Äiti, emäntä, virkanainen, Vartija: Köyhäintalojen johtajattaret ja yhteiskunnallinen äitiys 1880-1918
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2011; 9522223042; New;
Participating in Explanatory Dialogues: Interpreting and Responding to Questions in Context
The MIT Press; Cambridge, Massachussets, USA; 1995; 0262133016; First Edition; Hard Cover; Fine; Fine; 18.5 Cms x 24 Cms
While much has been written about the areas of text generation, text planning, discourse modeling, and user modeling, Johanna Moore's book is one of the first to tackle modeling the complex dynamics of explanatory dialogues. It describes an explanation-planning architecture that enables a computational system to participate in an interactive dialogue with its users, focusing on the knowledge structures that a system must build in order to elaborate or clarify prior utterances, or to answer follow-up questions in the context of an ongoing dialogue. Moore develops a model of explanation generation and describes a fully implemented natural-language system that is embedded in an existing expert system and that includes a generation component. Her main thesis is that shallow approaches to explanation such as paraphrasing the expert system's line of reasoning or filling in an explanation "schema" are not adequate for supporting dialogue, and that a more flexible approach is needed, one that is adaptive to context, aware of what is being said, and of what has gone before in the user's dialogue with the expert system. She argues that the problem with prior approaches is that they do not provide a representation of the intended effects of the components of an explanation, nor how these intentions are related to one another or to the rhetorical structure of the text. She proposes a computational solution to the question of how explanations can be synthesized in such a way that a system can later reason about the explanations it has produced to affect its subsequent utterances. Alastomuuden Oikeutus
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2008; 9517469764; New;
Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan erilaisia tapoja tuottaa alastonvalokuviin niitä puoltaneita ihanteita.
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2010; 9514261003; New;
Suomen asutun alueen kokonaispinta-ala on pienentynyt kahdeksan prosenttia vuosina 1970–2007. Samanaikaisesti väestömäärä on kasvanut 15 prosenttia, mikä on johtanut väestöntiheyden kohoamiseen. Maaseudun väestömäärä on pienentynyt noin 33 prosenttia. Tiheään asuttujen taajama-alueiden väestömäärä on kasvanut 42 prosenttia vuosina 1970–2007. Maaseutu- ja taajama-alueiden aluerakenteen kehitystrendit osoittavat, että harvaan asuttujen alueiden asutus ohenee myös tulevaisuudessa, mikä johtaa väistämättä joidenkin maaseutumaisten alueiden autioitumiseen. 115235

Kartanot, kapiot, Rykmentit: Erään aatelissuvun elämäntapa 1700-luvun Ruotsissa
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2011; 952222264X; New;
Printed Pages: 524. 115565

Meän tapa Puhua: Tornionlaakso pellolaisnuorten subjektiivisena paikkana ja Murrealueena
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2009; 9522221007; New;
Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan yhtä abiturienttivuosikertaa edustavien pellolaisten samaistumista kotiseutuunsa ja heidän alueellisen identiteettinsä rakentumista murteen käytön ja murretietoisuuden kautta. Murteen käyttöä, kielitietoisuutta ja tapoja puhua kielellisestä identiteetistä peilataan eroihin, joita tutkimuksessa ilmenee nuorten ympäristösuhteissa. Yksilölliset erot murteellisuudessa näyttävät kytkeytyvän eroihin alueellisessa samaistumisessa. Uutta tietoa on, että ”h:n päältä puhuvien” tornionlaaksolaisten kielitaju ulottuu erottamaan tornionlaaksolaiset h:t muualla esiintyvistä h-muodoista. Printed Pages: 304. 116278

