Edwards Sketches in Scinde
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8173052697; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 51 x 28 Cm
The portrait of this distinguished officer was taken on the late expedition across the desert against Bejar Khan and the Hill Chieftains,--the country is contiguous to Scinde, but belongs to the Khan of Kelat, and is called "Cutch Gundava," where the cold is at certain periods extremely intense, hence the upper Spencer or garment of sheep skin, which forms so prominent a part of the equipment. This was very generally used by our troops in the Afghan country, being warm, light, and readily procurable. The cap resembles the helmet now worn by the Prussian infantry, and like the new infantry cap lately introduced into our army, it has a projection behind to protect the poll of the neck. This is an admirable likeness and the signature attests the approbation of Sir C.J. Napier. The Governor of Scinde and Beloochistan has occupied a large share of the public attention as one of the glorious Chiefs of our Indian armies. In February, 1843, he fought the battle of Meeanee against the Ameers of upper and lower Scinde, on which occasion the whole of the enemy's artillery, ammunition standards and camp with considerable stores and some treasure were taken. The loss on the part of the enemy was supposed to amount to five thousand, while the British force lost two hundred and fifty-six, killed and wounded. In March he fought the battle of Duppa, against a force of twenty thousand men of all arms, with a result not less triumphant. Any detail of the services of this brave and excellent soldier does not come within the purpose of a notice like this; his most signal triumphs are fresh in the minds of all, and enough is known of him to show that the name of Napier and Victory are united in a knot of laurel which the sword of no enemy shall sever. From Freud to Jung: A Comparative Study of the Psychology of the Unconscious
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2001; 1570626766; Softcover; New;
This comparative study of the basic concepts of Freud and Jung is designed to give a comprehensive understanding of Jung's work. The author traces the development of Jung from his initial fascination with Freud's ideas to his gradual liberation from these powerful concepts and the final breakthrough into his own unique theories of man and the cosmos. Jung's fundamental view—that the psyche is a totality of conscious and unconscious elements that seeks to realize itself—stands in sharp contrast to Freud's early view of the psyche as primarily the effect of prior causes. Hence Freud tends to stress the pathological, whereas Jung looks to the creative and self-transcending aspects of human nature. The final section of the book describes the development of Jung's ideas after the death of Freud, particularly his concept of the archetypes. Printed Pages: 368. 111028

Together Under One Roof: Making a Home of the Buddha's Household
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2009; 0861715543; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In Together Under One Roof, Lin Jensen turns his keen eye and powerful prose explicitly to the teachings of the Buddha, to traditional Zen stories, and to the practices of meditation and compassion - as well as the intricacies of everyday language and the natural world, truth and beauty, family, and the myriad ways our simplest actions affect our whole lives. His previous two works, memoirs of growing up and growing old and of the hard-won but gentle wisdom gained in his daily public meditations for peace, were both critical successes earning a special place in readers' hearts. This book takes up symphonic variations on one main theme: we are all "in it" together, we are all living under one roof - and there's always a glowing hearth right here in this, the Buddha's household. When Marriages Go Astray: Choices Made, Choices Challenged
Orient BlackSwan/RCS Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8192304620; Hardcover; New; New;
When Marriages Go Astray: Choices Made, Choices Challenged is an account of inter-caste and inter-religious marriages and presents detailed case studies from Bishnupur, a town in West Bengal. In this study Lina Fruzzetti looks into a rarely studied aspect of female agency in India: how can we understand society’s concern with marriages deemed to have gone astray? How do women cope with their families’ rejection of their choices? This work addresses women’s dilemma in selecting one’s marriage partner in a society still bound by the tradition of arranging marriages for their children. Fruzzetti analyzes the discourse of how these young women set about negotiating new boundaries by denying their imposed ideal as custodians and preservers of tradition. Instead of acquiescing to rules and cultural obligations, they decide to navigate the confines of culture and their decision often sets them against kinship, family, or even one’s faith, notably in cases requiring conversion to a new religion. These women realize that in asserting their ‘freedom to choose’ they face conflict with the expectations of their upbringing and pose challenges of acceptability to their families, society, caste, and occasionally religious communities.Printed Pages: 200. 101798

Lives Lived, Lives Imagined: Biography in the Buddhist Traditions
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2010; 0861715780; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
