Index to History of Dharmasastra By Pandurang Vaman Kane: Comprehensive Guide to Hindu Rites and Rituals
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8121507626; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Words of Indian origin have been insinuating themselves into English ever since the end of the reign of Elizabeth and the beginning of that of King James, when such terms as calico, chintz, and gingham had long passed into English language and literature. Such foreign words started being used quite frequently 185 years ago when, soon after the middle of the last century the number of English men in Indian services, civil and military expanded with the great acquisition of dominion then made by the East India Company. Hobson-Jobson in original compilation was intended to deal with all that class of words which, not in general pertaining to the technicalities of administration, recur in the daily intercourse of English in India, either as expressing ideas really not provided for by English language or supposed by speakers to express something not capable of just denotation by any English term. The work, in the long course of its compilation underwent some modification and enlargement of scope which has been presented to readers. Those who have studied the pages of Hobson-Jobson have agreed in classing it as unique among similar works of reference, a volume which combines interest and amusement with instruction, in a manner which few other dictionaries if any, have done. This is an index on the subject of purification to History of Dharmasastra, written by Prof. P.V. Kane. This work was chosen because it is encyclopaedic and generally acknowledged to be the definitive work on Hinduism. The topic of purification is the major theme of this index. Related topics such as sin, penance, and expiation, etc. are also covered. The idea of purification remains at the core of rituals such as marriage, birth, death and upanayana. These themes are integral parts of Hindu rituals and liturgy and affect the social ethics of Hindus. This index consists of two parts. Part One is arranged according to topic and Part Two is arranged by the author or source. Prof. Kane's work is a classic work on Hindu law and religion and its index would be just as useful to scholars and laymen alike. Printed Pages: 295. 022618

Vedic Management: The Dharmic and Yogic Way
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121207193; Hardcover; New; New;
Bhagavad Gitaays been an inherent tension in the Vedic system between the negative and affirmative approaches, between life in the world and renunciation. The book explores the manner in which Dharma and Yoga harmonize the tension between the inner and the outward. The book goes on explain how Vedic management, through the concepts of dharma and yoga, encourage Peace and concord through selflessness and cooperative behavior and the sacrifice of the ego, opinions and strongly held beliefs so as to harmonize with fellow human beings. The Upanishad system which interiorizes Vedic thought through the Yogic way of Meditation and contemplation is also examined. The book goes on to delineate the concept of dharmic management as applied to social concerns and the polity. This is through an examination of the dharmashastras and the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The yogic system as elaborated by Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita is studied to see its impact on management. The conclusion reached is that Lord Sri Krishna makes management more an Art than a Science while also making the system flexible and creative. The Normative Vedic management system was utilized by Gandhi to set up an Organization that toppled one of the mightiest empires known to history. The manner in which this was done is also examined. Some reference from the latest management literature are also there and it is left to the reader to decide whether Vedic management is relevant today.Printed Pages: 230. 105979

Lost Addresses: A Memoir of India 1934-1955
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789385285066; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Krishna Bose was born Krishna Chaudhuri on 26 December 1930 in Dhaka, to East Bengali parents settled in Calcutta. In December 1955 she married Sisir Kumar Bose, son of the barrister and nationalist leader Sarat Chandra Bose and nephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. She is a multifaceted personality-a professor, writer, researcher, broadcaster, social worker and politician. Lost Addresses is Krishna’s story of her childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. It vividly describes Calcutta, Bengal and India in the 1930s and 1940s and the early years after Independence. Krishna’s memories of growing up and coming of age are set in the social, cultural and political milieus of the time. The East Bengal heritage and the life of the Calcutta intelligentsia at its prime feature prominently, but this is no private nor provincial memoir. India and the world were then in great ferment and transition. Krishna re-lives how she experienced World War II, the Quit India movement of 1942, the Bengal famine of 1943-44, the Red Fort trials of the Indian National Army (INA) officers in 1945-46, the Great Calcutta killings of 1946, and Partition and Independence in Delhi in 1947.Printed Pages: 204 with b/w illustrations. 102447

