. The notes which have been added after each chapter are meant for those who would like to know more about the relevant topic.Printed Pages: 164. 102496

Rituals, Mantras and Science: An Integral Perspective
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8120820533; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 17 Cms x 25 Cms
In this book the author discusses the place of science in rituals and mantras. Using structual analysis he shows that rituals in general, whether religious, political, social or otherwise have common structural patterns. These patterns are shared by poetry, music, dance and gymnastics, but not by language. Consideration of animal rituals and pathological (compulsive) rituals leads him to propose a general theory which unifies all ritual-like activities. He also introduces the concept of ritual instinct which can make the theory simpler and more elegant. He shows how knowledge can be divided into science, non-science and pseudo-science to understand the true status of such strange phenomena as miracles, supernatural powers, siddhis, samadhi, rebirth and ESP. Facts and Speculations in Cosmology
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0521134242; First Edition; Paperback; New; 160 x 240 Mm
A thought-provoking insight into the evolution of cosmology for undergraduate students and general readers, this book shows that the mystery of the origin of the universe is far from being solved. Cosmology has advanced over time through observational evidence as well as a lot of speculation. In this historical approach, the authors argue that the speculative element has become a dominant part of modern cosmology. They show how assumptions have been made and portrayed as confirmed facts. This unique book gives not only a critical assessment of the big bang theory, but presents a host of anomalous observations, and puts forward an alternative, controversial theory on the origin of the universe. A non-mathematical account, it contains analogies from everyday life so that readers can understand the concepts easily and follow the arguments presented. Contents 1. Ancient cosmologies 2. The Greek epicycles 3. Reaching out to the milky way 4. Our position in the galaxy 5. The world of galaxies 6. The expanding universe 7. Modelling the universe 8. What is the geometry of the universe like? 9. A universe without a beginning and without an end 10. The cosmological debate 1950-1965 11. The origin of the chemical elements 12. Water, Ecosystems and Society: A Confluence of Disciplines
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 817829933X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is an articulation of the much needed paradigm shift in the knowledge base for water systems management. It discusses the ecological and socio-economic dimensions of water, inclusion of which in sustainable and integrated water systems management has become essential the world over. It is path-breaking in terms of its conceptualisation since water management in India has traditionally been associated with the domain of engineering which tries to increase the quantity of water, to cater to increasing needs of human settlements and demands from irrigation and industry. This work, however, conceives water management as an interdisciplinary subject which needs to be understood not in terms of engineering alone, but in terms of its economic, sociological and, of course, ecological dimensions. Water, Ecosystems and Society: A Confluence of Disciplines is an excellent guide to interdisciplinary knowledge on water. It draws attention to ecological benefits of floods, economic productivity of water systems and the feasibility of the proposed river-link project of India. It focuses on the need to recognise ecosystem services provided by rivers as well as the necessity of environmental flows in such a system. The book deals with emerging areas of research, by connecting ecology, economics and water management. It will be a compelling read for academicians and students working in the fields of geography and environment science, development economics, environmental sociology, ecology, integrated water management, and so on. India-Bangladesh Relations: Current Perspectives
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502649; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The importance of a thorough analysis of the current state of India-Bangladesh relations can hardly be exaggerated. Sceptics may observe that India can afford to remain indifferent to relationships with Bangladesh, whereas Bangladesh cannot do so vis-à-vis India. But realities do not admit of such skeptic oversimplification. With India’s northeast region remaining chronically unstable, and with count ries across this region, e.g. China and Myanmar, trying to improve their relations with Bangladesh (which itself provides a commercial gateway to India’s northeast region), India has to upgrade substantially its relations with Bangladesh in order to safeguard some of its vital interests. The necessity to strengthen the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) provides an additional impetus to the urgency of such upgradation. The disparity in the size and resources of India and Bangladesh are but a misleading indicator of the present importance of India-Bangladesh relations.Printed Pages: 104. 104379

Parliamentary Democracy in North East Indian
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351281610; Hardcover; New; New;
As mentioned in the beginning of the “Acknowledgement”, I found a general absence of political sense in the tribes of North-east India when I was conducting extensive and intensive field study to understand the socio-cultural characteristics of the Buddhist tribes of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. (I had earlier studied a similar aspect amongst the Tibetans in India—both refugees and traditional settlers, who had come as traders many centuries back and become Indian citizens). These tribal communities are vehemently conscious of their language, culture and way of life and their “politics” is fighting for those basic rights from both the State governments and the Government of India. We are fully aware of the long-term struggle of the Bodos and the Karbis of Assam. They, unlike the Ahoms or the Bengalis or any other language group of India, are least bothered about problems of India as such, not even if and when Pakistan or China attacks India! They only want their very special identity established. I took up Meghalaya and Sikkim out of the seven sisters of the North-east because their political systems and the awareness amongst the electors and the elected both appeared diametrically opposite! There was no Opposition in Sikkim Assembly (till the recent 2014 election) and no single majority party (again till the recent election) in Meghalaya! The government was of coalition and the Opposition too, was of coalition! In Sikkim the voters appeared so very fully contended with Pawan Chamling as the Chief Minister that they could not think of any other party other than SDF. The deep anti-Congressism (which had sprung up due to Congress Party's role in annexing Sikkim to the Indian Union when the common people were quite contended with the utterly benevolent monarch) had also made Sikkim Democratic Front utterly popular. In Meghalaya no party or no leader appeared to be above board thus leaving the voters totally confused. So, they mostly voted for the leader they personally liked ! There was no political consideration. The vote-seekers too, had no specific or attractive agenda that could possibly mobilize the voters successfully. They were unhappy with whichever coalition that came to power without realizing that too many cooks spoil the broth! They lacked the political sense to realize that a steady government can possibly indulge into some developmental activity. The parties and the leaders too, had no specific manifesto. Thus parliamentary type of democracy was missing in all the States I studied. It is for my readers to find out where they went wrong and where I went wrong!.Printed Pages: 282. 106126

