Employment and Development: Essays from an Unorthodox Perspective
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195680820; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
Amit Bhaduri's distinction as an economic theorist lies in challenging mainstream theory in a precise yet compelling way. The essays in this collection, written by the author over the last quarter century, mark a fresh approach to one of the most important economic problem of our time. Why poverty and unemployment, as two sides of the same problem, appear and persist, and are often bypassed by the process of development? The author looks at this problem from a multidimensional perspective. In the first section he discusses some of the theoretical issues involved, and point to oversights in standard theorizing on the subject. The second section draws out the connection between development of a predominantly agrarian economy and unemployment. The final section deals with the problem in the context of transitional economies of east Europe and draws lessons. In particular the essays highlight the errors from the use of orthodox theories relied on by the IMF and the World Bank. By rejecting the uncritical and mechanical acceptance of globalization as the remedy to all evils, the author invites the reader to think independently, and thereby stimulates argument and debate. 019703

Odysseus Abroad
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd.; Delhi, India; 2014; 0670086193; Hardcover; New; New;
He saw his uncle once or twice a week. They got on each other’s nerves, but had grown fond of the frisson. He was Ananda’s sole friend in London—and Ananda his. ‘Friend’ was right; because his uncle was capable of being neither uncle, nor father, nor brother. Ananda’s uncle, Rangamama, is an eccentric bachelor who has taken early retirement and lives off his pension in a squalid bedsit in Belsize Park. His habits are angular—he rarely bathes, and devours paranormal stories—and his personality combative. Ananda, by contrast, is fragile, nervous and romantic. Uncle and nephew circle around their past, walk the streets of London and find in each other, an unspoken solace. A retelling of the story of Odysseus and Telemachus, Odysseus Abroad is a novel about a young man and an old man, about friendship, loneliness and love. Written in a voice at once tender and ribald, wry and unsentimental, this is Amit Chaudhuri’s most extraordinary novel yet.Printed Pages: 256. 103381

The Strategic Shape of the World: Proceedings of MEA-IISS Foreign Policy Dialogue
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178299364; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book is a compilation of the proceedings of the MEA-IISS Foreign Policy Dialogue held at New Delhi in December 2007. The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is the world’s leading think tank on international security, political risk and military conflict. It provides trusted and independent analysis for professionals and institutions wanting cutting-edge information on global developments and their effect on political and economic affairs. Similarly, the Public Diplomacy division of the Ministry of External Affairs was especially created in April 2006 as it was increasingly felt that in today’s world, successful foreign policy practitioners would need to have an open and regular dialogue with civil society, NGOs, academia, think tanks and media. This dialogue between the IISS and the Public Diplomacy division of the MEA focuses on three subjects: the strategic shape of the world (in terms of foreign policies of different nations), international terrorism and energy security. It emphasizes that in the context of globalization and economic interdependence, the real source of danger lies not in the fact of supremacy of the Westphalian state order, but in issues like terrorism, energy security and environmental and climate change which threaten stability. These are recognized as global threats and the dialogue focuses on ways to deal with them. Printed Pages: 120. 032851

