Learning from Children What to Teach Them
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0761936114; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This enriching book explores quality education at the grassroots level for disadvantaged children. It evolves and evaluates strategies for the promotion of the overall development of children in the motor, cognitive, language, emotional, social and moral domains. The methods used revolve around children, with a larger purpose of shaping young minds as opposed to solely enhancing academic skills. The essence of the book lies in what adults can learn from children while teaching them. Though the book stems from case studies of schools in rural Karnataka, it has implications for effectively providing quality education to children across the nation. It quantitatively evaluates the process of intervention that consists of 20-25 hours of group work with the school children and qualitatively describes the outcome in terms of promotion of psycho-social development. Memories of Belonging: Images from the Colony and Beyond
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098590; Hardcover; New; New;
Memories of Belonging can be read as a collection of slightly offbeat musings on certain aspects of over a century and a half of this country’s history. Whether the photograph, lithograph, painting or cartoon is the focus or illustrates a point or an argument, the visual is integral to each piece. A rough historical sense divides the volume into three sections: the first sets the stage for the appearance of the colonial state – not through the usual tropes of political and economic domination but more with vignettes about institutions, people and unusual choices. The second section is a whimsical journey through India while the final section is all about modes of travel used by a century and a half of people on the move, beginning with the palki and ending with experiences of the railways. Through its easy style, well-chosen visuals and details peppered with anecdotes, the reader will quickly journey through colonial India into its more recent past, garnering interesting and often little-known facts and snippets along the way.Printed Pages: 228 with 90 colour photographs. 106577

The Trial of the Templars
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2006; 0521856396; Second Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
The Templars fought against Islam in the crusader east for nearly two centuries. During that time the original small band grew into a formidable army, backed by an extensive network of preceptories in the Latin West. In October 1307, the members of this seemingly invulnerable and respected Order were arrested on the orders of Philip IV, King of France and charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality and idol worship. The ensuing proceedings lasted for almost five years and culminated in the suppression of the Order. The motivations of the participants and the long-term repercussions of the trial have been the subject of intense and unresolved controversy, which still has resonances in our own time. In this new edition of his classic account, Malcolm Barber discusses the trial in the context of new work on the crusades, heresy, the papacy and the French monarchy. • The story of the Templars is one of the most dramatic, the best known but the most mythologised stories of the Middle Ages • This is the most in-depth and authoritative treatment of their trial ever written • In this definitive new edition the trial is discussed in the context of new work on the crusades, heresy, the papacy and the French monarchy Contents Preface; Introduction; 1. The participants; 2. The arrests; 3. The papal intervention; 4. The papal and episcopal inquiries; 5. The defence of the Order; 6. The end of resistance; 7. The charges; 8. The trial in other countries; 9. The suppression; 10. Conclusion; Notes; Chronology of the trial; Recent historiography on the dissolution of the Temple; Bibliography; Index. The Trial of Templars (The New Cambridge History of India)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1993; 0521457270; Paperback; New;
On 18 March 1314, Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Templars, was burned at the stake. For almost two centuries, the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV’s officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controversies which continued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber’s fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial. Contents Preface; Introduction; 1. The participants; 2. The arrests; 3. The papal intervention; 4. The papal and episcopal inquiries; 5. The defence of the Order; 6. The end of resistance; 7. The charges; 8. The trial in other countries; 9. The suppression; 10. Conclusion; Appendix A: The articles of accusation, 12 August 1308; Appendix B: An orthodox reception: the description of Gérard de Caux, 12 January 1311; Chronology of the trial; Notes; Bibliography; Index. Recent Researches in Sanskrit Computational Linguistics: Fifth International Symposium IIT Mumbai, India, January 2013 Proceedings
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606986; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
This volume is the proceedings of the 5th International Sanskrit Computational Linguistics Symposium (ISCLS), held at IIT Bombay during 4-6 January 2013. These proceedings include fourteen selected and three invited papers. The selected papers deal with topics such as computational modelling of Panini's grammar — Ashtadhyayi — together with its supplementary texts, computational tools for Sanskrit language and their applications in the traditional Sanskrit concerns. Accordingly, this book delves upon how clues from Ashtadhyayi help in identifying compound types; how Ashtadhyayi’s digital edition can be structured and implemented; the completeness analysis of a Sanskrit reader; graph-based analysis of parallel passages; some relation-specific issues in parsing Sanskrit texts, text normalizer for Sanskrit; extended Nyaya-Vaisheshika ontology; and a search engine for Sanskrit, among others. The invited papers focus on lexicography, with special reference to Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Sanskrit on Historical Principles; some aspects of semantics in early India in understanding the meaning of words; and the computational database of Panini’s grammar. This collection, thus, is an important initiative in the filed of Sanskrit computational linguistics as it records insightful current trends in the field, making it a “must buy” for students, researchers, and all those interested in Sanskrit grammar.Printed Pages: 334. 100488

