Behind the Mask: The Cultural Definition of the Legal Subject in Colonial Bengal (1715-1911)
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195680839; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The colonial state deployed its most powerful ideological and operation rationale–the Rule of Law, on the indigenous elite at the turn of the nineteenth century. Behind the Mask investigates the deeper area of class antagonism between the privileged and underprivileged classes as they faced the colonial state and its different ideas of legality and sovereignty in colonial Bengal. It explores the ambiguity in the bhadralok–the educated middle class– response to courts and jails. The author argues that the discourse of superior ‘bhadralok’ ethics and morals was juxtaposed against the ‘chhotolok’ – who were devoid of such ethical values. This enabled the bhadralok to claim for themselves the position of the ‘aware’ legal subject as a class – a ‘good’ subject obedient to the dictates of the new rule of law, unlike the recalcitrant and ethically ill-equipped chhotolok. Mukhopadhyaya underlines the development of a new cultural language of morality that delineated the parameters of bhadralok public behaviour. As the ‘rule of law’ of the British government slid unobtrusively into the public domain, the criminal courts and the jails turned into public theatres of infamy – spaces that the ethically bound bhadralok dreaded occupying. The author documents how the colonial legal and penal institutions streamlined the identities of some sections of the lower castes into 'criminal classes’. She also examines the nature of colonial bureaucracy and highlights the social silence on gender female criminality. 019669

A Study of Time in Indian Philosophy
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8120833740; Hardcover; New; New;
Since its first publication, A Study of Time in Indian Philosophy has been acclaimed as having successfully shown ‘the simple falsity’ of such clichés that the Indian view of time is ‘cyclic’ or that it is exclusively ‘illusory’. Given the variety of views discussed in this work, it is evident that the theme of time is intimately related to such basic concepts as being and becoming, change and causality, creation and annihilation. It has been therefore, observed that this book makes an excellent introduction to the heart of Indian thought. Based on Sanskrit source material, this book is a unique attempt to presenting a comprehensive review of the widely divergent views about time in Indian thought. Clearly written, it succeeds in setting out the issues of discussion pointedly and cogently. Since the concept of time intervenes with such major concepts as that of causality, being and non-being etc., this book also “serves as a general introduction to the classic heart of Indian Philosophy.” The author “has demonstrated a rare ability to translate technical doctrines from one tradition of thought into the language of another”, and thus has made it possible- for all those who are concerned with the question of time but do not have access in the Indian conceptual world to appreciate the contributions of Indian thought with regard to this complex question. Noteworthy is the fact that this book is the first attempt which “successfully exposes the simple falsity” of such clichés as that the Indian view of time is ‘cyclic as opposed to the Judaeo-Christian understanding of linear time. A Study of Time in Indian Philosophy, therefore, renders a valuable service to all those who are concerned with cross-cultural and inter religious exchange.Printed Pages: 200. 102157

Civility, Literature and Culture in British India: 1822-1922
Routledge; London, UK; 0415304350; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
"Civility," a normative code of behaviour in British nineteenth-century society, became a means of imposing control and effecting exclusion when transferred to the colonial domain. This study examines the manner in which "civility" emerged as the ethos of the British colonial state in the Indian subcontinent and emerged as a key discursive idea around which questions about citizenship, education, gender, race, labor and bureaucratic or civil authority were negotiated. This discourse of civility, Anindyo Roy argues, provided the basis for disciplinary mechanisms essential to managing the historical exigencies confronting the British Empire in India. He traces the genealogy of civility in nineteenth and early twentieth-century literature and culture, covering a wide array of texts by authors such as Scott, Trelawny, Mull, Kipling, E.M. Forster and Leonard Woolf, late Victorian Anglo-Indian poetry as well as colonial archives relating to parliamentary debates, cadetship in East India Company and politics on education, industry and commerce. Contents Acknowledgements Introduction 1. Colonial civility and the regulation of social desire 2. Writing the liberal self: colonial civility and disciplinary regime 3. Policing the boundaries: civility and gender in the Anglo-Indian romances, 1880-1900 4. Savage pursuits: missionary civility and colonization in E.M. Forster's "The Life to Come" 5. Civility and the colonial state of body in Leonard Woolf Conclusion: civil conduct Notes References and bibliography Index. Printed Pages: 224. 027056

