The French East India Company and the Trade of the Indian Ocean: A Collection of Essays By Indrani Ray
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121508657; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present edition of the writings of the late Indrani Ray has been planned around certain identifiable factors that determined India's changing tryst with the Indian Ocean in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. While the protagonist in these writings is the Indian merchant, the biographer is the French East India Company's Official. Using a wide array of French sources, the author reconstructed the changing world of the Indian merchant as he rubbed shoulders with the European trading companies in the palmy decades of the seventeenth century and retreated into his shell in the turbulent decades of the eighteenth. Taken together, these essays underscore both the prosperity and vitality of Indian trade in the seventeenth century as well as its inherent fragility in the face of political uncertainty and unrestrained competition in the succeeding years. The conclusions arrived at, tend to reinforce some of the better known propositions about the nature and orientation of pre-modern Indian trade and the making of its material context. Individually, the essays constitute important interventions in ongoing debates about the extent and logic of Mughal decline, the benevolence of the Mughal state towards matters maritime and about the relative importance of European trade vis-à-vis Asian trade in the economy of eighteenth century Bengal. The Introduction attempts to identify these interventions and knit the essays around the current debates on the eighteenth century crisis in Indian history. The introduction, will help to situate the relevance of the French connection in the complex trading grid of the Indian Ocean. The fact that the French were the most serious rivals of the English for empire and very nearly succeeded in the imperial game is often obscured in the flush of English victories. In terms of the historiography on maritime India, this has meant a subtle neglect of French language sources in the reconstruction of the trading world of the Indian merchant and seafarer. That this omission is entirely unwarranted is amply borne out by Indrani Ray's analysis of French archival sources and documents like the Roques' manuscript, which in terms of both range and detail is of enduring value. Kunjamma...Ode to a Nightingale-M.S. Subbulakshmi
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2003; 81-7436-273-0; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 20 Cms x 23 Cms
In Kunjamma—Ode to a Nightingale, Lakshmi Vishwanathan explains why she believes knowing M.S. Subbulakshmi has been the greatest blessing of her life. The author, whom M.S. has referred to as a ‘daughter’, retraces the life of a legend—its divine and human angularities—with love, sympathy and insight. As a child, ‘Kunjamma’—Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi—learnt to play the veena from her mother and sang in the temples of Madurai. This biography traces her journey from there to Madras, the cultural hub of South India, and the impregnable male bastion of classical music, where M.S., as she came to be popularly known, would reign as the Queen of Music for decades. Equally memorable is her foray into films. Cast as Meera, Krishna’s self-willed mortal consort, M.S. became the incarnation of the people’s vision of this saint-poet—an identity she would willingly embrace at the behest of her husband. Kunjamma—Ode to a Nightingale deals with every aspect of M.S.’s glorious career—be it her mastery of the classical tradition or her unforgettable screen performances. Most importantly, it speaks of her immortal bhajans, sung in virtually every Indian language with singular devotion. That is why M.S. has won a place for herself in the hearts of the people—the final destination that fate had ordained for her. Printed Pages: 127. 000328

Taking Social Development Seriously: The Experience of Sri Lanka
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 813210465X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book presents a historical and analytical overview of social development in Sri Lanka within a social policy conceptual framework. The author identifies three distinct phases of development of social policy in the country—that of the early, late and post colonial state. Further, he shows how Sri Lankan social development has since been reframed by a combination of neo-liberalism and a protracted civil war. This shift from the country’s unique social welfare structure to one marked by warfare is examined in the context of the impact of a new `welfare regime` on its society. Printed Pages: 248. 033360

