Saptasatisarasarvasvam
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8183151108; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Saptasatisasarvasva (Quintessence of Saptasati) is the collection of two compositions viz. Devikr-patusaragiri and Sudhakallolini. Sudhakallolini is a beautiful poetic condensation of the Saptasati, a stotraratna/mahamantra. It is composed by Dr. K. Vishnu Namputiri, a scholar of Sanskrit grammar and a graceful poet. In 108 Sanskrit verses couched in upajati metre, he has reproduced the whole story of Devimahatmya. Devotees who do not get time to perform the Parayana of Saptasati in its original form, may well resort to Dr. Namputiri's Sudhakallolini. Moreover, Sudhakallolini is a beautiful literary piece abounding in poetic excellence.Printed Pages: 63. 104086

Communal Riots
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121206448; Hardcover; New; New;
This work is based on the studies of dedicated scholars on the problem of communal riots in India after independence. The contributions and field reports offer narratives of eyewitness accounts and analyses of incidents involving communal activities. The Study assumes that communalism is a threat to our national Values and the basic concept of the constitution of India and that these values cannot be termed as out of date. The authors do not accept the view, of current commentators that the values of Secularism are obsolete or that a new Cultural definition of secularism to incorporate Hindutva are at all needed. The book offers minute details of incidents, related to persons, Politics and also the Events that queered the pitch of nationhood on communal lines. Based on Original sources and commission reports this work on communal politics lays bare the dynamics of the communal conflagration that led to human carnages and posed a challenge to the Democratic setup in the Country for some time.Printed Pages: 328. 105932

Scientific Explorations of Jain Doctrines (in 2 Parts), (Lala S.L. Jain Research Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120838122; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book shows that it can be very fruitful for science to study other thought-systems than those in which we were born and raised. In our days we can make use of the entire heritage of the mind-created global mosaic of cultures. Much more of such type of research should be done by able philosophers and scientists. Ancient thinkers have come up with insights that lack us today - causing unnecessary ignorance and suffering. Probably no philosopher in the world would disagree with the statement that there is no knowledge higher than Truth-but that there are many ways for the mind to approach her. Jainism is definitely more spiritual in its understanding than Western science and philosophy. It also covers subtle aspects of nature as yet unknown to or ill-understood by mainstream science. The book contains so much information on the modern science, including, for example, the latest theories and speculations of physics, chemistry, cosmology and genetics, and other disciplines, that for this reason alone it could be used as a general textbook for science students. But the great extra value of it is the extensive exposure of Jain ideas laid down in scriptures throughout the last two millennia by scholars and Jain acharyas (ascetics, monks). Then both traditions-modern science and Jain science-are thoroughly compared.Printed Pages: 820. 102037

The present volume, issued on the occasion of the Quincentenary of Mahaprabhu Sri Caitanya, is an attempt to understand a little more of the medieval bhakti movements of India. The contributors to the volume who have enthusiastically agreed to participate in this project are all specialists in their own fields and their valuable papers are expected to throw new light on many hitherto unknown or known features of the great historical movement, the far-reaching consequences of which are very much lively in the heart of the Indian masses even today. Jain Philosophy: Historical Outline
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121508878; Second Revised Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Jain Philosophy: Historical Outline interprets fundamentals of Jain philosophy from the viewpoint of their historical genesis and development and shows that the incipient stage of the Jain thought-complex agreed totally with the Pythagorean approach to philosophy which was based on observed realities and was quite in harmony with the existing socio-political conditions of the time of Lord Mahavira while the sophisticated stage marked by the A PRIORI doctrines and dogmas it had generated in course of its development and by the traditionally floating ideas in regard to the belief in a eternal moral order in the universe, the law of karma, ignorance as the cause of bondage and knowledge as that of liberation, the efficacy of meditation, and so forth, was a persistent juxtaposition in the evolutionary stages of the former. Since no system of Indian philosophy allows a purely isolated treatment, a comparative study of all the philosophical systems has been made here to determine the real nature of the Jain standpoint with more emphasis on the original dynamism of Jainism which had contributed to the growth of various natural sciences, including those of biology and astronomy, on the total rejection of the concept of a supernatural agent in the form of God, on the theories of valid knowledge and on the unique logical system based on the principles of relativity. Safeguarding India: Essays on Governance and Security
Harpercollins India Publishers Ltd./Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 9789351775423; Hardcover; New; New;
There is a crucial link between national governance and internal security. The effective maintenance of security calls for efficient and honest governance. And good governance is inconceivable if there is any compromise whatsoever in the enforcement of the rule of law. Continuing maladministration and corruption have created the impression that our polity, bureaucracy and the rich and influential elements are beyond the pale of law. National security can no longer be safeguarded by seeking refuge in the existing constitutional arrangements and division of responsibilities between the centre and the states. Nor can these grave and complex problems be tackled by the home ministry alone whose capability and resourcefulness has been progressively diluted over the years. Printed Pages: 208. 107603