Focus on Form J.J. Tikkanen, Giotto and Art Research in the 19th Century
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2007; 951905765X; New;
This study is on Johan Jakob Tikkanen (1857-1930), the first professor of art history in Finland, and his significance and methods in the context of late 19th and early 20th-century European art history. Tikkanen was one of the pioneering scholars in the field of medieval art research, and one of the scholars who defined art history as an independent academic discipline. Tikkanen was profoundly interested in artistic creativity. In his own words, he wanted to study das künstlerische Können, artistic ability, instead of das künstlerische Wollen or artistic will. This starting point led him to the history of style and iconographical research. Printed Pages: 192. 114303

Svenskt, finskt och Ryskt
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2014; 9515831903; New;
Printed Pages: 217. 115477

Gården vid Kanalen: Strömma gårds Historia
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9515832632; New;

Maatalouden tutkimuskeskuksesta tuli käytännössä ennakkotapaus, jossa vastaavien siirtojen vaikutukset tulevat näkyviin monin eri tavoin. Ongelmia tuottivat henkilökohtaista tapaamista edellyttävien kontaktien ylläpitäminen, muuttoprosessin pitkittyminen ja sen henkilöstössä synnyttämä epävarmuus, sekä yksilötasolla siirron kohteeksi joutuvien oman elämän hallintaan liittyvät kysymykset. The Hidden Way: A Study in Modern Religious Esoterism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121510554; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The purpose of the present study is to present Swami Narayanananda as a prototype of a modern successful guru, who in his twilight language seems to be offering a definite kind of synthesis of all religions. Narayanananda, however, cannot be studied in isolation. He has to be studied in concreto within the movement of guruism. This single guru can be seen as a focus for the general movement of New Age which has taken the whole world by surprise. There is much more to be said, not least about the parallel movements within and out of Buddhism, which has its own esoteric and occult experiences. Printed Pages: 164. 000180

Buddhist Teaching in India
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2010; 0861715667; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Abhidhamma, the third great division of early Buddhist teaching, expounds a revolutionary system of philosophical psychology rooted in the twin Buddhist insights of selflessness and dependent origination. In keeping with the liberative thrust of early Buddhism, this system organizes the entire spectrum of human consciousness around the two poles of Buddhist doctrine—bondage and liberation, Samsara and Nirvana—the starting point and the final goal. It thereby maps out, with remarkable rigour and precision, the inner landscape of the mind to be crossed through the practical work of Buddhist meditation. In this book of groundbreaking essays, Venerable Nyanaponika Thera, one of our age's foremost exponents of Theravada Buddhism, attempts to penetrate beneath the formidable face of the Abhidhamma and to make its principles intelligible to the thoughtful reader of today. His point of focus is the Consciousness Chapter of the Dhammasangani, the first treatise of the Abhidhamma Pitaka. Basing himself on the detailed list of mental factors that the Abhidhamma uses as a guide to psychological analysis, he launches into bold explorations in the multiple dimensions of conditionality, the nature of consciousness, the temporality of experience, and the psychological springs of spiritual transformation. Innovative and rich in insights, this book does not merely open up new avenues in the academic study of early Buddhism. By treating the Abhidhamma as a fountainhead of inspiration for philosophical and psychological inquiry, it demonstrates the continuing relevance of Buddhist thought to our most astute contemporary efforts to understand the elusive yet so intimate nature of the mind. Dan Goleman, celebrated author of Emotional Intelligence, in recommending this classic book, says that his former teacher, Venerable Nyanaponika Thera, was "one of the most profound and lucid interpreters of Buddhist psychology in our time." Greater Magadha: Studies in the Cultures of Early India
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120835344; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Greater Magadha, roughly the eastern part of the Gangetic plain of northern India, has so far been looked upon as deeply indebted to Brahmanical culture. Religions such as Buddhism and Jainism are thought of as derived, in one way or another, from Vedic religion. This belief is defective in various respects. The book argues for the importance and independence of Greater Magadha as a cultural area until a date close to the beginning of the Common Era. In order to correct the incorrect notions, two types of questions are dealt with: questions pertaining to cultural and religious dependencies, and questions relating to chronology. As a result a modified picture arises that also has a bearing on the further development of Indian culture. The book is arranged in five parts. Part-I describes cultural features of Greater Magadha, under which there are three chapters-The Fundamental Spiritual Ideology, Other Features and Conclusions. Part-II: Brahmanism vis-a-vis Rebirth and Karmic Retribution has three sections- Hesitantly Accepted, Rebirth and Karmic Retribution Ignored or Rejected, and Urban Brahmins. Under section one there are chapters onó Dharma Sutra, a portion from the Mahabharata and the early Upanisads. Section two features chapters on Rebirth and Karmic Retribution Ignored and Rebirth and Karmic Retribution Rejected. Section three is on urban Brahmins.Printed Pages: 433. 102519

