Invincibility, Challenges and Leadership
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8125041877; Hardcover; New; New;
Invincibility, Challenges and Leadership is a product of a thorough study and understanding of history, combined with the author’s extensive personal and professional experience in the army and government. K. V. Krishna Rao has used his wide-ranging research and experience to give the reader an over-view of the development and rise of a few civilisations and empires in the course of human history, and to examine the reasons for their downfall. He takes an in-depth look at the causes and consequences of major wars in the twentieth century; and the progress of the wars, explaining the course and impact of major battles fought. The author then closely looks at the life and role of major political and military rulers, to illustrate the development of these great leaders and examine the impact they had on events. These examples are used to identify the role of leadership in defining events, the characteristics and virtues of good leadership, and the consequences of the presence of these leaders in directing events.Printed Pages: 452. 101898

Writing and Editing News
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8125059040; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In the 1980s, a field action project, which later developed into a socio-legal service to address Violence against Women (VAW), was initiated and developed by an academic institute of social work in strategic partnership with the police in Mumbai and Maharashtra. This service, termed the ‘Special Cells’, worked in tandem with the police force, and in the past three decades, has been replicated in eight states across India. Women Survivors of Violence is a first-person account of the evolution of the Special Cells. In the mid-1980s, the author was the first social worker of the TISS-initiated ‘field action project’—working on the issue of violence against women from within the police system. The result was the introduction of Special Cells in the police system. This narrative traces the 29-year-old journey of this institution, and provides a deeply personal account of the effectiveness of a multi-agency coordinated response to VAW, in the form of a partnership between an academic institute, the police system, and the violated woman. This books adds to the limited literature available in India on the processes and lessons learnt from developing and implementing an intervention on VAW. It details the processes of understanding the violated woman and the police; setting up of systems to work with women from within the police system; and engaging with the state as the instrument that can secure the right of women to a safe and secure life. It critically reflects on the learnings of the Special Cells from the women, police, the state, law, and social work practices, in the context of the ongoing struggles to respond to violence against women. An informative and deeply important account, this book will be of interest to students and educators in departments of Social Work and Women’s Studies, government personnel, trainers in police academies, and administrators. Those interested in women’s issues will also find it fascinating.Printed Pages: 232. 102272

Writing and Editing News
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125064184; Softcover; New;
Methods of news gathering and writing, and presenting them have seen unprecedented changes in the past two decades. Newsrooms today deliver news across streams and formats and as it breaks. The frenetic pace at which news is generated makes it a challenge to produce error-free content. While journalists play various roles—as reporters, as editors on the desk, in news evaluation, in designing layouts and presenting news—the foundations of news writing, the basic practices of reporting, editing, and accountability and ethics apply to all. Writing and Editing News takes one back to the basics of news writing and editing.The book answers the questions: What is newsworthy information? How should a TV report be structured? Why is the humble sub vital for a report? How should the journalist guard against vested interests? From detailing the various styles of writing reports, to editing them for various formats, this book is a primer on basic journalistic practices. Drawing on the author’s long career, this book provides illustrations, commentaries and an appendix of carefully-chosen exercises in writing and editing news. The Ellora Monoliths: Rashtrakuta Architecture in the Deccan
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1988; 8121201179; Hardcover; New; New;
This book seeks to lift into focus the monolithic legacy of the Rashtrakutas at Ellora, from out of the reason that these monoliths perhaps are best suited to understand and reconstruct the artistic, architectural, traditional, religious and cult interactions and growth-spectra that had taken place in the period from the 8th to the 10th century A.D., very much more eloquently than the study of the cave temple types. Without the stabilizing role of these monoliths, in the over view of the status of temple art, in that period which the Rashtrakutas adorned by their vigorous patronage, eclecticism and multi-pronged political thrusts all over India in their heyday, the cave-art syndrome would tend to cloy even under the best circumstances, as something repetitive, potteries and commandeered which surely it was not. The book deals with the five monoliths at Ellora, in their own historical architectural, iconographic-religious perspectives, and elucidates how they were greatly diversified and pregnant with rich potential for the reconstruction of the are situation; and it compares them also with their compeer monoliths elsewhere in South India, in the same ilk, as in the Pallava and Pandya zones of the past. The chief aim of the book is to give a satisfactory formal picture of these monoliths and to vest them with the credit of being land-marks in the arche-types they sought to represent. Profusely illustrated and with a helpful set of charts and glossary, it is designed to cover a felt need in art studies at Ellora.Printed Pages: 320. 105703