Arthashastra of Kautilya (Second Edition), 3 Vols
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 8183150349; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
Kautilya's Arthasastra, the ancient Indian classic of governance, has been gaining increasing attention of Indologists all over the world, in recent years. It gives a mine of information regarding the actual practice of governance and outlines a picture of an ideal system of efficient administration. In the first chapter, Mr. Mannadiar introduces the treatise, indicates the themes of its fifteen adhikaranas and gives a profile of Kautilya about whom we have only scanty reliable information. He follows it up with a brief description of the society in which Kautilya lived. The rich material of the Book has been judiciously reorganised to present various topics in a compact form. The topics dealt with include the administrative hierarchy, conditions of service, penal practices, welfare measures and foreign policy. Kautilya gives detailed instructions regarding the organisation of an efficient network of spies. Even the most infamous Intelligence Agencies of the present world may find some useful hints to strengthen their department of dirty tricks. "Trust none" should be the motto of the ruler. Modern Management gurus find in Arthasastra many ideas which could be implemented in their organisations. Mr. Mannadiar devotes one full chapter to the theme. He has not failed to note the absence of concern with general education and public health. Kautilya's interest in environmentalism and social forestry should be an eye-opener to many contemporary ecologists. Mannadiar's occasional asides and comments connect the wily Brahmin's Insight to the present practice of public administration. 101251

Kautilya Arthashastra: A Study
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2013; Hardcover; New; New;
Sharma Shastri discovered for the first time the most important political treatise of Kautalya called the Arthashastra and published it from Mysore in 1909 and later an English translation in 1915. Later R. P. Kangle brought out a fairly accurate translation based on fresh materials. T. Ganapati Sastri edited the text in the Trivandrum Sanskrit Series, between 1924-25 with his own complete Sanskrit Commentary styled 'Srimulam' (in three volumes) using all the fragments of ancient Sanskrit commentaries as well as an old Malayalam commentary (though incomplete) of the 12th centurt A.D. F. Edgerton pronounced that "Ganapati Sastri's edition with his own commentary is decideedly the best edition of that all important work". M. Wnternitz observed that Ganapati sastri's :Sreemulam is an indispensable help for every student of Arthashastra". Dr. N. P. Unni who brought out a reprint with an elaborate introduction (in three volumes) in 1984 has now prepared this authentic English translation of the text. 103732

Mattavilasa Prahasana (Text, English Translation With Introduction)
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 1998; 8170814014; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The earliest farcical sketch in one Act, the Mattavilasa or 'Diversion of the Drunk' of King Mahendrvikramavarman of Kanchi, depicts the drunken revelry of a Saiva mendicant bearing A Human skull in lieu of an alms-bowl and accordingly calling himself a Kapalin; his wanderings with his wench through the purlieus of Kanchi on his way to a tavern; his scuffle with a hypocritical Buddhist monk whom he accuses of the theft of the precious bowl; his appeal to degenerate Pasupata to settle the dispute and the final recovery of the bowl from a lunatic who has retrieved it from a stray dog. The Prahasana is a remarkably smart production of the genre, replete with mirth and satire and the characters are vigorously drawn throwing a flood of light on the life of the time. The royal author who calls himself 'Vicitracitta' holds to ridicule the sham priests and mendicants of various religious sects. The work is here critically edited with an English translation and detailed introduction giving an account how the farce is staged in the reformed temple theatres of Kerala by Cakyars" during the last several centuries. A rare and hitherto unknown metrical commentary is also appended to the edition.Printed Pages: 120. 103907

