India: Urban Poverty Report 2009
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0198060254; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The India: Urban Poverty Report 2009 identifies the problems faced by the poor and focuses on the systemic changes that are needed. It looks at the process of globalization and the development strategy in the country, and asks why the poor exist in urban India and how they are being physically and economically absorbed into the system. It analyses the processes of urbanization, migration, changes in the economic structure, and the pattern of infrastructural investment, highlighting how these impact on the well-being of the poor. The central concerns of this report include: • trends and patterns of migration; • dynamics of urban land and capital market; • marginalization of the poor to the urban periphery; • changes in urban governance; • gender dimensions of urban poverty; • unorganized workforce and the informal sector; • provision of and access to basic services and amenities indicating quality of life; and • the appalling conditions in slums. The essays present both the challenges as well as some of the innovative solutions that are being tried out in different parts of the country. With a focus on the goal of inclusive cities in India, this report will be an important contribution to the re-evaluation of existing policies and programmes to redress urban poverty. 026200

MGNREGA Sameeksha: An Anthology of Research Studies on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 2006-2012
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125047255; Softcover; New;
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the flagship rural employment Scheme of the Government of India, was launched in February 2006. It is perhaps the largest and most ambitious social security and public works programme in the world. Six years after its implementation, the basic principles and high potential of the MGNREGA are well established. The fact that about one-fourth (25 per cent) of all rural households in the country participate in the programme every year, is testimony to its resounding popularity. Since its inception, around Rs 110,000 crore has gone directly as wage payment to rural households, and 1,200 core person-days of employment have been generated. MGNREGA with its demand-driven design, rights-based structure and unprecedented scale has attracted the attention of several scholars, researchers, social activists, and policymakers and analysts around the world. This anthology is a synthesis of over a hundred studies on MGNREGA, its impact and implementation. It provides a readable summary of these studies and popularly expressed concerns. It also seeks to identify unanswered questions on both the impact and potential of MGNREGA that will require further research. The report is objective in identifying both the positive impact of the Scheme as well as the constraints that limit MGNREGA’s effective implementation.Printed Pages: 128. 101819

Middle-Class Moralities: Everyday Struggle Over Belonging and Prestige in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125037896; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
New middle-classes present themselves as the epitome of modernity and progress. Both in their role as social models and culture-brokers, they seem to promote a heightened consciousness of cultural difference and nationalism. Middle-Class Moralities examines how the new middle classes of India create identities, practices and politics of the everyday in a dialogue that involves other social categories and an imaginary West. Drawing upon ethnographic and interview material, this book studies family relations, leisure, food, housing and religious practices of these emerging and enterprising social classes. Defining the middle classes is a political and embodied process that people negotiate by making instrumental use of (or domesticating) the idea of the West. A closer and analytical look at the consumption-driven, status-obsessed middle classes reveals their deeper struggles that seek to engage such cultural concepts as dharma, purity, and auspiciousness. The fieldwork for this study was conducted mainly in the city of Hyderabad among its upwardly mobile people who have identified themselves as “Hindus.” The Indian situation, argues the author, is comparable to that of the urban middle classes elsewhere, especially those of the traditionally hierarchical Asian societies. The dilemmas of these classes in a fast-globalizing India have seldom been given the detailed attention offered in these pages. Printed Pages: 236. 030720

Wall Paintings of Rajasthan
National Museum; New Delhi, India; 2004; 818583220X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 30 Cms x 40 Cms
The book is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, an attempt has been made to put the paintings in their setting. The way geography influenced the pattern of early settlements and helped to evolve a very sturdy and hardworking character of the people of this region has been discussed at the outset. The historical perspective which has determined the cultural mores of Rajasthan, beginning with the birth of the Rajput dynasties, their dominance, contact with the Mughals and the Marathas has been discussed. The extent to which religious movements and beliefs of the time influenced culture has also been brought out. The economic system which resulted in the patronage of art through the rulers, the aristocracy, the big religious mathas and later on the trading and banking families and the powerful community of the Jains has been critically evaluated and discussed. In the second chapter, the important centres of wall paintings found in the Rajput States of Mewar, Marwar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Amber, Bundi, and Kotah, and in the feudatory estates of these States have also been discovered and discussed. The technique of preparing the walls, the quality and character of the drawings, the methods and varieties of colour schemes emploted have been discussed in detail. An analysis of the presentation of the way space, movement, balance, expression, tension and iconography have been portrayed has been done in great depth in the third chapter. The stylistic influences on the art of Rajasthani wall paintings right from the tradition of Ajanta, the Jain School of Painting, the Deccani style and the Malwa painting have been traced and analysed. The interaction with the Mughals enriched both the Mughal ateliers in their artistic endeavours and further encouraged the patronage of painting by the Rajasthani courts and also brought a greater naturalism to the Rajasthani tradition of painting. A comparison of the contemporary Pahadi and Bundelkhandi Schools has also been discussed. The similarity and interaction between the Rajasthani miniature tradition and the style of wall painting has been analysed. These interactions ultimately produced a unique art celebrating life in all its facets of glory, joy, love and the cultural ethos of basically a warrior community which is distinct and distinguished in itself and makes a powerful statement in Indian art. The personalities of the patrons and the names of artists whose existence is supported by reliable documentary evidence has been discussed in the last chapter. The book has taken several years of research and uses for the first time hitherto unpublished archival material to date the paintings in a definitive fashion. The book does not limit itself to the chronological and thematic content of Rajasthani painting but gives great emphasis to its technical and aesthetic aspects. The stength of the book lies in giving the tradition of wall paintings its due place in the great artistic heritage of India. Printed Pages: 447 with numerous colour illustrations. 021868

