India's Wildlife History: An Introduction
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8178241404; Softcover; New;
The swift decline and present plight of India's wildlife make regular headlines. This book asks how we came to this point. It introduces us to the long history of India's wildlife, culminating in the present crisis. Drawing on memoirs, archives and official records, Mahesh Rangarajan brings new insights to bear upon age-old encounters between human beings and the natural world in India. While highlighting major figures, such as Jim Corbett and M. Krishnan, he also puts the spotlight on less-known conservationists, landscapes and species. The focus of this book is on key landmarks in the history of Indian wildlife—both its conservation and decline. Chapters on the Ancient and Medieval periods sketch out India's early wildlife history. Nature's retreat against human onslaught over the past two centuries, and efforts to reverse that trend, are then addressed in greater detail. The past can serve as a guide to options for the present. It can reveal strategies for a future in which wildlife and people coexist. This book ends by looking ahead and identifies workable ways to conserve India's vanishing wildlife. An easy and lucid style makes this illuminating historical account a book for the general reader. Specialists and scholars will find a mine of information within it. This book is the best available short account of the history of Indian wildlife.Printed Pages: 152. 101848

Nature and Nation: Essays on Environmental History
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8178244594; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Writing India’s environmental history is not easy. The country’s territorial vastness, geographical complexity, and unusual biodiversity make the task difficult. Relatively few scholars have shown the historical range and intellectual depth required to tackle the area compellingly and with sophistication. Mahesh Rangarajan is among the foremost scholars in this field. The papers and books he has written or edited over more than two decades have helped craft and enlarge Indian environmental thought as a whole. They have established his reputation as a stimulating and wide-ranging historian-thinker in the discipline. The present collection comprises ten essays showcasing the core of Rangarajan’s thought and interventions. They include comparisons of the subcontinent with the world beyond, most specially with societies in Asia and Africa once under Western domination. They also include studies of specific historical conjunctures under regimes such as those of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Jomo Kenyatta and Julius Nyerere. Environmental shifts and continuities in a massive Asian society and polity are the central focus of this book. It discusses events and processes to show how specific environmental changes happened. It discusses the global ecological dimensions of Indian transformations. Economy and ecology, state-making and identity, nature and nation converge and cohere to make this a book for every thinking person.Printed Pages: 359. 102270

Shifting Ground: People, Animals, and Mobility in India's Environmental History
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 0198098952; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Environmental history of India has developed as an important field of inquiry in the last twenty-five years. While providing major insights, the existing scholarship has primarily focused on drawing sharp lines of distinction—those between geographical spaces (forest, rivers, farms), people (herders, farmers, townspeople), eras (colonial, post-colonial), and so on. The limitations of these sharp divides are brought to the forefront when there is a critical engagement with the region's contested environmental past. Shifting Ground brings together an array of essays that pose critical questions regarding India's environmental past and the way it has been approached by scholars. From debunking the idea of a primeval, pristine forest cover, to analysing the dynamics that shape human-animal relations, to examining the conflicts created by post-Independence projects of rural development and conservation—this volume touches upon the various aspects of environmental studies and juxtaposes them with social history, history of science and technology, and history of trade and culture. Drawing on original case studies the book not only explores the past, but also portrays how its traditions are often invoked to be deployed in contemporary conflicts—those that are often aggravated by the pressures on natural assets created by the recent prosperity and the vaulting aspirations of a rapidly expanding Indian middle class. Nature without Borders
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125056149; Hardcover; New; New;
This book explores the ways in which conservation of biodiversity can coexist with human actions and interests through a series of eight essays. These are tied together by an analytical introduction by the editors. It seeks to supplement the dominant discourse of conservation in India, which has traditionally depended on fencing off fragments of habitats and guarding them against human encroachment. However, formally designated Protected Areas occupy a very small proportion of territory and are therefore limited in value. Nature and natural processes transcend human boundaries and cannot be contained within the borders of nature reserves. This eclectic collection of essays explores inclusive conservation approaches in a spectrum of landscapes, from lake restoration in a metropolis to the issue of overfishing on the coastline. In the cases studied here, conservation action takes the producers’ or residents’ own imperatives into account along with wider ecological challenges. This method of conservation forges links with a range of actors: cultivators, herders, fishers and plantation owners, in addition to the government, the middle class and literati.Printed Pages: 280. 101931

