1701 Ananda K. Coomaraswamy
Jaina Art
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8121505399; First Indian Edition; Cloth; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
The present text contributes to our knowledge and understanding of the Jaina paintings and minor arts which are of great interest as being the oldest known Indian paintings on paper. In order to make them fully comprehensible the author first describes and illustrates the actual paintings by a short account to Jainism and of the legends of Mahavira and kalakacarya, which are main subject of the pictures. Beginning with a short account of Jainism, the author depicts the life of Mahavira and other Tirthankaras based on Kalpa Sutra in the first three chapters. Chapter four describes the faithful dealings of the holy monk Kallika with the wicked king Gardabhilla. Chapter five gives in detail the explanation of various terms used in the painting. Chapter six studies the whole cosmos according to the Jainas. The author is very clear in his mind about the artist's creation of aesthetic excellence, described in chapter seven. Chapters eight and nine account for the reproduction given in figures which have been taken from the pages of the Jaina MSS. Abbreviated reference is made in the descriptions facing the plates. Author's cogent and remarkably well-documented writings reveal the masterly pen recording the thought of a great master born to interpret Indian art for all time. The Origin of the Buddha Image
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121502225; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Ananda K. Coomaraswamy's The Origin of the Buddha Image is a detailed study and analysis of the controversial problem. In the present monograph, with his usual acumen and deep understanding of the subject, Coomaraswamy has laid bare the facts which clearly show that the Buddha image was a product of the Indian mind. In this detailed excurses, he was discussed the problem not only with a view to prove that the Buddha image originated out of the pre-existing Indian forms, but has also taken pains to disprove the theories of those scholars with whom "Indo-Greek art has become a veritable obsession." Coomaraswamy has divided the work into the following heads: (1) What is the Buddha image?,(2) The early representation of deities by means of symbols, (3) The necessity for a Buddha image, (4) Elements of the later anthropomorphic iconography already present in early Indian art, (5) Style and content: differentiation of Indian and Hellenistic types, and (6) Dating of Gandhara and Mathura Buddhas. According to Coomaraswamy, every element essential to the iconography of Buddha and Bodhisattva figures appears in early Indian art before the Buddha figure of Gandhara or Mathura is known. For this, he says we have only to look at a sequence of examples beginning with the Parkham image and culminating in the Mathura types of the Gupta period to realize that there is no room at any point in the intercalation of any model based on the Hellenistic tradition: He has even suggested that the Gandhara iconography itself is derived from the pre-existing Indian forms, either through Mathura or otherwise.Printed Pages: 60 with 73 half-tone illustrations. 039763

Vidyapati Padavali
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Clarion Books; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8185120501; Hardcover; New; New;
Vidyapati ?hakur, one of the most renowned medieval Maithili poets, composed the wreath of songs, the theme of which is the same as that of Gitagovinda the courtship of God and the soul, under the names of Radha and K???a. The story of love told in the poems is an allegorical representation of the yearning of the human soul for the Divine.The poetry of Vidyapati arrested Coomaraswamy's attention for translation, although translation was otherwise least of his callings. Perhaps he felt the need to convey through the English language the multi-layered symbolism of these seemingly simple verses revolving round the loves of Radha and Krisna.Printed Pages: 360. 101630

Essays on Music
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Manohar Publishers & Distributors; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8173046115; Hardcover; New; New;
These essays were published in a few books, journals, etc., mostly in the early years of the twentieth century. Coomaraswamy held that music in countless ways had been bound up with the Indian national culture, for it was the most universal expression of emotion-religious, amorous or martial. Music belonged to every part of life. The flute of K???a, the vi?a of Sarasvati, the dance of Siva, the Gayatri as cosmic chant or music of the spheres; the hymns of passionate adoration of the southern Saivite, all these belong to the association of music and religion.In addition to the art of music, Coomarasway lays great emphasis on the folk songs of agriculture and crafts. This music is serving to lighten heavy labour, such as the songs of husbandmen, carters and boatmen. Music remained too intimately associated with religion, with drama and with life, whether courtly or popular and was faithfully guarded by tradition.Coomaraswamy was much against the harmonium and gramophone, when compared to stringed instruments; even the piano, he held, was an inferior instrument. Every time these mechanical instruments were used in place of man, the Indian musician was degraded, his living was taken from him and the group soul of Indian life injured. Among musical instruments, he gave pride of place to the vina.Printed Pages: 153. 101632