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834720; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The chapter in this volume are a selection of papers presented in the general Philosophy Section at the 12th World Sanskrit Conference in Helsinki, Finland. The first part of the book, Studies in Indian Philosophy, contains nine studies on individual topics and concepts in Indian philosophy from various perspectives: historical-philological, philosophical and comparative. They are inter alia concerned with such fundamental issues as the characteristic signs of the Self, the concept of vijnaptimatrata in Vasubandhu's Yogacara, the notion of unchanging cognition in the writings of the Kashmirian author Ramakantha, the definition of existence according to the late Buddhist philosopher Jnanasrimitra, and the significance of the sadhana catustaya in Vedanta. In the second part of the book, two papers contribute to the study of the textual history of Indian philosophy, with a focus on the Patanjalayogasastra and Candrananda's commentary on the Vaisesikasutra.Printed Pages: 182. 102081

Modersmålets Sånger
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2015; 951583340X; New;
Printed Pages: 289. 114759

Landlords and Property: Social Relations in the Private Rented Sector
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521360285; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; Fine; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
The issue of private landlordism in Britain touches a raw political nerve. There is no shortage of prescription as to what should be done with the rented housing market and private landlords. Yet surprisingly little is known about the structure and diversity of private landlordism and the variety of private tenants’ housing needs - a prerequisite for policy intervention. This book provides an anatomy of the nature of private landlordism in the 1980s, the types of landlord in the market, the scope of their activities, and the choices and constraints that guide their actions in the market. It shows how the pattern of change in the private rented sector has been not one of straightforward decline, but one of structural unevenness shaped by a combination of three general processes - disinvestment, investment and informalization - which vary in impact from place to place. Adopting a realist methodological approach, the authors attempt to capture both the general characterisation of landlordism and the processes shaping the private rental sector and their diverse geographical form across space and through time. This approach is illustrated by an extensive and inrenting in two local housing markets in inner London. Finally, the authors examine the scope for change in the private rented sector and argue for a combination of public and private initiatives that is sensitive to the differences among local housing markets and that relates to the demands/needs of those groups at present dependent on private renting for accommodation. Contents List of figures and tables; Preface; 1. Introduction; 2. private landlords: the anatomy of uneven decline; 3. The structure of private landlordism; 4. Research design and methods; 5. landlords in profile: an intensive survey; 6. Landlords in the inner city: an extensive survey; 7. Political ideologies and private rental policies; Policy postscripts; Appendix; References; Index. Printed Pages: 224. 006821