Indian Management: Thought and Practice
Gen Next Publication/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380222325; Hardcover; New; New;
Indian business and industry in the 21st century has witnessed mind boggling changes on account of the opening up of the economy in late 20th century. The onrush of competition from across the Indian shores and the unleashing of the enterprising spirit within the nation changed the business and economic scenario to such a great extent that managing business with the paradigms of the previous century became extremely unfeasible and incompatible. In such a scenario not only the private sector but also the public sector repositioned itself to survive and flourish in a seamless global market.The chapters included in this book mirror this concern with the new reality. They spotlight attention on the attempt of Indian business organisations to reinvent themselves to fulfill their strategic intent and contribute to the overall welfare and well being of each of their stake holders. They also focus attention on the nature of changes that management has undergone in the Indian context, in the specific areas of Human resource, Finance and Marketing. The studies included here show that while the private sector organizations are capitalizing on the liberalized business environment, the public sector companies and corporations too are emerging out of their bureaucratic comfort zones to give the private sector run for money. Some of the studies also look at the changes in the regulatory and policy environment and are more or less eulogistic about them. It is our conviction that this book will act as a window on a new and resilient India Incorporated as compared to the times when business and industry clamored for protection against the opening up of the economy., About the author:- Amit Gupta, Chairman, JIMS, is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce and IIFT. Doctorate in Management from GGS Indraprastha University, he is a member of many Committees of Indraprastha University and holds membership of various national educational associations, namely, National HRD Network, All India Management Association, and Association of Indian Management Schools etc. He was recently selected among 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century by International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England. Guide to Godhood: The Roadmap to Moksha (based on Shramansutram)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121512638; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Moksha—the State of Godhood, is one of the most mystical concepts of the east. It means rise of an ordinary individual from the realms of manhood into the domain of Godhood. It symbolizes the release of soul from the ever repeating cycle of birth and death and assimilation of the same into the souls of previously liberated beings, collectively referred to as “Siddha.” This book, “Guide to Godhood—The Roadmap to Moksha, “breaks open the path to achieve this high state. It’s based on Sutras(verses) of Shraman Theology and divides the journey into Fourteen milestones referred to as “Guna.” Each one of us, irrespective of our beliefs and value system, is stationed at one of these phases (Guna). As a reader reads through the pages of this book, it will not be difficult for him to pin-point the phase at which he is currently stationed. This knowledge of one’s current state of being will not only help him analyze where he stands on the spiritual platform, but will also help him in discovering the reason of his stationing at that particular phase and thus plan remedial actions to break free. The basic idea of this book is to help explain all these phases from a scientific outlook, so a fair idea of the road that lies to Godhood could be achieved. Printed Pages: 217. 037782

Crises and Creativities: Middle Class-Bhadralok in Bengal, C. 1939-52
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125037039; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The 1940s was the decade of crisis and change in Bengal. The years that began with famine, war and devastation ended with rioting, death and mass migration as a land, its people and its soul were partitioned. In the darkness of terrible human tragedy, however, twinkled significant triumphs of human achievement. Bengali intellectualism flourished on either side of Independence, and new landmarks were erected in thought, art and aesthetics. The bhadralok, a multilayered social category comprising educated professionals, translatable literally as ‘gentlemen’ and as ‘middle class’ in socioeconomic terms confronted change with a mix of radicalism and reaction. The loftiness of the resultant intellectual product was in inverse proportion to the drastic fall in the general conditions of life. Littérateurs and artists broke out of the elitism of their predecessors to experiment with new forms, and thinkers and theoreticians adapted the philosophical debates of 20th century Europe to contemporary Indian circumstances. This book is an account of the Bengali bhadralok’s distinctive creative response to historical circumstances that remain without parallel in the rest of India in the years both before and after their passage. It evaluates aesthetic resurgence in socio-economic perspective, following its many twists and turns, and mapping its essentially non-conformist, liberating and egalitarian spirit. It will be of great interest to students of social crisis and cultural change, and everyone seeking to appraise artistic responses to historical realities. Printed Pages: 352. 031444

