Twelve-year-old Sarojini’s best friend, Amir, might not be her best friend any more. Ever since Amir moved out of the slum and started going to a posh private school, it seems like he and Sarojini have nothing in common. Then Sarojini finds out about the Right to Education, a law that might help her get a free seat at Amir’s school – or, better yet, convince him to come back to a new and improved version of the government school they went to together. As she struggles to keep her best friend, Sarojini gets help from some unexpected characters, including Deepti, a feisty classmate who lives at a construction site; Vimala Madam, a human rights lawyer who might also be an evil genius; and Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, a long-dead freedom fighter who becomes Sarojini’s secret pen pal. Told through letters to Mrs. Naidu, this is the story of how Sarojini learns to fight – for her friendship, her family, and her future. Printed Pages: 292. 109468

Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics: Quantum Holism to Cosmic Holism; The Physics and Metaphysics of Bohm
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8182202582; Hardcover; New; New;
Physics and philosophy inextricably intertwine in this book. Physics unravels the splendour of nature while philosophy discloses its profoundness. Physics unveils the regularity of nature through the physical laws while philosophy transcends and transforms it into a fabulous noematic vision of disclosure. The author uses a fourfold strategy in this book. In the firstfold, the life and influences of Bohm are explained so that the reader can trace his intellectual shoreline. The secondfold examines the conceptual development of the physical theory of quantum mechanics, its interpretation as Copenhagen Mechanics and the criticism of Copenhagen Mechanics. In the thirdfold, Bohmian Mechanics or the quantum holism is examined in detail. The fourthfold delves deep into the Bohmian metaphysics that is basically derived from physics and describes its salient features and its symbolic representation. A philosophical exami-nation is conducted on this holistic mythopoeic cosmology of Bohm that is extended from his quantum vision to the cosmic reality. Printed Pages: 427. 110054

Principles of Buddhist Tantra: A Discourse on Cittavisuddhi-prakarana of Aryadeva
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8121511909; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This work is a textual based discourse on the Cittavisuddhi-prakarana of Aryadeva, a seminal text which describes the principle and philosophy of Buddhist Tantra. The dispute on the question of Tantric meditative practices having any philosophical foundation or whether those practices have been introduced into the ethico-religious praxis of various religious traditions as a later introduction is a continuing discussion. In this work, it is trying to prove that the introduction of Tantra into Madhyamika philosophy is a natural development and it is proved beyond doubt by reviewing an important work in the Buddhist tradition written by Aryadeva, the Cittavisuddhi-prakarana. The unique dialectical method introduced and used by the Madhyamikas to interpret their philosophy and the conception of sunyata is the guiding principle in this regard. Mdhyamika envisages that the conception of sunyata can be interpreted as the proper understanding of the insubstantial nature of object of the world (dharma-nairatmya) and the insubstantial nature of the subjective self which perceives such objects of the world (pudgala-nairatmya). The dialectics advanced by the Madhyamika is efficient in deconstructing the substantiality of the phenomenal world of objects, but that is effectively possible only after reconstructing the notion of a substantive self using Tntric spiritual practices. The sunyata as the conception of dharma-nairatmya is achieved through reconstructing the substantive notion of the phenomenal world using dialectics, while it as the conception of pudgala-nairatmya is achieved using Tantric spiritual practices. 023363

Exploring the Structure of Emptiness - Philosophical Hermeneutics of the Text Catusstava of Nagarjuna: A Translation and Interpretation
Sanctum Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8190995014; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Nagarjuna is one of the finest philosophers who ever lived. This second century Buddhist philosopher from south India is known for his criticism on speculative theories and viewpoints. But his name is better known for introducing the idea of emptiness (sunyata), a philosophical concept that had hugely influenced the discourses of Eastern philosophy, religion, and culture for about 2000 years. Nagarjuna cleverly introduced emptiness (sunyata), into Buddhist discourses to explain its central philosophy: the philosophy of Middle Path. Through the negative mode of argumentation, he taught how we naturally get trapped into extreme viewpoints and speculate on them. His philosophy of Middle Path (Madhyamika) explains the progress of human reasoning moving in its natural course avoiding extreme viewpoints for finding harmony and freedom. During the second century, in a different milieu, Nagarjuna warned his students about the dangers of speculative thought created out of extreme viewpoints and philosophical doctrines. He taught them to look into the structures of such doctrines critically by using negation to know what the truth is. Therefore, the philosophical idea of emptiness (sunyata) is not the end of negation assuming perfect nihilism, but teaching us that it would work like medicine for removing all our ignorance. More precisely, it is like zero (sunya) in mathematics, a number with an undefined value, but real numbers find newer values by associating with it. It is a philosophical tool that helps us control our alleged fears, anger, petty hatred, etc., by invoking the natural course of human compassion (karuna) for us to live and die naturally. Therefore, the structure of emptiness is the philosophy of Middle Path. Printed Pages: 413. 037133