The Geology of Building Stones
Donhead Publishing Ltd; Dorset, UK; 2001; 1873394527; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; Brand New; 14 x 20 Cm
John Allen Howe’s book, The Geology of Building Stones, written in 1910, was the first major reference work to feature information on the considerable range of building stones which were being used in the UK and which were still being quarried at that time. This important and useful publication, now reprinted by Donhead, offers very detailed information on the appearance and qualities of the various types of stone being used at that time, including granite, sandstones, limestones and other lesser known building stones, specific to certain geographical areas. It also includes a good introduction to the effects of stone decay, in particular the problems of pollution, frost and organic growth in the breakdown of stone. His chapter on testing of stone was very much ahead of its time, since nearly a century later Britain is only now starting to obtain its first standard tests for building stone, in the form of European Standards. This book will be a valuable source of reference for conservators, architects, surveyors, engineers and anyone seeking to identify stone in old or historic buildings. A History of Air Warfare
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380177151; Hardcover; New; New;
This one-volume anthology provides a comprehensive analysis of the role that air power has played in military conflicts over the past century. Comprising sixteen essays penned by a global cadre of leading military experts, A History of Air Warfare chronologically examines the utility of air power from the First World War to the second Lebanon war, campaign by campaign.Each essay lays out the objectives, events, and key players of the conflict in question, reviews the role of air power in the strategic and operational contexts, and explores the interplay between the political framework and military operations proper. The concluding section offers wider perspectives by focusing on air and space power in both unconventional and conventional warfare from 1913 to the present. More than a simple homage to air power, A History of Air Warfare exposes air power’s strengths and weaknesses and, where relevant, illuminates the challenges of joint operations and coalition warfare. Because of its critical approach, even treatment, and historical background, the book will appeal to modern warfare scholars, air power specialists, and general readers interested in military history alike.Printed Pages: 506. 103287

Starting to Collect Antique Furniture
Antique Collectors Club; Suffolk, UK; 2007; 1851494499; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 240 x 190 Mm
Furniture is a prime interest of most antique collectors, but few books attempt to give the beginner an overall view of the history and development of furniture design. This book, structured chronologically and then by country within each time period, starts with the primary medieval period and follows right through the dominance of successive Italian, French and English influences up to 1900. In identifying, describing and illustrating those major fashions and styles whose originals were copied and adapted from country to country over at least two centuries, the author has used his well-proven research and experience to explain an apparently confusing subject with the clarity for which his other books are celebrated. The way in which he shows how so-called national styles are related to neighbouring and even distant originals in other countries makes this history of antique furniture a fascinating and illuminating read as well as a handy and portable reference. This copiously illustrated book covers all the principal European countries and the United States of America in a simple, easily-digested form which shows all the major design features necessary for the understanding of many furniture styles. Never before has such a comprehensive survey been published in so workmanlike yet so concise a form. Practical and compendious, it will serve as a primer for beginners as well as an aide-mémoire for experienced collectors. Printed Pages: 192 with colour illustrations throughout. 017861

British Antique Furniture: Price Guide and Reasons for Values
Antique Collectors Club; Suffolk, UK; 2007; 1851494448; Fifth Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 295 x 237 Mm
For the past thirty years this book has, in its various editions, outsold all others on British antique furniture simply because it is unique in explaining what to look for when assessing the value of individual pieces. In this, the fifth edition, the huge financial importance of patination and colour has been explained and illustrated – something which has become increasingly important in recent years. This classic guide consists of some 1,200 photographs of furniture found in shops and auction rooms throughout the country with the author’s down-to-earth comments on important features which affect individual prices. The reader will come to understand the rules and prejudices which apply while the eye will become aware of gradations of quality. He will come instinctively to assess the workmanship and how all this affects the final price tag. This is, above all, a reference book for the practising collector and dealer, a work from which the memory may be refreshed and points checked. Each item is clearly referenced. This enables the annual price revision list to be compiled with a ready cross-reference. The list is available in January/February each year on a private subscription basis and details are contained within the book. “John Andrews has an encyclopaedic knowledge of antiques and history, qualifications for writing the first of the longest-running of the antique price guides” Sunday Telegraph * The best-selling guide to British antique furniture for over thirty years, now in its fifth edition * Explains in plain language what to look for when assessing value * Over 1,250 superb photographs show just how and why values can vary so greatly * Colour plates show the financial importance of patination * Contains revised prices in both £ Sterling and US $ Printed Pages: 432 with 137 coloured and 1150 b/w illustrations. 017862