Essays on Jaina Art
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Manohar Publishers & Distributors; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8173045348; Hardcover; New; New;
His writings on Jaina art span the entire period of his active working life as an art historian. He published his first article on the subject in 1914 and ended with a book review in 1943, four years before his death. Jaina art and its symbolic inventory held a special place in Coomaraswamy's formulation of the history of Indian painting, indeed Indian civilization itself. He was the first to recognize its chronological place in the succession of style. The Jaina paintings are not only important for the student of Jaina iconography and archaeology which are illustrative of costumes, manners and customs, but are of greater interest because they are the oldest Indian paintings on paper, representing an almost unknown school of lndian artHolding the view that in order to make these paintings fully comprehensible, a short account of Jainism and of the legends of Mahavira and Kalakacarya, which are the main subject of the paintings is given in this volume. The chapters that follow deal with the explanation of various terms; Jaina cosmology; aesthetics and relationships of Jaina painting; the illustrated Jaina manuscripts; description of the figures; followed by a large number of illustrations.Printed Pages: 110. 101629

The Living Thoughts of Gotama the Buddha
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121501679; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
The two most remarkable facts about Buddhism are: it has almost ceased to exist in India-the land of its birth, while claiming about 255 million adherents in other parts of Asia; its founder Siddhartha, more well-known as Gautama Buddha, paid no importance to ceremonies and rituals, did not say a word on the supremacy of one God, yet people flocked to him and became his disciple. Even today its popularity is on the increase. What exactly is this ageless and timeless appeal of Buddhism? A.K. Coomaraswamy and I.B. Horner have given the answer in this book-The Living Thoughts of Gotama the Buddha. Commencing with the life sketch of the great teacher, they take up every aspect of his teaching for clear elucidation. All students of religion, especially those interested in Buddhist studies, shall find this book extremely useful. Printed Pages: 235. 001041

Theatres of India is an accessible and authoritative guide to Indian theatre across its history of over 2000 years. Edited by Ananda Lal, one of India’s leading theatre scholars, as a spin-off of the much acclaimed The Oxford Companion to Indian Theatre, this volume includes more than 80 photographs and line drawings that effectively showcase the ‘visual-ness’ of India’s theatrical forms. Ways of Truth: A View of Hindu Tradition
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8124604398; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
In India, there has long been a tendency to emphasize the spoken word which is passed on alive from an individual teacher to each individual student. But, through the development of modern media, more use is now made of the written word which records information externally, in institutions that have been industrially, socially and culturally organized. How then can we understand the Hindu tradition as alive today with its ancient emphasis upon the spoken word and the living individual? That is the question which this book investigates. Accordingly, it asks for a broader understanding of history, which would allow for a rightful accounting of the Vedas and of other oral learning. Through its continued emphasis upon the living word, the Hindu tradition asks for a deeper understanding of reasoned enquiry. Such reasons do not work primarily through mechanical instruments in the restricted way that modern physics does. Instead, it works essentially through a reflective investigation of our living faculties, which are thus cultivated and clarified. The goal of truth is not here sought through an institutional consensus; but rather as a common ground, which is approached quite differently through different personalities and institutions of culture. Interpreting the Upanishads
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8188071528; Softcover; New;
Must the Upanishads be ‘difficult’? Actually, they are rather plain and direct. They do not construct any complex system of ideas and beliefs. Nor do they build up any elaborate picture of the world. Instead, in some what brief and uncompromising language, they ask what is plainly and simply true: beneath all the complications of our uncertain beliefs.This sceptical questioning was their traditional difficulty. It went against the habits of faith and obedience upon which traditional society depended. As a result, the Upanishads were kept traditionally secret and inaccessible. They were hidden behind a forbidding reputation: as teaching an esoteric and mystical doctrine, to be kept away from all but a few special initiates.Today, with our modern freedom of thought, we have learned to be more open about questioning things that are usually taken for granted. In particular, we can be more open about the kind of radical questions that the Upanishads ask.That is the idea of this book. To help open up the Upanishads and their radical questioning, for ordinary people. Printed Pages: 208. 111638