Writer, educationist and three-time Lok Sabha MP from Kolkata, Krishna Bose gives a compelling account of her journey from the time she was a schoolgirl witnessing some of the tragic scenes that accompanied Partition to her stint as chairperson of the Parliamentary standing committee on external affairs. She writes vividly of her experiences as an academic and a working mother and gives a ringside view of the drama of election campaigns, the complexities of parliamentary politics and the forces shaping India’s foreign policy at the turn of the new millennium. Elements of Buddhist Iconography
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Manohar Publishers & Distributors; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8173044325; Hardcover; New; New;
The Elements of Buddhist iconography was first published by the Harvard University Press in 1935. This new edition, ably edited and revised by Krishna Deva has been enriched by incorporating the additions made by Coomaraswamy in his own hand in his personal copy.This volume is a sustained demonstration of Coomaraswamy's knowledge of the external features of iconography, his knowledge of the entire metaphysical tradition underlying the iconography, as well as the corresponding traditions in Islam and Christianity. It is a demonstration of the characteristic of a universe of discourse based on a detailed textual, iconographic and comparative studies that include the metaphysics phraseologies and iconographies of Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam.Buddhist art in India begins about the second century BCE, with a well-developed set of symbols in its iconography. But it does not seem possible to completely separate Buddhism as religion and art from the main current of lndian religion and art, or to think these symbols suddenly developed as a new creation. Coomaraswamy believes that the source of early iconography of the Buddhist art is in still earlier Vedic and Upanisadic conceptions. In addition, he noticed many surprising similarities between passages in the Vedic literature and in the medieval Christian theologians and mystics. The illuminating parallels found in the non-Indian traditions convinced him that mystical theology the world over is the same.The present study deals with the basic symbols of Buddhist art, viz. the Tree of Life, the Earth-Lotus, the Word-Wheel, the Lotus-Throne and the Fiery Pillar, and shows that these symbols can be traced back beyond their first representation in Buddhist iconography through the an iconic period of the Brahmanical Vedas, even into the ?gvedic period itself, and that they represent a universal Indian symbolism and set of theological concepts.Printed Pages: 146 with 15 plates. 101626

Panchatantra: Five Wise Lessons
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8178222329; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Panchatantra is an ancient work, perhaps more than 2000 years old, which was originally written in Sanskrit. Over the years many translations have been made into more than 50 languages, proving its timeless endurance and popularity. Although a work of fiction, it contains numerous references to the Indian scriptures loosely known as the Vedas. Indeed, the Panchatantra itself is considered a kind of scripture, known as a niti-sastra, which means a text on worldly wisdom. Certainly the purpose of the work is much more than mere entertainment. As its author Visnu sharma says in the Preamble, it aims to 'awaken the intelligence,' and equip its readers with the ability to handle most situations they are likely to encounter in this world.Printed Pages: 2012. 102602

Pravarasena's Setubandha: Original Text in Prakrit Accompanied with Sanskrit Rendering
Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607249; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
Literary traditions of Sanskrit and Prakrit were highly synchronized for the last two millennia, giving a fillip to arts, cultures and literary creativity. Pravarasena's Setubandha (or Ravanavaho), a fifth-century composition and the first Mahakavya in Prakrit, is an excellent example of this synchronization, and it has exercised unmistakable influence on Bharavi and Magha. This volume, Prof. K.K. Handiqui's English translation of Setubandha with detailed introduction and notes, is a monumental work of the past century in Prakrit Mahakavyas. The author has undertaken this onerous task with amazing accuracy and analytical acumen. In this “critical translation”, Prof. Handiqui recovers and clarifies the original meanings, Pravarasena's intentions and implications of poetic expression in Setubandha. While doing so, he has consulted vast mass of Sanskrit commentaries, without compromising his own authority. Therefore it brings to one's attention Pravarasena's meticulous style and his use of Prakrit language. This is the first comprehensive edition of Setubandha that includes the original text in Prakrit with its chaya in Sanskrit, a complete translation in English with exhaustive notes. This scholarly title should invoke keen interest among the academia of Sanskrit and Prakrit, students and researchers, as it represents a significant phase in the development of Kavya poetry, after Kalidasa.Printed Pages: 822. 100476

