My Experiments With Truth the autobiography of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (or Mahatma Gandhi) covers his life from early childhood through to 1920, and is a popular and influential book. It was initiated at the insistence of Swami Anand and other close co-workers of Gandhi, in his mother-tongue Gujarati entitled Satyana Prayogo athva Atmakatha.Mahatma Gandhi was a charismatic leader who brought the case for India’s independence to world attention. His philosophy of nonviolence, for which he coined the term satyagraha, has influenced nonviolent resistance movements to this day.For Gandhi, Truth was the sovereign principle; inclusive of many other spiritual principles and schools of thought.In this autobiography, Gandhi has recounted the period from his birth (1869) up to the year 1921. The Bible in India: Hindoo Origin of Hebrew and Christian Revelation (Interfaith Studies Revived: 3)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480143; Reprinted; Hardcover; New; New;
This legendary interpretation compares the life of `Christna' (Shri Krishna) with that of `Christ' (Lord Jesus Christ) and concludes that it could not have been a coincidence that the stories of the two religions, to a great extent similar in terms of the natural order of precursors and successors; progenitors and progeny; could also mean similarity in the teachings of Christ and Christna. The Author though could not form the opinion that Jesus was/was not in India; he is somehow sure that the Gospels could be based on the ancient Indian mythology.The book is the summation of various parts, to help the readers in getting an in-depth knowledge of the subject. Part I gives an overall coverage of India's relation to Antiquity; Part II presents revelations of Moses and Hebrew Society, then comes Part III which encapsulates Hindoo genesis in terms of the Virgin Devanaguy and Jezeus Christna. In the last Part, the Author has tried to show that the `Christian idea' is a Hindoo origin and there is a high degree of bonding between Christ and Christna.This informative book covers subjects like History, Religion, Sociology, Philosophy, Christianity and Biographical & Mythological narratives. It is a must to have for a Church Historian, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Hindu Pundits, Sociologists, Philosophers, Researchers, or anyone interested in knowing about the inter-linkages between the stated religions and societies. Also, any student of the subject will be left less informed without having a reading of the book.Printed Pages: 336. 106420

Cine-Politics: Film Stars and Political Existence in South India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125053565; Hardcover; New; New;
Cine-politics explores the unique link established between cinema and politics in south India since the 1950s. Taking up the trajectories of three major stars—M. G. Ramachandran, N. T. Rama Rao and Rajkumar, from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, respectively— the book shows how the widespread political mobilisation of star charisma in south India—‘cine-politics’—sheds critical light on the nature of democratic political life in postcolonial India. Insisting on the centrality of both cinematic and political aspects in interpreting the cine-political event, the author locates the emergence of the phenomenon against the backdrop of demands for the linguistic reorganisation of the states soon after independence. The argument leads us through the various formal and narrative shifts enabling the production of a cinematic form that allowed marginalised populations, deprived of political existence in the newly forged nation, to enact the fantasy of popular sovereignty.Printed Pages: 224. 101851

Soviet Policy Towards the ARAB-Israeli Conflict 1948-1988
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1989; 8121202477; Hardcover; New; New;
This is a case Study of Soviet foreign Policy towards a Third World regioral conflict over the past 40 years, from the Stalin era to the advent of the Gorbachev era. While dealing at length with the Cold War, detente and post-delente phases of Soviet involvement in the Arab-Israeli conflict, some perennial questions relating to the Nature and conduct of Soviet foreign policy have been poignantly addressed.The theme of its progressive de-radicalization and eventual de-ideologization has been brought into bold relief. There is thus very little evidence to suggest that in this area the Ussr has been consistently acting from an ideological grand design. Rather, its diplomacy most often appears to be reactive to Events and responsive to opportunities. Soviet policy in this region appears to be conservative, ambivalent, shifting and compromising, rather than an adventurist or overtly revisionist policy.This synoptic but closely reasoned and lucidly written book will provide the reader with deep insights into the interventionist behaviour of a super-power in a Third World regional setting.Printed Pages: 179. 105722