Debating Culture
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124607036; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Barring the political agenda, the vital forces associated with India's nationalist movement were moral, literary and artistic. Many cultural protagonists were vocal in saying that the regeneration of our society could happen through the revival of our arts and culture, not by politics and economics alone. This impulse was quite visible in cultural thought-leaders like Ananda Coomaraswamy, Sri Aurobindo, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita, John Woodroffe, Syamaprasad Mookerjee, K.M. Munshi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Rabindranath Tagore made a strong case for developing a complete and moving orb of Indian culture. This book delves deep into the vision of these thought-leaders in making India a culturally strong nation, and warns us in different ways against becoming insularly modern. These personalities remind us of our unique past and time-tested virtues and values, and the criticality of sustaining them while being "modern" in many ways. They exult in our past and call upon us to be the torch-bearers of this legacy. This volume, while doing an in-depth study of these Indian cultural activists, laments on the lackadaisical attitude of the leaders of Independent India in maintaining and promoting our art forms and long-revered culture. A renewed effort in rejuvenating our culture is the need of the hour, especially when its moorings seem to be loosening and its symbols diluting. It is an irony to call for the recognition of Indian culture in India! Printed Pages: 168. 100388

The Merchant and the State: The French in India, 1666-1739, 2 Vols.
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8121511119; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
This brief survey of the activities of the French East India Company in India, based principally on the unpublished factory records of the Frecnh archives, deals with their problems, their linkages with the mercantile groups and their relation with the local rulers. Starting with their arrival at Surat in 1666, this study closes with the occupation of Delhi by Nadir Shah in 1739, which marks the change of the attitude of the European powers including the French towards the Mughal Empire. However this work tries to give a total appraisal of the activities of the French and not their commerce only thus trying to understand the perception of the French in India, revealing in turn the changing Indian politico-economic situation. The fortune of the French in India declined from the end of the seventeenth century but considerably improved with the formation of another Company in 1719. New factories were established at Mahe, Karikkal and Patna. By 1730s, the investment of the Company touched the English investment in Bengal where the activities of Dupleix, narrated here from his unpublished private letters, shows the rising commerce and the increasing aggressive attitude of the French. Alfred Tarski: Life and Logic
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521802407; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
Alfred Tarski, one of the greatest logicians of all time, is widely thought of as ‘the man who defined truth’. His mathematical work on the concepts of truth and logical consequence are cornerstones of modern logic, influencing developments in philosophy, linguistics and computer science. Tarski was a charismatic teacher and zealous promoter of his view of logic as the foundation of all rational thought, a bon-vivant and a womanizer, who played the ‘great man’ to the hilt. Born in Warsaw in 1901 to Jewish parents, he changed his name and converted to Catholicism, but was never able to obtain a professorship in his home country. A fortuitous trip to the United States at the outbreak of war saved his life and turned his career around, even while it separated him from his family for years. By the war's end he was established as a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley. There Tarski built an empire in logic and methodology that attracted students and distinguished researchers from all over the world. From the cafes of Warsaw and Vienna to the mountains and deserts of California, this first full length biography places Tarski in the social, intellectual and historical context of his times and presents a frank, vivid picture of a personally and professionally passionate man, interlaced with an account of his major scientific achievements. • The first book-length biography of the great logician Alfred Tarski based on first-hand knowledge and original sources • It places Tarski within his historical, social and intellectual context, contrasting the first half of his life in Poland with the second half in the US • Includes Tarski’s main achievements in logic, set theory and algebraic logic and how and why they have become important in many fields • Many photographs Contents 1. The two Tarskis; 2. Independence and university; Interlude I. The Banach-Tarski paradox, set theory and the axiom of choice; 3. Polot! The Polish attribute; Interlude II. The completeness and decidability of algebra and geometry; 4. A wider sphere of influence; Interlude III. Truth and definability; 5. How the ‘unity of science’ saved Tarski’s Life; 6. The Vollage by the Sea
Puffin; New Delhi, India; 1992; 0143335499; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 19 Cms
Untouched by the twentieth century, Thul, the small fishing village near Bombay, is still ruled by the age-old seasonal rhythms. Hari and Lila have lived in the village all their lives, but their family is now desperately down on its luck. Their father drinks; their mother is seriously ill; and there is no money to keep them fed and clothed. Delicately and exquisitely executed, Anita Desai’s gentle and probing story traces the evolution of Hari and Lila into adults as each of them faces the family’s predicament – just as the first signs of industrial India creep into their village. ‘[Anita Desai] has the gift of opening up a closed world and making it clearly visible and, by the end, familiar.’ Sunday Times 003518