Silver Lining: Insights into Gujarat
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125054723; Softcover; New;
A success story of national pride and achievement, Silver Lining is told most engagingly by a civil servant whose experiences in Gujarat deserve to be widely known. Jayanti Ravi is not only an observer but an active participant in this theatre of higher education where motives and methods meet several lives to enrich them amid numerous challenges and privations. True learning, argues Ravi, begins when we learn to read the world rather than the word, instances of which she cites and celebrates in these pages. Above all, non-formal education has had very few committed votaries, a regrettable shortcoming Ravi’s pages will certainly redress/ overcome.Printed Pages: 95. 101906

European Union in Changing International Order
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8174791221; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
European Union (EU) is presumably a major player in the world. The developments within the EU and its external postures have theoretical implications and apparent consequences to the rest of the world. The integration process touching the core areas of nation states has prompted a relook into our hitherto-held notions on political categories. This process has invoked a mixed response on the future of Europe, including questions about its identity and the loyalty of its people as well as the further expansion of EU to include Turkey. The neo-liberal economic policies of EU which were not articulated in clear terms earlier have now become quite assertive and have a significant bearing on its interaction with other sovereign countries. EU's `strategic partnerships' and relations with major countries of the world as well as its increasing role in conflict areas signifies the emergence of EU as a global political actor. These multi-faceted developments invariably make EU a curious entity. The thirteen essays by Indian and European scholars presented in this volume critically debate and examine the implications of EU as a global actor. These essays analyse the future of EU and the Euro in the backdrop of the current economic crisis and debate on the admission of Turkey. The external priorities of EU and its linkages and perspectives towards China, South Asia, and in particular, India are evaluated in the light of recent developments.Printed Pages: 335. 104139

Intellectual Property Rights in the WTO and Developing Countries
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0195661702; Softcover; New;
Although it is common knowledge that the compliance of developing countries with the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) has become a serious stumbling block in the WTO agenda, the underlying reasons why this is so have not been dispassionately analyzed until the appearance of this book. Here, for the first time, is a thorough and secure foundation on which international trade lawyers and business people can build a global intellectual property regime that is both productive and fair. The implementation of the TRIPS regime with its enormous effect on national and global strategies for healthcare, agriculture, and the environment, among other crucial sectors of the world economy is clearly among the most critical projects currently under way in the field of international relations. As a former TRIPS negotiator for India, Jayashree Watal brings great authority to her account of the benefits and pitfalls of TRIPS compliance for developing countries. She provides a detailed understanding of how TRIPS was negotiated at the Uruguay Round, how various countries have implemented it so far, and how the WTO monitors compliance. She reveals how the WTO dispute settlement process has worked to date in matters involving TRIPS, and how it is likely to deal with new issues that arise. Most importantly, she explains how developing countries can interpret TRIPS to their best advantage, and how to ensure that the `constructive ambiguity` that characterizes the agreement remains flexible. 108864

Epic Sciences in Indian Plastic Art
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170172284; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"The immortal epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are the cherished and prized heritage of Indian culture. The idealized versions of Rama and Krishna narrated in the two epics and the Bhagwat Purana, the episodes and characters described in them have sunk deep into the psyche of every Indian. Like Buddhism, which provided inspiring themes to the Indian artist, the epics too inspired the Indian sculptor to execute his artistic creations in stone, stucco and terracotta in rock caves and temples all over the subcontinent. The artistic depiction of the epic themes in different ages and regions testifies to the universal and ever-lasting popularity of the epics with the Indian artists. In spite of the gap of centuries between the Gupta period and the medieval period, the core values and the personality of the ideal or semi-miraculous personages depicted in the Indian sculpture remain changeless. 108009