Women, Citizenship and Difference
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8189013335; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book makes an important contribution towards an understanding of citizenship as mediated by other collective, historically determined identities: of gender, ethnicity, class and national status. It brings together a group of prominent inetrenational scholars from moral philosophy, law, political science and sociology to offer a major reconceptualization of the idea of citizenship. The contributors demonstrate how the growing ambivalence of State sovereignty in the face of multinational capitalism and the absence of political accountability structures are complicit in the definitions of gendered citizenship. Against these, women's communal mobilization and politcal activisms are considered in terms of their power effects and political potentialities. Contents Notes on Contributors Preface 1. Passionate Enlightenment: Women in Tantric Buddhism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8121508207; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
The crowning cultural achievement of medieval India, Tantric Buddhism is known in the West primarily for the sexual practices of its adherents, who strive to transform erotic passion into spiritual ecstasy. Historians of religion have long held that the enlightenment thus attempted was for men only, and that women in the movement were at best marginal and subordinate and at worst degraded and exploited. Miranda Shaw argues to the contrary, presenting extensive new evidence of the outspoken and independent female founders of the Tantric movement and their creative role in shaping its distinctive vision of gender relations and sacred sexuality. Anyone who reads a Tantric text or enters a Tantric temple immediately encounters a pantheon of female Buddhas and a host of female enlighteners known as "dakinis," who dance and leap in joyous poses that communicate a sense of mastery and spiritual power. This striking female imagery is fully compatible with Shaw's findings. Drawing on interviews and archival research conducted during two years of fieldwork in India and Nepal, including more than forty previously unnoticed works by women of the Pala period (eighth through twelfth centuries CE), she substantially reinterprets the history of Tantric Buddhism during its first four centuries. In her view, the Tantric theory of this period promotes an ideal of cooperative, mutually liberative relationships between women and men while encouraging a sense of reliance on women as a source of spiritual insight and power. Stylistics of Early Khmer Art, 2 Vols.
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8173052565; Hardcover; New; New;
The present volume contains translations of Benisti's major publications dealing with Khmer art. The main article is a study of the relations between early Khmer and Indian art, i.e. seventh and eighth centuries, the crucial period of the introduction of Indian religion and other components of Indian culture in the first well-organized kingdom of Khmer land. She has referred to the process of transfer of concepts and motifs; movable objects, such as statues, caskets, ritual objects, etc., transported from India to Khmer land and their decoration which could have inspired local artists.Benisti held that art is a living entity and that it is always in a state of transformation. In this context, she has pointed out links and translations between different styles, moments of evolution in which a particular style abandoned some characters and adopted the primitive aspect of new characters of a later style. Several articles contained in this volume bring to light moments of transition from one style to another. She has given precise definitions and analysis of decorative motifs - the bezelband, the makara, the voluted leaf, the beaded garland, pendant, etc. Her systematic survey of styles, along with detailed study of iconography, thus provides a solid foundation for a comprehensive study of Khmer art.Printed Pages: 424. 101704

