Resisting Reform?: Water Profits and Democracy
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298740; First Edition; Paperback; New;
A wide range of people and organisations, united by either a belief in market-based economics or a financial stake in the water business or both, are convinced that water should primarily be treated as a commodity to be bought and sold so that all water services can cover their costs. To this end, they advocate private ownership of water supply with the underlying objective of profit generation. Unfortunately, the benefits of such reasoning are skewed, and while it has been put into practice around the world, many people have come out as losers in this bargain. Resisting Reform? Water Profits and Democracy critically examines the attempts that have been made to ‘reform’ Bangalore’s water supply and situates them in their global and national context and in that of the city’s broader development. It looks at how the ‘reforms’ have entered government policy and how they have been opposed, principally by the many poor in the city. This book also describes how involving private players is not the best way to ensure an equitable water supply and that treating water as a commodity is a dangerous principle to adopt for running any water service, be it public or private. This book will be a rich resource for professionals and activists working in the areas of natural resources management, globalisation, development studies and public policy. It will also be of much interest to research scholars and media and policy watchers. Printed Pages: 184. 028796

LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer), (Identities in Select Modern Indian Literature)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 819257024X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The invisibility accorded to queer literary works in India has a systematic sinister agenda of silencing. Such a hidden target can be countered only by cataloguing the still unexplored queer texts in various Indian languages and by developing unique critical tools to analyse these texts in a such a manner that helps in excavating the convoluted layers and subversive potential of queer identities. This book aims at developing an exclusive literary framework to analyse the Indian queer literary works. In all, there are seven chapters which deal with the themes of plurality of lesbian existence, ambivalent adaptation techniques adopted by the writers to grant visibility to subaltern sexualities, overlapping of class and homosexuality, the development of exclusive queer aesthetics by inversion of accepted mode of literary language, imagery and techniques, the doubly marginalized identity of lesbian diaspora and the specific rift between lesbianism, feminism and queer activism in Indian context as presented in literary studies. It also deals with the issues of biphobia, violence on hijra identity (perhaps one of the most marginalized identity in LGBTQ movement), the depiction of symbiotic relationship between space, sexual identity and sexual citizenship in Indian literary texts and the efforts made by the writers to homosexualize various so-called normative spaces.Printed Pages: 296. 100538

Beyond the Lines: An Autobiography
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174369104; Hardcover; New; New;
As a young law graduate in Sialkot (now in Pakistan), Kuldip Nayar witnessed at first hand the collapse of trust between Hindus and Muslims who were living together for generations, and like multitude of population he was forced to migrate to Delhi across the blood-stained plains of Punjab. From his perilous journey to a new country and to his first job as a young journalist in an Urdu daily, Nayar’s account is also the story of India. From his days as a young journalist in Anjam to heading India’s foremost news agency, UNI and from mainstream journalism to starting his now immensely popular syndicated column, ‘Between the Lines’, Nayar has always stood for the freedom of press and journalism of courage. Widely respected for his columns, his autobiography opens on the day Pakistan Resolution was passed in Lahore in 1940 and takes us on a journey through India’s story of a nation working on its foreign policy, development plans, relations with neighbouring countries, and dealing with coalition politics among others. From events of historical and political relevance like Tashkent Declaration and the 1971 war and the liberation of Bangladesh, to interviewing Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mujibur Rahman and from meeting Pakistan’s father of nuclear bomb, Dr A.Q. Khan, to his close association with Lal Bahadur Shastri and Jayaprakash Narayan, Nayar’s narrative is a detailed inside view of our nation’s past and present.The new edition of Kuldip Nayar's widely popular autobiography, Beyond the Lines, now comes with several changes including his remarks relating to Shekhar Gupta, Editor, the Express Group, and his reference to a former president of Sikh Student's Union, both of which he retracted and regretted for at the launch. All subsequent editions of the book come with these changes. 108516

Marine Mammals of India
Universities Press; Hyderabad, India; 2003; 8173714657; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The intelligent dolphins, the giant whales and the inoffensive Dugong or sea-cow are among the most fascinating creatures in the wild. Every aspect of their way of life is astonishing—some of them use sound to “see” in the water, some of them dive to incredible depths in search of food, and some of them sing complex songs. Marine mammals are so intriguing that worldwide there is a multi-million dollar industry in just watching these animals. Yet, in India few are even aware that there are many of these creatures in the seas around the country—a full fourth of the world’s 120 or so species, in fact. This is due to the lack of information about them. Most existing records are scattered in various scientific journals. No book published so far covers this group of Indian wildlife adequately. This book is meant for a wide range of readers including children, wildlife enthusiasts and serious students. A significant part of the book is devoted to the more than 30 species accounts, which make the book a useful reference. Glimpses of their lifestyles are given through several essays dealing, for example, with the phenomenon of mass strandings of whales or the reputed ferocity of the Killer Whale. Further, color illustrations and character matrices meant for easy identification make Marine Mammals of India a useful field guide. The extensive bibliography makes the book a valuable research aid. The accounts of whaling and other threats faced by marine mammals highlight the conservation requirements of these animals. Printed Pages: 228. 027802

