Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies (Volume 8: Buddhist Philosophy from 100 to 350 A.D)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 812081553X; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The following volume constitutes the second in a series devoted to Buddhist philosophy. It takes up more or less where its predecessor, Volume VII of this Encyclopedia, leaves off, around the beginning of the second century A.D. This is a period still not well understood, with a great deal of scholarly disagreement remaining about many aspects of the history and thought of the period. The editor of the volume has tried to utilize the most up-to-date scholarship known to us. The volume treats the subject altogether chronologically, beginning with the Buddha and ending when Buddhist thought leaves India around 14th century A.D. The purpose behind this approach is to avoid imposing more divisions into Buddhism than are historically apparent. The scope of these volumes is limited to summaries of the texts that are of philosophical interest throughout, theoretical rather than practical in their intended function, and polemical or at least expository in a context where defence of one view among alternatives is appropriate. These criteria have been interpreted here broadly and loosely. In these volumes dealing with Buddhism, the original Sutras, the earliest literature regularly ascribed to the Buddha or his immediate disciples, is not summarized.Printed Pages: 844. 102131

Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies (Volume 16: Philosophy of Purva-Mimamsa)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120836448; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
'Mimamsa', as used classically, has among its meanings that of an "exploration" or "investigation" of something. In the context of early Vedic thought, it can mean specifically a theory governing the origins, basic values, and assumptions about man, in particular about the type of actions a human should or should not perform, as suggested and sometimes spelled out in the Vedas. The Vedas, the oldest extant literature of what is now considered Hinduism, generated a vast literature of their own. Some of this passed down to us in the form of brief pronouncements called sutras, which were presumably meant for memorization and were not always independently intelligible. These sutras in turn generated explanatory commentaries, and commentaries upon commentaries. The basic sutras of what came to be the Purva Mimamsa system were known as the Mimamsa-sutras or Purvamimamsasutras ('Purva' since another set of literature expounding a different understanding of ultimate things came to be recognized also as Mimamsa, specifically "Uttara" or later Mimamsa.) Initially the Purva Mimamsa had no special recognition of the subject matter of philosophy as understood in these volumes of our Encyclopedia, and would not warrant treatment as Indian philosophy in other systems developed ideas concerning the assumptions of rebirth, transmigration, and the possibility of attainment of final liberation, Purva Mimamsa also developed a philosophical system in response, beginning with further commentaries on their sutras and proceeding on to independent works, comprising a collection of texts which constitutes the philosophy being studied in the present Volume.Printed Pages: 682. 102133

Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies: Acintyabhedhabheda Vaisnava Philosophy, Volume 19
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Private Limited/Research India Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120839978; Hardcover; New; New;
Confronted with a series of volumes called the Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies, one is likely to ask, What constitutes 'philosophy' in the relevant sense? Introductions to understood as investigation of the nature of and path (s) to liberation from rebirth (moksa; nirvana), a definition which seems to fit most Indian schools of thought as taught and practiced in the classical period (500 B.C.-1000 A.D.), whether Jain, Buddhist or Hindu. These schools persists for the most part into the twenty-first century, though concern for liberation is in some cases overshadowed by the rise of a commitment to religious purposes, understood broadly as bhakti or devotion to God. The system that is the subject of the present volume is one such devotional system. As this volume demonstrates, the concern of this system is two-fold: liberation is accepted, but downplayed in the face of the requirements of true devotion. The system is but one representative of devotional systems; other such systems, equally deserving of a volume devoted to them (such as Suddhadvaita), are regretably not planned for inclusion in this Encyclopedia. In Part I of the book the Introduction written by Prof. Ramakanta Chakravarti focuses on "Gaudiya Vaisnavism in Bengal." In Part II the summaries of works include Caitanya, Raghunath Goswami Dasa, Sanatana Gosvami, Rupa Gosvami, Raghunatha Bhatta, Gopala Bhatta, Jiva Gosvami, Narottama Dasa, Narayana Bhatta, Visnudasa Gosvami, Vamsidhara, Visvanatha Cakarvarti, Radha Damodara, Rupa Kaviraj, Baladeva Vidyabhushana, Savai Jayasimha, Bhavanicarana Tarkabhusana, Krsnadeva Sarvabhauma or Vedantavagisa, Viracandra Gosvamin, Radharamana Dasa Gosvami, Bhaktivinoda Thakkura, Vrndavana Tarkalamkara, Gaurakisora Gosvami, Aksaya Kumara Sastri, and Anupanarayana Tarkasiromani. Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies (Vol;ume 17) Jain Philosophy (Part III))
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120836456; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Acontribution of Janinism to Indian philosophy which seems most stimulating, inspiring, debated and controversial, one which provoked the most opposition from other systems of India, is beyond doubt the doctrine of multiplexity of reality (anekantavada). Indisputably it is also the most interesting Jaina contribution to Indian philosophy. The doctrine involved both a very particular realist ontology as well as a corresponding epistemology that was structured in such a way as to most aptly handle certain ontological presuppositions.The Jaina ontology entailed by the doctrine of multiplexity of reality (anekantavada) viewed the world structure as consisting of four interrelated aspects: substance (dravya), quality (guna), mode (paryaya) and ineffable, transient occurrence (vivarta, vartana, often overlooked in both Jaina expositions of the theory and in analyses carried out by modern researchers). Howerver, the point to emphasise is that things, especially when conceived as substances, were believed to preserve their identity and in this aspect they were immutable and permanent. At the same time, however, when conceived as modes, they appeared to change and transform continuously. This seemed to have led to contradictions in ontology. Besides, in order to explain the process of change, Jaina ontology also distinguished three modes of existence, that actually co-existed: origination (utpada, udaya), continued existence (sthiti, dhrauvya) and cessation, or disintegration (bhanga, vyaya, japavarga). These four closely corresponded to the Buddhist Sarvastivadaís and Abhidharmaís four (or three) conditioned factors, known as ëmarkersí (samskrtalaksana)óorigination (utpada), continuity (sthiti), deterioration (jara, vyaya) and extinction (bhanga, nirodha).Printed Pages: 432. 102134

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120803108; Third Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume summarizes what we know of early Advaita Vedanta upto the Samkara's pupils, Suresvara, Padmapada, Totaka and Hanstamalaka. An analytical introduction by the editor introduces the reader to the concepts utilized by Gaudapada, Samkaracarya and mandana Misra in expounding and defending the Advaita view. This is followed by summaries of all the authentic Advaita works of these authors, together with those of Suresvara and Padmapada as well as a number of other works which have been attributed to samkara, Totaka and Hastamalaka. This volume is divided into two parts and is enriched with an elaborate introduction discussing briefly the history of the school, its theories of value, language and relations and its metaphysics and epistemology.Printed Pages: 645. 102128

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120836154; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Covering Jaina philosophy from where Volume Ten left off toward the end of the tenth century, this Volume covers 355 works of 99 Jain philosophers who lived between 1000 and 1300 A.D. The names of a number of famous Jaina authors are covered in the list along with summaries of many of their works. Piotr Balcerowicz' article on the Jaina theory of viewpoints or perspective (naya), which introduces this Volume, shows how that theory, set forth in the famous account of seven fold predication (saptapadarthi), avoids skepticism, contradiction, or violation of the law of excluded middle, while presenting a plausible, if complex, way of gauging reality. Echoes of Silence: Avadhut Gita Revisited
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382788843; Softcover; New;
"Watch out. This is not another of those feel-good ‘oneness’ Advaita books. This one is a double-barrelled shotgun taking pot shots at the conceptualising mind -one barrel being fired by the great Indian mystic-sage Dattatreya (Avadhut) and the other by Karl Renz, the contemporary ‘Avadhut’. There is no escape here not just for the ‘fragmented-mind’ but also for the enlightened ‘whole-mind’! 109450

A Little bit of Nothingness: Eighty-One Observations on the Unnameable
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789384363543; Softcover; New;
The teachings of Karl Renz are a bit like Zen Koans — those short statements that stop the minds activity by contemplating their paradoxical meaning. But Karl takes you even further: pondering his words have the power to turn the mind back upon itself, toward our original awareness of Being. A Little Bit of Nothingness is a unique juxtaposition between the dialogues of Karl Renz and the eighty-one verses of the Tao Te Ching. Here, the reality of the Tao — the unnameable, original cause of all that is — has the potential to become evident as our own reality, by the deep insights provided through Karl.The search for happiness usually takes us on an outward journey where we find ourselves identifying with everything except "that which we truly are." What we really need is to taste a "a little bit of nothingness"— the absence of any kind of ideas that we have about ourselves. No one sees this as well as Karl Renz, the German mystic-artist who, for the last ten years, has travelled around the world pulling the rug out from under our hallowed beliefs, leaving us blissfully wanting even less."Realization means that consciousness, which once was identified with an object, becomes boundry-less. It becomes conscious of being consciousness. But the Self is never realized nor not-realized. It is always prior to any ideas about enlightenment or non-enlightenment. Anything you can say about it is an idea." Karl Renz. Printed Pages: 164. 111613