Voices in the City
Orient Paperbacks; New Delhi, India; 8122200532; Softcover; New;
Voices in the City is based on the life of the middle class intellectuals of Calcutta. It is an unforgettable story of a Bohemian brother and his two sisters caught in the crosscurrents of changing social values. In many ways the story reflects a vivid picture of India's social transition - a phase in which the older elements are not altogether dead, and the emergent ones not fully evolved. The novel describes the bitter effects of the urban living upon an Indian family. Brought up in luxury and magnificence by an over indulgent mother, Nirode settles down in Calcutta and becomes engrossed in its bohemian life, while his elder sister, Monisha lives out a servile existence within the rigid and stiff confines of a traditional Hindu family. Amla sees the city as a monster, Nirode sacrifices everything for his career, and Monisha cannot bear her stifling existence in the household of a wealthy old Calcutta family.Printed Pages: 254. 106640

Culinary Fictions: Food in South Asian Diasporic Culture
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 812151245X; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
For South Asians, food regularly plays a role in how issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and national identity are imagined as well as how motions of belonging are affirmed or resisted. Culinary Fictions provides food for thought as it considers the metaphors literature, film, and TV shows use to describe Indians abroad. When an immigrant mother in Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake combines Rice Krispies, Planters peanuts, onions, salt, lemon juice, and green chili peppers to create a dish similar to one found on Calcutta sidewalks, it evokes not only the character's Americanization, but also her nostalgia for India. Food, Anita Mannur writes, is a central part of the cultural imagination of diasporic populations. Culinary Fictions maps how it figures in various expressive forms, and illustrates how national identities are consolidated in culinary terms. Printed Pages: 269. 037522

Insights and Commentaries: South and Central Asia
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383649631; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume emerged out of a search for scholarship that has studied connectivity between South and Central Asia from a variety of perspectives. Geographically and culturally, the vision that India has had of the region she referred to as Central Asia is of a space extending across China westward upto the Aral Sea and including within it Balkh, Bukhara and Samarkand. The Indian fascination with the region extends to various levels as this is the region out of which invading tribes entered India, across whose Silk Routes trade flourished and also the region where Indian culture and religion spread. Keeping this in mind the volume begins with an overview of positions from which the region has been traditionally situated from the Indian perspective as also reflections on the current scenario in terms of the geopolitical transformations of recent times. It then moves on to examine the history of the political, cultural and economic connections between the two regions from comparative perspectives. Written by specialists from Uzbekistan the articles reflect on connections that had ancient roots and shared historical experiences. The first set of articles focus on the historical linkages between the two regions. Another set looks at similar developments in the region in terms of transformations in the socio-political life of the people as also in the economy. Encounters and the necessity of security cooperation between the two regions is the focus of a third set of articles. The second part of the volume looks into certain issues that are significant in both South and Central Asia. Written with Uzbek insight they reflect on Soviet and post-Soviet state policies on a range of issues from gender and maternity policies, ethnic policies and social stratification, information policy and policies related to global organizations that have comparable relevance in the Indian context.Printed Pages: 422. 105029

The State in Eurasia: Performance in Local and Global Arenas
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904473; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Since the emergence of post-Soviet states in the Eurasian space there has been considerable reflection on the role that the state has played in the local and global arenas. Transformation from being part of the Soviet to independent existence has meant state involvement in the forging of new nations out of disparate identities based on the criteria of national languages, the reinterpretation of historical events, depiction of personality-centric themes, the portrayal of illustrative careers and the rhetoric of development. This volume focuses on some of the aspects of this involvement through studies of the performative role of the Central Asian states in the arena of politics, diplomacy, culture, historical memory, and their interaction within the Eurasian space. It reflects on ways in which the state reacts to society and how discourses in the field of economy, society and culture dovetail with or diverge from the political discourse about state-building.Relations between formal institutions and informal structures; emerging conceptions of democracy in the context of the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan and the disruptive events in western Kazakhstan during the twentieth anniversary of the republics independence; the nature of bilateral and multilateral alignments among regional and interregional actors are some of the aspects through which the role of the state has been examined by the authors. The volume seeks to address the question of how the state acts as an agent of influence and control not just on performative traditions but also in the creation of a single community as the basis for a nation.Printed Pages: 300. 104321