Feeding the Dead: Ancestor Worship in Ancient India
Oxford University Press; 2013; 0199896437; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Feeding the Dead outlines the early history of ancestor worship in South Asia, from the earliest sources available, the Vedas, up to the descriptions found in the Dharmshastra tradition. Most prior works on ancestor worship have done little to address the question of how shraddha, the paradigmatic ritual of ancestor worship up to the present day, came to be. Matthew R. Sayers argues that the development of shraddha is central to understanding the shift from Vedic to Classical Hindu modes of religious behavior. Central to this transition is the discursive construction of the role of the religious expert in mediating between the divine and the human actor. Both Hindu and Buddhist traditions draw upon popular religious practices to construct a new tradition. Sayers argues that the definition of a religious expert that informs religiosity in the Common Era is grounded in the redefinition of ancestral rites in the Grhyasutras. Beyond making more clear the much misunderstood history of ancestor worship in India, this book addressing the serious question about how and why religion in India changed so radically in the last half of the first millennium BCE. The redefinition of the role of religious expert is hugely significant for understanding that change. This book ties together the oldest ritual texts with the customs of ancestor worship that underlie and inform medieval and contemporary practice. Printed Pages: 187. 037736

Reason's Traces: Identity and Interpretation in Indian and Tibetan Buddhist Thought
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 0195668278; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The encounter between western scholarship and Buddhist philosophy has been a longstanding one. In this valuable new contribution, Matthew Kapstein asserts that if Buddhism is to emerge as a viable current in Western thought, its point of departure will have to be sustained and critical reflection upon its deals of the 'good' within our contemporary context. In a sense, therefore, Buddhist philosophy, despite its great and ancient history, remains as yet 'a project unborn'. Reasons's Traces addresses some of the key questions in the study of Indian and Tibetan Buddhist thought: the analysis of personal identity and of the ultimate reality, the interpretations of Tantric texts and traditions, and Tibetan approaches to the interpretaion of Indian sources. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Reason's Traces reflects current work in philosophical analysis and hermeneutics, inviting readers to explore the relationship between philosophy and spiritual traditions in a Buddhist c on text. Included here are new and accessible translations of original texts by the major Buddhist philosophers: Vasubandhu on personal identity, Bhavaviveka on mantras, and the last of the great Indian Buddhist masters, Abhayakaragupta, on ultimate and relative truth. Broad in its scope, the book moves from reflections on important Buddhist philosophical texts to learned speculation on Tantric rituals. A major contribution to scholarship in the field of Buddhist philosophy, this book will be read with great interest by scholars and students of philosophy, comparative religion, those undertaking Buddhist studies, and lay readers interested in knowing more about the vast world of Buddhist thought and tradition. Language History of the Kamta and Cooch Behar Region
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8175968974; Softcover; New;
The Indo – Aryan languages and dialects constitute a dialect continuum characterised by variable non – discrete boundaries between speech communities. In order to reconstruct linguistic history it is necessary to take stock of this sociolinguistic context and adjust the methods of reconstruction accordingly. This study presents a theoretically robust sociolinguistic framework for historical reconstruction which supplements a traditional comparative reconstruction of phonology and morphology. The language varieties examined in this book are known by a number of names including ‘Kamta’ ‘Rajbanshi or simply the ‘deshi bhasha’ of north Bengal and west Assam. This study provides evidence for a protolanguage termed ‘proto Kamta’ (c. AD 13 – 16 century) which was the point of common origin for these lects and defines them as a subgroup within Indo – Aryan.Printed Pages: 274. 101445