Education, Conflict and Peace
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125062475; Softcover; New;
The past few years have witnessed an alarming rise in prejudice and aggression in India. A nation like ours, pluralistic in nature and secular by Constitution, could have prevented this by educating young minds to appreciate diversity, peace and tolerance as basic elements of democracy.In this crisply argued book, Krishna Kumar shows why education fails to create a reflective ethos and a sense of common cause. He examines the structure and content of education to locate conflicting positions in key areas of knowledge. Recent reforms in curriculum design mark a positive beginning, but they remain isolated and fragile. The tendency to overwhelm students with unnecessary minutiae of detail persists in most States. Science is taught like religion and social sciences, such as history, deny students the opportunity to learn about differences and conflict. Classroom routines teach children to live in fear and to mind their own business.Krishna Kumar places the problems of education in the broader perspective of political and economic change. His own pedagogy of peace is constructed around the idea that acknowledging conflict is the first step towards developing awareness and other intellectual skills needed to live together peacefully.This is a very timely book—not only for education policy-makers and curriculum designers grappling with the task of determining what should be taught in schools, but also for teachers, parents, and every individual concerned about how our vast and complex system of education could be adjusted to meet the needs of the country. Indian Economics and Social Traditions
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8178351005; Hardcover; New; New;
This book presents the Indian view on modern economic thoughts. The core thinking is based on the Indian tradition. It has been applied to modern issues. The central question is how do we make economics and society an instrument of self-realisation rather than that of getting entrapped in materialism. The book is not revivalist. There are many things in the Indian tradition which need to be changed in the light of new circumstances. It is probably the first effort of its kind. The book is a must read for all those interested in.Printed Pages: 218. 106064

Phulkari: From the Realm of Women's Creativity
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8173054657; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 x 24 Cm
India has a great tradition of embroidery prevalent in each and every region; each of them different from the other. There are several embroidery styles, which have become popular nationally and internationally and have become synonymous to the region they come from. For example, Kashmir is known for amlikar work on shawls, Himachal Pradesh for Chamba rumal, Uttar Pradesh for chikan work, Gujarat for mochi work and Punjab for phulkari. Each one has its own characteristics and phulkari stands out to be different among all these. Phulkari is a very refined embroidery work of Punjab and Haryana. It has more emotional, social and cultural value which is very rare. Embroidered with silk thread on cotton base, phulkari is a shawl made by the mother for her young daughter or daughter-in-law. Phulkari literally means floral work and is also called Bagh, which literally means a garden. In the olden times, accomplishment of a bride and her mother was judged by the beautiful phulkari and bagh they made. Even the affluence of the families was judged by the number and work of phulkari and bagh they gave to their daughters in their trousseau. They also made ceremonial pieces which were used in marriages, at the time of birth of a child and during festive occasions. Phulkaris are known for their vibrant colours, geometric pattern and gaiety which are an integral part of the life and tradition of the people of Punjab. The present volume catalogues and documents the selected and rare pieces of Phulkari from the archives of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). Printed Pages: 124. 100109

Agrarian Structure in Central India and the Northern Deccan: A Study in Vakataka Inscriptions
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121500508; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
An extremely conspicuous lacuna of the historiography of the Vakatakas has been an almost complete absence of any discussion on their economy. The present work makes an attempt to fill this gap. The work takes an overview of economy of the Vakatakas during c. A.D. 300-500 and focuses on its agrarian structure on the basis of epigraphic evidences. An interesting pattern of settlements pointing towards the burgeoning rural settlements and contraction of urbanism has been delineated in the larger perspective of environmental setting. An attempt has also been made to identify the agents of this new socio-economic transformation and the work concludes by highlighting that the Vakataka territory was the matrix of the earliest articulated tendencies of feudal beginnings. Apart from being the first survey of the economy of the Vakatakas, the cartographic delineation of various aspects of their inscriptions is yet another distinguishing feature of the work. Five maps included here show the chronological and geographical distribution of all Vakataka inscriptions and villages donated by the Vakatakas; settlements other than donated villages as well as the geographical configuration of administrative divisions. The texts of some newly discovered inscriptions have also been included. Printed Pages: 146 with 5 maps. 000347

