Good Governanace
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351280330; Hardcover; New; New;
The subject of good governance is one that immediately inspires cynicism and hope because of its very nature and relevance. It is a critical prerequisite of participative and citizen centric-development that we all talk about. Detractors may dismiss it as cliché ridden; the fact however is, that governance is all around us and envelops our lives in a most profound manner. There is hardly any domain of daily life that is not touched by governance. It is a matter of concern that despite the efforts made so far good governance continues to suffer on various counts. Almost all aspects of civic life have adversely been influenced by lack of good governance. There are question marks on the moral fabric, politicians, administration and various other sections of the civil society. There is therefore, an urgent need to address these issues in wider societal interests. Good governance has emerged as the key area of theory, policy and practice and is seen as the foundation for a just and equitable social order. The apparently routine subject of Good Governance has received a most timely impetus from the University Grants Commission, by their sanctioning of Special Assistance Programme (SAP) to the Department of Public Administration, University of Lucknow, at a time when age old issues of governance are being revisited and immensely debated upon a regular basis by various stakeholders. The deliberations of the various Seminars / Workshops held under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) have culminated in this book. Buddha: His Nirvana and Mahaparinirvana
Sundeep Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8185067945; Hardcover; New; New;
In the present book an endeavour has been made by us to delineate the life and death of the Buddha uthenticating with Pali and Samskrt ratifications. Relevant data for this book has been ably marshalled from the literary citations thereby paving substratum to understand the great teacher in the right perspective and to fabricate the life and cessation of the Buddha on equitable and syllogistic rounds. In the preparation of this book we have to dive deep into the Buddhist philosophy and could be able to project the correct meaning of the intricate terms Nirvana and Mahaparinirvana. We have aimed too to lay emphasis on the literary and plastic corroborations of the Nirvana and the Mahaparinirvana of the lord Buddha and hoped against hope to visualise the total personality of the great teacher fully and comprehensively. The book is a resultant of a fervid study of the life and cessation of the grand personality, Light of Asia, the Buddha who sanctified the Indian soil by the tred and trod of his holy feet. The authors elucidate in this book with percipience and authenticity the various life events of the Buddha and his great finale. The masterly treatment of the chapters like the life events of the Buddha and the evenings of the Buddha`s career reflect the immaculate scholarship of the authors. The cogentre appraisal of the chapter on stone-page of Buddha`s Nirvana and Mahaparinirvana is amazing. In fact the book is a running commentary of the life and dissolution of Buddha as gleaned through Pali and Sanskrit texts. This splendid book remains an authoritative and entrancing work on the subject. No student of Buddhist religion, philosophy, art and architecture can afford to let slip this gainful work. Preface 1. Structural Conservation of Monuments in South India
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 818605006X; Hardcover; New; New;
While the archaeological, historical and Architectural aspects of Indian Monuments can be said to have been studied to a greater extent, not much is known about their preservation work, otherwise known as the Structural conservation. The 'Conservation Manual' prepared by Sir John Marshal eight decades ago, was mainly intended to serve as a Hand Book to Conservators and do not deal with the subject of the Structural Conservation as a whole. The present book makes a Beginning to fill the gap.Structural conservation work involves a proper Diagnosis of the problem and taking remedial measures. For diagnosis, the conservator is expected to know the Anatomy of the monuments and also about their deterioration. In the first part of this book, the Construction methods of Buddhist Stupas, Hindu temples, and Islamic monuments are discussed based on site evidence from an Engineering point of view. Concealed parts like foundations, particularly of Hindu Temples get special attention. The trabeate technique, the dry stone masonry and the arcuate technique of Islamic structures are also examined in this book.Beginning with Climatic causes, the various causes contributing to the deterioration of Indian monuments are identified in a separate chapter. After tracing the evolution of conservation principles and discussing about the structural analysis, the various techniques used as a part of structural conservation work like grouting, etc. are furnished in the first part of this book.Seven case studies dealing with the structural conservation problems of an excavated site, a megalithic burial site, a Buddhist Stupa, a Rock-cut Monument, a temple, a tomb and a fort, all selected from Andhra Pradesh constitute the 2nd part of this book. The concluding chapter contains recommendations for better preservation of monuments. 110594