Monk Dancers of Tibet
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 2003; 1570629749; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 21 Cms x 30 Cms Matthieu Ricard
In the midst of the devastation that has been wrought on their culture, the monk dancers in the Shechen monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal, are devoted to preserving the sacred dances central to the Tantric tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The dances, which originated in India and flourished for centuries in Tibet, are teaching stories—each mask, costume, movement, and gesture has a specific significance and embodies the values of Buddhism. The dances are the monks' spiritual gift to the lay community. The origin of the sacred Buddhist dance, or cham, goes back to the ninth century, when Guru Padmasambhava introduced Buddhism to Tibet. Through the ages, the practice has been advanced by great masters whose visionary experiences enriched and enhanced the dance forms. The sacred dances were then transmitted as accurately as possible by the masters' disciples from generation to generation. The dances are now preserved in exile in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, and have been presented in the West, by the monks of Shechen and other Tibetan monasteries, in the same spirit of sharing a profound inner experience. In vivid, full-color photos and illuminating text, the well-known author and photographer Matthiew Ricard reveals the painstaking preparations for and meanings behind the dances, as well as the intriguing history of this uniquely colorful teaching practice. Building the Tatmadaw: Myanmar Armed Forces Since 1948
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502793; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Ever since Myanmar regained her independence in January 1948, the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces) has been crucial in restoring and maintaining law and order. It is one of the most important institutions in Myanmar politics. Various aspects of the Tatmadaw have been studied. The most notable area of study has been the political role of the military. This study looks at the organizational development of the Myanmar armed forces. It analyses four different aspects of the Tatmadaw: military doctrine and strategy, organization and force structure, armament and force modernization, and military training and officer education. It sets out security perceptions and policies, charting developments in each phase against the situation at the time, and also notes the contributions of the leading actors in the process. Since early 1990s, the Tatmadaw has implemented a force modernization programme. This work studies rationales and strategy behind the force modernization programme and examines the military capabilities of the Tatmadaw. Drawing extensively from archival sources and existing literature, this empirically grounded research argues that, while the internal armed security threat to the state continues to play an important role, it is the external security threat that gives more weight to the expansion and modernization of the Tatmadaw since 1988. It also argues that, despite its imperfections, the Tatmadaw has transformed from a force essentially for counter-insurgency operations into a force capable of fighting in limited conventional warfare.Printed Pages: 270. 104368

This volume, A Vedic Concordance, is part of the Harvard Oriental Series. A Vedic Concordance is a monumental work by the famous American Sanskritist Maurice Bloomfield planned prepared and published during the years 1892-1906. It affords primarily an easy and ready means of ascertaining the following things: First where a given mantra occurs if it occurs but once second whether it occurs wlsewhere either with or without variants and in what places and third if it occurs with variants what those variants are. One hundred and nineteen texts in all have been drawn upon for contributions to the concordance comprising .The concordance also includes a very considerable amount of material not yet published. The concordance may also be readily put to certain indirect or secondary uses which are scarcely less important for the systematic progress of vedic study. 102114

A History of Indian Literature (Vol. I: Introduction, Veda, Epics, Puranas and Tantras)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120802640; Hardcover; New; New;
Nearly seventy-five years ago Maurice Winternitz, the famous Austrian scholar and wrote the first volume of his A History of Indian Literature in German. This was followed by the second and third volumes after a few years. This English translation is based on the original German work and has been revised in the light of further researches on the subject by different scholars in India and elsewhere. The volume is divided into two sections. Section 1 relates to veda (the four samhitas), Brahamanas, Aranyakas, Upanisads, Vedangas and the literature of the Ritual. It discusses some of the most complicated problems such as the Age of the Veda, etc. on which Vedic scholars have differed widely. Section II relates to the study of two great Epics of India: The Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It carries out a general survey of the Puranic literature, and provides ample information about the Tantras too. The book presents a history of ancient culture of the Veda, the philosophical thought of Upanisads, the ethos of the epics and Puranas, spiritual and material contents of the Tantra literature.Printed Pages: 602. 102588