The Meanings of Death
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 1993; 0521447739; First Edition; Paperback; New;
In The Meanings of Death, John Bowker offers a major contribution to debates about the value of death and its place in both Western and Eastern religions. Examining the themes of friendship and sacrifice in the world’s major religions, Bowker argues that there are points of vital contact with secular understandings of death, and that religious and secular attitudes can support and reinforce one another. An affirmative recovery of the value of death is important in our response to bereavement, and in the treatment of the terminally ill. By indicating how value can be maintained at the limit of life, without a search for illusory compensation in an afterlife beyond it, Bowker enriches our experience and understanding of the ‘final question’ in a way which is always sensitive and often moving. Handbook of Water Resources in India: Development, Management, and Strategies: The World Bank
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 97870195685619; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
India, with a large agricultural base, growing requirements in cities, and a fast emerging economy, requires careful management of its resources. Water resources, especially those that sustain life, need to be developed and managed efficiently. This handbook focuses on major water policy issues in India. It examines the evolution of India's water management, discusses the achievements of the past, and anticipates future challenges. The volume explores the relationship of water with economic growth, poverty, environment, energy, and rights and entitlements. It analyses appropriate policies and financing for water-related projects in India and recommends methods to manage the transition from past practices in a principled yet pragmatic manner. The handbook also addresses the debate on scaling up of infrastructure and future strategies on pricing and its regulation. 019724

Battle, Bards and Brahmins (Papers of the 13th World Sanskrit Conference Volume 2)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120836049; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume, the second in the Proceedings of the 13th World Sanskrit Conference (Edinburgh, July 2006), reflects the continued increase in interest in the Sanskrit epics seen in recent years, containing no less than 19 articles (a larger number than in the corresponding volume from the 12th WSC at Helsinki) by a number of distinguished scholars in the section devoted to the Sanskrit epics. The great majority of the articles focus on the Mahabharata but several focus on the Ramayana, as well as one on the Harivamua. The variety of approaches adopted by their authors underlines the vitality of this area of research and collectively these articles make a major contribution to our understanding of the history of these massive works, their relationship to each other and their place in the total field of Sanskrit literature and indeed of Indian literature and culture as a whole. The articles are grouped according to the text that they are mainly focussing on (in the order Mahabharata, Harivamsa, Ramayana) and within that in an order which seeks to bring related topics together, beginning with the genealogical issues that underpin all of the narrative in each of the texts and ending with the study of a retelling of one of them, the Anandaramayana. The editor has ensured a degree of uniformity of appearance and of bibliographic reference but had no wish to rein in the diversity of expression and approach to be found in the feast of articles here assembled.Printed Pages: 473. 102047

Bombay in the Days of Queen Anne: Being an account of the settlement and Burnell's Narrative of his Adventures in Bengal
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121507758; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Burnell's description of Bombay takes the form of two letters to his father. The first one is dated 12 May, 1710 and second one is undated. Bombay that Burnell knew had much deteriorated from the dissensions between the Old and New East India Companies. The union had taken place in 1709 and its beneficial effect can scarcely have been felt in Bombay in the following year 1710 when Burnell served there. Burnell in this narrative gives an account of the government then; account of the troops in Bombay; account of the Dongrey Fort which he commanded; plan to convert Bombay from seven islands to one; description of castles and various outlying forts. Burnell is accurate also in his observance of the daily life of Bombay; of the methods of fisherman in the harbour; of the ways in which the land was prepared in the hot weather and early monsoons for rice; and of the salt works along the eastern shore of Island where he noted the technicalities of the whole process, revealing him as a good exponent of popular sciences. Part II narrates his personal adventures in Bengal, where he arrived in November 1712, after being cashiered at Madras. Though incomplete, it has several features of value, especially his description of Danish and Dutch settlements and of Hugli, with its suburbs of Bandel. John Burnell's narratives are simple in style and his presentation of facts and comments are straightforward, giving a wealth of details along with accurate measurements and correct topographical descriptions.