A Better India, A Better World
Allen Lane; New Delhi, India; 2009; 067008283X; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
With one of the highest GDP growth rates in the world and an array of recent achievements in technology, industry and entrepreneurship, India strides confidently towards the future. But, in the world’s largest democracy, not everyone is equally fortunate. More than 300 million Indians are still prey to hunger, illiteracy and disease, and 51 per cent of India’s children are still undernourished. What will it take for India to bridge this great divide? When will the fruits of development reach the poorest of the poor, and wipe the tears from the eyes of every man, woman and child, as Mahatma Gandhi had dreamt? And how should this, our greatest challenge ever, be negotiated? In this extraordinarily inspiring and visionary book, N.R. Narayana Murthy, who pioneered, designed and executed the Global Delivery Model that has become the cornerstone of India’s success in information technology services outsourcing, shows us that a society working for the greatest welfare of the greatest number—samasta jananam sukhino bhavantu—must focus on two simple things: values and good leadership. Drawing on the remarkable Infosys story and the lessons learnt from the two decades of post-reform India, Narayana Murthy lays down the ground rules that must be followed if future generations are to inherit a truly progressive nation. Built on Narayana Murthy’s lectures delivered around the world, A Better India: A Better World is a manifesto for the youth, the architects of the future, and a compelling argument for why a better India holds the key to a better world. Kamba Ramayana
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2002; 0143028154; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
The epic story of Rama, which is part of the Indian collective consciousness, has been retold in many regional languages. Pre-eminent among the many vernacular retellings of the Ramayana is the twelfth-century Tamil version by Kamban. The son of a temple drummer, Kamban is reputed to have had an impressive mastery of Tamil and Sanskrit classics. Fascinated by the lore of Ramayana, he immersed himself totally in it. Though Kamban acknowledges his indebtedness to the Sanskrit version of the Ramayana by Valmiki, his is an independent work, enriched by various religious, philosophical and literary influences. The Kamba Ramayana differs from Valmiki’s in significant ways. Though cast in the heroic mould of a Purushotama or ‘the best among men’, Valmiki’s Rama is still a man. Kamban, on the other hand, never allows the reader to forget the godhood of Rama. His Ravana too, though flawed, is a heroic figure. While Valmiki’s diction is sparse and direct, Kamban’s exuberant prose sparkles with wit and inventiveness. Translated into English by the late P.S. Sundaram, this edition has been abridged and edited by his long-time friend N.S. Jagannathan. Though pared down from the original six volumes to a single one, this translation retains the magic and poetry of the original. Printed Pages: 464. 017039

India Towards Anarchy (1967-1992)
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170172969; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In the Preface to his book on Terrorism (1985), the author says: “There is every likelihood of terrorism, violence and chaos growing in volume.” Two years later, in 1987, in the Preface to his next book, Law and Order in India, he made another pertinent observation: “The public has got so much accustomed to lawlessness that it believes that India can never again become a healthy and law-abiding society. Fortunately for the country this is not a fact.” In the present volume, he discusses a wide range of subjects, including criminalisation of politics, corruption in the judicial system, failure of the bureaucracy, and the weakening of the police machinery, to highlight the fact that narrow political considerations of all political parties are leading the country to anarchy and chaos. Though the situation is pretty bad, he is hopeful that the electorate will teach a lesson to the present leaders as it did to their predecessors. Saksena’s 40 years field experience, combined with study and research, has gone into the book’s making. Printed Pages: 201. 107972

Terrorism History and Facets in the world and in India
Abhinav Publications/Kaveri Books; New Delhi, India; 8170172012; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
" The book, a meticulously researched account of select examples from the rare, varied and astounding terracotta collection of the Allahabad Museum, makes a major breakthrough in the study of technique and interpretation of subjects related to terracotta art. An excellent classification based on typology and provenance has been worked out which should serve as a very useful tool for the future study and analysis of the material. The history of terracotta sculptures both as an art form expressing itself at various levels and as an invaluable source for cultural and social evidence not otherwise available has been taken into consideration and in this regard several connections with West Asia and old Europe have been noted tending to confirm the common cultural heritage shared by these regions. 108027

The Political Economy of Trade, Finance, and Development: Selected Essays of T.N. Srinivasan
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0195690753; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Globalization has several dimensions spanning the political, economic, social, and cultural. This multidimensionality has remained unarticulated in our understanding of globalization. What does globalization really mean? Is globalization necessary? How do we globalize? What are the costs and benefits involved? These complications in international political economy are the central issues of T.N. Srinivasan’s essays in this collection. Among the few intellectuals with a clear vision on the subject, Srinivasan’s essays cover economic growth, development, international trade, poverty eradication, international financial architecture, and various aspects of India’s economic reforms, including the comparitive reform experiences of India, China, and Pakistan. The essays provide a comprehensive view of efforts required by the developing economies towards globalization. They also highlight the distortions that come in the way of integrating domestic markets with the world economy. 018140