Global Bollywood
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 97801956999487; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Bollywood is one of the most prolific film industries in the world. Based in Mumbai, the industry churns out hundreds of films each year—primarily melodramatic films with music and elaborately choreographed dance routines. Bollywood’s popularity is quickly spreading across the globe, and, beyond the films themselves, Bollywood has made its way into global popular culture. Global Bollywood brings together leading scholars to examine the transnational and transmedia terrain of Bollywood. Defining Bollywood as an arena of public culture distinct from Hindi-language Bombay cinema, this volume offers a new critical framework for analyzing the institutional, cultural, and political dimensions of Bollywood films and film music as they begin to constitute an important circuit of global flows in the twenty-first century. Organized thematically, the book examines contestations surrounding the term Bollywood, changing relations between the state and the film industry, convergence with television and new media, online fan culture, film journalism, and the reception and negotiations of gender and sexuality in diverse socio-cultural contexts. 026190

The Modern Prince and the Modern Sage: Transforming Power and Freedom
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178298279; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Ever since the Renaissance in the thirteenth century, the ‘prince’ has been the dominant archetype of ‘being’ and ‘becoming’. Power and politics have provided the modern world with determinant frames of self-constitution and social emancipation, along with a singular definition of ‘freedom’. In this context, The Modern Prince and the Modern Sage: Transforming Power and Freedom is concerned with rethinking and transforming the concepts of ‘power’ and ‘freedom’ in discourse, society and history. This book draws from various sources—traditions of wisdom, creative experiments in socio-political theorizing and spiritual mobilizations—and brings together voices of struggle and movements for creative transformations from around the world. It addresses epochal issues of our times such as responsibility and shared sovereignties and appeals to a wide readership in humanities and social sciences and would be of interest to all seeking souls and movements. It will also be an invaluable reading resource for students and researchers of social and political theory, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, development studies, cultural studies and religious studies. Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8187967021; Softcover; New;
Since the beginning of humanity, fables and stories have been the means of imparting instruction and amusement to man. The stories were designed to illustrate and exemplify precepts for human conduct. After centuries, these stories eventually found themselves in print. They are divided into four groups: Sanskrit or Hindoo, Arabic or Persian, Western or European and the American. Of these, the Sanskrit or Hindoo group of stories are the oldest and probably served as the basis of Arabic or Persian tales, which again served as the source for many European story-tellers.Printed Pages: 158. 102070

Sociology: Essays on Approach & Methodology (Second Edition)
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0195698843; Second Edition; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
These essays reflect André Béteille’s central concerns as a teacher and scholar of sociology. They examine the nature and scope of the discipline including its distinctive conception as an intellectual pursuit and its relation to associated fields of anthropology, economics and political science. The substantially revised second edition re-emphasizes the author’s standpoint that sociology as an intellectual discipline should be concerned more directly with the present than the past. In addition to his central concern of comparing societies and the social significance of tradition, Béteille engages with the ideas of sociologists like Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, N.K. Bose and M.N. Srinivas. Lucidly written, the book enhances our understanding of the social framework in which we live. Essential reading for students and researchers of sociology, anthropology, history and political science, this volume will also interest the non-specialist reader. 034002

Marxism and Class Analysis
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195686969; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
Marxism has played a crucial role directly and indirectly in the development of social analysis in India. This collection of essays by Andre Beteille addresses the contemporary significance of Marxism in the study of society, polity, and economy. The problems of inequality, class, and conflict in India are discussed with special reference to its agrarian social structure. Marxism has often been identified with what is described as the class approach to society. While recognizing the historical and contemporary relevance of class, the essays in the substantive part of the book deal with other sources of inequality and conflict, and their relationship with class. The analysis also brings out the diverse and changing meanings of class within the Marxist tradition itself. It presents accounts of inequality and conflict at various levels of society: village, district, and region. It also provides an overview of the changes that have taken place in the concept of and approaches to the study of class since the time of Marx. 019711