Sri Hastamuktavali of Subhankara Kavi
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 1991; 8120808290; Hardcover; New; New;
Many texts on music, dance and drama continued to be written in different parts of India through the seventeenth century.Between the twelfth and the sixteenth century, regional styles emerged. Of the medieval texts Subha?kara Kavi's Srihastamuktavali belongs to the eastern tradition and is significant for its detailed treatment of the hastas (hand gestures). While there is ambiguity with regard to its origins, the text has been found in Maithili and in Assamese transcripts. It throws light on the language of the hand gestures which may have been followed in the eastern regions.The editor points out the similarities as also differences in the treatment of the subject in Srihastamuktavali, Na?yasastra and the Sa?gitaratnakara traditions. 101606

A Mundari-English Dictionary
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8121207959; Hardcover; New; New;
Mundari English Dictionary is a by product of the master researchers and scintillating scholarship of Sarat Chandra Roy, whose anthropological work on the Mundas of Chotanagpur and Santal Parganas remains unsurpassed even till today. His compilation of about six hundred words of Mundari language in a note book contained the seed out of which this dictionary has flourished. On the eve of its compilation about fifty years ago, Mundari language was spoken by over 60,000 Mundas and other akin tribals. The dialects of the Mundari family of speech, to which Santa, Birhar and other tongues belong, are, besides Chotanagpur, also spoken in the Santal Parganas which adjoin some of the Bengal districts. It is on account of this geographical spread over of the Mundari family of speech that a large number of words from Bengali, Hindi and Sanskrit have crept into the fabric of the Mundari language. A lot of painstaking efforts have gone in coming the English equivalents of the tribal Mundari language. Despite a lot of transformation in the tribal world of the Mundas, there appears to be no depreciation in the value and relevance of his master dictionary for the anthropologists, linguists and administrators engaged in the onerous task of tribal studies.Printed Pages: 244. 106038

From Autonomy To Independence: The United States, Pakistan and Emergence of Bangladesh
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789325980426; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The emergence of Bangladesh in 1971 after a nine-month long liberation war against Pakistani forces was the culmination of a long-standing movement for provincial autonomy by the people of East Bengal that had started almost immediately after the creation of Pakistan in 1947. East Bengals sense of deprivation was the raison dtre of this movement. Bengali demands for autonomy coincided with the establishment of closer US-Pakistan relations in the early 1950s and American activities in the subcontinent had considerable bearing on the trajectory this movement followed.From Autonomy to Independence underscores the point that American policymakers, while aware of East Pakistans dissatisfaction with West Pakistan-based central ruling elite, were influenced by Pakistan governments propaganda that portrayed Bengali autonomy movement as Communist-inspired, petrified as they were of growing Soviet influence in the region. They thus viewed Bengali autonomy movement with certain disdain and suspicion, identifying US interests with a strong central government dominated by pro-American ruling elites.This book argues that American policy proved detrimental to the growth of democracy in Pakistan as well as the cause of East Bengals autonomy, for Bengali aspirations could be fulfilled only in a democratic system of government. It traces the fascinating journey of East Bengal emerging as an independent nation of Bangladesh despite Washingtons continued support for the ruling oligarchy in Pakistan.Printed Pages: 344. 104978

