Orissa Under the East India Company
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1971; 812150404X; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Orissa Under the East India Company is a systematic account of the main aspects of the British administration in Orissa from the time of its conquest till the end of the East India Company's rule, which forms for various reasons, a very important period in the history of the British Empire in India. No adequate attention has been paid so far to this aspect of the history of Orissa. Political history everywhere having being paid more than the necessary attention, administrative and economic aspects are less known subjects in history. In case of Orissa, this work has tried to redress the balance in a vital chapter of her history. For an integrated account of the British Indian history, the experiments or innovations effected under local conditions cannot be neglected. Since Orissa emerged as one of the eleven units of British India in this century, her 19th century history which has remained mostly unknown deserves thorough enquiry. Such local surveys of different parts of India in the 19th century would help to indicate the process of change which was coming over India during British period. The East India Company ruled Orissa for 55 years. The Company's Administration, instead of bringing any change for progress in Orissa, left for the future a legacy of stagnation and economic deterioration. The work shows the process of that decline and throws light on those features which caused so much harm to the territory and its people. Original works and manuscripts records pertaining to the period and relevant Parliamentary Papers have been consulted to construct this work. Especially the unpublished Government records exhaustively utilized to bring out authentic historical account of the East India Company's Administration in Orissa. Visual Anthropology in India and its Development
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8121204348; Hardcover; New; New;
In World Anthropology different dimensions are fast emerging, and one of them is Visual Anthropology in which systematic and concerted efforts were made specially in sixties. However, sporadic efforts of people from Anthropological as well as non-anthropological allied disciplines were precursors in this field. The 'new-wave films' or 'parallel cinema' were developed in Italy in post-war years, and later France and America followed suit.India did not remain immune to this movement. Satyajit Ray created a genere of films Beginning from the Rather Panchali and others, and such Indian films show their relevance to Visual Anthrppology.This book consists of nine important chapters which are mostly the trendsetters. It also includes the proceedings of the First International Symposium of Visual Anthropology. In all, it makes a formal beginning of Visual Anthropology in India. The five Appendices are fascinating and have references for supplementary readings. This book would be useful to the visual anthropologists, sociologists, historians, applied social scientists, Media people, those connected with social communication, development, enlightened laymen.Printed Pages: 245. 105778

Sai Baba: A Ray from the Supreme
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170173493; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Kali Yuga commenced at the time of Krishna's death, February 20, 3102 B. C. and the world had to wait for nearly thousand years for the emergence of Sathya Sai Baba as a major and full Avatar. Sathya Sai Baba was born on November 23, 1926, and Sri Aurovindo, who was working for years to bring Krishna consciousness on earth, the advent of Sathya Sai Baba. Like Krishna, Sai Baba announced his Divinity on May 17, 1968 at the first World Conference of Sri Sathya Sai Organization: This is a human form ascribed by man to God is manifest. He also described on the Gurupoornima day of 1963 a promise and a pledge given by Lord Shiva to sage Bhardwaja that Shiva and Shakthi would incarnate in the lineage of sage Bhardwaja thrice in the Kali Yuga: as Shiva alone at Shirde; Shiva and Shakthi together as Sathya Sai Baba at Puttaparthi; and as Shakthi alone as Prema Sai at Gunaparthi. And finally, on the Christmas day of 1972 Baba made a starling disclosure. He said that Christ's statement about the second coming was simple. He who has sent me will come again. He will be short with a crown of hair. His name will be truth. He will wear a red robe, a blood-red robe. The lamb is a symbol of love, of the voice Ba Ba. That Ba Ba is this Baba, the short, curly hair crowned, red-robed Baba comes again. Sathya Sai Baba is a Ray direct from the supreme. He is Power, will, Thought and Feeling combined in a solar flash. This book is an intimate, authentic, truthful and moving account of the power, glory, splendour and magnificence of God who walks the earth today. Printed Pages: 188. 107933