Mira Bai and Her Padas
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121507863; Second Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Mira Bai belonged to the royal family of the Ranas of Mewara and was a staunch devotee of Krishna, worshipping him in the madhurya bhava of Vaishnavism. In the earlier part of her life she was ill-treated by her brother-in-law who even tried various means to kill her, but Krishna was ever her protector. Fed up, she went away to Merata, her maternal home and from there to Vrindavana and then to Dvaraka, where, according to traditional belief, she merged with the image of Krishna. Mira's verses have a musical ring and a number of them have been recorded on discs and cassettes. There have been many recensions of her padas. This English verse translation of eighty-one of them aims at giving the best of these. It is hoped that Mira's verses, along with the detailed introduction giving her life and times and her art, will create renewed interest in this renowned saint-poet. Printed Pages: 138. 031866

Bahina Bai and Her Abhangas
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121507871; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Bahina Bai, a Maharashtrian saint-poet, was born in Devagava, a village about two hundred miles from Bombay (now Mumbai), in a poor family of farmers. She was of religious bent of mind, but her husband was averse to her devotional trend, and particularly to the saint Tukarama who was of low caste, and whom she chose as her guru. Her devotion to Tukarama was also resented by other members of the higher caste. The cruel treatment of her husband and others, even made her think of suicide. However she persisted in her complete submission to Tukarama, and ultimately her family members relented. Bahina's abhangas (verses) written in Marathi, depict a rational attitude which tries to lay bare things threadbare. In this she is unique among the saints. Bahina is not as well known as she deserves to be. This book, with a detailed introduction giving her life and times and her art, along with an English translation in part verse and part prose, aims at making her work better known both here and in the West. The Poems of Suradasa
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170173698; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Suradasa, the blind saint-poet, lived in the sixteenth century during the establishment of the Mogul empire in India by Babur and its consolidation by Akbar. A Vaishnava of the Pushtimarga, he was spiritually inspired by Vallabhacharya and composed his outstanding work, the Surasagara ‘Ocean of Poetry’, closely following the Bhagavata, which narrates the deeds of Krishna, whose, staunch devotee he was. His numerous padas composed in Brajbhasha are a treasure house of the very best Hindi poetry on a level with that of Tulasidasa, the author of the Ramayana but unfortunately his poems remain comparatively much less known to the Western world. This English translation of some of the verses of his Surasagara endeavours to provide the reader with a representative selection from the various sections of this work in English verse along with the transliterated version of the text, and in English prose for the narrative portions. The selection highlights Krishna as the Lord and as the amorous lover of Radha and the milkmaids of Braj. Printed Pages: 364. 107913

Bhakti and the Bhakti Movement: A New Perspective: A Study in the History of Ideas
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 812150029X; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book makes a total departure from some well-established notions about bhakti and the Bhakti movement. It questions and rejects the current academic definition of bhakti and the portrayals of the Bhakti movement in the light of that definition. Trying to recapture the generic meaning of the term bhakti, the author postulates that bhakti by itself does not suggest any ideational or doctrinaire position. According to her, a restricted and erroneous definition of bhakti has served as the substratum for all theorisations about the Bhakti movement, when taken as a whole. What is reckoned as the Bhakti movement, she states, is an amalgam of a number of devotional movements of a divergent nature. A monolithic view of these can be taken only if their common denominator bhakti is understood in its generic sense. Not otherwise. In short, the author has called into question the whole conceptual framework and the basic terms of reference used hitherto for the study of bhakti and the Bhakti movement. This is significant since they have had the sanction of more than one hundred years of scholarship, and have not been questioned till now. She has done so on the strength of her being able to trace back the origins of the errors she has underlined. The author has tried to establish the fact that the accepted academic definition of bhakti is a modern construction; and that it was artificially formulated by certain Western Indologists of the nineteenth century with the aid of criteria which had no relevance in the context of Hinduism. The process of its formulation has been examined historiographically in this critique to show how it had gradually taken shape between 1846 and 1909. The reasons for its subsequent incorporation in modern Indian scholarship have also been made clear. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach in this book, Dr. Sharma has grappled with many vital issues related to the Bhakti theme. It is hoped that this erudite work would serve as a landmark in the study of bhakti and the Bhakti movement. Printed Pages: 360. 037955