17521 Mahomed Kasim Ferishta; Translated from the Original Persian By John Briggs
History of the Rise of Mahomedan Power in India till the Year A.D. 1612, 4 Vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1981; 8170691222; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Mahomed Kasim Shah Ferishta, a Persian historian was born at Astrabad on the borders of Caspian Sea in 1570 AD. He came to Bijapur in 1589 and spent remainder of his life under the immediate protection of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, who commissioned him to write the general history of the Mahomedans in India. Ferishta presented the first draft of his history to Ibrahim Adil Shah in 1606 AD and spent the rest of his life in revising it. In the introduction of his work he gave a summary of the Mahomedan Conquest, and also of the Arab conquest of the Indian Borderlands, Ferishta is reputed as one of the most trustworthy of oriental historians. His work has come to be regarded as a classic and still maintains a high place as an authority. The author, Ferishta is more divested to the feel of massacres of the defenceless Hindus than any other author of his own religious creed. Ferishta has brought more brightness to the general history of the Mahomedans in India. The date of his death is altogether unknown. Briggs supposes that it occurred in 1612 AD making him only forty one years of age. Printed Pages: 1588. 032973

Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125038337; Hardcover; New; New;
Based on intensive fieldwork in a central prison in Kolkata, this book succinctly addresses issues in the sociology of institutions and organisations. It demystifies the image of the prison as an presenting a close understanding of lives and practices within its four walls. The book finds answers to such questions as: Is the prison a negative space? Does meaningful life cease to exist in a prison? Are there aspects of life of which prisoners are unable to make sense? What does the construction of meaningful worlds mean for organisational practice and goals? How do everyday life, organisational practice and goals interact, and what are the implications of this interaction for the nature of the organisation and the quality of prison life? The author thus constructs the prison as a space where inmates make meaningful social worlds that emerge out of despair.Printed Pages: 354. 101782

Limits of Islamism: Jamaat-e-Islami in Contemporary India and Bangladesh
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2015; 1107080266; Hardcover; New; New;
This book focuses on Islamism as a political ideology by taking up the case of Jamaat-e-Islami in contemporary India and Bangladesh. It probes at whether Islamism can articulate a politics of alternative in a world marked by capitalist globalization and neoliberal consensus; what happens to the promise and goal of Islamism in providing an alternative to capitalism after the failure of twentieth-century socialism; and if a religious ideology like Islamism can represent a politics of social transformation or can it only limit itself as a peculiar politics of resistance and critique to neoliberal capitalism. This book addresses how in a contemporary globalized world Islamists construct an antagonistic frontier and try to mobilize people behind the political project of Islamism. It deals with the Islamist critique of neoliberal economic policies and ?western cultural globalization?. Further it analyzes why Islamists are opposed to such issues as atheism blasphemy and sexual freedom. Finally it traces the contemporary crisis of Islamist populism in providing an alternative to neoliberalism.Printed Pages: 358. 101450

Chronicler of the Undead
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789385152498; Softcover; New;
When there were still people around to talk to, I would introduce myself as a drinker with a writing problem. It sounded witty at the time, and certainly got a smile once in a while from the ladies. None of that matters now. There are no people left to read my books, and nobody left to listen to my attempts at wit.Now it’s just me and my notebook, sitting in my house on the hill, watching the undead rampage through what we humans once called our world. I sometimes wonder why I still live when those much younger, stronger, smarter and fitter than me perished. Maybe it’s just dumb luck. But maybe I am being left alive for a purpose. Nobody may have cared much for my novel, but maybe this is what I was meant to write. Maybe this is what I was meant to be.The chronicler of the undead.This is my story. 109726

