Jnanagarbha's Commentary on Just the Maitreya Chapter from the Samdhinimocana-Sutra
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8185636370; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The Commentary on Just the Maitreya Chapter from the Samdhinirmocana-sutra, attributed to the Indian Buddhist master Jnanagarbha, is an important work of early Indian Buddhist philosophy. As the title indicates, it focuses on the eighth chapter of the sutra. "The Question of Maitreya," one of the seminal scriptural sources for Indian Buddhist meditation theory. It provides learned commentaries on the doctrines of "calming" (samatha) and "higher insight" (vipasyana), as well as a comprehensive overview of the path to awakening as understood by the Yogcara tradition. In addition, it comments on the sutra's statement that all of the phenomena of experience are "cognition only" (vijnapti-matra), interpreting this as a statement of universal idealism. This commentary contains one of the most detailed philosophical analyses of this important chapter, and it has some of the most thought-provoking exegesis of a text that is one of the most influential of Indian Buddhist scriptures. History as Propaganda: Tibetan Exiles Versus the People's Republic of China
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0195174267; First Paperback Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Despite Chinese efforts to stop foreign countries from granting him visas, the Dalai Lama has become one of the most recognizable and best loved people on the planet, drawing enormous crowds wherever he goes. By contrast, China's charismatically-challenged leaders attract crowds of protestors waving Tibetan flags and shouting "Free Tibet!" whenever they visit foreign countries. By now most Westerners probably think they understand the political situation in Tibet. But, John Powers argues, most Western scholars of Tibet evince a bias in favor of one side or the other in this continuing struggle. Some of the most emotionally charged rhetoric, says Powers, is found in studies of Tibetan history. narratives. Printed Pages: 224 with 13 halftones. 014833

A New Anthropology of Islam
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2012; 1107615755; Softcover; New;
In this powerful but accessible new study John Bowen draws on a full range of work in social anthropology to present Islam in ways that emphasise its constitutive practices from praying and learning to judging and political organising. Starting at the heart of Islam - revelation and learning in Arabic lands - Bowen shows how Muslims have adapted Islamic texts and traditions to ideas and conditions in the societies in which they live. Returning to key case studies in Asia Africa and Western Europe to explore each major domain of Islamic religious and social life Bowen also considers the theoretical advances in social anthropology that have come out of the study of Islam. Land and Local Kingship in Eighteenth-Century Bengal
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2002; 0521410746; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
This book examines the politics and culture of landholding in eastern India. Professor McLane explores the dual and sometimes conflicting roles of the zamindars, the landed chiefs, in eighteenth-century western Bengal during the decline of the Mughal empire and the rise of the British hegemony. He focuses on zamindari rent extraction, techniques of coercion, and the meaning of gift-giving and gift-receiving. He shows how the zamindars kept alive the rituals, patronage, and other traditions of normative Hindu kingship for their subjects in the villages while they extracted revenue from the peasantry and intermediate gentry for the government of the Mughals and then the English East India Company. He argues that the increased commercialization and efforts to maximize land revenues imposed severe strains on the paternalistic and gift-oriented culture of Bengal’s huge landlords. This analysis is illustrated with a case study of Bengal’s most important and controversial zamindari, the Burdwan raj. Contents List of tables; Preface and acknowledgments; List of abbreviations; Select glossary; Map of southwest Bengal; Part I. Bengal: 1. Introduction; 2. Nazims of Bengal and the large zamindars; 3. Collecting rents and revenues; 4. Coercion; 5. Political gifts and patronage; Part II. Burdwan: 6. Meghal Burdwan and the rise of the Burdwan raj; 7. Burdwan’s expansion; 8. The Maratha invasions, 1742–1751; 9. Zamindars and the transition to Company rule; 10. The famine of 1770; 11. Revenue farming, 1771–1777; 12. The Politics of Water Resource Development in India: The Narmada Dams COntroversy
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935657; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is about the politics of water resource development and management in India, with special reference to the Narmada river waters dispute. The author draws on a wealth of studies on Narmada as also his own research to analyse the controversy from the perspective of a political scientist. The author analyses three aspects of the conflict over developing the waters of the Narmada: - The politics of the inter-state river water dispute over Narmada waters in the context of Indian centre-state and inter-state relationships and the constitutional and legal mechanisms for resolving disputes among riparian states. - The Narmada upstream-downstream politics implicit in the battle between downstream Gujarat and Rajasthan versus upstream Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. - The much-publicized struggle between those for and others against the construction of the gigantic Sardar Sarovar dam. Given the highly contentious nature of these struggles, the author objectively highlights how and why the outcomes of such struggles have largely depended on the realities of power. Seven Doors to Islam: Spirituality and the Religious Life of Muslims
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508525; First Indian Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Seven Doors to Islam reveals the religious faith and spiritual tradition of the world's one billion Muslims. Spanning Islamic civilization from Morocco to Indonesia, Seven Doors demonstrates how Muslims have used the literary and visual arts in all their richness and diversity to communicate religious values. Each of the seven chapters opens a "door" that leads progressively closer to the heart of Islam, from the foundational revelation in the Qur'an to the transcendent experience of the Sufi Mystics. Unlike most studies of Islam, which see spirituality as the concern of a minority of mystical seekers, Seven Doors demonstrates spirituality's central role in every aspect of the Islamic religious tradition. Hinduism and its Relations to Christianity (Interfaith Studies Revived: 2)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480136; Reprinted; Hardcover; New; New;
The Author has toiled hard in bringing the vast ocean of information in an easy to read form via this Book. The Book not only presents interaction of the two said faiths but its scrupulously segregated four sections cover: Part I sets forth `Earlier Religions of India' inter-alia encompassing; Earliest Vedic Religion, Brahmanism, and Buddhism. Part II looks into the deep study done by the Author to understand the philosophy and other facets of Hinduism. Part III exhibits inter-relation of Hinduism with Mohammedanism, bringing out the vast age of history when India was conquered by Mohammedans and its effects on Hindus and Hinduism.Part IV meticulously covers the real purpose of the Book, i.e., interconnection between Hinduism and Christianity in terms of their respective Affinities and Antagonisms; Reform Movements in Hinduism including the rise of Arya Samaj and Brahma Samaj vis a vis Position and Attitude of Christianity towards them.The Author has also put forward his thought, that many of the leading religious truths are same in both the stated religions but there is an incredible iniquity in Hinduism that overshadows the efforts of its Reform Movements. Finally, he believed that Christianity and its religious truths have the promising hope for India.This academic's acclaimed Book includes many insightful Appendices; and focuses on subjects like Religion, History, Islamic Studies, Christianity and its Missions. The Author's research will equally prove to be useful for Historians, Ethnologists, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Missionaries, Mosque Leaders, Students and Researchers.Printed Pages: 286. 106428