Discerning the Buddha: A Study of Buddhism and of the Brahmanical Hindu Attitude to it
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8121501385; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
What is the Brahmanical Hindu understanding or misunderstanding of the Buddha and Buddhism? Modern enlightened 'Hindus' wedded to the Vaidika/Sanatana Dharma tradition hold that the Buddha was a 'Hindu' reformer, Buddhism a 'Hindu sect'; that original Buddhist teaching was Vedantic or 'Hinduistic', and that the Buddhists have misunderstood the fulfillment of 'the Hindu religion' and distorted the original teachings of the Great Master! On the other hand, stalwarts like Swami Vivekananda and Sir Radhakrishnan Also say that the Buddha is one of the makers of 'Hinduism'. The former even said that the Buddha was the greatest 'Hindu Seer, Philosopher, Vedantin, Karmayogin, and the only God who walked on the earth. Satkari Mookerjee has declared that 'every Hindu is a Buddhist'. The ancient and medieval scriptures of Brahmanical Hindus, however, regarded the Buddha as a 'barbarian', an 'outcast', a 'nihilist', and a 'non-aryan' teacher of the religion of the evil age (kaliyuga). The Puranas inform us that the Son of Suddhodhana, born among the non-aryan tribe of 'Kikatas', was no other than the Supreme Lord Visnu who had assumed a false avatara for the sole purpose of misleading demons! This incarnation of God had criticised the Vedas, opposed the sacred Vedic ceremonies, and questioned the supremacy of the brahmanas. He was pure, compassionate and dispassionate; He practised renunciation and meditation, and was very wise; many people worshipped Him in this kaliyuga. But He was an 'atheist', opposed to the holy Veda; He taught equality of brahmanas and untouchables, men and women, and black and white castes and races. Those who followed His religion proceeded to hells! Such are the conflicting attitudes towards the Buddha and Buddhism in the land of the Dharma famous for religious tolerance and synthesis. The present volume attempts an analysis and a systematic study of the traditional Brahmanical now called 'Hindu' attitude to Buddhism in India. The bulk of the volume, however, is devoted to an exposition of the fundamental doctrines of Buddhism in the Indian context. The author follows a combined methodology, although he reviews several current approaches to the study of the history and doctrines of Buddhism. Historical interactions and mutual favours between Brahmanic and Sramanic traditions, the role of Buddhism in the transformation of early Brahmanism into new Brahmanism and the evolution of 'Hinduism', the differences between Buddhism and Brahmanism/Hinduism, the differences between the ancient and medieval representatives and modern representatives of the Brahmanical tradition to Buddhism, Buddhist responses to this modern 'Hindu' attitude, and a review of Buddhist contributions to Indianism, are some of the subjects discussed in this book. One of the most important parts of this book deals with what the author has called 'God's Alternative in Buddhism'. An outline of Buddhology as a systematic study of the idea of Buddhahood, is one of the new themes discussed here. Another often neglected subject is a brief account of the possible Buddhist influences in the Judeo-Christian religious tradition. The volume is offered as a basis for further study and scholarly dialogue in the area of intercultural and historical hermeneutics in the study of religion in South Asia. Printed Pages: 298. 024799

The Adhyatma Ramayana
Sri Satguru Publications; Delhi, India; 2008; 8170308763; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"In former times filled with affection towards her devotees the Goddess Parvati reverently questioned Shiva desirous of knowing the nature of Rama. The Lord of the Mountains himself recited to his dear consort that great mystery known as the Adhyatma Ramayana which is great amongst the Puranas. He who reads with devotion even a shloka or half a shloka of the Adhyatma Ramayana, is purified of all sins that very moment. He who daily recites reverently the Adhyatma Ramayana with a mind directed to no other object, is daid to be Jivan Mukta (Emancipated in this very life). One who casually listens to the Adhyatma Ramayana from another without showing reverence, even he is freed from sin. He who bows to the Adhyatma Ramayana, having approached it, obtains the fruit of worshipping all the Gods. This greatness of the Adhyatma side of Rama's deeds was told to the Sage Narada by the Lotus-seated Brahma. He who reads or listens to it with faith attains to the Abode of Vishnu and is worshipped by the Gods."Printed Pages: 454. 101165

Judgment According to the Deeds: An Appraisal of Article X of the Presbyterian Church of India's Confession of Faith
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480808; Hardcover; New; New;
"The Presbyterian Church of India's Confession of Faith Article X deals with the doctrine of the Last Day. Its main theme is the resurrection of the dead and the subsequent ""final judgment"" where the living and the dead ""shall be judged according to the deeds done in this present life."" But the understanding and interpretation of the word ""shall be judged according to the deeds"" has often been held in tension with the basic theological principle of the Reformation, namely, ""justification by grace alone through faith."" 110819

