Imperial Delhi: The British Capital of the Indian Empire
Prestel; Germany; 2002; 3791327887; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 24 Cms x 30 Cms
Designated by King George V to replace Calcutta as capital of British India, New Delhi was constructed between 1912 and 1929 under the steady eye of architect Sir Edward Lutyens who sought to bring to this British Colony a sense of classicism, order, and institutional beauty. Brimming with more than 300 color and black and white illustrations, plans and photographs, this book presents the most comprehensive examination to date of how this city was envisioned, planned and constructed. From the massive war memorial arch to the spacious gardens and the gloriously imposing Viceroy's House, the evidence of Lutyens' architectural genius is everywhere throughout New Delhi. Architectural historian Andreas Volwahsen discusses the importance of Lutyens' work and provides a fascinating account of the making of a city: the contentious debates and cultural considerations, the inspiration and the painstaking construction, and finally the ways in which New Delhi has evolved into a modern city. With the growing interest in the preservation of historic sites worldwide, this magnificently detailed yet highly accessible history is certain to become a classic in the fields of architecture and urban design. Splendours of Imperial India: British Architecture in the 18th and 19th Centuries
Prestel; Germany; 2004; 3791330454; First Edition; Hard Cover with a Slipcase; New; New; 25 Cms x 31 Cms
An illustrated survey of British colonial architecture that once dominated the landscape of the Indian subcontinent, this book tells a rich and complicated history of imperialism. One of the most revealing legacies of Britain's long history in India is the colonial architecture from the two centuries preceding the struggle for independence. Built to house both occupiers and occupied alike, these imposing buildings, including palaces, mansions, clubhouses, and government offices, represented a hybrid of Western and Eastern sensibilities as their architects sought to plant the flag of British dominance in a foreign culture. Splendours of Imperial India focuses on India's towns and cities, particularly Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, providing countless illustrations, sketches, and photographs of the many impressive buildings and ruins that dot India's coastlines, hillsides, and valleys. Andreas Volwahsen's informative commentaries highlight the considerable achievements of these magnificent structures while offering insight into the stories these buildings tell about their own and India's history. Mountainous Sound Spaces: Listening to History and Music in the Uttarakhand Himalayas
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789382993322; Hardcover; New; New;
This book provides a perspective on cultural practice in the Himalayas that engages directly with the sonic world of musical production thus emphasizing how the invisible world of sound is critical to shaping imagined histories creating mythologized heroes and amplifying the stories of mountains and people. Together Garhwal and Kumaun comprise the present-day Indian state of Uttarakhand a state with unique histories associated with Hindu mythology immigrant communities from western India Gorkha conquest British colonialism and modern-day India. The book situates the reader within the history and geography of Garhwal and provides general information on a selection of instruments and sound structures. The reader is introduced to Garhwal’s aristocratic and colonial past as well as to the region’s folklore. The music of bagpipes echoes a colonial past by blending British regimental histories with contemporary folk traditions. Drum and trumpet ensembles echo the martial traditions of Rajputs and Mughals and confirm migratory histories between the mountains and the plains. Flutes echo the supernatural world of sprites and gods and become a potent symbol of dangerous love. The book also uses a variety of theoretical models to explore the ways in which music is described and explained in academic literature and mystic traditions. The nature of sound as well as its relationship to language is re-examined in the context of the Himalayas. It provides the reader with a framework for understanding how music is created and how repertoire is organized. In addition it moves the reader between the worlds of epic performance and contemporary practice giving a sense for disparate sites of musical production and performance.Printed Pages: 198. 101490

Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8189766759; First Edition; Softcover; New;
At just twelve years of age Iqbal Masih was gunned down by an assassin. Iqbal was sold by his parents to a carpet factory owner at the age of four. It was six long years before he succeeded in escaping the clutches of his tyrannical master. A young boy alone in the world, surviving off foraged scraps, he stumbled across a Bonded Labour Liberation Front rally. The organisation took him in, and he began tirelessly working to spread the word to other enslaved children that they too could be free. Iqbal participated in raids on illegal factories and addressed international conventions. He was awarded the Reebok 'Youth in Action' award and a scholarship to study law in Boston. But before he could start to enjoy the results of his hard work, his life was cut short by a hail of bullets from the gun of an unknown sympathiser with the carpet masters. Heart Yoga: The Sacred Marriage of Yoga and Mysticism
North Atlantic Books/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2010; 1556438974; Softcover; New; 18 x 23 Cm
In Heart Yoga, renowned spiritual writer and Sacred Activist Andrew Harvey and longtime yoga teacher Karuna Erickson present a vision of hatha yoga practice that links ancient spiritual traditions to contemporary life. Including excerpts of poetic sacred writing from mystical sages through the ages, the book reminds readers that the purpose of yoga is not to improve one’s physical health or even to achieve peace of mind (although these results may be achieved along the way), but to reach a state of unity with the divine, the goal of mystics from all traditions. With detailed descriptions and photographs of fifty yoga poses and their alchemical effects on the body and consciousness, Heart Yoga presents yoga as a simple meditative practice that enables the practitioner to dwell in the heart and experience the bliss of union with the sacred power underlying all of life. The book explains how to prepare for Heart Yoga and describes the “Five Great Joys” that are part of the path. Included are the authors’ own compelling stories of their individual journeys along the path of yoga: stories of suffering, transcendence, and joy that both inspire and enlighten. Preparing to Die: Practical Advice and Spiritual Wisdom from the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition
Snow Lion Publications; Ithaca, New York, USA; 2013; 1559394080; First Edition; Paperback; New; 16 x 24 Cm
We all face death, but how many of us are actually ready for it? Whether our own death or that of a loved one comes first, how prepared are we, spiritually or practically? In Preparing to Die, Andrew Holecek presents a wide array of resources to help the reader address this unfinished business. Part One shows how to prepare one's mind and how to help others, before, during, and after death. The author explains how spiritual preparation for death can completely transform our relationship to the end of life, dissolving our fear and helping us to feel open and receptive to letting go in the dying process. Daily meditation practices, the stages of dying and how to work with them, and after-death experiences are all detailed in ways that will be particularly helpful for those with an interest in Tibetan Buddhism and in Tibetan approaches to conscious dying. Part Two addresses the practical issues that surround death. Experts in grief, hospice, the funeral business, and the medical and legal issues of death contribute chapters to prepare the reader for every practical concern, including advance directives, green funerals, the signs of death, warnings about the funeral industry, the stages of grief, and practical care for the dying. Part Three contains heart-advice from twenty of the best-known Tibetan Buddhist masters now teaching in the West. These brief interviews provide words of solace and wisdom to guide the dying and their caregivers during this challenging time. Preparing to Die is for anyone interested in learning how to prepare for death from a Buddhist perspective, both spiritually and practically. It is also for those who want to learn how to help someone else who is dying, both during the time of illness and death as well as after death. Printed Pages: 416. 037796

Lord Siva’s Song: The Isvara Gita
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121513030; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
While the Bhagavad Gita is an acknowledged treasure of world spiritual literature, few people know a parallel text, the Isvara Gita. This lesser-known work is also dedicated to a god, but in this case it is Siva, rather than Krsna, who is depicted as the omniscient creator of the world. Andrew J. Nicholson’s Lord Siva’s Song makes this text available in English in an accessible new translation. A work of poetry and philosophy, the Isvara Gita builds on the insights of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and foreshadows later developments in tantric yoga. It deals with the pluralistic religious environment of early medieval India through an exploration of the relationship between the gods Siva and Visnu. The work condemns sectarianism and violence, and provides a strategy for accommodating conflicting religious claims in its own day and in our own. Printed Pages: 244. 039738

Archaeological Theory and Scientific Practice: Topics in Contemporary Archaeology
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2001; 0521790603; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
Is archaeology an art or a science? This question has been hotly debated over the last few decades with the rise of archaeological science. At the same time, archaeologists have seen a change in the intellectual character of their discipline, as many writers have adopted approaches influenced by social theory. The discipline now encompasses both archaeological scientists and archaeological theorists, and discussion regarding the status of archaeology remains polarised. Andrew Jones argues that we need to analyse the practice of archaeology. Through an analysis of archaeological practice, influenced by recent developments in the field of science studies, and with the aid of extensive case studies, he develops a new framework which allows the interpretative and methodological components of the discipline to work in tandem. His reassessment of the status and character of archaeology will be of interest to students, scholars and professionals. Contents 1. The archaeology of ‘two cultures’; 2. Science as culture: creating interpretative networks; 3. Archaeology observed; 4. Materials, science and material culture: practice and narrative; 5. Material culture and materials science: a biography of things; 6. A biography of ceramics in Neolithic Orkney; 7. Making people and things in the Neolithic: pots, food and history; 8. Before and after science. Printed Pages: 222. 009442