Learn Chinese Through English
Goodwill Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 8172451091; Softcover; New;
(LEARN CHINESE THROUGH ENGLISH) is intended to be an intensive course book for beginners who have just started learning Chinese. This book lays emphasis on improving the ability of the learner to use Chinese for conversation.In recent years, the opportunities for business and educational trips to China have increased rapidly. Without some knowledge of the Chinese language, however, you will be either confined to your hotels and offices where English is spoken or totally dependent on the services of an interpreter.This book provides you the sentence pattern you will most often need and the vocabulary with which you can create new sentences. I have used not only easy-to-understand language, but also simple grammar. By recognizing the grammatical patterns each time they reappear, you will soon be able to use them on your own.In all the chapters, the English sentence is followed by its pronunciation in Chinese, known as pinyin which is the official transliteration of Chinese characters. This is followed by Chinese characters, known as Hanzi. The Hanzi used in this book are the simplified characters of China. Meaning of each Chinese character is given under it in English. If you have difficulty in pronouncing a Chinese word or phrase, you can point to the accompanying Hanzi and ask the Chinese with whom you wish to communicate to read it.In pinyin, I have given tones as they are listed in. the dictionary. In the introduction, I have explained how tone of some words depend on the tone of the word following; so while speaking Chinese, do keep in mind this change in tones.The key to learning a new language is repetition. Begin by practising a few simple phrases and then carry on with difficult ones. I am very grateful to Mr. Wushan whose expertise in writing pinyin was a great help to me. I am very-much indebted to - husband Surinder, who is also in the field Chinese language, for valuable suggestions. Printed Pages: 304. 108083

The Bakkarwals of Jammu and Kashmir: Navgating Through Nomadism
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8189738488; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 29 x 26 Cm
Sedentary patterns of living are often termed as ‘civilized’, yet, in semi-arid regions, pastoral nomadism remains an efficient subsistence-base. While seven per cent of India is nomadic, a majority have little access to development programmes. Research across continents reveals that the success of such initiatives among nomads is contingent upon their sensitivity to a mobile lifestyle. The pastoral Bakkarwals of Jammu and Kashmir herd goat and sheep and are a subset of the buffalo-herding Gujjars of the State. They migrate and return annually from the hills of the Jammu-Poonch region through the insurgency-riddled Pir Panjal into the Valley, to beyond the tree line atop the highland pastures of the Greater Himalayas. The Bakkarwals of Jammu and Kashmir: Navigating through Nomadism presents this almost entirely nomadic community, through an ethnography of their social association, religion, language, folklore and material culture, normative beliefs and indigenous knowledge, the contexts for development, gender relations, the nature of power and reciprocity, as well as the indices of change, with the aim to sensitize the reader to the precariousness of their lives, as also to their remarkable vitality and grace. Gender, Space and Resistance: Women and Theatre in India
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606927; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book explores the presence and contribution of women to the recorded history of Indian theatre. It provides a platform to raise, discuss and debate issues, aesthetics and techniques connected with the Indian theatre in the backdrop of political, social and moral values of women in theatre. An attempt to fill up the vacuum of scholarly literature on the role of women in theatre, this book expects to create enough academic value and interest. Its content unearths the dynamics of gender in the history of theatre. It extensively deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of women's theatre. This anthology also addresses the various social issues associated with gender inequality through essays, play-texts and interviews. In a similar vein, it delves deep into the relationship among theatre, public/private sphere and gender. This work purports to address a variety of needs of feminist researchers and laymen who are not conversant with the contribution of women to theatre and its obvious political and transformative intent. This collection also intends to see how the theatrical space could unsettle the gendered binaries regulating women's presence in public space, and proposes to see why and how relevant feminist politics is in re-imagining a vibrant and inclusive concept of gender fairness and justice in contemporary India. It extends high referral value for researchers, students and even laymen with interest in the role of women in theatre.Printed Pages: 673. 100495