Political Developments in Afghanistan: Implications for India
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904060; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Political Developments in Afghanistan: Implications for India is an account on the longstanding relationship between the two Southern Asian countries. At the outset, the author briefly takes the readers to the colonial period political development in the region in an attempt to analyse the factors which laid the foundation of their historical engagement. The book focuses on the relations between the two Southern Asian countries after partition of the Indian subcontinent. The post-partition political developments in the Indian subcontinent (India-Pakistan and Afghanistan-Pakistan antagonism) and the emergence of the Cold War politics in the region that impelled their relations to a new level find adequate space. The author argue that though Afghanistan is India’s indispensable neighbour, its political ties and strategic interests were weakly rooted during the Cold War period. The author has also discussed in detail the debate of India’s foreign policy towards the Soviet Union during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.The change of political conditions in Afghanistan after the dethronement of the Taliban regime once again provided an opportunity for India to come into contact with the Afghans. Yet, India seems not to have made full use of the potential in its relations with Afghanistan because of Pakistan antagonistic policy. Pakistani leaders have never reconciled to the grievances of the post-partition political problems and crisis with India, and consider India as the “biggest threat” to their existence. Pakistan not only adopts a hostile policy towards India, but, its policy towards Afghanistan too has been shaped on the basis of its relations with India. Thus, Pakistan’s leaders maliciously observe Afghanistan policy towards India and actively campaign with the international community to “stonewall” India’s involvement in the politics of Afghanistan for fear of India’s influence. It is because of such an aggressive and offensive policy adopted by Pakistan that every peace effort in the region has been thwarted even before it could be tested.Printed Pages: 322. 104337

Death Anniversary: Charama Vaarshikam
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199469296; Softcover; New;
While boarding a train from Kuttippuram, Damu falls to a violent death under its wheels. In a parallel existence in Madras, he feels stifled, both in his demonic factory environment and marriage to Savithri. Unhappy, desolate, and belonging nowhere, he begins to think that he is dead. On the edge of hysteria, he meets a man he believes to be his boyhood playmate Ismail, and enters a fantasy world. Entrapped by memories of his sexual adventures with Ismail, Damu comforts himself and startles everybody else. In a quest to seek answers about his own identity and everything that is happening around him, he journeys back to his village. Who is the true Savithri—his shy bride or the nonchalant woman haggling at the market? Is it really Ismail living in his house, sharing his meals and liquor? If Damu died twenty years ago, how is he living this life? Is he dead or alive? Shuttling between the past and the present, and mixing the real with the delusional, Death Anniversary suggests that losing the will to live is akin to death. Printed Pages: 208. 111591

The Punjab Story
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363319; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
6th June, 1984: The Indian Army storms the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Called Operation Bluestar, the historic and unprecedented event ended the growing spectre of terrorism perpetrated by the extremist Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers once and for all. But it left in its wake unsolved political questions that continued to threaten Punjab’s stability for years to come. How, in a brief span of three years, did India’s dynamic frontier State become a national problem? Who was to blame: the Central Government for allowing the crisis to drift despite warnings, or the long-drawn-out Akali agitation, or the notorious gang of militants who transformed a holy shrine into a sanctuary for terrorists? First published two months after Operation Bluestar, The Punjab Story pieces together the complex Punjab jigsaw through the eyes of some of India’s most eminent public figures and journalists. Writing with the passion and conviction of those who were involved with the drama, they present a wide-ranging perspective on the past, present and future of the Punjab tangle, the truth of many of their conclusions having been borne out by time. The Absolute in Indian Philosophy
Chaukhamba Oriental Research Studies/Chaukhamba Publications; Delhi, India; 1991; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In the present work, The Author has made an endeavour to give a comprehensive idea of the concept of the Absolute-the personal Isvara and the impersonal Brahman-as found in twenty schools of Indian thought. In dealing with the subject, the author has always kept his eyes on matters found in the original texts, and has given exhaustive quotations from those texts to support any point coming in course of the discussions. This work is therefore expected to help the readers and researchers formulate the idea of the Absolute in the proper perspective.Printed Pages: 308. 100711