16826 M. Monier Williams
A Sanskrit-English Dictionary
Chaukhamba Publications; New Delhi, India; 2011; Sixteenth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
Sir M. Monier-Williams had first published his English-Sanskrit Dictionary in 1851. Subsequently, he embarked upon this Sanskrit-English Dictionary, with the primary object of exhibiting, by a lucid etymological arrangement, the structure of the Sanskrit language, the very key-stone of the Science of Comparative Philology. The First Edition of this Dictionary was completed in 1872 in about twelve years. This is the new Edition (1899), greatly enlarged and improved in the light of criticisms for and against the first edition, numerous printed Sanskrit texts and works and especially the three Indian journeys The Author had undertaken. Though all lexicographers have to rely on the work of their earlier compeers, Sir Williams' work is unique and original in its plan and execution, the utility of which is seen in its repeated reprints. This is not a mere aggregation of words and meanings but the fruit of a colossal industry and experience with the actual treatises in the original language on a number of subjects. All the words are arranged etymologically and philologically with special reference to cognate Indo-European languages. The author refers to Several Authors and extant works. The work includes well over 1,80,000 words. This invaluable thesaurus serves far too well the needs of researchers and lovers of Sanskrit. There is an elaborate and informative Introduction detailing the inception and progress of this huge task, successfully completed with the collaboration of devoted scholars like Prof. E. Leumann, Prof. C. Cappeller and others.Printed Pages: 1367. 100587

Hinduism and its Sources: Vedic Literature-Tradition and Social and Religious Laws
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121510538; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Hinduism and its Sources by Sir Monier Monier-Williams is a text of great historical significance, in that it not only describes the essential elements that are constitutive of Hinduism, but also points out the underlying spirit of unity which, in the midst of diversity of races, languages and social usages, has enabled Hindus to survive all the external invasions and historical upheavals. It is this spirit of unity that has enabled Hinduism to be inclusive, tolerant and comprehensive. Starting from the Veda, Hinduism has embraced something from all religions, thereby enabling its followers to follow the path of salvation that suits them the best. As a consequence of this comprehensiveness, Hinduism contains all those essential material and spiritual, esoteric and exoteric, subjective and objective aspects that make religion meaningful and authentic. Thus Hinduism lays equal emphasis on the spiritual paths of action, knowledge and devotion. It is this comprehensiveness of Hinduism that marks this book. Printed Pages: 208. 028408

A Practical Grammar of the Sanskrit Language: Arranged with reference to the classical languages of Europe for the use of English Students
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8121509394; Third Impression; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Monier-Williams' grammar belongs to the category known as the Grammar of form which deals with the system of inflexions and syntactical usages, characteristics of a language. It recognizes the difficulties of the English learner accustomed to the Roman script. A whole chapter- the first- dealing with the Devanagari script with its pronunciation, classification, interchange of Sanskrit, Greek and Latin letters and method of writing takes full care of this problem. Then begins the adventurous journey through the labyrinth of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections. It is rounded-off with exercises in translation, parsing and a scheme of the more common Sanskrit metres. The student is so carefully conducted through all the intricate mazes of Sanskrit grammar, that at the end of the journey, he scarcely notices the peculiarities of Sanskrit- that it has three numbers for its nouns, pronouns and verbs, that its nouns have genders assigned to them by prescription and usage which cannot be altered; that one can speak of his spouse as dara (masculine), Bharya (feminine) and kaltram (neuter); that its verbs follow one of two patterns (pad) and are formed into ten groups (gan). He is fully equipped for his voyage across the ocean of classical Sanskrit. This book provides the open-sesame for all thos who seek the treasures of knowledge, wisdom and beauty lying hidden in the Sanskrit classics. None can afford to neglect this; for here Monier- Williams is at his best. Printed Pages: 428. 028464