From the Buddha in ancient India to a nun in modern-day Los Angeles, Lives Lived, Lives Imagined crosses time, traditions, and cultures to present fascinating lives and depictions of lives of those on the Buddhist path. Buddhist biographies come to life in many forms: they come from known poets and anonymous compilers; they are told by bards and even enacted by performers; they may also be autobiographies, either public or secret. Equally diverse have been the purposes they have served-as models for emulation, as origin stories for a particular community or lineage, or as narrative explications of doctrine. This book, a collection of papers presented at a conference at the University of Oxford, presents a multifaceted, multitradition portrait of Buddhist biographies. Part 1 deals with biographies of the Buddha, investigating Chinese and Pali sources and the Sanskrit dramatizations of Asvaghosa. Part 2 contains modern Buddhist life stories, including a rare autobiography from Burma. Part 3 explores the Tibetan tradition, including such well-known figures as Milarepa, Shakya Chogden, and Karmapa Mikyö Dorje. Together, these biographies and studies reveal the rich diversity of Buddhism's myriad incarnations over its long history and the dynamic scope of its thought and practice. Religion and Rajput Women: The Ethic of Protection in Contemporary Narratives
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1992; 8121506131; First Indian Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
In the present work, the authoress explores the relationship between caste and gender in the narratives of Rajput women. For a year and a half the authoress lived in Rajasthan, India, and did fieldwork among the Rajputs (literally "sons of princes"), whose traditional caste duty was to serve as soldiers and protect their realms. Authoress examines the inherent contradiction between the caste-affiliated duty to protect a husband by exploring three types of women's narratives: those related to kuldevis (family goddesses), satimatas (women who have immolated themselves on their husband's funeral pyre), and heroines. In this manner, she gives the reader an in-depth view of the lives of Rajput women while exploring the commonly told stories that provide paradigms for moral action. Donhead Publishing Ltd; Dorset, UK; 1997; 1873394187; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 20.5 x 22.5 Cm Charles Glen
Access for disabled people in historic settings is more than just a temporary ramp over the front steps for a wheelchair user. It is a commitment to create integrated use and enjoyment of historic monuments for everyone, including people with mobility or sensory impairments, older people, parents with small children, or those temporarily disabled as a result of illness or injury. This book examines flexible and pragmatic solutions to improve circulation in buildings by overcoming level changes, addition of handrails and other facilities which achieve the basic goal of dignified access, and which protect a building’s special architectural character. It features practical guidelines and illustrated case study material, with examples of how to improve access in different types of historic buildings including Georgian, and neo-classical buildings, historic monuments, country houses, gardens and landscapes. Contents: Foreword by Patrick Nuttgens v A PATTERN OF CHANGE What is disabled access?; Equal treatment vs. special treatment; Why make any improvement at all?; Conservation guidance v CRITERIA FOR DEVELOPING AN ACCESS STRATEGY The Disability Discrimination Act; Identification and assessment of physical barriers v CIRCULATION STRATEGIES Choosing the right entrance; front entrance solutions; Creating a new public entrance; A change of use; Extensions; Complementary entrances; Portable ramps v DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Architectural value; Authenticity; Reversibility; New ramps and railings; Pavement ramps; Handrails v VERTICAL CIRCULATION Access considerations; Conservation constraints; Passenger lifts v CULTURAL MONUMENTS Country houses, ruins and landscapes; Circulation strategies; Unroofed monuments and historic landscapes v Appendix; Practical Guidance v Notes v Bibliography v Index. Language, Emotion, and Politics in South India: The Making of a Mother Tongue
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178242931; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
What makes someone willing to die, not for a nation, but for a language? In the 1950s and 1960s a wave of suicides in the name of language swept through South India. This book asks why such emotional attachments to language appeared. It answers by tracing shifts in local perceptions and experiences of language in general, and Telugu in particular, during the preceding century. Winner of the Edward Cameron Dimock, Jr., Prize in the Indian Humanities, American Institute of Indian Studies Mitchell shows the emergence in India of language as the foundation for the reorganization of a wide range of forms of knowledge and practice. These included literary production, the writing of history, geographic imagination, grammatical and lexical categorizations, ideas about translation, and pedagogy. Newly organized around languages, these practices then enabled assertions of community and identity. Ultimately, by the early decades of the twentieth century, new linguistic identities had begun to appear ancient and natural rather than recent and invented. Indeed, though Andhra was created as independent India’s first linguistically defined state in 1952, diverse writings projected Indian linguistic identities backwards into a long past. This is a fascinating study of linguistic identity, state formation, and political mobilization. It greatly enriches existing understandings of Indian history and politics. Buton's History of Buddhism in India and Its Spread to Tibet. A Treasury of Priceless Scripture