Judging the Judges
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121206065; Hardcover; New; New;
This treatise by prominent Legal luminaries is intended to Review the performance of judges and the Justice Delivery system in India in recent times. A starting exposition of the acts of infringement on the perimeters of judicial system by extraneous powers is presented. In this book, the current hot topic of judicial activism is examined in the context of delivery of social justice. In a special article, V.N. Narayanan beautifully brings to light the contradiction between the judiciaries urge to restore its power and the urge (rather necessity) to exercise this power to deliver the goods.A treatise intended to review the performance of judges in India in recent times. It presents, quite pertinently, a critical appraisal of the Indian judicial system-its perimeters and infringement upon it by powers extraneous to it. Special attention is paid to the constraints on the justice delivery system in India.Printed Pages: 224. 105912

Aryan Path of the Buddha
Sundeep Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8175741562; Hardcover; New; New;
In Buddhism, special emphasis is laid on the practice of the teachings of the Buddha and that practice chiefly consists of traversing the middle path. That middle path is known as Aryan eightfold path, while the entire teachings of the master are labelled with the name of Aryadharma. The book makes a serious attempt to go into the reasons why the master called his dharma as aryadharma. Tracing the meaning of the word arya and dharma from both the points of view, historical as well as philosophical, and also comparing the path described by the master with the ancient way of Indian life, a new purpose emerges that encour-ages any serious student to embark upon the path of practice shown by the master. However, even after the passing of several centuries of time after the master?s departure from this earth, the voice of the master echoes in the words, ?attadÏpo viharatha?, be lamp unto yourselves. After going through the book, the reader will certainly come face to face with the truths that are refreshing and create a new enthusiasm for following the teachings of the master which are encased in the ancient language of Pali. Contents : Preface Abbreviations Chapter I Introduction Chapter II The Significance of Ariya Chapter III The Ariyan Eightfold Path Chapter IV Wheel of Dhamma Chapter V Proving through Similes (Upama) and Possibility (Thanam) Chapter VI The Middle Path, Devoid of Extremes Appendices Bibliography Index. Meaning is the core and heart of any language. When it comes to ancient languages such as Pali, the study of meaning is conducted with a special purpose. Pali like any other ancient language is literary in which the words and teachings of the Buddha are contained. A student of Pali studies this language for understanding the words of the Blessed One, though he may not use the knowledge of language for any communication. The need of communication applies to the current languages in which the people normally speak. For ancient languages, the purpose of any study is for understanding the same. While this general feature applies to Pali also, there is some higher purpose and that is the realization of the essence of the teachings. Thus the word artha, meaning is for understanding as well realizing the same. This book seeks to emphasize the need to study the aspect of meaning keeping in mind this special purpose for Pali. The modern linguists conduct their study mostly on modern languages with scientific tools that had undergone tremendous change in the course of recent past. But when the same tools are applied to ancient languages in any linguistic study, the said approach needs to be changed. The study of meaning in this book is conducted with the special emphasis given to the caution of the Buddha in study of his teachings and for him the word artha, meaning lies in its realization of the essence of the teachings and not to serve a mere purpose of communication. If for Sanskrit and other ancient languages, the letter is very important as to mode of chanting, intonation etc., for Pali, it is the practical realization that is behind the concept of meaning. This approach has been judiciously mixed with modern linguistic approach to some extent in this study. An exclusive study of this type seeks to bring out the intentions of the Buddha as far as the medium of language in which he taught is concerned. Preface 1. General Aspects of Meaning 2. Concept of Meaning 3. Pali Canon 4. Proper Names 5. Numerals 6. Commentaries in Pali Literature 7. Commentarial Meaning 8. Abhidhamma. Printed Pages: 346. 112750