In Crocodile Country
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523605; Softcover; New;
In Crocodile Country is a play that is packed with high drama and portrays, through the voice of its characters, the whole gamut of emotions—good and evil—lurking inside each of us.The country is on the brink of erupting into nation-wide communal riots. Seven people —supposedly strangers— take refuge in an off-the-highway Christian-owned resort believing they will be safe in there. While they are sorting out their tangled lives and trying to deal with the consequences of their pasts, two murderous gangs are advancing on the highway— one coming up the road and other down the road. There is no place to hide and there is no place to run. When there is nothing left to lose, deep rooted instincts come to the fore. But if life is uncertain, so is death. Read on to find out how the night brings out in each of them the realisation of their self, truths about themselves that they will have to live with…if life and/or death gives them a chance.Printed Pages: 192. 106548

Institutions, Consultants and Transformation: Case Studies from the Development Sector
Response Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298678; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This collection of case studies captures a range of issues faced by ‘institutions in transformation’ in the social development sector, as they evolve and mature. Leadership transitions, gender issues at the workplace and the challenges of large systems owning up to their development agenda are some of the themes explored. The case studies included in the book comprise narrative reports on the change processes, reflective essays by the consultants and peer reviews. Practitioners have clearly identified the gaps between their initial assumptions and their actual experiences, providing interesting material for others to learn from. The voice and language of the narrator is retained, adding to the authenticity of the compilation. An overview of the tools used offers a ready guide to Organisation Development (OD) practitioners. This book is an invaluable addition to the available knowledge base both in terms of its content and the process that has been used to build the case studies. It will be of interest to consultants, students and teachers of OD and Organisational Behaviour. Human Resource Management Divisions in organisations will also find it useful. Managing Healthcare Waste: A Practical Approach
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8187966610; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Hospital Waste (more appropriately, healthcare waste) is a potent source of biological & chemical pollution. Initiatives taken so far for disinfection and management of hospital waste in India, and other developing countries have failed to achieve desired aims and outcome. There are many reasons, but primarily it is due to the fact that planners and healthcare providers tend to go for ‘end of pipeline’ solutions rather apply a ‘system approach’. Deadline laid in BMW Rules- 1998 is over long ago. But proper healthcare waste management is still a far cry, and a distant dream. Generally, there is lack of understanding of the nexus, or the connection that exists between environmental pollutants contained in the healthcare waste and its adverse impact on human health. That is why two chapters have been devoted on understanding environment & ecology; environmental pollutants, and its adverse effects on human health. Other chapters are specific to healthcare waste management issues. This book examines system application in detail, with incisive analysis; and provides step by step practical guideline for developing a comprehensive healthcare waste management system. It has chapters and sections covering all aspects of healthcare waste management, including risk management associated with handling of healthcare wastes.Waste management is an integral part of patient management Healthcare providers cannot ignore to take care of waste generated on their premises. It should be considered an extended responsibility. No one else is going to clear up the mess of one’s own household. This handbook is a result of two years research and study. Sufficient data has been collected and compiled. Success stories and case studies have been discussed. All in all, this book would be a useful tool for improved understanding of the subject.Planners (including those controlling the budget), healthcare professionals, students of hospital management, NGOs, and agencies involved in training and awareness programmes would find this book immensely useful and helpful. In fact, this is a book for all those wanting to know about environmental pollution caused by healthcare waste, and its adverse impact on human health.Printed Pages: 214. 104453