Am I - I Am
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8188071854; Softcover; New;
Am I - I Am is an assortment of delectable snippets from various talks of Karl Renz - talks which Karl often refers to as ‘Living Words’.These ‘Living Words’ are best described in Karl’s own words as those “without a speaker, having no direction, are not teaching, give no advice and do not want anything from you. This, simply put, is the heart of the book.all you can say about the phenomenon named ‘Karl’ is that the words that emanate from him are a relentless destroyer of all concepts - from the cosy to the profound. Using his livewire humour and trademark wordplay, Karl edges you so far beyond your pet concepts that at some point you may just find that ‘you’ have fallen off into the void. An enigmatic feature of Karl’s words is that they are utterly bereft of intent or strategy. And surprise! Something which otherwise would have been deemed fit to be dismissed as mindless prattle, has quite the opposite effect in this case - of making one want for more and never having enough of it! This spontaneous barrage of Kail’s words, steeped in carefree-ness and intentionless-ness, can be more destructive to ‘whatever that can be destroyed’ than any conceivable tool of destruction. So, go ahead and enter this vortex of Absolute churning at your own risk - ‘you’ may or may not get out! Printed Pages: 228. 111616

Heaven and Hell
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8188071935; Softcover; New;
‘You don’t need this book!’ Karl would say, ‘You stand to gain absolutely nothing from it. He would probably add he hopes nobody gains or understands anything from him. What’s more, he would mean it!In Karl you encounter Advaita in its rawest form - undiluted, uncooked, unconditioned by thought and untainted by frills or more concepts. It’s bang-in-your-face, inescapable Advaita . . . ‘What-you-cannot-not-be!’Jean-Paul Sartre said, ‘The Other is hell’. How does one define ‘The Other’? Are the people around us ‘The Others? Is the little echo in the mind also ‘The Other’? Who sees when the eyes open? Who defines? And then who defines the definer? Questions, questions.As Karl eloquently describes it, ‘You realize yourself in the comfortin the absence and in the discomfort in the presence. Because the presence is always the experience of separation, from the beginning. Even Awareness needs an experience. The presence -separation, absence - no separation. Heaven and hell. And in both you realize yourself.’ He then takes even that away as well by saying ‘If there would be a reality in the presence or in the absence, then it will be hell again because it would be two.’In his irreverent, uncompromising style Karl presents the abject futility of any and every endeavour towards finding ‘a way out’. Many newcomers scurry for cover when they encounter this ‘disheartening and cold’ approach. Some come back later, on the rare apperception of the absurdity of any ‘one’ wanting a ‘way out’! But the ones who do return, stay on to enjoy the Karl Renz circus of irrelevance: irrelevance of what is spoken, irrelevance of the listener and irrelevance of the speaker. Grace in action! Karl Renz, now based in Mallorca, Spain, travels throughout the world simply responding to few of the numerous invitations to hold meetings. He has no agenda, no teaching, no techniques, and no desire for whatever gets said to be understood. To him, his talks have no special significance as being different from, say, the barking of a dog or the gibberish sounds that he sometimes makes during the talks - not different than the next sip of coffee! The next (moment), for him is simply the next, an embrace of helplessness! Printed Pages: 220. 111634

