Hymns of Guru Naka (Illustrated)
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8125011617; Reissue; Hardcover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
In this translation of some of Guru Nanak’s finest devotional poems, the fifteenth century founder of the Sikh religion points the way to self-realisation by love, devotion, and service to man and God. The hymns have as direct and strong a message today as they did when they were first composed. The elements of faith and passion are sensitively brought out in Arpita Singh’s paintings which, in colour and inspired drawing, heighten the aesthetic and spiritual dimensions of Guru Nanak’s divine verse. Ranjit Singh: Maharaja of the Punjab
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143065432; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
The classic biography of one of India’s greatest rulers Ranjit Singh was in every way as remarkable a man as his contemporaries, Napoleon and Mohammed Ali. From the status of petty chieftain he rose to become the most powerful Indian ruler of his time. His empire extended from Tibet to the deserts of Sindh and from the Khyber Pass to the Sutlej. His army was one of the most powerful of the time in Asia and was the first Indian force in a thousand years to stem the tides of invasion from the north-west frontiers of Hindustan. This is the first detailed biography of the first and only Sikh ruler of the Punjab by a Sikh writer who has devoted many years of his life to research on Sikh history. In this classic work Khushwant Singh presents Ranjit Singh as he really was. Based on Persian, Punjabi and English sources and drawing upon the diaries and accounts of European travellers like Moorcroft, Sir Alexander Burne, Masson, Fane and Emily Eden, this is a memorable account of the pageantry and brilliance of the Sikh Kingdom at the height of its power, and a lively portrait of one of the most colourful characters in Indian history. 'Khushwant Singh has retained the flavour and taste of those heady times when the Sikh cavalry galloped to victory on every battlefield they happened to traverse. With this classic work, he has brought alive yet another colourful chapter in Indian history.' —The Indian Express ‘A memorable account of the pageantry and brilliance of the Sikh kingdom at the height of its power'—Financial Express. Burial at Sea
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143032615; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this, his first novella in five years, one of India’s most widely read authors returns to territories he knows best: twentieth-century Indian history, bogus religion, and sexuality. After Nehru, Victor Jai Bhagwan is Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite Indian—a brilliant young man with the temperament of a leader and fiercely committed to his country. Though Victor adores and respects Gandhi, he disagrees with the Mahatma’s vision for the future of India. He returns from university in England determined to bring the benefits of modern industry to the subcontinent and, within a few years of India’s independence, becomes the country’s biggest tycoon. But this is not the only ideal of Gandhi’s that he defies: facing a midlife crisis, he falls passionately in love with a tantric god-woman (who keeps a tiger as her pet and has a dubious past). She introduces him to the pleasures of unbridled sexuality, but also becomes the reason for his downfall. Comic, tender and erotic by turns, Burial at Sea is vintage Khushwant Singh. Truth, Love and a Little Malice: An Autobiography
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2002; 0143029576; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Born in 1915 in pre-Partition Punjab, Khushwant Singh, perhaps India’s most widely read and controversial writer, has been witness to most of the major events in modern Indian history—from Independence and Partition to the Emergency and Operation Blue Star—and has known many of the figures who have shaped it. With clarity and candour, he writes of leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, the terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the talented and scandalous painter Amrita Shergil, and everyday people who became butchers during Partition. Writing of his own life, too, Khushwant Singh remains unflinchingly forthright. He records his professional triumphs and failures as a lawyer, journalist, writer and member of Parliament; the comforts and disappointments in his marriage of over sixty years; his first, awkward sexual encounter; his phobia of ghosts and his fascination with death; the friends who betrayed him, and also those whom he failed. Delhi: A Novel
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 0140126198; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Thus begins Khushwant Singh’s vast, erotic, irrelevant magnum opus on the city of Delhi. The principal narrator of the saga, which extends over six hundred years, is a bawdy, ageing reprobate who loves Delhi as much as he does the hijda whore Bhagmati—half man, half woman with sexual inventiveness and energy of both the sexes. Travelling through time, space and history to ‘discover’ his beloved city, the narrator meets a myriad of people—poets and princes, saints and sultans, temptresses and traitors, emperors and eunuchs—who have shaped and endowed Delhi with its very special mystique… And as we accompany the narrator on his epic journey we find the city of emperors transformed and immortalized in our minds for ever. Obituaries: Death at My Doorstep