Krsna in the Harivamsa (Vol. I: The Wonderful Plays of a Cosmic Child)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608245; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Written over a thirty-year period, the thirteen texts of this book — some of which have been updated, others translated from the original French — address various aspects of Krishna’s childhood in the Harivamsha. As a part of a continuous effort to better understand this oft-neglected complement to the Mahabharata, the present book demonstrates that these stories of Krishna’s childhood were carefully composed by brahmanas who knew fully well what they were doing. During the ten or so years he spends as a herder in the forest surrounding Mathura, Krishna prepares himself to kill the evil king Kamsa: when packs of wolves spring from the hairs of his body, he manifests his destructive power; he appears as a true avatara when he dives into the Yamuna to subdue the snake Kaliya; he reveals himself as a new Brahma able to create a new world when he uplifts Mount Govardhana with which he has just identified himself, then sheltering cows and herders in his own body. It is author’s contention throughout these chapters that these episodes cannot be dismissed as a hotchpotch of legends borrowed from the Abhiras or similar pastoral tribes. Neither does one do justice to the genre when one reinterprets the story symbolically, as if it were the product of an overactive imagination. Rejecting these positions, the author instead attempts to show here how these talented storytellers carefully crafted a narrative, often using material drawn from their own Vedic tradition, in order to address the new concerns of their audiences.Printed Pages: 370. 100543

Discerning the Spirits: Theological and Ethical Hermeneutics in Paul
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521875943; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
How did Paul determine ethical and theological truth? Were all believers expected to be able to 'discern the spirits' (1 Corinthians 12.10)? This study shows that discernment must be understood against the backdrop of an extensive hermeneutic, by which Paul inherently relates ethical and theological knowledge. Understanding the will of God requires noetic and existential transformation, in short, the 'renewal of the mind' (Romans 12.2). Munzinger argues that Paul implies a process of inspiration in which the Spirit sharpens the discerning functions of the mind because the believer is liberated from a value system dominated by status and performance. The love of God enables all believers to learn to interpret reality in a transformed manner and to develop creative solutions to questions facing their communities. For Paul authentic discernment is linked to a comprehensive new sense of meaning. • Investigates Paul's understanding of ethical and theological knowledge, and how to 'discern the will of God’ • Offers insights from philosophy, psychology and sociology as well as from specialist New Testament perspectives • Relevant to pastors and lay people seeking Biblical guidance regarding difficult decisions Contents Part I. Introduction; 1. The conceptual approach; Part II. What Requires Discernment? The Objects of Evaluation: 2. The discernment of ethical questions; 3. The discernment of spirits; 4. Vac: The Concept of the Word in Selected Hindu Tantras
Sri Satguru Publications; Delhi, India; 1992; 8170303435; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 x 19 Cm
This Book is about the power of the Word. conceived as the main and most effective aspect of divine energy. It is the only systematic study in English of notions concerning the Word (Vac) as these are expounded in the shaiva tantras of Kashmir and in related texts. Padoux first describes the Vedic Origins of these notions, then their development in texts of different Tantric traditions. He shows how different levels of the Word abide in humans, how these levels are linked to the kundalini, and how they develop into articulate speech and discursive thought. He also describes how the universe is created out of the letters of the alphabet. The last two chapters explain the powers of mantras as sacred ritual utterances. These powers are described as magical as well as religious, because they can achieve supernatural results as well as lead to salvation. Their uses are linked to yogic mental and bodily practices.Printed Pages: 475. 101158