Secularism in Indian Art
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170172454; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is directed towards inquiring into the definition of the scope of secularism in a holistic way, in so far as it could apply to ancient Indian creative art, often labelled as religious art. It is, however, seen that this art often shows in its composition, partly or wholly, a deliberate unrelatedness to its immediate locus, and conveys the mind of the artist, his absorption of the aesthetic and literary, traditional, mystic and the rasa-charged pulsating life-stream legacy, and display of macro-cosmic temper, supra-regional commonality and norm-building penchant, in his eventual creations. Religion can produce profound thought, but not art which, through the medium of religion, shows insight and the impacts of secular experience. Examining by a sampling the entire range of art, sectorally and chronologically, to detect the secular manifestations embedded in the art presentations, the author finds that there is an integrated secularism in the art of India’s past, invoked by the artists who had been groomed in its culture and who had developed a macro-perception, by the totality of the impacts of the Dharmasastras, Arthasastras, Kamasastras, and Natyasastras, along with the hieratic works and the fertility cults and mystic deity-devotee links, analogous to mundane romantic attachment, and the ancient artist who owned all this as a private legacy, had evolved his own techniques for formal creations of them in art. Illustrated with sixty-four plates and line drawings, besides Notes on Plates and Appendices, the eight chapters of the book dissect the processes behind art creations, to reveal humanism and secularism. Policing in the 21st Century: Myth, Realities and Challenges
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8174791256; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book is a compendium of 17 essays, which are well researched, analyzed and documented by the author on the basis of his rich experience in the fields of internal security and policing. The author raises certain pertinent questions, which are in the contemporary law and order scenario of the country, need the serious attention of the governments, police leaders, intellectuals and social activists and the society, at large. Whether the police with the existing organizational structure, manpower, resources and present style of functioning can cope up with the new challenges? To what extent, the police personnel are equipped with the cerebral skills and professionalism to effectively deal with the new brand of cyber-crimes, money-laundering and terrorism that go beyond the contours of countries and continents? What innovative mechanisms, strategic management policies and organizational changes are required to equip and professionalize police to meet these challenges? If not, where we have gone wrong in such crucial areas? This work unfolds a number of such sensitive issues and comes out with bold and unbiased findings which would be an eye-opener to administrators and police leaders. Simultaneously, the book draws the attention of the people and society to certain crucial aspects of policing such as community policing, police-public partnership, expectations of the society from the police, myth and realities of corruption in police, image crisis of police, the need of transforming the police into an effective instrument of public service and the concept of `privatization' and `civilianization' with wider application of Information Technology, scientific and forensic aids to investigate so as to liberate the police from a scourge of human and civil rights violations. Vision for Police-2020 is definitely on above lines. The main focus and attraction of this book is that many new thoughts and ideas have been incorporated in the book which are definitely debatable among police leaders, social scientists and human/civil right activists.Printed Pages: 264. 104230

Japan: Super Economic Power
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121206006; Hardcover; New; New;
If two representative images of Japan devastated in World War II and Japan as today's economic giant are placed side by side, it would only elicit a surprise so intense as to approach skepticism. In terms of economic resurgence and reconstruction, Japans feat in the post World War II era is probably more glorious, even than the erstwhile West Germany. The uthors have adopted a multidimensional approach to study Japans phenomenal economic growth. Significantly this book analyses the economic growth of Japan based on the ground rality in that corintry and not on the models of western industrialized carintries. Through their in cursive analysis, the authors show that Japan has modernized its economy by obilizing its socio-economic energies in its own unique way and without following any western model.Printed Pages: 254. 105871