Elements of String Cosmology
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0521868750; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 175 x 255 Mm
The standard cosmological picture of our Universe emerging from a 'big bang' leaves open many fundamental questions which string theory, a unified theory of all forces of nature, should be able to answer. The first book dedicated to string cosmology, it contains a pedagogical introduction to the basic notions of the subject. It describes the new possible scenarios suggested by string theory for the primordial evolution of our Universe. It discusses the main phenomenological consequences of these scenarios, stresses their differences from each other, and compares them to the more conventional models of inflation. The book summarizes over 15 years of research in this field and introduces current advances. It is self-contained, so it can be read by astrophysicists with no knowledge of string theory, and high-energy physicists with little understanding of cosmology. Detailed and explicit derivations of all the results presented provide a deeper appreciation of the subject. • First book fully devoted to string cosmology, summarizing the results of 15 years of work • Includes self-contained introductions to cosmology and string theory • Contains detailed derivations of all presented results allowing for a deeper understanding and aiding preparation for independent research Contents Preface; Acknowledgements; Notation, units and conventions; 1. A short review of standard and inflationary cosmology; 2. The basic string cosmology equations; 3. Conformal invariance and string effective action; 4. Duality symmetries and cosmological solutions; 5. Inflationary kinematics; 6. The string phase; 7. The cosmic background of relic gravitational waves; 8. The 7 Worst Mistakes Investors Make: The Deadly Sins of Investing and How to Save Your Finandial Future
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184952708; Softcover; New;
Perhaps you hope that your investments will take you to financial heaven. But what if you are already on a path that could condemn your financial future to the eternal fires of... well, you know where. There is still time. Recognize the potential danger in every investment decision. Don’t succumb to one or more of the Seven Deadly Sins:Envy: Do you constantly judge your own success by that of others, resenting their success when your own investments falter?Vanity or Pride: Do you refuse to accept help or advice from others because you alone know what’s best?Lust: Do certain investments seem overpoweringly attractive to you (perhaps because of media hype or industry buzz) despite what common sense and cold, hard numbers tell you?Avarice or Greed: Do you hold onto investments long after they’ve lost their value, convinced that someday they will deliver a big return?Anger or Wrath: Do short-term changes in the market or your portfolio frustrate you? Do you sacrifice long-term growth for the quick hit?Gluttony: Do you gobble up every stock in sight not caring about your overall financial health?Sloth: Probably the most pervasive and dangerous sin of all. Have you been ignoring your financial future all along?Veteran investment professional Maury Fertig helps you identify those sins of which you may have been or continue to be guilty, and presents a clear and accessible path to financial salvation. Filled with tales of woe of big and layman investors and concrete directions showing you how not to commit the same mistakes The 7 Deadly Sins of Investing not only reveals the dark path on which you may now tread, but also lights a clear and safe road to financial paradise.Printed Pages: 224. 105564

The Very, Very Rich and How They Got That Way
Vision Books/Orient Paperbacks; New Delhi, India; 8170949130; Softcover; New;
This classic reveals how truly big money is made. It recounts the spectacular success stories of 15 crème de la crème of the self-made super-rich. Now, the wealthy are not just ordinary people, and the very, very rich are an even more special breed — and it was the desire to discover their mindset and approach that spurred Gunther's inquiry.This book is terrific entertainment, for these stories are stories of ordinary human beings rising to stunning heights. Each is a man who took his material environment as he found it and conquered it absolutely. In a sense, then, these are fairy tales.Which brings up the second good reason for reading this book: The lives of the very, very rich gathered here are highly instructive. Their secrets and methods can be learned from, adapted and applied by all those who themselves harbour dreams of supreme fortune."COME WITH ME NOW, ye seekers, and stand before this great golden door. In a while we will turn the jewelled key and go in. Step softly. Speak in whispers. We are about to enter the presence of Wealth . . ." Printed Pages: 296. 106690

Brand New World: How India, China, Russia, Brazil are Reshaping Business
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184951329; Softcover; New;
We live in a brand new world where marketing is taking on incredible new forms, especially in the hyper-developing countries India, China, Russia and Brazil. The almost unimaginable economic growth in these nations is revolutionizing marketing across the world.Take, for instance, India’s best version of a hustling oligarch: Vijay Mallya. In 1983 he inherited the Bangalore-based UB Group, a liquor company that was third-tier at best. United Breweries is now India’s biggest brewer, buoyed by the Kingfisher brand. Vijay Mallya started an airline with the same name after a ban on beer advertising. The Indian oligarch parlayed the beer brand to launch a flourishing surrogate one. Focus Media Holding, founded in 2003, has transformed China’s advertising landscape with over 190,000 screens scattered throughout the country. The founder Jason Jiang has amassed an estimated $1.8 billion fortune. An ex-advertising executive at a Shanghai agency, Jiang bet it all on a hunch that Chinese consumers wouldn’t mind watching ads while waiting for an elevator. And he was right.In this book the author shares other such groundbreaking business models and marketing strategies that every business visionary needs to understand. Brisk, fascinating, and a little bit shocking, Brand New World is an indispensable guide for the new era of global marketing.Printed Pages: 280. 105580