Perspectives on Consciousness
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121510813; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Consciousness has remained an enigma even after close scientific scrutiny. Last two decades of the twentieth century, therefore, witnessed an explosion of interest in consciousness. Lack of consensus about the nature, definition and taxonomy of consciousness and lack of conviction about the adequacy of the reductive methodology have led scholars from different disciplines to study this multidimensional phenomenon from perspectives of their own. This volume is a collection of essays focusing on ontological, epistemological, semantic and methodological debates from philosophical and scientific perspectives. The issues dealt with here include the following: What is consciousness – a substance, a state or a process? Is consciousness subjective and private? Does ‘consciousness’ mean something unitary and indivisible or is it a cluster concept? What is the hard problem of consciousness and how to solve it? Who will have the last word on consciousness – philosopher, physicist, psychologist or neurobiologist? Is it possible to have a unified theory of consciousness and how to go about it? The unique feature of this volume is the inclusion of articles on classical Indian theories of consciousness analysed from the contemporary point of view by very competent scholars. This collection is meant for both scholars and general readers. Rich information content of the volume will be particularly useful to students and researchers in Philosophy and Consciousness Studies. India and Pakistan: Pathways Ahead
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8187966661; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
India-Pakistan relations are at a historic juncture. This new found warmth, more than mere ‘cold peace’ something that has traditionally characterised the relationship between the two countries has started manifesting in an urge to engage the other country with a positive frame of mind, explore the finer aspects of the other, and impelled an unprecedented popular momentum generated by the expectations of ordinary Indians and Pakistanis. The leadership in both India and Pakistan has not just accepted that they are willing to go beyond their stated positions, but have realised that the welfare of the other is essential to their own. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are also undergoing an attitudinal metamorphosis towards realism and the imperatives of peace, stability and prosperity.Still, much remains unchanged. Mindsets, suspicion, terror tactics and political compulsions created by age-old ‘nationalist’ rhetoric remain potential wild cards in the ongoing process towards positive peace. Thus, much of the challenging journey still lies ahead.Printed Pages: 330. 104452

The End of American World Order
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199458928; Hardcover; New; New;
The age of western hegemony is over. Whether or not America itself is declining, the post-war liberal world order underpinned by US military, economic and ideological primacy and supported by global institutions serving its power and purpose, is coming to an end. But what will take its place? A Chinese world order? A reconstituted form of American hegemony? A regionalized system of global cooperation, including major and emerging powers?In this timely and provocative book, Amitav Acharya offers an incisive answer to this fundamental question. While the US will remain a major force in world affairs, he argues that it has lost the ability to shape world order after its own interests and image. As a result, the US will be one of a number of anchors including emerging powers, regional forces and a concert of the old and new powers shaping a new world order. Rejecting labels such as 'multipolar', 'apolar' or 'G - zero', Acharya likens the emerging system to a multiplex theater, offering a choice of plots (Ideas), directors (Power) and action (Leadership) under one roof. Finally, he reflects on the policies that the US, emerging powers and regional actors must pursue to promote stability in this decentered but interdependent, multiplex world. River of Smoke
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 0143424718; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
In September 1838 a storm blows up on the Indian Ocean and the Ibis, a ship carrying a consignment of convicts and indentured labourers from Calcutta to Mauritius, is caught up in the whirlwind. When the seas settle, five men have disappeared—two lascars, two convicts and one of the passengers. Did the same storm upend the fortunes of those aboard the Anahita, an opium carrier heading towards Canton? And what fate befell those aboard the Redruth, a sturdy two-masted brig heading East out of Cornwall? Was it the storm that altered their course or were the destinies of these passengers at the mercy of even more powerful forces? On the grand scale of an historical epic, River of Smoke follows its storm-tossed characters to the crowded harbours of China. There, despite efforts of the emperor to stop them, ships from Europe and India exchange their cargoes of opium for boxes of tea, silk, porcelain and silver. Among them are Bahram Modi, a wealthy Parsi opium merchant out of Bombay, his estranged half-Chinese son Ah Fatt, the orphaned amateur botanist Paulette and a motley collection of others in pursuit of romance, riches and a legendary rare flower. All struggle to cope with their losses—and, for some, unimaginable freedoms—in the alleys and crowded waterways of nineteenth-century Canton. As transporting and mesmerizing as an opiate induced dream, River of Smoke, book two in Amitav Ghosh’s Ibis trilogy, will soon be heralded as a masterpiece of twenty-first century literature. The Shadow Lines
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0143066560; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
As a boy, Amitav Ghosh’s narrator travels across time, experiencing different worlds, all brought to life by the tales of those around him. Set against a backdrop of war and strife, each story becomes an extension of his life. Through them he traverses the unreliable planes of memory, unmindful of physical, political and chronological borders. But as he grows older, he is haunted by a seemingly random act of violence. Bits and pieces of stories, both half-remembered and imagined, come together in his mind until he arrives at an intricate, interconnected picture of the world where borders and boundaries mean nothing, mere shadow lines that we draw dividing people and nations. Out of a miraculously complex web of memories, relationships and images, Amitav Ghosh builds an intensely vivid, funny and moving story. He questions the meaning of political freedom and the force of nationalism in the modern world. Exposing the idea of the nation state as an illusion, an arbitrary dissection of people, Ghosh reveals the absurd manner in which your home can suddenly become your enemy. Printed Pages: 288. 037853