The Three Boys and Other Buddhist Folktales from Tibet
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178223511; First Edition; Softcover; New;
A virtuous young woman journeys to the land of the Dead to retrieve the still-beating heart of a king; a wily corpse-monster tricks his young captor into setting him free, the king falls under a curse that turns him into a cannibal; a shepherd who understands the speech of animals, saves a princess from certain death. These are just a few of the wondrous tales that await readers of this collection of Tibetan Buddhist Folktales. Fifteen stories are told for modern readers in a vivid, accessible style that reflects a centuries-old tradition of story telling in the monasteries and marketplaces of Tibet. As a child growing up in a Buddhist monastery, Yeshi Dorjee would often coax the elderly lamas into telling him folktales. By turns thrilling, mysterious, clever, and often hilariously funny, the stories he narrates here also teach important lessons about mindfulness, compassion, and other key Buddhist principles. They will delight readers of all ages, scholars and students, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.Printed Pages: 223. 102419

Songs of the Saints of India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0195694201; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
'We have waited long for an anthology of Hindi bhakti of this range, authority, and literary excellence.' -- A K Ramanujan 'The author's deep knowledge of the bhakti traditions of north India is evident both in their choice of representative poetry for each of the six saints and in the renderings of their poetry, which are so skilfully fashioned that one can easily hear the nuances of each poet's voice in registers of contemporary English.' -- The Journal of Asian Studies 'This is one of those rare and wonderful books that makes first-rate scholarship immediately accessible to the non-specialist.' --Religious Studies Review This book presents the life stories and poems of six well-known saint-poets of north India Ravidas, Kabir, Nanak, Surdas, Mirabai, and Tulsidas who have contributed more to the religious vocabulary of Hinduism in north India today than any voices before or since. In worship, in education, even in politics, modern Hinduism sings their tune. With a biographical and interpretive essay on each poet and a selection of representative verses in original translation, this book offers a complete introduction to a literature that transcends the boundaries we associate with religion, and those of India as well. This new edition of the Songs of the Saints of India will appeal to travellers, students, and anyone eager to hear the music of north Indian religion and see its hidden contours. Advaita Vedanta Re-explored towards Ecological and Dalit Theology (Interfaith Treasures Uncovered: 4)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480334; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book attempts to develop Indian Christian Liberation theologies, i.e., Eco-theology and Dalit theology, based on the insights gained from the study of Relation in Sankara's Advaita Vedanta and carries forward the work done by K. P. Aleaz and Richard De Smet. Sankara through his integral God-World/Human relation provides an epistemological as well as a theological basis for Eco-theology and Dalit theology in the context of ecological liberation and the ongoing struggles of Dalit Identity and liberation. The sanctity of Earth as well as the equality of humankind is presented in this book through Sakara's thoughts. The God-World relation insights in Sankara's thought backs Eco-theology and provides the wider green movements with a comprehensive vision. It also enable us to remove all hierarchy in the social order and antagonism based on caste, culture and religion.The book affirms that a dialogical relationship and a relational convergence between `Vedantic' theology and Indian Christian theology is made possible in terms of developing Indian Christian Liberation theologies through Sankara's integral God-World/Human relation. This book is a must read for students of Indian philosophy, Christian liberation theology, and for those who are involved in building a Society that will contribute towards removing the antagonistic social order.Printed Pages: 215. 106391