Though they differ from each other and criticize each other they share neveretheless so many things in common and we can understand them as products of one and the same soil though cultivated by different Acharyas.All the six systems of thought promise to teach the nature of soul, and its relation to Supreme being. They all undertake to supply the means of knowing the nature of that Supreme being, and through that knowledge to pave the way to liberation and Supreme happiness. They all share the conviction that there is suffering in the world and that has to be removed.The present study by Max Muller is a comprehensive analysis of all the six schools of Indian thought. Mother
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8179920224; Softcover; New;
Mother, the immortal classic of Maxim Gorky, one of the world's best-loved writers, is the story of the radicalization of an uneducated woman from her dull peasant existence into active participation in her people's struggle for justice. Through her work she frees herself from the cowed state into which she has been beaten, and her simple motherly concern for her son becomes a motherly concern for all oppressed.To read Mother is to undergo a great emotional experience. It is a novel of strength and power, a tribute to the dignity of the individual. As one well-known literary critic puts it : "and then I came on Mother, the first of Gorky I had ever seen, and much of what I had read became thin and tasteless by comparison. It was tapestry after cotton and burlap, living, breathing people after cardboard cutouts... it was the hope and zeal of all human beings."Printed Pages: 396. 105487

The Other Side of Policing
Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8189766724; Hardcover; New; New;
Forgotten and buried deep behind the uniform is a common man. As The Other Side of Policing attempts to break the stereotype of policing as an obsession with guns, crime and criminals, it insists that even the cops have a penchant for humour. At times, for people like Maxwell, it is the humour that makes them survive in a system that kills initiatives.The book is based on the author’s own experiences as a policeman for nearly 35 years where he provides an insider’s account of someone who has experienced everything at close quarters and can afford to be critical of the system as a whole. He recounts gripping stories about how policeman learn to survive under the axe of the media, politicians, common people and their own seniors.In his anecdotal account, the author talks of various incidents and projects the men behind uniform as human beings who could succumb to the trials and tribulations of power. He talks about the inability of cops to do anything when high profile politicians enact stage dramas to stay in the limelight, how the cops take liberties to kill at will, how a South Indian to whom all Sikhs looked the same learnt to differentiate between them and how an April Fool’s prank resulted in a senior officer waiting at the airport to receive a VIP when none was scheduled to arrive.His narration laced with humour provides a fresh look at unexplored alleys and brings home the point that at the end of the day we all need our daily dose of banter and policing provides ample opportunities for that. The author hopes that this book will connect easily with the man on the street and help bridge the gap between police and people. Printed Pages: 278. 107263

Indian Media in a Globalised World
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8132104013; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book explores the transformation of Indian media in the context of two major developments: globalisation (which Sociologist Anthony Giddens terms as being ‘revolutionary’) and advances in communication technologies. It is rich in empirical details of how the Indian media has evolved in the past two decades, particularly in the context of potential to transform, construct and nurture particular identities in response to globalisation. The study of the transformation of Indian media is significant because not only has globalisation allowed access to a host of things hitherto represented as ‘foreign’ to Indian culture by the media, but has also opened the floodgates for foreign media. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, this book looks at the role of media in purveying political, economic and cultural identities, the current definitions of ‘we’, ‘they’, and the ‘other’, and how the ‘other’ is perceived in contemporary India. The discussions cover all forms of media, that is, newspaper, films, radio, television and online media, along with media policy and other economic challenges facing the media. The Promise of Power: The Origins of Democracy in India and Autocracy in Pakistan
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 1107046068; Hardcover; New; New;
Under what conditions are some developing countries able to create stable democracies while others have slid into instability and authoritarianism? To address this classic question at the center of policy and academic debates The Promise of Power investigates a striking puzzle: why upon the 1947 Partition of British India was India able to establish a stable democracy while Pakistan created an unstable autocracy? Drawing on interviews colonial correspondence and early government records to document the genesis of two of the twentieth century's most celebrated independence movements Maya Tudor refutes the prevailing notion that a country's democratization prospects can be directly attributed to its levels of economic development or inequality. Instead she demonstrates that the differential strengths of India's and Pakistan's independence movements directly account for their divergent democratization trajectories. She also establishes that these movements were initially constructed to pursue historically conditioned class interests. By illuminating the source of this enduring contrast The Promise of Power offers a broad theory of democracy's origins that will interest scholars and students of comparative politics democratization state-building and South Asian political history.Printed Pages: 254 with 8 b/w illustrations, 1 table & 3 maps. 101458