16064 Kaarlo Arffman
Auttamisen Vallankumous
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2008; 9525031454; New;
Printed Pages: 343. 114583

Yliopistot ja Kirkon Magisterium Reformaation Alkuvaiheessa 3
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 1990; 9519021779; New;
Martin Lutherin aloittama uskonpuhdistusliike mullisti 1520-luvulla katolista Eurooppaa. Uusi usko hahmottui Raamatun selväksi koetun sanan pohjalta. Printed Pages: 293. 114624

Maan valo ja Muisti: Eino Mäkisen Valokuvia
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2008; 9522220027; New;
Printed Pages: 227. 114291

Sanankuulijasta Sananjulistajaksi: Naisten asema Inkerin luterilaisissa maalaisseurakunnissa 1917-1939
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2008; 9525031489; New;
Inkerin luterilaisen kirkon traditio ja seurakuntaelämä säilyivät neuvostoyhteiskunnassa pääasiassa karismaattisten naisten varassa. Heistä tunnetuimpia olivat serkukset Maria Kajava ja Katri Kukkonen. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään näiden naisten taustaa ja elämänhistoriaa vallankumousvuodesta 1917 toiseen maailmansotaan saakka. Tekijä kuvaa naisten aseman vahvistumista Inkerin luterilaisessa kirkossa maalaisseurakuntien näkökulmasta. Perinteisesti kodin ja perheen parissa pysytelleet naiset nousivat seurakuntien vastuunkantajiksi neuvostoyhteiskunnassa tapahtuneiden radikaalien muutosten keskellä. Vain siten luterilainen kirkko saattoi pysyä osana inkeriläistä identiteettiä. Printed Pages: 244. 114584

D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8124603170; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
History of Jainism has been presented here in three parts. The first part tries to prove through the archaeological and literary sources the historicity of Tirthamkara, Parsvanatha and Mahavira, explaining their life and education besides religious, political, social, artistic and literary conditions of their times. The second part surveys the history of the Jaina dharma, its expansion and significance. The effects of Jaina dharma increased when Mauryas were ruling Magadha and Kharawelas ruled Orissa. No doubt, the period from the 9th to 12th centuries ce was a golden time in the history of Jainism and even traders, labourers and craftsmen were highly influenced by it during Kusana period. Seen geographically, Cauhana, Paramara and Calukya were acting as watchmen for Jainism in the north and in the south it was being nourished by Calukya, Rastrakuta and Ganga (Kingdoms). Many Jaina temples were constructed, monuments erected in honour of their deities. This part illustrates the many ways in which Jainism was served by the Jaina monks, saints, scholars and the politicians and answers questions such as: What kind of religious and social unions were made after the division and what were their traditional characteristics? How were the different leagues and monastries of Jaina sages made? What was the lineage of various castes and how they originated? The third part, associated with the middle ages of Jainism, describes that even though there was Muslim rule, still many organizations were sponsored with the influence of Jainism. Truthfully, there was a decline in Jainism during the middle ages but it remained protected. Many pilgrimages and historical places were established with the great influence of Jainism. Dr A.H. Nizami has written here about the Muslim reign, conditions of Jainism and also about the admirable Jainas. Dr Surendra Gopal has described the social and financial conditions prevailing at this period. Dr Shyam Sunder Nigam has penned on the middle ages of India and Dr Prakash Chandra Jain has written about the Jaina religion in the Middle Ages in Malwa region. This monumental work will be a treat for the minds and eyes of people curious about Jainism.Printed Pages: 416 with 3 maps. 100383