Dharma Patanjala: A Saiva Scripture from Ancient Java (Studied in the Light of Related Old Javanese and Sanskrit Texts)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8177421670; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The book presents a thoroughly revised edition, English translation, and study of the Dharma Patanjala, an Old Javanese-Sanskrit Saiva scripture transmitted through a single palm-leaf codex of West Javanese origin dating back to the 15th century AD. The cultural and doctrinal background of the text, as well as its codicological and philological aspects, are introduced in Part I. Part II presents an annotated diplomatic edition of the text with facsimile reproductions of the codex on facing pages, followed by a critical edition with English annotated translation. Part III is a systematic study focusing on the interpretation of the doctrines taught in the Dharma Patanjala in comparison with related Sanskrit texts from the Indian Sub-continent and Old Javanese scriptures from the Indonesian Archipelago. The author of the Dharma Patanjala adopted a variety of Patanjalaastangayoga instead of the Saivasadangayoga that is common in other Old Javanese texts, and attuned it to a Saiva doctrinal framework. When elaborating his hybrid system, the author followed a commentarial tradition to the Sanskrit Yogasutras that is closely related, yet not identical, to that of the Yogasutrabhasya. The Dharma Patanjala also documents an early tradition of speculative texts (Tattva), which was previously known to us only through two Old Javanese scriptures, namely the V?haspatitattva and the Tattvajnana. This important text thus fills a gap in our knowledge of Saiva theology and philosophy in pre-Islamic Indonesia, and also casts light on the origin and development of Saivism in the Indian Subcontinent. ANDREA ACRI was trained at Leiden University (PhD 2011, MA 2006) and at the University of Rome `La Sapienza' (Laurea degree, 2005). He is Maitre de Confe'rences in Tantric Studies at the EcolePratique des HautesE'tudes in Paris, France. Prior to joining EPHE he has been Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor at Nalanda University (India) in 2016 and, since 2013, Visiting Fellow at the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre, ISEAS-YusofIshak Institute (Singapore). He has spent several years in Indonesia, and held postdoctoral research fellowships in the Netherlands, Australia, the UK, and Singapore. He has received competitive grants and awards by the Arcadia Foundation/British Library, the Australian Government/Research Council, and the American Academy of Religion. His main research and teaching interests are S'aiva and Buddhist Tantric traditions, Hinduism and Indian Philosophy, Yoga traditions, Sanskrit and Old Javanese philology, and the comparative religious and intellectual history of South and Southeast Asia from the premodern to the contemporary period. Besides the Dharma Patanjala, his publications include the edited volumes Esoteric Buddhism in Mediaeval Maritime Asia (2016, ISEAS Publishing), From Lanka Eastwards (2011, KITLV Press, co-edited with Helen Creese and Arlo Griffiths), special issues of the International Journal of Hindu Studies (2013, Springer) and the Journal of Hindu Studies (2014, Oxford University Press), and several articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Tibetan Mahayogatantra: An Ethno-Historical Study of Skulls, Bones and Relics
B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8176466425; Hardcover; New; New;
Bone carving, one of the most ancient crafts of Tibet, is here treated in the context of Mahayoga Tantra. Since the first missionary reports from Tibet in the letters to Rome (17 - 18 century) the use of skulls and bones in Tibet was described as sorcery involving all sorts of magic operations, and referred in the context to head hunting practices and ancestry cults. For the first time a full and thorough ethno-historical investigation is presented, combining the study of early Indian written documents (5 - 12 cent) and Tibetan texts (11 - 20 cent) on the subject with field study and participating observation (1983-1994). The author, herself a practicing Tantrik Buddhist, relates the use of skulls and bones to rituals of the Mahayoga Tantra within Vajrayana Buddhism. On the example of five traditional ritual instruments made of human bones: Thigh bone trumpet, Damaru, Skull cup, prayer beads and bone ornaments, she explains the philosophical ground, application and aim of the technology, functions and symbolism of Tibetan `bone lore`, including relics, sacred mummies and the practice of mummification in Tibet. Spiced with autobiographical accounts this book gives a rare ethno-historical insight into the magical mysteries of Tibet. Whoever wants to know about trance-runners, skull oracles or how to fabricate a cloak of invisibility may find here the answers. Printed Pages: 253. 110348