Bahadur Shah and the Festival of Flower-Sellers
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125046186; Softcover; New;
It was a queen’s promise that upon the release of her son from prison, she would present a ritual chadar cloth and a floral decoration at the holy dargah of Mehrauli. This procession and the offering of flowers that became an annual ritual for both Hindus and Muslims, came to be known as phool valon ki sair, or the festival of flower-sellers, and it continues to this day. In the days of Bahadur Shah II, the festival took the form of an exuberant celebration, an experience that brought the city of Delhi alive. In a narrative that captures the delight that once filled the hearts of the people of the city, when they came together regardless of their religious diversities, Mirza Farhatullah Beg brings this experience to the reader. Beg takes us through the Mehrauli that was. We travel with him from the mango-grove and the cascading waters of the Shamsi Talab, to the busy bazars glimmering with mirrors, chandeliers and lamps; from the sweet call of the peacock and papiha, and the gentle drizzle of Bhadon rain, to the songs of Tirmunhi Khanam and Dildar; from the fragrance of andarsas and suhals frying in the angithees to the aroma of kachoris and kebabs in the shops on the streets; from the flare of the dancers' pishwaz to the tinkle of her glass bangles … to the grand procession itself, accompanied by the dhol and shehnai, by wrestling matches, kite-flying competitions, and the magic of fireworks lighting up the sky—a spectacle that continued well past midnight.Printed Pages: 100. 101888

The Last Mushaírah of Dehli
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125039678; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The twilight Delhi of the later Mughals, decadent in statesmanship, devastated by marauders, declining in history, still managed to leave behind something more durable than marble and sandstone: a magnificent body of Urdu poetry and prose. It is this facet of the city that Mirza Farhatullah Baig Dehalvi captures in this unique literary work. Drawing upon living memory, manuscripts and other documents, he wrote Dehli ki Akhri Shama’, a fictional account of what purports to be the last great musha’irah held in Delhi under the patronage of Bahadur Shah ‘Zafar’, the last Mughal emperor. The narrative recreates for us the various stages of organizing such an occasion, introduces us to unforgettable people and now-forgotten places, and builds up to the climax—the musha’irah itself—at which all the important Urdu poets of the time are present. The present volume is the first-ever English translation of Farhatullah Baig’s classic, accompanied by a long introduction, textual and other annotations, and extensive glossary. Much more than a work of translation, this is a labour of love and scholarship. Printed Pages: 192. 032726

Two lovers are destined to meet in the city of Srinagar. Roohi is a beautiful, spirited girl who is haunted by dreams of a mysterious man she believes is her true love. Faiz is a young papier-mâché artist on the cusp of painting his masterpiece, the Falaknuma. When fate conspires to bring them together one windswept evening, both fall irrevocably in love.But it is the 1990s. Kashmir is simmering with political strife and rebellion, and it is only a matter of time before Srinagar is engulfed in the gathering storm. Before they know it, the city they call home is besieged and erupts in violence, threatening everything the two lovers hold dear. An age-old tale of love, war, duty and choice, The Book of Gold Leaves is as devastatingly resonant as it is beautifully written.Printed Pages: 320. 103379

The Laghusiddhantakaumudi of Varadaraja (Volume 1: A Primer of Panini's Grammar)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834518; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Varadaraja wrote the Laghusiddhantakaumudi, a short version of Bhattojidiksita's Siddhantakaumudi, in order to inculcate an ability in beginners to gain access to the Astadhyayi as he claims in the invocatory verse. This work, which is the first of the three-volume project, covers 371 sutras on samjna, sandhi, subanta and avyaya prakaranas. It includes the translation of the sutra and the vrtti on it by Varadaraja, which is followed by the paraphrased sutra in which padas are kept in nonsandhi form. The carried over padas are given along with the sutras from the Astadhyayi from which they have been carried over. In the elucidation that follows the paraphrase, the meaning of the sutra and the vrtti thereon is explained in detail. Relevant grammatical aspects have also been discussed so that some light is thrown on the depth and nuances of vyakarana-sastra. The present work fulfils a compelling need for a detailed commentary on the Laghusiddhantakaumudi in English.Printed Pages: 644. 102557