Temple and Society in South India
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8174791884; Hardcover; New; New;
The temple is the focus for all aspects of everyday life in the Hindu community-religious, cultural, educational and social. It played many roles in society as place of worship, centre of learning, store house of state property, meeting place, court of justice, promoter of fine arts, etc. The temple also served as an agency for easier and more efficient extraction of surplus from the peasants in the agrarian economy and this contributed to the extension of agriculture. In the course of such extension the temples speed up the process of disintegration of tribal society and its reorganization as a caste society. In the newly formed caste society, the temple served as an integrating player linking the high and low in service. The temples maintained the morality of the society and religious faith of the people. The temples of medieval south India had been a great strengthening factor in keeping the people united and played a vital role as the centre of all social activities. The temples had given employment to a lot of people, as they needed people for the construction, maintenance and day to day function. They also employed the architects for the construction of temples, the artisans for the art and craft activities, sculptors and many servants for the engaging in various activities of the temple. The temples were also a place of religious conversation and musical discussions. All these have facilitated the propagation of religion, music, dance and other fine arts in the society.This edited volume contains 20 articles covers different aspects of South Indian Temple and Society, which include the following facets like: Power and Legitimacy of Medieval South Indian Temples; Role of Religion in the Chola State and Society; Science behind Temple Worship; Cultural Aspects of Hindu Temples; Administrators and other Functionaries of the Hindu Temples; Temple Women; Socio-political Dimension of Early Kerala Temples; Religious Endowments; Role of Temple in Agrarian Expansions; Socio-cultural Facets of Vijayanagar Temples; Social Customs and Festivals in the Temple Art of Vijayanagar-Nayak Period; Early Buddhist Temples in East Coast of South India; Folk Traditions of South India and other social and historical related aspects. The strength of this edited volume spotlight on the wide ranges of aspects on the subject as well as projections of the learned scholars on the theme of this book. It is hoped that the readers would be immensely benefitted from the learned exposition of temple institutions as a centre of all social, economic and cultural activities.Introduction Power and Legitimacy of Medieval South Indian Temples in the Society * Chidambaram Temple: Tracing the Role of Religion in the Chola State and Society * Science Behind Temple Worship * Cultural Aspects of Hindu Temples in Medieval Tamil Country * The Medieval Tamil Society and Temple Management * Administrators, Artisans and Servants: Temple’s Functionaries in Medieval South India * Temple and Earning Women in Medieval South India * Territories of the Divine: Temple Sanketams and Their Socio-political Dimensions in Early Kerala Society * Temple and Religious Endowments during the Pandyas * Horizontal Expansion of Temple Institutions and its Role to the Agrarian Changes: Study on Early Medieval South India * The Socio-cultural Facet of Temples with Reference to Vijayanagara Period * Social Customs and Festivals in the Temple Art of the Vijayanagara-Nayak Period in Tamilnadu * The Renowned Inscriptions of Sri Ninra Narayana Perumal Temple at Thiruttangal: A Historical Cram * Early Buddhist Temples in the East Coast of South India * Religious Status of Paraiyas in Medieval Hindu Tamilagam * Discourses on Policies of ‘Withdrawal’, ‘Non-Intervention’ and ‘Protection’ : A Colonial State’s Perspective on Hindu Religious Institutions in Madras Presidency * Migration: An Aspect of the Burden of Taxation under the Cholas * Villupattu Tradition: A Performing Art of Propitiation of Deities in Kanyakumari District * The Origins of Social Insurance for the Labouring Classes * Palm-Leaf Manuscripts of Tamil Nadu: A Panoramic View. Changing Tribal Life in British Orissa
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8174790268; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The book traces the British Government's policy towards the aboriginal people of Orissa, particularly the Kandhs, and the reaction it caused in the people. The study of the British tribal policy is worthwhile because the main problem faced by the administration then persists even today - the problem of how to improve tribal life without causing, as an inevitable outcome, progressive detribalisation; how to modernise tribal life with destroying in the process the distinctive features of tribal traditon and culture.Printed Pages: 163. 104237

Interrogating the Canon: Literature and Pedagogy of Dalits
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351281641; Hardcover; New; New;
Interrogating the Canon: Literature and Pedagogy of Dalits is a collection of research articles written on different occasions primarily exploring the alternative histories of language and literature informed by the postcolonial thrust of interrogating the canon. Though varied in themes, the running thread of the articles has been critiquing the exclusivist nature of the literary establishment, and arguing a case for literary inclusion of the dalit writing. The thrust of the dalit writing being mainstreaming the marginal, the author of this book approaches the subject with a three pronged focus: underplaying the mainstream writing; exploring the politics of subordination and struggles for equality; and academicising the dalit writings. The articles in this collection will be of immense use to scholars, teachers and others working in the area.Printed Pages: 248. 106124

Relevance of Traditional Cultures for the Present and the Future
Konark Publication/D.K. Publishers Distributors; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789322008802; New;
All nations and societies have considered it crucial to evaluate the role and relevance of tradition for their own generation and beyond. This discourse has a fundamentally different content and quality in non-Western societies as against the shape it takes in the West. Indeed, because of the differing trajectories of historical evolution in the Western and non-Western world, the "Relevance" question itself applies essentially to the latter. The questions raised by delving into the reasons and effects of this situation provided the driving impulse for a conference organized by the IIC-International Research Division which has now been published as this fascinating volume. It contains papers by scholars from backgrounds as diverse as from Benin, Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt, Mauritius, Senegal, Lebanon, Mexico, Argentina, as well as Greece, Russia, Germany, the UK and the USA, besides some countries in Asia. This book is a must-read for students and scholars of sociology and political science. Printed Pages: 272. 117853

