15001 Jon Platania
Jung for Beginners
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8125031677; Reprint; Paperback; New; Joe Lee
Carl Gustav Jung merged Eastern mysticism with Western psychology, brought scientific respectability to religion, laid the foundation for 'the New Age', and is second only to Freud in influence and importance. So it is easy to see why some people consider him a genius. But others... Put it this way: Some people are so good that all we can do is look up to them. He was a great man who made great mistakes. The two most (in) famous events in Jung's life were his break with Freud and his sojourn with the Nazis. Most books on Jung minimize his Nazi period. Author and psychologist Jon Plantania, finds nazism too hideous to minimize, so he tells this part of the story without pulling any punches Platania then takes us on a tour to the work that made Jung one fo the Pillars of modern psychology. And what a body of work it is! Jung's open-mindedness was astonishing Wherever he went - Calcutta, Egypt, Palestine, Kenya - Jung learned something that expanded his views. His open-ended psychology incorporated yoga, meditation, prayer, alchemy, mythology, astrology, numerology, the I ching - even flying saucers! he taught us that psychology and religion can not only coexist peacefully together, but that thet can enhance us, inspire us, and help us complete ourselves. Truth, Tie and Advertising: The Art of Account Planning
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8126520949; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This book describes the discipline of account planning, which combines 4 traditionally discrete areas of advertising and marketing that Steel defines as "part researcher, part account person, part creative, and surrogate consumer." What this really combines is (1) knowledge of the client's business (traditionally handled by the client itself and the Account Executive), (2) the ad agency's creative skills (traditionally handled by the agency Creative Department -- the Copywriter and the Art Director), and (3) research into what the consumer wants--at every stage of the development of an advertising campaign (traditionally handled by the agency's Research Department). Account Planning seeks to integrate these disciplines in order to produce better, more effective ads that will ultimately appeal more to the consumer and sell more of the client's product.Printed Pages: 320. 104938

Isma’ili Modern: Globalization and Identity in a Muslim Community
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121512549; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
The Isma’ ili Muslims, a major sect of Shi’i Islam, from a community that is intriguing in its deterritorialized social organization. Informed by the richness of Isma’ili history,theories of transnationalism and globalization, and firsthand ethnographic fieldwork in the Himalayan regions of Tajikistan and Pakistan as well as in Europe, Jonah Steinberg investigates Isma’ili Muslims and the development of their remarkable and expansive twenty-first-century global structures. Led by a charismatic European-based hereditary imam, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, global Isma’ili organizations make available an astonishing array of services—social, economic , political, and religious—to some three to five million subjects stretching from Afghanistan to England, from Pakistan to Tanzania. Steinberg argues that this intricate and highly integrated network enables a new kind of shared identity and citizenship, one that goes well beyond the sense of community maintained by other diasporic populations. Of note in this process is the rapid assimilation in the postcolonial period of once-isolated societies into the intensively centralized Isma’ili structure. Also remarkable is the Isma’ili’ self-presentation, contrary to common characterizations of Islam in the mass media, as a Muslim society that is broadly sympathetic to capitalist systems, opposed to fundamentalism, and distinctly modern in orientation. Steinberg’s unique journey into remote mountain regions highlights today’s rapidly shifting meanings of citizenship, faith, and identity and reveals their global scale. Printed Pages: 247. 037629

The Origin of Tara Tantra (Third Edition)
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8186470662; Third Edition; Softcover; New;
Is one of the most accomplished scholars of the unorthodox Jo-nan sect, strings together from various fragmentary sources a mine of legends and episodes on the origin and diffusion of Tara's tantra. The Origin of Tara tantra, though not dependent on legends and largely anecdotal, has nevertheless about it a strong feeling of historic time and provides an important and accurate account of the lineages of the Siddhas who worshipped Tara and passed on her Upadesas, revelations and Tantra besides giving a background to the masters of the Tibetan Siddhas who grew from India's rich tantric soil.Printed Pages: 155. 103564