The Laghusiddhantakaumudi of Varadaraja (Volume 2: A Primer of Panini's Grammar)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120835336; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present volume, which is the second of the three-volume-series, expounds 391 sutras of the Laghusiddhantakaumudi that explain the conjugational process of verbal roots and related grammatical principles. When the verbal terminations, that is tin-affixes which are replacements for the abstract affix are introduced, the conjugational process is set in motion. This process is more complex than the declensional process of nominal stems. This is the reason why the exposition o the conjugation of verbal stems requires a more detailed analysis for the sake of comprehensibility and clarity. The verbal roots after which the verbal terminations are added are listed in the dhatupatha and arranged in ten groups known as ganas. There are about 1944 verbal roots out of which 226 have been treated in the present work, besides the five sautra roots. The second kind of verbal roots, after which the verbal endings are introduced, are those which are derived with the introduction of the following twelve affixes: san, kyac, kamyac, kyan, kyas, kvip, nic, yan, yak, aya, iyan and nin. The latter kind of derived verbal roots are assigned the dhatu-designation by sanadyanta dhatavah (467). The personal verbal terminations which are used after both kinds of verbal stems are prescribed in the governing domain of dhatoh. They are divided into two mutually exclusive categories: sarvadhatuka and ardhadhatuka. The derivational journey of a verbal root starts with the introduction of the abstract affix and ends with the finished verbal form fit to be used in an actual utterance. As such, the significance of the conjugational analysis can be inferred from the important role that a finished verbal form plays in a sentence. The transformations, which a verbal stem under goes till it reaches the finished form with which it is actually used in a speech condition, are so varied and sometimes so drastic that the original form of the verbal root becomes difficult to identify. That is why it is of prime importance to have a sound knowledge of the conjugational derivation of a verbal root, which is the subject-matter of the present volume.Printed Pages: 757. 102558

The Laghusiddhantakaumudi of Varadaraja (Volume 3: A Primer of Panini's Grammar)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 201; 8120836162; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present volume, which is the third and final of the three-volume-series, consists of five chapters containing the elucidated translation of 508 sutras and 69 varttikas which lay down the meaning conditions for the use of case-endings and explain the derivational process of primary (krdanta) and secondary (taddhitanta) derivates, compounds (samasa) and feminine forms. The scheme and method of exposition adopted in the preceding two volumes have been followed here also. In the first chapter, the krt-affixes are expounded. The affixes, which are prescribed after verbal roots in the governing domain of dhatoh (763) and are other than tin-affixes, are designated as krt in accordance with the aphorism krdatin (301). These primary affixes are employed to form nominal bases like karta, pacaka, etc. and other primary derivatives such as pitva, gacchan, etc. These affixes have been treated under four heads in the Laghu: (1) krtya affixes, (2) purvakrdanta, (3) unadisutras and (4) uttarakrdanta. The second chapter entitled vibhaktyartha-prakarana discusses the karaka and upapada case-endings very briefly. The third chapter is devoted to compounds (samasa). The words for the sake of brevity. The purpose of the grammatical function of compounding words is to bring about a unique single word which is to have one main accent (aikapadyam aikasvaryan ca samasatvad bhavati, Kasika on Pa 2.1.27). To explain, the syntactically and semantically connected words rajnah and purusah occurring in the string rajnah purusah, are combined into a single compound word rajapurusah by sasthi (927). Since it is treated as a single word, it has one main accent, that is, the last vowel a, following the cerebral sibilant s, is marked with the udatta accent by samasasya Pa. 6.1.223. The fourth chapter explains the derivational process after the introduction of taddhita affixes which are introduced after a finished word ending in a sup-affix which is deleted as the derivatives formed with these affixes are assigned the pratipadika designation by krttaddhitasamasasca (116). The last chapter contains the elucidation of the sutras which prescribe feminine affixes to form feminine derivates.Printed Pages: 675. 102559

Inclusive Education Across Cultures: Crossing Boundaries, Sharing Ideas
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299038; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This comprehensive collection provides a global perspective on inclusive education. The existing literature delves into whether inclusive practice is about educating children with disabilities or children from diverse backgrounds. The articles in this compilation assert that it is both. Inclusive Education Across Cultures: Crossing Boundaries, Sharing Ideas brings together multiple perspectives to present a compelling case for inclusive practice in different areas of inclusive education, ranging from policy initiatives to practices on the ground level, and advocating and creating awareness. The articles present examples that are explicitly disability-focussed and at the same time present a vision of inclusion that is about societal reform. These articles provide a voice to the people living with disabilities and enable us to learn from their stories. They not only provide theoretical information, but also connect theory and practice by discussing implemented models and practical resources. This work will be a valuable resource material for all those involved in the study of education, social work and psychology. Printed Pages: 500. 033307