Cultivating Consciousness: An East-West Journey
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607176; First Edition; Hardcover; Nerw; New; 19 x 25 Cm
Consciousness is the distinctive and defining future of human condition. Its study is at once fascinating and frustrating, because consciousness is too familiar to ignore and too complex and elusive to understand and explain. Many consider understanding consciousness the greatest challenge facing twenty-first-century science. Cultivating Consciousness is an absorbing East — West dialogue on the conceptual, methodical and theoretical issues. In this unique collection of scholarly articles by eminent researchers in and exponents of consciousness studies we find transdisciplinary discussions on the nature of consciousness, the methods of studying it, the relevance of consciousness to our values and its role in enhancing human potentials and wellness. Ramakrishna Rao discusses consciousness from the perspective of classical Indian thought in separate chapters devoted to Yoga, Advaita and Buddhism, and contrasts the Indian views with those in the West. Over all, the book gives the nature of things to come, the controversies and complexities involved and the imminent clash of paradigms. This volume is more than a study in contrast; it is an intellectual bridge that facilitates the travel and exchange between the spiritual and scientific traditions of East and West and between first-person and third-person perspectives.Printed Pages: 390. 100448

Self, person and personality. 6. Cognition, emotion and volition. 7. Applied Indian psychology. 8. Meditation and applied yoga. 9. Self-realization: illustrative case studies. 10. Personal and social transformation: Gandhi’s psychology of nonviolence. Glossary of Sanskrit and Pali terms. References. Index. Professors Ramakrishna Rao and Anand Paranjpe are two distinguished psychologist-philosophers who pioneered what has come to be known as Indian psychology. In this authoritative volume, they draw the contours of Indian psychology, describe the methods of study, define the critical concepts, explain the central ideas, and discuss their implications to psychological study and application to life. The main theme is organized around the theme that psychology is the study of the person. They go on to present a model of the person as a unique composite of body, mind and consciousness. Consciousness is conceived to be qualitatively and ontologically different from all material forms. The goal of the person is self-realization, which consists in the realization of the true self as distinct and separate from the manifest ego. It is facilitated by cultivating consciousness, which leads to some kind of psycho-spiritual symbiosis, personal transformation, and flowering of one’s hidden human potentials. The Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) have come to stay in India. Time has come to take stock of the experiences gained so far in the working of the PRIs in various states. Have we really achieved the goals set up by the 73rd constitutional Amendment while implementing the programme of 'democratic decentralisation'?, if not, what are the impediments in achieving the goals?. How best can we remove them based on our experience so far?. What corrective steps can we take to put the programme on the right track?. Here some of the leading experts on Panchayati Raj in various states examines the achievements and failures of working the PRIs during the past fifteen years. Concrete suggestions are put forth for making the PRIs vibrant institutions for bringing about democratic decentralization in the true-sense of the term. The scholarly papers on the 'state of art' of the PRIs in different states in India are presented systematically in this book. Evolution of Indian Philosophy: With an Introduction By M.N. Roy
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8124603944; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
In the pattern of Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy, this book focuses on the evolution of philosophy in India with reference to socio-political and economic conditions, through which one can learn that life and thought are invariably interconnected with polity and persons, economy and environment. The first chapter demonstrates the socio-political, geographical and racial causes for the formation of human thinking, followed by a chapter on what philosophy is and the nature of Indian philosophy. The Vedas and Upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita, and about five schools of Vedanta, including Kashmir Shaivism were discussed at length in three different chapters. Another three chapters deal with Carvakas, Jainism and Buddhism; and one on Samkhya and Vaisheshika. This book is unique in the sense that it contains a review in the conclusion; and M.N. Roy has evaluated the philosophical heritage in its introduction. M.N. Roy has remarked that the "chapters are of great importance methodologically, and as such constitute the more valuable part of a commendable work of scholarship." It is useful as a reference book for students and scholars as well as general readers interested in understanding the evolution of ancient Indian thought, and broadens the horizons of their knowledge of Indian philosophy.Printed Pages: 280. 100407