For the Record: On Sexuality and the Colonial Archive in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125040250; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
For the Record considers the relationship between sexuality and the colonial archive by posing the following questions: Why does sexuality (still) seek its truth in the historical archive? What are the spatial and temporal logics that compel such a return? And conversely, what kind of “archive” does such a recuperative hermeneutics produce? Rather than render sexuality’s relationship to the colonial archive through the preferred lens of historical invisibility (which would presume that there is something about sexuality that is lost or silent and needs to “come out”), Arondekar engages sexuality’s recursive traces within the colonial archive against and through our very desire for access. The logic and the interpretive resources of this book arise out of two entangled and minoritized historiographies: one in South Asian studies and the other in queer/sexuality studies. Focusing on late colonial India, Arondekar examines the spectacularization of sexuality in anthropology, law, literature, and pornography from 1843–1920. By turning to materials and/or locations that are familiar to most scholars of queer and subaltern studies, Arondekar considers sexuality at the centre of the colonial archive, rather than at its margins. Women Survivors of Violence: Genesis and Growth of a State Support System
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8125059156; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In the 1980s, a field action project, which later developed into a socio-legal service to address Violence against Women (VAW), was initiated and developed by an academic institute of social work in strategic partnership with the police in Mumbai and Maharashtra. This service, termed the ‘Special Cells’, worked in tandem with the police force, and in the past three decades, has been replicated in eight states across India. Women Survivors of Violence is a first-person account of the evolution of the Special Cells. In the mid-1980s, the author was the first social worker of the TISS-initiated ‘field action project’—working on the issue of violence against women from within the police system. The result was the introduction of Special Cells in the police system. This narrative traces the 29-year-old journey of this institution, and provides a deeply personal account of the effectiveness of a multi-agency coordinated response to VAW, in the form of a partnership between an academic institute, the police system, and the violated woman. This books adds to the limited literature available in India on the processes and lessons learnt from developing and implementing an intervention on VAW. It details the processes of understanding the violated woman and the police; setting up of systems to work with women from within the police system; and engaging with the state as the instrument that can secure the right of women to a safe and secure life. It critically reflects on the learnings of the Special Cells from the women, police, the state, law, and social work practices, in the context of the ongoing struggles to respond to violence against women. An informative and deeply important account, this book will be of interest to students and educators in departments of Social Work and Women’s Studies, government personnel, trainers in police academies, and administrators. Those interested in women’s issues will also find it fascinating.Printed Pages: 219 with b/w illustrations. 102271

Cinema of Enchantment: Perso-Arabic Genealogies of the Hindi Masala Film
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2015; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
A fascinating account of the theatrical beginnings of Bollywood and the Indo-Islamic storytelling traditions of the subcontinent, the volume looks at how Islamicate cultures have richly informed and structured mainstream Hindi cinema. It tells us how it was Urdu which provided the language of quintessential romance, passion and poetry for it. Acknowledging the central contribution of Hindu mythology, narrative visual arts and epics on storytelling in film, the volume isolates Bollywood’s generic debt to the Perso-Arabic legacies of tilism or enchantment, qissa and dastan, which have been marginalised in the construction of popular Hindi cinema as national cinema. It looks at the structure and narrative form of Orientalist genres of the Silent period, stunt films, costume dramas, and their continuity in the ‘masala’ film of the 1960s and 1970s. As opposed to the lens of fantasy through which the dream-world of Hindi cinema has been traditionally perceived, it suggests that tilism may provide a framework for examining its magical and enchanting universe. The influence of Urdu writers, pre- and post Partition, Urdu poetry and Sufism on film scripts, dialogue and music ensured that the language of Firdausi, Ghalib and Zafar lived on in popular imagination. Bollywood, thus, provided one of the last havens for preserving and performing India’s famed syncretic ‘Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb’ wherein Hindi and Urdu are not two but are deeply implicated in one another-even as it disappeared from other public spaces.Printed Pages: 260. 102273

Indian Diaspora in the United States: Brain Drain or Gain?
Orient BlackSwan; Hyderabad, India; 2011; 8125042660; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Indian Diaspora in the United States looks at the topic of brain drain from a new lens. It uses Indian migration to the United States as a case study. Its approach is different from the conventional way of looking at international migration from India. The book includes discussions on “brain gain” and “brain circulation” for source countries. Recipient-countries not only benefit in the form of remittances, investments and savings but also by networking and bringing ideas and technology into India. By achieving success in and visibility in host countries, the diaspora community further influences economic and political benefits for their home countries. This groundbreaking work brings economic and political issues to the dimension of migration and concerns over brain drain. With its rigorous, network approach, this book is a valuable contribution to the studies of Indian diaspora, labour, and globalization. Printed Pages: 264. 036605

God in Politics
Global Vision Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2007; 818220206X; Hardcover; New; New;
In this book, author have consistently discussed and explained the influence of religion in political development from divine power to public power. It is no doubt that religion has given our society much of its character and coherence, permeating human behaviour in various ways either directly or indirectly. It is undeviable that the rise of modern political system was strongly influenced by the Jewish Christian religious heritage. Despite the great secularising process that has taken place during the last four centuries, belief in God has continued to play a relevant role in political ideas. Printed Pages: 176. 110059