Miller's Church History: From First to Twentieth Century (Short Papers on Church History), (in Three Volumes)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480723; Hardcover; New; New;
This 3-vol. work begins with the history at the time of Christ and St. Paul, moves through centuries till the end of twentieth century. The prime focus of this presentation is to outshine the importance of evangelism and religious education rather than providing mere history. In fact, the author wrote these short papers on Church history at different points, compiled them, and hence, these volumes.The work is unparalleled as it comprehensively covers biblically solid review of the Church history and not just history of the Christian religion from a Roman Catholic perspective. It interweaves history right from the first planting of the Church, thereby, depicting condition of seven general eras of Church History from the time of Apostles. Inter-alia, Vol. 1 starts its voyage with the Rock Foundation till the Pontificate of Gregory VII; Vol. 2 begins with the Crusades and ends with detailing the scenario of the Council at Bologna; Vol. 3 outsets the Popish Refutation at first instance, then moves ahead to describe the state of affairs in ending years of the twentieth century with its last chapter titled `The Last Fifty Years', which mainly found removed from many printings of this elegant work.This ecclesiastical history equipped with Appendices and Indexes, aims to connect Christ and His word, so that the readers may receive the truth, blessing and grace, to their respective souls. This all time classic is a must buy for Historians, Christian Religious Scholars, Educationalists, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Researchers and Students, alike. 106395

Transformational Grammar: A First Course (Cambridge Textbooks in Linguistics)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521347505; Reprint; Paperback; New; 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
Andrew Radford’s new textbook is principally for students with little or no background in syntax who need a lively and up-to-date introduction to contemporary work on transformational grammar. It covers four main topics - the goals of linguistic theory, syntactic structure, the nature and role of the lexicon, and the function of transformations and the principles governing their application. The framework takes into account the major works such as Chomsky’s Knowledge of Language and Barriers written since the publication of Radford’s widely acclaimed Transformational Syntax in 1981. Not only does the present book use a more recent theoretical framework, but at the descriptive level it covers a wider range of constructions and rules than its predecessor. Andrew Radford is well known for his effective pedagogical approach, and in this book even more care has been devoted to providing a sympathetic and non-technical introduction to the field. At the end of each chapter are exercises which reinforce the text, enable students to apply the various concepts, etc. discussed, or encourage them to look more critically at some of the assumptions and analyses presented. The book also has a detailed bibliographical background section and an extensive bibliography which will be a useful source of reference to the primary literature. Although intended principally as a coursebook for students of syntax or English grammar, Transformational Grammar will be invaluable to any reader who needs a straightforward and comprehensive introduction to the latest developments in this field. Contents Prologue; Acknowledgments; 1. Goals; 2. Structure; 3. Phrase-markers; 4. Noun phrases; 5. Other phrases; 6. Clauses; 7. The lexicon; 8. Transformations; 9. WH movement; 10. Alpha movement; Bibliographical background; Bibliography; Index. Printed Pages: 640. 003112

Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0521731917; First Edition; Paperback; New; 175 x 245 Mm
Analysing English Sentences provides a concise and clear introduction to current work in syntactic theory, drawing on the key concepts of Chomsky’s Minimalist Program. Assuming little or no prior knowledge of syntax or minimalism, Radford outlines the core concepts and leading ideas and how they can be used to describe various aspects of the syntax of English. A diverse range of topics is covered, including syntactic structure, null constituents, head movement, case and agreement and split projections. Using Radford's trademark approach and writing style, the book is intensive and progressive in nature, introducing grammatical concepts and working in stages towards more complex phenomena. Contents 1. Grammar 2. Structure 3. Null constituents 4. Head movement 5. Wh-movement 6. A-movement 7. Agreement, case and movement 8. Split projections 9. Phases. Printed Pages: 540. 026202

The Riddle: Where Ideas Come from and How to Have Better Ones
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8126520485; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Innovators are much admired but little understood in the business world. More and more, as information becomes readily available to everyone around the world through technology, it's what you do with that information that will set you apart. The question is, "How do you turn that information into innovative ideas?" Science has shown that it's possible to create conditions under which the mind is more prepared to have insights, or "Aha! moments." Andrew Razeghi explores this concept and shows how leaders and managers can foster creativity and make "Aha! moments" routine practice among their teams. Combining the latest scientific research, interviews with current innovators, and studies of history's most famously creative minds, he dissects the process of innovation and presents a practical approach which can help any individual or organization get ahead of the competition.Printed Pages: 256. 104896