The Making of Southern Karnataka: Society, Polity and Culture in the Early Medieval Period, AD 400-1030
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8125029125; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Southern Karnataka emerged as a regional entity between the fourth and eleventh centuries AD. Although interest in the nature of early medieval states and their social formations has defined much historical research since the 1970s, studies have, until now, been limited to clarifying only the political-dynastic history of the region. In this path-breaking new study, Malini Adiga reveals the political, social and cultural features that characterised the region. Its distinct identity is explored by examining the processes that created this political and cultural entity: the various social strata, the nature of the socio-political structure, the developments in the field of religion, and the manner in which the early medieval state patronised and utilised the various religious cults and sects to legitimise itself. Based on an extensive analysis of the inscriptions from the region and period under study, this book also drwas on the region's literary sources to explain its characteristic social ethos. Exhaustively researched, carefully analysed and richly descriptive, this book is essential reading for all those interested in early medieval Karnataka. Printed Pages: 464. 031542

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1980; 812150208X; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
This book deals with the unwritten rules of Nepalese religious art as laid down in 'model books'; manuals for the artists, in which they can find the correct way to represent, in visual art, any of some 2000 godly figures. The author has traced the development in time of some 150 popular Hindu deities in order to see if the representation of these gods is in any way related to changes in society. The author has studied the sketches in numerous model books and compared them with written iconographic descriptions in ancient texts as well as with executed art such as paintings, woodcarvings and miniatures. The main area of her study was the town of Bhaktapur. Printed Pages: 218 with 54 b/w illustrations. 026367

Tibetan Refugees in India: Education, Culture and Growing Up in Exile
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125054979; Hardcover; New; New;
Tibetan Refugees in India focuses on the issue of education for the Tibetan community as an important ingredient conceived to not only protect and preserve tradition but also engage with modernity by the Tibetan Government in Exile. The volume recognises the dilemmas that the community grapples with in trying to achieve a balance between ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ in education and the strategies it has employed to deal with the issue. Life in exile is seen as a continuous learning experience for the community with trying to be ‘exclusive’ yet also to prevent ‘exclusion’ in a modernised world.The Introduction sets the tone with the idea of and about refugeeism as a complex and problematic global reality. The chapters examine the educational options available to the Tibetan youth—Tibetan schools and Indian schools respectively. It details the curriculum and pedagogy in both sets of schools and the impact it has on the Tibetan youth, their sense of identity, nationhood, Tibet in their imagination and their attitude towards the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan struggle.Printed Pages: 328. 101759

100 questions from my child
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174366865; Hardcover; New; New;
In this touching book, Mallika Chopra explores 100 questions children ask - sometimes whimsical, often mystical - and shares insights on how you can craft your answers in a way that will foster a child's imagination, creativity and sense of self. Chopra writes: 'As a mom, I realized early on that my children were looking to me for answers. Even before they could speak, they were asking questions - questions about how to interact with the world. And it was my reaction to these questions that began to shape their worldview, their sense of security and trust. Chopra teaches us that each question a child asks presents a chance to change the future. With warmth and wisdom, she shares her own quest to answer her children's questions with lessons that last a lifetime.'In our rush-rush world, it's sometimes hard to slow down and match the pace and the natural, wide-eyed wonder of our kids. Chopra shows the harried parent how much power rests in those small moments, and how parents can turn each one into an opportunity to teach empathy, understanding, and spiritual growth.' Battleground India Prognosis of Hindu-Muslim Exclusivism
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380828497; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Battleground India: Prognosis of Hindu-Muslim Exclusivism is an interpretive study of the historical spectrum of India from 10 ' ' ' Century to the present period. This period witnessed rise and collapse of Muslim politico-military powers in India and gradual sprouting of Hindu nationalism and later germination of Muslim nationalism. Hindu aspirations to assert nationalism, cultural and religious identity, and achieve self-rule; and Muslim endeavour to assert separate identity as a distinct linguistic, cultural and religious and political entity; have been projected. Initial Hindu reaction to treat the British as deliverer and Muslim attitude of aversion led to disproportionate growth of Hindu and Muslim fortunes. The book interprets how the Ashraf Muslims and British connived to thwart the Hindu nationalists and perpetuated the Two Nation concept on the basis of religion, which finally fruited in dividing the people irreconcilably. The evolution of Muslim separatism since 1857 has been scientifically studied and discussed. Growth of Hindu majoritrainism and assertion of identity has also been chronicled. The aspect of 'living together separately ' psychology persisted even after Independence. The Indian Muslims continued to carry the burden of minority identity crisis. The ambience of exclusivism continued unabated. Alleged minorityism practised by the state and Muslim clamour for better share has generated sharp Hindu reaction. Battleground India has examined all these aspects both at macro and micro levels. The first unbiased projection of the deteriorating grassroots conflict situation prognosticates bad news for national unity and integrity.Printed Pages: 504. 104547