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 817436708X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
For Khushwant Singh who wrote his own obituary in his twenties, death is not sacred but he reflects on it increasingly these days. In Death At My Doorstep, a collection of obituaries written over the years, he presents the dead in death, as in life—good, bad or ugly. Be it on the twilight hours of Bhutto, the gory end of Sanjay Gandhi, the sycophantic M.O. Mathai, the Marxist millionaire Rajni Patel, the overbearing Lord Mountbatten, or on his pet Alsatian Simba, each obituary bears out his irreverence or affection. Cocking a snook at death, he has also penned his own epitaph. Yet outliving those whom he admired has moved him to tears, and many of his obituaries have left the reader with a heavy heart. While Death At My Doorstep is Khushwant Singh’s demystification of death, it also ferries his message to Badey Mian, in the words of Allama Iqbal: Baagh-e-bahisht say mujhay hukm-e-safar diya thha kyon? Kaar-e-Jahaan daraaz hai, ab meyra intazaar kar. (Why did you order me out of the garden of paradise? I have a lot of work that remains unfulfilled; now you better wait for me.) Sahibs Who Loved India
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2010; 0143415808; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
A rare collection of essays that invites the reader to revisit a vanished era of sahibs and memsahibs. From Lord Mountbatten to Peggy Holroyde to Maurice and Taya Zinkin, Britishers who lived and worked in India reminisce about topics and points of interest as varied as the Indian Civil Service and the Roshanara Club, shikar and hazri, the Amateur Cine Society of India and the Doon School, Rudyard Kipling and Mahatma Gandhi. Selected from a series of articles commissioned by Khushwant Singh when he was the editor of the Illustrated Weekly of India these delightfully individualistic and refreshingly candid writings reveal a fascinating array of British attitudes, experiences, observations, fond memories, the occasional short-lived grouses and, above all, a deep and abiding affection and respect for India. The Dilemma of Popular Sovereignty in the Middle East: Power from or to the People?
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649112; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The ongoing political turmoil in the Middle East as a whole would seem to be essentially a contest between the minimalist and maximalist positions on popular sovereignty: should power merely come from, and be exercised in the name of, the people? Or, should those in power be fully accountable to the people? The dilemma warrants a closer look. The present volume comes out of an international conference held in Calcutta, India organised by the Institute of Foreign Policy Studies and the Centre for Pakistan and West Asian Studies, University of Calcutta in March 2013. This volume aims not at a definitive analysis of why what happened did happen; it aims instead at getting a sense of what was actually happening, and what is at issue.Printed Pages: 200. 104264

From his humble beginnings as a RSS pracharak to his rise in the Hindutva ranks, and from being Bharatiya Janata Partys master planner to one of the its most popular and controversial state chief ministers, Modis mantra of change and development is gradually finding many takers. Though he evokes vastly different reactions among the citizens for his alleged role during the Godhra aftermath, what is absolutely clear is that he indeed is racing towards the centre stage, making the 2014 General Elections look more like a Presidential system where, you either vote for him or against him. And that, as they say, is the Modi effect. Kingshuk Nag paints the most vivid portrait of the extraordinary politician who is poised to take on a new role in the coming years. International Business and Culture
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 817992758X; Softcover; New;
International Business And Culture is a book devoted to the effects of culture on international business operations. Many costly errors have been made by international businesses that have not realized the extent to which the needs and behaviors of consumers and employees vary among regions and nations. Change has created many conflicts between the established ways and the introduction of new ideas and different behaviors. As firms further their internationalization efforts more and more employees will find that they are being exposed to greater cultural diversity. This is increasingly the case due to efforts to expand hiring of indigenous persons to staff “foreign” locations. Often new managers from foreign subsidiaries are provided training in the domestic offices exposing not only them, but also those around them, to different ways of thinking. This internationalization of the workplace has placed increased pressures on human resource departments, managers and staff. As such, companies will find it increasingly difficult to respond to differing languages, values and perceptions in a manner that maximizes diverse personal qualities and achieves company goals. As Internet use, international travel and communication speed all increase it is certainly reasonable to assume that the velocity at which cultures collide will increase as well. The seven articles included in this book provide valuable insights into dealing with these issues.Printed Pages: 172. 105602

