Indo-French Relations
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1999; 817307061X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Portuguese, the Dutch, the English and the Danes came to India primarily for trade and commerce. Though the French initially showed some interest in Oriental trade and tried to challenge the Portuguese claims based on Papal bulls, they could not continue to insist on their rights on account of their involvement in problems at home. Moreover, they found better avenues for trade in the western hemisphere, namely Canada. Indo-French contacts began to be established initially through overseas trade in the second half of the seventeenth century with imports of precious metals into India by the French East India Company and through exports of spices and textiles from India to France. In due course, these Relations began to be diversified covering local politics, society, defence, diplomacy and culture. The present work highlights some of the aspects of these interactions. A couple of articles in this collection seek to explore the French relations with the native rulers like the Nawab of Bengal, Raja of Travancore, rulers of Mysore, the Marathas and even with some indigenous merchants. Changing strategies adopted by them to fight their common enemy, the English, are discussed in this section. Other essays dwell on the French influence on town planning, language, culture and various other aspects of mutual interaction and the process of decolonisation of the French settlements in the post-independence period. Finally, there is a detailed bibliography containing primary and secondary sources useful for scholars interested in studies on Indo-French relations.Printed Pages: 332. 101210

Non-Alinged Movement (Unipolar World and Beyond)
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8183150691; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Non Aligned originated in response to the complex challenges of Post-Second Word War world reality. Emerging from the nightmare of a global war, the world found itself on the threshold of an era of escalating international tensions and Cold War politics. Non-Alignment was an anxious appeal to the nations of the world for a retreat to peace and sanity, The Movement envisioned a radical restructuring of the principles and perceptions of international Relations and policies. The initiative came in the 1950s from three nations - India, Yugoslavia and Egypt respectively represented by the three statesmen -Nehru, Tito and Nasser. From its modest beginnings at the Belgrade Conference in 1961, with a participation of 25 nations, the Non-Aligned Movement has expanded to include 114 nations in the Kuala Lumpur Summit Conference in 2003.Printed Pages: 154. 104074

Human Rights and Armed Forces in Low Intensity Conflicts (in Hindi)
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502755; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The employment of the armed forces during low intensity conflicts has undergone a sea change, with a transformation in the modus operandi of insurgents/terrorists. It must be understood that while various Acts provide legal protection to the armed forces in the discharge of their duties, they do not give them a licence to violate human rights in any way. Largely, the basic instinct and reaction of a soldier in most situations is to protect human rights and uphold the dignity of the people. The concept of ‘Iron Fist and Velvet Glove’ promulgated in 2005 underscores the importance of human rights, which centres on ‘Truth, Justice and Transparency’. To ensure that the requisite deterrence prevails amongst the security forces on the subject of human rights, it is imperative that the fundamental stance of the Army entailing ‘Zero Tolerance’ is reiterated to one and all from time-to-time. This is undertaken along with the reiteration of basic Army values, which are Izzat, Imandari and Wafadari (Honour, Integrity and Loyalty). This also mandates commanders at all levels to expeditiously investigate alleged violations to mete out speedy justice. This book critically analyses the entire gamut of issues pertaining to human rights and employment of armed forces in low intensity conflicts from a practitioner’s experience.Printed Pages: 92. 104372