Snow Lion Publications; Ithaca, New York, USA; 1559394137; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
This 14th century lively history introduces basic Buddhism as practiced throughout India and Tibet and describes the process of entering the Buddhist path through study and reflection. In the first chapter, we read about the structure of Buddhist education and the range of its subjects, and we're treated to a rousing litany of the merits of such instruction. In the second chapter, Butön introduces us to the buddhas of our world and eon, three of whom have already lived, taught, and passed into transcendence, before examining in detail the fourth, our own Buddha Shakyamuni. Butön tells the story of Shakyamuni in his past lives, then presents the path the Buddha followed (the same that all historical buddhas, including future ones, must follow). Only at the conclusion of the discussion of the result—enlightenment—do we return to the specific case of the Buddha and his twelve deeds. This marks the start of the history of the Buddha as most of us imagine it. After the Buddha's story, Butön recounts three compilations of Buddhist scriptures, and then quotes from sacred texts that foretell the lives and contributions of great Indian Buddhist masters, which he then relates. The chapter concludes with the tale of the Buddhist doctrine's eventual demise and disappearance, a concept and a tale squarely within the Mahayana. The final chapter, the shortest of the three, gives an account of the inception and spread of Buddhism in Tibet, focused mainly on the country's kings and early adopters of the foreign faith. The watershed debate at Samyé Monastery between representatives of Chinese and Indian styles of Buddhist practice is given the most attention in this chapter. An afterword by Ngawang Zangpo, one of the translators, discusses and contextualizes Butön's exemplary life, his turbulent times, and his prolific works. Printed Pages: 444. 037859

Romanticism’s Child: An Intellectual History of James Tod’s Influence on Indian History and Historiography
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2017; 0199465894; Hardcover; New; New;
The fascination of Colonel James Tod, one of the earliest colonial ethnographers, with the cultural practices, communities and histories of the people of Rajasthan led to a meticulous compilation of information about the region and its people, whom he deeply admired. His two-volume masterwork, Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, published in London in 1829 and 1832, inspired generations of popular renderings of the past, including nationalist and vernacular imaginations in the whole of South Asia. Tod’s narrative style reflects the influence of Romanticism, medieval feudalism, and civilizational progress starkly at variance with the official colonial view of the pre-British past of India. What was the source of this ‘romanticism’ of Colonel Tod? Susanne and Lloyd Rudolph contextualize the formation of Tod’s ideas and their reception through documents written by or to Tod, which help in situating and contextualizing his life work. Interestingly, the second part of the book collects the exchange between Tod and James Mill in the British parliament over the administration of British territories in India with Rajputana as a case study. This book thus significantly contributes to the exploration of knowledge-formation in colonial India and its contemporary influence. Printed Pages: 256. 111562

Experiencing the State
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195672437; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
This volume on the state departs from a conventional analysis that universalizes and standardizes what the state is, does, and means. The authors, in this volume, mean to engage state and stateness as it is encountered in everyday life. They locate the state in time, space, and circumstance so that it is contingent and evocative rather than definitive and authoritative. The study discusses what we may think or say about the state, what images are evoked, the formative discourse dealing with the state and its various manifestations through social and cultural forms. This non-essentialist perspective has eight essays which deal directly with India and South Asia with contributors ranging from James Scott, Arundhati Roy, Sudipta Kaviraj, Lloyd Rudolph, Phil Oldenberg, and Paul Brass. Explaining Indian Democracy: A Fifty-year Perspective, 1956-2006: Volume I: The Realm of Ideas: Inquiry and Theory