The Lies About Truth
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789384363192; Softcover; New;
The truth which can be spoken is, for sure, not the truth. Truth is never beautiful and beauty is never true. Thats the first premise in Tao, says Karl. For someone who summarily dismisses any possibility of anyone ever knowing truth, its a wonder that this guy Karl is still in business-seasoned seekers forever longing to listen to him and not getting enough of it! I am just answering unnecessary questions with unnecessary answers, 'I cannot give you anything nor can I take anything away from you, he says. Its perhaps the un-self-consciousness of his utterances, delivered with electric, unaffected ease that buries the listeners intellect and most cherished concepts into a quicksand of spontaneous laughter. Seriousness gets challenged here-seriously! Many spiritual veterans will warn you against the dangerous Karl since he ruthlessly bulldozes any and every truth you may want to cozy up to. Relentlessly kicking the knower where it hurts most-at the core of knowingness itself - Karl precipitates an existential crisis. So, dont be surprised if Karls prattle, bereft of prescription or intent, abruptly stops you dead in your tracks only to, in the words of the Sage Jnaneshwar, 'see yourself without the aid of a mirror!' The Afterlife of Sai Baba: Competing Visions of a Global Saint
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125063137; Hardcover; New; New;
Nearly a century after his death, the image of Sai Baba, the serene old man with a white beard from Shirdi village in Maharashtra, is instantly recognizable to most South Asians (and many Westerners) as a guru for all faiths. During his lifetime Sai Baba accepted all followers who came to him, regardless of their religion, caste, or gender, and preached to them a path of spiritual enlightenment and mutual tolerance. These days, tens of thousands of Indians and foreigners make the pilgrimage to Shirdi each year, and Sai Baba temples have sprung up in unlikely places around the world, such as Munich, Seattle, and Austin.Tracing his rise from village guru to global phenomenon, Karline McLain uses a wide range of sources—hagiographies and memoirs, songs and films, posters and photographs, temple rituals and sermons, fieldwork and interviews—to investigate the different ways that Sai Baba has been understood in South Asia and beyond and the reasons behind his popularity amongst Hindus in particular. Shining a spotlight on an incredibly forceful devotional movement that avoids fundamental politics and emphasizes unity, service, and peace, The Afterlife of Sai Baba is an entertaining—and enlightening—look at one of South Asia's most popular spiritual gurus. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of religious studies, media studies, anthropology and sociology. Printed Pages: 280. 110980

Random House India; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8184003110; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
The first-ever full length history of Bhutan by one of its most pre-eminent scholars In recent years, the remote kingdom of Bhutan has increasingly attracted the attention of the world. In 2008, it emerged as the world’s youngest democracy and in the same year crowned the world’s youngest monarch. This was followed by the new King’s colourful wedding in 2011. Today, it continues to enchant the rest of the world with its policy of Gross National Happiness and has become a very popular destination for travel. But, despite its growing popularity and the rising scholarly interest in the country, Bhutan remains one of the most poorly studied places on earth. Karma Phuntsho’s The History of Bhutan is the first-ever attempt to cover the entire history of Bhutan in some detail in English, combining both traditional perspectives and modern academic analysis. Written by a leading expert on the country, the book tells the story of Bhutan in a narrative style interspersed with some analytical and topical discussion, and numerous citations and translations from earlier writings. It is primarily a historical account, but it also includes substantive discussions of Bhutan’s geography, culture and society to give the readers an incisive introduction to the country. About The Author Dr Karma Phuntsho is a leading scholar on Bhutan and teaches Buddhism and Bhutan Studies in the country and abroad. India's Nuclear Bomb and National Security
Routledge; London, UK; 2007; 0415401321; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 155 x 235 Mm
India’s Nuclear Bomb and National Security gives an analytic account of the dynamics of India's nuclear build up. It puts forward a new comprehensive model, which goes beyond the classic strategic model of accepting motives of arming behaviour, and incorporates the dynamics in India’s nuclear programme. The core argument of the book surrounds the question about India's security considerations and their impact on India's nuclear policy development. Karsten Frey explores this analytic model by including explanatory variables on the unit-level, where interests are generally related to symbolic, less strategic values attributed to nuclear weapons. These play a significant role within India's domestic political party competition and among certain pressure groups. They also impacted India's relationship with other countries on non-proliferation matters, for example the concept of the country's 'status' and 'prestige'. Identifying the role of the strategic elite in determining India's nuclear course, this book also argues that one of the pivotal driving forces behind India's quest for the nuclear bomb is India's struggle for international recognition and the strong, often obsessive sensitivities of India's elite regarding 'acts of discrimination' or 'ignorance' by the West towards India. The great soul that he was, Kabir epitomised the Oneness of God and the equality of mankind. He was a virulent critic of the absurdities of the caste system and ridiculed the prevalent notion that the status of an individual was the outcome of caste or class in which he was born. Complete and absolute faith in the Supreme Being was the core of his belief. Apart from what has travelled from mouth to mouth in the annals of history, Kabir's hymns are recorded in Kabir Granthavali and Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The present work brings to the reader a collection of some immortal hymns of the outstanding bard that are sung in the gurdwaras and congregations by Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike across the globe. Physics of God
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8189766260; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Physics of God attempts to find and explain the ultimate reality, God, using laws of modern physics. It inaugurates a new intellectual order by realizing the much talked about and hyped but still awaited joining of science and God; reason and faith; physics and metaphysics. It proposes a new hypothesis that borders science and imagination. This work is a serious confluence of physics, philosophy, metaphysics, theosophy and theology written with a pen, which is youthful and bubbly. Jampak Zu, the virtual cartoon character who has co-authored this book with Kartikey is an innovation in itself. The work brings out seven levels of reality that constitute the cosmic existence. Human existence participates in all of them. It lists the seven important parameters of reality and establishes a canonical inter-relationship between them all. Laws of physics are then extrapolated into the realm of non-physical worlds using these inter-parametric relations. The seven parameters work like seven interconnected knobs. By turning their values, the reader is made to undergo a journey from one world to another. At the climax of analysis, the reader finds himself in the world of God. The ultimate reality reveals itself automatically and spontaneously with a pleasant surprise that even God does not violate the laws of physics. We see Him through the lens of physics.Printed Pages: 220. 104777