Over the course of Tibetan history, revelations-known as Treasures (gter ma) - have been discovered hidden in nature or have emerged directly from the great minds of the Nyingma School, creating a profound and lasting effect on Tibetan religious society and culture. Tibetan Treasure Literature discusses central themes and personalities in the history and practice of Tibetan Treasure revelation. In particular, this book presents the first through survey of the revelations of the great visionary master Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa (1829-1870). Chokgyur Lingpa was a prominent member of the famed ecumenical (ris med) tradition and his revelations are widely practiced today in many schools and traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Particular emphasis is placed on his revelations of Tibetan Buddhism. Particular emphasis is placed on his revelations pertaining to the wrathful deity Vajrakilaya. Translations of selected texts are presented together with a detailed commentary on their practice composed by Khenpo Rinchen Namgyal (nineteenth century), one of Chokgyur Lingpa's foremost students. Also included is a translation of the renowned master Ju Mipham's (1846-1912) discussion of the criteria for evaluation the authenticity of those beings who claim to have revealed such Treasures of Buddhist teaching.Printed Pages: 245. 102426

Imperial Delhi: The British Capital of the Indian Empire
Prestel; Germany; 2002; 3791327887; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 Cms x 30 Cms
Designated by King George V to replace Calcutta as capital of British India, New Delhi was constructed between 1912 and 1929 under the steady eye of architect Sir Edward Lutyens who sought to bring to this British Colony a sense of classicism, order, and institutional beauty. Brimming with more than 300 color and black and white illustrations, plans and photographs, this book presents the most comprehensive examination to date of how this city was envisioned, planned and constructed. From the massive war memorial arch to the spacious gardens and the gloriously imposing Viceroy's House, the evidence of Lutyens' architectural genius is everywhere throughout New Delhi. Architectural historian Andreas Volwahsen discusses the importance of Lutyens' work and provides a fascinating account of the making of a city: the contentious debates and cultural considerations, the inspiration and the painstaking construction, and finally the ways in which New Delhi has evolved into a modern city. With the growing interest in the preservation of historic sites worldwide, this magnificently detailed yet highly accessible history is certain to become a classic in the fields of architecture and urban design. Splendours of Imperial India: British Architecture in the 18th and 19th Centuries
Prestel; Germany; 2004; 3791330454; First Edition; Hard Cover with a Slipcase; New; New; 25 Cms x 31 Cms
An illustrated survey of British colonial architecture that once dominated the landscape of the Indian subcontinent, this book tells a rich and complicated history of imperialism. One of the most revealing legacies of Britain's long history in India is the colonial architecture from the two centuries preceding the struggle for independence. Built to house both occupiers and occupied alike, these imposing buildings, including palaces, mansions, clubhouses, and government offices, represented a hybrid of Western and Eastern sensibilities as their architects sought to plant the flag of British dominance in a foreign culture. Splendours of Imperial India focuses on India's towns and cities, particularly Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, providing countless illustrations, sketches, and photographs of the many impressive buildings and ruins that dot India's coastlines, hillsides, and valleys. Andreas Volwahsen's informative commentaries highlight the considerable achievements of these magnificent structures while offering insight into the stories these buildings tell about their own and India's history. Mountainous Sound Spaces: Listening to History and Music in the Uttarakhand Himalayas
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382993322; Hardcover; New; New;
This book provides a perspective on cultural practice in the Himalayas that engages directly with the sonic world of musical production thus emphasizing how the invisible world of sound is critical to shaping imagined histories creating mythologized heroes and amplifying the stories of mountains and people. Together Garhwal and Kumaun comprise the present-day Indian state of Uttarakhand a state with unique histories associated with Hindu mythology immigrant communities from western India Gorkha conquest British colonialism and modern-day India. The book situates the reader within the history and geography of Garhwal and provides general information on a selection of instruments and sound structures. The reader is introduced to Garhwal’s aristocratic and colonial past as well as to the region’s folklore. The music of bagpipes echoes a colonial past by blending British regimental histories with contemporary folk traditions. Drum and trumpet ensembles echo the martial traditions of Rajputs and Mughals and confirm migratory histories between the mountains and the plains. Flutes echo the supernatural world of sprites and gods and become a potent symbol of dangerous love. The book also uses a variety of theoretical models to explore the ways in which music is described and explained in academic literature and mystic traditions. The nature of sound as well as its relationship to language is re-examined in the context of the Himalayas. It provides the reader with a framework for understanding how music is created and how repertoire is organized. In addition it moves the reader between the worlds of epic performance and contemporary practice giving a sense for disparate sites of musical production and performance.Printed Pages: 198. 101490