Skillful Means: The Heart of Buddhsit Compassion (Buddhist Tradition Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8120819993; Hardcover; New; New;
This book provides a new way of understanding Buddhist thought. He argues that Buddhism is best understood as a philosophy of practice-or a metapraxis-and that terms such as emptiness non self, and nirvana refer less to metaphysical principles than to skillful teachings that help people cultivate compassion and mindfulness. Each section of the book focuses on a debate over philosophical justification and the problem of trying to establish a fixed doctrine in Buddhist and reveals an on-going debate.Printed Pages: 193. 102408

A History of Nepal
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 0521671418; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Nepal emerged as a unified state over two hundred years ago, centred on the Kathmandu Valley with its two thousand years of urban civilisation. While John Whelpton’s history focuses on the period since the overthrow of the Rana family autocracy in 1950–51, the early chapters are devoted to the origins of the kingdom and the evolving relations of its diverse peoples. By drawing on recent research on Nepal’s environment, society and political institutions, the author portrays a country of extraordinary contrasts, whose history has been constantly buffeted by its neighbours, China and India. Economic and political turmoil over the last fifty years came to a climax in the massacre of the royal family in 2001, when the country erupted into civil war. The book represents the first English-language history of Nepal in one volume. Its comprehensive and accessible approach will appeal to students, professionals and those visiting the region. Contents Introduction 1. Environment, state and society in the central Himalayas to 1743 2. Unification and Sanskritisation, 1743–1885 3. Nepal under the Shamsher Ranas, 1885–1951 4. The monarchy in ascendance: domestic politics and foreign relations, 1951–91 5. The quest for ‘development’: economy and environment, 1951–91 6. Shabdartharatna of Taranatha Tarkavacaspati (A Critical Study with English Translation)
Pratibha Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2013; 8177022660; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This reasearch study on Shabdartharatna of Taranatha Tarkavacaspati includes the critical edition as well as an English translation of the text and a focused critical analysis of the text. Along with an introduction to the work and its author this study deals with the linguistic concept of shabdartha. The text is subdivided into small units on the basis of logical division of the topic considered and each unit has been numbered separately for easy reference. For a better understanding of the text, the translation is invariably followed by explanatory notes. As the philosophic glances move from one side to the other, newer relations are discovered and the ‘linguistic-glance’ of the ÝabdŒrtharatna (the yathartha elements) is turned into ‘lingo-scriptural glance’ (tattvartha elements) for fresh insights. Just as one moves from the import of words to the import of sentences in liguistic philosophy, here the import of sentences are further moved or transcended to the import of scriptures and, thus, the language of heremeneutics is coverted into a language of scriptural hermeneutics.Printed Pages: 566. 101307

Evolution of Nervous Systems, 4 Vols.
Elsevier; New York, USA; 2006; 0123925606; First Edition; Hardcover; New;
All biology only makes sense when seen in the light of evolution, and this is especially true for the nervous system. All animals have nervous systems that mediate their behaviors, many of them species specific. Yet, these nervous systems all evolved from the simple nervous system of a common ancestor. To understand these nervous systems, we need to know how they vary and how this variation emerged in evolution. Over 100 distinguished neuroscientists have assembled, for the first time, the current state-of-the-art knowledge on how nervous systems evolved throughout the animal kingdom. This four-volume overview is rich in detail and broad in scope, and outlines the changes in brain and nervous system organization that occurred from the first vertebrates to present day fishes, reptiles, birds, mammals, and especially primates, including humans. The basic principles of brain evolution are discussed, as well as mechanisms of change, which involved gene expression and altered the courses of embryonic development. The reader can select from chapters on highly specific topics as well as those providing an overview of current thinking and approaches. This unique major reference promises to become the gold standard for those interested in evolution and in nervous systems. Also available online via ScienceDirect (2006) – featuring extensive browsing, searching, and internal cross-referencing between articles in the work, plus dynamic linking to journal articles and abstract databases, making navigation flexible and easy. A Concise History of Modern Architecture in India
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178243059; First Edition; Paperback; New; 19 x 25 Cm
This is an invaluable book for those who want to understand the geography of their cities, as well as for students of Indian architecture. In lucid language that speaks to laymen and architects alike, Jon Lang provides a history of Indian architecture in the twentieth century. He analyses its tangled developments from the founding of the Indian Institute of Architects during the 1920s to the present diversity of architectural directions. He describes the often contradictory tugs of the international and the local as he reviews architects’ efforts to be up-to-date in their work. Lang examines the early influences on Indian architecture both of movements like the Bauhaus as well as prominent individuals like Habib Rehman, Jawaharlal Nehru, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. He looks at monuments, museums, resettlement colonies, housing, offices and movie halls all over India in his wide-ranging survey. Over 150 photographs and line drawings explain and illustrate concepts outlined in the text.Printed Pages: 214. 032356