1455 Amitava Kumar
Husband of a Fanatic
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143031899; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
In the summer of 1999, while the Kargil War was being fought, Amitava Kumar married a Pakistani Muslim. That event led to a process of discovery that made Kumar examine the relationship not only between India and Pakistan but also between Hindus and Muslims inside India. The result is this fiercely personal essay on the idea of the enemy. Written with complete honesty and with no claims to journalistic detachment, this book chronicles the complicity that binds the writer to the rioter. Unlike both the fundamentalists and the secularists, Kumar finds—or makes—utterly human those whom he opposes. More than a travelogue which takes the reader to Wagah, Patna, Bhagalpur, Karachi, Kashmir, and even Johannesburg, this book, then, becomes a portrait of the people the author meets in these places, people dealing with the consequences of the politics of faith. With a writer's eye for detail, Kumar has drawn a map of violence. Informed more by a traveller's sense of observation than a safe, academic moralism, Husband of a Fanatic refuses to monumentalize suffering—instead, it presents tragedy as ordinary, and hence, more difficult to accept easily. In a village beside the Ganges near Bhagalpur, in a psychiatric ward in Srinagar, in a classroom in Ahmedabad ... everywhere that the author goes, the reader is compelled to accompany him on a journey to the heart of hatred. Social and Religious Reform: The Hindus of British India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195677021; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Social and religious reform in colonial India has often been written about without an effort to highlight the wide-ranging debates that affected it. The volume is thus the first work to focus on 'reform' as a disputed concept. It traces the critical contestations around the phenomenon of reform as it affected the largest community of British India--the Hindus. The essays identify major issues within the history of socio-religious reform that grew into passionate public debates. The editor's introduction engages with the key components of these debates and the issues are pr esented through contemporary writings and speeches rarely obtainable now. Part of hte prestigious Debates in Indian History and Society series, this volume would interest scholars, teachers and students of modern Indian history, sociology, and anthropology. Bankim's Hinduism: An Autobiography of Writings by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8178243237; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The great novelist and thinker Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838–94), associated with his famous hymn ‘Vande Mataram’, is sometimes seen as mainly a creator of Hindu nationalist icons. This is unfortunate, for Bankim was an enormously learned man, a deep and subtle thinker. A relatively unknown side of his work comprises his religious and philosophical thought, in particular his carefully argued ideas on Hinduism. This collection of Bankim’s writings—many translated into English for the first time and excerpted from the author’s Complete Works in the Bengali original—brings out some of the inner anxieties and ambivalence within the novelist-intellectual’s work on religion, ethics, and philosophy. By reading this book one may detect in Bankim a rational-functionalist approach to religion, as also a deepening faith and piety transcending that intellectual perspective. Bankim anticipates contemporary scholarship in claiming that Hinduism is the common name given to a variety of religious thoughts and practices; and yet, paradoxically, his writings—all penned in the colonial era of Indian subjecthood—also argue for a common Hindu heritage, as well as a unified religious and cultural world for contemporary Hindus. A substantive Introduction and detailed annotations help to situate Bankim’s life and thought in his times.Printed Pages: 379. 037529