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8187586532; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT OF HISTORY OF INDIAN SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE (PHISPC) aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact, contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. The history of agriculture in the present volume (V Part II) is concerned with the development of agriculture in various aspects in Medieval and Modern India. It has been divided in two sections: Section I on Agriculture in Medieval and Modern India up to 1947 and Section II on Agriculture in Post Independence India from 1947 up to the present. Each section focuses on technology, Regional Study, Revenue administration and Produces, Peasant Study, Institutional aspect, Horticulture, Religion/Folklore, Music, Science in Agriculture, Dairy Farming, Policy Reforms, Forestry and Environment. The Section-II (post-Independence India) of the Volume V Part II, has nineteen chapters on regional study of Rajasthan (1), Jain agricultural practices (2), Agriculture in Folklore/Music of Himachal Pradesh (3), Agriculture produces - Mango, Tea and Coffee (4, 5), I.C.A.R. 's contributors (6), Soil Science in relation to Agriculture (7), Plant Protection Techniques (8), Gender and agriculture (9, 10), History of Dairy Co-operatives (11) and techniques and development of Dairy products (12), Agriculture in five Year Plans (13) and Agriculture and Policy Reforms (14), Indian Agricultural structure and Sustainable Development (15), Agricultural Economics and Plight of the Poor (16), Eco-designing for Biodiversity Conservation (17), History of forestry (18) and Agrarian Impact on Environment in contemporary India (19). Each chapter has been given thorough analysis on the basis of original sources including unofficial sources by experts. The volume is a lucid summation of existing knowledge on agriculture in medieval and modern India up to 1947 with research orientation while the Section II has a critical appraisal of post Independence Indian Agriculture up to the present. For a complete vision and understanding of the subject vis-a-vis policy/reforms/science/technology etc. both sections are essential continuity. The volume in both sections are unique in the sense that every chapter has been authored by experts who have utilized official as well as unofficial sources for a critical analysis of the development of Indian Agriculture against the back drop of ecology, technology, folklore/music and human aspect and civilization aspects. Ayodhya: The Abode of Rama and the Dharmaksetra of Lord Buddha and the Jaina Tirthankaras. A Historical and Cultural Study
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8121510651; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The religio-urban life of Ayodhya is attractive. Being the birthplace of Rama, it becomes a rich field of special interest. This book presents its culture in historical perspective. Rama's ancestors who had founded the city are mentioned in the Rgveda. Its remote antiquity is proved also by the OCP which has been found from Srngaverapura, another old town of the region. Both the cities had contacts with each other. Saketa, a part of Ayodhya, was established on the bank of river Sarayu during the sixth century BC. For a long period, Lord Buddha and the Jaina Tirthankaras had made it their dharmaksetra. The Ramayana and the Ayodhya, series of coins tell about the re-emergence of Ayodhya. Saketa was then a big township. The Kusanas were defeated at Ayodhya. Germs of the same national spirit had inspired the Guptas who had made their offensive from there. Some of them had made it their home. The Pauranika phase of Ayodhya is described in detail. By the time of the Guptas, it had emerged as a great centre of Hindu pilgrimage. Under the influence of the Bhakti cult, during the early medieval period, a number of temples including that of Rama were built there. It continued to flourish in spite of certain odds. Visitors continued to flock there and worship their gods and goddesses. This book enlists the temples and other monuments of Ayodhya and describes its antiquarian prospects. History of Ancient Indian Science Volume I: Botanical Science and Economic Growth. A Study of Forestry, Horticulture, Gardening and Plant Science
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 812150693X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
The scientific heritage of India has not been fully revealed and its contribution to the development of various stages of Indian civilization is yet to be adequately analysed by the modern generation of historians engaged in writing on the past of the country. Science and technology change the face of the economic spirit of the existing society influencing other aspects of cultural growth. Botanical science and technology and their origin and growth in India have been presented and analysed from this viewpoint in the present volume. This study is primarily based on Sanskrit sources, and Vrksayurveda of Surapala has been exhaustively used for the first time, besides Manasollasa of Somesvara and Upavanavinoda of the Sarngadhara-paddhati. It deals not only with the problems of the trees but also with various vegetables and flowers and throws much light on the art of gardening developed in ancient India. It discusses the meaning and concept of science and its relation to economic planning and development on the one hand and tries to trace the economic growth in ancient India on the other. It is hoped that this modest attempt would give a new direction to the students of history in making a new and dynamic assessment of the past. Printed Pages: 224. 002409