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0195693647; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The essays in the three-volume series, Explaining Indian Democracy: A Fifty-Year Perspective, 1956–2006, span over five decades of the Rudolphs’ scholarship on Indian politics. The first published essay analyses the results of one of the first random sample surveys done in India. The last argues for methodological pluralism and ‘situated knowledge’ in American political science as against the universal methodological and knowledge claims of rational choice. The essays in The Realm of Ideas: Inquiry and Theory, like those in its companion volumes, The Realm of Institutions: State Formation and Institutional Change and The Realm of the Public Sphere: Identity and Policy, contextualize and assess the democratic experience in India. The chapters in The Realm of Ideas, the first of the three volumes, explore how modes of inquiry, kinds of knowledge, construction of categories, and historical context shape political analysis and explanation. They also critique key concepts such as political culture, modernization, civil society, and orientalism and apply them to questions of social change. 022639

Business and the Buddha: Doing Well by Doing Good
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 0861715446; First Edition; Paperback; New;
All businesses want to do well, but can they also do good? Lloyd Field says yes, and moreover, no business can afford to focus simply on ?doing well.??? Increasingly, public assessment of a business???s worth must take into account its consideration of shared human values. That doesn???t mean a business can???t or should not compete; it means that investing in efforts to build a better society can, on many levels, be an asset. In this book, Field lays out the guidelines for putting social responsibility, both corporate and individual, into practice without sacrificing profits. Drawing from traditional Buddhist teachings, Field shows how, with attention to ethics, skillful means, and corporate responsibility, entrepreneurs and decision-makers can achieve new levels of happiness and security both inside the company and out, while acting as a powerful force for positive global change. New World of Indigenous Resistance: Noam Chomsky and Voices from North, South, and Central America
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 812504325X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
After centuries of colonization, the ongoing struggle to preserve communal knowledge, rituals, language, traditions, and teaching and learning practices has taken on even more significance in the increasingly standardized world of globalization. For many indigenous societies, protecting community-based customs has involved the rejection of state-provided education, raising a series of interconnected issues regarding autonomy, modernity and cultural sustainability. In New World of Indigenous Resistance, these questions are approached from multiple perspectives by means of an innovative exchange between linguist and human rights advocate Noam Chomsky, and more than twenty scholars, activists and educators from across the Americas. In response to Chomsky’s ideas, voices from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the United States, and Uruguay draw from their first-hand experience and scholarship, speaking to, with, and at times against Chomsky’s views. South Asia Nation Building and Federalism
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382652274; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"Multiple paths to nation building in South Asia" is the most popular and controversial subject. Identity-based politics, whether one rejects or accepts, is equally a pressing problem for the countries of the region. The traditional route to national integration and political order is being questioned by the emergence of newer trends in national politics of each country of the region. Questions of minorities, ethnic, regional and suppressed groups (dalits and other highly marginalized communities) need to be tackled by taking appropriate policies so that such groups do not develop the feeling of deprivation. If inclusive democracy and empowerment of marginalized communities can become one of the positive aspects of nation building project, federalism has become yet another design for some countries. Nepal's aspiration for federalism is not the product of well-thought out design, but it has become imperative for nation building in course of time. India and Pakistan are likely to increase some more federal units to address the demands of peoples residing in respective areas making nation building as an ongoing process.Printed Pages: 170. 103192

16594 Lokenath Bhattacharya; Translated from Bengali By Meenakshi Mukherjee
The Virgin Fish of Babughat (Babughatter Kumari Mach)
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 0195665775; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The Virgin Fish of Babughat is written in the form of a diary kept by an inmate of a very unusual prison. Filling up blank sheets of paper is part of his punishment, and his desperate attempt to hold on to a language that is slipping away from him gives these pages a strange intensity and vividness. The novel is as much a political allegory as a parable of a world about to be taken over by consumerist culture. The prison camp tries to turn men and women into mindless carnal creatures devoid of individual identity and human values. The title of the novel is a reminder of the reduction of female flesh to the level of a commodity the tastiest fish are those that have not spawned, and so are the women who have never been pregnant.Yet it is not a dystopic novel, because, in a low key manner, it also celebrates the ultimate indestructibility of love and the desire for freedom. Written three years before the Emergency was declared in India, The Virgin Fish of Babughat anticipat es the chilling possibilities of power without accountability, and critiques the complicity of ordinary citizens in creating such a situation.