Journal of Gender and Justice, Volume 1
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 2250-2165; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
India has been labelled as a land of gender inequality and a challenging place for a woman to live. For centuries, social reformers were fighting for women rights and thus taking the country out of this social stigma and injustice, and they invested a lot on educating and empowering women. But they have met with only partial success. The numerous cases of female infanticides, sex-selective abortions and atrocities on women endorse this fact. We have yet to undergo a sea change in our attitude towards the dignity, education, employment and empowerment of women. The society has to appreciate their strength and treat them as quintessentials in nation-building. There is no society in the world in which women do not experience some gender inequality, be it in political, economic, social, or legal fronts. But in many countries, the gender inequality is really acute. Therefore these important issues -- the invisibility, dstortion and marginalization of gender as a category of analysis in mainstream disciplines and their canonozation -- need serious deliberations. The objectives of Journal of Gender and Justice are both academic and social. It expects to change the present attitude and values in society regarding women's roles and rights to one of equal participation in all social, economic and political processes. It is designed to help in bringing a culture shift in attitudes and values in society regarding women's roles and rights. This "annual" journal from the stable of Banares Hindu University's Centre for Women's Studies and Development, Varanasi, will also target at fulfilling a special responsibility to teachers, who are aware of the need of non-sexiest education, who would pick up the challenge to promote value of equality, including the gender equality.Printed Pages: 183. 100505

The Inheritance of Loss: A Novel
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0670058785; First Edition; Soft Cover; New; New; 16.5 x 25 Cm
Kiran Desai's first novel, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard, was published to unanimous acclaim in over twenty-two countries. Now Desai takes us to the northeastern Himalayas where a rising insurgency challenges the old way of life. In a crumbling, isolated house at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga lives an embittered old judge who wants to retire in peace when his orphaned granddaughter Sai arrives on his doorstep. The judge's chatty cook watches over her, but his thoughts are mostly with his son, Biju, hopscotching from one New York restaurant job to another, trying to stay a step ahead of the INS, forced to consider his country's place in the world. When a Nepalese insurgency in the mountains threatens Sai's new-sprung romance with her handsome Nepali tutor and causes their lives to descend into chaos, they, too, are forced to confront their colliding interests. The nation fights itself. The cook witnesses the hierarchy being overturned and discarded. The judge must revisit his past, his own role in this grasping world of conflicting desires—every moment holding out the possibility for hope or betrayal. A novel of depth and emotion, desai’s second, long-awaited novel fulfils the grand promise established by her first. Printed Pages: 336. 023039

Jinnah Often Came to Our House
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789385152931; Softcover; New;
India, 1904. The young and dashing Sultan Kowaishi has just returned from London to Bombay after passing his barrister exam. Among the first persons he meets is Mohammed Ali Jinnah, already an advocate of note, and is quickly drawn to him. It is also the time when Jinnah decides to join the Indian National Congress, soon to become its brightest star. The stir against the British rule holds no interest for Sultan but it attracts his wife Rehana, and, inexorably, weaves its way into their lives. In this brilliant saga of love and betrayal, pain and redemption, set amidst the long struggle for freedom and its terrible twin, the call for Pakistan, we confront questions that are as relevant today as they were a hundred years ago. Questions of identity, of purpose, of the shackles of a thousand memories. 109742

Beyond Desire: Sexuality in Modern Tamil Literature
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 8121509769; Hardcover; New; New;