Introduction to Tantra: The Transformation of Desire
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 0861711629; First Edition; Paperback; New; 6 x 9 Inches
What is tantra? Who is qualified to practice it? How should it be practiced? What are the results? According to Buddhism, every human being has the potential to achieve profound and lasting happiness. And according to the tantric teachings of Buddhism, this remarkable transformation can be realized very quickly if we utilize all aspects of our human energy -- especially the energy of our desires. Introduction to Tantra is the best available clarification of a subject that is often misunderstood. This new edition of this classic text includes a new foreword by Philip Glass and a new cover design, but leaves untouched Lama Yeshe''s excellent original text, edited by Jonathan Landaw. Tantra recognizes that the powerful energy aroused by our desire is an indispensable resource for the spiritual path. It is precisely because our lives are so inseparably linked with desire that we must make use of desire''s tremendous energy not just for pleasure, but to transform our lives. Lama Yeshe presents tantra as a practice leading to joy and self-discovery, with a vision of reality that is simple, clear, and extremely relevant to 21st-century life. Printed Pages: 192. 014109

Wholesome Fear: Transforming Your Anxiety About Impermanence & Death
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2010; 0861716302; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Our anxiety around sickness, old age, and death can be a “wholesome fear”—a fear with a positive quality that ultimately enriches and nourishes our lives. Lama Zopa Rinpoche shows us how we can use our anxiety as a high-octane fuel to really live what's most important, and Kathleen McDonald presents meditations that integrate these teachings and lead to peace, compassion, and joy for ourselves and others. Doing so will help us to live well and, when the time comes as it inevitably will, to die well too. It's never too early to start making this most important of efforts—and, fortunately, it is never too late. Printed Pages: 160. 033975

The Marvels of Cosmos: Philosophico-Theological Appraisal Based on Science, Linguistics and Anthropology
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480105; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
We experience presence and absence, emptiness and fullness of things, events, facts and causes. It is we, human beings, who make statements about things, ourselves and others. Why is there Something instead of Nothing? The obvious answer is there might have been `something', `everything' or `nothing'. Nothingness represents conceptual and numerical zero as empty placeholder in decimal system of mathematics. It also represents vacuum in science where the fluctuating energy in the vacuum is the same thing as the fluctuating amount of the mass as Albert Einstein put it E (energy) = m (mass) c2 (speed of the light squared). Nothingness is a symbol, a concept, and a numeral (0) as a constitutive reality which represents and participates in the wholeness of reality. Reality is both presence and absence, paradoxical and relational as in our direct judgment we say two kinds of things about something: WHAT (essence) it is and THAT (existence) it is but when something is NOT, the concept 0 as a number represents what is `not there'. The numerical zero fills the empty position in the decimal numeration whereas the vacuum points to fullness and wholeness in interdisciplinary disciplines of physical or social sciences.The book is comprised of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the mathematical zero and its philosophical applications. The second chapter deals with the quantum reality and Big Bang cosmology. It deals with the quantum zero and the origin of the Universe. The third chapter deals with the philosophicotheological appraisal of the nothingness. Its linguistic, numerical, physical and inner nothingness is appreciated. The final chapter four provides a general critique and evaluation.Printed Pages: 352. 106425

Land Acquisition, Displacement and Resettlement in Gujarat: 1947-2004
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299380; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is a first-ever detailed analysis of the land acquired for development projects and their impact on the displaced and project-affected people of Gujarat, from 1947 to 2004. It begins with a debate on the meaning of the term ‘development’ and focuses on displacement, marginalisation and impoverishment as direct consequences of admittedly debatable methods of progress adopted in Gujarat in the name of development. The book presents a comprehensive account of land acquired for water resources, industries, mines, HRD, transportation/communication, and urban development projects and focuses on the people displaced and affected by them. Additionally it pays special attention to the legislative hurdles in rehabilitation and compensation procedures which follow displacement, analysing the behaviour of officials towards people, the role of village leaders and the impact on people, especially tribals, dalits, the ‘backward’ castes, women and children. The information presented covers 139 sites and 1,937 households from different regions of Gujarat. The book is special in that it discusses the issue of the current and future state of land acquisition in Gujarat as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), thereby contributing to the debate on the necessity and the significance of SEZs. This book is an important addition to the available resources in the field of economics and development studies and political sociology. It will be useful as a reference book to researchers and academics working in these areas as well as the professionals involved in the field. Printed Pages: 348. 028856