The Seven Instruction Lineages
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8186470654; Softcover; New;
In the present work, Taranatha paints a miraculous picture of the great Siddhas of India-their lives and the lineages which sprang from their Teachings. In all, the lives of some 59 Siddhas are related-some well known, Others more obscure, but all linked by their various lineages and by the instructions handed down from Siddha to disciple. Taranatha's account of these remarkable lives is especially valuable as he had as his gurus, and as the sources of these accounts, three Indians from the very traditions about which he wrote with such conviction.The lineage accounts are very important for A Clear understanding of the Tantric upadesas themselves. In several places Taranatha makes quite sure that his own lineage is irrefutably established so that there is No Doubt that he is a participator in the upadesas themselves, not merely a hander down of legends. The accounts were evidently passed on and, due to the special factors involved in the tantric oral tradition, we cannot but understand them as being accurate and reliable.Printed Pages: 183. 103572

Artha Meaning
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8120841220; Softcover; New;
A word has the power to stand for an object. And the capacity to understand words gives people the power to acquire knowledge. This relationhip between a semantic and an epistemic power has been a core concern for Indian philosophers of language down the ages. In this second volume in the foundations of philosophy in India series (the first was CIT: Consciousness by Bina Gupta), Jonardon Ganeri, examines theories of meaning or artha. He discusses approaches in different schools of thoguht: Grammarian, Mimamsika, Buddhist, early Naiyayika, Navya Naiyayika, and Vedantian, highlighting the significant relationhip between "word" and "meaning/knowledge/knowing". Riven By Lust: Incest and Schism in Indian Buddhist Legend and Historiography
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8121512034; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Riven by Lust explores the tale of a man accused of causing the fundamental schism in early Indian Buddhism, but not before he has sex with his mother and kills his father. In tracing this Indian Buddhist Oedipal tale, Jonathan Silk follows it through texts in all of the major canonical languages of Buddhism, Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese, and Japanese, along the way noting parallels and contrasts with classical and medieval European stories such as the legend of the Oedipal Judas. Simultaneously, he investigates the psychological and anthropological understandings of the tale of mother-son incest in light of contemporary psychological and anthropological understandings of incest, with special attention to the question of why we consider it among the worst of crimes. In seeking to understand how the story worked in Indian texts and for Indian audiences—as well as how it might work for modern readers—this book has both horizontal and vertical dimensions, probing the place of the Oedipal in Indian culture, Buddhist and non-Buddhist, and simultaneously framing the Indian Oedipal within broader human concerns, thereby contributing to the study of the history of Buddhism, the transmission of narratives in the ancient world, and the fundamental nature of one aspect of human sexuality. Starting from a brief reference in a polemical treatise, Riven by Lust demonstrates that its authors borrowed and intentionally adapted a preexisting story of an Oedipal antihero. This recasting allowed them to calumniate their opponents in the strongest possible terms through the rhetoric of murder and incest. Silk draws on a wide variety of sources to demonstrate the range of thinking about incest in Indian Buddhist culture, thereby uncovering the strategies and working methods of the ancient polemicists. He argues that Indian Buddhists and Hindus, while occupying the same world for the most part, thought differently about fundamental issues such as incest, and hints at the consequent necessity of a reappraisal of our notions of the shape of the ancient cultural sphere they shared. Provocative and innovative, Riven by Lust is a paradigmatic analysis of a major theme of world mythology and a signal contribution to the study of the history of incest and comparative sexualities. It will attract readers interested in Buddhism, Indian studies, Asian studies, comparative culture, mythology, psychology, and the history of sexuality. Printed Pages: 365. 026925

The Silk Road: A Biography (From Prehistory to the Present Day)
Speaking Tiger Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789385755040; Softcover; New;
"The Silk Road is not a place, but a journey, a route from the edges of the Mediterranean to the central plains of China, through high mountains and inhospitable deserts. For thousands of years its history has been a traveller?s history, of brief encounters in desert towns, snowbound passes and nameless forts. It was the conduit that first brought Buddhism, Christianity and Islam into China, and the site of much of the ?Great Game? between nineteenth-century empires. Today, its central section encompasses several former Soviet republics, and the Chinese Autonomous Region of Xinjiang. The ancient trade route controversially crosses the sites of several forgotten kingdoms, buried in sand and only now revealing their secrets. The Silk Road - A Biography not only offers the reader a chronological outline of the region's development, but also provides an invaluable introduction to its languages, literature and arts. It takes a comprehensive and illuminating look at the rich history of this dynamic and little-known region, and provides an easy-to-use reference source. Clements pays particular attention to the fascinating historical sites which feature on any visitor?s itinerary and special emphasis is also given to the writings and reactions of travellers through the centuries. Mao Zedong: A Biography
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184952295; Softcover; New;
The life of Mao Zedong who became ruler of the world’s most populous nation is one of the most remarkable stories of the 20th century.His leadership of the communist revolution and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, after two decades of civil war and Japanese invasion, earned him the title of Chairman Mao and the Great Leader.His launch of rapid and extensive collectivisation and industrialisation in his second Five Year Plan, known as the Great Leap Forward, had catastrophic repercussions for millions in rural China, and the Cultural Revolution that he instigated in the sixties led directly to the destruction of a large part of the country’s cultural heritage. But he remained untouched by the turmoil around him, protected by the formidable cult he had created and by his ruthless elimination of political rivals. Alternately glorified and demonised, he is still regarded as one of the most important figures in modern world history.Printed Pages: 224. 105427