Human Nature and Human Development
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789351282228; Hardcover; New; New;
The book looks at different perspectives by different disciplines like Biology, Psychology and Philosophy for answers to the questions that have intrigued us: where are we, what are we, why are we here. How is the nature of the human being depicted by different disciplines and different philosophical explorations? Why is it important to know this? It is for a way to live our lives that enhances our own development. Drawing from Buddhist views, it comes to the conclusion that we have to recognise our connections to the rest of the species, our connections to the world and to the cosmos, treat all beings and each other with love and compassion and nurture the earth that sustains us. Gender Justice, Citizenship and Development
Zubaan in association with IDRC; New Delhi, India; 978818988431X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Although there have been notable gains for women globally in the last few decades, gender inequality and gender-based inequities continue to impinge upon girls' and women's ability to relaize their rights and their full potential as citizens and equal partners. In fact for every right that has been established, there are millions of women who do not enjoy it. In this book, studies from Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, are prefaced by an introductory chapter that links current thinking on gender justice to debates on citizenship, entitlements, and law and development. A concluding chapter situates the discussion of gender justice, citizenship and entitlements in current development debates on poverty alleviation and social exclusion. The book brings together multidisciplinary perspectives from leading feminist scholars of sociology, political science and legal studies, among others, and in doing so, provides new insights for both advocacy and reserach. Time is an important factor in the performance of vedic ritual. It is very much essential that every detail in the ritual be performed at its proper time. Vedic texts abound in numerous speculations about the mystic connection of time and ritual. A detailed study of such speculations was a long felt desideratum. The present thesis is an attempt in this direction. Aspects such as duration, order, frequency, auspicious and inauspicious time, symbolic time, time in respect to microcosm and macrocosm, etc. have been dealt with in this book.Printed Pages: 322. 104106

Nuclear Energy in India's Energy Security Matrix: An Appraisal
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789382652359; Hardcover; New; New;
Energy is essential for the economic growth of a nation. Its absence or deficiency makes a nation highly vulnerable to international arms twisting as well as internal disturbances. As such, it is an important element in a nation's security matrix. India which is in the lower half of the countries as far as the energy consumption per capita is concerned. One of major reasons is the gap between the demand and the capacity of the country to supply the energy from indigenous sources. One of the important sources that hold promise in Indian context is the nuclear energy as it is clean and the resource; thorium to produce power through this route is available indigenously. However despite a well developed plan for energy conversion in place, using indigenous resources for over half a century, it is still considered only promising. Relevant questions in this regard are; whether perceived promise is realizable? If so, in what time frame and at what cost? Will it be safe keeping in view its capacity to cause wide spread devastation? Is there a need to seek technical collaboration with other countries or will it be better to go indigenous route only? How do we tackle the widening demand- supply gap during the interim? And finally is there a case for a review for the existing decision loop/energy management system? An attempt has been made in this book to address these issues. It is also expected that the concept advocated in this book for achieving energy security for India by 2030 will initiate a wider debate on the subject.Printed Pages: 334. 103232

Water: A Source for Future Conflicts
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382652069; Hardcover; New; New;
Water, air and sun light are the three most important resources for the sustenance of life on the planet earth. While human race has hardly any control on air and sun light, water from time immemorial has always been used by various kingdoms/ states/ groups of people as an important aspect of their respective security policy to exercise their influence over their adversaries through a control/ denial of common water resources. Such a conflict of interest has often led the concerned stake holders, to go for dispute resolution through an armed skirmish/ battle. It needs to be appreciated that the shortage of water affects food security and the energy security of a country. With depleting resources and increasing demands; the situation is gradually becoming extremely critical and a number of flash points for future conflicts are emerging.Printed Pages: 288. 103245

Role of Pakistan in India's Energy Security
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382652182; Softcover; New;
India's energy security concerns. It sheds light on India's energy insecurity and explores its various dimensions, its nature and extent. It examines the role that trade, foreign and security policy should play in enhancing India's energy security. It is argued that the key challenge for India is to increase economic growth while at the same time keeping energy demands low. This is especially challenging with the transition from biomass to fossil fuels, the growth of the motorized private transport and rising incomes, aspirations and changing lifestyles. The book suggests that at this time there are strong arguments to lessen India's fossil fuel dependence and it argues for a need to engage with all the key sources of this dependence to implement a process of energy change.Prinred Pages: 96. 103265