In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. Inspite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. As is well-known, Hinduism is one of the oldest religions of the world with approximately one billion followers and about 85% of them in its homeland, India. The word 'Hinduism' is perhaps a misnomer for what appears like a 'religion', but as has been described by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, is more of 'a culture than a creed'. As pointed out in this volume, the word 'Hindu' is derived from 'Sindhu', the Sanskrit name for the river Indus, and the original inhabitants of the Indus Valley and beyond were so called by foreigners, especially by the Islamic invaders. Because of the lack of any fixed dogma or doctrine, the absence of any one holy book propounding any fixed doctrine and the absence of any organized church or institution that can bring its followers together, Hinduism has emerged as a complex religion based as it is, like the ancient Greek religion, on freedom of thought, belief and expression and also on tolerance and non-violence. At the same time Hinduism presents the students of world religions with a serious difficulty of bringing together the various beliefs, doctrines, customs and institutions under the same roof called Hinduism. Various accounts of Hinduism published so far therefore, give us only partial pictures of this unique faith. In this Volume 45 scholars representing various disciplines and in different professions, have come together to contribute 63 chapters on various colourful aspects of Hinduism covering historically a very wide area, from vedic religion to modern Hinduism. Topically they cover various basic concepts, textual studies, customs, rituals and legal institutions, studies of Hindu social organizations, various movements and cults, like Saivism, Vaisnavism etc., Hindu art aesthetics and architecture, response to and relation with other Indian religions, and modern Hinduism represented by great reformists like Raja Rammohun Roy, Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore etc, and finally the volume concludes with a chapter on the reaction of Hinduism to science and technology. The methodology of study as a whole is objective, balanced and unbiased, neither partisan nor unfairly critical, and no attempt has been made to defend any of the shortcomings of Hinduism or to glorify any of its merits. The Twitter Machine: Reflections on Language
Basil Blackwell; Oxford, UK; 1989; 0631169253; First Edition; Hard Cover; As New; As New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This unique book provides an introductory overview of modern theoretical linguistics which manages to be both accessible and humorous without sacrificing either scholarship of insight. In a series of magisterial vignettes Smith emphasizes the perennial necessity of appealing to linguistic theory if we are to gain any real understanding of the phenomena of language. However profound or however trivial the questions we raise and try answer - What exactly does one have to know to count as a speaker of a language? What would it mean for a language to have no vowels? Why do little children call lorries 'lollies'? Precisely what with this sentence is wrong? - we need to recourse to a theory even to make them coherent. In particular, the author argues that we can find solutions to our puzzles, and explanations for these phenomena, if we exploit on the one hand Chomsky's theory of Generative Grammar, and on the other Sperber and Wilson's theory of Relevance. The Mystery of the Mahabharata, 5 Vols
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2007; 8180901319; Hardcover; New; New;
The idea of the Mahabharata as a great picture of a great Philosophy of Life, occurred to me almost like a dream. I have pursued it for nearly eight years; and the result of my study, relating to the Vedas, is contained in this volume; and that, relating to the Mahabharata, will follow in the next. My study of the Mahabharata led me to the Vedas, Upanisads, Satapatha Brahmana and the Systems of Hindu Philosophy; for the "story" is, even as it claims to be, a picture of all sacred philosophy and literature; and it is in this light that I have explained and interpreted it. The First Volume ends with the Gods of the Vedas, and the Second starts with an examination of the Story of the Mahabharata. But, in order to give an idea of the whole, I have added a brief explanation of the main incidents of the Story in the Introduction, as it might be helpful in fixing its true scope and character. While examining words and names in accordance with the method of letter-analysis, I have, in a number of cases, omitted to give a full explanation of letters in the Introduction, as I did not wish to burden it with too many details. The reader can easily get all the meanings by reference to Chapters VI and VII, dealing with the Sanskrit language and the method of interpretation. The main idea of the present work is that the sacred books of the Hindus, from the Vedas to the Mahabharata, described as the fifth and the last Veda, deal with the one problem of all problems-the Truth of life conceived in various ways. The Vedas examine the different theories of life,-its origin, manifestation, and end-in the form of Hymns; the Brahmanas represent the Supreme creative energy conceived as Action in Sacrifice; the Upanisads and the Systems of Hindu Philosophy deal with the same subject with less symbolism and more directly; while the Puranas and the great Epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata describe it in Story-form. In the present work, I have as far as possible, referred to the original Sanskrit texts, and thought it desirable to give ample references. But, for obvious reasons, I have limited myself to the Rg-Veda, the most ancient as well as the most sacred, where other Vedas only repeat the same hymn or the same idea. Nor have I given many references, though easily available, where one has sufficed. The sacred works of the Hindus are the legacy of India-and the heritage of the world. 110713