Ahimsa: The Way to Peace (Rediscovering Gandhi), Volume 2
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8180694682; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume, the second of the multi-volume series Rediscovering Gandhi focuses on non-violence. Consisting of two parts, the first explores Gandhian, feminist and religious approaches to understanding existing conflicts at all levels of the society. It also challenges the notion that Gandhi did not ever endorse the use of violence. Part II of the book offers a Gandhian reading of contemporary trends in conflict management and more specifically the alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Introducing the fundamentals of Satyagraha it formulates certain possible reinterpretations of the ADR label and some of its central themes from Gandhian perspectives. It analyses dispute processes, scrutinizes various paradigmatic criticisms raised against ADR movement, and argues that Satyagraha offers the most potent standpoint from which to examine and enrich the ADR movements. Indian National Security: Misguided Men and Guided Missiles
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380502397; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Five thousand years ago, Manu took a stroll along the banks of the Ganges. Fortuitously, for mankind, he encountered a fish, which warned him of a looming great flood, one that would destroy humanity. In the aftermath of the devastation, Manu’s protégés were condemned to a life of suffering. Survival was tough. They walked the earth and toiled an unforgiving land. It seemed natural, therefore, that man should congregate, and by doing so, form communities – the logic being there was strength in numbers. But as cities flourished, it soon became apparent that the ‘state’ represented not only a safe haven for man but also posed a threat to his own security. With such a rich history, India has, all too sadly, witnessed this paradox more than most. With this in mind, the story of this book is simple: Man’s struggle for survival is the most enduring aspect of a nation’s security equation. And no better illustration of man’s struggle than on the subcontinent where he has been forced to contend with famine, poverty, illiteracy, caste-based discrimination, communalism, internecine conflict, invasion, terrorism war and the spectre of a nuclear holocaust. Amidst this backdrop, it may seem ironic that the mainstream interpretation of Indian security has, by and large, focussed on the military. Why then do we gloss over the human aspects of security – is it through ignorance or do we feel somewhat queasy when confronted with such stark realities ?Printed Pages: 286. 104394

Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia (Academia Scientiarum Fennica)/Bookstore Tiedekirja; Helsinki, Finland; 2005; 9514109678; Hardcover; New; New;
SOME OF THE EARLIEST English writings that now survive are records of verbal charms. They mark the beginning of a millennium-long semi-continuous record of traditional verbal charms, which runs until almost the present day. This represents a remarkable set of data for a vernacular language, and yet when charms have been studied in the past, Anglo-Saxonists, later medievalists, antiquarians and Victorian folklorists have each focussed on their particular period, and the full span of the material has not been addressed. English Verbal Charms aims to provide a description of the genre of charms and the practice of charming by drawing on the surviving data from the entire period. It also presents a discussion of charm-types found in England, mentioning wherever possible their European analogues. Printed Pages: 242. 113837