Indian Muslims
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8121500273; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This is an attempt to portray the life of Indian Muslims in all its aspects, beginning with the advent of the Muslim and ending with the present day. In it Indian Muslim history has been divided into three phases-early, middle and modern-and the various aspects of life and activity have been discussed under orthodoxy, statesmanship and administration, religious thought, Sufism, poets and writers, architecture and art, and social life. As the purpose of the book is to help in understanding rather than to provide all the information available, only typical and significant ideas and personalities are discussed. Many questions are asked and discussed in the book which have so far been avoided or ignored. Is it possible to define the Indian Muslim? Are the Indian Muslims now, and have they ever been a homogenous community? Have the Indian Muslim, individually or collectively, possessed any recognized rights to judge and oppose the ruler on moral or religious grounds? If they have not, could the ruler claim to represent the Muslims as a religious community? What was, in fact, the status and the power of the official representatives of institutional religion? Were there any tensions within the Indian Muslim community, and if there were, what was their effect on the patterns of thought and behaviour? What was the nature and influence of the Sufis, and what were the transformations which occurred within Sufism in course of time? What was the character and the range of the relationships between Indian Muslims and the Hindus, and the forms in which they influenced each other? What was the Indian Muslim contribution to the development of literature, architecture and the minor arts, to the refinement of taste, to creation of a common culture, and from where did they derive the stimulus to make this contribution? This is the first comprehensive and objective sociological study of the Indian Muslim, and is written by one who has lived through the political and social conflicts of twentieth century India and is taking an active part in the emotional integration of the Indian people. State Failure and Human Miseries: A Study with Special Focus on Famines in British Malabar
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351281689; Hardcover; New; New;
This book deals with a more or less discarded piece of the history of famines in British Malabar – a region that presently constitutes the northern and central Kerala in India - during the 18th, 19th and first half of the 20th centuries . Wh at distinguishes this study from a host of scholarly works on famines in different parts of the world is (a) the analysis of issues on a macrohistoric frame-work with elaborate notes and references, (b) integrating in this frame-work the causes, consequences and features of famines in Malabar with the help of hitherto unused primary data in the regional and national archives, and (c) a book-length treatment, for the first time, of the casual mechanism precipitating hunger and destitution into full-blown famine, and its prevention and mitigation as the primary responsibility of the State, be it democratic, authoritarian or imperialistic. Despite being an original work, this book is expected to be highly useful for post-graduate teachers of British economic history as a reference text; for general readers to have a comprehensive view of the subject under study; and for new generation students to identify easily verifiable topics for further research, not necessarily of famine alone. The Vedantasutras with the Sribhasya of Ramanujacarya: Vol. III
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121504600; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present work Sribhasya, is the commentary on the Vedantasutras by Sri Ramanujacarya. Ramanuja wrote the commentary in a context which necessitated not merely the exposition of the tradition he represented, but also the refutations of the viewpoints of other philosophers like Sri Samkara Bhaskara and Yadava. The Sribhasya has a total of 157 adhikaranas with numerous aphorisms. The present volume contains 11 adhikaranas in which Ramanuja enters with penetrating insight into the detailed study of the Vedantasutras. According to him, the supreme Brahman "the Highest person is the creator, sustainer and destroyer of the universe, and he is distinct from matter the soul." It is his view that God is omniscient and omnipotent and who is wholly pure and full of all auspicious qualities. Ramanuja successfully explains the above viewpoints with his authentic exposition and interpretation of the upanisads. The analytical outline given in the book lucidly explains all these aspects in the present volume. Printed Pages: 413. 037377

1962 War: Supplying from the Air
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904299; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
There was a time, when the high and mighty Himalayas all along our northern borders were considered to be impregnable, making India safe from any aggression from the north. But, unfortunately, the myth of the Himalayan infallibility was shattered by the late Fifties, when the Chinese started making aggressive moves all along our Himalayan border and the threat from the north was looming large, from Ladakh in the west to the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) in the east. Thus, the Army had to spread out and deploy all over one of the highest, most inhospitable and desolate places on earth necessitating the stupendous task of airlift to provide it logistic support. A task that becomes even more commendable when we consider that this was done half a century ago when the Air Force was smaller, resources were meagre and the biggest aircraft available for the task was the Packet, a twin-piston engine aircraft with a limited ceiling. Much of the credit for the airlift operations under such difficult conditions goes to the late Air Marshal L.S. Grewal, then a Wing Commander, who led the operations from the front with his dedication, courage and flying ability.Printed Pages: 150. 104338