The Language of Harappans
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170173256; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Since the formulation of Indo-European theory in the 19th c., Sanskrit has been considered the language brought over by the Aryas. This raised the question after the discovery of the Harappan culture: what was the language of the Harappans? This book tries to answer this question. Since the 19th c. Sanskrit has been considered the language of the Aryas. This book questions this formulation and after critically reviewing the evidence of the Indo-Europeanists offers an alternative, viz. that Akkadian, as the language of the Asuras, the original inhabitants of the land, is the parent of Vedic and classical Sanskrit. On Love and Friendship in the Indian Context and Sigmund Freud
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608229; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book studies the constitutive role of friendship as a factor contributing to the environment required for serious discussion between accountable adults to take place. The context for this study is a vision that identifies an anti-hierarchical imagination as a prerequisite for democracy and seeks to fashion an institutional format based on friendship, outside patriarchy. This India-focused study, which draws on philosophy, literary/historical analysis, psychological theory and fieldwork, revolves around the insight that exchanging feelings and thoughts with friends, in the light-hearted style of open conversations but with the seriousness that only informality can underwrite, is a uniquely valuable mode of exploring questions; it alone nurtures the growth of personal accountability. The capabilities of this mode as a site for the development of such maturity, the author suggests, go beyond what the institutional structures of academia and other public spaces can possibly support, given the masks that formal structures force on their participants. The author argues that friendship is a metaproject, a crucible within which projects are incubated; this structural fact makes it difficult to initiate friendships if one is a very young child, not yet able to understand what projects are, or a very old adult, no longer willing to launch any. It is in the context of that argument that the author considers the Freudian view that all acts of friendship are nothing but sublimated manifestations of eros; she suggests that such a claim conflates issues of origin with issues of validity and ignores the metaproject character of friendship bonds.Printed Pages: 149. 100539

One of the most valuable and extensive texts on music and dance from eastern India, the Sa?gitanaraya?a consists of four chapters, the first on vocal music (gitanir?aya), the second on instrumental music ( vadyanir?aya), the third on dance and dramatic art (na?yanir?aya), and the fourth chapter that provides examples of musical compositions (suddhaprabandhodhara?a).Altogether fifteen manuscripts of the text are known to exist, some full and some fragmentary. An edition of the text comprising all the four chapters was published first by Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1966 under the joint editorship of Pandit Vanambaracarya, Kavichandra Kalicharan Patnaik and Shri Kedarnath Mahapatra. A more recent edition of the three musicological chapters was accomplished in 1987 by Jonathan Katz at Oxford but remains yet unpublished. Constitutionalism and Democracy in South Asia: Political Developments in India’s Neighbourhood
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198098634; Hardcover; New; New;
South Asian countries have experienced much struggle and widespread political changes since 2008. While Bhutan made the transition from monarchy to constitutional democracy, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Myanmar moved from praetorian to civilian regimes. Monarchy came to an end in Nepal and Maldives became a presidential republic even as Afghanistan, India, and Sri Lanka witnessed their democracies at crossroads. Did such political events of great magnitude change only political dispensations in these countries? Or did they actually inspire new political discourse and create a new vision among the political class? This volume posits the vital question on constitutionalism and democratic development against a brief historical backof each country in the region. Timely, authoritative, and analytical, it is a major scholarly addition to the polity of South Asia. Printed Pages: 232. 108781