Discovering Life: A Poet Within
Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789380828466; Hardcover; New; New;
Discovering Life, a Poet Within is a beautiful flow of thoughts, observations and reflections about mystery of life by a former senior army officer. His urge to unravel this mystery, so close to our hearts, yet so distant, deepened when he ventured to share his thoughts in his first book, Seasons of Life, Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Soldier.Spurred by wide acceptance and readability of his first book, his quest continued with a renewed vigour and has now found an expression in this book. But this time in a totally new language, the preserve of the literary wizards, the forbidden domain, the artistic domain of poetry. This book is a collection of 100 poems, all on different topics, all about various facets of life, all with a subtle message and all in the first person. The author feels that, this was not done with a design, but has emerged to be so. Perhaps, instinctively.The book traces the intricate web of emotions and various facets of life like, the sublime feeling of love, misery and pain in life, the dilemma of conflicting thoughts, the nature and its cosmic manifestations, stretch of his poetic imagination to crystal gaze into this world and the world beyond, and finally the memories, what these hold for us in store. Each of these themes has been expressed beautifully in many of his poems. The Author feels that there is a poet residing within each one of us, waiting for an opportune moment or a trigger to surface.Overall, the frank and free flow of thoughts coming straight from the heart and expressed beautifully strikes a chord. There is so much to pick up from this book. Printed Pages: 240. 107246

The Asia Pacific region is a dynamic but complex area where much of the history of the 21st Century will be scripted. Although the strategic and economic importance of the region continues to grow, challenges of reconciling national interests with regional and global interests continue. Security architectures during the Cold War were based primarily on military alliances. However the need today is to base these architectures on shared values, interests and challenges. We need not only define but believe in these universal values. This book brings out this important aspect of this region and explains them briefly.Printed Pages: 186. 103237

Peace and Stability in Afghanistan: The Way Ahead
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380177205; Hardcover; New; New;
Even after almost eight years of international community's efforts in Afghanistan the instability and turbulence in Afghanistan has increased rather than abated. Not only has Afghanistan seen ever increasing levels of violence and loss of life the virus of instability and culture of violence has also spread across the Durand line with hardly any silver line on the horizon. A deadly insurgency, higher opium production, increasing civilian casualties, rampant corruption, an unstable neighborhood and an uncertain political future remain the defining features of the complex and combustible situation that obtains in Afghanistan.This book based on the seminar on peace and stability in Afghanistan and the way ahead is built around four themes of security, governance, development and examination of likely future scenarios and offering recommendations for policy and strategy choices which can be made now so as to move towards a better and brighter future for Afghanistan and in effect for rest of the international community.Printed Pages: 240. 103252

Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8174362622; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
This is the story of men under fire, of the courageous Indian soldier inspired by his officers. While war is an extension of the politics of a nation, it ultimately fall to the lot of the soldier to face combat on the ground. Schooled in the culture of "Service before Self", soldiers of the Indian Army take their challenges head-on, turning adversity into opportunity, overcoming impossible situations with a smile. While some of their deeds of valour are rewarded, many more need to be remembered. What makes these men the way they are? This book helps us understand better the Indian soldier and his degree of commitment to the Indian Army, and to the nation that he serves. -Thirty years after the 1971 Indo-Pak war: Pak Brigadier confesses to Arun Khetarpal's father. The Brigadier had shot his son. I have something to tell you and it concerns your son. Arun Khetarpal is a national hero... the youngest recipient of Param Vir Chakra and you and I have become very close friends. But on that fateful day, at the battle of Bade Pind, we were soldiers unknown to each other, fighting for the safety and honour of our respective countries. I regret to have to tell you that your son died at my hands. Arun's courage on the battlefield was exemplary and he moved his tank with fearless courage and daring, totally unconcerned about his own safety. Tank casualties on both sides were very heavy, till finally it was just the two of us who faced each other. We both fired simultaneously... it was destined that I was to live and he had to die. Higher Than Everest: Memoirs of a Mountaineer
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789385285264; Hardcover; New; New;
This is the inspiring true story of one of India's most iconic mountaineers - Major HPS Ahluwalia, who was the member of India's first successful expedition to Everest. But the story does not end with this spectacular achievement. In fact this is where the real story begins - for the struggle to climb Everest was but a preparation for an even bigger challenge that lay ahead.Just four months after his success, Major Ahluwalia suffered a grievous spinal injury in the Indo-Pak war of 1965. In a man of lesser courage, this could have destroyed his spirit but in Major Ahluwalia's case, it ignited a deep passion.This is the story of how he fought 'the impossible fight' towards rehabilitation and how he achieved the 'seemingly unattainable dream' of building India's first world class Spinal Injuries Centre.This is ultimately the story of how Major Ahluwalia conquered a Summit even higher than the Everest, the Summit of the Mind. The Penguin Swami Vivekananda Reader
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0143032542; First Edition; Paperback; New;
On 11 September 1893, Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) made his first public appearance on the world stage as a last-minute, uninvited participant at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. There he proclaimed his message of tolerance and universal acceptance in the ‘name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects’. Speaking against sectarianism and bigotry, this young speaker in flaming robes sounded the death-knell of all fanaticism. In his brief life of less than forty years, Swami Vivekananda wrote four outstanding treatises on Hindu philosophy: Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga and Raja Yoga. He also taught, lectured and travelled tirelessly. After his death, his message spread all over India and in many parts of the world through the various activities, efforts and services of the Ramakrishna Mission and Math, the monastic order that he had founded in the name of his guru. The Penguin Swami Vivekananda Reader is the first major compilation of Vivekananda’s selected works aimed at a general audience. It includes speeches, essays, letters, poems, conversations and excerpts from his books on subjects that have contemporary relevance: celebration of the Indian spirit, karma, spirituality, reincarnation, realization of the Absolute. Swami Vivekananda’s writings do not merely inspire, but propel action. With a detailed biography and a scholarly introduction, the Reader provides a rare insight into one of India’s greatest minds. The Ramayana of Valmiki: translated into English
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8121500931; Tenth Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Makhan Lal Sen's The Ramayana of Valmiki is a modernized version in English prose of the great Sanskrit epic Ramayana. The appeal and freshness of epic poems transcend all limitations imposed by time, space, age, caste, creed, society and language. All, irrespective of their age, succumb to the charms and fascinating personalities of its heroes, who have inspired countless men of different generations and spurred them on to perform almost superhuman task. Modern civilization owes most of dazzling achievements to such inspiration. Valmiki's Ramayana is something more than an epic. No one has built shrines in honour of Horner's heroes, to worship them as God. In contrast, from the time of its composition to this day, Valmiki's hero never lacked devotees. The reason for this strange phenomenon lies in this: in the Greek epics the cause is ambition, and the effect is the valour of its heroes; in Ramayana the cause is the moral welfare of society and the effect is the ideal conduct of its heroes under the most trying circumstances that destiny can weave. Rama is a personification of all that is expected of an ideal son, ideal brother, ideal husband, ideal prince, ideal ally, ideal commander and an ideal king. Translation of epics and rendering them in prose, is, at the best of times, an hazardous and arduous job. Here the translator has done his best to capture to a remarkable degree the grandeur of the epic, the loftiness of its thought, the simplicity and elegance of its enduring beauty. This book, being one of those rare ones which elevates one's soul, should find a place under every roof. Printed Pages: 624. 017710

The Famine of 1896-1897 in Bengal: Availability or Entitlement Crisis?
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8125023895; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 22 Cm
This book is a focussed treatment of a famine both as an 'event' and a 'process'. It is a close-up of a peasant economy in the throes of a crisis which temporarily eroded the value-system determining the normal pattern of entitlements. An investigation of the socio-economic, ecological and cultural determinants of the famine helps evolve a coherent framework. The emphasis is on the distinctive problems of the various economic regions, most notably the tribal belts. Chakrabarti applies Amartya Sen's theory of exchange entitlements to a nineteenth century famine situation in Bengal, and finds that a market-based entitlement failure precipitating severe famine conditions, "even without receiving any impulse from food production", has little relevance here. Though teh book underlines the predicament of the subalterns, the famine is not seen from the viewpoint of any specific group or community. The focus is, rather, on the phenomenon of famine in its totality---on the agony and trauma of a peasant society thrown out of gear in an abnormal situation, and the crisis of identities that ensued.