Moving away from a dominant cultural equation of love, desire, and intimacy with marriage, Beyond Desire offers a radical view that reinstates the body as an enduring symbol of desire. Drawing on the works of seven twentieth-century male Tamil writers beginning with K.P. Rajagopalan, this book explores a spectrum of male–female intimacies wherein desire, liberated from the sexual act, acquires its own creative agency. Through a reading of selected works of writers like T. Janakiraman, Karichan Kunju, Mauni, M.V. Venkatram, Dandapani Jeyakantan, and Tanjai Prakash, this book focuses on the category of the sensual that intertwines the sexual and other modes of relating to the world through spirituality, social reform, and artistic labour. As most of these narratives are articulated through male characters, many of whom are torn between expressing their desire and preserving their religious integrity, the overarching mission remains rooted in discerning the shifts in male perception. The first book in English on modern Tamil literature, it offers alternative readings of sexualities that resist social and sexual definitions, and is a significant contribution to literary scholarship in Tamil. Village and Village Life in Ancient India: A Study of Village and Village Life in Northern India from 6th Century BC to 1st Century BC
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8173052611; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
In this work, an attempt has been made to present in a concise form the various and variegated facets of village and village life in Northern India from c. sixth century BC, a great landmark in Indian history in several fields, to c. first century AD, by linking together pieces of evidence culled from literary and archaeological sources. The first chapter deals with time frame, area of study and sources and their relative merit for historical reconstruction. The next two chapters discuss the form and character of villages and their position vis-a-vis towns and cities. The fourth chapter discusses socio-economic stratification, and the fifth, sixth and seventh chapters, aspects of social, economic and religious life, respectively. Administration and taxation forms the subject of the eighth chapter. Then follow two appendices dealing with ownership of land, and grant of agricultural land and villages, respectively, a bibliography and an index. Forty-five line-drawings and twelve photographs have been added which throw light on various aspects of the life of the village folk. Similarities and diversities between villages and towns have been highlighted, and an attempt has been made to distinguish between ideal and real, common and rare, and change and continuity. Asoka: The King and the Man
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8173054339; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
The present volume comprising 11 Chapters deals variously with political and economic background and sources; classification and features of edicts; early life and family; conquests and extent of empire; administration; faith in Buddhism; dhamma; religious harmony; society and religions; monuments; and estimate of Asoka. Of five Appendices, the last one deals with the latest discovered Asokan inscription, brought to light by the author. Some points may be highlighted. If Taxila Aramaic inscription was engraved during Asoka's viceroyalty, then Priyadarsi, occurring in it, was not his coronation name. The first five lines of the Panguraria inscription do not refer to Asoka as viceroy on pleasure tour. Identifications and status of Asoka's queens suggested by scholars are rejected, and alternate suggestions offered. The views that Asoka allowed the slaughter of two peacocks and one deer because he was fond of their meat, or because their meat was offered to family deity, have been countered. It is argued with evidence that Chandragupta, and not Bindusara, married a Greek princess. Asoka ruthlessly attacked Kalinga, as in the war of succession, its king had sided with his rival. Asoka has been criticized for granting merely three days for making appeal against death sentence, its review, judgment on the review and conveying the same to the petitioner. The circumstances of the presence of the Separate Rock Edicts at Sannati have been critically examined. Literary and epigraphic evidences show that elephant in Asokan art symbolises Buddha, and so the view that the Dhauli elephant represents Asoka is not correct. Asoka's statement that as a lay Buddhist, after association with samgha, by exerting much he made people extremely pious, clearly shows that the dhamma he propagated was Buddhism, and leaves no scope for debate about it. Badal Sircar: Search for a Language of Theatre