From Asian to Global Financial Crisis: An Asian Regulator's View of Unfettered Finance in the 1900s and 2000s
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2010; 052116821X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 230 Mm
This is a unique insider account of the new world of unfettered finance. The author, an Asian regulator, examines how old mindsets, market fundamentalism, loose monetary policy, carry trade, lax supervision, greed, cronyism, and financial engineering caused both the Asian crisis of the late 1990s and the global crisis of 2008–2009. This book shows how the Japanese zero interest rate policy to fight deflation helped create the carry trade that generated bubbles in Asia whose effects brought Asian economies down. The study’s main purpose is to demonstrate that global finance is so interlinked and interactive that our current tools and institutional structure to deal with critical episodes are completely outdated. The book explains how current financial policies and regulation failed to deal with a global bubble and makes recommendations on what must change. Contents Introduction 1. Things fall apart 2. Divine Stories: Divyavadana Part 1
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2009; 0861712951; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The Divyavadana is an enormous compendium of Indian Buddhist narratives written in Sanskrit from the early centuries of the Common Era, whose stories have since spread throughout Asia, as both narrative and narrative art, leaving an indelible mark on Buddhist thought and practice. The stories in the collection were frequently used in the education of both monastics and laity in premodern Asia, exerting a powerful influence as moral exempla and legal precedent, and they were considered by many to be the word of the Buddha himself. These stories were likewise canonical in their influence on Buddhist art. Representations of these stories can be found across Asia, from Kizil in China to Sanchi in India to Borobudur in Indonesia. It is not hyperbole to say that these are some of the most influential stories in the history of Buddhism. The stories presented here, among the first texts to be inscribed by Buddhists, highlight the moral economy of karma, illustrating how gestures of faith, especially offerings, can bring the reward of future happiness and ultimately liberation. Unveiling India: A Woman's Journey
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 0140103449; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
The women in this book are not extraordinary or famous, and yet their stories and testimonies, narrated here by one of India’s best-known women journalists, provide a passionate, often deeply touching, revelation of what it means to be a woman in India today. The women tell of marriage and widowhood, unfair work practices, sexual servitude, the problems of bearing and rearing children in poverty, religion, discrimination, other forms of exploitation. Yet they also talk of fulfilling relationships, the joys of marriage and children, the exhilaration of breaking free from the bonds of tradition, ritual, caste, religion... Interwoven with all this is the story of one woman’s journey—of how Anees Jung, the author, brought up in purdah, succeeded in shaking off the restricting influences of her traditional upbringing to become a highly successful, independent career woman, still a comparatively rare phenomenon in India. As such, the book is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the women of India—the silent majority that is now beginning to make itself heard. Printed Pages: 127. 002444

Perspectives on the Origin of Indian Civilization
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606404; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The earliest Indian inscriptions date from the third century before Christ. Arch-aeological and palaeo-anthropological evidence, as well as the Indian oral tradition, consistently point to the ‘continuity’ of the Indian Civilization back to a much earlier date. However, the question of the origin of Indian Civilization prior to that period remains open. There are three main schools of thought in this regard. Proponents of the Indo-European theory suggest that the Sanskrit language and civilization were an intrusion into India from the West. Proponents of the continuity theory, on the contrary, believe that they arose locally. The third school of thought proposes that the current scholarship is insufficient to trace the Sanskrit language and civilization back to pre-historical times, and that further research is required to develop a fair comparison between the European languages and the Indian languages. Published literature in the field often reflects one or the other of these perspectives, rather than offering an integrated view. This volume seeks to address this gap, by proposing a possible resolution to this seemingly intractable issue. It results from a symposium held at the University of Massachusetts–Dartmouth in July 2011, with invited scholars representing each of the various camps. During the seminar it became apparent that these different traditions are actually much closer to one another than what is usually believed. Accordingly, this is an essential volume for scholars seeking a balanced view on the quest for the origin of the Indian languages and civilization.Printed Pages: 342 with 8 color plates. 100367

The Greek Folk Costume
Melissa Publishing House; Greece; Hardcover; Fine; Fine; 25 x 31 Cm
The masterpieces of folk handicrafts, which through the aspiration of the simple artisan reach the heights of true artistic creation, are presented in this publication. The diversity of costumes from the various areas of Greece, the impressive decoration, the detailed embroidery and the dazzling colours represent the wealth of Greek tradition. This is an exhaustive, authoritative and comprehensive publication, lavishly illustrated with material from the unique collections of the Benaki Museum in Athens. The book also shows how costume covers the specific demands which are created by geographical position and local climatological conditions. These dictate the production and processing of material as well as the commercial relations of each community. Therefore, the costume of each locality expresses the aesthetic perceptions of each community and reflects its special characteristics of its way of life. The book covers Costumes with the Sigouni of the following areas: Atalanti, Arachova, Sarakatsani, Florina, Eleusis, Tanagra, Hassia, Attica, Corinthia, Argos, Agianna, Edipsos, Paramythia, Souli, Pogoni, Dropolis, Garitsa.