Anthropology, Politics, and the State: Democracy and Violence in South Asia (New Departures in Anthropology Series)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2008; 0521722128; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
In recent years anthropology has rediscovered its interest in politics. Building on the findings of this research, this book offers a new way of analysing the relationship between culture and politics, with special attention to democracy, nationalism, the state and political violence. Beginning with scenes from an unruly early 1980s election campaign in Sri Lanka, it covers issues from rural policing in north India to slum housing in Delhi, presenting arguments about secularism and pluralism, and the ambiguous energies released by electoral democracy across the subcontinent. It ends by discussing feminist peace activists in Sri Lanka, struggling to sustain a window of shared humanity after two decades of war. Bringing together and linking the themes of democracy, identity and conflict, this important new study shows how anthropology can take a central role in understanding other people’s politics, especially the issues that seem to have divided the world since 9/11. • Synthesizes the most important recent approaches to the anthropology of politics • Offers a new anthropological approach to the issues of democracy and nationalism • Illustrated with first-hand accounts of events of politics and political violence in India and Sri Lanka Contents 1. The strange death of political anthropology; 2. Locating the political; 3. Culture, nation and misery; 4. Performing democracy; 5. The state and self-making; 6. The state and violence; 7. Pluralism in theory, pluralism in practice; 8. Politics and counter-politics. Printed Pages: 208 with 5 half-tones. 021725

The Viking Age in Åland: Insights into Identity and Remnants of Culture
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2014; 9514110986; New;
It is difficult to define exactly when the Viking Age occurred in Åland, the period is generally considered to comprise the ninth and tenth centuries AD and to have ended sometime during the eleventh century. The end of the Viking Age is considered to coincide with the transition from paganism to Christianity. The present volume introduces the topic of Åland in the Viking Age and discusses it from the perspectives of a number of different disciplines with emphasis on questions of identities. The chapters review earlier interpretations, present current views, and also offer exploratory investigations that will stimulate future discussions and will certainly be of interest to specialist and non-specialist alike. Yhä kasvava maan sisäinen muuttoliike on yksi liikkeessä olevan yhteiskunnan ilmentymä. Millaiset ihmiset muuttavat? This exciting and thought-provoking volume, written by a small number of outstanding scholars on colonial and medieval Indian history, ethnohistory and the new military history of South Asia forms the best tribute thinkable to one of the leading scholars in the field of Indian History, Professor Dirk Kolff. Focusing on wider geographical as well as on more specific social and military aspects, the first section deals with issues of Islamic and European expansion in South Asia. The second section examines specific medieval topics such as military service and slavery, legitimacy and religious devotion. Towards Full and Decent Employment
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2007; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
While the international community has made a commitment to achieving full employment and decent work for all, this goal seems ever more distant in view of recent trends such as growing unemployment and underemployment, the phenomenon of 'jobless growth', the growing 'casualization' of employment relations, the promotion of labour flexibility at the expense of welfare security, de-industrialization and the continued decline of peasant agriculture. While revisiting some familiar terrain with new lenses, this book also breaks new ground in seeking fresh solutions. Employment creation is the key link in ensuring that economic growth contributes to poverty reduction, with management of technological change playing a crucial role. While the recent trend towards greater labour flexibility seems irresistible, recent experience suggests some options for also ensuring decent work and economic security. Although recent financial liberalization has exacerbated employment problems, alternative macroeconomic policy priorities can make a difference. New approaches to social security, the informal economy, the welfare state and rural employment in Africa are explored. Printed Pages: 412. 031591

Christian Missions in Bihar and Jharkhand till 1947: A Study by P. C. Horo
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480389; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Christianity in India is nearly two millennia old. Along with Hinduism and other prominent minority religions such as Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, it has become a part of the religious heritage of India, which is known for its religiosity and religious diversity. Therefore, the History of Christianity in India is a part of the History of this land. So also, the History of the Christian community is an aspect of the general history of the people of this country.This book deals with the History of Christianity in Bihar and Jharkhand till the year of Indian Independence, in 1947, based on a detailed description of Christian Missions established by different Missionary Organizations during the period. It is a Mission-oriented History with focus on the missionaries. This scholarly study highlights the benign presence of hundreds of dedicated missionaries and their heroic work among the poor, the marginalized and the sick wherever they operated, effecting significant transformation in the Christian community in particular, and the wider ambient society, in general.This book is the fulfillment of a dream of Prof. Prem Chand Horo, to publish his thesis in book form, highlighting the contribution of the Christian Missions toward nation building. The efforts of Dr. Fr. Jose Kalapura further adds to the scholarly contents by his able editing, checking the facts and rectifying any methodological drawbacks, without altering the content of the research, besides adding an informative Appendix on the Missions and a suitable Introduction giving an overview, thus making it relevant, readable for students, researchers and general readers alike.Printed Pages: 338. 106404