Merchants, Politics and Society in Early Modern India: Bihar: 1773-1820
E.J. Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 1996; 9004103031; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
This monograph deals with the social and political context of commercial activity in early modern India - a period during which Eastern India (and Bihar) experienced the transition to British colonial rule. As a point of departure from existing scholarly literature that usually studies this transition in material terms, this volume uses an approach that takes into account the configuration of social relations and political connections within which, it argues, commercial activity was embedded. Using merchants and bankers as its subjects, this book deals with the structure of trade and banking, the position of merchants in the cultural order and the role of the state in perpetuating this order. 'Thus this work adds much to our knowledge of the interaction beween commerce, politics and society in Bihar and contains insights that are of general relevance to many other regions of India.' S. Arasaratnam, South Asia. Readership: All those interested in the history of British imperialism, the social and economic history of early modern India and the nature of the impact of colonial rule on India. Kumkum Chatterjee, Ph.D. (1989) in History, Calcutta University, is Assistant Professor of History at the Pennsylvania State University. The author of several journal articles, she has a broad research interest in the social and economic history of early modern India. Printed Pages: 285 with 7 illustrations and maps. 038884

Flight at the Cuckoo's Behest: The Life and Times of a Tibetan Freedom Fighter
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8186230114; Softcover; New;
The Dalai Lama very Tibetan remembers with sadness and regret, was a Turning Point in the History of the 'Roof of the World'. With the Chinese communist occupation of their country and the genocidal destruction that followed, peace and freedom came to an end for the six million Tibetans. The only ray of hope in this bleak outlook was the safe arrival of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India. Here is an account of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's escape, told by one of those most closely associated with it. Risking his life and the safety of his family, Kunga Samten Dewatshang, a leader of the Chushi Gangdrug guerrillas, escorted the Dalai Lama from the Norbulingks summer palace, right under the Chinese army's nose, on the first lap to freedom. This is the story of a courageous man, a typical Khampa, A Native of eastern Tibet, who recalls a way of life that is now gone forever.And yet there remains hope. This is also a story of resilience, of people who, having lost almost everything, managed to recreate their lives and pass on their faith and values to their children. Crucial to this success has been the abiding Inspiration of the Dalai Lama's Presence. And thereby hangs the importance of his having been able to escape.Printed Pages: 235. 103652

People and Life on the Chars of South Asia: Dancing with the River
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382993780; Hardcover; New; New;
With this book Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt and Gopa Samanta offer an intimate glimpse into the microcosmic world of ‘hybrid environments’. Focusing on chars – the part-land part-water low-lying sandy masses that exist within the riverbeds in the floodplains of lower Bengal – the authors show how both as real-life examples and as metaphors chars straddle the conventional categories of land and water and how people who live on them fluctuate between legitimacy and illegitimacy. The result a study of human habitation in the nebulous space between land and water charts a new way of thinking about land people and people’s ways of life.Printed Pages: 294. 101488

The Circle of Karma: A Novel
Zubaan/Atlantic Publishers & Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8186706798; Softcover; New;
Caught in the everyday reality of household life, fifteen-year-old Tsomo is suddenly called upon to travel when her mother dies. She makes her first journey to a faraway village to light the ritual butter lamps in her mother?s memory. Beginning here, her travels take her to distant places, across Bhutan and into India. As she faces the world, a woman alone, Tsomo embarks on what becomes a life journey, in which she begins to find herself, and to grow as a person and a woman. The first novel by a woman to come out of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, The Circle of Karma, written in English, is rich in detailed descriptions of ritual life in Bhutan. The measured pace of its prose, the many nuances of the story, the different levels at which the narrative works, weave a complex tapestry of life in which the style and content are closely interwoven, each informing and enriching the other. Mystic Musings in Art and Poetry: Mystic Musings in Art and Poetry
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8192512118; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
`Mysticism' is "the pursuit of communion with, identity with, or conscious awareness of an ultimate reality, divinity, spiritual truth, or God, through direct experience, intuition or insight". The International Conference "Mysticism without Bounds" makes an attempt to explore the "mystical consciousness" from different disciplines, like religions (Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, etc.), sciences (biology, new physics, neuroscience, and logic), humanities (philosophy, theology, spirituality, psychology, etc.), and art forms (poetry, music, dance, visual arts and rituals).Researches reveal that certain common grounds do exist among the various forms of consciousness, scattered among the world's religions, theologies, sciences, philosophies and art forms. The discovery of such points of convergence holds out the possibility of creating a `new worldview', and this new world view can create an awareness of the essential `unity' of humanity. Let these scholarly papers, presented from different domains of art and poetry, help the inquisitive readers to discover this essential unity, which is often conceived and interpreted in terms of `God-experience' with its basis within non-phenomenal self, and a unity that promises the unity of all experiences within the phenomenal world.Printed Pages: 199. 106433
