Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380828794; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Faith & Frenzy is a collection of stories that bring to the reader the intimate details of forgotten kashmiris of all hues, caught in he quagmire of terror and murky politics, and weighed down by the historical burden of long confrontation between India and Pakistan. Their stories have remained untold, submerged as they remain under layers of shady rhetoric and politics of deceit. These are stories of reconciliation and reaffirmation of religious diversity and of how thousand of kashmiris , mostly pandits, were forced in to exodus from the valley to the plains of India- their lives before and after the exodus and their identity crisis.Printed Pages: 260. 104631

You have the story of a man unable to erase the spit that his fatherinlaw flings into his face; a young woman caught between the humiliation of rejection and the relentless persuasion to convert; a doctor kidnapped to treat a terrorist in his hideout; a running cricket commentary that brings to life a patient in coma; a pir with magical powers to congeal the blood in the womb of maidens; a dwarfish boy who will stop at nothing to grow tall; an old man who develops intractable hiccups after giving chase to a thief; a bear hug that robs a doctor of his sleep… Each story brings alive the human touch as the deft narrative unfolds through scenes and situations, through narratives and dialogues, through drama and suspense, through agony and ecstasy, holding the reader spellbound till the very end. 107202

Narasimha Purana (Text with English Translation)
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2003; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Puranic age or era in ancient India next to Vedas has its most significance. During mediaeval period, Puranic rites assumed position even higher than the rituals recommended in Vedas among the people. The rites performed through the procedure mentioned in Puranas got wide acceptance among public in the form of more benevolence and spirituality as it was the essence of Puranas. This Purana occupies an important place among the above listed upa-Puranas. Like other Puranas, Narasimha Purana is also considered to be complied by Vyasa. On the contrary, every Purana dwells at length on one or more particular subjects and in some, these five primary topics occupy a very subordinate position. Narasimha Purana also depicts these five topics, viz., (1) primary creation or cosmogony, (2) secondary creation, (3) genealogy of gods and patriarchs, (4) reigns of the Manus, (5) History of the solar and lunar dynasties. It contains various episodes of the incarnation of Lord Visnu, especially Rama's incarnation. There are sixty five chapters, which describe all topics related with Purana. It describes the story of Rishi Markandeya's victory over death including 'Yamagita'. The form of devotion, definition of a true devotee and the character of devotees like Dhruva has been described in this Purana. Despite of it being small, it is pregnant with meaning.Printed Pages: 358. 100594

Dual Identity: Indian Diaspora and Other Essays
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8125052720; Hardcover; New; New;
‘Diaspora’ (from the Greek, meaning ‘scattering’, ‘dispersion’) is the mass migration of people with common roots to more than one location. The word was first used for Jews exiled from Israel in ancient times. The Indian diaspora, of over twenty million, is spread across many regions and continents. This collection of essays examines the concept of diaspora, considering its cultural, economic, geographical, political and social dimensions, and focuses on the Indian diaspora. It also examines issues of displacement and resettlement, and of the creation of a distinctly socio-religious Indian community. This volume reflects on conceptual and methodological questions, as well as the historical contours of the issue. Readers will find analyses of the nature of migration, ethnic divides and tensions, and linkages with the homeland. Case studies of the Indian diaspora in Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Fiji, as well as the diaspora of Dalits, provide insights regarding multiculturalism. Discussions on how ‘place’ is being substituted by ‘space’ and how globalisation gives a new direction to migration are among the distinctive features. The essays also traverse the fields of sociology, social anthropology and cultural mediations. An invaluable resource for students of modern Indian history, politics and sociology, this book should appeal to all those interested in understanding the ramifications of the Indian diaspora. This collection will be of help to researchers enquiring into multicultural ties, and policy makers concerned with international relations.Printed Pages: 340. 101762

The Author very convincingly brings home the impact of the invasion of the Muslim on the Ancient Hindu order which was almost completely destroyed. The book draws a clear Picture of how the early Muslim invaders succeeded in levying foundations which proved strong enough for the later Mughals in raising their glorious edifice. Thereby, the author proves that how Akbar as well as his successors followed the Pattern their Turkish and Afghan predecessors had shaped for them.Printed Pages: 352. 105957

Orissa Under the East India Company
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1971; 812150404X; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Orissa Under the East India Company is a systematic account of the main aspects of the British administration in Orissa from the time of its conquest till the end of the East India Company's rule, which forms for various reasons, a very important period in the history of the British Empire in India. No adequate attention has been paid so far to this aspect of the history of Orissa. Political history everywhere having being paid more than the necessary attention, administrative and economic aspects are less known subjects in history. In case of Orissa, this work has tried to redress the balance in a vital chapter of her history. For an integrated account of the British Indian history, the experiments or innovations effected under local conditions cannot be neglected. Since Orissa emerged as one of the eleven units of British India in this century, her 19th century history which has remained mostly unknown deserves thorough enquiry. Such local surveys of different parts of India in the 19th century would help to indicate the process of change which was coming over India during British period. The East India Company ruled Orissa for 55 years. The Company's Administration, instead of bringing any change for progress in Orissa, left for the future a legacy of stagnation and economic deterioration. The work shows the process of that decline and throws light on those features which caused so much harm to the territory and its people. Original works and manuscripts records pertaining to the period and relevant Parliamentary Papers have been consulted to construct this work. Especially the unpublished Government records exhaustively utilized to bring out authentic historical account of the East India Company's Administration in Orissa. Rural Women Workers in Asia
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 817533309X; Hardcover; New; New;
Asian economics present a mixed picture of countries with impressive growth and those that are burdened by the economic ills of low incomes and food deficits. Even with such differences in economic performance, agriculture continues to be the dominant sector in the region and of strategic importance to pverty alleviation and sustainable food security. The drudgery of rural women's work raises gender equality considerations concerning rural women and their efforts to improve household food security. Time is the key resource in women's strategies to access food and livelihood commodities, yet most rural women in Asia have insufficient time. A heavy work burden leaves women little time to participate in capacity improvement interventions even if opportunities are available. The daily life of rural women in the region is characterized by the search for water, fuel and inputs for either agriculture or household production in their common pursuit of household livelihood secuirty, including food security. In the region, women's roles and constraints in contributing to household food security must be viewed in the context of the ecological resource base, food trade, liberation of trade and transformation to open market economics, employment opportunities, access to technology and technical knowledge, and input supply. Women and Their Political Exploitations: Abused and Misused
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8175333138; Hardcover; New; New;
The plague is the systematic and violent exploitation of women. This exploitation takes many forms, depriving women of their most basic freedom, robbing them of their health, Keeping them away from the education they need and deserve, and condemning them to lives without economic opportunity. It is particularly cogent to focus on women's political participant because the realm of politics has been marked by both significant under-representation of women-politicians and the exclusion of gender issues. Furthermore, negative consequences of globalization (e.g. Economic Exploitation) aggravate women's lives in poorer countries, especially when strong political commitment and will to implement gender equality are absent. It is possible, however, to make globalization processes support social justice through the democratization of local, national and international spaces and such democratization is inherently political and therefore recent developments with respect to women's political participation.