Baroque India: The Neo-Romen Religious Architecture of South Asia: A Global Stylistic Survey
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8173051615; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
"Baroque India is the fruit of over 40 years of research, and is the work of one professionally trained in the history of Indian art (Hindu, Buddhist and Jain). In addition, he is the author of a survey of Islamic architecture world-wide, which includes, of course, the Indo-Islamic traditions. It is his belief that Indian Baroque--or, more correctly, Indian Neo-Roman--cannot be properly appreciated without an understanding of the architectural styles that preceded it on the subcontinent, and which exercised a significant impact on it. To produce the book the author not only visited the various sites which contain the monuments of Indian Neo-Roman, but has travelled as an architectural pilgrim over much of the Neo-Roman world, in Europe and the Americas. He has also familiarized himself with the art-historical theories on the various styles of architecture, in particular, the Neo-Roman. He has thus prepared himself to contemplate Baroque India's contribution against the Neo-Roman background. In consequence, the method adopted in this book has been that of summarily describing the distinctive spatial modalities of the various Neo-Roman styles, as reflected in their major monuments, especially the styles which impacted on India: a method that facilitates the discernment of the specific Indian contribution to Neo-Roman taken as a whole. In so doing, the author has tried to outline a consistent aesthetic theory of Neo-Roman, to portray its five major modes--Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism--as expressions of the Neo-Roman essence, immanently developing, in the indicated sequence, one from the other, and pullulating a rich variety of spatial themes that both display a marked originality and manifest a capacity for assimilating the spatial nuances of the other architectural styles. This theory, he believes, has enabled him to distinguish the originality of Indian Neo-Roman, and describe what it has absorbed from the subcontinent's Indian and Indo-Islamic styles, while integrating the absorbed material into its Neo-Roman substance."Printed Pages: 518 with 67 figures & 217 halftone illustrations. 100171

Song of Goa: Mandos of Yearning
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8173051666; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Konkani song, or which Goan song is a preeminent branch, is a treasury of the traditional music of the Indian subcontinent, containing as many as 34 identifiable types of song. They include the monophonic and harmonic varieties, the former in existence before the Portuguese brought western music into India, and the latter, consequent on the western impact. It was in Goa that Indian musicians first began to compose in western musical forms, incorporating into them motifs and nuances of their own immemorial tradition. "Among the 34 types figures the Mando, a dance song typically consisting of quatrains, frequently having appended choruses, set in six-four time. Its main themes are love and events (fobro), the latter social and political in nature. But its favorite theme is love, oriented toward marriage, where the lover yearns for union with his beloved, achieves that union, or laments at his failure to realize it. The love Mandos are thus of three types: yearning (utrike, the theme of this book), union (ekvott) and lamentation (villap). The melody of the Mando is uniformly melancholic, but it scintillates with luminous imagery, as of suns, stars, flowers and diamonds. The Mando evidently originated in the 1830s, but its period of high achievement extends from around 1870 to 1950. It was given expression to by numerous composers, of which four are particularly remarkable: Paulo Milagres Silva (1855-1931), Arnaldo de Menezes (1863-1917), Gizelino Rebelo (1875-1931) and Torquato de Figueiredo (1876-1948). As a dance the Mando, India's ballo nobile, was the last aristocratic social dance created anywhere."Goans not only initiated the westernization of Indian music, but from the late 19th century, also pioneered in Indian ethnomusicology, providing a model for the preservation and interpretation of the rich folk music of India. The present work aspires to represent that model. Printed Pages: 244. 100278