The Jewel Ornament of Liberation: The Wish-fulfilling Gem of the Noble Teachings
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120836987; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This is not just a text for beginners, but one of the primary Kagyu texts and of immense relevance and benefit to all practitioners regardless of what stage they are at. In addition to providing a step-by-step outline of the path to Buddhahood, the teachings on the innate Buddha nature can provide students with the confidence to enter the path, while those already on the path can find in its twenty-one chapters much to inspire and keep them moving along the unmistaken path of liberation. Often texts such as this with their vast scope are in parts necessarily quite pithy. Therefore, to gain clear understanding it is traditional to receive thorough commentaries on these aspects. However, due to their great length detailed explanations are quite extensive and thus can be difficult to receive. Yet, here we have the great blessings of a complete commentary by the great contemporary Kagyu master Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche in which he gives a detailed explanation of this text. "Here are presented talks by the unequaled spiritual friend, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. These talks are especially wonderful in presenting the teachings so that they are easily understood and their meaning realized. It is said that if one practices the profound Dharma given here, now and in the future, one will become truly joyful." - The Seventeenth Gyalwa Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje.Printed Pages: 453. 102376

Language Change: Progress or Decay?
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2001; 0521795354; Third Edition; Paperback; New; 198 x 129 Mm
This is a lucid and up-to-date overview of language change. It discusses where our evidence about language change comes from, how and why changes happen, and how languages begin and end. It considers both changes which occurred long ago, and those currently in progress. It does this within the framework of one central question - is language change a symptom of progress or decay? It concludes that language is neither progressing nor decaying, but that an understanding of the factors surrounding change is essential for anyone concerned about language alteration. For this substantially revised third edition, Jean Aitchison has included two new chapters on change of meaning and grammaticalization. Sections on new methods of reconstruction and ongoing chain shifts in Britain and America have also been added as well as over 150 new references. The work remains non-technical in style and accessible to readers with no previous knowledge of linguistics. • Lucid and up-to-date overview of language change • Third edition of this bestselling textbook is substantially revised and includes two new chapters • Non-technical in style and accessible to the reader with no previous knowledge of linguistics Contents Part I. The Seeds of Speech: Language Origin and Evolution
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2000; 0521785715; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Human language is a weird communication system: it has more in common with birdsong than with the calls of other primates. In this wide-ranging and accessible overview, Jean Aitchison explores the origins of human language and how it has evolved. She likens the search to a vast pre-historic jigsaw puzzle, in which numerous fragments of evidence must be assembled. Such evidence is pieced together from a mixture of linguistic and non-linguistic sources like evolution theory, archaeology, psychology, and anthropology. She explains why language is so strange, outlines recent theories about its origin, and discusses possible paths of evolution. Finally, Jean Aitchison considers what holds all languages together and prevents them from becoming unlearnably different from one another. The Seeds of Speech is a fascinating book that will appeal to everyone who is interested in the origins and evolution of human language, including linguists, anthropologists, psychologists, archaeologists, and the general reader. Contents Preface; Part I. Puzzles: 1. A natural curiosity: how did language begin?; 2. A peculiar habit: what is language for?; 3. The bother at Babel: why do languages differ so much?; 4. Distinct duties: is language an independent skill?; Part II. Origin: 5. The family tree: the evolutionary background; 6. A devious mind: the basic requirements; 7. Broken air: inherited ingredients; 8. Small beginnings: first steps; Part III. Evolution: 9. The secong word: the emergence of rules; 10. The tower of speech: expansion; 11. Time travelling: extra attachments; 12. Rebuilding on the high seas: keeping going; Part IV. Diffusion: 13. The widening circle: moving outwards; 14. The hidden core: the hunt for universals; 15. Tocqueville in India (French Writings on India and South Asia)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383166022; Hardcover; New; New;
India has always been a land of contrasts and marvels. Today it contrives to be a functioning democracy in the midst of a society that remains inherently hierarchical. In order to grasp this paradox in all its dimensions, Jean Alphonse Bernard resolved to revisit the realities of India now in the company of Alexis de Tocqueville ( 1805-59). Tocqueville in India explores the enduring dialogue between the State and Society. Following neither Fukuyama nor Huntingdon, this book should attract the attention of those concerned by Indian issues as well as every reader interested in political philosophy or world affairs.Printed Pages: 260. 101994

Ancient Fortifications of the Tamil Country as Recorded in Eighteenth-Century French Plans (Collection Indologie: 120)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8184701934; First Edition; Softcover; New;
"" Today, very few Indians know that, in the eighteenth century, the southern part of the peninsula was richly studded with fortifications, great and small, as most of them were dismantled by the British at the beginning of the nineteenth century. These strongholds, some of which had considerable administrative or political importance, were once crowded with large bodies of troops and resounded to the blaring noise of the guns; now they are completely abandoned and silent. In addition to this, temples, edifices dedicated to the service of gods, were also used as forts, though no vestiges of military structures are found around their enclosures today. Fortunately, eighteenth-century French engineers have drawn the plans of several of these defence works. These magnificent watercolour plans preserved in the French Archives are presented here: they illustrate in an extraordinarily precise and explicit manner the technological level of the South Indian fortifications and enable us to comprehend the role they played in the life of the Tamil Country.