Knowledge and Reality: A Comparative Study of Divine and Some Buddhist Logicians
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8120811747; Hardcover; New; New;
The present work consists of an analytical study and critique of certain aspects of Buddhist tradition as they bear upon some central problems of logic and ontology. The author examines the logical, epistemological and ontological doctrines of Dignaga, Dharmakirti and Ratnakirti on the one hand and of W.V. Quine on the other. She agrees with Quine that a sharp line of demarcation between analytic and synthetic statements is untenable and she argues that a position similar to Quine`s obtains in the writings of the Buddhist logicians. She provides convincing arguments to the effect that the Buddhist logicians` rejection of substance ontology leads to the rejection of any claim to the ultimacy of the analytical-synthetic distinction. Divided into seven chapters and documented with Preface, Bibliography and General Index, this work is a rare contribution in the field of Comparative Philosophy.Printed Pages: 120. 102377

Mirza Sheikh I'tesmuddin's Wonders of Vilayet
Chronicle Books; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8180280322; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This is the first book-length account of the West by an Indian. Mirza Sheikh I’tesamuddin, a munshi who had served the East India Company before becoming a Mughal courtier, was entrusted by Emperor Shah Alam II with a diplomatic mission to the British Court. He set sail in January 1766, and though the mission was aborted, the journey of nearly three years resulted in a remarkable memoir. Written in Persian, ‘Shigurf Nama-e-Vilayet’ or ‘Wonderful Tales about Europe’ is a unique historical document and a vastly entertaining travel narrative. Though never published in the original, an abridged and flawed English translation appeared in 1827. This book is the first complete English version. The Mirza was enchanted by Britain, but he was not a colonial subject. A highly educated and curious observer of alien cultures, he wrote about his visits to the theatre, the circus, freak shows, the ‘madrassah of Oxford’, the Scottish Highlands and at a more serious level the factors that had led to India’s decline and Europe’s ascendancy, and the socio-political system of Britain. Alice in Bhuleshwar: Navigating a Mumbai Neighbourhood
Yoda Press; New Delhi, India; 8190618636; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Kaiwan Mehta takes the reader for a walk through the streets and past the buildings of the ‘native town’ of colonial Bombay, reading their histories and excavating their memories, while continuing to negotiate their present context. This historic neighbourhood of Mumbai, fondly referred to as Bhuleshwar, has remained a residential and religious hub as before, while thriving as the city’s essential commercial marketplace today. It retains a complex history of migration and community, which is evident in the architectural form, motifs and designs of the area. The buildings are literally registers of history; they are maps of a time gone by, and yet they continue to find themselves relevant and alive in the contemporary context. Alice in Bhuleshwar is also a story of the people who have lived in these buildings: unsung icons like Premiji and Saroj Pathak, famed artistes like Jayashankar ‘Sundari’, and others who have inhabited these buildings which breathe in the salty air of Mumbai and speak to those who care to listen. The Architecture of I.M. Kadri
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789385285301; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Architecture of I.M. Kadri traces the body of work of Iftikhar M. Kadri, founder, partner and principal architect of IMK Architects, who began his practice in Mumbai in the 1950s. As an architect who shaped his practice largely in the early decades after India's independence, in the commercial capital of a young nation, he contributed greatly to the design of emerging typologies like the high-rise apartment, the office tower and the hospitality industry in Mumbai and India, going on to build in the Middle East, Hong Kong, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and so on.Kadri's journey and practice as an architect in the five decades following India's independence account for a different history of architecture in India than the one otherwise available. His journey is also the journey of Bombay/Mumbai as the emerging commercial capital of India - a city whose tryst with architecture is very different from that of Delhi or Ahmedabad, the other two sites of important Modern architecture in India. Kadri's career charts not only an important journey in India's history, but he is also someone who contributed to the discourses on Modern and Traditional architecture in India, working within the forces of real estate and commerce, and with state, private and corporate clients. His works help us open the debates on what is the role of architecture, its ideas of beauty and strength, its existence within the world of politics and economics.Although Kadri has been a stalwart in the field of architecture in his own right, not often has his deep involvement with architectural thought in India been recognised, or for that matter, recorded and analysed. Afterbirth and Other Stories
Showcase/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174367950; Softcover; New;
Rarely does prose capture the vagaries of the human spirit with such acuity and pose. Lyrically written and intensely imagined, Afterbirth and Other Stories invites us to see our dark and luminous selves in an intimate relationship. The stories resonate with our lives and experiences as they take us from a Spitian village to a cultural centre in the Kangra valley and further south of the great metropolises of Delhi and Bangalore. Women emerge as protagonists in most of the stories, laying bare their hidden aspirations, designs and vulnerabilities.The dubious demeanour of a narcissistic woman leads to unexpected events, while a girl's twisted DNA costs her many a friendship. A maidservant who has connections with the underworld teaches her employer a valuable lesson. Through the eyes of a rich socialite and a journalist we see the bizarre and glorious workings of the human mind, while an adolescent girl's adoration of her mother turns disastrous. The characters acquire a life of their own as their stories run across macabre spaces and forage into the depths of their beings. As we grow angry with and share the joys of the actors, bleak truths are revealed and poetic justice is delivered. Printed Pages: 266. 108655