Pura Sri: Beauty and Wealth of Ancient India
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8176466492; Hardcover; New; New;
The Gariga-Gomati-Sai valley is the cradle of human civilization. The first divine instinct in Man (Homo Sapiens) is love for the mother. So the first evidence of Mother Goddess worship came from Newal in the Gariga Valley in the form of a stone-torso representing the lower parts of the Mother Goddess with emphasis on her pudenda, the source of all creation. Another figure of the Divine Mother was found from Belan Valley in the form of a bone statuette belonging to the Upper Palaeolithic period. A site in Madhya Pradesh, Baghor by name, has also yielded a similar evidence. The Upper Palaeolithic engraved core found at Chandravati; Rajasthan supports the symbolic representation of a Mother Goddess and fertility rituals. All these evidences go to suggest that Man had the ability to think over abstract things apart from those related to mundane life and culture. This light of learning and spiritual knowledge had emanated from the East. Here an attempt has been made to show that the art in the Gariga Valley had reached its full flower and fruition by the ingenuity and imagination of the people inhabiting its fertile plains. Certain specimens of the Maurya-Suriga Art of this region are unique and outstanding in the whole repertoire of Indian art. I hope the readers would like to go through the book and evince further interest in the study and understanding of the different aspects of Indian art, history and archaeology. Geography, Peoples and Geodynamics of India in Puranas and Epics: A Geologist's Interpretations
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8173054223; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
A geologist who read the texts of the Puranas and the Epics in conjunction with a mass of studies on geological history of the larger Indian continent and his own extensive field work in different parts of the country, this illustrated book endeavours to demonstrate that the narratives by scholarly sages embodied in these ancient Sanskrit works do not represent figments of poetic imagination, but provide - if shorn of metaphors, idiomatic phrases and allegories - the revealing facts and invaluable information on the geography and geomorphological layout, the ethnicity of the people who lived in different parts of the country, the flora and fauna that peopled the land of Bharatvarsha, and the drastic geodynamic events and climatic changes that overtook the land particularly in the last 12,000 years of the Holocene Epoch - called the Chaturyuga in the Puranas and Epics. The scholars of the Puranas and Epics time were quite knowledgeable about the origin, evolution and progression of life, including the coming of man, the interior of the earth, the dynamics of crustal upheavals, the occurrence, mining and metallurgy of minerals, the tapping of natural gas, reclaiming land from seas, and building bridges across even a sea. The relevant original Sanskrit text given in the Devanagari script is accompanied by the author's interpretation, rigorously tested on the anvil of incontrovertible evidence adduced from scientific studies on geological phenomena, human genetic markers, climate changes and backed up by tell-tale photographs. Tropical Forest Insect Pests promotes a better theoretical understanding of pest population dynamics, and causes of forest insect outbreaks in the tropics. Covering pests of both natural forests and plantations, it examines the diversity of tropical forest insects; their ecological functions; the concept of pests; and the incidence of pests in natural forests, plantations, and stored timber. The final section looks in detail at specific insect pests of the common plantation tree species across the tropics, with recommendations for their control. This is a comprehensive resource suitable for graduate students and researchers in forestry and tropical forest entomology, and for forest plantation managers in the tropics. • Provides detailed pest profiles of all major plantation pests thus identifying profitable research areas • Facilitates appreciation of the ecological role of insects and the rationale behind modern pest management • Presents a holistic picture of the ecological framework to aid understanding Contents Foreword; Preface; 1. The Dhammapada: A Translator's Guide
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8121512018; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This is the first translation of the Dhammapada that gives the original Pali with a word-for-word meaning and grammatical explanation. The basic purpose in so doing is to provide an opportunity to the readers to learn the etymology and meaning of each word. Such a presentation would also offer an opportunity to them to appreciate and enjoy something of the original language, which is very profound and concise. Below each verse, transliteration of Devanagari words is given in readable English to show the readers how the words are pronounced, so that, if they desire, they can appreciate the sound of the original language. Besides, this will further help in better understanding the verses. In making the translation that appears below each verse, the author's objective has been to stick as closely as possible to literal meanings. And while so doing, priority has been given to provide simple clarity. Printed Pages: 545. 033120

Invincibility, Challenges and Leadership
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8125041877; Hardcover; New; New;
Invincibility, Challenges and Leadership is a product of a thorough study and understanding of history, combined with the author’s extensive personal and professional experience in the army and government. K. V. Krishna Rao has used his wide-ranging research and experience to give the reader an over-view of the development and rise of a few civilisations and empires in the course of human history, and to examine the reasons for their downfall. He takes an in-depth look at the causes and consequences of major wars in the twentieth century; and the progress of the wars, explaining the course and impact of major battles fought. The author then closely looks at the life and role of major political and military rulers, to illustrate the development of these great leaders and examine the impact they had on events. These examples are used to identify the role of leadership in defining events, the characteristics and virtues of good leadership, and the consequences of the presence of these leaders in directing events.Printed Pages: 452. 101898

Writing and Editing News
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8125059040; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In the 1980s, a field action project, which later developed into a socio-legal service to address Violence against Women (VAW), was initiated and developed by an academic institute of social work in strategic partnership with the police in Mumbai and Maharashtra. This service, termed the ‘Special Cells’, worked in tandem with the police force, and in the past three decades, has been replicated in eight states across India. Women Survivors of Violence is a first-person account of the evolution of the Special Cells. In the mid-1980s, the author was the first social worker of the TISS-initiated ‘field action project’—working on the issue of violence against women from within the police system. The result was the introduction of Special Cells in the police system. This narrative traces the 29-year-old journey of this institution, and provides a deeply personal account of the effectiveness of a multi-agency coordinated response to VAW, in the form of a partnership between an academic institute, the police system, and the violated woman. This books adds to the limited literature available in India on the processes and lessons learnt from developing and implementing an intervention on VAW. It details the processes of understanding the violated woman and the police; setting up of systems to work with women from within the police system; and engaging with the state as the instrument that can secure the right of women to a safe and secure life. It critically reflects on the learnings of the Special Cells from the women, police, the state, law, and social work practices, in the context of the ongoing struggles to respond to violence against women. An informative and deeply important account, this book will be of interest to students and educators in departments of Social Work and Women’s Studies, government personnel, trainers in police academies, and administrators. Those interested in women’s issues will also find it fascinating.Printed Pages: 232. 102272