Sacred Trees and Indian Life
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8173052654; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 28 x 23 Cm Susanne Hawkes
This Book is about the abiding bond that exists between trees and everyday life in India: especially between sacred trees and everyday life. As it subsists today, it may not be so easily visible, for one’s attention is diverted by other things, and the air in any case is filled with too much noise, a surfeit of human greed. But the bond is there: this book is an attempt to draw attention to its embedded existence. In the photographs in this book, and the epigraphs that accompany them, the reader will discover, behind seemingly simple sights and words, thoughts that move and ideas that invite us to reflect. The Golden Tap: The Inside Story of Hyper-Funded Indian Start-Ups
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 9789351941521; Hardcover; New; New;
Ever wondered why global investors are willing to write million-dollar cheques to young and inexperienced entrepreneurs? Why companies are no longer judged on their ability to make profits? Why the valuation of a start-up can dwarf that of its well-established counterpart? Is it a bubble? Or have the rules of the game changed? Can these hyper-funded, technology driven companies become global superpowers? Or is it an unsustainable phenomenon? The Golden Tap gives you the answers. In a remarkably honest, no holds barred account, Kashyap – himself a serial entrepreneur – demystifies the technology ecosystem that exists in India today. From the origins of Amazon and Google, to the remarkable growth of Flipkart and Ola, he meticulously plots and chronicles a connected global sequence of events. Set in this background, he recounts his personal roller coaster of a life. A story filled with ambition, greed, vanity, fear, and success that all young entrepreneurs can relate to. Is this the business model of the future? Or merely a game of poker played by master investors? The answers pour out of The Golden Tap. Printed Pages: 280. 108566

16099 Kasibhatta Satya Murty
The Aryans and After
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8187418672; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book is an attempt to sketch the evolution of Indian Society from the Vedic Gotra to the Puranic Hinduism. The entire work studies the origin of the Aryan problem afresh, basing on the palaeo-biological evidence and the archaeological evidence. Almost half of the work is devoted to the Aryan problem and the elements of Aryan society. Subsequently, the book deals with the materialism proposed by the Lokayatas more popularly known as Carvakas. The revolution continued by the Jainism and Buddhism and the counter revolution through the Itihasas, Puranas, Darsanas-the three major phases of Vedicisation, Devaedicisation Revedicisation, resulting in the formation of the puranic Hindu Society, which is the stylobate of the present Indian union, are paid equal attention.Historiographically more importance is given to the original sources, while making the study. Though the chapters Rule of Money, Mahajanapadas and Ushering of Empire appear to be somewhat like general history, the interpretation rallied around the target of reaching the Puranic Hindu Society.The role of the foreigners in this process is discussed in the most acceptable way. Anyhow their political History does not come under the preview of this book. This is more a socio-cultural history.Printed Pages: 165. 104104