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789383098965; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Badal Sircar was one of the most significant modern playwrights of post Independence India. Starting in the fifties, with his deep understanding of the concerns and anxieties of the Indian middle class coupled with his delightful sense of humour and wit, he made an immediate connect with the people and brought a new energy and excitement to the theatre arena with his large body of plays. He stands out for his innovativeness and the sheer range of his plays in terms of subjects, forms and styles. He is probably the most translated and staged Indian playwright of the last century.Badal Sircar with his unique and characteristic restlessness, passion and social commitment was constantly experimenting not only with dramatic form and language but also with performance spaces, acting styles and performer-spectator relationships. Through experiments and exposure to different methodologies he explored and developed his own theory and practice of theatre called the Third Theatre-a theatre of synthesis between the urban and the traditional theatre. Donning many hats - of playwright, theoretician, actor, director and activist - he was a composite theatre personality, and liked to be known as such. Single-handedly, he created a brand of theatre all over the country and overseas which empowered small amateur theatre groups to practise theatre without much infrastructure and training and with a strong sense of purpose.This book, through memoirs, interviews, essays, dialogues, reviews and notes by directors, traces the life and theatre of this iconic but lonely figure, from different viewpoints, piecing together his relentless creative journey of more than six decades. Foreign Policy of Bangladesh
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8174791299; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Foreign policy is an instrument to promote and protect a country's national interest in the arena of international order. Foreign policy provides a general framework of a country's relations with various other states and non-state actors. The strength or weaknesses of a country are reflected in its foreign policy formulations and operationalisation. Therefore, foreign policy of a country is also a reflection of its status and power. In this regard foreign policy is closely related to domestic policy. In the context of the developing countries foreign policy implementation is a complex phenomenon as these countries are faced with numerous political and economic strains, pulls and pressures. In this age of global interdependence, where no nation can live in isolation, every state has to maintain some sort of relations with other states. This is usually done by pursuing the foreign policy. In keeping with this basic fact of state practice, Bangladesh also pursues a distinct course in its relations with the external environment. However, the operationalisation of foreign policy of a country is not an independent variable. It is shaped and conditioned by a set of variable which includes both stable and dynamic forces. In the present book an attempt has been made to find out the determinants of Bangladesh foreign policy, its decision making structure and the nature of its continuity and change. These are important for understanding the bases on which Bangladesh formulates its foreign policy. It contains eight chapters and appendices dealing with the issues of different determinants of foreign policy of Bangladesh including political, economic and regional factors. The book also highlights the relations of Bangladesh with USA, China, India, Pakistan and other neighbouring countries. Special features of the book include the backdrop of foreign policy along with emerging scenario in external relations of Bangladesh. This book would be of interest to decision makers, politicians, bureaucrats, researchers, consultants, researchers and students, as it deals with a wide array of foreign policy issues.Printed Pages: 320. 104222

Asian Diplomacy: The Foreign Ministries of China, India, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195694228; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This study examines the geopolitical landscape and diplomatic culture of Asia’s five ascending powers—China, India, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand. It scrutinizes the structure and processes of their foreign ministries and the instruments through which foreign policy is implemented. It compares the practices in the leading foreign ministries of the world and how these nations are responding to the demands of globalized democracy in contemporary times. Rana explores related issues like internationalization, subject plurality, technology, public diplomacy, and accountability, and investigates whether these have undermined the relevance of the foreign ministry or have led to a decline of the state’s role in world affairs. Using information and data collected from more than 160 interviews in these countries, the author sheds important light on diplomacy in Asia, a region that merits close attention. He also examines the effectiveness of foreign ministries and their overseas networks; the recruitment and management of diplomatic services; recent evolution in diplomacy; training reforms; performance management; decision-making; crisis management; and style of negotiation. The author also discusses whether the methods of diplomacy are sufficiently adapted and flexible for fully exploiting opportunities available and whether the foreign ministries carry conviction with the home publics and deliver value to them. 020919