A Letter from India: Contemporary Short Stories from Pakistan
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143030493; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
A Letter from India brings together the best short fiction by some of the most important voices of Pakistani literature. Refreshing in their style and diverse in their themes, these stories—in English, and translated from Urdu and Punjabi—reflect a move away from nationalism and parochialism as they examine issues of identity, sexuality, individual freedom and interpersonal relationships. If Intizar Husain’s ‘A Letter from India’ presents us with an insight into the psyche of a family torn apart by Partition (and the consequent loss of a family tree), in Asad Mohammad Khan’s ‘The Squatter’ we discover pure and simple human love that doesn't lend legitimacy to religious barriers. In Nadir Ali’s ‘Feeqa’s Death’ the protagonist’s dream becomes a device to reflect on sudden tragedies wrought upon a community by outside forces, while Zubair’s ‘The Door Is Open’ manipulates dreams to deconstruct personal fear and family tyranny. Sorayya Khan’s and Azra Waqar’s stories speak of the lingering pain and guilt that seep into individual lives from national tragedies left unquestioned and unexplored. And while ‘Spots’ humanizes social outcasts, Ashu Lal’s ‘Mangoes in the Time of Winter’ critiques the decadence of exclusive sub-cultures. Printed Pages: 184. 002764

The Spiritual Roots of National Integration: Vedantic and Sufi Interpretationmoa
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8182201802; Hardcover; New; New;
The collection of papers in this book published in India and abroad, bring up a synthesis of Sufi and Vedantic concepts and the ideas originating in Humanistic and Existential Psychology. The authors have demonstrated the heuristic power of these concepts giving a fresh orientation in psychological thought providing an academic base for National Integration. The authors have intended to bring up the Sufi and Vedantic tradition in their meaning for the conditions as they exist today. They believe that National integration has no base in the absence of these traditions that now call for their scientific interpretation. These papers are therefore an attempt to provide a scientifically oriented conceptual base for a meaningful approach to National integration which over loaded with political ideas. Contemporary Indian Artists from Bengal
Mapin Publishing; Ahmedabad, India; 2003; 1890206644; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 28 Cms x 28 Cms
Modern Indian painting came into its own when artists began to fuse traditional approaches with the bold experimentation of the west. Indian subjects are treated in startlingly different ways as these eleven artists from Bengal evoke through symbol, myth, colours and lines, the rich and complex aspects of this amazing land. Green landscapes threaded by gleaming rivers, mysterious and lovely Radhas rising from beds of purple lotuses, Durgas astride lions, business men with rolled umbrellas, women working and dreaming, leaves and water, Gods and beasts, are caught in colours and shapes rich enough to make one see the world in a fresh, glinting light. The eldest of the painters represented in this volume was born in 1918, the youngest in 1965; the time span is the twentieth century, and the style modern, but these Christs and Noahs and Krishnas speak of realities as old as the hills, as permanent as the plains. The paintings simply stun one into silence. This volume reaches out to a public that may never see these paintings, may never have been to Bengal, never thought of the intricate design that lies under the plethora of phenomena. We hear them speak; we learn about their lives by the river, or in the city, or the small town; we see how passion drives them to paint, and we catch something of that flame. Insurgency and Counterinsurgency in South Asia
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789384463038; Softcover; New;
This book underscores the need for South Asian decision makers and relevant actors around the world to systematically examine the nature of intrastate insurgent movements. Using the ‘conflict curve’ theory of conflict evolution ten experts native to South Asia consider the trajectories of four of the most salient armed insurgencies in a region that has experienced many such sustained conflicts and the counterinsurgent response to each. Case studies on India Pakistan Nepal and Sri Lanka lend important lessons on the dynamics of each conflict while collectively offering insights into how and why insurgencies occur and transform as well as how they can be prevented or resolved. Through a peacebuilding lens the contributors ask what incentives led resentful groups to resort to armed insurgency and once insurgency was under way how it was managed. While many studies of insurgency and counterinsurgency emphasize military tactics and terrorism responses this volume hones in on policy-relevant conclusions pertinent to the peacebuilding field. Detailed maps created especially for this volume illustrate the conflict regions. Emphasizing nonviolent means to prevent or mitigate conflict the book highlights the opportunities and constraints in applying peacebuilding approaches across the conflict curve identifying recommendations for the disputing parties as well as for peacebuilders.Printed Pages: 326. 101453