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178222264; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Pollution, corruption, lack of human values, greed, selfishness; natural disasters like earthquakes, storms, volcanic eruptions, extreme weather conditions and viral outbreaks are increasing daily. Visions of Doomsday in 1999 were glimmers of hope and comfort for many! Has Doomsday been postponed to 2012? Are we given a period of Grace to amend our unsustainable lifestyle? Is the Divine Energy of Love and Light amidst us in the form of Sri Sathya Sai Baba to bring us back to the path of Truth, Love, Righteousness, Peace and Non-violence, to usher in the "Golden Age of Peace, Love and Harmony on Earth?" Will this cleansing involve geo-physical and political upheavals of unimaginable proportions? The author, a retired researcher in the medical sciences, examines these questions in the light of our collective ancient wisdom, the teachings of Sai Baba and current scientific revelations. She also offers valuable insights into how we can empower ourselves to lead a healthy and peaceful life.Printed Pages: 294. 102489

Transnational Media and Contoured Markets: Redefining Asian Television and Advertising
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0761934847; First Edition; Paperback; New;
In a world increasingly polarising into media-rich and media-poor nations, the rapid spread of satellite and cable television has triggered a vigorous debate on the globalisation of media and markets. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, media and communications technologies have been converging at an unprecendented pace worldwide. Transnational Media and Contoured Markets brings a multi-faceted perspective to bear on the transformation of the broadcast and advertising industries in Asia at the turn of the century. Drawing on case studies of satellite and cable channels across South, Southeast and Northeast Asia, the author argues that the globalisation of the media and advertising can only be understood within the broader context of economic, political, social and cultural processes within nation states, subnational regions and transborder ethnic communities. Additionally, this book raises the deeper socio-ethical issues of relentless globalisation for developing countries and transnational economies worldwide. Printed Pages: 272. 028910

Rama Janamabhoomi
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8184541562; Hardcover; New; New;
Ever since the demolition of the `Baburi Masjid` at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, we have been swamped with contentious literature on this topic by numerous scholars offering varied perspectives, resulting in division amongst politicians, historians and religious groups. The material presented in this book is based on critical historical analysis and a scientific study of the land rights of Janmasthan versus `Baburi Masjid` and dispels several misleading theories on the said subject.Professor B.R. Grover examined original land revenue documents, maps of Ayodhya, recorded eyewitness accounts of travels to Ayodhya as well as Babur`s Memoirs and other documents and manuscripts available at various libraries in Persian, Arabic, Chaghatay-Turkish, Urdu, Sanskrit, Punjabi and English to arrive at the conclusions presented in this book. Among other things, Professor Grover set the record straight regarding the location of the ancient city of Ayodhya, the exact location of Janamasthan, and the ownership-occupation of the land. He established that the area on which the structure of the `Baburi Masjid` stood is a part of the Janamasthan and that despite the construction of the `mosque` on the Janamasthan site, the Hindus never surrendered their claims of worship at this site all through the centuries.One significant point clarified by Professor Grover is view held by some that the 19th century works of English and Muslim writers on the history of Awadh were biased and based upon the British `Divide-and-Rule` policy. Upon an examination of the revenue documents and judicial records, Professor Grover iterated that the tussle between the Hindus and the Muslims over Janamasthan vs. `Baburi Masjid` existed during the Nawabi period and it was not a creation of the British `Divide-and-Rule` policy. Another significant theory of the All India Baburi Masjid Committee was proved as invalid by him through an examination of Shah Jahan`s original Farman of 3rd July, 1648 that a Muslim masjid once dedicated to Allah cannot be surrendered as temple of another religious community. Based on the documentary evidence, Professor Grover concluded that `...any `masjid` constructed on the premises of a temple can be restored to the original owner-religious community to which it belonged`. This throws a significant light on the present controversy whether a temple can be re-built on the site of the masjid.The documentary evidence presented in this book will, hopefully, set the record straight and dispel the earlier fallacious theories regarding the Ayodhya controversy as well as assist in reducing political and communal discord.