Building Legitimacy: Exploring State-Society Relations in Northeast India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0195692977; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This book compares two states in the Northeast with different socio-political trajectories—a relatively orderly Mizoram and a troubled Manipur—in order to understand the sources of political turmoil in the region. Taking the region as a case study, it examines the larger debates on success and failure in state-making. In discussing the divergent success of the two states in mitigating conflicts, Hassan demonstrates how in Mizoram the process of state-making helped consolidate public legitimacy and the authority of state leaders. He also shows how it strengthened the institutional capability of government agencies to provide services, manage group contestations, and avoid breakdown. At the same time, he illustrates how in Manipur, traditional centres of power—tribal and ethnic associations—gained in authority, compromising the legitimacy of the government and institutional capability of its agencies. The study highlights the important role, in the context of state breakdown, of the absence of an effective medium to regulate inter-group relationships and manage contestations over power, resources, opportunities, and identity. Rigorously comparative, it explains the show sources of disorder in Northeast India by focusing on the nature of state–society relations in the region. While acknowledging the important role of history in structuring this failure of the state system in the region, it suggests ways in which the path dependence can be overcome. 021622

Mughals and the Deccan: Political Relations with Ahmadnagar Kingdom
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2007; 817646614X; Hardcover; New; New;
Most of the modern studies on the theme of relations of the Mughals with the Deccan kingdoms are centered around either on the Deccan policy of the Mughals or their political aims in the Deccan. But these studies do not fully explain the varied problems relating to the relations of the Mughal empire with the Deccan kingdoms. The present work is an attempt to study the relations of the Mughal empire with one of the Deccan states, namely Ahmadnagar, which from its very inception was involved in the complex pattern of relationship with its northern neighbours, viz. Khandesh, Gujarat and Malwa. Simultaneously, with its southern neighbours, it was involved in mutual conflicts on one or the other issue. Because of their role played in the Deccan politics, the Nizam Shahi rulers attracted the active attention of the Mughal emperors from a very early date. In this work, the Mughals` growing involvement in the context of their relations with Ahmadnagar down to its final extinction, has examined in the light of contemporary Persian text and records. While dealing with the Mughal-Ahmadnagar relations, the role played by the Safawid rulers of Iran has also been examined in a separate Chapter, Whether their official moves against Qandahar were really planned to divert the mughal military pressure on the Deccan kingdom, is analysed in the light of a diplomatic correspondence available in the contemporary Persian chronicles and insha collections. Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8121205263; Hardcover; New; New;
Sangita Makaranda ascribed to Narada is an Ancient Sanskrit work on deshi music, which seems to be inclined towards the Tantric stream of Religious rituals. This work serves as an important link between 'Brihaddeshi' and 'Bharata Bhashyam'. The unique and Novel angles provided to the common Essentials of Music such as-nada, Shruti, Grama and treatment of Ragas makes it a solitary work of exceptionally special features. Although it is a very important and interesting piece of work, it has not received the due attention of music scholars. Its main feature is the treatment of Ragas; categorising them as male. Female and neuter.The present book the critical Study of Sangita Makaranda of Narada presents an elaborate and interesting study of all the special features of the Original work. The period and date of the work Sangita Makaranda has been decided after taking into Account the Views of various authors and internal evidences. The book comprises a Comparative and critical study of all the basic terms appearing in the original work. This work is a rare collection of definitions, descriptions and comments on all the essentials of music by other ancient reputed authors-from Bharata to Sharangdeva.Printed Pages: 282. 105812