Paths and Grounds of Guhyasamaja: According to Arya Nagarjuna
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8185102945; Reprint; Softcover; New;
His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama ding to Arya Nagarjuna is a very significant eighteenth century Tibetan treatise (with a brief contemporary commentary) which maps out the paths and the grounds of Guhyasamaja Tantra according to Arya Nagarjuna's tradition. It is based on the incomparable materpieces of Manjushri, Lama Tsongkhapa and his hear-like disciples. In many Buddhist Tantras and works of realised masters Guhyasamaja is refered to as 'the supreme and king of all Tantras'. Acharya Chandrakirti's Bright Lamp (sgron gsal) states, "This (Guhyasamaja) is the supreme subsidiary practice; a compendium of the meanings of all Tantras". Khedrup Rinpoche in his Short Writing (Yig chung) states",.... Moreover, if one initially understands Guhyasamaja one will automatically understand other (Tantras)". His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama has also stated that the Guhyasamaja provides structure to other Highest Yoga Tantras; it, therefore, makes it easier to understand other Tantras of the same class. In short this work is an indispensable guide for initiated Buddhist tantric practitioners especially those of Guhyasamaja.Printed Pages: 183. 103566

He translates Tao as 'the Great Integrity', that is the return to holism, honesty and creativity; our harmony with each other, with the environment and indeed within ourselves. We are perhaps the first generation in the 2500 years since this inspirational book was written, to fully appreciate the words and their message. It resonates with our 21st century hopes, dreams and new capacities as though Lao Tzu had written this remarkable book only for us.Printed Pages: 324. 102414

Is There a Right of Freedom of Expression?
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0521529840; First Paperback Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
In this provocative book, Alexander offers a sceptical appraisal of the claim that freedom of expression is a human right. He examines the various contexts in which a right to freedom of expression might be asserted and concludes that such a right cannot be supported in any of these contexts. He argues that some legal protection of freedom of expression is surely valuable, though the form such protection will take will vary with historical and cultural circumstances and is not a matter of human right. Written in a clear and accessible style, this book will appeal to students and professionals in political philosophy, law, political science, and human rights. • One of the first books to take a sceptical view of freedom of expression as a human right • Comprehensive treatment of freedom of expression • Alexander is a well-respected legal theorist Contents Introduction; Part I. Struggle in a Secular Age: Clashes of Christian Body and Soul
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2013; 819251210X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is a collection of short stories depicting spiritual struggle within the contours of sobering and sometimes fatal situations. Some stories portray less serious and humorous situations, though with redemptive themes still intertwined. The characters and situations presented do not disappoint the reader's desire for pleasurable reading, though a sense of the fleeting world mixed with spiritual confrontation or confusion may give the reader pause before moving to the next story. For readers who like realistic religious fiction with plausible characters in trying circumstances, the book provides a variety of stories in the contest of wills between living for wrong things and the confrontations inevitable with a calling in Christ. While some stories within this book have this explicit context, others provide samples of the infinite battles that confront the believer living in a secular or distorted age.Printed Pages: 175. 106426

The Substance of Politics
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2000; 0195656334; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
This classic text is a well-integrated and comprehensive account of the essential principles of political theory and organization. It presents a consistent thesis that the State exists for the benefit of the individual and not the individual for the State. It provides critical as well as factual discussions on: forms of government and inter-state relations against the background of fundamental political concepts, such as liberty, equality, law and sovereignty; the history of government from the days of Greek city-states to modern times; the modern constitutions of the UK, the USA, the French Republic, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and India; principles of governmental organization, its structure and working. As a clear, well-written and modern introduction to politics, this book serves as a primary textbook for students of political science at the undergraduate level, for both BA honours and pass courses. Hugely successful in its previous printings, it is also useful for the general reader looking for a lucid exposition of the basic ideas of politics. Printed Pages: 600. 013593