Genealogical Records and Traditional Knowledge System: Study in Four Sacred Centres of India
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121212731; Hardcover; New; New;
The present study is a maiden step by anthropological Survey of India into a unique field of record maintaining system of great temples in India. In almost all the great temples, there is a tradition of keeping records of the pilgrims. Interestingly these records, referred differently in different areas, are maintained over centuries and are still continuing as a living tradition. The origin of this knowledge system has its root in the age old jajmani relation of Hindu society. The system is embodied in the temple activities as a whole, therefore, the socio-religious significance of the particular holy centre in relation to the pan-Indian scenario has also been probed into, which added further importance to the studies. All the four articles in this volume are based on first hand empirical data. Through this maiden venture, Anthropological Survey of India has made a footmark in this interesting field of knowledge system which opens up a new vista to the anthropological society for further queries and updating the knowledge.Printed Pages: 184. 106272

Puranic Concept of Dana
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 1993; 817081278X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Puranic Concept of Dana provides an exhaustive expostion of The Hindu practice of gift-giving. Here in The Author includes virtually every reference to dana found in the Vadas, Smritis, Dharmasutras and Puranas. These texts reveal a broad spectrum of religiously sanctioned gifting. Specific guidelines exist governing simple hospitality as well as such grandiose offerings as a king's weight in gold or a mountain of jewels. These practices were widespread and important for the material support of Hindu society on every level. Consequently, elaborate directions and rituals developed to insure the propriety of gifts, givers and recipients. These teachings constitute the substance of Dr. Acharya's research, and through these passages the reader may glimpse the larger patterns of Hindu culture. While the modern student may find the style of writing overly detailed and repetitive, one should remember their Context and sense the 'Voice' of rishis.Printed Pages: 296. 103922

State of Urban Services in India's Cities: Spending and Financing
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2010; 0198065388; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
With increasing population and expanding demand for urban infrastructure services, the capacities of local governments in many developing countries are overburdened. Adequate infrastructure is not only necessary for increasing productivity but also improving the quality of living. Given the primacy of public service delivery for cities to become engines of growth, this book answers two critical questions: Does low spending explain the state of poor public service delivery? How can urban local bodies have access to greater resources so as to enable them to improve public service delivery? Using case studies of four cities—Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Bangalore—the book examines urban services such as water supply, sewerage, sanitation, solid waste management, municipal roads, and street lighting. It compares the state of these services with international norms and suggests new ways in which they can be financed and improved. More specifically, the book examines the role of land as a revenue-generating source in India’s cities. 033658