Studies in Medieval Indian Polity and Culture: The Delhi Sultanate and Its Times
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198069944; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Mohammad Habib (1895–1971) was one of the foremost historians of medieval India. This volume presents a representative collection of his works, which in their time brought many innovative ideas to the study of the Delhi Sultanate. He examines not just the emperors—their campaigns, strategies, and political ideas—but also the conditions of peasants, artisans, weavers, and the mass of people of the Indian subcontinent during the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. The essays span the political history of the Sultanate period, including an evaluation of Mahmud Ghaznin’s campaigns, Ziya Barani’s description of the politico-economic and social contexts, study of Sufi records, and other contemporary sources. While presenting insights about every aspect of medieval Indian life, the historian and his thoughts themselves emerge as a subject for the study of national historiography and, later, the beginnings of Marxist historical analyses. Habib calls upon historians to reject the ‘bourgeois’ approach and focus instead on the history of the oppressed. Irfan Habib’s insightful introduction situates Mohammad Habib’s writings in the context not only of the development of Indian historiography, but also of the influences of the environment of his own time. Afghanistan in World Politics: A Study of Afghan-U.S. Relations
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1987; 8121200970; Hardcover; New; New;
Afghanistan a landlocked developing country, is geographically contiguous to Soviet Union, but a distant Country to the United States. The analysis of Relationship between a small developing country like Afghanistan and a geographically distant Super Power like the United States, presents a unique Study in many respects.The analysis of Afghan-US Relations has almost remained a neglected area of serious Academic research. The plethora of literature available on Afghanistan has not even provided a cursory treatment to this most crucial and significant aspect.A cursory analysis of the available literature leaves many questions unanswered. Can a small country like Afghanistan be usurped by a Super Power? How the small and weak Nations can survive? Will the inaction by the non-aligned Movement (NAM) and the United Nations in getting the Russian aggression vacated from Afghanistan, further encourage the Russians to annex other non-aligned countries? Can United States, as a Super Power, Help in restoration of the non-aligned status of Afghanistan safeguard its territorial integrity and sovereignty etc.The author has made an humble endeavour to probe all the aspects in detail in the present book. It is not only an attempt at providing answers to various fundamental questions arising in the aftermath of Russian invasion of Afghanistan but also provides a detailed background of Afghanistan's Relations with the United States. The book is divided into six main chapters. The first chapter provides an indepth analysis of the major factors which have been the hallmark of Afghanistan's foreign policy. The evolution of Afghan-US relations until the Second World War is analyzed in the second chapter. Afghanistan's vigorous pursuit of the Policy of neutrality in the wake of Cold war which immediately succeeded the end of the Second World War and Afghan US relations in the post-war period are critically examined in the third chapter. Economic relation in the form of trade, Aid and Technical assistance between Afghanistan and the United States have been analyzed in the fifth chapter. The concluding part of the book makes a dispassionate Review of the policy of the United States towards Russian invasion of Afghanistan and suggests the potential policy Measures for the United States in cooperation with other Countries especially the non-aligned community to help resolve the Afghan Tangle.Printed Pages: 176. 105659

18792 Mohammad Yasin, Madh Avi Yasin & Dr Karan Singh (Frwd)
Mystries and Glimpses of Kashmir
Raj Publications; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8186208038; Softcover; New;
The Book throws light on different facets of Kashmir history. Prof. Yasin's contention that Jesus Christ's last remains lie buried in Khaniyar, Srinagar, is not to rake up any religious controversy, but his approach is purely historical. It is not a new discovery, but what has been already said by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian and others, has been analysed critically in historical apparatus without any religious bias.Similarly his surmise that Kongvatan in Kashmir is Kundalvana, the venue of the 4th Buddhist Council, was the result of physical varification of the location given by Hieun Tsang. The other papers explain 'the riddle of the cultural synthesis and essential unity and oneness of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.'Madhavi Yasin's papers are important from the point of view of sources, socio-cultural and political history. They would be useful alike to research scholars and general readers. She has focussed attention on the position and status of women, and their gradual but steady march towards emancipation. She has highlighted the fact that in the Ladakh division of Jammu and Kashmir, the women are more liberated than their counterparts.Printed Pages: 267. 106330

October Coup: A Memoir of the Struggle for Hyderabad
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174364730; Softcover; New;
It is 1948. A newly-independent India is trying to persuade Hyderabad to join the Indian Union. Negotiations are difficult for both sides. The State Congress, now operating from Indian territory, has launched a campaign of violent raids, designed to cripple civil administration in the border areas, and provoke an annexation. The leading Islamic party inside Hyderabad, in an equally rash move, has created a para-military body, the Razakars, to counter the threat to Hyderabad’s borders.For Mohammed Hyder of the Hyderabad Civil Service, the newly-appointed Collector of Osmanabad District (situated on the Hyderabad-Bombay border), both, the wayward State Congress and the ramshackle Razakar outfit are a threat to law and order. This first-person account conveys a vivid picture of Hyderabad under pressure, through the eyes of a senior district administrator. Printed Pages: 238. 108555