Folk Songs of Goa: Mando-Dulpods and Deknnis (Song of Goa, no.3)
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8173052808; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Konkani Song, of which Goan Song is the preeminent branch, is a treasury of the traditional music of the Indian subcontinent. It has at least 35 types, monophonic and harmonic, the former prevalent before the Portuguese brought Western music into India, and the latter, consequent to the Western impact. It was in Goa that Indian musicians first began to compose in Western musical forms, incorporating into them motifs and nuances of their own immemorial tradition. Among these 35 types four were created to accompany social dancing: the Mando, the Mando-dulpod, the Dulpod, and the Deknni. The Mando, the finest creation of Goan Song, is a slow verse-and-refrain composition, in six-four time, dealing with love, tragedy and contemporary events, both social and political. Aryan Books International has published two volumes on the Mando, entitled, Song of Goa, vol. 1: Mandos of Yearning (2000); and vol. 2: Mandos of Union and Lamentation (2003).While the Mando is an art song, the remaining three types represent Goan folk song. The Mando-dulpod is a slower variety of the Dulpod (or a quicker sort of Mando), also in six-four time, facilitating the transition from the slow rhythm of the Mando to the quicker one of the Dulpod. The Dulpod itself, in six-eight time, is typically descriptive of everyday life in traditional Goa, particularly that of the Christians. The Deknni ("song of the Deccan" ?) is a song imitating Hindu music in the musical idiom current among the Christians, in two-four or six-eight time, descriptive mostly of Hindu life, with special attention given to the temple dancers. The present volume contains examples of the Mando-dulpod and the Deknni. Hopefully a future volume will be devoted to the Dulpod.Printed Page: 112. 100280

Cholamandal: An Artists' Village
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0195669886; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
'This book, the work of many hands in keeping with the diversity and collegiality that characterized the Paniker-led response [to contemporary art], tells the fascinating and moving story of how artistic freedom and independence were aspired for and won along a path strewn with obstacles. It is part elegy, part scholarship, part informed journalism.' -- N Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu 'Today Cholamandal, named after an ancient dynasty that encouraged the arts, is India's largest self-supporting art colony and one of the most successful in Asia. Twenty-one of the original forty artists remain. "They are the enlightenment of contemporary art in India", said Santhanaraj, a prominent painter who spent several days there. They have combined Western and Eastern influences and generated a cycle of interest in contemporary art.' -- Stephen Kinzer, The New York Times This is the story of Cholamandal, which began in 1966 as an artists' village situated on a ten-acre p lo t on the Coromandel Coast near Chennai. It offered a place where artists could live, create, and share their art with others within the community. At Cholamandal, the creative artist is an equal participant in society, self-employed and independent. This book profiles a series of such creative artists, who have each carved a place for themselves in the world of art, some of them, internationally. Illustrated with over 130 beautiful colour plates depicting the artists' work, this is a wonderful and important document of a novel and sustainable idea, one which deserves emulation. Cholamandal was an attempt to foster a genre of art which, according to the principle of the institution in its early days, the late K.C.S. Paniker, was 'Indian in spirit and worldwide contemporary'. Towards the end of the fifties, many painters and sculptors in the Madras School of Arts and Crafts joined in the search for what amounted to a new way of life in contemporary art. The venture was an excitin g one and soon proved to be exacting as well. Thirty talented painters and sculptors acquired land to work at Cholamandal in comparative peace. There, the artist would paint or sculpt through the major part of the day, and applied himself to a congenial art craft during leisure hours, to supplement, if necessary, his income from the sale of paintings and sculptures. In the book, a biographical sketch or interview with each artist explains the motivation and technique behind the works produced at Cholamandal. These artists, some of whom live and work there even now, with a few exceptions, were once students of the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Madras. Cholamandal marked a new way of life in Indian contemporary art, and is perhaps the first of its kind anywhere in the world. This book reveals the artists who lived there, as well as the spirit behind their works, to the general reader and the connoisseur of modern Indian art. 003154

The Essential Sri Anandamayi Ma: Life and Teachings of a 20th Century Indian Saint
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 812083478X; First Edition; Softcover; New;
It is an engaging, concise, and spiritually sensitive biography of Anandamayi Ma based on both thorough research and personal contact. It provides us with an insightful interpretation of the significance of Anandamayi Ma's personality and teaching. An edited rendering of Preofessor Lipski's writings on Anandamayi Ma begins the present volume, forming the first and second chapters. No work on Anandamayi Ma would, however, be complete without the inclusion of her actual words. To that end, the third and largest chapter of the present volume provides edited selections from Ma's discourses, recorded by Brahmacari Kamal Bhattacharjee, and later translated into English by Atmananda, both close devotees. This biography by Professor Lipski along with the actual words of Anandamayi Ma creates as complete a verbal representation as is possible of a woman who was herself beyond the level of duality and thus, ultimately, beyond all description.Printed Pages: 141. 102460