Lilavati of Bhaskracarya: A Treatise of Mathematics of Vedic Tradition
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 812081777X; Fourth Edition; Softcover; New;
The names 'Bhaskaracarya' and 'Lilavati' are well-known. If a student displays outstanding talent in Mathematics, the school teacher lovingly calls the student ìSecond Bhaskaracaryaî. Many legends about Lilavati are in vogue. It is but natural that Indians have a special interest in Bhaskaracarya and his works, especially the Lilavati. Professor N.H. Phadke has taken great pains in the preparation of the present work A New Light on Lilavati, thus filling a void. In the Lilavati, Arithmetic is presented as an enjoyable playful activity. Professor Phadke has admirably succeeded in preserving this spirit in the A New Light on Lilavati. Since Professor Phadke studied many books in Sanskrit, Hindi, English and Marathi, he could have easily given scholarly notes and references all over. But the author has resisted that temptation and has given the relevant supplementary information in six appendices. So the book is easy to read and the readers enjoy the playful atmosphere. The Lilavati is a book on Arithmetic written in the twelfth century. Techniques for the solution of problems are simple and easy to use and, moreover, there is a lot of interesting information in the problems presented therein. In 1150 AD, Bhaskaracarya (b. 1114 AD), renowned mathematician and astronomer of Vedic tradition composed Lilavati as the first part of his larger work called Siddhanta Siromani, a comprehensive exposition of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, number theory and related topics. Lilavati has been used as a standard textbook for about 800 years. This lucid, scholarly and literary presentation has been translated into several languages of the world.Printed Pages: 226. 102633

Gandhi’s Free Communication and Free Press
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351281672; Hardcover; New; New;
In the contemporary decade of development wherein communication though has touched the abounding heights of technology, still is barred under the clutches of social and political dominance. Journalism, the essential derivative of communication has also been the victim of this chaotic syndrome. Free communication and freedom of press have always been the remedies of the crawling development that has dissolved the country in its propounding commercialisation.‘Gandhi's Free Communication and Free Press', sails through the barriers to the liberty of communication and thereby journalism, and presents a Gandhian perspective to bridge the gap between rights and freedom. The struggle for independence in the history has now been transformed into the struggle for free communication as is illustrated in this work. Printed Pages: 240. 111013

Theology, Political Theory, and Pluralism: Beyond Tolerance and Difference
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521870038; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
How can we live together in the midst of our differences? This is one of the most pressing questions of our time. Tolerance has been the bedrock of political liberalism, while proponents of agonistic political thought and radical democracy have sought an answer that allows a deeper celebration of difference. Kristen Deede Johnson describes the move from tolerance to difference, and the accompanying move from epistemology to ontology, within recent political theory. Building on this ‘ontological turn’, in search of a theological answer to the question, she puts Augustine into conversation with recent political theorists and theologians. This theological option enables the Church to envision a way to engage with contemporary political society without losing its own embodied story and practices. It contributes to our broader political imagination by offering a picture of rich engagement between the many different particularities that constitute a pluralist society. • Introduces key movements in political theory to a theological audience • Offers a way for Christians to be engaged in a pluralistic society without losing their identity • Enables political theorists and theologians to better understand the framework of Augustine's thought and its relevance today Contents 1. Introduction; 2. The recent journey of liberal tolerance; 3. Beyond tolerance to difference; 4. Augustine and the theological turn; 5. Towards a theology of public conversation; 6. Conclusion. Resisting Reform?: Water Profits and Democracy
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298740; First Edition; Paperback; New;
A wide range of people and organisations, united by either a belief in market-based economics or a financial stake in the water business or both, are convinced that water should primarily be treated as a commodity to be bought and sold so that all water services can cover their costs. To this end, they advocate private ownership of water supply with the underlying objective of profit generation. Unfortunately, the benefits of such reasoning are skewed, and while it has been put into practice around the world, many people have come out as losers in this bargain. Resisting Reform? Water Profits and Democracy critically examines the attempts that have been made to ‘reform’ Bangalore’s water supply and situates them in their global and national context and in that of the city’s broader development. It looks at how the ‘reforms’ have entered government policy and how they have been opposed, principally by the many poor in the city. This book also describes how involving private players is not the best way to ensure an equitable water supply and that treating water as a commodity is a dangerous principle to adopt for running any water service, be it public or private. This book will be a rich resource for professionals and activists working in the areas of natural resources management, globalisation, development studies and public policy. It will also be of much interest to research scholars and media and policy watchers. Printed Pages: 184. 028796

LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer), (Identities in Select Modern Indian Literature)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 819257024X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The invisibility accorded to queer literary works in India has a systematic sinister agenda of silencing. Such a hidden target can be countered only by cataloguing the still unexplored queer texts in various Indian languages and by developing unique critical tools to analyse these texts in a such a manner that helps in excavating the convoluted layers and subversive potential of queer identities. This book aims at developing an exclusive literary framework to analyse the Indian queer literary works. In all, there are seven chapters which deal with the themes of plurality of lesbian existence, ambivalent adaptation techniques adopted by the writers to grant visibility to subaltern sexualities, overlapping of class and homosexuality, the development of exclusive queer aesthetics by inversion of accepted mode of literary language, imagery and techniques, the doubly marginalized identity of lesbian diaspora and the specific rift between lesbianism, feminism and queer activism in Indian context as presented in literary studies. It also deals with the issues of biphobia, violence on hijra identity (perhaps one of the most marginalized identity in LGBTQ movement), the depiction of symbiotic relationship between space, sexual identity and sexual citizenship in Indian literary texts and the efforts made by the writers to homosexualize various so-called normative spaces.Printed Pages: 296. 100538

Beyond the Lines: An Autobiography
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174369104; Hardcover; New; New;
As a young law graduate in Sialkot (now in Pakistan), Kuldip Nayar witnessed at first hand the collapse of trust between Hindus and Muslims who were living together for generations, and like multitude of population he was forced to migrate to Delhi across the blood-stained plains of Punjab. From his perilous journey to a new country and to his first job as a young journalist in an Urdu daily, Nayar’s account is also the story of India. From his days as a young journalist in Anjam to heading India’s foremost news agency, UNI and from mainstream journalism to starting his now immensely popular syndicated column, ‘Between the Lines’, Nayar has always stood for the freedom of press and journalism of courage. Widely respected for his columns, his autobiography opens on the day Pakistan Resolution was passed in Lahore in 1940 and takes us on a journey through India’s story of a nation working on its foreign policy, development plans, relations with neighbouring countries, and dealing with coalition politics among others. From events of historical and political relevance like Tashkent Declaration and the 1971 war and the liberation of Bangladesh, to interviewing Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mujibur Rahman and from meeting Pakistan’s father of nuclear bomb, Dr A.Q. Khan, to his close association with Lal Bahadur Shastri and Jayaprakash Narayan, Nayar’s narrative is a detailed inside view of our nation’s past and present.The new edition of Kuldip Nayar's widely popular autobiography, Beyond the Lines, now comes with several changes including his remarks relating to Shekhar Gupta, Editor, the Express Group, and his reference to a former president of Sikh Student's Union, both of which he retracted and regretted for at the launch. All subsequent editions of the book come with these changes. 108516

Feminist Futures: Re-imagining Women, Culture and Development
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8189013610; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"Globalization and the failure of development have led to the feminization of poverty, environmental degradation and an uncertain future for global peace and security. Development studies has reached an impasse, both in its theoretical paradigms and its practical prescriptions. Too economistics, too little focused on the daily lives of women, and devoid of vision, the field needs a radical imaginative overhaul. The contributors to this book who work at the intersection of cultural studies, feminist studies and critical development studies, articultae a new theoretical framework that they call Women, Culture and Development. They apply it to a range of issues and through a series of shorter think pieces, present their ideas to the future." Contents "Acknowledgemets Notes on Contributors Abbreviations 1.