Writing and Editing News
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125064184; Softcover; New;
Methods of news gathering and writing, and presenting them have seen unprecedented changes in the past two decades. Newsrooms today deliver news across streams and formats and as it breaks. The frenetic pace at which news is generated makes it a challenge to produce error-free content. While journalists play various roles—as reporters, as editors on the desk, in news evaluation, in designing layouts and presenting news—the foundations of news writing, the basic practices of reporting, editing, and accountability and ethics apply to all. Writing and Editing News takes one back to the basics of news writing and editing.The book answers the questions: What is newsworthy information? How should a TV report be structured? Why is the humble sub vital for a report? How should the journalist guard against vested interests? From detailing the various styles of writing reports, to editing them for various formats, this book is a primer on basic journalistic practices. Drawing on the author’s long career, this book provides illustrations, commentaries and an appendix of carefully-chosen exercises in writing and editing news. It will be invaluable for the student of journalism and mass communication. Printed Pages: 232. 110975

Lesser Turned Bages of India
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380942599; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Lesser Turned Pages of India is all about India, but with a difference. It .does not deal with any particular aspect of India, rather touches many. What makes it different from hundreds of titles presently flooding bookshops is that it focuses on information lesser known or unknown about India. The soul of the book, however, is its rare photographs, illustrations, copies of hard-to-see old documents, letters, etc. This book covers subjects like the great land of India, India's cultural heritage, lost sciences and technologies of India, some less-known facts of Indian history and Indian mythology. As one turns the pages of the book, one would discover many amazing facts about India. Some such facts may have appeared elsewhere but not in one single book, under one cover for the convenience and benefit of readers. People of all ages and professions, students, research scholars as well as those aspiring for the Civil Services will find a wealth of information in this book.Printed Pages: 304. 104720

The Ellora Monoliths: Rashtrakuta Architecture in the Deccan
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1988; 8121201179; Hardcover; New; New;
This book seeks to lift into focus the monolithic legacy of the Rashtrakutas at Ellora, from out of the reason that these monoliths perhaps are best suited to understand and reconstruct the artistic, architectural, traditional, religious and cult interactions and growth-spectra that had taken place in the period from the 8th to the 10th century A.D., very much more eloquently than the study of the cave temple types. Without the stabilizing role of these monoliths, in the over view of the status of temple art, in that period which the Rashtrakutas adorned by their vigorous patronage, eclecticism and multi-pronged political thrusts all over India in their heyday, the cave-art syndrome would tend to cloy even under the best circumstances, as something repetitive, potteries and commandeered which surely it was not. The book deals with the five monoliths at Ellora, in their own historical architectural, iconographic-religious perspectives, and elucidates how they were greatly diversified and pregnant with rich potential for the reconstruction of the are situation; and it compares them also with their compeer monoliths elsewhere in South India, in the same ilk, as in the Pallava and Pandya zones of the past. The chief aim of the book is to give a satisfactory formal picture of these monoliths and to vest them with the credit of being land-marks in the arche-types they sought to represent. Profusely illustrated and with a helpful set of charts and glossary, it is designed to cover a felt need in art studies at Ellora.Printed Pages: 320. 105703

Secularism in Indian Art
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170172454; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is directed towards inquiring into the definition of the scope of secularism in a holistic way, in so far as it could apply to ancient Indian creative art, often labelled as religious art. It is, however, seen that this art often shows in its composition, partly or wholly, a deliberate unrelatedness to its immediate locus, and conveys the mind of the artist, his absorption of the aesthetic and literary, traditional, mystic and the rasa-charged pulsating life-stream legacy, and display of macro-cosmic temper, supra-regional commonality and norm-building penchant, in his eventual creations. Religion can produce profound thought, but not art which, through the medium of religion, shows insight and the impacts of secular experience. Examining by a sampling the entire range of art, sectorally and chronologically, to detect the secular manifestations embedded in the art presentations, the author finds that there is an integrated secularism in the art of India’s past, invoked by the artists who had been groomed in its culture and who had developed a macro-perception, by the totality of the impacts of the Dharmasastras, Arthasastras, Kamasastras, and Natyasastras, along with the hieratic works and the fertility cults and mystic deity-devotee links, analogous to mundane romantic attachment, and the ancient artist who owned all this as a private legacy, had evolved his own techniques for formal creations of them in art. Illustrated with sixty-four plates and line drawings, besides Notes on Plates and Appendices, the eight chapters of the book dissect the processes behind art creations, to reveal humanism and secularism.
